Feyenoord however, are still hoping that they will be able to keep hold of their star striker and will be discussing his future during the winter-break.
Feyenoord beat AZ 6-1

15 Dec 2002

Feyenoord looked more like their old selves this afternoon with a convincing, and confidence boosting, 6-1 win against Co Adriaanse's AZ in the Kuip. 'Japanese Wizard' Shinji Ono put the Rotterdammers ahead after only two minutes and Pierre van Hooijdoink tapped in a 2nd in the 17th from an Ono assist. Up and coming Chilean  'star' Sebastián Pardo made it 3-0 in the 26th. After the break, Pierre van Hooijdonk scored his 2nd of the afternoon in the 62nd with one of his famous free kicks before Kenneth Perez got one back for the Alkmaarders in the 68th. Shinji Ono headed in his 2nd of the match in the 87th for the 5-1 and Argentinian striker Mariano Bombarda added a 6th in the 90th. The win closes the gap with 2nd placed Ajax, who lost at home to PSV who've gone top, to 5 points.
De Nooijer moves to Feyenoord

13 Dec 2002

Gérard de Nooijer is swapping the Abe Lenstra stadium for the Rotterdam Kuip on a deal for the rest of the season with an option for one more year. The 33 year-old arrived in Friesland, together with his brother Dennis, from Sparta in July 1988 but the central defender has become sidetracked at Heerenveen after picking up an injury. His last match for Heerenveen was on September 19th in the UEFA Cup meeting with National Bucharest.
Paauwe back,Zoetebier/Lodewijks doubtful

13 Dec 2002

Patrick Paauwe was back in training yesterday in the Kuip after a 10 day absence due to to an ankle injury picked up in the Ere Divisie clash with Utrecht. It's expected that the central defender will be able to play in Sunday's home match against AZ. Goalkeepers Edwin Zoetebier and Patrick Lodewijks are also trying to get back into shape after their respective injuries but are still doubtful to make an appearance this weekend with Lodewijks clearly being hampered by his bruised ribs.
Van Gaal wants Pierre van Hooijdonk

10 Dec 2002

According to a story in Dutch daily 'Algemeen Dagblad', Barcelona trainer Louis van Gaal is thinking about trying to lure Feyenoord's Pierre van Hooijdonk to Camp Nou in an attempt to restore domestic honour to the Barça team by getting some more goals scored. Van Gaal will supposedly be speaking to chairman Joan Gaspart tomorrow about some more firepower for the team and other names mentioned are Chelsea's Dutch international Jerrel Hasselbaink and Sporting CP's Brazilian Mário Jardel. Van Hooijdonk is a relatively cheap option for the financially troubled Spanish side who've only put away 18 goals in 13 matches so far in La Liga. P-Air's comment so far is,  "It's nice to know that a club of Barcelona's stature are interested but they'll first have to approach Feyenoord, where my contract runs out at the end of the season, and, in any case, I'd like to know what my club's plans for me are before making any decision."
Surgery for Van Nieuwstadt

10 Dec 2002

Willem II's Jos van Nieuwstadt will undergo keyhole surgery this week to establish the extent of damage to his injured knee. The 23 year-old defender picked up the problem in the 3-1 win against AZ at the weekend and he'll miss the remaining matches before the winter-break. A torn hamstring meant Van Nieuwstadt was on the injured list for the whole of September and the first two weeks of October earlier this season.
Malkowski set for Kuip return

09 Dec 2002

Zbigniew Malkowski may well be set for a return to the Kuip in order to help Feyenoord out of their keeper problems. All four 1st team keepers are injured with the 17 year-old youth keeper Jesper Hogedoorn, who was called up for Saturday's match against Heerenveen, having to replace Carlo l'Ami when he dropped out injured in the 8th minute. Edwin Zoetebier, Patrick Lodewijks and Bas van Wegen are also on the injured list at the Kuip and the 24 year-old Polish goalie Malkowski, who has been stalled with satellite club Excelsior since the summer of 2001, will be needed to fill the gap. Malkowski moved to Rotterdam in 2000 from Polish side Stomil Olsztyn but Feyenoord felt he was not ready for top-flight football yet and lent him to their sister-club Excelsior.

07 Dec 2002

Heerenveen lineup: Hans Vonk, Said Bakkati, Petter Hansson, Johan Hansma, Erik Edman, Mika Väyrynen, Daniel Jensen, Arek Radomski, Romano Denneboom, Mika Nurmela, John de Jong.

Feyenoord lineup: Carlo l'Ami, Song Chong-Gug, Kees van Wonderen, Glenn Loovens, Christian Gyan, Shinji Ono, Paul Bosvelt, Brett Emerton, Robin van Persie,
Thomas Buffel,  Pierre van Hooijdonk.

There seems to be no end to Feyenoord's goalkeeper-misery at the moment with 17 year-old youth-goalie Jesper Hogendoorn forced to replace 3rd choice keeper LÁmi in the 9th minute of the match. After a goalless 1st half the game burst into life. Belgian forward Thomas Buffel put Feyenoord ahead in the 57th minute with his 8th goal of the season, proving once again that he has adapted well to the level of play in the Ere Divisie sinec his period of maturation at satellite club Excvelsior (themselves playing top-flight Dutch football this season). 5 minutes later Mika Väyrynen levelled for Heerenveen with his 4th of the season, coolly netting behind Feyenoord's novice goalie. With 2 more goals via Romano Denneboom (69th) and Mika Nurmela (88) Heerenveen gained another 3 valuable points and climb to 13th place.

07 Dec 2002

Feyenoord will miss midfielder Patrick Pauuwe for tonight's away match against Heerenveen after he picked up an ankle injury in a clash with Anthony Lurling during training. Feyenoord to sign Japanese youth talent?

03 Dec 2002

Feyenoord struggle to beat Utrecht 2-1

01 Dec 2002

Feyenoord lineup: Carlo l'Ami, Christian Gyan, Kees van Wonderen, Patrick Paauwe (68. Glenn Loovens), Song Chong-Gug, Brett Emerton, Paul Bosvelt, Shinji Ono, Thomas Buffel, Anthony Lurling (71. Robin van Persie), Mariano Bombarda (79. Pierre van Hooijdonk).

Utrecht lineup: Harald Wapenaar, Stijn Vreven, Patrick Zwaanswijk, Etienne Shew-Atjon, Alje Schut (52. Robert Roest), Pascal Bosschaart, Jean-Paul de Jong (81. Jordy Zuidam), Stefaan Tanghe, Dave van den Bergh, Igor Gluscevic (86. Arco Jochemsen), Dirk Kuijt.

Feyenoord once again proved to be very (too) dependent on Pierre van Hooijdonk's influence after the Rotterdammers were headed for a draw against Utrecht at the Kuip this afternoon. The tall striker came on for the last 10 minutes of play and revitalized a flagging eleven into a late series of attacks on the Utrecht goal with the desired result - a goal by  Paul Bosvelt to snatch the much-needed points. Australian international Brett Emerton put the home team ahead in the 32nd but Utrecht fought back and deserved a 78th minute equalizer by Stefan Tanghe, a finely judged lob over Carlo l'Ami's head. The Domstad side looked to have earned a point before P-Air's pass was fed through to Bosvelt by Buffel and the Feyenoord captain came up with an equally impressive lob of his own for the late match-winner in the 89th.

Feyenoord to play friendly against Celtic

01 Dec 2002

The latter trophy was won on May 25th 1967 in Lisbon when they beat Inter Milan 2-1. Three years later many of the same players were in the lineup that beat Feyenoord 2-1 in Milan to win the same trophy.
P-Air back in Feyenoord squad tomorrow

30 Nov 2002

Pierre van Hooijdonk's recovery from injury has been speedier than generally thought and Feyenoord-coach Bert van Marwijk has added the 32 year-old striker at the last moment to the squad to face Utrecht tomorrow. P-Air successfully completed a training session today and Van Marwijk immediately decided to include him in the group who will take on the Domstad side in the Kuip. Hopefully he'll inspire his team to put on a better performance than in recent matches although he'll probably start the match on the bench due to his lack of match-rhythm.
Van den Herik cleared of charges

29 Nov 2002

Feyenoord's chairman Jorien van den Herik has been cleared in court today after being charged with tax-fraud. He'd faced demands by the public prosecutor that he be jailed for one year and that his club be fined €1.13 million Euros in connection with the transfer of Aurelio Vidmar in 1995.
Ferne Snoyl back in Feyenoord squad

28 Nov 2002

Ferne Snoyl is returning to Feyenoord's 1st team squad as trainer Bert van Marwijk searches for players who will put in more satisfying performances than have been witnessed in recent matches. The 17 year-old spent a short spell in the squad at the beginning of the season but was dropped back to Jong Feyenoord and now has a second chance to prove himself again.
Conflicting news on Park front

28 Nov 2002

While PSV's press officer Pedro Salazar is claiming that the transfer of Kyoto Purple Sanga's Park Ji-Sung is just a matter of time, Feyenoord are elswhere reported to have put in a serious move for the South Korean international. "We've agreed in principle to a contract for three and a half years but nothing's been signed yet", said Salazar. "Although both PSV and Park are able to pull out I'm confident that the deal will go through", he added.
Pieter Collen back on injured list

27 Nov 2002

There seems no end to Feyenoorder Pieter Collen's injury problems! The Belgian defender picked up an ankle injury while playing for Jong Feyenoord against Jong RKC Waalwijk on Monday and will be headed into hospital for an MRI-scan if he continues to experience pain during the coming days. A string of injuries has meant the 22 year-old has only managed to make 4 Ere Divisie appearances since joining the club back in the summer of 2001.
Lodewijk's in cautious return to training

27 Nov 2002

Feyenoord's keeper problems have been gven a boost with the news that Patrick Lodewijks has made a cautious return to training. The Kuip side's reserve goalie has been out with a hamstring injury as well as 5 bruised ribs but hopes to be able to play again before the winter-break. 1st choice keeper Edwin Zoetebier will remain on the injured list till after the break leaving 3rd choice goal-stopper Carlo l'Ami between the posts.
Van Wonderen back against Utrecht?

25 Nov 2002

Feyenoord's Kees van Wonderen hopes to be back for Sunday's clash against Utrecht in the Kuip. The 33 year-old defender picked up an injury during the preparations for Saturday's disappointing 1-0 defeat by RKC Waalwijk. Low budget-High profile RKC beat Feyenoord this evening in an entertaining 1-0. Jason Oost scored the one and only goal of the night, 8 minutes before the end of the game.

Van Persie back against RKC

23 Nov 2002

Robin van Persie will be in the Feyenoord squad for tonight's match against RKC Waalwijk after being dropped for last weekend's match against PSV. He's proved to trainer Bert van Marwijk that he's sufficiently motivated during training which is why he's back - it's as simple as that and both trainer and Van Persie are tired of all the negative stories that appear whenever he's left out of the squad.
P-Air's return delayed for further 2 weeks

22 Nov 2002

Pierre van Hooijdonk's return to duty has been delayed for a further two weeks as the Feyenoord striker is still suffering from the shinbone-fracture picked up in the Ere Divisie clash against Ajax on October 6th. De Haan to leave Feyenoord

20 Nov 2002

Ferry de Haan has announced on Feyenoord's official site that he will be hoping to leave during the winter-break transfer window. "I see no future for me at the Kuip although there are as yet no offers from other clubs". The 30 year-old has played for Feyenoord since 1998 and had a good run of performances at the beginning of 2001 but was diasspointed not be able to play for Oranje in tha year due to an injury which prevented him from playing in the friendly against Turkey. Since then he's become sidelined and has lost his place in the squad to the younger defender Glenn Loovens.

According to reports in Japanese newspapers, Feyenoord are targeting Naohiro Takahara. The Rotterdammers' technical director Rob Baan is currently in japan for a working-visit and will be watching the coming friendly between Japan and Argentina as well as the league fixture involving Kawasaki Verdy and Júbilo Iwata, Takahara's current club. The 23 year-old forward, who's also made several appearances for the national team, played for Argentinian side Argentijnse Boca Juniors last year and is currently top-scorer in the Japanese J-League on 25 goals.
Feyenoord discipline Van Persie

19 Nov 2002

Feyenoord have disciplined Robin van Persie for the 2nd time this season, this time as a result of his unsatisfactory attitude in the aftermath of the C-L defeat by Newcastle United. The 19 year-old was dropped for the clash with PSV at the weekend after earlier this season being sent home after an earlier C-L clash against Fenerbahçe (thereby missing out on the European Super Cup against Real Madrid).

19 Nov 2002

Feyenoord's 2nd choice goalie Patrick Lodewijks has picked up 5 bruised ribs in a clash with Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink during last Sunday's win against PSV and is doubtful to play in Saturday's match against RKC. Park is transfer-free as of December 1st and both clubs are keen to snap him up.
PSV lose to Feyenoord 1-2

17 Nov 2002

PSV lineup:Waterreus - Břgelund, Ooijer, Faber, Bouma - Rommedahl, van Bommel, Vogel, Robben - Vennegoor of Hesselink, Kezman

Feyenoord lineup:Lodewijks - Song C G, van Wonderen, Paauwe, Rzasa - Emerton, Bosvelt, Ono, Lurling - Buffel, Bombarda.

PSV drop valuable points and their top of the table position after this defeat by Feyenoord. PSV will undoubtedly feel robbed of an early goal when referee René Temmink disallowed a Mateja Kezman goal, Patrick Lodewijks allegedly being hindered by Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Nonetheless, Guus Hiddink's lads had several other chances to go ahead but lacked the sharpness to get them into the back of the net. 'Japanese Wizard' Shinji Ono showed them how in the 29th, rounding off a nice one-two between Mariano Bombarda and Thomas Buffel with a fine shot for the 0-1. It signalled a PSV decline and 14 minutes later Thomas Buffel made it 0-2 for the Rotterdammers with a smart lob over Waterreus' head in the 43rd. Danish international Dennis Rommedahl got one back for the home team in the 54th as they team improved their performance while still having trouble creating thengs needed. Feyenoord now climb to within one point of Guus Hiddink's team.

Hofland misses PSV - Feyenoord

16 Nov 2002

Zoetebier's return delayed

15 Nov 2002

Edwin Zoetebier's return to action has been delayed as it's taking longer for his knee injury to clear up than was hoped. The club's medical team have decided it would be prudent for him to rest for a couple of weeks rather than aggravate the problem by trying to return too soon. The strain of the last couple of months have aggravated a torn knee ligament picked up in the C-L match against Juventus on October 29th. It may even take till after the winter-break before he makes a full return to duty.
Jail sentence for Van den Herik?

