| Boateng
urges Middlesbrough to sign Zenden
|
20 Apr 2004 |
|
Former Feyenoord ace George
Boateng has urged Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren to try and hold onto
their key-players before combing the market for new talents.
Boateng is convinced that new-boys Gaizka Mendieta, Boudewijn Zenden and
Danny Mills have played a crucial role for the club in a season which has
already reaped a major reward in the shape of the Carling Cup.
The 28-year-old former Dutch international is also hoping that the club tie
up loan signings Mills and Zenden on permanent deals. Boateng: "This
squad has come together very nicely and we have to keep it together. There's
no point in losing four or five players at the end of the season because you
just have to bring four or five new ones in and it takes time for them to
settle in. That is what happened at the start of this season - we weren't
ready for the start of the season. We didn't get anybody in until late and
that is why we got off to such a bad start. We don't want that to happen
again this summer. If this team wants to move forward, then we have to keep
these players at the club. If there is any money to spend in the summer, it
must be spent on keeping players at the club before we even think about
bringing players in. The club has done well to get players like Bolo and
Mendi in and we want to be hanging on to players like that.''

| Rijkaard
still interested in Van Nistelrooy
|
20 Apr 2004 |
|
Although Manchester United ace Ruud
van Nistelrooy claims that he is not interested in a move to sunny Spain,
meanwhile Barcelona coach
Frank Rijkaard has confirmed the club is chasing Juventus striker David
Trezeguet and the Dutch international striker. Rijkaard: "David is an
unequalled player, this is sure. He would surely be an optimal player to
reinforce us. But on
our list, there is also the Dutchman, who is more forceful and technical than
the juventino."

| Ronald
de Boer close to Qatar deal
|
20 Apr 2004 |
Glasgow Rangers midfielder Ronald
de Boer, who announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of the
season, has
confirmed he is close to agreeing a move to Qatar.
De Boer: "I am currently awaiting a confirmation of my transfer to a club
out there. Negotiations are nearly done. I can't say much about that as
professional players sign for the league, who then decide where you are going
to play. All clubs are from Doha, so it's just a matter of waiting to see
which club I will play for. It would not be a sensible move to stay another
year with Rangers. Not for me and not for the club. My battery is empty and
it's time to move on. I will either play for a club in Qatar or I quit
football. That's how I see my near future. Conditions in Qatar are perfect.
They only play 26 games in a warm climate. That's good for my body. As I am
getting older I am getting more and more small aches. I can feel better when
the weather isn't so bad and I also don't feel like playing 50 games a season
anymore. I must also admit that the financial rewards are very attractive and
it's the best way to end my career. It would not be right just to quit at
once."

| Martijn
Reuser wants Ipswich exit
|
20 Apr 2004 |
Former Ajax and Vitesse ace Martijn
Reuser says that he is sick and tired of starting so many games on the bench
and wants to leave Ipswich as soon as possible.
The midfielder is even prepared to leave the club if they achieve promotion to
The Premiership.
Reuser who came off the bench this weekend and turned a 0-1 deficit into a 2-1
win with one goal and one assist, said: "I'm
looking for a new club. The manager Joe Royle has made it clear I do not
figure in his plans. I want regular football and that means playing the full
90 minutes. Several times this year I have been asked to come off the bench
and prove myself and I feel I have done that. But the boss feels that I am
better used changing the game halfway through rather than from the start.
I've got one year left on my
contract but I hope to get a summer transfer. Even if we go up, I'd rather be
playing the whole match in Division One than be a substitute in The
Premiership."

| Van
Nistelrooy not concerned about dry spell
|
20
Apr 2004 |
Dutch international striker Ruud
van Nistelrooy says he is not concerned about his dry spell of going two
months without a Premiership goal for Manchester United but believes that he
has become a better all-round player
Van Nistelrooy "Not scoring in the league since February makes it sound
like a disaster but, if you discount the game against Fulham where I played 10
minutes, then it is only four games. I
want to score goals, the next game is always my next opportunity to score. But
my general play has improved a lot. There are little things I try to work on.
I'm holding the ball up better and I've improved my play when we're in
possession. The more you play, the more experience you gain and the better you
become."
|
| Bergkamp
not interested in Ajax return
|
20 Apr 2004 |
Dennis Bergkamp has started
new in contract talks with Arsenal. Bergkamp:
"I'd love to stay with Arsenal. I've had a good talk with manager Arsene
Wenger. I told him I would like to carry on for one more year and he said we
were on the same wavelength. We haven't talked about money yet. People say the
money doesn't really matter but it does show you how much a club respects you.
It's also nice when the club
kicks things off."
Bergkamp has also told his agent Rob Jansen to inform Ajax that he has no
desire to return to the club were he learnt the tricks of the trade and that
should he fail to secure a new deal with Arsenal then he will hang up his
boots.

| Frank
Rijkaard's Barca continue to impress
|
19 Apr 2004 |
|
Frank Rijkaard's Barcelona continue their
impressive run in the domestic league after a 3-0 destruction of Malaga.
During the first half of the season, the Dutch
trainer came under heavy pressure after failing to make an impact with
Barca's forgotten stars. However, the second half of this season has seen
Frank Rijkaard mould his team into side evoking memories of Johan Cryuff's
'Dream Team'.
Malaga were fortunate to hold the damage to just 3 goals that were all
netted within 35 minutes. Barcad the scoring through Saviola in
the 18th minute who rounded off a Garcia cross and 5 minutes later Garcia
finished with style a Saviola pass. Barcelona's Dutch captain Philip
Cocu gave the scoreline a more realistic look in the 35th minute.
Frank Rijkaard said afterwards: "We began very well. We knew that
Malaga was a team that had produced good results. We waited for a little
while, but the actions of Ronaldinho was fundamental. "Luis
Garcia had a good game. Saviola took advantage of a special game and scored
a fine goal. They are understanding each other well. I am happy. Cocu
also must receive congratulations. We must enjoy this result."

| Bobby
Petta to leave Fulham this summer
|
19 Apr 2004 |
|
Former Dutch international winger Bobby Petta has
been unable to impress Fulham during his on loan stay from Celtic and is now
expected to return to the
Scottish Premier League giants in the summer. Petta's
future at Celtic does not look all too promising after having been frozen out
by Martin O'Neill for almost two years.

| Van
Nistelrooy rubbishes Barcelona reports
|
18 Apr 2004 |
Manchester United striker Ruud van
Nistelrooy has rubbished reports suggesting
that he is planning to swap United for an adventure in sunny Spain.
In the English newspaper 'Sunday Mirror' Van Nistelrooy says that the claims
in the newspaper 'The Sun' about his exit at the end of the season are
complete nonsense. Van Nistelrooy "To
suggest that I want to leave is ludicrous. I don't know where these stories
are coming from.
I don't care when I read in the newspaper that I am going to Real Madrid or
Barcelona after this season. It is all total rubbish. I thought long and hard
about the implications of signing a new four-year contract at United and I
have no regrets whatsoever. I
have said many times I would be happy to see out the best days of my career at
this club and nothing has changed

| Dutch
trio noticeable against Liverpool
|
18 Apr 2004 |
London outfit Fulham's three Dutch players played a
noticeable role in their Premier League away match to Liverpool.
Liverpool's chances of European football were dented after drawing 0-0 in a
match were their back-line were tricked and fooled by former Twente ace Colin
John. The 18-year-old Dutch youth international however forgot to round off
his actions with a goal despite a number of good chances.
In the second act, former Dutch international winger Bobby Petta clumsily
hand-balled in the area. Penalty spot specialist Michael Owen allowed Steven
Gerrard to take the penalty that Dutch international number 1 Edwin van der
Sar stopped with a terrific save to earn his outfit a valuable point.

| Ronald
de Boer to leave Rangers this summer
|
16 Apr 2004 |
Glasgow Rangers midfielder Ronald
de Boer has announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of the
season. The future of twin brother Frank is still uncertain, although
the Dutch international defender says
that he would like to ink a new extension with the Scottish Premier
League giants.
Ronald: "It is more or less certain that I will leave the club at the end
of the season even though I have not signed a contract elsewhere. Perhaps,
Quatar is an option but maybe I will just stop"

the seasonby Rangers-manager Alex McLeish who intends building a new squad.

| Rijkaard
blames referee for 1-1 draw
|
15 Apr 2004 |
Barca manager Frank Rijkaard believes that poor
refereeing contributed to Barcelona's 1-1 with Real Betis and feels that
his outfit missed a golden opportunity to close in on the Spanish Primera
leaders. Barca ended the match with just nine men and Rijkaard is convinced
that goalkeeper Valdes, who was one of the players sent off, still has a lot to
learn.
Rijkaard: "We missed a golden opportunity to gain some ground on the
leaders. We were facing a team we should have beaten. In this match, there were
exterior influences that prevented us from playing our best," referring to
the questionable part played by the referee.
The 1-1 draw sees Barcelona's slim title hopes more or less extinguished in a
match where Javier Saviola put the Catalans ahead early on, and Alfonso equalising
from the spot later in the first-half.
In the 32nd minute, Valdes was sent-off for pushing Dani to the ground inside
the box. It was rough justice for Valdes.
Turkish outcast Rustu Recber replaced the youngster in goal, but had no answer
for Alfonso's penalty.
Into the dying Gerard was given his second yellow card of the match for a
foul on Joaquin.

de Boer wants Rangers extension
|
15 Apr 2004 |
|
Glasgow Rangers defender Frank de Boer says that he
is prepared to come back on his decision about deciding his future after the
European Championships in Portugal and is now willing to hold talks with
Rangers about a new extension.
The veteran defender is one of a number of players out of contract at the end
of the season, including twin brother, but believes that he can
play an important part for Alex McLeish who is keen to build a new team. De
Boer believes that he is still has another two years football in his aging
limbs and says that he may well play them out at Ibrox.
He told Rangers News: "Everything is possible. I'm happy here so we will
have to wait and see. I had planned to wait until after Portugal before making
a decision but now there might be some talks before then. I'm not in a rush. I
am not considering other offers at the moment. Of course Ronald said there
were some negotiations for him about going to Qatar but for me everything is At the moment I'm feeling good and playing like I'm 22 again. I could
play for another two years, no problem."

