il Kim receives permit & mocks media |
10 Feb 2003
|
|
Feyenoord's new Korean talent Nam-il Kim
has finally received his work permit and has now only to wait for his visa
which is expected to arrive later this week- making him eligible to play professional
football in Holland. It is expected that Kim will arrive next Monday
in Holland and will immediately join Feyenoord's sister club Excelsior where
he will remain for the rest of the season. Kim will undoubtedly be able to
secure a first team place at Excelsior and thus have more chance of earning
a move to Feyenoord in the summer if he can conjure up his talents and
impress van Marwijk. Nam-il Kim stated that he was very glad to get the
chance to prove his abilities at Ere Divisie club Excelsior and that media
reports in Korea suggesting otherwise were totally untrue.

kick Ajax 2 out of Dutch FA Cup |
06
Feb 2003
|
|
Excelsior had no trouble whatsoever in jolting Ajax's reserve
team out of the Dutch FA Cup even though the 4-2 score would suggest a
closer game. Áfter Akachar hadd the score for Ajax in the 5th
minute Excelsior dominated the rest of the match. In the 18th Hampdaoui
equalized for Excelsior and in 38th minute Lopes put the half-time 2-1
score-line on the board. In the 68th minute Lopes was once again
on target completing his brace for the 3-1.. Although Kujala was able to
reduce the gap to one goal in the 73rd minute Excelsior's Holm netted 5
minutes later for the final 4-2.

|
Feyenoord how are currently
testing Korean Kim Nam-il have sent him to their satellite club
Excelsior for further trials according to Feyenoords website. Although the
players has made an impression on Feyenoord's russian striker, Igor
Korneev , Feyenoord would prefer to stall the Korean midfielder with
Excelsior for a year were he can be molded.
Kim, who saw a contract with Premier League side West Ham fall through due
to communication problems, believes he has more chance in Holland to
succeed than elsewhere, saying: "People in Holland do more to try and
understand you and make you feel at home." |

lose to Excelsior 1 - 2 |
18 Dec 2002
|
|
Although Vitessed the
score in the 19th minute of the match, via their best player of the night Gert
Claessens, they never really looked as if they would be able to beat
the visitors. It was, therefore, no surprise when Brian Pinas equalized in the
21st minute with a low hard shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Excelsior continued to dominate and in the 41st minute took the lead after
Said Boutahar smashed one into the back of the net. Although Excelsior
continued their domination in the 2nd act the score remained unchanged. In
the 81st minute referee Braamhaar was forced to hold the game up for 10
minutes after Vitesse fans had hurled metal lighters onto the pitch, nearly
hitting the Excelsior goalkeeper.

| Excelsior
draw 2-2 with Twente |
14 Dec 2002
|
Excelsior
lineup: Zbigniew Malkowski, Danny Buijs, Civard Sprockel, Steve Olfers,
Michel Fernandes Bastos (87. Leo Koswal), Gil Swerts, Saïd Boutahar,
Patrick Mtiliga, Mounir El Hamdaoui (78. Brett Holman), Cecilio Lopes, Brian
Pinas.
FC
Twente lineup: Sander Boschker, Faouzi el-Brazi, Spira Grujic,
Patrick Pothuizen, Jeroen Heubach, Simon Cziommer, Rahim Ouédraego, Kurt
van de Paar (82. Jurgen Cavens), Sjaak Polak, Ellery Cairo, Collins John
(74. Houwing, 90. Zomer)
Jurgen Cavens first ball contact
could have been the match-winner for Twente but Excelsior denied them the
points with a last minute equalizer. On a difficult pitch both teams tried
to string some nice football together and Tukker Ellery Cairod the
score against his former club, where he played 53 matches between 1999 and
his move to Enschede. Said Boutahar got the equalizer before Cavens nosed
the visitors ahead again only for Cairo to be sent off for a headbutt.
Finally, Steve Olfers drew Excelsior level, pouncing on Jeroen Heubach's
sloppy defending.

| RBC
and Excelsior draw 1-1 |
06 Dec 2002
|
|
RBC
lineup: Maikel Aerts, Edwin de Graaf, David Nascimento, Azubike Oliseh,
Melvin Fleur, Eric Hellemons, Pascal Heije, Tininho, Nordin Wooter (10. Ebou
Sillah), Geert den Ouden (61. Peter Maseland), Henk Vos.