13 Nov 2002

The Dutch Public Prosecutor has called for Feyenoord chairman Jorien van den Herik to receive a jail sentence of one year and Feyenoord a fine of €1.13 million Euros for alleged tax-fraud. Documents found during a police raid on the club back in 1998 apparently show that the club wanted to avoid paying taxes on the transfers of Christian Gyan, Aurelio Vidmar and Patrick Allotey. A verdict in the case is expected this Friday.
Feyenoord lose to Newcastle United 2-3

13 Nov 2002

Feyenoord almost managed to turn this match around in the 2nd act, fighting back from being 0-2 down to level the score before a late goal by Craig Bellamy (his 2nd of the evening) put Feyenoord out of the C-L and out of Europe altogether as they fail to qualify for the UEFA Cup. The Rotterdammers looked out of sorts and lacking in confidence during theng half, clearly missing the presence of Pierre van Hooijdonk while Bobby Robson's boys settled down to play their game of feeding those long balls to Alan Shearer. One of his headers was picked up by Craig Bellamy who slotted it past Patrick Lodewijks in injury time of the 1st half (46th) and, only minutes into the 2nd act, Hugo Viana made it 0-2. Feyenoord fought back and Argentinian striker Mariano Bombarda pulled one back with a fine piece of work in the 65th, surging into the box to slot home Kalou's pass. Six minutes later Anthony Lurling drew them level and the Kuip side were suddenly rejuvenated but, although they came close with a couple of efforts, the revival was not enough and United's 3rd in injury-time was the nail in Feyenoord's European coffin.
Zoetebier out tonight,Kalou & Bosvelt play

13 Nov 2002

Feyenoord will miss goalie Edwin Zoetebier for tonight's Champions League clash with Newcastle United as he's still suffering from the injury he picked up in the match against Juventus. It's unclear for how much longer he'll be out of action and for the time being he'll be replaced by Patrick Lodewijks. Good news for trainer Bert van Marwijk is that striker Bonaventure Kalou and captain Paul Bosvelt will be able to play.
Feyenoord's Kalou breaks finger

12 Nov 2002

A visit to hospital has revealed that Bonaventure Kalou has broken a finger in the 2-0 win against Zwolle at the weekend and is doubtful to play in tomorrow's Champions League clash with Newcastle United. Trainer Bert van Marwijk will decide today whether not Paul Bosvelt (calf injury) and Edwin Zoetebier (knee problem) will be able to play while Shinji Ono will be sitting out his suspension and Pierre van Hooijdonk is still on the injured list.
Feyenoord's keeper problems grow

11 Nov 2002

Feyenoord find themselves in increasingly serious keeper problems with Edwin Zoetebier, Patrick Lodewijks and Ronald Graafland already on the injured list. The latest blow is the news that Bas van Wegen will be unable to play in the home match against Utrecht this weekend. Jong Feyenoord's keeper picked up a red card in yesterday's match against Jong RKC Waalwijk.
Feyenoord beat Zwolle 2-0

09 Nov 2002

Feyenoord lineup: Lodewijks - Gyan, van Wonderen, Paauwe, Rzasa - Song C G, Emerton, Ono - Buffel, Kalou, Lurling.

Zwolle lineup: van der Werff - Kras, R. Roelofsen, Ravensbergen, van der Haar - de Ridder, Schol, Schops - Bosschaart, Promes, Lim-Duan.

A lacklustre Feyenoord took their time getting into gear against Zwolle and it took a dubious penalty for them to finally go into the lead after 65 minutes when 'Japanese Wizard' Shinji Ono put away the spot-shot. Substitute Mariano Bombarda made it 2-0 only minutes later, effectively ending Zwolle's resistance. The visitors had been able to hold their own against the Rotterdammers during theng half and Marino Promes, in particular, was a regular threat for the Feyenoord defence. After the break trainer Bert van Marwijk brought on Robin van Persie for Christian Gyan and Bombarda for the injured Bonaventure Kalou with the desired effect.

Feyenoord's Collen hopes to play again soon

07 Nov 2002

Pieter Collen is dying to get a chance to turn out for Feyenoord's 1st team, and the sooner the better! The Belgian defender joined the Rotterdammers from NEC last season but injury problems prevented him from making more than a few appearances. So far this season he's been fit for match-action but trainer Bert van Marwijk has so far preferred to field other players. Still, Feyenoord face a tough few weeks ahead of them and the 22 year-old hopes that he is almost certain to get his chance and it's certainly about time!"
Song stays in Rotterdam for Korea friendly

06 Nov 2002

Bert van Marwijk has no intention of letting Song Chong-Gug play for South Korea in their friendly against Brazil on November 20th. "Not only is the friendly exactly in between two important matches for us (RKC and PSV) but also because Song is simply not fit at the moment", he explained in Dutch football-weekly 'Voetbal International'. 'Japanese Wizard' Shinji Ono will also be staying in Holland while Japan play their friendly as he's been given a leave of absence by his national team's coach Zico as Ono did play against Jamaica last month.
Van Hooijdonk misses Newcastle match

05 Nov 2002

Pierre van Hooijdonk will not be fit in time for Feyenoord's crucial Champions League match against Newcastle United next week. Hospital examination of his shinbone fracture has revealed that the injury is insufficiently healed for him to be able to resume full training. Van Hooijdonk will also almost certainly miss the important Ere Divisie clash against PSV on November 20th and it remains uncertain exactly how much longer it will take before he can return for duty.
Groningen lose to Feyenoord 0-2

03 Nov 2002

Groningen lineup: Beukenkamp - Elshot, Schoenmakers, Kruiswijk, Florén - Krstev, Broerse - Ikedia, Drent, Tuhuteru, Salmon.

Feyenoord lineup: Lodewijks - Rzasa, Van Wonderen, Paauwe, Song C G - Bosvelt, Ono, Buffel, Emerton - Kalou, Lurling.

Groningen continue to suffer at the bottom of the table after their 8th defeat of the season and only un point in their favour. All in all a disappointing start for new trainer Ron Jans although his team did fight hard throughout the 1st half to stay in the running. Two goals in the early part of the 2nd act put an end to the Groningen resistance and from then on they were no match for the visitors. Korean international Song set the freshly capped Belgian international Thomas Buffel to put the Rotterdammers ahead in the 47th and 'Japanese Wizard' Shinji Ono added a 2nd in the 55th. The win gives Feyenoord the points and takes them into 3rd place on 20 points from 10 games.

Feyenoord thrash Willem II 5-0

26 Oct 2002

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier - Emerton - Van Wonderen, Paauwe, Rzasa, Song C G - Bosvelt, Ono - Lurling, Kalou - Buffel.

Willem II lineup: De Vlieger - Jaliens, Van Nieuwstadt, Janssens, J. Mathijsen - Landzaat - Van der Gun - Victoria - Ceesay, Shoukov - Sektioui.

Feyenoord did a good job of erasing Wednesday's 2-0 Champions League defeat by beating the Tricolores 5-0 at the Kuip. Captain Paul Bosvelt, back from injury,d the score in the 13th. Cedric van der Gun drew the Tilburgers level in the 40th but Cameroon striker Bonaventure Kalou put the Rotterdammers ahead again in the 44th. Three minutes into the 2nd act Anthony Lurling added a 3rd, South Korean international Chong-Gug Song scoring the 4th in the 51st. The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 53rd when Jattoo Ceesay got his marching orders and a happy Lurling, visibly shaking off his uncertain start to the season, profitted from the advantage by getting his 2nd of the evening in the 66th. It will be an encouraging result and performance for Van Marwijk and his boys ahead of their next C-L clash.

Feyenoord trial for US defender

26 Oct 2002

Feyenoord are determined to try and find a new right-back to replace the injured Ramon van Haaren and have invited US international Carlos Bocanegra for a trail beginning on Monday. The 23 year-old, who currently plays for Chicago Fire, made his internation al debut on December 9th 2001 when he appeared for the 2nd half of the 1-0 defeat by South Korea. He's regarded as a promising talent by both the Rotterdammers and the American football association (USSF) and last season was voted best Major League Soccer newcomer.
Van Haaren out of action with muscle injury

24 Oct 2002

Ramon van Haaren is out of action again after picking up a muscle injury during yesterday's Champions League duel against Dynamo Kiev. The news comes as a blow for the left-back who's only played two matches since recovering from a hamstring injury that put him on the sicklist at the beginning of the season. Trainer Bert van Marwijk will also miss the injured Pierre van Hooijdonk and the suspended Bonaventure Kalou for the following Champions League match against Juventus.
Feyenoord lose 2-0 to Dynamo Kiev

23 Oct 2002

Feyenoord had no chance against the Ukrainian champions Dynamo Kiev and the 2-0 defeat ends their unbeaten run of 15 European matches. Without top-scorer Pierre van Hooijdonk and captain Paul Bosvelt they were a pale shadow of the team that won the UEFA Cup last season. Feyenoord fielded Glenn Loovens in defence so that Kees van Wonderen could move into midfield to take the place of Paul Bosvelt resulting in an unorganised and shaky backline. The Ukrainians looked far more focussed and better organised so it was little surprise when they went ahead after 16 minutes when Belarus international Oleksandr Khatskevich tapped in ther from a corner. Kiev fell back, relying on their favoured counter-tactic which left Feyenoord plenty of space to create some moves of their own but the Rotterdammers failed to do so. Trainer Bert van Marwijk took note and replaced Robin van Persie with Anthony Lurling in the 39th. It didn't help change the balance of power and Feyenoord found themselves 2-0 down after only two minutes of the 2nd act when Valentin Belkevich slotted home a Maxim Shatskykh cross. Feyenoord never recovered while Kiev were content to play out the rest of match without over-exerting themselves. The appearance of striker Mariano Bombarda for the Rotterdammers also proved ineffective in changing the course of the match.
Feyenoord close to 2nd round C-L

23 Oct 2002

Feyenoord are guaranteed a place in the 2nd round of the Champions League if they win their away leg against Dynamo Kiev tonight. They are handicapped by the absence of top-scorer Pierre van Hooijdonk but Patrick Paauwe returns from injury at the expense of Glenn Loovens while the lineup remains the same as faced Vitesse at the weekend with Bonaventure Kalou and Thomas Buffel up front and Robin van Persie in prefernce to Chilean attacking midfielder Sebastián Pardo.
Feyenoord target Czech player

22 Oct 2002

Feyenoord are targeting midfielder Jirí Jarošik, at least according to comments by his agent in the Czech media. The 25 year-old Sparta Prague player is regarded as one of his country's most promising talents. He made quite an impression when his team beat Feyenoord in last season's Champions League, scoring a terrific freekick goal during the 2-0 defeat at the Kuip after his team had beaten the Rotterdammers 4-0 at home. It's rumoured that the asking price would be in the region of €6 million Euros.
Pauuwe ready for Dynamo Kiev

22 Oct 2002

Feyenoord defender Patrick Paauwe is ready for Wednesday's Champions League match in the Ukraine against Dynamo Kiev. "I'm not 100% fit yet but I'm travelling with the squad and expect to play." Paauwe missed Saturday's Ere Divisie at, and against, Vitesse (1-1) due to a hamstring injury. It's uncertain yet whether or not Paul Bosvelt is fit enough to travel as he's still troubled by a thigh strain that was aggravated in Saturday's game although he too expects to travel with his teammates for the C-L clash.
Vitesse and Feyenoord draw 1-1

19 Oct 2002

Vitesse lineup: Jevric - Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Fränkel - Levchenko, Rankovic, Amoah, T. Janssen - Mustapha, Peeters, Claessens.

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier - Emerton, Van Wonderen, Loovens, Van Haaren - Song C G, Bosvelt, Ono, Van Persie - Buffel, Kalou.

Feyenoord, who've only earned one point in their last three Ere Divisie matches, played without the injured Patrick Paauwe and Pierre van Hooijdonk who were replaced by Glenn Loovens and Bonaventure Kalou. Robin van Persie returned to the starting lineup in favour of Chilean wing-half Sebastián Pardo. The changes didn't help the Rotterdammers and Feyenoord drop more valuable championship points with this 1-1 at Vitesse. The Arnhemmers were the hungrier side in theng half, putting their opponents under pressure and deservedly going ahead in the 32nd when Matthew Amoah scored. Feyenoord took over after the break but, apart from Thomas Buffel's equalizer in the 57th, didn't manage to score the necessary goals, with Buffel missing their last injury-time opportunity.

Feyenoord trial for Dennis Masina

19 Oct 2002

Feyenoord currently have Swaziland midfielder Dennis Masina on trial - the Rotterdammers have an option to buy the player who impressed during Swaziland's 2-1 win against Libia in the African Nations Cup last Sunday. Masina has already been on trial with the Rotterdammers and Tottenham Hotspur are also waiting to snap him up if Feyenoord decline to make use of their option.
Feyenoord boycott visit to Vitesse

18 Oct 2002

In another row over away ticket allocations Feyenoord have rejected Vitesse's offer of 900 for the weekend's clash in the Gelredome and the club amangement will also be boycotting the match. Normally the Rotterdammers could expect to get 1200 tickets but Arnhem city council and police authoprities have said they can't cope with a larger group of supporters.  Feyenoord have protested to the Dutch FA (KNVB) but it's too late to hear the appeal before the match itself.
Van Hooijdonk out of action for 4 weeks

18 Oct 2002

Feyenoord will miss Pierre van Hooijdonk for the coming 4 weeks after it was discoverd that the Rotterdammers topscorere (7 goals) has a hairline fracture of his right ankle. The Dutch international will certainly miss the Champions League clashes with Dynamo Kiev and Juventus. Van Hooijdonk picked up the injury in the Ere Divisie clash with Ajax but joined the Oranje squad for the match against Austria and was even given a place on the bench. As the ankle was still bothering him the striker had x-rays made which revealed the source of the problem.
Feyenoord and Van den Herik in court

12 Oct 2002

Feyenoord and their chairman Jorien van den Herik have been summoned to appear in court on charges of tax fraud after the court rejected all arguments put forward by the club's lawyers. The case concerns several  transfers where players received a cut of the transfer-fee which the internal revenue in Holland say are 'wages'and subject to tax. Feyenoord point out that the clubs who've bought the players are responsible for the payments and they are 'innocent bystanders'. The case willnext Friday when evidence will be presented  to the court and witnesses heard.
Feyenoord target more Chilean players

11 Oct 2002

Midfielder Sebastián Pardo has made such a positive impression at the Kuip that Feyenoord are currently targeting a couple of other Chilean players. Universidad Catolica defender Waldo Ponce and midfielder Cristian Muńoz are being lined-up as possible additions to the Rotterdammers' squad. Pardo arrived last summer and lost no time in impressing coach Bert van Marwijk, crowning his debut against Excelsior with a goal and scoring a spectacular match-winner in the Champions League against Newcastle United at St. James' Park. His performances have earned him a regular place in the lineup while also attracting the attentions of English clubs who wanted to lure him away but Feyenoord have just made use of the option to buy him and he's signed a deal for the coming 5 years.
Feyenoord trials for young foreign players

09 Oct 2002

Feyenoord have offered three young foreign players a trial at the Kuip during the coming week. Finnish fifteen-year-olds Tim Sparv and Roma Yeremenko will be joined by Dennis Messina from Swaziland, who's already had a trial with the Rotterdammers. He will train with the reserve team Jong Feyenoord while the Finnish duo will train with the club's under 16s.
Feyenoord buy Sebastián Pardo

08 Oct 2002

Feyenoord have made use of their option to buy the talented young Chilean midfielder Sebastián Pardo from his club Universidad de Chile and he's signed a deal for 5 years with the Kuip side. Bert van Marwijk gave the thumbs-up to the Rotterdammers to buy the 21 year-old international who's impressed with his performances and scored the winning goal against Newcastle United in the Champions League at St. James Park
Feyenoord trial for American keeper

07 Oct 2002

Feyenoord have offered a trial to the American goalkeeper Tim Howard who'll be trainnig with the Rotterdammers during the coming two weeks. The 23 year-old currently plays for the New Jersey MetroStars and is regarded at home as being one of his country's top talents. Howard has been a member of all the United Sates various national teams, making his debut for his country at full international level on March 10th in the friendly against Ecuador (1-0).
Bosvelt misses Oranje v Austria?

07 Oct 2002

Paul Bosvelt may have to pull out of Oranje's EURO 2004 qualifier against Austria after picking up a muscle strain in yesterday's classic duel with Ajax. He'll be examined in hospital today to see what the extent of the damage is. At the moment it's uncertain if the match itself will go ahead as planned on October 16th due to the death yesterday evening of Prins Claus, husband to Holland's Queen Beatrix. The state funeral may well take place on the same evening as the match!
Ajax win at 1-2 at Feyenoord

06 Oct 2002

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier - Emerton, De Haan, Paauwe, Rzasa - Song C G, Bosvelt, Ono, Pardo - Buffel, Van Hooijdonk.

Ajax lineup: Stekelenburg - Trabelsi, Bergdřlmo, Chivu, Van Damme - Galásek, Litmanen, Witschge - Pienaar, Ibrahimovic, Wamberto.