to either Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Van Nistelrooy's agent Roger
Linse discussed wage terms with Barcelona vice-president Sandro Rossell

reported as saying: "We will beat Manchester United's wage packet.
We
will offer Ruud the chance to win great trophies and follow in the footsteps of
Dutch legends like Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens and Louis van Gaal. We know your client has been
learning Spanish. We'll help Ruud work for one of his idols in Frank Rijkaard
and he can play in front of a player who genuinely inspires him - Ronaldinho.
Here he can win trophies at a
club on its way up instead of on its way down."

euros a season.

| Rijkaard
tells Kluivert stop talking to media
|
12 Apr 2004 |
|
Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has
warned fellow compatriot Patrick Kluivert to stop waging his battles
with the club through the media.
Rijkaard: "This game
in the press is going to cause problems. This complicates things for the
player. Patrick needs to be
intelligent. In his situation, he is better saying nothing, because things can
count against him. The best
thing for Patrick would be to let his feet do the talking. His chance will
soon arrive and he needs to be ready. Players
must protect themselves from falling into the trap. I
have spoken to him about this and I know it is a tough situation for him. Not
playing is difficult but sometimes it is part of the life of a
professional."

| Melchiot
confident of earning new contract
|
12 Apr 2004 |
|
Dutch international full back
Mario Melchiot says he is
confident of earning a new contract at Chelsea.
Melchiot: "I have only got a couple of months left on my contract and no
new offer yet. The most
important thing is playing well for the rest of the season and trying to win a
trophy for the club. I am
not worrying what might happen in the summer. I don't want to lose my
concentration. But
eventually it is normal that you get offers and people want to sign you.
I am totally focused on
helping Chelsea to win something. Then an offer might happen for me."

| Hasselbaink
determined to stay at Chelsea
|
12 Apr 2004 |
|
Chelsea
pinch-hitter r Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink says that he would be very upset if
he should be forced to quit the club for regular first team football.
Hasselbaink: "I've
said I don't want to leave, I've not said I want to leave. I'm a football
player and I want to play. If
I play well I want to stay in the team, like everybody else. If I play bad,
okay, then I can accept that I have to sit down. But if I have a good run, I'm
like everybody else, I want to play. That's what I'm paid to do, and that's
what I want to do -
And if I can't do that here, at Chelsea, I will cry. But I have to do it then
somewhere else, if you know what I mean. It's not that I want to leave but...Chelsea
is my club, I love it to bits and I hope I can stay here. I want to be a part
of it and I want to play.

| Kluivert
lashes out at Barcelona
|
11 Apr 2004 |
Although Patrick Kluivert recently
stated that he wants to remain at Barcelona next season. and is
even prepared to accept another wage cup to remain with the Catalan outfit, it
would now seem that has
moved closer to the exit door at the Nou Camp. The Booby Robson target vented
his concern yesterday saying: "No-one from the club has
spoken to me. I can't remember the last time Txiki, Rosell or somebody from
the club spoke with me. I am tired of defending lies. Sometimes
I think that it would be better playing outside of Barca, that's my current
thinking. I am not interested in reviewing my contract. I am not going to take
a Euro less. I've already done this once last summer because the club needed
help, I won't do it again."

| Collins
John scores 2 for Fulham
|
11 Apr 2004 |
Collins John, who
joined Fulham during the winter transfer window, has been hailed by
Fulham manager Chris Coleman
who believes that the former Twente ace will be a big hit in the future
after bagging a brace against struggling Leicester City.
Collins, who began on the bench scored twice to give Edwin Fulham their
first away win since their 3-1 triumph against Manchester United.
Coleman: "There were one or two big
clubs after him but luck was on our side and we were the ones who managed to
sign him.. He's played for Holland at Under-18 level and at Under-21 level.
He's a strong boy, big for his age, and he could
certainly be a big player for us if he keeps banging them in like that. He's
one for the future and we'll be feeding him in and out of games."

| Fulham
want Van der Sar to leave ?
|
10 Apr 2004 |
There are conflicting reports
concerning Fulahm goalkeeper Ediwn van der Sar. Dutch media reports have
suggested that the chance that Dutch international
goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar
moves to PSV at the end of the season has increased now that Fulham
boss Chris Coleman says he is planning to free up funds in his player budget
by offloading two of his highest paid players. Goalkeeper
Edwin van der Sar and striker Steve Marlet who both earn in the region of 60,000
euros a-week and Coleman are both to be allowed to leave the club to free up
cash for his summer transfer plans.
However, in the Englsih media

I'll leave."

| Rijkard
blasts Quaresma in front of media
|
09
Apr 2004 |
|
Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has
reportedly given Ricardo Quaresma a severe warning about his
unprofessional conduct in front of journalists. The former Holland coach
is angered by reports in the Spanish media in which Quaresma says that
Rijkaard completely ignores him.
The allegations prompted Rijkaard to assemble the entire squad before the
start of the morning training session and demand that Quaresma stand in the
middle of the circle and to explain his remarks to both the squad as well as
sport journalists.
Rijkard was then quoted as saying: "if you have a problem with me, you
address it here or in the locker room not out there or anywhere else. My doors
are alwaysto you if you want to discuss things but I am disappointed in
you."
Quaresma, who looked down at the pitch the entire time, said sorry and the
club resumed training.

| Melchiot
urges Chelsea to stick with Ranieri
|
08
Apr 2004 |
|
In an interview on English radio
station 'Radio Five Live' Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot has urged the club's
Russian owner Roman Abramovich to clarify manager Claudio Ranieri's
position. Rumours have been rife all season concerning the amiable
trainers position but after Chelsea's stunning mid-week match against Arsenal
in which the club qualified for their first-ever Champions League semi-final.
The 27-year-old Dutch international, who played an important role in the
historic 2-1 victory over Arsenal says it is now time to end all the
speculations. Melchiot: "Everybody wants to hear about next season,
for some of the players and trainers as well. Hopefully they will come out at
the end of the season and kill the rumours because it will help the club and
the players.
He is our coach with the lion's heart. It was a good thing, for all of us
together, and he is involved in it. I have been here for five years and I have
never had this moment [a Champions League semi-final] in all my time playing
here."
|
| Melchiot
"players meeting key to
success"
|
08
Apr 2004 |
|
Dutch international Mario
Melchiot believes that a Chelsea meeting that was held after Arsenal knocked
the "Blues 'out of the FA Cup and a few days later beat Chelsea in the
Premier League, was the clue to their mid-week Champions League success over
their arch rivals.
The 27-year-old defender explained: "After they knocked us out of the FA
Cup and then beat us in the Premiership, all the players met and we promised
we would not allow Arsenal to destroy our whole season. When
we drew them in the Champions League, we laughed and we knew this was our
chance to make sure Arsenal didn't ruin everything for us. I've been at the
club for five years and we'd never beaten Arsenal before. I played in most of
those 17 games but none of them was as important as this one. We chose the
right moment to beat them.
People said they might have a psychological grip over us but we proved that is
not true. I have never felt more joy after a game than I did on Tuesday. Now
we have to keep up the pressure on Arsenal because the title race is not over.
They have two very tough games this weekend against Liverpool and Newcastle,
two teams who are going for the Champions League and would die to beat
Arsenal. Every team has a bad spell in a season and Arsenal are having theirs
now. I know they are
still a great team and I admire their quality - but they have not won the
title yet. Of course, we have to keep winning our games and keep the pressure
on them."

| Kluivert
set to ink Barcelona extension
|
07
Apr 2004 |
|
Patrick Kluivert wants to remain at
Barcelona next season. Kluivert, who has just returned from an injury, says
that he is very happy at Nou Camp, is not afraid of up-front competition and
is even prepared to accept another wage cup to remain with Barcelona.
Last season Kluivert was forced to accept a wage cup. The club's governing
body have given Kluivert an ultimatum of accepting an addiotional wage cut or
leave the club.
Despite interest from a number of clubs, Kluivert has decided to stay in
Spain. Kluivert: "Why shouldn't I stay. I feel great here. Last year I
had to accept a drop in salary but nonetheless we can still discuss the
situation." Regarding recent press reports suggesting that the
Catalan outfit have targeted French striker David Trezeguet for next season,
Kluivert replied:
"Every year they say that a new striker is coming. I have gotten used to
that by now. Perhaps I'm the number 9 the club are looking for"

| Signing
Davids high priority for Barcelona
|
07
Apr 2004 |
|
A number of reports emerging from Spain suggest that Dutch
midfielder Edgar Davids is likely to remain with the Catalan outfit after his
6 months loan spell ends. The former Juventus ace has made such a good
impression since his arrival, that
chairman Joan Laporta is determined to see the Dutch international playing at
Nou Camp next season and Laporta has told the Spanish press that signing Edgar
Davids is one of the clubs' main priorities.
"We must sign him. He has played very well for us and we have looked like
a much better side since his arrival. Signing him will be high on our list of
priorities this summer," he said

| Koeman
to help Van der Meyde leave Inter
|
06
Apr 2004 |
Premier League outfit Birmingham
City want to sign Andy van der Meyde but his current club Inter Milan are
unwilling to let the 24-year-old winger go. If
Van der Meyede continues to press for a transfer then Ajax trainer
Ronald Koeman believes that Ajax should do everything they can to bring the
Dutch international back to Holland.
In an interview in the Dutch weekly football magazine 'Voetbal
International'Koeman explained: "If Andy really wants to come back to
Holland then we should do everything we can to make sure he can return to
Amsterdam"
However, after a meeting with Inter, Van der Meyde has now stated that he will
have one more attempt at trying to gain a first team place with the Italian
giants. Van der Meyde:
"I am now going to try and fight my way back into the first team and I
will make up the balance at the end of the season."

| Hasselabink
ready to gun down Gunners
|
06
Apr 2004 |
Dutch international
striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink believes Chelsea's time has finally come to
end their Arsenal jinx and is convinced that the 'Blues' will gun down the
'Gunners' into tonight's Champions League quarter-final.
Even though Arsenal have not lost to Chelsea in their last 17 meetings and
have beaten Chelsea three times this season Hasselbaink insists that
Chelsea can finally bring that disastrous sequence to an end.
Chelsea's top scorer explained: "None
of us Chelsea players are afraid of this game. You can see that in all of our
eyes. We believe we can beat Arsenal. We believe it's just a matter of
time before we succeed against them. It has to happen for us.
They have always been close games between us. They have had luck on their side
more often than us. Sometimes you have to go and make the luck yourself and
not wait for it. We all know what this game means - and believe me, everybody
is ready. It will come down to whichever team is calmest on the night and has
the most patience. But we have the
firepower. In every game we've shown that. And if you don't believe in
yourself then no-one else will."
Although Hasselbaink has not always been coach Raneiri's first choice this
season, he is almost certain to start at Highbury tonight after netting four
goals in the club's last tow games, making him an almost irresistible choice
for the starting line-up.
Yesterday Hasselbaink arrived with Ranieri for the press conference and the
Chelsea manager said: "Come and sit next to me Jimmy, on the bench."
Hasselbaink laughed and rolled his eyes but he will
not be in good humour if he loses his place after hitting a hat-trick against
Wolves ten days ago and the winner at Tottenham on Saturday. That goal hauled
Chelsea right back into the title race, just four points behind Arsenal.
"It's not up to me and if it was then of course I'd be playing. But I'm
happy with the season as a whole. I feel I have done my bit for the
team," said Hasselbaink. "I feel good at this time. I always want to
do well and I always want to score."

