| Oranje
beat Germany 1-3 |

Theng 20 minutes were
tentative ones for Oranje who looked unsure of themselves and their
tasks. They hardly ventured deep into German territory, let alone
creating goal-scoring opportunities but they finally started to penetrate the
home defence and went ahead in the 22nd when an Edgar Davids freekick
disappeared past Oliver Kahn into goal and was awarded to Patrick Kluivert, though
in the playback it didn't look as if he'd actually got a touch in. It raised
the temperature, increased the tempo of the match (and its watchability)
with the result that 12 minutes
later an incredibly unmarked Bobic headed in the equalizer.
Within
3 minutes of the 2nd act kicking-off Germany broke through into the penalty
area but Zenden stopped Bobic from putting away his 2nd goal. A couple of
minutes later Van der Vaart (who'd come on for Cocu) set-up Van Nistelrooy
(replacing Kluivert) with a beauty of anng but his attempt met Oliver Kahn. The play flowed backwards and
forwards for the next 20 minutes with little to choose between the two
teams. In the 69th Van der Vaart crossed in front of goal for Hasselbaink to
cleanly fire home for the 1-2. Germany's response was to put the Dutch under
plenty of pressure for the next few minutes. In the 79th Seedorf crossed for
Van Nistelrooy to score the 3rd in a great piece of attacking football.
Oranje hung on despite increasing German pressure to take home a more than
welcome away win against their arch-rivals!