Ajax go equal top after this away win at the Kuip, just behind PSV on goal difference. After anng spell where there was little to choose between the two teams till theng goal, beautifully curled in by Wamberto. From then on the Amsterdammers were completely in control during the rest of the half. Ajax were again inspired by the presence of Jari Litamanen, the Fin forming the hub of a well organised midfield. He missed out on several chances to score but a solo move by Steven Pienaar set up Litmanen with the 2nd goal in the 43rd. The 0-2 half-time score was richly deserved. Ajax started off in the same vein after the break but couldn't maintain the tempo, allowing Bert van Marwijk's team to get back into the match. The half-time introduction of Van Persie and Kalou, for Thomas Buffel and Sebastián Pardo, had introduced a bit more aggression into the Rotterdammer's game which at first didn't amount to more than a shot on the bar by Van Persie and the one goal by Pierre van Hooijdonk in the 56th minute. Feyenoord kept plugging away and Ajax had to hold on from then on while the Rotterdammers got the best chances to score but both Van Hooijdonk and Bonaventure Kalou failed to beat Maarten Stekelenburg. Feyenoord are now 6 points adrift of the top-two.

Feyenoord miss Leonardo for 1-more-month

05 Oct 2002

Feyenoord will have to miss Brazilian winger Leonardo I for a while longer after doctors at the Erasmus Medisch Centrum in Holland concluded that he's not ready to make his return just yet. Feyenoord had hoped that the 19 year-old, who picked up a small ankle bone fracture back in August, would be back in action by now but it will be at least another month. Leonardo himself is even more sombre, expecting that he will not be match-fit before the other side of the winter-break.
Feyenoord v Ajax - Classic Dutch Derby

05 Oct 2002

Tomorrow is the first classic derby of the season with two age-old opponents from Holland's two largest towns standing off against each other in one of the best stadiums in Europe for atmosphere and football - the Rotterdam Kuip. The distractions of this week's Champions League football has overshadowed the approach of this duel between the Dutch giants while there's already a lot at stake, especially for Feyenoord. A defeat at home by Ajax would be a major setback early in the season,ng up the gap between the two clubs to 8 points. "This match is particularly important because Holland will only be able to enter two teams in the Champions League next season, meaning an end-of-season 3rd place is no longer good enough", explained Ajax-trainer Ronald Koeman.
"A defeat would be bad for the team's spirit and morale", said Feyenoord defender Kees van Wonderen. It's doubtful whether he'll actually be fit to play after suffering a hamstring injury which meant he missed Tuesday's C-L match against Kiev. "You used to be able to become champions by beating the small teams but nowadays you've got beat Ajax to win." The coming two weeks rest, due to the imminent internationals taking place, will be most welcome for both teams. Feyenoord have played 12 matches in the last 6 weeks while Ajax have only played 10! The tell-tale and ever growing list of players who've gone on the injured list says it all!
Ajax will be glad to welcome the return of the ever influential Jari Litmanen in time for the match. He stayed at home while the team travelled to Norway for the C-L match against Rosenborg and worked in his own very personal, driven style to get himself fit again after picking up his hamstring injury. Young goalie Maarten Stekelenburg is also engaged in a similar struggle to regain fitness in time for tomorrow's match. The timing couldn't be better for
Koeman as his goalkeeper problems just keep on growing with Joey Didulica, who'd replaced Stekelenburg when he picked up his injury, himself dropping out with an ankle injury. Of the 5 keepers in Amsterdam not one is fully fit - Robert Zwinkels and Bogdan Lobont have shoulder problems plus even Henk Timmer is being troubled by a hamstring injury but he'll take a place on the bench.
Thomas Buffel called up for Belgium

05 Oct 2002

Feyenoord's Thomas Buffel has received his debut call-up for for the Belgian national team who play EURO 2004 qualifiers on October 12th and 16th against Andorra and Estonia. "Red Devils" (Rode Duivels) coach Aimé Anthuenis has also called up Roda's Tom Soetaers, Vitesse striker Bob Peeters and Willem II keeper Geert de Vlieger.

Feyenoord and Dynamo Kiev in 0-0

01 Oct 2002

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier, Emerton, Paauwe, De Haan, Rzasa, Song, Bosvelt, Ono, Pardo, Van Hooijdonk, Buffel.

Dynamo Kiev lineup: Reva, Bodnar, Nesmasnjy, Ghioane, Peev, Goesin, Gavrancic, Cernat, Kjatskevitsj, Sjatskikh, Melasjenko.

Feyenoord got off to an energetic start and had a goal-scoring moment in theng minutes but Bosvelt's missile went just wide. Kiev started cautiously but soon showed how fast and dangerous they were in the counter, Peev hitting the crossbar in the 12th. It very almost went in and had Edwin Zoetebier beaten. Some of the Feyenoorders were not really in the game and there were too many mistakes being made while their opponents gave them very little room to create moves. As the half progressed Feyenoord were unable to rally themselves and impose their will on the Ukrainians. Even a couple of freekicks which normally (even from an unlikely and impossible angle) would have threatened an opponent were damp squibs compared to the quality we expect from the Rotterdammers. By the end of the 45 minutes the only stats were a yellow card for P-Air and one for Gavrancic. Feyenoord came out looking sharper than in theng half and created some good moves with Pierre van Hooijdonk trying an athletic attempt at a shot which wnet wide in the 53rd. Finally they were getting into gear as Ono shot just wide in the 54th. Van Persie came on (to the delight of the crowd) in the 54th, replacing Pardo. Another foul by Gavrancic on P-Air gave the striker another chance at a freekick special in the 58th but it went straight into the keeper's hands. Another freekick only a minute later came off the wall and van Persie's shot at the rebound almost went in off Song but the goalie was very alert in saving it. Kalou came on for Buffel in the 66th and made his presence felt immediately with some dangerous runs. Feyenoord upped the pressure and pushed the visitors back. Tomas Rzasa twisted his knee in the 72nd which looked like being another piece of bad injury news for the Rotterdammers but thankfully 'bounced back' onto pitch a couple of minutes later. The addition of Kalou and Van Persie was an added catalyst for Feyenoord who launched a steady 15 minutes barrage at the Ukrainian-end but the visitors held firm while the Rotterdammers lacked that last bit of power and sharpness. Kiev were even denied what looked like a clear penalty denied 2 minutes before the end. Bert van Marwijk will be disappointed that his team's pre-match fears of not putting any balls past the Ukrainians came true while being glad that the last couple of threatening Kiev attacks in injury-time didn't end in a goal-against!

Feyenoord - Kiev... preview

01 Oct 2002

Feyenoord are favourites to win tonight's Champions League match against Dynamo Kiev but will have to work hard trying to penetrate the Ukrainian side's defensive wall while being wary of their opponent's potential for the fast-counter. Bert van Marwijk has already admitted that he knows nothing about most of the Kiev players and the two teams have never met before. As far as form is concerned the trainer can only go on how well the Ukrainians have performed in the C-L where theyd with a surprising 2-0 win against Newcastle United but went on to lose 5-0 to Juventus. Their defence will almost certainly make a mistake at some point, as they have done in their last 20 C-L matches, conceding at least one goal in each (a C-L record). Feyenoord's form is also inconsistent with good performances in the C-L (1-1 at home to Juve and 1-0 away against Newcastle) but some dubious performances in the Ere Divisie where they managed to lose 5-2 at RBC Roosendaal last Saturday! The match also saw Kees van Wonderen drop out with a relatively serious injury, he'll be replaced by Ferry de Haan tonight, while Pierre van Hooijdonk and Song Chong-Gug have since been troubled by slight strains/pains. The match against RBC was a warning that concentration will continue to be all-important, even against lesser-teams, and a lapse of concentration could prove fatal in the C-L.
Dynamo Kiev...Feyenoord's C-L opponent

30 Sep 2002

Dynamo Kiev were Ukrainian champions for 9 consecutive seasons before having to stand aside for last season's winners Shakhtar Donetsk. Donetsk, their only real rival, failed to get further than a qualifying match against Belgian side Club Brugge while Kiev beat Bulgarian side Levski Sofia 1-0 in both legs. Dynamo are on the threshold of a new era after the death of their long-time trainer and former international Valeri Lobanovski. The new man at the helm is another former international Alexei Michailitsjenko and he's taken on the challenge of rebuilding the squad with a mix of veterans and up-and-coming talent. Dynamo can boast 10 different nationalities including Romanian Florin Cernat, Belarussians Valentin Bjelkevitsj and Alexandr Kjatskevitsj, together with Uzbechistan's Maxim Sjatskikh and Ukraine's Alexandr Golovko and Andrei Goesin.

Feyenoord miss Van Wonderen against Kiev

30 Sep 2002

Feyenoord will miss defender Kees van Wonderen for the Champions League match against Dynamo Kiev. He picked up a hamstring injury in the defeat at RBC and will be out of action for at least a week. It forces trainer Bert Van Maarwijk to reshuffle his defence but at least Korean defender Song should be fit for Tuesday's match even though he was injured during the same match.

RBC in surprise 4-2 against Feyenoord

28 Sep 2002

RBC lineup: Aerts - Keller, Nascimento, Oliseh, Fleur - de Graaf, Heije, Tininho - den Ouden, Wooter, Vos.

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier - Emerton, van Wonderen, Paauwe, Rzasa - Song C G, Bosvelt, Ono, Pardo, Buffel - van Hooijdonk.

Feyenoord probably thought they were in for a relatively easy 90 minutes football tonight but it all went wrong and they mostly had themselves to blame. Belgian talent Thomas Buffeld the score for the Rotterdammers in the 28th as everything seemed in order. Feyenoord then failed to press home their on-pitch superiority in the form of some goals-in-the-back-of-the-net and paid the price when David Nascimento equalized for RBC in the 43rd, with a header from a Henk Vos cross.  The Rotterdammers had been warned by earlier moments of danger during theng 45 minutes and it was therefore no surprise when a refreshed RBC went ahead with a Geert den Ouden goal 9 minutes into the 2nd half. Although, technically speaking, Feyenoord continued to dominate the play after the break Henk Vos scored a 3rd for the home team on the hour. A P-Air free-kick-special narrowed the gap a little in the 78th before Peter Maseland put the 4-2 on the board in the 90th minute. Bert van Marwijk and his boys will not be pleased!

Feyenoord miss Van Haaren tonight

28 Sep 2002

Feyenoord will miss defender Ramon van Haaren for tonight's Ere Divisie match against RBC Roosendaal. He's still suffering from a hamstring injury he picked up in last week's match against De Graafschap and is also doubtful to be fit in time for next week's Champions League match against Dynamo Kiev. Feyenoord trainer Bert van Marwijk had been hoping for a speedier recovery but it looks as if Van Haaren will not return before next weekend's classic derby between Feyenoord and Ajax. "There's only a small chance he'll be fit for the match against Kiev as he only resumed training on Thursday ".
English clubs want Pardo!

27 Sep 2002

Sebastián Pardo's agent Alan Silberman has upped the pressure on Feyenoord by revealing in Chilean newspaper 'Tercera' that several English clubs have expressed an interest in signing the talented midfielder. Pardo made an impression in England (and elsewhere!) with the 4th minute, and match-winning, goal he scored against Newcastle United at St. James' Park on Tuesday in the Champions League. The Chilean player is currently on loan to the Rotterdammers who have to decide in February whether or not they want to make use of their option to buy him. Silberman has said that certain clubs are already willing to buy that option from Feyenoord although he's advised the 20 year-old to stay with the Kuip side for several years before moving.
Feyenoord beat Newcastle 0-1

24 Sep 2002

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier, Rzasa, Paauwe, Van Wonderen, Emerton, Bosvelt, Pardo, Ono, Song, Van Hooijdonk, Buffel.

Newcastle lineup: Given, Hughes, Dabizas, O'Brien, Griffin, Robert, Speed, Dyer, Solano, Shearer, Bellamy.

A defensive blunder by the Tyneside team gave Feyenoord the chance to strike early and Chilean midfielder Pardo's shot was deflected in for the 0-1 in the 4th minute. Prior to the match Brett Emerton had been asked by the English press why he wasn't playing for Newcastle (after all the interest and negotiations surrounding a possible move by the Australian international to St. James' Park) but the flow of play in this match was a more than fitting answer as the Dutch team simply looked the better team in theng part of the match. Newcastle slowly recovered as Feyenoord began to relax too much, allowing their opponents back into the match, and Van Marwijk began to look a worried man on the sideline - he'd have plenty more to worry about in the 2nd half. Bellamy had a good shot cleared off the line by Emerton, after it had beaten Zoetebier, and in the 41st minute Shearer turned to let loose a shot but Zoetebier saved it, also dealing well with a Bellamy header only seconds later. There were no changes made on either side during the break. Newcastle started to pile on the pressure - Shearer had another almost identical shot to the one in the 41st minute saved in the 52nd and, seven minutes later, saw a header cleared off the line by Ono's head. Feyenoord regained some control over the match after the hour and there came fine shots by Shinji Ono and substitute Anthony Lurling. Bobby Robson's team continued to hammer away at the Feyenoord goal but the Rotterdammers managed to hold on till the final whistle, thanks mainly to the super-excellent Zoetebier, and go home with 3  valuable away points.

Feyenoord - Newcastle .... a preview

24 Sep 2002

Feyenoord are travelling to Newcastle today in search of their first away win against an English side since October 3rd 1979 when they beat Everton 0-1, the only time they've actually beaten an English team away from the Kuip. The last time they beat an English team was in November 1995 when they won 1-0 in the Kuip, coincidentally against Everton, while the following four clashes with Manchester United (twice) and Chelsea (twice) all ended in defeat. Newcastle United have played just the one match against Feyenoord when 'The Magpies' made their European debut in the 1968/1969 season. United won 4-0 at home and lost 2-0 in Rotterdam.
Both teams won their domestic league matches at the weekend, Feyenoord 2-0 against De Graafschap, Newcastle 2-0 against Sunderland. 'The Toons' needed a win after their disappointing 2-0 defeat by Dynamo Kiev and a poor start to the Premiership season. Feyenoord have had a far better start to their domestic season and will be looking to remain unbeaten after a run of 13 games without defeat in Europe and could also do with a win after their 1-1ng C-L match against Juventus.
The Rotterdammers' lineup will be little changed from last week's with Ramon van Haaren missing while Paul Bosvelt will be back.  For Newcastle Craig Bellamy will most likely play, despite the headbutt he gave Kiev's Tiberiu Ghioane. The incident was missed by referee Eduardo Iturralde González but UEFA have launched an investigation.
Van Haaren misses Feyenoord v. Newcastle

23 Sep 2002

Feyenoord will leave Ramon van Haaren at home when they travel to face Newcastle United tomorrow in the Champions League after the defender picked up a hamstring injury. It's bad news for Van Haaren, who missed much of last season due to a knee injury and had to drop out of Saturday's Ere Divisie match against De Graafschap. It's likely that he'll be out of action for the coming 2 weeks.
Feyenoord beat De Graafschap 2-0

21 Sep 2002

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier - Emerton, Van Wonderen, Paauwe, Van Haaren - Song C G, Bosvelt, Ono, Pardo - Van Hooijdonk, Buffel.

De Graafschap lineup: Wevers - Bot, Van der Kruis, Bakens, Hermans - Culina, Van den Brom, Van Leerdam, Turpijn - Van Vossen, Valeev.

Feyenoord didn't have to work too hard to deal with the visiting Doetinchemmers who could only provide meager opposition. Captain Paul Bosvelt returned at the cost of Christian Gyan, otherwise the team was the same as the one that faced Juventus with Brett Emerton dropping back to right-back. It didn't stop the Australian from steaming down the wing to cross the ball for Van Hooijdonk to head in a 6th minuter. That excellent Belgian winger Thomas Buffel pounced on a defensive error by Tim Bakens to increase their lead in the 56th.