Boer says it is hard to find motivation
|
06
Apr 2004 |
Dutch international Frank de Boer says that it is
hard to be motivated for their remaining games this now that there chances
of winning the Scottish Premier League title have been reduced to zero, but
is nonetheless aware that he will need to give his best if he wants to be
selected for the squad to take part in Euro 2004 in Portugal this summer.
De Boer said: "It's not very easy to get up for games but every player
has his own purpose to stay at the highest level. Hopefully after this
season there will be a big improvement from me - some players have to prove
themselves next year and young players can prove themselves too."

| Barcelona
explore signing of Van Nistelrooy
|
06
Apr 2004 |
|
According to reports in the
Spanish newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo' Barcelona president Joan Laporta is
intending to explore the possibility of signing Manchester United striker Ruud
van Nistelrooy. The newpaper says that Laporta has decided to make tentative
enquiries after hearing through intermediaries that Van Nistelrooy is
unsettled at Old Trafford and is becoming isolated in the United dressing
room.
The Dutch international goal-machine has often indicated that he is missing
the influence of David Beckham and Laporta is believed to have been encouraged
by what he has learned in recent days. The Catalan outfit are also in the
market for Juventus striker Davids Trezeguet but if the talks with Juventus
over the Frenchman continue to drag on then they will immidiatley switch their
attentions towards Van Nistelrooy.

|
Barcelona president Joan Laporta
has confirmed that the Catalan giants are interested in bringing French
international David Trezeguet to the club this summer but has stated that he
will first ask Frank Rijkaard if the Juventus star fits into his plans for
next season.
Laporta: "It's
true the relationship between us and the Bianconero club are optimal and my
relationship with Roberto Bettega is extremely cordial. However,
before taking an important decision on the merit of acquiring the Frenchman, I
must speak with Frank Rijkaard and establish if the player re-enters in his
plans."

| Van
der Sar tells Fulham he wants to leave
|
05
Apr 2004 |
London
outfit Fulham have been dealt an enormous blow after hearing PSV
target Edwin van der Sar declare he wants to leave.
In an interview in the English newspaper 'News of the World, Van der
Sar explained his decision:
"Fulham is not my club. I still want to win
things and I know that will never happen at Fulham. That's
the reason why I want to go back to Holland. I am 33 and this is my last
chance to play for a big club and possibly to win major trophies. When
I discussed my contract here three years ago they told me of the money they
had, the big names they wanted to buy, the new stadium they were going to
build and how we were going to build and how we were going to lift Fulham to
the top, even to the top in Europe. But there were just nice words. The worst
thing is that they sold Louis Saha. He was key to our success"
The news shall surely please PSV boss Guus Hiddink who would like to see the
Dutch international goalkeeper fill the void that will be left by goalkeeper
Ronald Waterreus who will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

| Bergkamp
to be offered reduced extension
|
05
Apr 2004 |
|
Arsenal
manager Arsene Wenger has indicated that there is still room for Dennis
Bergkamp in his team next season but has hinted that if the former Dutch
international wants to extend his contract that runs out this summer, then it
will have to be on reduced terms. Wenger also indicated that the Dutch ace
will have to accept that he will not always be first choice.
Wenger: "I feel Dennis looks really
sharp. Last season, he had little niggles here and there and we had to pull
him out of training. That has never been the
case this season. He had a good pre-season as well. Mentally,
of course he deserves a new contract as he's been amazing. But you have to
consider, at his age, that it's short-term. It
also depends on him as to what he will accept. Will he accept that the time
comes that you're not an automatic choice? However,
you can still be very useful if you can adapt to coming on and making the
difference."

van Hooijdonk scores 20th goal
|
04
Apr 2004 |
|
Turkish side Fenerbahçe took
another step towards the domestic title after beating Sebatspor 4-2.
Fenerbahçe got off to a bad start and found themselves trailing 0-1 after 50
seconds after Kinali Selahattin netted.
Just three minutes later P'Air leveled but his goal was rejected as being
off-side. However, TV replays suggest that the goal should not have been
disallowed.
In the 15th minute Fenerbahçe drew level when Van Hooijdonk's header found
Sanli Tuncay who neatly lobbed for the 1-1.
3 minutes later Serhat Akin was on target with the 2-1 and on the brink of
half-time Akin completed his brace thanks to an assist from the Dutch
international bench-sitter.
Halfway through the second act Derelioalu brough some excitement back into the
match when reducing the arrears to just one goal. With just 5 minutes
remaining on the clock, P'Air nodded in a Sergei Rebrov corner for his 20th
goal of the season.

| Hasselbaink
scores winner for Chelsea
|
04
Apr 2004 |
|
Chelsea's Dutch international
striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was once again on target for Chelsea with an
inportant goal after grabbing the winner in his team's 1-0 victory at
Tottenham yesterday. Even though Spurs were able to dominate most of the game
the class of Chelsea played the difference after Hasselbaink netted his effort
midway through the first-half. "There
are seven matches until the end of the season and we want to continue and try
to do our best," said Blues boss Claudio Ranieri. "Three points were
very important today and I said to my players we have been working hard since
the beginning of the season and now we are very close to doing something
important for Chelsea. We
are in good condition now and playing good football. We want to improve on
last season and everything is in our hands - we must continue to play with
this mentality. It
was difficult today because London derbies are tight, so it was important to
come here and win."

| Nistelrooy
won't let Henry get his own way
|
03
Apr 2004 |
|
Today's FA Cup clash between Manchester
United and Arsenal sees the Premier League's two best strikers in action,
although Van Nistelrooy has been squandering more chances in the last three
months than he would care to remember.
Former England striker Gary Lineker believes Van Nistelrooy's should be judged
on his long term record. Lineker: "Most
people judge these things on current form but you have to take the long-term
view. When Van Nistelrooy's banging them in everyone thinks he's the best, but
when Henry's scoring they claim it's him. Henry
is ahead on current form. He's definitely a better all-round player, with more
pace and skill, whereas Van Nistelrooy is what you would describe as the
archetypal striker. He can't do the things that Henry does. And when you look
at the records, Henry seems to score as many if not more than Van Nistelrooy."
Ahead of this evening's clash, Van Nistelrooy's new up front colleague Louis
Saha's recent remarks in L'Equipe have been blown up by some English
newspapers as an attack on his team-mate. "His game is all about
finishing," said Saha. "Ruud
never scores from outside the 18-yard area and never takes free-kicks. It is
very rare to see him trying his luck from distance. He is strong and uses his
body well to shield the ball but, unlike Thierry, he can't run 100 metres in
eight seconds. Thierry is a tough all-round athlete whereas Ruud doesn't take
as much part in the team's collective play."
Van Nistelrooy has admitted to Dutch journalists this week "When United
lose I feel solely responsible. Things get too much for me. My brain will go
mad. I have a storm in my head and the noise inside is deafening. It takes a
lot out of me. At times I just feel numb."
This may have been Arsenal's season so far, but Van Nistelrooy will be
determined Henry does not get it all his own way toda

Nistelrooy doubtful for FA Cup clash
|
03
Apr 2004 |
|
Ahead of today's dazzling FA Cup
clash between Premier League giants Manchester United and Arsenal,
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted Ruud van Nistelrooy is a
"serious doubt" for tonight's semi final game.
Sir Alex: "Ruud is a serious doubt. It is looking very doubtful for him
at the moment. All we can do is hope there will be a change over the next 24
hours. It would be a bitter
blow for us if he was to miss out because he is the man who can win us the
game. We do have plenty of
players who can replace him though Diego Forlan will go straight to the team
hotel tonight."
The Dutch strike ace has fluid on his knee
and medical experts say he is not fit enough to take on Arsenal.
Van Nistelrooy will do everything to try and start as he cannot bear the
thought of finishing another season potless. If
United lose, he will be left with just ONE title medal to show for his three
years work at Old Trafford. Van Nistelrooy
said: “People say it is part of the game — you win some, you lose some.
Not for me. Losing is not in my vocabulary. When
Porto knocked us out of the Champions League I only slept two hours that
night. I was not a nice person to be with"

says Barca should hold onto Kluivert

Barcelona midfielder Thiago Motta believes that the
club should do everything in their power to hold onto Dutch international
striker Patrick Kluivert.
Motta: "They would be making a mistake if they let him go. He is an idol
at the club and I would not like to see him leave. But I am not the one who
calls the shots around here,"
Barcelona are reportedly seeking a new striker to lead their attack and
Kluivert's days at the club could be numbered.

| Hasselbaink
cleared of Elbow jab
|
02
Apr 2004 |
|
Chelsea super sub Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was
cleared of violent behavior following an incident in an FA Cup match against
Scarborough in January in which the Dutch international bench-sitter seemed to
have dished out an elbow jab during Chelsea's 1-0 FA Cup fourth round
win at the McCain stadium in January.
However after the FA heard Hasselbaink's side of the story the ruling body
said on its official website that there was no evidence to support the claims
that Hasselbaink had acted violently. Hasselbaink
stpped of the bench last weekend and scored a hat-trick as Chelsea beat
the Wolves 5-2.

Although Manchester United ace Ruud
van Nistelrooy has stated that he intends finishing off his career with
Manchester United, he could still be persuaded to leave the club
now that Real Madrid have
told the Dutch international striker to name his price. According
to reports in the Englsih daily newspaper 'the Sun' Van Nistelrooy can earn at
least 180 thousand euros per week by moving to Spain which is considerably
more than the 125 thousand that he now earns The transfer fee would also
be at least 45 million euros. Real
have been alerted to Van Nistelrooy's potential availability after the
Dutchman had a fall-out with boss Alex Ferguson prior to the League match
against Fulham at the end of February.