Olfers, Civard Sprockel, Michel Fernandes, Bastos, Gill Swerts, Saïd
Boutahar, Patrick Mtiliga, Dries Boussatta (36. Leo Koswal), Cecilio Lopes,
Brian Pinas.
Excelsior stormed out of the
blocks tonight in Roosendaal and pinned the home team back in their own
half. RBC had problems coping with the Rotterdammers' onslaught and were
sloppy on the ball, which didn't help them to get to grips with the flow of
play. The visitors should have done more with their advantage but Cecilio
Lopes, Brian Pinas and Saïd Boutahar were all less-than-sharp tonight
while RBC-keeper Maikel Aerts was well-on-form and dealt smartly with their
attempts at goal. The home team began to be encouraged by their opponents'
lack of success and Ebou Sillah hit the bar but it was Henk Vos who actually
put them
ahead close to the break. The 2nd act was more entertaining and Excelsior
trainer Adrie Koster's decision to bring on some extra firepower in the
shape of Mounir el Hamdaoui bore fruit when Brian Pinas' through ball found
Saïd Boutahar waiting to seal his fine performance tonight with the
equalizer in the 66th. Excelsior had the chances to snatch the points but a
cat-like save by the excellent Aerts kept the score level till the
whistle.

|
|
Excelsior will miss midfielder
Michel Breuer for the next 4 - 6 weeks after it was revealed that he's
picked up a knee injury in the 0-3 defeat by Willem II at the weekend.
"I'm relieved that the injury is not more serious than it is and I'll
be having x-rays or a scan made shortly to be absolutely certain of the
current diagnosis. Fortunately we're close to the winter-stop which gives me
the chance to get fit in time for the resumption of the season at the end of
January," he told local paper 'Rotterdams Dagblad'.

Mika Väyrynen who scored both goals. After a toughng half for the

Mtiliga gets 5 match ban |
10 Oct 2002
|
|
The Dutch FA (KNVB) have handed
out Excelsior's Patrick Mtiliga a ban for 5 matches for his red card offence
in the match against Roda. The 21 year-old Danish midfielder was sent off
for kicking out at another player in the 2-3 win. The fact that he's already
picked up 3 red cards since arriving in Rotterdam in the summer of 1999 has
contributed to the 'heavy sentence'.

Roda lineup: Kujovic

Soetaers, Cristiano, Anastasio.
Excelsior
lineup: Malkowski - Swerts, Olfers, Sprockel, Breuer - Bastos, Boutahar,
Mtiliga - Lopes, Koswal, Pinas.
A week after giving RKC an
unwelcome defeat at the Mandemakers stadium, Excelsior continue their run of
successes with a 2-3 away win against Roda for whom it's the 1st home defeat
of the season. Adri Koster fielded a defensive formation in the
Parkstad Limburg Stadion and was content to leave one or two strikers up
front and let Roda come at them. It worked for a while as the home team
couldn't come up with anything threatening to worry Zbigniew Malkowski in
the Rotterdammers' goal. Excelsior concentrated on launching dangerously
fast counters and after 17 minutes Cecilio Lopesd the score. Wiljan
Vloet's team couldn't come up with any moves of their own, which is pretty
much their form of late, and they were lucky to be still unbeaten at this
stage. Roda looked better after the break and Fredrik Berglund drew them
level in the 62nd. 6 minutes later Lopes nosed the Rotterdammers ahead again
with a header and Leo Koswal added a 3rd in the 83rd. Patrick Mtiliga was
sent off in the 87th minute befor Edrissa Sonko scored a late consolation
2nd for the 'Kerkrade Crew' in the last minute. |

performances since promotion to the Ere Divisie with a fine away win at RKC.
The home team had also made a good start to the season and got off to the
better start this afternoon with several minor goal-scoring chances, the
best being for Rick Hoogendorp but Excelsior got into the match andd
with a goal by Patrick Mtiliga in the 45th. Second half goals by Leo Koswal
in the 78th and Australian Brett Holman in the last minute gave the
Rotterdammers 3 points to take home.