Paul Bosvelt back in action tonight

21 Sep 2002

Paul Bosvelt has resumed training with Feyenoord yesterday after some days leave due to the death of his father. The 32 year-old team captain was absent since Monday and missed the Champions League match against Juventus but will be back for tonight's match against De Graafschap.

Van Persie glad of second chance

18 Sep 2002

Robin van Persie has had his first training session with the Feyenoord squad today since returning from his banishment to the reserve squad after the Champions League match against Fenerbahçe on August 27th. Talking to Feyenoord's official site he said,"It's been a difficult couple of weeks for me but I'm glad to have been given a second chance. In particular all the attention the press have given to my 'punishment' and the untruths that have been published concerning my family have been hard too take, for myself as well as my family and friends." Van Persie was brought back in from the 'cold' after reconciliatory talks with trainer Bert van Marwijk on Monday.
Feyenoord and Juventus draw 1-1

18 Sep 2002

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier - Gyan, Paauwe, Van Wonderen, Van Haaren - Song C G, Pardo, Ono, Emerton - Buffel, Van Hooijdonk.

Juventus lineup: Buffon - Thuram, Ferrara, Montero, Birindelli - Tacchinardi, Davids, Camoranesi, Nedved - Di Vaio, Del Piero.

Theng quarter of an hour saw both teams create a few opportunities to score. The Italians upped the pressure at the Rotterdam end and Zoetebier had to pull off a couple of alert and agile saves to keep the scoreboard clean. Corner after corner threatened to end in a successful Juventus strike as Feyenoord's mettle was tested. They stood firm and pushed back  - Ono clearly thought it was time to make his presence felt but his attempt went well over. Their best chance came in the 30th when Song (who had a really good game) surged to the left of the penalty area, crossing the ball across goal but Buffel failed to scramble the ball over the line. Two minutes later Camoranesi volleyed an out-of-the-blue beauty of a strike into the net that flashed past Zoetebier, who may have heard it whistle in but almost probably never saw it. There had been this nagging voice at the back of my mind warning that this could happen at anytime... and there it was... 0-1 to Juventus. Time to move up a  gear and the game began to flow back and forth as Feyenoord tried to get that all important equalizer while Juventus tried to drive in another nail-in-the-coffin goal.  Buffel crossed to Van Hooijdonk who sliced the Rotterdammers' best chance of the half over the goal on the half-hour. As theng 45 minutes drew to an end the Italians seemed to have more of the ball and keep it longer than Van Marwijk's team. Things at half-time could have been completely reversed if, if, if.... Feyenoord had only been that little bit sharper and decisive in the chances that they had made.

In the 2nd half Feyenoord had less problems making an impression on the Italian team, even t hough they remained better in controlling the ball, maintaining possession and controlling midfield. In fact they were outplayed for a short while but, after half an hour's 2nd half action, a soap-opera of a freekick-show ensued. P-Air was given 3 chances to take it and it saw 3 yellow cards handed out to Juve players. His last attempt went straight over the wall and sailed in past a furious Buffon for the equalizer. Feyenoord and their fans were uplifted but would the Rotterdammers be able to find a 2nd goal in the last 10 minutes? Bombarda was brought on for Gyan to give an extra goal-getter up front and it did make a difference but was it enough? In the 88th minute Van Hooijdonk got another chance for a freekick-special but it went straight to Buffon's arms. It was their last chance of the match and they will look back with a feeling of regret that the gods weren't with them this evening.

Sprockel on loan to Excelsior,Olfers returns

18 Sep 2002

Civard Sprockel is making the move to Excelsior to give the satellite club an extra defender while Steve Olfers and the Kralingen side have sorted out their differences. Olfers had returned to the Kuip in a row over wages but the problems have been solved and he's returning to the Woudenstein stadium. The conflict acted as a catalyst to set Sprockel's transfer in motion which means that the defender, who was in danger of stagnating at the Kuip (where trainer Bert van Marwijk can call on Kees van Wonderen, Patrick Paauwe, Ferry de Haan and Glenn Loovens), get's the chance to get in some match-action.
Feyenoord full of confidence

18 Sep 2002

Feyenoord are brimming over with confidence ahead of their Champions League clash with Juventus in the Kuip this evening, especially as their opponents have not won an away duel in the tournament in their last 15 matches. The Rotterdammers already have an impressive run of 12 unbeaten European games behind them, their last defeat was by Bayern München (3-1) in the 1st Round last season, and are determined to reach the 2nd Round of the C-L this time. With some talented new faces in the team (Pardo, Buffel and Song), to add to an already successful lineup that brought home the UEFA Cup, Feyenoord will be looking to revenge themselves for the 5-1 defeat they suffered at the hands of Juventus in 1997/1998. For the Serie A side it's only their 3rd official match of the season - after winning the Supercoppa they had to wait until last Sunday to play the first official match of the new Serie A season due to the conflicts in Italy regarding the TV-rights for the broadcast of matches. They got off to a good start with a 3-0 win against Atalanta which provides Feyenoord with an opportunity to see exactly how far they've come and good they are in comparison to one of Europe's top clubs.
Juventus - Feyenoord's C-L opponent

18 Sep 2002

Juventus profitted from a last-day-of-the-season slip-up by rivals Inter Milan (who lost at Lazio) to grab the Italian title. Since then there've been few noteworthy changes , some bench-warmers have gone, and been replaced by a new set, but coach Marcello Lippi is still hoping to add some big names, including Alessandro Nesta and Hernán Crespo. Last season Lippi won his 4th title in the 7 years he's been with the club  after earlier successes in 1995, 1997 and 1998. He's also taken the team to 3 consecutive Champions League finals, winning one against Ajax in '96, losing the others to Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid. After reaching the semi-final against Manchester United in 1999 Juventus have failed to impress in the tournament. Once again they are currently favourites to win the Serie A this season, with Inter as main rivals, and have a strong lineup including Alessandro del Piero, Pavel Nedved, Gianluigi Buffon, Lilian Thuram, Edgar Davids and David Trezeguet while Marcelo Salas has returned from a nasty knee injury that kept him out of action for much of last season.

Van Persie rejoins Feyenoord squad

17 Sep 2002

Robin van Persie will be rejoining the A squad at the Kuip this Thursday after his period of banishment to the Jong Feyenoord team. Feyenoord-coach Bert van Marwijk and the held talks today which resulted in a return of the young winger to the fold and a chance to prove his worth to the team again. Van Persie has so far played 12 Ere Divisie matches for Feyenoord and 7 in the UEFA Cup.
Twente overrun by Feyenoord 1-5

14 Sep 2002

Twente lineup: Boschker - Van der Doelen, Grujic, El-Brazi, Heubach - Cairo, Cziommer, Ouédraego, Van der Leegte - Booth, Cavens.

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier - Emerton, Van Wonderen, Paauwe, Van Haaren - Song C G, Bosvelt, Ono, Pardo - Buffel, Van Hooijdonk.

Feyenoord put in a convincing performance to overwhelm Twente in the Arke stadium tonight. After Shinji Onod the score in the 24th, Scottish striker Scott Booth drew the Tukkers level only two minutes after Ono'sr later before Buffel returned the advantage to Feyenoord in the 40th and Ono added his 2nd of the evening for the 1-3 in the 45th. Pierre van Hooijdonk took the score to 1-4 in the 66th with a header and Buffel added his second for the 1-5 in the 76th. Korean signing Chong-Gug Song revealed himself to be an excellent addition to the squad. The strong competition between the players has brought out the best in many of them and Song was given the chance to show exactly what he can do, playing an important part in two of the five goals. His cross found 'Japanese Wizard' Shinji Ono waiting to head in ther in the 24th minute and after the break another curling ball was headed in by Pierre van Hooijdonk for the 1-4 in the 66th. Thomas Buffel also had another strong match, crowned with two fine goals, the first a deep lob over Sander Boschker's head and the second an absolute topper. The result was fitting revenge for the two defeats Twente inflicted on the Rotterdammers last term. and is confidence booster as Feyenoord prepare to face Italian side Juventus in the Champions league at the Kuip next week.

Twente - Feyenoord preview

14 Aug 2002

Pierre van Hooijdonk will probably get to play his 250th professional match in Holland tonight against Twente. The 32 year-old striker played 249 at RBC (69 of those in the Eerste Divisie), 68 Eerste Divisie and 47 Ere Divisie matches for NAC,  29 Ere Divisie matches for Vitesse and 36 so far in the Ere Divisie for Feyenoord. Van Hooijdonk made his professional debut for RBC against NAC on September 8th 1989. He's scored 166 goals in those 249 matches.

Paul Bosvelt could celebrate his 300th Ere Divisie match and his 150th in the Feyenoord colours tonight. He made his professional debut for Go Ahead Eagles against NAC on August 12th, 1989 and played his first for Feyenoord on August 21st, 1997 against MVV ( coincidentally also playing three seasons for Twente before his move to Rotterdam in 1997).

For Twente's Spira Grujic tonight's could be his 100th Ere Divisie match! Feyenoord have had a lot of problems playing in Enschede during the last 9 years, winning only two and losing both their matches against the 'Tukkers' last season. Twente have not won any of their last 4 Ere Divisie matches while Feyenoord are currently unbeaten in their last 5.

Lurling runs cold,Van Persie out in the cold

12 Sep 2002

When Anthony Lurling joined Feyenoord he stated that his goal was to become one of the Rotterdammers key players and, at the time,  he was indeed presented to the fans as if he was the signing-of-the-summer. It looks now as if the winger has rather overreached himself as he is clearly having serious trouble finding his feet and form at the Kuip. He was taken off after only 37 minutes in Tuesday's match against Excelsior and was replaced by another of the club's new signings, Chilean midfielder Sebastián Pardo. The South American youngster, who's been quietly making a name for himself in the background, went on to crown his Feyenoord debut with a goal. Lurling's first few months at his new club have not been happy ones, with a stupid red card in a pre-season friendly and a series of disappointing performances with the inevitable substitutions as a result. Van Marwijk has noted that Lurling has appeared to have had lead in his boots during matches and not shown anything like the dribbling-talent he's capable of. If it's a sign of a mental-dip similar to one he experienced during his 2nd year with his former club Heerenveen, it could prove to be a tough job for him to clear the clouds of self-doubt and deal with the incapacitating effects it can have on both body and mind. Trainer Bert van Marwijk is clearly reaching the end of his patience and, with strong competition from the likes of Belgian talent Thomas Buffel, (instant success) Sebastián Pardo and (the sooner-or-later return of) 'enfant terrible' Robin van Persie, it will be increasingly difficult for Lurling to get back a place in the starting lineup.

As far as Van Persie is concerned his return may well be later rather than sooner as he seems to have used up a great deal of good will with his coach in the start of this season. Although Van Marwijk is planning to talk to the youngster this week it could well be a while before he brings him back in from the cold of the reserve squad where he seems to have been behaving himself and doing well!

Kalou punished for late arrival

11 Sep 2002

Bonaventure Kalou has reported this morning for his extra-training resulting from his late arrival for the match between Feyenoord and Excelsior last night for which he was consequently left out of the lineup for the game. It's the punishment the Ivory Coast striker has been handed out by trainer Bert van Marwijk for appearing 20 minutes too late. Due to a strike by Air France personnel Kalou had been stranded in South Africa at the weekend and only arrived back in Holland on Monday night. "Nonetheless," said Van Marwijk, "the club did all it could to get him back in time for the match and then he simply turns up late! It's not good enough and I dropped him straight away."
Feyenoord beat Excelsior 4-1

10 Sep 2002

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier, Gyan, Van Haaren, Van Wonderen, Emerton, Bosvelt, Buffel, Ono, Paauwe, Van Hooijdonk, Lurling.

Excelsior lineup: Malkowski, Buijs, Olfers, Breuer, Mtiliga, Swerts, Koswal, Boutahar, Lopes, Holman, Pinas.

The fans' long wait for the debut of Chilean midfielder Sebastián Pardo was rewarded with the sight of a goal by the young and talented midfielder. Former Willem II striker Mariano Bombarda joined in the fun with a first goal since signing for the Feyenoorders in the last minute of the match for the 4-1. Pierre van Hooijdonk hadd the score for Feyenoord with a spot-shot in the 11th for hands-ball by Danny Buys and added a free-kick special only 3 minutes later for the 2-0. Brian Pinas, who'd gone backwards and forwards between the two clubs during the summer, got one back for Excelsior in the 24th hitting home the rebound from Brett Holmann's attempt which Edwin Zoetebier failed to get under control. Excelsior contributed some attractive football during the rest of the half but their 'big brother' had the best chnaces with a Brett Emerton shot going wide, Danny Buys having to help out on the goalline to clear a Van Hooijdonk header and goalie Zbigniew Malkowski stopping Paul Bosvelt's shot. Pardo, who provided the pass for Bosvelt's attempt, had come on in the 38th minute for the disappointing Anthony Lurling. The 20 year-old took only 15 minutes to score his first for Feyenoord, rounding off Thomas Buffel's pass for the 3-1 in the 53rd minute. The match-tension disappeared after that, despite several more chances for the home team. Feyenoord's other debutant of the evening, Argentinian striker Mariano Bombarda (who appeared in the 70th to loud applause) took a little longer to join in the fun and score but finally found the back of the net in the 90th for the 4-1.

Feyenoord duo debut against Excelsior

10 Sep 2002

Feyenoord's satellite club Excelsior visits the Kuip for the first time in almost 16 years tonight where their big-brother's team will include a couple of new faces. The young Chilean midfielder Sebastián Pardo and former Willem II striker Mariano Bombarda will be making their first appearances in the squad but the club's Korean signing Chong-Gug Song will not as yet be making his debut. The last time the two Rotterdam sides actually played an Ere Divisie match at the Kuip was on September 21st 1986 when Feyenoord won 5-1. Their last meeting at Excelsior's Woudenstein stadium, in the Rotterdam borough of Kralingen, was on April 5th 1987 and ended in an equally convincing 6-1 win for Feyenoord. Excelsior were relegated that season to the Eerste Divisie.
Kalou back for Feyenoord - Excelsior

10 Sep 2002

Feyenoord-trainer Bert van Marwijk could well be able to call on the services of Ivory coast striker Bonaventure Kalou for tonight's match against Excelsior after all! It had begun to look as if Kalou was going to be stuck in Africa yet again, as has often happened in the past after appearances for his country, when a strike by Air France personnel threatened to strand him in South Africa. Whether he'll actually be fit to play tonight is another thing as he only arrived back in Holland late last night!
Feyenoord-De Graafschap a day earlier

04 Sep 2002

The Dutch FA (KNVB) has moved the Ere Divisie match between Feyenoord and De Graafschap forward from the afternoon of Sunday September 22nd to Saturday evening September 21st. It gives the Rotterdammers a chance to get an extra day's rest before facing Newcastle United in the Champions League on September 24th.
Gaston Taument returns to Kuip

03 Sep 2002

Gaston Taument is returning to Holland next week to keep fit at his former club Feyenoord where he'll be training with reserve coach André Stafleu's squad while he continues his search for a new club. The former international (15 caps), who left Austrian side Rapid Wien at the close of last season, has previously turned out for OFI Kreta, Anderlecht and Benfica. He spent 10 seasons in Rotterdam and picked up a Championship medal with the Kuip side in 1993.
Van Persie impresses for Jong Feyenoord

03 Sep 2002

Robin van Persie was in impressive form for Jong Feyenoord in their cup match against ADO Den Haag last night. The Rotterdammers won 6-1 thanks to two goals by Van Persie, a hattrick by Sebastián Pardo and one by Mariano Bombarda. Van Persie has been in 'disgrace' since being sent home after the recent Champions League qualifier against Fenerbahçe last week, thereby missing out on the chance to play in last Friday's Super Cup clash with Real Madrid.  His punishment was 'relegation' to the reserve squad until he's proved he's worthy once more of a place in the 1st team squad!  Coach André Stafleu was satisfied with both his performace and attitude, "Robin scored a couple of great goals, showing the right kind of attitude and putting in the kind of effort one would expect for the team. I'm sure he'll be able to work his way back into the 1st team before long."
Real Madrid beat Feyenoord 3-1

30 Aug 2002

Real Madrid lineup: Casillas - Salgado, Hierro, Helguera, Roberto Carlos - Guti, Makélélé, Zidane, Cambiasso - Figo, Raúl.