Sander Westerveld, who is currently sidelined with a finger injury, says he
intends to see out his contract with the club despite rumours that the club
would like to dispose of him this summer. Although Sociedad are very
pleased with Westerveld, the club's precarious financial situation has made
them consider selling Westerveld at the end of the in order to give their
younger players a chance which includes Spanish Under-21 international
goalie Asier Riesgo who is currently on loan with Eibar.
Westerveld insists that he has not been iheard anything from the club up

want to hold on to Van der Meyde
|
01
Apr 2004 |
Internazionale technical director Marco Branca has
told former Ajax ace Andy van der Meyde not to fret as he still has a
future at the club. Van der Meyde revealed this week that he was discontent at
being benched for so many matches and that he
would rather play for Ajax on reduced terms than to be continually
sidelined.
On Inters website Branca explained: "It's
a strange year for everybody, him included. As
a club we are aware of this situation and we're also aware of the strength of
van der Meyde, a player we're counting on for the future. So what he said in
Holland isn't very important."

Nistelrooy recovered from injury

Although Manchester United ace Ruud
van Nistelrooy was forced to sit out last night's friendly match against
France, United need not fear for his fitness after Dutch Football Association
revealed that his recovery from a knee injury has been far more rapid than
they had expected.
Van Nistelrooy's injury came to light when he
joined up with the Dutch team on Monday and at first
it was feared that his old knee injury had returned.. However, it now
appears that Van Nistelrooy should be back in action this weekend when United
and Arsenal battle it out for a place in the English FA Cup final.

Davids rubbished AC Milan reports
|
31 Mar 2004 |
Edgar Davids agent Robert Geerlings has rubbished
reports suggesting that
his client has held talks with AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi
and says that there has not
been any contact with AC Milan whatsoever.
Geerlings: "I've
seen the reports about (Milan president) Silvio Berlusconi, but I can assure
you I have never spoken with AC Milan. We're
in no rush and the decision will be made in due course. But Edgar's priority
is to sign with Barcelona. He is very happy there. At
the moment he is only interested in playing well and helping Barca in the
championship."

Henry hails Dennis Bergkamp
|
30 Mar 2004 |
Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has hailed Dennis
Bergkamp and says that the Dutchman is nearly as good as his France team-mate
and World Player of the Year, Zinedine Zidane.
Unfortunately for Holland the 34-year-old player retired from international football four years
ago after netting a record 36 goals for Holland in 79 games. And despite cries
from within Holland for him to make a return to the squad for this year´s
European Championships in Portugal, Bergkamp recently confirmed that he was sticking
by his decision and has ruled out a return.
Yesterday, during a trainings camp in Holland as preparations for their
international friendly against the Netherlands this Wednesday Henry said.
"I've played with so many players. He does not do tricks like Zinedine
Zidane but I don't know if any other player can see the game as well and as
fast as he does. Everyone who has played with Dennis will tell you how
great he is. When Dennis Bergkamp scores, it's not a common goal, it's always
what we call a 'Dennis Bergkamp goal. He's like an example for the young lads.
It's always nice when he's around."

| Chelsea
offer Mario Melchiot new extension
|
30 Mar 2004 |
|
Chelsea are reported to be
having second thoughts as to whether to hold onto Dutch international defender
Mario Melchiot who contract runs out this summer.
Chelsea have always indicated up till now that the Dutchman did not fit into
their plans for next seaso but now seem to have done a complete U-turn and are
now apparently keen to hold onto the former Ajax defender. Chelsea chief Peter
Kenyon is now planning totalks with the 27-year-old player who has
indicated that he wants to stay but will first await until Chelsea reveal who
will be in charge next season, before making a decision.

| Ruud
van Nistelrooy will never leave United
|
29 Mar 2004 |
|
Manchester United striker Ruud van
Nistelrooy says he will never leave Manchester United for another club and has
set his sights on retiring from the game after his United period.
The 27-year-old Holland international explained: "I
have my own philosophy on how I will one day retire and it means I will walk
away from football completely, Becoming
a manager is not an option for me. I
will do it exactly like Eric Cantona when he was at United. It
will be bang, wallop and I'll be gone. I want to do it when I am at the peak
of my career. Playing
blistering football one moment, the next gone forever. I
am not a player who is ready to go to other clubs and play at a lower level.
I have become used to this
fantastic club, so that would be impossible. That is not my style. Either
I am super-motivated to play at the top or I refuse to play. There is no
in-between. I am really hungry to be a success at United, but at times it
takes everything out of me. The
big stars at this club have about seven years at the top and that's what I am
aiming for."

| Hasselbaink
scores hat trick plus 100th goal
|
28 Mar 2004 |
|
Dutch international Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
celebrated his 32nd birthday with a 12 minute master class in goal
scoring.
Hasselbaink, who began on the bench, also netted his 100th premier league goal
to became the third foreign player to claim a century, following Dwight Yorke
and Thierry Henry.
After former Ajax ace Mario Melchiot gave Chelsea a fourth-minute lead,
Chelsea allowed Wolves to get back in the match and snatch an equaliser
through Henri Camara and then take the lead through Terry and Ambrosio.
Trailing 1-2 under pressure coach Claudio Ranieri decided it was time to send
on Hasselbaink for his 200th Premiership appearance - And within minutes
of the Dutchman's arrival Chelsea drew level through Frank Frank Lampard who
smashed home 25 meter goal in the 70th minute.
7 minutes later Chelsea were in front again when Hasselbaink netted his 100th
Premiership goal with a stylish act. Hasselbaink picked up the ball 30
yards from goal and then dribbled through the entire Wolves defence before
driving the ball into the top left-hand corner
10 minutes later the Dutch international bench sitter. picked up a pass from
Damien Duff to notch his second before completing his hat-trick and flattering
the score with an injury time effort.

| Bergkamp
rules out Oranje return
|
28 Mar 2004 |
Former Dutch international top-scorer Dennis
Bergkamp has told the Dutch daily sports newspaper 'AD Sport' that he is
sticking by his decision to stop playing for the Dutch national team 'Oranje'.
In Holland there has been a call for Oranje coach Dick Advocaat to do
everything in his power to persuade the Arsenal striker to make a temporary
return to the national team. However,
it is now apparent that the veteran forward is unlikely to be seen on show
in Portugal this summer.
Bergkamp: "A return has not
been a topic of discussion. The talk of me returning to the Dutch squad had
initially passed me by. My family over
here said they had read about it and heard about it. It is quite funny.
But for me it has never been seriously discussed.
I have made the decision to stop and I stand by
that. It is nothing to do with emotion. At
a certain stage you have to calculate things. What do I have to remove to
remain at the top level? You have to cross
something out and that was the Dutch squad."

| Arsenal
boss takes swipe at Van Nistelrooy
|
27 Mar 2004 |
|
Ahead of this weekend's
showdown between Premier League Giants Manchester United and Arsenal, Gunners
boss Arsene Wenger has taken a swipe at Holland international Ruud van
Nistelrooy.. Wenger is still niggled that several of his players received
bans from the Old Trafford clash earlier this season, after being provoked by
Van Nistelrooy.
Wenger: "We were harshly dealt with because Van Nistelrooy was involved a
lot in provoking - but that's his problem, not ours. Sometimes
the guy who is exposed to the provocation is more harshly punished. At
Arsenal, we feel we are over that now. Where
we have improved is in dealing much better with provocation. And this game is
a good opportunity to show it. I feel that has been a turning point in the
season - them missing a penalty and us not losing. After
having to deal with the situation that followed we have managed to keep going.
We did not behave as we should
have on the pitch that day. We apologised for that, we addressed it and
changed our ways. But
all the changes in our approach have happened naturally be- cause I have
intelligent players who reflected on the situation."

Zenden hoping for Chelsea recall
|
27 Mar 2004 |
Dutch international
midfielder Boudewijn Zenden says he
has not given up hope of returning to Chelsea at the end ofg the season. The
former Barcelona is currently low down the pecking order at Chelsea and has
been loaned out to Middlesbrough this season. Although Zenden has earned
himself a first team place at The Riverside Stadium and is willing to
stay with Steve McClaren's side, he is still hoping that he will recalled to
London where he can play at a higher level. Zenden: "I
have never given up hope of returning to Chelsea. The paperwork says I'll be
a Chelsea player again so I have to think about going back. I
want to play at the highest level. It's good Middlesbrough are in the Uefa
Cup, but it's probable Chelsea will play in the Champions League. We have
won the Carling Cup, but I'm owned by Chelsea so it's not all up to
me."

gutted after UEFA Cup knock-out
|
26 Mar 2004 |
|
Barcelona coach Frank
Rijkaard says he felt gutted after his side crashed
out of the UEFA Cup last night by a stubborn Celtic. The Scottish Premier
League giants, surprised friend and foe two weeks ago after beating the
Catalan outfit 1-0 in Glasgow. However, there were few who thought that Celtic
would be able to retain their slender lead, except for perhaps debutants goalkeeper
David Marshall, who held Rijkaard's millionaires at bay with a number of
world-class saves.
Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard said afterwards, "I feel we have been
deceived, I think we deserved to go through on the effort of my team. The
players gave everything, I cannot fault them. We had over 70 per cent of
possession, dominated the game and allowed our opponents to create very few
chances. But it was important to score and we could not do that tonight. It
will set us back, I know that, but I'm sure the result won't affect our Liga
campaign. We have played with the same attitude and quality as we have done
since Christmas, I'm sure this will not hurt our chances in the Liga. We
had some great chances to score, but I won't talk about bad luck or excuses,
only that we have not fulfilled our objectives tonight. We
gave Celtic one clear chance over the two legs and have paid for it."

| Ricksen
rules out Premiership move
|
25 Mar 2004 |
Fernando Ricksen's agent Henk van Ginkel says that
his client is only prepared to move to Italy or Spain. The Dutch international
defender, whose contract at Rangers runs out next term. has declined
a new two-year extension in favour of playing in a warmer climate.
The 27-year-old has ruled out a move to the Premier League.
Van Ginkel said: "It is true, Fernando has turned down a new contract
with Rangers. He still has a deal for one more year but I don't know what his
plans are. But he will stay, of course, and then we will see what is going to
happen. If Rangers want to make a transfer, then we will see if there is a
possibility because he is only willing to go to Spain or Italy. He doesn't
want to go to England. He just wants to move but it is not because of the
Rangers offer, which was very good. That is not the reason. He just wants to
change. But I don't know if he will leave in the summer, it depends on the
interest of other clubs."