Excelsior

Lopes, Koswal - Holman, Pinas.
AZ lineup: Moens - Tobiasen,
Wijker, Lindenbergh, de Cler - Meerdink, Robbemond, Opdam, Van Galen -
Nelisse, Perez.
AZ booked their 2nd win of the season tonight.
The Alkmaarders had few problems dealing with Excelsior tonight and booked
their 2nd win of the season. Although the Kralingen side were at least as
good as the visitors during theng half but were sloppy in defence and
failed to convert their chances while the Alkmaarders did. Oscar Moens had
precious little to do while his opposite number Zbigniew Malkowski had more
than he'd have liked. Barry van Galen put the visitors ahead in the 33rd and
Robin Nelisse increased their advantage in the 44th. Excelsior-trainer Adri
Koster made a few changes during the break René van Dieren and Said
Boutahar came off, replaced byuMounir El Hamdaoui and Michel Fernandes
Bastos. Kenneth Perez and Martijn Meerdink could have put AZ even further
ahead but failed while Excelsior equally failed to find the back of the net
until Patrick Mtigla's consolation goal which was too late to swing the
match around.

| Sprockel
on loan to Excelsior,Olfers returns |
18 Sep 2002
|
|
Civard Sprockel is making the move to Excelsior
to give the satellite club an extra defender while Steve
Olfers and the Kralingen side have sorted out their differences. Olfers
had returned to the Kuip in a row over wages but the problems have been
solved and he's returning to the Woudenstein stadium. The conflict acted as
a catalyst to set Sprockel's transfer in motion which means that the
defender, who was in danger of stagnating at the Kuip (where trainer Bert
van Marwijk can call on Kees van Wonderen, Patrick Paauwe, Ferry de Haan and
Glenn Loovens), get's the chance to get in some match-action.

Olfers leaves Excelsior |
16 Sep 2002
|
|
Steve Olfers is leaving Excelsior in a row over
his contract. The defender was one of the best players in the field during
Saturday's match against but will now be returnoing to feyenoord after
rejecting the wages he's been offered by the Kralingers. Olfers is one of
several Feyenoord players currently on loan to the newly promoted Rotterdam
satellite cluband has been at the Woudenstein stadium for the last two
seasons. now that the tema i splaying in the Ere Divisie he's demanded an
improved deal which the the club is unwilling to meet. He's decided to
returnto the kuip where he can earn more money playing for the reserve team!
Excelsior are sad to see him go but can't understand his decision to go for
the money rather than continue playing Ere Divisie football.

get first win 4-2 v.Groningen |
14 Sep 2002
|
|
Excelsior
lineup: Malkowski - Swerts, Olfers, Breuer, Mtiliga - Van Dieren,
Holman, Boutahar - Koswal, Lopes, Pinas.
Groningen
lineup: Beukenkamp - Elshot, Allach, Matthijs, Florén - Hoogstrate,
Krstev, Broerse - Ikedia, Salmon, Tuhuteru.
Excelsior got their first and really convincing
win of the season with this defeat of Groningen. It looked for a while as
if the visitors would be able to cope with the Rotterdammers after Paul Matthijs put the Oosterpark side ahead in
the 36th minute. However, Adrie Koster's team turned on the juice with a
Brian Pinas equalizer a minute later and Steve Olfers
gave the home team the lead in the 40th. Joost Broerse drew Groningen level
in the 57th but Cecilio Lopes returned the lead to the home team in the 69th
and Said Boutahar took the score to 4-2 in the 75th. Groningen are now
the only Ere Divisie team not to have won a point.