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier - Gyan, Van Wonderen, Paauwe, Rzasa - Emerton, Bosvelt, Ono, Lurling - Kalou, Van Hooijdonk.

Real began the match in ambitious mood, they've not won the trophy in their two previous appearances against Chelsea and Galatasaray, and they looked sharp and hungry as the  superstars of Europe went on the hunt for the one trophy they've yet to add to their collection. Tonight's match is their first real test as they prepare for the start of the new Spanish Primera División season but they started as if they'd been playing top teams for weeks. It took only 15 minutes for Roberto Carlos to slide the ball across goal and for an unhappy Patrick Pauuwe to see the ball  bounce off his boot, as he tried to block the pass, and disappear behind Edwin Zoetbier. Feyenoord were going to have to show how much they've really grown these last 18 months if they were to make an impression on these European giants. Unfortunately for them Real were ready to put on a display of absolute top-flight world football! Roberto Carlos was both instigator and finisher of a blurringly-fast move which ended with a blinder of a goal in the 21st, his foot connecting with the ball in a show of deadly assurance as it swept into the top right-hand corner. With such an imposing display of football one can only try to imagine what the hell they will be like when Ronaldo is added to the team??!! After losing their way for the next 10 minutes Feyenoord began to show their renowned character again and launched some threatening moves toward the Real end. Anthony Lurling made the most impressive move of the match (and his best since arriving at the Kuip) for the Rotterdammers in the 39th but his shot went just wide while Paul Bosvelt blasted one over in the 42nd as the Dutch team tried to exert pressure.  Feyenoord must have been wondering what had hit them as they went into the dressing-room at half-time.
They were clearly over the shock of theng half as the 2nd act got underway with some much improved passing of the ball and a real semblance of self-confidence.  In the 55th they launched another attacking move which Paul Bosvelt almost managed to round off with a ball-in-the net, but it landed on the roof of the goal. Feyenoord got a freekick anyway for an earlier 'offence' which Pierre van Hooijdonk magicked over the wall, as he's done so often, in the 56th. A real beauty! The joy of the Feyenoord fans didn't last long as only four minutes later the Rotterdammers' defence was once more clinically slicedfor Guti to head in at the left-post for the 3-1. Van Marwijk's team were not going to bow their heads, however, and the 3rd goal spurred them on to push forward. Ono fired off a shot in the 64th that went just wide of the mark and P-Air had another chance from another freekick in the 66th but it came from too far out to worry or deceive Casillas. Lurling continued to worry the Real defence in what is undoubtedly his best performance so far while the Rotterdammers refused to lie down and gave their expected- all for the fans who'd travelled to Monaco. Despite the entry of substitute Thomas Buffel, who'd earned the applause of Fenerbahçe fans earlier in the week with his fine goal, and a continuing show of Rotterdam-spirit it proved a bridge-too-far for Feyenoord against the uncontested top team of Europe tonight but they can be proud of their performance and they will have learned much to take with them into the Champions League and the Ere Divisie.

Feyenoord send Van Persie home

29 Aug 2002

Robin van Persie has been sent home by trainer Bert van Marwijk after misbehaving himself so badly that it was deemed necessary to discipline the 19 year-old. He's been punished specifically for his behaviour before, and after, Feyenoord's Champions League qualifier against Turkish top-side Fenerbahçe. Van Persie had flown together with the squad from Istanbul to France for Friday's European Super Cup match against Real Mdrid but was immediately put on a flight to Holland. The temperamental forward's uninterested and negative behaviour had forced Vam Marwijk to take the step which will mean that Van Persie will have to reconsider his actions while training with the reserve squad until he's 'seen the light' and 'mends his ways'.
Van Haaren ready for Super Cup

28 Aug 2002

Ramon van Haaren has rejoined Feyenoord's squad and will travel with them to Monaco for the European Super Cup clash with Real Madrid on Friday. The left-back missed the return leg of the Rotterdammers' Champions League qualifier against Fenerbahçe due to a bout of gastric flu but is now fully recovered. The Super Cup is an annual contest between the winners of the previous season's Chamopions League and UEFA Cup.
Feyenoord reject last Newcastle bid

28 Aug 2002

Feyenoord have rejected Newcastle United's latest overture in their attempt to bring Australian international Brett Emerton to Tyneside. The Premiership club wanted to spread out the €12 million Euros fee over 5 years but refused to give a guarantee for the last of the 5 payments which would have been made in September 2005. The Magpies refusal to provide a guarantee for the final payment irritated feyenoord boss Jorien van den Herik no end and he immediately ended all further negotiations with the comment, 'And don't waste my time in the future!"
Feyenoord beat Fenerbahçe 0 - 2

27 Aug 2002

Feyenoord had to undergo an early onslaught by the home team as the match got underway in the 'cooking' atmosphere in Istanbul. They were completely outclassed in the first 10 minutes by Fenerbahçe who threatened several times down the right wing with Ortega coming too close to shooting positions than he should have done. After half an hour's nervous, uncoordinated Feyenoord, with only the alert keeping of Edwin Zoetebier to keep them from going behind, the Rotterdammers began to settle down and put some moves together. It led to their first real attack when some neat passing of the ball gave Emerton the chance to break through into the penalty box but he failed to get the ball past the defenders and when the ball was passed acroos the goal to Kalou he was equally powerless, seeing his swipe at the ball blocked. In the 36th another attempt by the Cameroon striker from the edge of the penalty area shot just over the bar. Feyenoord kept up the pressure but remained unconvincing and failed to convert thengs that came their way. After the break it the 'Japanese Wizard' Shinji Ono who finally put a goal on the board with a 49th minute shot from almost the same position as his 1st leg goal, perhaps further out, but this time with his right foot. Set-up by a Paul Bosvelt pass, Ono slotted home the ball past the Fenerbahçe goalie Rüstü Reçber. At this point the missiles began to descend on Edwin Zoetebier's head as the Fenerbahçe-following made clear their displeasure, protests were made by the Rotterdammers and Van Marwijk, who'd walked onto the pitch to add his voice was banned from the sidelines, himself being pelted by the home-fans as he left for the players' tunnel. The match remainedas Feyenoord refused to shut things down and went on the attack just as often their opponents who did their best but always seemed to lack that bit extra when it came to the last touch of the ball. The ineffective Lurling was replaced by Thomas Buffel, making his European debut, for the last 15 minutes. Rzasa picked up a yellow card in the 81st for the Rotterdammers, their 3rd of the evening after earlier cards for Bosvelt and Kalou (plus a 1st leg card for Emerton) which means they will miss several important players when they play their following C-L match. For Thomas Buffelthis will be a night to remember, scoring a fine goal from the edge of the box in the 89th, the finely judged shot bouncing in off the inside of the left-hand post which was even applauded by Fenerbahçe fans. It was a fitting end to a mature, if sometimes ragged performance for the Rotterdammers who tonight have confirmed their place in the European sub-top.

Feyenoord miss Leonardo and Van Haren

27 Aug 2002

Leonardo and Ramon van Haren  will both be missing  Feyenoord's 2nd leg Champion League qualification match against Fenerbahçe tonight. Van Haren is suffering from a cold and Leonardo has problems with a small fracture in his ankle. It is also doubtful that Leonardo will be fit in time for Feyenoord's Supercup clash with Real Madrid this Friday.
Feyenoord sign Mariano Bombarda

26 Aug 2002

Mariano Bombarda has come back on his decision to hang up his boots and end his playing career by signing a 2 year contract  with Feyenoord.  The Rotterdammers were in need of a stand-in in for Pierre van Hooijdonk now that John Elmander has been lent out to Djurgĺrdens. Bombarda, who has scored 96 goals in 220 Ere Divisie matches, was transfer free.
Emerton on his way to Newcastle?

26 Aug 2002

"I've had a good time with Feyenoord but it's time to move on," were Brett Emerton's words to English paper 'The Mail on Sunday' as he announced that he's on the point of moving to English Premiership side  Newcastle United. The twoi clubs are said to have reached agreement on a fee of 30 Million Euros for the Australian international's transfer ending weeks, months of speculation as to which club would cough up the cash to secure his signature. The 23 year-old's been targeted by sevral English clubs since the beginning of the year including Liverpool and Leeds United but no deal was reached until today's news! Newcastle hope to present their latest signing
at the end of this week.
Van Marwijk looking for striker

25 Aug 2002

Feyenoord trainer Bert van Marwijk has said, last night in front of satellite brodcaster Canal Plus 's cameras, that he's on the look-out  for a striker to replace Johan Elmander. Elmander's has been lent out to Swedish side Djurgĺrdens IF, leaving Van Marwijk with only Pierre van Hooijdonk and
Bonaventure Kalou for the central striker's role. He's not naming names as yet and has also denied that a South-Korean playeris being targeted.
Roda draw with Feyenoord 2 - 2

24 Aug 2002

Roda JC lineup: Kujovic - Sonkaya, Rudge, Luijpers, Filipovic - Van Dijk, Cristiano, Van Dessel, Sérgio - Soetaers, Anastasiou.

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier - Gyan, Van Wonderen, Paauwe, Van Haaren -Emerton, Bosvelt, Ono - Kalou, Van Hooijdonk, Lurling.
Feyenoord managed to gift Roda a point last night with an unaccustomed display of un-Feyenooord-like football, though Roda certainly deserved their point by merit of passion and effort. It was an unusually sloopy performance by Feyenoord-keeper Edwin Zoetebier combined with their growing diffidence that let them down. The Rotterdammers kicked off in style and put the home team under considerable pressure in the Parkstad Limburg Stadion. It resulted in a 13th minute goal by Patrick Paauwe, punishing Roda for some poor defending. A case of increasing over-confidence crept into the UEFA Cup winners' game and Wiljan Vloet's team got the chance to get back into the match, giving their all in the fight for an equalizer. The goal was rather controversial (if you were a Feyenoord supporter that is!) - Edwin Zoetebier
parrying a long-pass out of harm's way that then hit Tom Soetaer's hand before the Belgian struck it home into an empty goal. Refereee Ruud Bossen somehow managed not to see the 'handsball' and allowed the goal. It gave Roda a shot of confidence and they looked better and better while Feyenoord
lost more and more momentum. Anthony Lurling failed once more to convince on the left-wing and was replaced for the 2nd act of the match by young Robin van Persie. He's unfortunately still missing match-rhythm and couldn't please with a display of the dashing kind of performances he put on last season. Roda had the best chances after the break but failed to convert them into goals-in-the-back-of-the-net. Marc Nygaard came closest with a distance blast that hit the post after Bonaventure Kalou had done the same at the other end minutes earlier. Pierre van Hooijdonk, who'd had a poor night, converted a free-kick to draw Feyenoord level and give his team a point to take home. It was P-Air's 10th goal in 8 matches against the Limburgers.

Feyenoord hire Elmander to Djurgĺrdens IF

24 Aug 2002

Feyenoord are hiring out Johan Elmander to Djurgĺrdens IF for the rest of the season. The 21 year-old forward joined the Rotterdammers from Örgryte IS in December 2000, playing 39 matches but only scoring 3 goals since his arrival. He's clearly failed to live up the expectations raised when he went to the Kuip and the move to Scandinavia comes as somewhat of a relief for him. Talking on the club's website he says, "This is the best solution for me as there is little chance of me seeing any Ere Divisie action this season, with Van Hooijdonk and Kalou to compete against, and being a clear 3rd choice for the striker's role. I hope to get more of a chance in Stockholm to play and develop as a player."
Newcastle still interested in Emerton?

23 Aug 2002

According to a report in Dutch newspaper 'Algemeen Dagblad' the English Premiership side Newcastle United have made an official bid for Feyenoord's Australian international Brett Emerton. Feyenoord are denying that there has been any official contact between the clubs since the 'Magpies' last
enquired about the midfielder a month or so ago. Feyenoord's asking price is known to the 'Toons' and any arrangement to spread out that fee is alsofor negotiation but the fact that Emerton is no longer eligible to play Champions League football for Newcastle together with the fact that Feyenoord are not going to drop their asking price would seem to indicate
that this yet another rumour. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW?
Police halt Song's signing session

22 Aug 2002

Feyenoord's new Korean star defender Chong-gug Song was stunned when a crowd of 1,500 fans tried to get in to a signing session the Korean international was attending at a bookstore in his home country. Police had to intervene after 20 minutes when things threatened to get out of hand as Song signed
copies of his biography which is selling like the proverbial hotcakes.
Tininho on trial with RBC

22 Aug 2002

Feyenoord's Brazilian right-back Tininho is on the move again in his search for a new club and is on trial this week with newly promoted RBC Roosendaal. He's been given two days to impress coach Chris Dekker that he's worth adding to the squad after unsuccessful trials with AZ and Belgian side KV Mechelen. "A return to Brazil is not one of my options (yet) after the 3 great years I've had in Holland. RBC is a good team, and looking for a midfielder, so hopefully I'll be luckier this time!"
Ajax and Feyenoord in CNN Top 10

21 Aug 2002

Things can't be that bad with Dutch footbal after all! In the new CNN ranking Ajax have lept in out of blue to occupy 5th place in the American news broadcaster's Top Ten! Feyenoord are also in with a shared 9th place alongside Russian side Lokomotiv Moskow. No.1 are Arsenal, No.2 are Bayern München and No.3 Real Madrid. Liverpool is just ahead of Ajax in 4th place while Valencia, Juventus and Inter Milan are respectively 6th, 7th and 8th.
Glenn Loovens is out of action again

21 Aug 2002

Glenn Loovens is out of action again after picking up a new injury. The Feyenoord defender, who'd only recently returned from an absence due to a hamstring problem, has just undergone an MRI-scan which has revealed that a tendon in his ankle has been torn loose. It will keep him on the sick-list for 4 to 6 weeks.
Kalou happy with central strike role

20 Aug 2002

Bonaventure Kalou has been talking on Feyenoord's site about how contented he is with a new role behind Pierre van Hooijdonk in the centre of the Rotterdammers front-line. "This is my spot, I feel good playing here and I am can make the best contribution to the team from this position." The Ivory coast striker has been out on the right-wing for the last few years but has never made a secret of his desire to play a more central role and his goal against NEC on Sunday seems to have secured him a place behind P-Air.
Lurling fit for Saturday's match at Roda

20 Aug 2002

Anthony Lurling will be back in action this Saturday for Feyenoord away at Roda after picking up a slight ankle injury in Sunday's match against NEC. The winger's ankle was taped immediately after Sunday's match to prevent uneccesary swelling and he skipped training yesterday in order to give the foot a rest.
Feyenoord beat NEC 2-0

18 Aug 2002

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier, Gyan, Van Wonderen, Paauwe, Van Haaren, Emerton, Bosvelt, Ono, Lurling, Kalou, Van Hooijdonk.
NEC lineup: Gentenaar, Wisgerhof, Wielaert, Hesp, Zonneveld, Schuurman, Govedarica, Hersi, Simr, De Nooijer, Demouge.
Feyenoord squeezed past NEC this afternoon and were the better team during the 90 minutes but the Nijmegen side put up plenty of resistance and were not going to be pushed aside. It was a late burst by the Rotterdammers that gave them victory today against a resilient opponent. Temperamental Cameroon striker Bonaventure Kalou tested Bert van Marwijk's patience today (as so often happens) - when he's in the match he's capable of great things, but when he's not he tends to give away the ball far too often. Van Marwijk refused to replace him and was rewarded for his faith when Kalou put away a beauty of a volley in the 77th from a Van Persie pass. 4 minutes later, Australian international Brett Emerton in the 81st gave them the points and their first win of the season.
Excelsior return for Brian Pinas