to leave Rangers this summer
|
24 Mar 2004 |
Dutch international
defender Fernando
Ricksen has waved aside a new contract extension offer form Glasgow
Rangers.
Rangers offered the Dutchman the chance to prolong his stay in
Scotland till 2007. However, the 27-year-old player has other plans and is
hoping that when his contract expires at the end of the season he will be inundated
with lucrative offers from Spain or Italy.
In an 'ANP' interview Ricksen's agent Henk van Ginkel explained. "He will
fulfill his contract after which he will leave the club. We were very
satisfied with Rangers new offer. However sometimes you just fancy a move. We
are not in a hurry. We will wait and see what offers come our way.

| Hasselbaink
says Arsenal are arrogant
|
24 Mar 2004 |
|
Dutch international
striker Jimmy Floyd
Hasselbaink says he is convinced that Chelsea will beat Arsenal in their next
confrontation and has accused the 'Gunners'of being
"arrogant". In the English daily newspaper 'Daily Star' Hasselbaink
explained: "It has
been terrible losing to Arsenal so many times since coming to England. But
as far as I am concerned the moment has come for revenge and to break that
record. I am convinced we
are going to beat them at Stamford Bridge and I would give anything to be the
player who scores that goal. Arsenal
will arrive calm and be totally confident that they are superior to us. That
is going to be their greatest mistake. As
far as I am concerned Arsenal seem to have become arrogant by their
success."
Arsenal boss Arsene however claims that Hasselbainks remarks are unjust:
"I don't feel we're arrogant.
But you have to accept what people say. I feel that to repeat performances for
29 games like we have in the Premiership you need humility. If you think you
can walk on water, you will sink very quickly. Before,
we did not know how to win in Europe. But our confidence has never been as
high as it is now. Our
basis is quite strong but football is not predictable. Chelsea are a good side
and we need a top-class performance. We
are favourites because we have beaten Chelsea before but you could say there
was no pressure on us because we were 99 per cent out of the competition.
It is the biggest fortnight
in Arsenal's history. There are not many times when you are playing for the
league, you are in the Champions League quarter-finals and the semi-final of
the FA Cup."

poised to ink new Rangers deal
|
23 Mar 2004 |
Despite Dutch
Fernando
Ricksen being handed handed a four-match ban
by the Scottish FA after being found guilty of elbow-jabbing
Hibernian starlet Derek Riordan and despite his shaky
reputation both on and off field, the Holland international
defender looks poised to ink a new Rangers deal. In an interview in the
Scottish daily mail, Ricksen's agent Henk
van Ginkel said: "Rangers have made Fernando a good offer to stay
at the club until 2007 but I can't say yet what his decision will be. I have been over to Glasgow
to speak to him - that's only natural with clients. But
we have only had a brief chat about it and we must wait and see. It will be
decided in a matter of weeks rather than months however. A
quick decision is the best scenario for both parties."

Edgar Davids agent Richard Geerlings has informed
Italian website 'Calciomercato.com' that he knows of AC Milan's interest for
his client but insists that Davids would prefer to remain at Barcelona.
Geerlings:
"I know of the interest of Milan for Davids, they were interested in the
player weeks ago. Milan
was in contact with me from that period. Davids, however, is very content with
Barcelona, the priority is for Barcelona, since they also have an option for

reputation by playing on for too long.
In an interview on TV station Canal Pus, the French coach said:
'You have to be careful that you don't put your reputation on the line by
playing on for too long"
Wenger continued: 'I
really don't know how his future looks. At the moment he is playing fantastic
and if he continues to play like this I would like him to extend his stay. It
is absolutely amazing what he does. However, we do no know how he will be
playing at the end of the season. We will have to talk with Dennis soon and
exchange ideas. He will have to tell us exactly what he has planned in
mind and then I will tell him what I think."Will will make the decision
at the end of the season."
Bergkamp has
already indicated that he will retire at the end of the season if he fails to
secure a new Arsenal extension.

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard
insists that the club have not given up on trying to hold onto Edgar Davids
and says that he is still in talks with the Dutch international midfielder
about a permanent deal. Davids,
who is currently on loan from Juventus is
reported to be close to inking a deal with Champion League holders AC Milan
but Rijkaard has dismissed the claims.
Rijkaard: "I have
spoken with Davids and he has said to me that he is very happy here. He's
proud to play with this team, even if he has confirmed to me of having many
offers for the next season. Edgar
has not spoken to me about the existence of an agreement with Milan but, I
repeat, only about the fact that he has received many proposals."

Frank Rijkaard's Barcelona
booked their 9th consecutive League win against Real Sociedad yesterday and
now move to within

Brazilian ace Ronaldinho grabbed the points for the Catalan outfit with a last
minute strike.
Afterwards, coach Frank Rijkaard said: "We never gave up, we fought to
the end in a game which was very difficult. I'm
delighted to see the boys rewarded for their efforts.
I'm delighted for the
player, the team and the fans. It has also been Ronaldinho's birthday today.
Ronaldinho has invented a play, forced a mistake and obtained a great goal
through his own efforts. He is very happy about it all, after a play of great
class."

Makaay scores beauty in 1-1 draw
|
21 Mar 2004 |
|
Dutch international reserve striker Roy Makaay
seems to score in just about every Bundesliga match in which he plays.
However, his new club Bayern Munchen are not having one of their best seasons
this term and that often means that Makaay's goals are fruitless.
In Bayern's away match to relegation candidates Hertha BSC Makaay netted
a beautiful goal when picking up the ball on his own half and then soling
through Hertha's entire defense before lashing out a 18 meter rocket
shot.
However, just before the final whistle, Bayern conceded a penalty that
Marcelinho neatly rounded off for the final 1-1 scoreline.

| Brilliant
Bergkamp in record breaking game
|
21 Mar 2004 |
|
Arsenal have booked themselves
a place in the records books after equaling Leeds' top-flight record of 29
games unbeaten.
Goals from Robert Pires and Dennis Bergkamp underlined the Gunners' first-half
domination against Bolton.
However, despite Arsenal's first half dominance Bolton
made sure that were forced to earn the record with a spirited second
half display. Arsenal also broke their own Premiership and club record by
going 31 League games unbeaten - a run that began last May.
Former Dutch international striker Dennis Bergkamp was back in the Gunners'
attack after a rib injury- and once he displayed that it is time for Holland
coach Dick Advocaat to try and persuade Bergkamp to make a temporary return to
the natcion team during the Eurpean Championships this summer in Portugal.
On a rain drenched pitch Arsenal went ahead just after the quarter-hour mark.
Edu played the ball forward to Bergkamp, who laid it off to Pires. The
Frenchman curled his shot inside the far post, giving Jaaskelainen no chance.
Bergmap turned from provider into scorer when Henry raced onto a Pires pass
down the left wing and crossed.
Although it was a difficult ball to control, Bergkamp showed his uncanny
class to sweep the ball into the net with a first-time volley that oozed great
technique.

de Boer scores- Ronald breaks nose
|
21 Mar 2004 |
|
Scottish premier league giants Glasgow Rangers have
been dealt a blow after seeing Dutch midfielder Ronal de Boer leave the pitch
this weekend in their 4-0 hammering of Dundee with a broken nose.
Although de Boer is now
doubtful for next week’s game, Rangers manager McLeish is confident the
Dutchman will be able to face Celtic.
McLeish: :
“Ronald got whacked in the box and was a wee bit concussed so he had to come
off. He had
started the game very brightly so it was a pity to lose him so early.
Ronald is probably out of
Tuesday’s game at home to Dunfermline but I would imagine he would be okay
for next week’s game against Celtic. Rangers
goals came in bursts of two with Peter Lovenkrands and Frank de Boer netting
either side of the break and Gavin Rae and Steven Thompson making sure near
the end.
Frank de Boer sent a header looping towards an unprotected goal and
Lovenkrands made sure by blasting the ball into the net from inches out.
It took Rangers just three
minutes to double their lead after the restart when Frank de Boer netted
direct a 25 meter free-kick Rae
made it 3-0 in the 81st minute with a thumping drive from just inside the box.
Youngster Alan Hutton - who
was named man of the match - then crossed for Thompson to made it four two
minutes later after a crafty flick from Michael Mols.

Dutch international midfielder Edgar
Davids has stated that he will stay with Barcelona if they make him the club's
highest paid player. The
Juventus midfielder is currently on loan at Nou Camp until the end of the
season, afterwhich he will become a free agent and a target for European top
clubs.
Although it was generally believed that when the loan spell at the Nou Camp
ends in June Davids would ink a new deal, now that he is demanding 3 million
euros-a-season to sign with Barca, which is a half million euros higher
Ronaldinho is currently earning, it remains to be seen if a new extension will
be inked: Davids: "My
priority to sign with Barcelona," he said yesterday. But I must say I
have received interest from many clubs."

| Ricksen
adds more fuel to bad reputation
|
17
Mar 2004 |
Dutch international
defender Fernando Ricksen has been handed a four-match ban by the Scottish FA after
being found guilty of elbow-jabbing Hibernian starlet Derek Riordan.
However, although the Scottish FA chiefs have slapped a two-game ban on
Ricksen and added a further 12 points to his disciplinary tally, ruling him
out for two more games, he will still be eligable to play against arch rivals
Celtic in the third Old Firm game of the season.
The Scottish FA do not agree with Ricksen's claim that his action was only
reckless but instead have ruled that the defender’s swipe at Riordan during
the CIS Cup semi-final at Hampden last month was an act of violence
Ricksen, who had already been fined £10,000 by Gers boss Alex McLeish for the
offence is not intending to appeal.
This
is not the first time that Ricksen has been found guilty of violent acts
and his aggressive act has now long succumbed Edgar bulldog Davids reputation.
Ricksen arrival at the court hearing also made somewhat of an impact. As he
arrived at the 30-minute hearing at Hampden, the Ibrox star almost ran into
more trouble — when he narrowly avoided smashing his 60,000 euros BMW saloon
into another car. Ricksen, who also owns a
150,000 euros Ferrari, was only given his driving licence back two weeks ago
after a ban for drink-driving.

last night that he will be handing in his notice with Saudi Arabian outfit Al

Prince Bin Mosaed's
decision to leave the club comes after continual criticism: De Mos 'The

If he leaves, then I have to be a man and take the same decision."

