Monaco held to 1-1 draw by PSV

25 Nov 2003

PSV's makeshift backline were able to make a better stand in their  match against Monaco, than Spanish outfit Deportivo La Coruna, who were crushed with a record breaking 8-3 scoreline by the French outfit a couple of weeks ago.
With a number of key defenders injured the Eindhovenaren conjured up a backline consisting of
19-year-old youth player Vonlanthen - and just returned from injuries , Bøgelund and Faber. However, despite a solid performance from all three players, one solitary attack in the 34th minute saw the French take a 0-1 lead when Morientes headed behind goalkeeper Waterreus.
In the second act PSV continued to dominate slightly but were dealt a blow in the 50th minute when they were reduced to 10 men after Lucius was sent for picking up a trivial second yellow card when taking a free kick to quickly. In the 82 minute of the game Monaco were also reduced to 10 men when Zikos was sent off for a deliberate handball after trying to stop play to help an injured player. Out of the resulting free kick, substitute Jan Vennegoo of Hesselink neatly nodded in from 10 meters.
With just one minute remaining, Monaco were reduced to 8 men when Giuly was sent for an early shower for retaliating against PSV Mateja Kezman, who remained goalless for the 13th consecutive Champions League match.
PSV will now have to beat Deportivo by at least 2 goals in their last Champions League match - and if the Spanish side score in Eindhoven in then PSV will have to win with by 3 or more goals.