15 Aug 2002

Excelsior will be getting Brian Pinas back from big brother Feyenoord. The 23 year-old winger was given the chance to prove himself at the Kuip last season but is unlikely to see much match action due to the competition for his position from Leonardo, Robin van Persie and Anthony Lurling.  In order to prevent any slowdown in his development he's decided to return to the newly promoted Kralingen side.
Excelsior get permit for Holman

14 Aug 2002

Excelsior have obtained a work permit for Australian striker Brett Holman. The 18 year-old said, "Cool! I hope that the trainer will field me tonight in the Amstel Cup match against Kranenburg." Holman has been lent to the newly promoted side by 'big-brother' Feyenoord and, though he already had a permit to play for the Kuip club, permission to play for the Kralingen side has taken longer to arrive. Feyenoord are meanwhile still waiting for permits to arrive for new signings Sebastián Pardo and Chong-Gug Sung.
Feyenoord v. Fenerbahçe 1-0

13 Aug 2002

Feyenoord trainer Bert van Marwijk had put his team in the role of underdog going into this match, perhaps a slight piece of psychology, although the Rotterdammers were aware that if the Turkish side had a weakness it was to be found in their defence. Feyenoord are definitely a stronger, more confident team than at the beginning of last season. And so they should be as reigning UEFA Cup champions! Fenerbahçe started with only one man up front and the rest pulled back in their own half, leaving Feyenoord to push forward in a relatively relaxed, cautious tempo. They had their best chance in the 15th minute but Kalou's cross flew past Lurling who couldn't connect with it. Minutes later Gyan pushed past a pair of defenders but his pass failed to connect with Emerton, who's appearance tonight reduces the chance of a move to Leeds or any other club this season to zero. Kalou then broke through the Turkish wall and unleashed a shot which curled over the bar. After 25 minutes of play Fenerbahçe began to push forward and threaten the Rotterdammers, a freekick in the 28th could have proved dangerous but the shot was no problem for Zoetebier. The temperature had been rising for some time and in the 34th Kalou was victim of a kick in the crutch which certainly deserved a red-card for Miroslav Stevic but the French referee didn't dare award it. Emerton's yellow card in the 43rd was the 5th of theng 45 minutes and cards were the only statistics when the whistle went for the break. The first half had been too tight and congested for 'pretty' football, or real goal-scoring chances, the 2nd half would have to be different or the Rotterdammers would have a 'voyage to hell' when they travel for the return in Turkey.
The 2nd half kicked-off in higher tempo - Ramon van Haaren replaced by Tomasz Rzasa giving Feyenoord some more bite. Brett Emerton's 50th minute shot was parried by the fists of goalie Rüstü Reçber. Kalou twisted and turned on the edge of the box in the 52nd, unleashing his 2nd shot of the match but it went over. With the flow of play increasing it gave both teams the chance to exert pressure and there were a good number of counters. In the 59th minute Lurling was replaced by young Leonardo I and Feyenoord began to push forward with greater frequency. Finally their efforts were rewarded when 'Japanese Wizard' Shinji Ono, who'd radiated a serene confidence throughout the match but had not been his usual creative-self, scored after a nice one-two with Pierre van Hooijdonk, sliding it into the left-hand corner with the inside of his left-foot in the 64th minute. The Turkish team got back into the match, due to Feyenoord's indecisiveness following Ono's goal, bringing on Argentinian midfielder Ariel Ortega (surprisingly left-out of the starting lineup) and adjusting their tactics. It proved a wise choice as he almost immediately set-up Haim Revivo with a fine chance to shoot, in the 78th, but Zoetebier was alert and dealt confidently with the effort. At the other end, Kalou was served up with a through ball by P-Air, launching another shot from the edge of the box but it was blocked by Reçber's legs. In the 88th Leonardo was suddenly free on the left and served a beauty of a cross which evaded the otherwise safe-hands of the goalie but there was noone there to connect with it. The whistle finally went for the end of play to give the Rotterdammers their points but they will have a tough return ahead of them in 2 weeks time. P-Air was satisfied after the match with his team's performance - they'd not created many chances but had given little away and have proved last season that they can score away goals too!
Van Persie celebrates return with goal

13 Aug 2002

Robin van Persie has celebrated his return to action, after a long period of injury due to a back complaint and the flu, with a goal scored for Jong Feyenoord against Jong Dordrecht. The left-winger scored theng goal in the 2-0 win and played 80 of the 90 minutes during the match.Defender Pieter Collen also made his reappearance after a preiod on the sidelines due to an ankle injury.
Excelsior's Brett Holman waiting for permit

13 Aug 2002

Excelsior are still waiting for some news concerning Australian Brett Holman's application for a work permit. The 18 year-old shadow-striker, who's been stalled at the newly promoted side by big-brother Feyenoord, looks likely to miss theng match of the new season against PSV this Saturday at the Woudestein stadium. Holman has already missed the club's first Amstel Cup match last Saturday against amateurs Capelle (won 3-1) and trainer Adrie Koster will also have to do without the youngster for Wednesday's Cup match against amateurs Kranenburg. "I only heard a couple of days ago that my papers are not yet in order and it's really irritating because I'm raring to get started."
Van Marwijk - "Fenerbahçe are favourites"

12 Aug 2002

Feyenoord's trainer Bert van Marwijk feels a little bit in the dark as to exactly how well prepared his team are for the Champions League qualifying duel against Fenerbahçe tomorrow. He's missed too many important players during the summer friendlies to be able to say he's found the right balance in the side as they prepare to play the Turkish giants. The worst of his injury worries are behind him with only Ebi Smolarek and Robin van Persie on the sick-list and unable to play. According to the coach Fenerbahçe are in serious mood, being totally focussed on doing well in the Champions League and winning the Turkish title, while they have also invested a lot of money in refurbishing their stadium. Wednesday night's match which reveal all!
Feyenoord sign Chong-gug Song

12 Aug 2002

Despite earlier denials to this reporter that there was a deal in the offing Feyenoord have reached agreement with South Korean international Chong-gug Song on a contract for 5 years. The deal is worth €4 million Euros and includes a clause giving his old club Busan Icons 10% of any fee Feynnord receive when they sell him on to another club. He's undergone a medical in Rotterdam today with the UEFA Cup winners and flies back to his homeland to sort out some last minute details before returning to complete the signing of his new deal. The 23 year-old defender has played 40 times for South Korea and was the only player to not miss a single minute of his national team's matches in the recent World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals of the tournament. He becomes the 3rd Korean player to sign for a European club, after Lee Eul-yong's move to Turkish side Trabzonspor and Cha Doo-ri's signing for German Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, (Cha has now been lent to Arminia Bielefeld for the next two seasons) and he is also the most expensive!
Pinilla on trial with Excelsior

12 Aug 2002

Mauricio Pinilla will be arriving in Holland today to spend 10 days training with Feyenoord's newly promoted satellite club Excelsior while also undergoing a medical examination. Pinilla is an 18 year-old striker currently under contract to Chilean side Universidad de Chile, where Feyenoord's recent signing Sebastián Pardo originated from. Technical director Rob Baan saw Pinilla in action for the first time last month at Universidad de Chile and the youngster's former teammate Pardo was able to bring him up to date on life in Holland and the situation at Excelsior. Baan and Pinilla reached agreement on the length and terms of his stay in Rotterdam yesterday while the two clubs still have to finalise the terms of any deal if his trial is successful.
Feyenoord sign Michel Fernandes Bastos

11 Aug 2002

Just one week before the new season kicks-off Feyenoord have signed the young Brazilian Michel Fernandes Bastos on a contract for 4 years. The 18 year-old left-back, who comes from Brazilian club Pelotas, will play for the Rotterdammers' newly promoted satellite side Excelsior next season.

Feyenoord win last test before C-L clash

10 Aug 2002

Feyenoord have won their last friendly before facing Turkish side Fenerbahçe, on either August 13th or 14th, in their Champions League qualifier. The Rotterdammers had no problems beating amateur champions AGOVV 0-8 in Apeldoorn. Star of the match was once again Belgian forward Thomas Buffel who's been having a great run of performances during the pre-season build-up. Determined to earn himself the role of shadow-striker he scored a hattrick in the space of 4 minutes towards the end of the match to make clear his 'goal'! New hire-signing Sebastián Pardo substituted for 'Japanese Wizard' Shinji Ono in the 2nd half and put on a good show, feeling right-at-home with the rest of the team! The match was a useful opportunity for trainer Bert van Marwijk to see if keeper Edwin Zoetebier, Patrick Paauwe and 'King of the Freekicks' Pierre van Hooijdonk were ready for the coming C-L confrontation. P-Air put away 2 goals, as did Anthony Lurling, and Bonaventure Kalou took the final score to 8.
Bert van Marwijk gets death-threats

10 Aug 2002

A nasty piece of news is that Feyenoord trainer Bert van Marwijk has received threats to himself and his family in recent days, a letter containing bullets being delivered to the Kuip last week, followed by a second letter. I'll spare you all the details of the ins-and-outs because I think the supposed reason for the threats (a so-called reaction by Ajax hard-core F-Side fans to the racist taunts which were vented by a small section of Feyenoord supporters during their recentday) is probably only a vehicle for some other 'sickie' to vent his/her own brand of poison or simply stir up trouble, much as arsonists do in their look-at-me-way!!!! The same thing happened to former Sparta trainer Frank Rijkaard toward the end of last season. There are some really, really sick people out there nowadays!
Carlos Alberto returns to Feyenoord

10 Aug 2002

Carlos Alberto will not be leaving Feyenoord for Swedish club Landskrona BoIS. After just one match and one training session the technical staff have concluded that he's not what they're looking for! Due to a string of injuries players they're really after a striker and Carlos will now be returning to the Kuip to see what other options may arise.
Loovens back - Kalou off to Ivory Coast

08 Aug 2002

Feyenoord's young defender Glenn Loovens has rejoined the squad for training after being out of action for a week with a hamstring problem. His teammate Bonaventure Kalou has been called up for international duty with the Ivory Coast squad who will be holding a special training session in the French town of Moissy between August 19th and 21st.
Sebastian Pardo joins Feyenoord squad

07 Aug 2002

Sebastian Pardo will continue to play for Feyeynoord for the time being - trainer Bert van Marwijk regards the left-half as a useful reinforcement for the squad and deems it unnecessary that the Chilean player gains more experience with satellite club Excelsior. "I think he's a really good player" said Van Marwijk. The 20 year-old has joined the Rotterdammers on a one-year loan deal from Universidad de Chile with an option to buy him. He'll be training with the squad this week before returning to Chile to await the necessary work and residence permits.
No truth in Feyenoord bid for Korean star!

06 Aug 2002

According to stories run by English SKY footballsite Planetfootball.com and the Dutch site Voetbalonline.nl. Feyenoord have made an official bid for South Korean international Son Chong-Gug. The midfielder attacted lots of interest from foreign clubs, especially English Premiership sides Tottenham and Southampton, after his stirring performances during the World Cup but his club Pusan Icons are claiming that Feyenoord are the only interested party so far who've made an official offer which has since been reportedly rejected!? FootballNL has been talking to Feyenoord 's press officer Mr. Fred Blankenmeijer today who's confirmed that this is yet another one of those rumours and there is no truth in the story. In the meantime the SKY site is linking the same player to PSV, due no doubt to the Hiddink connection, but we suspect that there is not truth in this one either! We will be contacting PSV's press officer Pedro Salazar later today, when he's back behind his desk, so that he can confirm or deny it! We'll keep you posted!
Feyenoord draw 2-2 against Tottenham

04 Aug 2002

Feyenoord were unable to claim victory in the Kuip this afternoon against English Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur, a slip-up in the closing stages of the match cost them the win. Ramon van Haren scored a fine 35 metre shot to celebrate a happy return to form after an injury-stricken first season at the Kuip. Veteran striker Teddy Sheringham put the Londoners ahead with a fine volley before Van Haren equalized just before half-time. After a period of hard work in the 2nd half Brett Emerton's pass found Bonaventure Kalou waiting to cleverly slip the ball in for the 2-1. In the dying minutes of the match Van Wonderen's back pass to Zoetebier was too short and Steffen Iversen profitted from the error to make the final score 2-2. Trainer Van Marwijk was nonetheless pleased that all his players are now fit and raring to go, only Van Persie has a little catching up to do before the young winger is fit to rejoin his teammates in action. Even he should be back for the Champions League qualifier against Fenerbahçe on August 14th.
Pardo puts on impressive performance

04 Aug 2002

Sebastián Pardo has left his calling card during Excelsior's friendly against VV Zuidland and showed the full range of his talents by scoring a hattrick and providing no less than 7 assists in the 11-0 win. Feyenoord's technical director Rob Baan was well pleased with the performnce of the Chilean midfielder who's on hire with an option to buy him this coming season. Baan and Bert van Marwijk will decide this week whether Pardo will play in the Kuip or be lent to Excelsior.
Van Persie rejoins Feyenoord squad

03 Aug 2002

Robin van Persie is sufficiently recovered from his back injury to rejoin the Feyenoord squad for training. The left-winger developed the injury at the end of a taxing first season with the Rotterdammers and had to be fitted with a special support in order to prevent any further damage being done to his lower lumbar vertebrae. It's unlikely, however, that he'll take part in Sunday's friendly against Tottenham Hotspur.
Successful return Van Hoijdonk and Paauwe

31 July 2002

At last there was some good news for Feyenoord trainer Bert van Marwijk after he watched the successful reappearance of Pierre van Hooijdonk and Patrick Paauwe in last night's friendly against amateurs Barendrecht. 'King of the Free-kicks' P-Air celebrated his return with two goals, including a spot-shot, in the 0-6 result. Paauwe has been out for weeks with first an ankle injury, followed by an achilles tendon injury, but managed to play an hour's football. P-Air had had an inflammation of a tendon in the groin area but played 80 minutes and looks on course for a full recovery in time to help out when Feyenoord face Turkish side Fenerbahçe in their preliminary round clash of the Champions League. New-boy-on-the-block Anthony Lurling broke the ice after a difficult atsrt for the Rotterdammers with a goal in the 35th minute, adding a 2nd four minutes later. Paul Bosvelt made it 0-3 soon after the break and P-Air's 2 goals in 5 minutes took the score to 0-5 before Tomasz Rzasa added a 6th.
P-Air back in action tonight!