Davids from bulldog to hero

Mar 2004 |

Dutch international midfielder Eidgar Davids has
stolen the hearts of nearly all of Spain. The Barcelona bulldog jumped
to the defence of a supporter who ran onto the pitch during the Catalan
outfit's away to match to Murcia with a naked torso bearing the slogan
'No al terrorisomo'. Just as the police were about to lay into the
demonstrator, Davids stood between the demonstrator and the police and
protected the man from the police's onslaught. Under a standing ovation from
the crowd Davids then guided the protestor off the field in an peaceful
manner.
Barcelona played the rest of the match out under protest from coach Rijkaard
who stated: "Football should be second place during moments like
this"

league wins has led Dutch international winger Marc Overmars to boldly state
that the Catalan outfit can lift this year's Spanish league title. Overmars,
who has been in blinding form these this season said:
"Madrid plays (this week) at Atletico and they still have to play us.
The game at the Bernabéu will be
most important, since we could be just three or four points away and put more

| Sir
Alex worried for V. Nistelrooy burn-out
|
16
Mar 2004 |
Manchester United boss fears
that Dutch international striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is suffering from
burn-out, while the Dutchman's new up-front striking partner Louis Saha’s
heel injury has left him limping ahead of next week’s Champions League
return against Porto.
Van
Nistelrooy recently vented his anger at being left out of the United
line-up for last Saturday's 1-1 draw at Fulham.
Sir Alex claimed that Van Nistelrooy was left out because he was too tired and
needed a rest, whereas Van Nistelrooy insisted that he was feeling fit and
raring to go.
And boss Ferguson admitted: “Ruud said he did not feel sharp in the first
leg against Porto. So I decided on a bit of freshness up front on Saturday.
“Ruud has carried the burden up front a long
while. It is time we looked at that.”

to offer 35 million for Van Nistelrooy
|
16
Mar 2004 |
According to reports in the English daily newspaper
'The Sun' Spanish giants Real Madrid are poised to lodge a 35 million Euro
offer for Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Although the
Dutch international has just inked a new five year extension there are signs
that his
relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson is on tenterhooks - And with
United having been knocked out of the Champions League and their chances of
prolonging their League title reduced to zero, Van Nistelrooy looks set to end
this season without any silverware.
United are still in the race for the FA Cup
but face a formidable task against Arsenal in semi-finals.
Real’s coach and former United No 2 Carlos Queiroz has always been a big
admirer of the 27-year-old and would like to see the Dutchman join Real,
especially now that Arsenal's French international Thierry
Henry has declined the Spaniards advances.

Frank Rijkaard's Barcelona
booked their eighth consecutive league win last night as they defeated Real

super-star Ronaldinho struck for the visitors and coach Frank Rijkaard said
afterwards, "It wasn't our best performance of the season, but the
victory is important in terms of our Champions League ambitions. Scoring
first was the key, though even then we did not control the flow of the game.
At the break we had a chat and we played much better in the second-half.
Murcia tried everything they
could to put us off our game, but luckily the early goal helped us settle
down. We didn't play the best game of the season, but I'm satisfied with the
victory."

Boer urges Rangers to hold on to twins
|
15
Mar 2004 |
|
Dutch international midfielder Ronald
de Boer has urged his Rangers boss Alex McLeish not to allow their experienced
players to leave the club and has urged McLeish to think twice before ditching
him or his Twin brother at the end of the season. De Boer:
"The future is good for Rangers because we have a lot of good kids here.
But you have to find the mix with experience. You
can't expect young guys to play 50 games a season all at a high level. You
can't rely only on the young players. But I don't know what the manager has in
mind for next year. He may need experienced players like myself and Frank
because the youngsters won't win the title back on their own. Nothing
has been decided with myself and Frank and the talking has to start. I
will see what I want from my future because I still don't know. Obviously you
have to see what Rangers want too and at the moment there has been no offer
from the club. I hope
Rangers have something in mind and I won't commit myself elsewhere until I
hear what they say - I don't want to leave and then regret it straight away.
I would like to leave Rangers on a
high and obviously that can't happen this season. Frank
is here now and both of us have a lot to think about. But
Rangers have to find the right balance in the team - you must have older
heads."

12
Mar 2004 |
|
Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard was not disheartened
by Barcelona´s first defeat in 10 games and praised his side's resilience in
their 1-0 defeat in the UEFA Cup tie against Celtic in which Barcelona were
reduced to nine men.
Rijkaard. "I think there was a little
bit of nerves but a game like this is very tense and we have to learn from it.
The players felt the referee had made some strange
decisions but that doesn't mean you have to over-react because that damages
the team. But the players who stayed out
there still did a wonderful job and now we have 90 minutes in Barcelona to
turn the game around."

| Kluivert
fails to score as Celtic beat Barca
|
12
Mar 2004 |
Dutch international striker Patrick Kluivert
failed to keep his promise to score against Celtic in the UEFA Cup,
although the Dutchman still has the return in which to rectify his mistake.
A solitary strike from Alan Thompson on the hour
mark was enough to send the Catalan outfit home with a somewhat unfortunate
1-0 defeat. Celtic´s he goal came
when Stilian Petrov crossed from to Barcelona target Henrik Larsson
who escaped the attentions of the excellent Carles Puyol to head down
for Thompson - who lashed the ball home from close range.
Barcelona - who were reduced to nine men, can only blame themselves
for the defeat after missing a number of opportunities to level the
score.
Although Barcelona were the better of the two sides, Celtic´s performance
was certainly not below par and the Catalan outfit will have to be a lot
sharper in Nou Camp if they intend to progress to the next stages of the
UEFA Cup.

| Rijkaard
to decide whether to buy Larson
|
11 Mar 2004 |
|
Although Barcelona President Joan Laporta has
confirmed that the Spanish giants are considering a summer swoop Celtic
goal-machine Henrik Larson, coach Frank Rijkaard has stated that he will have
the final say on whether the club make a move for Henrik Larsson.
Laporta has also confirmed that with money not playing an issue in the
transfer only a green-light from Rijkaard will be needed for them to swoop for
the Swede.
Laporta said: "It all depends on the coach. We've talked about Larsson
and other very good players in the European and world market. And Barcelona
are a very strong club financially so it's not a question of money. Larsson is
a very good player but we have very good players in his position and we are a
very strong team. But it depends on whether the coach can incorporate him into
the team. "It doesn't depend on the two games between the clubs. We know
Larsson is a very strong footballer. We've not been talking about one player,
we've been talking about a very strong Celtic team and it will be a very
competitive match. We know Celtic are a very good side but we trust in our
team and we will try and do our best. But Celtic have won a lot of home games
this season and it will be very difficult for us."

| Cocu
warns Barca of Larson threat
|
11 Mar 2004 |
|
Dutch international all rounder
Philip Cocu has warned his teammates to pay special attention to former
Feyenoord ace Henrik Larsson in their UEFA
Cup confrontation with Scottish Premier League giants Celtic. The
Barcelona captain has often played against Larson when both players were active
in Holland and this has led the Dutchman to issue a warning to his teammates
saying:: "Their danger man is definitely Henrik Larsson but they have many
other good players and we will have to be at our best to get a good result. The
most important thing is that we score an away goal to put us in a great
position for the home leg. I played against
Larsson in Holland when he was at Feyenoord and know what a great striker he
is. I have heard reports Barcelona are interested in signing him at the end of
the season and it will therefore be a special game for him. He'll
have an extra incentive to perform well and impress us but hopefully we can
stop him doing that."

| Hasselbaink
wants Chelsea exit
|
10 Mar 2004 |
Dutch international striker Jimmy
Floyd Hasselbaink says that he is sick and tired of Chelsea's rotation policy
at Stamford Bridge and wants to leave the club. However, Hasselbaink clains
that Chelsea intend holding him to his contract that runs out in 2005. On
Sky Sports Hasselbaink explained:
"I have stated that I prefer a move away, We don't have to compete with
each other. He (manager
Claudio Ranieri) is substituting a lot. If
you play well, you could still be on the bench in the next match. The result is
you cannot get into a rhythm, and you see that now. I
have said I would like to leave the club if I can't play every week. However,
they don't want to co-operate."

| Van
Bronckhorst says Larsson will join Barca
|
09
Mar 2004 |
Barcelona's on loan fullback
Gio van Bronckhorst says he is convinced that his former Celtic teammate Henrik
Larsson will move to the Nou Camp next season.
Van Bronckhorst:
"I keep asking Henrik when he's coming to join me at Barcelona but he is
keeping his cards close to his chest. He
says he doesn't know what is happening although I think he would be keen to
join me. I believe he would be a fantastic signing for any team in Spain.
Henrik still has at least two or
three years left at the top level and he deserves a move to a big club. He
has been one of the best strikers in Europe for the past five or six years and
he still has plenty to offer. If it is Barca or any other Spanish team I know
for certain he would be a valuable addition. His
goalscoring record speaks for itself and I know he would score a lot in the
Primera Liga. The UEFA
Cup draw has given him a platform to show what a great player he is. I want him
to do well but I don't want him to knock Barca out of the competition."

insists that his dispute with new teammate Frank de Boer is now over.
Berg said: "The quotes attributed to me were correct but the impression
can be wrong. It was not a
vendetta with Frank - I was just frustrated, and I had spoken with him before
the game to let him know it was nothing personal between us. The
manager and I also discussed it and I have nothing else to say on the matter. I
am more disappointed we are out of the Scottish Cup because I came to Rangers
for this year to try and win trophies and it has not happened. It
was also the last chance in my career to win silverware, so that is very
disappointing."

Arsenal outcast Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who is
currently on loan at Barcelona, is out of action for the coming three wekks

| Kluivert
vows to score against Celtic
|
08 Mar 2004 |
Barcelona's run of 9 consecutive
wins has led Dutch international striker Patrick Kluivert to boldly state that
he has already written off UEFA Cup opponents Celtic.
The Dutch record international goalscorer also insists that the Celtic defense
will not be able to contain him and he insists that he wil score against the
Scottish Premier League giants.
Kluivert: "I will score
against Celtic. Barcelona
are on their way to the quarter-finals and I think we will play Roma. It's
disappointing because that would have been a good final. Larsson
is a good player but our defence is effective and will deal with him. Celtic's
defence, however, is perfect for my style. That's why I'm confident of
scoring."

|
07 Mar 2004 |
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was displeased at being
dropped Sometimes managers and
players disagree and I was disappointed because I always want to play.
It's not nice to be rested but I suppose deep
down I agree with the boss. I'm just happy
that we are in the semis because this was a massive game for us. We needed
to change things round after a bad spell in recent weeks and we have done
that."
United boss Sir Alex "Van Nistelrooy picks himself most of the

great. He could have scored four and
that’s what you expect of Ruud.