| Feyenoord
beat Excelsior 4-1 |
10 Sep 2002
|
|
Feyenoord
lineup: Zoetebier, Gyan, Van Haaren, Van Wonderen, Emerton, Bosvelt, Buffel,
Ono, Paauwe, Van Hooijdonk, Lurling.
Excelsior
lineup: Malkowski, Buijs, Olfers, Breuer, Mtiliga, Swerts, Koswal, Boutahar,
Lopes, Holman, Pinas.
The fans' long wait for the debut of Chilean
midfielder Sebastián Pardo was rewarded with the sight of a goal by the young and talented midfielder. Former Willem II striker Mariano
Bombarda joined in the fun with a first goal since signing for the
Feyenoorders in the last minute of the match for the 4-1. Pierre van Hooijdonk
hadd the score for
Feyenoord with a spot-shot in the 11th for hands-ball by Danny Buys and added a free-kick special only 3 minutes
later for the 2-0. Brian Pinas, who'd gone backwards and forwards between
the two clubs during the summer, got one back for Excelsior in the 24th
hitting home the rebound from Brett Holmann's attempt which Edwin Zoetebier
failed to get under control. Excelsior contributed some attractive
football during the rest of the half but their 'big brother' had the best
chnaces with a Brett Emerton shot going wide, Danny Buys having to help out
on the goalline to clear a Van Hooijdonk header and goalie Zbigniew
Malkowski stopping Paul Bosvelt's shot. Pardo, who provided the pass for
Bosvelt's attempt, had come on in the 38th minute for the disappointing Anthony Lurling.
The 20 year-old took only 15 minutes to score his first for Feyenoord,
rounding off Thomas Buffel's pass for the 3-1 in the 53rd minute. The
match-tension disappeared after that, despite several more chances for the
home team. Feyenoord's other debutant of the evening, Argentinian striker Mariano Bombarda
(who appeared in the 70th to loud applause) took a little longer to join in
the fun and score but finally found the back of the net in the 90th for the
4-1.

| Boutahar
replaces Janssen in Jong Oranje |
03 Sep 2002
|
|
Said Boutahar is replacing Theo Janssen in the Jong
Oranje squad that plays Belarus in the first European Championship qualifier
against Belarus on Friday. Boutahar, who scored his first Ere Divisie goal
in the 1-1 draw against Zwolle last weekend, is the only Excelsior player in the
squad while Vitesse are the club supplying the most players with Nicky Hofs,
Michael Dingsdag and Riga Mustapha all being called-up.

24 Aug 2002
|
|
Zwolle
lineup: Van der Werff - Doesburg, R. Roelofsen, Kras, Schol - Promes,
Karlsen, Van der Haar, De Ridder - Lim-Duan, Cvetkov.
Excelsior lineup:
Malkowski
- Boutahar, Breuer, Olfers, Mtiliga - Van Dieren, Holman, Koswal, Swerts - Lopes, Pinas.
Excelsior snatched their first Ere Divisie point thanks to a 90th minute
goal against Zwolle last night. The Rotterdammers went behind early on in
the match but were rewarded for their efforts with a 1-1 result. Richard
Roelofsen scored in the 9th minute, to celebrate his 100th league goal (others
being netted netted for Vitesse, Roda JC, NAC and of course De Graafschap).
It looked like being the Zwollenaars' first Ere Divisie win since 1989 until
Said Boutahar rudely awoke them from that cosy dream with a last minute
goal.