30 July 2002

Pierre van Hooijdonk is set to play his first match for some time, albeit a friendly against amateurs Barendrecht tonight, after suffering from a groin problem which had been causing him pain when shooting! The latest echogram made of the injury revealed that everything was ok while P-Air himself is pain-free since last Saturday and could train yesterday without any problems. The Dutch international has not been able to play a match since the beginning of the Rotterdammers' pre-season preparations began on July 6th and missed out on the matches against Lekkerkerk, HSV, Kaiserslautern, Spijkenisse and Excelsior.
Feyenoord hire Sebastian Pardo

30 July 2002

Feyenoord have finally decided to add the technically gifted Chilean left-half defender Sebastian Pardo from Universidad de Chile on a loan deal for next season with an option to buy the player after technical director Rob Baan watched the youngster perform and was satisfied that he was worth snapping up. The 21 year-old international will firstly spend a few weeks training with the squad before the Rotterdammers decide whether he'll play out the season at the Kuip or be stalled with their newly promoted Ere Divisie satellite club Excelsior. Feyenoord have also decided not to add another Universidad de Chile player, 19 year-old striker Mauricio Pinilla to their squad.
Van Persie back within a week

30 July 2002

Feyenoord's Robin van Persie hopes to return for duty within a week after being out of action with a stress-fracture in one of his lumbar-vertebra that developed at the end of the last season. He's entered the last stage of his recuperation and is training with John Metgod. "I feel a lot better since last week", the wing-forward said on his personal page of the Rotterdamers' website, "I hope to be back with the squad within a week"!
Feyenoord narrowly beat Excelsior 4-3

27 July 2002

Feyenoord have narrowly beaten their newly promoted satellite club Excelsior 4-3 at the Woudestein stadium. Bonaventure Kalou scored twice, Thomas Buffel and Brett Emerton got one-a-piece while Boutahar got two for Excelsior and Lopes put away the third.
Paul Bosvelt extends deal at Feyenoord

27 July 2002

Paul Bosvelt has signed a new deal with Feyenoord which should seee him remain with the Kuip side till the summer of 2004. The 32 year-old midfielder, and team-captain, said that the club must be happy with his performance because of the fact that the negotiations went so smoothly and quickly. Bosvelt joined the Rotterdammers in 1997 and has played a total of 146 matches for them, scoring 31 goals. His professional career began with Go Ahead Eagles in 1989 where he played till he moved to Twente in 1994. He's scored a total of 79 Ere and Eerste Divisie goals in 381 matches played so far.
Feyenoord draw Fenerbahçe in C-L

26 July 2002

Feyenoord have drawn a tough opponent for their 3rd round qualifying match of the Champions League and will have to beat Turkish side Fenerbahçe in order to become one of the 32 clubs who will continue into the autumn's first group matches. Ajax and PSV are luckier and have already qualified for the later stages of the tournament. The home match in the Rotterdam Kuip takes place on August 13th or 14th with the return on Friday August 30th, 3 days after Feyenoord turn out to play Real Madrid in the European Super Cup! Trainer Bert van Marwijk says that they will certainly not make the mistake they made two years ago when they underestimated the opposition put up by Austrian side Sturm Graz who knocked them out in the qualifying round.  Turkish football is on the up after Turkey's successful run in the World Cup and Feyenoord witnessed how Fenerbahçe demolished Kaiserslautern 6-2 in the recent Alpine Tournamnent in Austria. The no.2 of the Turkish league have some impressive players in their lineup, including goalie Rüstü Reçber, midfielders Haim Revivo and Ariel Ortega plus Croatian forward Milan Rapaic.
Jan de Visser hangs up his boots

26 July 2002

Jan de Visser has decided to hang up his boots. The 34 year-old former AZ and Heerenveen midfielder was told at the beginning of the year that his contract at the Kuip would not be renewed  but the midfielder could understand the club's position. Nonetheless, he wanted to see if he could find a way to continue for another year or two but all attempts to find a new club failed. De Visser made his debut for AZ in the 2-2 against DS'79 on December 3rd 1988 and has gone on to make a total of 397 professional appearances, scoring 27 goals, during 3 seasons with the Alkmaarders, 8 with Heerenveen and 3 with Feyenoord.
Patrick Paauwe back in 2 - 3 weeks

26 July 2002

Patrick Paauwe's injury is not as serious as feared and the Feyenoord player expects to be back in training in two weeks time. A scan at Rotterdam hospital 'Academisch Ziekenhuis Dijkzicht' revealed that the 26 year-old central-defender's problem is treatable with anti- inflammatory drugs. He probably will not be back in time for Feyenoord'sng qualifying match of the Champions League on August 13th but it's still a relief that the ankle/achilles injury is not any worse than it is.
Liverpool target Brett Emerton

25 July 2002

According to reports in the English media Liverpool are targeting Feyenoord's Brett Emerton after the planned transfer of Leeds United's Lee Bowyer fell through in a disagreement over his salary. Leeds have themselves been linked with the Australian international for some time with firstly David O'Leary and now his replacement Terry Venables desirous to add Emerton to the squad for next season. Liverpool are said to be offering €12.5 million Euros as they search for a quick replacement for planned 'transferee', Blackburn Rovers' Irish international Damien Duff after negotiations ended when manager Gérard Houllier decided that the asking price of €31 million Euros was just too much. 'The Reds' may be ready to pounce for Emerton now that Bowyer's failed transfer leaves Leeds without the necessary cash to snap up the Feyenoord man. The many, many millions they received from Manchester United for star-defender Rio Ferdinand (currently most-expensive defender in the world) is mainly being used to pay off the club's not unconsiderable debts.
Pauuwe to have ankle scanned

25 July 2002

Patrick Paauwe is paying a visit to hospital today to have his left-ankle scanned. The 26 year-old has been complaining of pain in his achilles-tendon for some time now and the problem forced him to stop training yesterday. According to Feyenoord's medical staff the problem is a result of an old injury.

Pierre van Hooijdonk resumes training

24 July 2002

Pierre van Hooijdonk has resumed training at the Kuip today after he left the Feyenoord's training camp in Austrian Innsbruck last week to have his groin injury scanned in Holland. The scan, carried out in Dijkzigt hospital, revealed an inflamed tendon as the cause of his discomfort which was then treated with an injection and, after a few days rest, P-Air is now able to resume his pre-season preparations.

Brett Emerton waits for Leeds call

20 July 2002

Feyenoord's Australian international Brett Emerton is waiting patiently to see whether or not he's finally going to get a call from Leeds United. During his first season with the Rotterdammers there were constantly rumours circulating linking him to the
Feyenoord lose to Kaiserslautern 1-0

19 July 2002

Feyenoord have lost the battle for 3rd place in the Austrian Alpine tournament in Innsbruck after a 1-0 defeat by 1.FC Kaiserslautern. Anthony Lurling was sent off in injury time after a 'charge' which sparked of a confrontation between several players. Thomas Buffel impressed once again and Bonaventure Kalou made up for being less than fit on his return from holiday by putting on a good show as substitute.
Feyenoord have not signed Pardo!

18 July 2002

Contrary to a report you may or may not have seen on the English football site Optasoccer.com, which we were foolish enough to believe was a reliable piece of reporting, Feyenoord have not signed Chilean talent on a loan deal for next season. The Rotterdammers' press officer Mr. Blankenmeijer has confirmed that although the club is interested in the talented midfielder there is no question of a contract, for the time being at least. To put an end to another piece of disinformation Mauricio Aros is not, repeat not, holding talks with the Kuip side in conncetion with a new deal for the coming season
Feyenoord lose to Hamburger SV

18 July 2002

Feyenoord will be competing for 3rd place in the Alpine tournament taking place in Austria after a goalless draw against Bundesliga side Hamburger SV was eventually decided 3-4 on penalties in favour of the German team. Yet another case of 'Dutch disease' (or the inability to put away spot-shots) saw Bosvelt, Van Wonderen and Rzasa all missing while Elmander, Lurling and Emerton all found the back of the net.
Van Hooijdonk has inflamed tendon

18 July 2002

'King of the Freekicks' Pierre van Hooijdonk will not be rejoining Feyenoord's training camp in Austria after an MRI-scan revealed that the striker has developed an inflamed tendon which was the cause of the pain he's been experiencing in the groin area. The Dutch international has been treated with an injection to reduce the inflammation and will be resting for 3 days. If the treatment works he'll be able to resume training next Monday.
Shinji Ono rejoins Feyenoord

17 July 2002

"Japanese Wizard" Shinji Ono has rejoined Feyenoord's squad in Austria after returning from Japan where he's been recovering from an appendix operation. He's also richer for his World Cup experience and will be even more valuable to the Rotterdammers prepare for next season. "I've only a small scar to remind me of the surgery and I feel fine", he said. He's back in training but will not be fielded for the Alpine tournament match against Hamburger SV tomorrow
Van Hooijdonk to have bone-scan

17 July 2002

Pierre van Hooijdonk is returning early from Feyenoord's training camp in Austria to go into hospital for a bone scan. The striker has been complaining of pain in the groin area for some time now and hopefully the scan will reveal the cause of the problem which could be an inflammation. The striker developed the injury as a result of last season's punishing schedule but had hoped that 7 weeks holiday would be sufficient for it to clear up.
Feyenoord C-L opponent known on July 26th

17 July 2002

Feyenoord will know who their Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round opponent will be when the UEFA hold the draw on July 26 in the Swiss town of Nyon. The home matches will take place on August 13th and 14th with the returns on August 27th and 28th. Feyenoord is one of 18 clubs assured of a place in the 3rd Qualifying Round along with Bayern München, Manchester United, FC Barcelona, Internazionale, AC Milan, Lokomotiv Moskou, AEK Athene, Rosenborg BK, Newcastle United, Sturm Graz, Celtic, Sporting CP, AJ Auxerre, Slovan Liberec, Shakhtar Donetsk, RC Genk and Fenerbahçe.
Sebastián Pardo on his way to Feyenoord

16 July 2002

Feyenoord have completed the loan-signing of Chilean talent Sebastián Pardo. The midfielder has been hired for a year, with an option to buy, from Universidad de Chile and the club's president René Orozco has confirmed that the deal has been done. The transfer can still run into problems if the 20 year-old, who made such a good impression during the South American championships for Under 20s, fails to obtain a work permit. His fellow countryman Mauricio Aros, who also came from the same club in Chile, was sent home by Feyenoord at the end of last season but he might still be joined at the Kuip by the young forward Mauricio Pinilla who the Rotterdammers are also targeting.
Feyenoord have pre-season headache!

16 July 2002

Feyenoord have plenty of things to worry about as they prepare for the coming season. To begin with they have just received a hefty UEFA fine of €17,000 Euros as a punishment for fans who set off dangerous fireworks during the UEFA Cup Final against Borussia Dortmund. The Rotterdammers also find themselves with far too many players on the injured list - assistant trainer Mario Been had to join the morning training session yesterday as a player in order to make up the numbers! The club's injury problems are so severe that 3rd choice goalie, Carlo L'Ami (35), was fielded in the friendly against amateurs Lekkerkerk. Of the 24 players coach Bert van Marwijk took to the training camp in Austria only 15 are fit! Keepers Edwin Zoetebier and Patrick Lodewijks are the least of his worries and rejoined the squad yesterday but Van Haaren, Van Hooijdonk, Van Persie, Elmander, Paauwe, Loovens and Kalou all had to train separately.
Feyenoord to sign Chilean talent?

15 July 2002

Feyenoord are close to signing Chilean talent Sebastián Pardo. The 21 year-old midfielder turns out for Universidad de Chile and made a good impression during the South American championships for Under 20s. Technical manager Rob Baan is quoted as being very enthousiastic about the player claiming, "If he works hard and develops his physical strength we might have the next Rivaldo in 3 years time!" A bold claim indeed!
Van Marwijk angry with Kalou

13 July 2002

Feyenoord trainer Bert van Marwijk is angry with his Cameroon striker Bonaventure Kalou. According to Van Marwijk it was obvious during the commencement of the pre-season preparations that Kalou had not been keeping fit during his holiday and as a result has picked up a groin strain in training. One piece of good news is that defender Ramon van Haren is fit enough for the first time in months to rejoin the squad.
Ono rejoins Feyenoord on July 14th

08 July 2002

Feyenoord's 'Japanese Wizard' Shinji Ono will be rejoining the squad later than expected due to the midfielder's need to recuperate from the appendix operation he underwent in Japan. On his arrival in Holland it was clear that Ono not only needed more time to recover from the surgery but was also over-tired. Trainer Bert van Marwijk decided it was better to get a late-but-fit Ono back for the pre-season preparations rather than an Ono suffering from 'burn-out'. The Japanese international will now rejoin the squad on July 14th.
Feyenoord have first training session

06 July 2002

6000 plus spectators turned out to watch Feyenoord's first training of their pre-season preparations. Bert van Marwijk's squad is far from being complete with Pierre van Hooijdonk, Robin van Persie and Ebi Smolarek all injured, Leonardo on duty with Brazil's Under 23s while Shinji Ono and Tomasz Rzasa are recovering from their World Cup exertions. Even goalie Edwin Zoetebier is unable to train for the 100%, hindered as he still is by a knee injury. Jon Dahl Tomasson is the only 1st team player to have left (signed for AC Milan) while there are additions in the shape of Anthony Lurling, keeper Patrick Lodewijks and youth players Brian Pinas, Thomas Buffel and Ferne Snoyl. On Sunday July 14th Feyenoord leave for Austria where they take part in the FC Tirol tournament involving Fenerbahce, HSV and Kaiserslautern.

Feyenoord remain interested in Farnerud

05 July 2002

Feyenoord have confirmed that they are still tracking Landskrona player Alexander Farnerud. The youngster scored a spectacular goal in a recent 2-1 win against Hammarby, weaving past 6 opponents to lob over the head of keeper Ante Covic. The 18 year-old is valued at €3,09 million Euros but Feyenoord are not planning to launch a bid for the striker just yet and Farnerud has said he wants to stay in Sweden for at least another year.
Leonardo gets Brazil debut call-up

04 July 2002

Feyenoord's Brazilian winger Leonardo has been called up for Brazil's Under 23 squad. The 19 year-old will be getting his first chance to play for his country in two friendlies against Haďti and one against Panama. It means he'll join Feyenoord's squad for their pre-season preparations on July 20th. Leonardo de Vitor Santiago was lured to 'glamorous' Rotterdam as a twelve-year-old from the slums of Rio de Janeiro. The diminutive dibbler was 'untouchable' in the club's youth teams and at the age of 17 had become the squad's absolute top-star when he was promoted to the 1st team squad. He's had a hard time with the 'grown-ups' and never been popular with his teammates, being unwilling to listen to the advice of far more experienced players around him. Further off-pitch problems with work permits, an agent who ran a snackbar(!!??) and the 'passport-affair' plus the fact that he regularly returned late from visits to Brazil have not furthered his cause. To make things worse his performances on-pitch have suffered and he's failed to live up to those early signs of greatness. Last season Feyenoord even considered selling/hiring him but he returned from disgrace towards the end of the season with a series of strong performances which have now been rewarded with the invitation to play for Brazil and wear that magical canary-yellow shirt!
Samardzic returns to Heerenveen

01 July 2002

Radoslav Samardzic is returning to the Abe Lenstra stadium next season to play for Heerenveen. The 32 year-old Yugoslavian has signed a deal for one year with the Frieslanders for whom he previously played between 1997 and 1999. He was under contract with Feyenoord but lost his place in the squad at the Kuip and, since March, has been keeping fit with Eerste Divisie side ADO Den Haag. Samardzic kicked-off his career in Holland at FC Volendam in 1995, moving on two years later to Heerenveen before leaving for Feyenoord after another two years. He failed to make an impression at the Kuip and never got further than reserve team appearances plus a spell on loan to RKC Waalwijk in 2001.
Van Hooijdonk suffering from hip-problem

27 Jun 2002

Pierre van Hooijdonk looks likely to start the preparations for next season a little later than his teammates due to a hip problem that bothered him at the end of last season. The 32 year-old top-scorer underwent a hospital examination yesterday and will return for an MRI-scan next week in oreder to establish exactly how serious the injury is.
RBC sign second young Feyenoorder

26 Jun 2002

Newly promoted RBC Roosendaal have added another young Feyenoorder in 19 year-old Ferdi Claessen who's signed a contract for a year. Claessen came up through Feyenoord's youth academy and played for Excelsior's youth team during the last two seasons. He's a midfielder who plays equally well in a central position as on the left flank. Between the age of 14 and 18 he played for Holland's youth teams and is the 2nd Feyenoord player to join the Roosendaalers after the earlier signing of goalie Erwin Friebel.
Feyenoord chase 3rd Japanese player

24 Jun 2002

Feyenoord have truly been bitten by the 'Japanese bug' after the successfull 'integration' of Shinji Ono in Rotterdam. They are now chasing defender Toshihiro Hattori after already showing their interest in adding Junichi Inamoto to the squad. The Rotterdammers want to sign the 28 year-old on a hire contract from his current club Júbilo Iwata. Hattori has played 39 internationals for Japan, scoring twice.
Shinji Ono to have appendix removed

21 Jun 2002

Feyenoord's Japanese international Shinji Ono is going into hospital for an operation to have his appendix removed. He'll have the surgery in Tokio before flying back to Europe for the Rotterdamers' training camp in Austria. Ono had been suffering from abdominal pains prior to the start of the World Cup but, after two days in hospital, decided to take part in Japan's World Cup games.
Feyenoord target Inamoto

21 Jun 2002

Japanese midfielder Junichi Inamoto is being targeted by Feyenoord after earlier interest from PSV. The Rotterdammers have been following the player, who scored World Cup goals against Belgium and Russia, for more than a year now but Inamoto chose to sign for Arsenal where he spent most of last season on the bench. Now that he's transfer-free Inamoto could well choose to go to Feyenoord as his friend Shinji Ono, who is already making a name for himself at the Kuip, has advised him to sign with the Rotterdammers.
Feyenoord sign Australian duo

21 Jun 2002

Feyenoord have signed two 18 year-old Australian players in Brett Holman and Michael Brown. Both come from Paramatta Power, Brett Emerton's former club, and Holman has signed for 5 years while Brown has signed for 2 years. The duo have been on trial with the Rotterdammers and took part in the international youth tournament which was held at the Kuip. It's likely they will be stalled at newly promoted satellite club Excelsior, if they successfully pass the obligatory medical examination, which means they could get to play Ere Divisie football next season.
Feyenoord accused of tax evasion

18 Jun 2002

The Dutch public prosecutor has issued a summons to Feyenoord and its chairman Jorien van den Herik to appear in court to answer charges of tax evasion. The court case is the result of an investigation by tax-fraud investigators FIOD (Fiscale Inlichtingen- en Opsporingsdienst). Apparently the Rotterdammers failed to pay sufficient tax for new players when they were transferred to the Kuip. Feyenoord manager Jan D. Swart has been quoted as saying it's a complete surprise that the club is being dragged into court to fight a case which started 4 years ago when the club were originally accused. It's especially surprising when there has been so much discussion over the last few years concerning the way in which the actual amount of tax to be paid, when a player is transferred or signs a new contract, is actually calculated.
Anderlecht want Elmander?

