Ajax beat Apollon Lissamol 2 - 0

20 Sept 2001

The match began with the quietest 60 seconds of respectful silence for the victims of the American tragedy you could imagine - you could almost literally hear a pin drop! Still the stadium was more empty than full - this meeting not interesting enough for the fans?! New boy-on-the-block Zlatan pleased the ones who had bothered to turn up with an early goal in the 4th minute and headed just wide minutes later from a Mido cross. The Cypriots almost profited from a defensive error early on but the attempt went wide. As was expected Ajax dominated and most of the action took place in the Apollon half but unfortunately during the rest of the match the Amsterdammers showed their inexperience as a team again. They have all the talent you could wish for but it's still pretty raw and didn't gel tonight. The crowd grew more and more restless as the minutes went by and the rest of the expected goal spree goals didn't arrive - there was a considerable amount of whistling and calls for "football, football!" The 2nd half was no better as Ajax failed to impress and was pretty poor viewing - at least Machlas managed to find the back of the net with the  2nd goal in the 58th but that was small compensation for the disappointed few in the stands.