lose to PSV 0-2 |
17 Aug 2002
|
|
Excelsior lineup: Malkowski, Buijs, Breuer, Olfers, Mtiliga, Van Dieren,
Holman, Boutahar, Swerts, Lopes and Pinas. PSV lineup: Waterreus, Bøgelund, Ooijer, Hofland, Bouma, Rommedahl, Van
Bommel, Vogel, Robben, Bruggink and Kezman.
Excelsior have suffered their first Ere Divisie
defeat, losing 0-2 to a rather uninspired PSV, despite playing some
attractive football. They started the match in furious style and Brian Pinas
had a 'golden' opportunity tothe score for them in theng seconds
but saw his attempt saved by an alert Ronald Waterreus. A defensive error by
Danny Buijs, misjudging a long-ball which landed at Mark van Bommel's feet,
allowed the PSV captian to slip past goalie Zbigniew Malkowski and score the
1-0 in the 3rd minute. The goal visibly disheartened the young Excelsior
side and Arnold Bruggink curled in a freekick in the 17th for the 2-0.
Dennis Rommedahl and Arjen Robben missed the next chances that PSV had while
after half an hour's play, the home team began to recover their confidence.
Their young Australian striker Brett Holman had the best chance, getting
past Waterreus but losing his balance under pressure from Kevin Hofland when
about to shoot. Seven minutes before half-time he hit the post with another
effort. Both sides failed to convert their goal-scoring chances after the
break, leaving the score unchanged at the final whistle.

get permit for Holman |
14 Aug 2002
|
|
Excelsior have obtained a work permit for
Australian striker Brett Holman. The 18 year-old said, "Cool! I hope
that the trainer will field me tonight in the Amstel Cup match against
Kranenburg." Holman has been lent to the newly promoted side by
'big-brother' Feyenoord and, though he already had a permit to play for the
Kuip club, permission to play for the Kralingen side has taken longer to
arrive. Feyenoord are meanwhile still waiting for permits to arrive for new
signings Sebastián Pardo and Chong-Gug
Sung.

Brett Holman waiting for permit |
13 Aug 2002
|
|
Excelsior are
still waiting for some news concerning Australian Brett Holman's application
for a work permit. The 18 year-old shadow-striker, who's been stalled at
the newly promoted side by big-brother Feyenoord, looks likely to miss theng match of the new season against PSV this Saturday at the Woudestein
stadium. Holman has already missed the club's first Amstel Cup match last
Saturday against amateurs Capelle (won 3-1) and trainer Adrie Koster will
also have to do without the youngster for Wednesday's Cup match against
amateurs Kranenburg. "I only heard a couple of days ago that my papers
are not yet in order and it's really irritating because I'm raring to get
started."

| Pinilla
on trial with Excelsior |
12 Aug 2002
|
|
Mauricio Pinilla will be
arriving in Holland today to spend 10 days training with Feyenoord's newly
promoted satellite club Excelsior while also undergoing a medical
examination. Pinilla is an 18 year-old striker currently under contract to
Chilean side Universidad de Chile, where
Feyenoord's recent signing Sebastián Pardo originated from. Technical director Rob
Baan saw Pinilla in action for the first time last month at Universidad de
Chile and the youngster's former teammate Pardo was able to bring him up to
date on life in Holland and the situation at Excelsior. Baan and Pinilla
reached agreement on the length and terms of his stay in Rotterdam yesterday
while the two clubs still have to finalise the terms of any deal if his
trial is successful.

city council have decided to grant Excelsior a loan not exceeding €1
million Euros. The newly promoted side will be able to use the money to
renovate their Woudestein stadium which the council wasn't prepared to
subsidise with public money. After an absence of 15 seasons the club have
finally regained a place in the Ere Divisie after previously spending 12
seasons in the top-flight. A 9th place in the 1979/80 and 1982/83 seasons
is their best Ere Divisie achievement.