Nistelrooy clashes with Sir Alex
|
06 Mar 2004 |
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who recently clashed with
Holland coach Dick Advocaat after being substituted when
Holland lost 3-1 to the Czech Republic in a Euro 2004 qualifier,
has now clashed with Manchester United
boss Sir Alex Ferguson for the same reason. Van
Nistelrooy vented his anger at being left out of the United line-up
for last Saturday's 1-1 draw at Fulham.
Sir Alex claims that Van Nistelrooy was left out because he was too tired
and needed a rest, whereas Van Nistelrooy says that he was feeling fit and
raring to go. Ryan Giggs, who was also
benched at Fulham, echoed van Nistelrooy's disappointment but insisted the
United players must trust Fergie's judgment. "I know the manager was
criticised for leaving myself and Ruud out but, as I've said before, the
gaffer knows best," said Giggs. "I respect the decisions that are
made.''
|
| Cruijff
says United rely too much on Ruud
|
06 Mar 2004 |
|
Dutch legendary footballer and trainer
Johan Cruijff has warned Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson that he is
far too dependant on Dutch international striker Ruud van Nistelrooy. Since
Van Nistelrooy stopped scoring three weeks ago, United have He
lives to score goals and he comes from a line of brilliant centre-forwards
like Gerd Muller and Uwe Seeler. You could say Ruud is the ultimate striker.
He’s someone who
doesn’t need a particularly good technique to do what he does
instinctively — score goals. But
if you base everything on him, then you will end up with problems.
Just as you depend
on his goal-scoring runs, you also become dependent on whether he is or is
not in the team. Let’s
put it like this — what if he is out of the team for five or six games
injured, suspended or things like that? Then
your football plan is in real bother if all you have is this over-dependence
on getting the ball to a free-scoring ‘No 9’.”

Although reports in the Spanish and British media
have suggested that Chelsea´s Dutch international defender Mario Melchiot
whose contract with the
Blues expires in the summer, is
being targeted by Valencia, the Spanish outfit have issued a firm
denial. Valencia sporting
director Jesus Garcia Pitarch said. "Valencia
is not negotiating with Melchiot or Chelsea. We have more pressing

we at Valencia know who we want. We

| Fulham
not at fault in Collin John case
|
03
Mar 2004 |
The Dutch FA (KNVB) have confirmed that Fulham
have not broken any rules when attracting Twente striker Collin John
to the club during the January transfer period. The KNVB are currently
investigating John's move from FC Twente
as they did not negotiate with his unlicensed agent.
At first the Dutch FA were threatening to take the case to court because the
deal was arranged by the player's unlicensed agent,
former Ipswich player Romeo Zondervan. And with Fulham having swoops for Steve Marlet and Edwin van
der Sar both being investigated last year, the Dutch FA were rightly
concerned .
KNVB spokesman Frank Huizenga said: "We
have questions about the agent and have put them to Twente. We've asked them what happened in John's
move and are waiting for their answers. However, it seems Twente talked directly
to Fulham, rather than through Zondervan - who is unlicensed - and that
would mean they acted correctly. If there was a mistake, we're not sure
whether it would be us or the English FA who would deal with it, as John is
now playing in England."

"It is out of my hands. We will have to wait and see. We'll think about

John's transfer to be investigated
|
02
Mar 2004 |
Former Twente starlet Collins John's transfer to
Fulham is being investigated by the Dutch FA. According to reports, the
Liberian born Dutchman's agent Romeo Zondervan, is not properly registered
with FIFA and therefore does not have permission to act on the the striker's
behalf.
The Dutch FA (KNVB ) are now to look closely into the deal which saw the
Ajax and PSV target move to Fulham
from FC Twente on a four-year deal during the winter transfer
window.
KNVB spokesman Frank Huizenga explained: "If rules have been broken
then it is a case for the prosecutor,"

to wait patiently

01
Mar 2004 |
Dutch international fullback
Mario Melchiot is reported to have told his representatives to stop
sending out feelers to Chelsea as to what their intentions are with him next
season. The Chelsea man is out of contract this summer but is keen to
prolong his stay with Chelsea as wants to stay focused on helping
Chelsea in the Champions League and the Premiership race. Melchiot
has been linked with a return to Ajax but could well opt for a move to
Middlesbrough or Birmingham City, who are both reported to be interesting in
securing his services.
News that that Chelsea could perform a mini-clearout at the end of the
season has alerted Manchester City boss Keegan, who is particularly keen on
fullback Mario Melchiot who would fit into City's wage budget.

| Zenden's
Middlesbrough win first ever prize
|
01
Mar 2004 |
Dutch internationals Boudewijn
Zenden and George Boetang could well do well to remain at Premier League
outfit Middlesbrough now that the club's chairman Steve Gibson has predicted
a golden era for the club after lifting the Carling Cup yesterday.
However Bolton boss Allardyce has blamed
referee Riley for their defeat after having missed seeing Boudewijn Zenden
hitting a penalty with BOTH feet. He
rapped: “When Zenden took their penalty he played it with his left foot
first and then hit it with his right. That should be an indirect free-kick
to us.”
FIFA Law 14 says the penalty taker must not play the ball a second time
until it has touched another player. But
Riley, who will be England’s only ref at Euro 2004, allowed the goal. That
put Boro two up inside seven minutes, following Joseph- Desire Job’sr.
Middlesbrough boss
Gibson, "We got the result we wanted - it's a dream for all the town
and the players. It's
a great moment for us - we've all worked really hard to get here and we've
really enjoyed today. This is a relief for us. It's been 128 years in the
making and we're going to enjoy every minute of this. Middlesbrough
supporters have had a lot of frustrations but we've ended it today and I
really believe the club can kick on from now."

Dutch international reserve striker Roy
Makaay bagged his 13th competition goal of the season for Bayern Munchen in
their 2-0 win over Vfl Wolfsburg. The Dutchman. who has been nickname
'Tor Phantom' ( ghost striker) seems to have a tendency to be
invisible in matches but nonetheless always pops up when you least expect it
and deliver a killers finish, as was the case in the 11th minute of
yesterday's game. Schweinsteiger complimented the scoring for the Germans 15
minutes before the final whistle.

| Hasselbaink
says it would be a pity to leave
|
29
Feb 2004 |
In the English daily newspaper 'the Sun', Dutch international
striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink says that he is disappointed that Chelsea
have not declared their intentions as to whether or not he will be
offered a contract extension when his current deal runs out this summer.
Hasselbaink:
"It would be a pity if I have to leave because this is a magnificent
club and I love it here. I adore English football and I am not looking to
get a move. But if the club want me to go, I will have no say in it and
hopefully another door wouldfor me. I don't think we need any more
players. But I won't be surprised if they buy others at the end of the
season. "If the boss said to me that next season he is going to pick
the best and leave out the ones not doing so well, I would not be afraid of
the competition. OK,
if Ronaldo or Thierry Henry comes, I would have to think about it. Yet if
the manager says the same four strikers as we have now are staying, I'm not
going to want to go. It would be all about scoring and I am confident on
that front."
Hasselbaink, who was disappointed
at being left on the bench for the midweek Champions League 1-0 win in
Stuttgart, fears that Adrian Mutu and Hernan Crespo are edging him out of
the team. Hasselbaink
"I expected to play from the start and was frustrated when I didn't.
At this moment it's difficult to speak
about the situation. But this has been the hardest thing for me this season.
Ask any striker and they will all say
they need to develop a rhythm from playing games and scoring goals. But if
you are left out you have to start all over again. It's
quite difficult to live with and it's hard to form a bond when you play with
someone else up front every week. But
that's the policy and we will see at the end of the season if it has worked
or not. It's not up to me. I am
part of the squad and I have to do the best for our team."

| Wouters
declines offer from the Dutch FA
|
28
Feb 2004 |
Former Ajax trainer Jan Wouters has declined an
offer from the Dutch FA (KNVB) to assist Holland's trainers-duo Dick
Advocaat and Willem van Hanegem during the European Championships in
Portugal this summer. Dick Advocaat asked Wouters to join his team on
a temporary basis and was also hoping that Wouters would be willing to take
over the Holland Under-19's squad that were formerly trained by Ruud Gullit,
who has agreed to become Feynoord's new trainer this summer.
However, Wouters, who is currently assistant trainer at Glasgow Rangers says
that the job does not suit him becuase he would miss the challenge of
day-today coaching.
Wouters: "I want to stand on the pitch every day"
Wouters also added that he was in his element in Scotland and is intending
to ink a new extension with the Scottish Premier League giants.

| jWesterveld
out of action for rest of season
|
28
Feb 2004 |
Dutch international reserve goalkeeper Sander
Westerveld looks as if he will have to face a lengthy period on the
sidelines.
Last Wednesday Westerveld broke his little finger during the Champions
League match against French outfit Olympique Lyon. However, after
hospital tests it now appears that the Real Sociedad keeper could well be
out of action for at least three months or perhaps even the rest of the
season, which could well cost him his place in the Dutch squad during this
year's European Championships in Portugal.
Westerveld: ''I am very disappointed. Medical tests have revealed a
complicate break that will have to be operated on. My finger resembles a car
that has been written off in an accident."

books sixth consecutive win
|
27
Feb 2004 |

Frank Rijkaards
Barcelona booked their sixth win in succession last nigh
after beating Danish outfit Bronby 1-0 in the UEFA Cup.
Ronaldinho's goal midway through the second-half also
means that Barcelona have one foot in the next stages
although Rijkaard has warned his team not to be too
complacent during the return.
Rijkaard "We can be content with the game that we have
played, I believe that we deserved a victory, but we must
maintain the same mentality in the return match, it is
important to give it everything in both legs. It
is not possible to think that it is all over, we have only
taken the first step. At
the break, we believed we were playing very well, but that
we needed to score a goal - and so it was. Ronaldinho
was spectacular, but the whole team did well, particularly
Thiago Motta."

