Westerveld was in terrific form today and was named "Man of the
Match" as Liverpool won the English Charity Shield 2 - 1 in
Cardiff's Millenium Stadium. The UEFA Cup winners went ahead after less
than a minute's play when a penalty was awarded against captain Roy Keane
which veteran Gary McAllister calmly put passed Fabio Barthez. 'Mr.
Quicksilver' David Owen scored the 2nd goal in the 17th minute as
Liverpool dominated the 1st half. Manchester United fought back on all
cylinders after the break and came close to scoring several times before
Ruud van Nistelrooy finally got one passed his compatriot Westerveld.
Despite coming close with shots from Keane (who had one bounce off the
bar), Beckham and Van Nistelrooy, luck didn't smile on United here in
Cardiff whereas for Liverpool it's becoming a bit of a
home-away-from-home. |