| Excelsior
celebrate 100th birthday |
23 July 2002
|
Rotterdam side
Excelsior are celebrating their 100th birthday today! The newly promoted
Centenary club were almost dead 10 years ago but are now very much alive
and kicking as they prepare for the coming Ere Divisie season! The
Kralingen club have always been careful with their money and now that
fans are returning in droves to watch them play top-flight football
things couldn't be better financially!
Excelsior (Latin voor 'ever-higher') was founded on July 23rd 1902 by a
group of local young-men who played soccer every week on a piece of of
land belonging to Villa Woudesteyn. They took their own goal-posts and
played on a pitch which was 80 metres by 40, without anything resembling
changing rooms, so the players donned their strip in the nearby hostel
'In den Rustwat'. In 1903 they made their first appearance, the
exact date remains unknown but it was soon after the club's founding-date,
and ended in a 1-1 draw against Neptunus. After a series of footballing
successes they were admitted to the Dutch Football Association (NVB) in
the 1904/1905 season. Legendary former chairman Henk Zon, who had a
stand named after him, played an important role in the formation of the
new Dutch League in 1954. The resulting Dutch FA (KNVB) was
initially fiercely opposed to the idea of Professional football,
preferring to maintain its amateur status, with the result that many
players went abroad in search of their bread-and-butter! They were '
punished' by the FA in Holland for their ' treachery' and were excluded from
playing for the Dutch national team but thanks to Zon's efforts the
Dutch FA finally accepted that footballers should be paid for their '
work'.
Excelsior gained promotion to the Ere Divisie for the first time at the
beginning of the 1970s with a team that included such illustrious names
as Thijs Libregts (later trainer with Excelsior), Eddy van der Roer,
Theo van Toledo, Sjaak Roggeveen and Wim Meutstege.
Since then Excelsior have forged stronger links with ' big-brother' Feyenoord
and players have flowed backwards and forwards between the Kuip and
Woudestein. Six years ago the cooperation pact was given a new lease of
life with Feyenoord stalling their young up-and-coming talent with
their smaller neighbour so that they could ripen while still playing
professional league football and, after a difficult start, the
relationship has blossomed. Several players who now play for the Kuip
side have learnt their trade on the other side of the river Maas while
Excelsior have benefitted from the influx of talented youngsters, the
interest generated helping them to realise the construction of a new
stadium with a capacity of 3,500 (nowadays always sold-out), and also to
rise above mediocrity which in turn has lead to their recent
promotion.
Excelsior's official name is actually Stichting Betaald Voetbal Excelsior (till
July 1st1998 they were 'simply' known as: Rotterdamse Voetbal- en
Athletiekvereniging Excelsior). A strict statutary division has since been
made between the amateur and professional wings of the club.

| Korneev
trains with Excelsior |
12 July 2002
|
|
Igor Korneev is currently training with
Excelsior after being told last season that he's no longer welcome at
Feyenoord. While waiting to see if he can find a new club the 35 year-old
Russian defender asked Feyenoord's newly promoted satellite club if he
could train with their squad and trainer Adri Koster agreed in the hope
that his young squad might learn something from the more experienced
player. Excelsior are not interested in signing Korneev as they need more
experienced players for other positions and the Russian player has had, as
yet, no offers from other clubs in the extremely quite transfer market.

Excelsior are planning
to extend their stadium-capacity by making use of the empty four corners
of the stadium to build extra seating for 1,000 spectators. The
construction work will cost €1.5 million Euros and take 6 months to
complete. Excelsior asked Rotterdam city council for a subsidy to pay for
the work immediately after gaining promotion at the end of last season.
The extra seating will increase capacity at the Woudenstein stadium to
4,500.

ask Rotterdam for financial aid |
05 July 2002

| Excelsior
have followed Sparta's example and applied to Rotterdam city council for
financial aid totalling €1.5 million Euros. The money is badly needed to
improve stadium-safety for when Feyenoord, Ajax and PSV come to call! The
club feel that if the council can lend money to Sparta they can also lend
some to Excelsior! Speaking to the newspaper "Rotterdams Dagblad"
the club's director Simon Kelder said, "We've done our best in
the past to improve our facilities with a modest sum of money and it can't
be fair that a club that's mismanaged itself (read Sparta) and been
relegated can receive a loan while a club that gains promotion and looks
after its finances (read Excelsior) receives nothing!"

| Bart
Latuheru looks set to return to Excelsior, the club where he began his
professional career, and spend another year footballing before hanging up
his boots. The 36 year-old, who is holding talks today with the newly
promoted club, was not offered a contract extension at NEC. He made his
debut for Excelsior in the 1985/1986 season. Excelsior-trainer Adrie
Koster announced that he was looking for experienced players to reinforce
his young squad and Latuheru fits the bill with 492 league matches under
his belt for Excelsior, Vitesse, AZ and NEC.
