Excelsior have suffered their first Ere Divisie
defeat, losing 0-2 to a rather uninspired PSV, despite playing some
attractive football. They started the match in furious style and Brian Pinas
had a 'golden' opportunity tothe score for them in theng seconds
but saw his attempt saved by an alert Ronald Waterreus. A defensive error by
Danny Buijs, misjudging a long-ball which landed at Mark van Bommel's feet,
allowed the PSV captian to slip past goalie Zbigniew Malkowski and score the
1-0 in the 3rd minute. The goal visibly disheartened the young Excelsior
side and Arnold Bruggink curled in a freekick in the 17th for the 2-0.
Dennis Rommedahl and Arjen Robben missed the next chances that PSV had while
after half an hour's play, the home team began to recover their confidence.
Their young Australian striker Brett Holman had the best chance, getting
past Waterreus but losing his balance under pressure from Kevin Hofland when
about to shoot. Seven minutes before half-time he hit the post with another
effort. Both sides failed to convert their goal-scoring chances after the
break, leaving the score unchanged at the final whistle.