18 Jun 2002

Top Belgian side Anderlecht are reported to have approached Feyenoord for their Swedish forward Johan Elmander, although the Belgian media have indicated that there's little chance of him actually moving to Belgium as the asking price is too high. Elmander sees little action with Feyenoord and there are several other clubs who have made enquiries about hiring him but the Rotterdammers are not enthousiastic to let him go. Elmander is currently on holiday and will have to decide for himself when he returns whether or not he wants to risk a spell on loan to another club.
End of the road for Van Gobbel

15 Jun 2002

It looks as if Ulrich van Gobbel will be hanging up his boots this summer as a result of a chronic hip injury which has kept him out of action for the latter half of last season with Feyenoord. The 31 year-old former Willem II, Galatasaray and Southampton defender is being set up with an appointment to see a specialist after a fruitless trip to his homeland Surinam in South America for 'traditional' treatment. Feyenoord want to know a.s.a.p. if the veteran, who's been with the club for the last 12 seasons, is going to be fit to play next season.
Van Persie to be fitted with plaster-corset

13 Jun 2002

Robin van Persie's back injury has necessitated him being fitted with a special corset that he'll have to wear for 3 months. The winger has been suffering from a considerable amount of pain for some months now but it had been hoped that a month's rest would be enough of a cure for his problem. It looks as if he'll be now out of action for 3 months.
Smolarek gets 2 European match ban

08 Jun 2002

Ebi Smolarek will have to sit out the first two European matches that Feyenoord play next season after receiving a UEFA ban. The Polish international failed a doping test after the UEFA Cup semi-final match against PSV on March 21st when an 'illegal' amount of cannabinol was detected in his urine. Smolarek has been dealt with leniently due to the fact that UEFA accepted he hadn't smoked a joint, or passively inhaled someone else's cannabis smoke, as the levels of cannabinol were simply too low for that to be the case.
Feyenoord let Mauricio Aros go

07 Jun 2002

Feyenoord are not going to make use of the option to extend Mauricio Aros' contract. The 26 year-old Chilean defender joined the Rotterdammers during the winter break on a deal for 6 months, primarily as a replacement for the injured Ramon van Haaren and Pieter Collen, but lost the battle for a place in the squad to Tomasz Rasza. Aros would prefer to stay in Europe but so far there have been no offers from other clubs.
Van Persie still suffering from back injury

02 Jun 2002

Feyenoord's Robin van Persie continues to be troubled by the back injury the left-winger picked up in the latter stages of his debut season for the Rotterdammers. The youngster has been diagnosed as suffering from a lower-back strain which necessitates at least a month's rest. Van Persie will miss the start of the team's pre-season preparations on Saturday July 6th and, in the worst case scenario, he could miss the first ten weeks of the new season!
UEFA decide Smolarek didn't smoke joint

29 May 2002

A special UEFA commission has decided that Feyenoord's Ebi Smolarek, who earlier last season failed a drug-test after the UEFA Cup duel against PSV , is innocent of smoking any cannabis. UEFA is in agreement with Smolarek's claim that he ingested the cannabinol found in his blood via certain health food products. Feyenoord expects that any punishment handed out by UEFA's disciplinary committee on June 10th will be of a mild nature.
Lodewijks and Lurling signs Feyenoord deals

29 May 2002

PSV's Patrick Lodewijks and Heerenveen's Anthony Lurling put pen to paper and signed their contracts with Feyenoord yesterday. Goalkeeper Lodewijks had already reached a gentleman's agreement with the Rotterdammers 2 weeks ago and, now that he's passed the obligatory medical, has signed a deal for two seasons while Lurling has signed a deal for 4 years.
Lurling to sign for Feyenoord

18 May 2002

Feyenoord have agreed terms with Heerenveen concerning the fee for the transfer of Anthony Lurling. If the 25 year-old forward agrees to the deal he'll sign a contract for 4 years.  Lurling has been with Heerenveen since 1999 when he arrived from Den Bosch. Lurling recently told Dutch provincial newspaper the "Brabants Dagblad" that it's always been his dream to play for the Rotterdammers.
Houllier wants Emerton

17 May 2002

Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has confirmed his interest in Feyenoord's Australian international Brett Emerton. Houllier has been to watch Emerton play in the UEFA Cup semi-final and is attracted by his talent and flexibility. He started the season as a right winger but has ended it in a defensive role which could prove extremely attractive for the English Premiership side. Feyenoord are believed to be willing to let him go for a large fee and Liverpool could be prepared t
Feyenoord face Real Madrid in Supercup

16 May 2002

UEFA Cup winners Feyenoord will play Champions League winners Real Madrid, who beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in last night's final, on August 30th in Monaco as they battle for the European Supercup.
Bosvelt gets Oranje callup

16 May 2002

Paul Bosvelt has received a call from Oranje coach Dick Advocaat to join the squad for the coming friendly against the United States in Boston on Sunday. He's replacing Patrick Kluivert who's dropped out with a knee injury and his inclusion ends the rift between the two men that came into existence when the Feyenoorder, along with teammate Pierre van Hooijdonk, called off for March's friendly against Spain.
Smolarek needs operation

11 May 2002

Feyenoord's Polish forward Ebi Smolarek is going to need an operation to repair his damaged knee. An injury problem affecting the same knee in March cost him a place in the Polish squad and a chance to play in the World Cup this summer. The latest injury occurred during training and he will need a visit to the operating table to have the problem corrected. It's the latest blow for the striker who also faces disciplinary action by UEFA after it was revealed earlier this week that he failed a doping test where cannabinol was detected in a urine sample
Lodewijks signs for Feyenoord

10 May 2002

Patrick Lodewijks has signed a 2-year contract to be Feyenoord's new reserve goalie. The 34 year-old hadbe extended and he  succeeds AZ's Henk Timmer who was Edwin Zoetebier's stand-in during last season. Although Feyenoord wanted to keep Timmer they've had to let him go because the Alkmaarders asked too much money for him while Lodewijks is transfer-free.
Shinji Ono makes footballing history

09 May 2002

Shinji Ono made footballing history yesterday, becoming the first Japanese player to collect a UEFA Cup winner's medal. Ono made a significant contribution to Feyenoord's crucial 3rd goal by beating Borussia's offside trap and delivering a pass that enabled Danish international Jon Dahl Tomasson to score. After the match Ono told reporters "Van Hooijdonk was in an offside position, but Tomasson came flying out of the second line for me. I wanted to remain on the pitch until the end but it's okay because we won the cup. It's the greatest feeling."

Feyenoord win UEFA Cup 3-2 v Dortmund

08 May 2002

Feyenoord played their hearts out tonight in a match which took place in the shadow cast by the assassination of Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn on Tuesday. Many were worried that the tragic death of the controversial figure, who had sent shock waves through the Dutch political landscape and beyond, would have a detrimental effect on the team. Their coolness and discipline was rewarded with the UEFA Cup trophy to put in their cabinet for the first time in 28 years! "Man of the Match" was Pierre van Hooijdonk, scoring two first half-goals, the first a penalty for a foul on Tomasson, for which Kohler was dismissed in the 31st. The 2nd was one of his freekick specials, after Van Persie was tripped by Amoroso in the 39th, and it left the goalie without a chance! It made P-Air UEFA Cup top-scorer as well as giving his team a well deserved 2-0 lead to take into the dressing room. The 2nd half saw a rejuvenated Borussia side and they were awarded an early penalty for a 'kamikaze' stunt by Paauwe in the box. Amoroso put away the spot-shot - no problem, 2-1. Could Feyenoord hold out till the whistle? Only three minutes later they had an immediate reply and Tomasson got his 5th UEFA goal, coolly slotting away the shot, 3-1. The Bundesliga champions really fought hard to clamber back and Koller blasted in a shot for them from 20 metres for the 3-2. Feyenoord hung on till the bittersweet end, despite many worrying moments, to crown their season with the UEFA Cup!!
Feyenoord not scared of Dortmund

08 May 2002

Feyenoord's coach Bert van Marwijk has been talking of his respect for UEFA Cup finalists Dortmund while making clear that neither he, nor his team, are worried about the fact that the German side are currently favourites to win the match. The Rotterdammers have already proven their ability to take out 'tougher' opposition in beating Glasgow Rangers and Internazionale to reach the final. "Dortmund have good players but so do we!", he said, "they are a fine team, mixing typical German-style football with South American temperament and creativity".
Possible Feyenoord lineup: Edwin Zoetebier; Christian Gyan, Kees van Wonderen, Patrick Paauwe, Tomasz Rzasa; Bonaventure Kalou, Paul Bosvelt, Shinji Ono, Robin van Persie; Jon Dahl Tomasson, Pierre van Hooijdonk.
Possible Borussia Dortmund lineup: Jens Lehmann; Jörg Heinrich, Stefan Reuter, Christian Wörns, Dedé; Lars Ricken, Sunday Oliseh, Tomáš Rosický, Otto Addo; Márcio Amoroso, Jan Koller.
Van Persie and Paauwe fit for UEFA Final

07 May 2002

Feyenoord's young talent Robin van Persie and central defender Patrick Paauwe have rejoined the squad for training after a few days rest due to, respectively, an ankle and a back problem. Coach Bert van Marwijk expects that both will be able to play in the UEFA Cup Final against Borussia Dortmund in the Kuip tomorrow.
Smolarek fails UEFA dope test

06 May 2002

Feyenoord's Ebi Smolarek has been named as the Dutch player who failed the dope test as announced yesterday in the press. UEFA have confirmed that the player failed a test after the UEFA Cup clash with PSV on March 21st. A tiny amount of Cannabinol was found in his blood but the Polish winger has denied smoking or using cannabis and Feyenoord manager Jan D. Swart is convinced of the player's innocence. Cannabinol is a substance that can also be found in some health store chocolate bars and Feyenoord are planning to back their player in his appeal against whatever punishment UEFA decides to hand out. Cannabis is no longer to be found on the Dutch FA's list of banned substances but is still included in UEFA's list.
Willem II and Feyenoord in goalless draw

05 May 2002

Willem II lineup: De Vlieger, Jaliens, Mariana, Van Nieuwstadt, J. Mathijsen, Landzaat, Sektioui, D. Mathijssen, Caluwé, Bombarda, Shoukov.

Feyenoord lineup: Timmer, Gyan, De Haan, Sprockel, Rzasa, Emerton, Bosvelt, Korneev, Dos Santos, Elmander, Leonardo.

Henk Timmer made his last appearance for Feyenoord this afternoon - the Rotterdammers were unwilling to meet the €700,000 Euro price tag that AZ have been asking for him and the reserve keeper will be returning to Alkmaar. Pierre van Hooijdoink, Tomasson, Ono and Van Persie were all rested for this last match of the season as they will need all their strength and fitness for Wednesday's UEFA Cup clash with Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund. The game itself ended in a goalless draw.

Van Hooijdonk's appeal successful

03 May 2002

Pierre van Hooijdonk's appeal against the red card he picked up in the match against De Graafschap on April 25th has been successful. The Dutch international was awarded the card for supposedly elbowing his opponent René Bot who, immediately after the match, sprang to P-Air's defence, explaining that it was an unintentional 'blow'.
Emerton misses UEFA Cup Final

02 May 2002

Feyenoord's Australian international Brett Emerton will miss the UEFA Cup Final against Borussia Dortmund after his appeal against a one match ban was rejected by UEFA. The midfielder was handed out a yellow card by referee Antonio Jesús Lopez Nieto for so-called time wasting in the semi-final match against Inter Milan and will be thoroughly disappointed at not taking part in the Rotterdammers' most important match of the season.
Feyenoord UEFA celebrations on Thursday

02 May 2002

If Feyenoord win the UEFA Cup Final against Borussia Dortmund, next Wednesday May 8th, they will hold their official celebrations on the following day, May 9th (Ascension Day), at Rotterdam's Coolsingel, 'kickoff' 14:00. The party has been arranged in the afternoon to help avoid the rioting which marred previous celebrations in 1999 and 1993. A massive police force will be available to prevent crowd problems, Feyenoord and Dortmund supporters will be strictly segregated, there will be no alcohol on sale and several shopping streets will be closed to the public!
Tomasson signs for AC Milan?

01 May 2002

Feyenoord's Jon Dahl Tomasson is closing to signing a 4 year contract to play for AC Milan - only contractual formalities and the obligatory medical remain to be completed. The striker has declared to the Italian media that he's enthusiastic about the possibility of playing for Milan, alongside fellow Danes Martin Laursen and Thomas Helveg who convinced him that it was the right move to make. The 25 year-old has been in the fortunate position of being transfer-free and could choose between several major clubs who were interested in signing him. Barcelona were earlier tipped to snap him up but they took too long to make their minds up and pay the price by seeing him make the move to the Serie A!! Tomasson arrived in Holland from Křge BK in 1994 to play for Heerenveen, moving on to English Premiership side Newcastle United in 1997. He failed to make his mark on Tyneside and, a year later, was on his way to Rotterdam.  In the Kuip he developed into a valued member of the team who took time to score his goals but whose hard working attitude made him very popular with the fans.
Leeds offer €13 million Euros for Emerton

30 Apr 2002

Leeds United, who were once again in Holland last weekend to view Brett Emerton's performance, have finally made an official offer for the midfielder. The English Premiership club were very impressed with Emerton's performance during Feyenoord's 3-2 win against Heerenveen last weekend and have offered €13 million Euros for the Australian international. Whether they will succeed in signing him still remains to be seen as Feyenoord are actually asking €19.4 million!!
