| PSV
lineup: Lodewijks, Bogelund, Ooijer, Hofland, Bouma,Van Bommel, Vogel,
Rommedahl, Gakhokidze and Vennegoor of Hesselink.
Leeds
United lineup: Martyn, Mills, Ferdinand, Matteo, Harte,Bowyer,
Dacourt, Bakke, Kewell, Smith and Viduka.
Leeds were able to field Bowyer,
Mills and Smith (replacing the UEFA uneligible Robbie Fowler) who are all
sitting out lengthy Premiership suspensions while PSV could once again
call on Hofland and Bouma but still missed Waterreus, Heintze and Lucius.
They looked impressive in theng 15 minutes, Danish international
Dennis Rommedahl was particularly effective for them during the 1st half,
and Leeds goalie Martyn was forced to make 2 good saves in close
succession from Van Bommel efforts. Later on it was Leeds turn and Vennegor of Hesselink
made a spectacular clearance of Kewell's attempt off the line in the 23rd
minute to keep the scoreboard empty. Bruggink was replaced in the 36th by
John de Jong after he was injured. Close to halftime PSV were unlucky not
to have been awarded a penalty when Georgi Gakhokidze (who had a good
match) saw his fine effort 'hands-balled' by Matteo. After the break
PSV were unable to string any moves together and, despite bringing on
Kezman for Vennegoor in the 60th and Nikifirov for Hofland in the 67th,
they will be disappointed with their performance which didn't live up to
expectations. Leeds were equally unable to threaten and will be resonably
content with their away point. Eric Gerets will have a hell of a job
getting his team to do better than they did tonight when they visit Elland
Road next week but Leeds have been pretty unimpressive in recent weeks
(only 2 points from the last 5 matches) so anything is
still possible.