Boer hails teammate Hamed Namouchi
|
27
Feb 2004 |
|
Dutch
international midfielder Ronald De Boer has hailed French
starlet Hamed Namouchi. The Rangers playmaker is impressed
at how Namouchi has edged his way into the first team squad
saygin: "A young player with a lot of quality who has
recently broken into the first-team squad is Hamed Namouchi.
He is strong,
has good technique and is good in the air. He is a very good
talent but he is sometimes a little nonchalant. He
is very young and he will get that out of his system.
I also had that
when I was young. It's something you can work on. When
he is crossing the ball or finishing off a chance, it can
look like he is not concentrating fully. I
see Hamed chasing people and getting the ball from the m
with determination and power, and then he switches off a
little bit when he has the ball. Distribution
is important and sometimes all the effort he has put in is
lost and he gives the ball away too easily.

| Aston
Villa extension for goalkeeper Postma
|
26
Feb 2004 |
Dutch goalkeeper Stefan Postma has
been offered a new contract extension with Premier League outfit
Aston Villa.
Although the former De Graafschap ace still has two years
remaining on his existing deal and despite having only managed
two Premiership appearances this term, the club are keen to
retain the reserve goalkeeper and the 27-year-old has been
informed by club chairman Doug Ellis that they are confident his
long-term future will be resolved shortly. Postma:
"I am well aware that I'm in a great position at the moment.
Of course in an ideal world I'd want
to play more matches. But the rest of my life is absolutely
brilliant. I am very settled
at Villa, I have made some great friends, I have a great house,
nice car. What more could I possibly want? Everybody
wants to stay at a winning club. The players are very upbeat
about everything and the dressing room is much better than it
was last year. I've had a
brief chat with the chairman and am waiting for the club to get
back, but I don't think there will be any problems."

|
25
Feb 2004 |
|
Dutch international goalkeeper
Edwin van der Sar played a heroic role for Fulham with a
number of incredible saves to help the London outfit an FA Cup
quarter-final place.
Van der Sar's performances in the FA Cup fifth-round tie
ensured the Cottagers a replay thanks to a string of fine
saves.
Despite West Ham piling on the pressure for the majority of
the first act, the Dutchman ensured his side went in at
the break on level terms after stopping a rocket shot
from David Connolly and pulling off a fantastic save
fantastic save to tip Harewood's vicious shot over the
crossbar midway through the half.
In the second act Van der sar continued to impress
before
Fulham made the Hammers pay for their inability to convert
their domination into goals with three goals in a devastating
final quarter hour. First Brian McBride, then Barry Hayles and
finally Luis Boa Morte scored the goals to set up a
quarter-final tie at Manchester United the weekend after next.

| Makaay
scores against Real Madrid
|
25
Feb 2004 |
Dutch international reserve striker
Roy Makaay was once again on target for German giants Bayern
Munchen in Champions League match against Real Madrid.
However an enormous blunder by Bayern Munchen goalkeeper Oliver
Kahn saw the Spanish giants clinch an undeserved draw.
Roy Makaay nearlyd the score shortly after the interval
when heading a Ze Roberto cross, just centimeters wide.
However, in the 75th minute Makaay made amends when rounding odd
a Casillas cross with a powerful header.
Just a few minutes later Real found themselves unexpectedly
level. The Spaniards earned a free-kick some way out and there
appeared to be no danger when Carlos struck a low shot that
lacked his usual power. But Kahn miscued and let the ball squirm
under his body into the bottom right corner of the net.

United goal-machine Ruud van Nistelrooy has attributed the
club’s shaky performances of the past few weeks to the loss
of David Beckham to Real Madrid.
Van Nistelrooy:
"Becks is a missed here at
United as a player as well as a person. From what I've seen of

barrier, it's not easy for a player to make a move like that.

Former
Twente starlet Collins John has revealed that Manchester City
had been trying to secure his services long before he decided
to swap the Enschede outfit for Edwin van der Sar's Fulham.
John also revealed that Dutch giants Ajax and PSV were
also keen to sign. John
"Manchester City had wanted me for a couple of months - I
knew that. And I also knew
that Ajax and PSV were interested, but I think that was
dependent on other strikers moving on from those two clubs.
I just had a good feeling about
Fulham. Manchester City are much lower in the league and
Fulham are doing very well this season. And also Edwin called
me about two or three times and told me about Fulham and what
a good club it was and that really helped. It's good that
there are a couple of Dutch players here - it's helped me
settle in."

wants new Arsenal extension
|
24 Feb 2004 |
Former Dutch
international Dennis Bergkamp has indicated that he is not
ready to hang up his boots yet and says he wants to extend his
contract at Arsenal with another season.
Bergkamp says he is delighted that his body can still easily
cope with the strain of day to day training and he is
convinced that he is fit enough for a new campaign next term,
saying:
"The way I feel now I don't want to stop. I
feel great. The older you get, the fewer runs you can make.
That's why it's fantastic for me to play with Thierry [Henry]

Arsene Wenger added, "Sometimes you think a player is

| Rijkaard's
Barcelona continue to impress
|
23 Feb 2004 |
Barcelona
continue to impress with yet another excellent victory over
Valencia at the Mestalla.
The Catalans
came in to the match full of confidence after four wins in a
row, and Ronaldinho almost caught Cañizares off guard with a
long free kick in the first half. Saviola had a goal disallowed
for a borderline offside a few minutes later, and the home
side's only real chance came when Xavi headed Baraja's effort
off the line on the stroke of half time. The visitors kept up
the pressure after the break and got their reward when
substitute Gerard headed a corner down into the net with a
quarter of an hour to go. And when Carboni was sent off for a
second bookable offence soon afterwards the match was over.
A
disappointed Valencia coach Rafa Benitez said afterwards,
"For me, Barcelona has had control of the ball, but if we
analyze goal chances we have had two or three to put to us
ahead. We have played with too much anxiety. We
needed to be calmer in possession. But if we had played an
opponent of lesser quality I am sure we would have won
today."

now making haste to tie Ricksen to the club for a few more
seasons. Gers boss Alex McLeish said, "I believe that the
club have started talking - that talks have resumed. Of
course he is a player I would like to keep. He is a good player

Holland
international midfielder Clarence Seedorf is over the moon that
Jaap Stam is joining AC Milan and believes that with the arrival

will surpass the power of European giants Real Madrid. Seedorf:
"He is the best defender Holland has produced since Ruud

support for banned Rio Ferdinand
|
23 Feb 2004 |
In an interview in the Brittish
Sunday newspaper 'Sunday Mirror' Dutch international defender
Jaap Stam says he supports Manchester United defender Rio
Ferdinand who has recieved a lengthy ban for drug abuse.
Stam, who himself was forced to sit on the sidelines for a five
month period after after traces of banned drug nandrolone were
found in his system in NOvember 2001.
Stam: "Of course I feel
for him because I know it will be very hard, like it was for me.
I don't want to give him any advice
because I remember when I was in that period I didn't want to
have advice from anybody. It's
something you have to deal with yourself and cope with yourself.
You are very much alone. But
it's not going to be easy for him because you cannot really get
away from it. Every week you
see your team playing and you are sitting in the stands watching
and you don't understand what has happened. You still can't
really believe what is going on. You just think, 'Why
me?'"

23 Feb 2004 |
Dutch defender Arjan
de Zeeuw who joined newly promoted Premier League outfit
Portsmouth this summer, says he was more impressed with
Liverpool Michael Owen's pace when he was a youngster than he is
now. De Zeeuw:
"I played against Owen when he was much younger, and maybe

trouble with Owen is that even when he doesn't seem to be in the
game he can still be a threat. He just needs a sniff of a chance
to punish you."

| Van
der Sar writes off Fulham's Euro dream
|
23 Feb 2004 |
Dutch international
goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar believes there is no way Fulham can
qualify for Europe through the league. Van der Sar: "We had
a bright start to the campaign but from December on we have lost
too many points to be challenging. I
know we are still there on 35 points and near the Champions
League places but there are many teams coming into form at the
moment to challenge us. At
Fulham, you are never going to win the league, so the only thing
you can aim for is qualifying for Europe, getting into the
Champions League or winning one of the cups. The
Carling Cup we lost in the first round so the only other left
for us was the FA Cup. If we can get past West Ham and then
Manchester United, we have a chance. It's
a chance to go all the way. In my first year we reached the
semi-finals against Chelsea. Of
course playing United away is not the easiest draw - but we have
beaten them there before.

and therefore, wants to win and he has done well to choose to come
to Milan. The
fact he has chosen AC Milan is a great thing for everyone
connected to the club - right through to the president."

|
17
Feb 2004 |
Dutch international
bulldog and Juventus midfielder Edgar Davids says he is very happy
at Barcelona and given the chance he would not hesitate in inking a
deal with the Catalan outfit saying that he would sign outright.
After Barcelona's 3-=1 win over rivals Atletico Madrid on Sunday,
the Dutchman said, "I feel very happy here. If I had to renew
my contract today, I would do it, but it depends on the two clubs.
Hopefully it can happen,
I could follow in the footsteps of Michael Laudrup after his time in
Italy. The
players, the public, the people on the street... all deal with me
very well; they show their affection to me and I have great desire
to give it back to them."

| Rijkaard's
Barcelona back on track
|
16
Feb 2004 |
Could it be that
Dutchman Frank Rijkaard has got Barcelona finally back on track ?
Barcelona certainly put on a memorable performance yesterday in
their 3-1 win over direct rivals Atletico Madrid. All
the goals came in the first half, with Saviola starting things off
in the ninth minute when he ran on to a long clearance by Reiziger
to beat Aragoneses. Nikolaidis was able to level for Atletico ten
minutes when rounding off Nano's cross past young keeper
Jorquera, who was standing in for the suspended Víctor Valdés.
However, Brazilian ace Ronaldinho restored the lead only three
minutes later, working a swift passing move with Cocu and finishing
off scooping the ball over the head of the advancing keeper. Luis
García made it three just before the break when he headed home
Saviola's cross, and they could have scored more in the second half
before Davids got himself sent off for a second booking, after which
Rijkaard called it a day.
After the match a gleeful Rijkaard stated that the match was :
"The best we've played at home this season. It
was just so important that we took three points off a direct rival,
we're both going for similar targets in the league this season, so
to win today is fantastic. It's
the best we played at home this season. We were very convincing
because we controlled the game from the first minute and although
Atletico came back at 1-1, Barcelona have shown great determination
to react positively to the goal."

hails teammate Jose Reyes

Feb 2004 |
Former Dutch
international striker Dennis Bergkamp was full of praise for Spanish
starlet Jose Reyes after the youngster's brace helped knock Chelsea
out of the FA Cup yesterday.

first goal was exceptional and the second showed such quick
thinking. He made a great run and finished it off. It
gave us a great lift."

| Stam's
future decided after the season
|
16
Feb 2004 |
Despite
Juventus and Inter Milan closing in on Dutch international defender
Jaap Stam, Lazio president Ugo Longo remains adamant that
the former Manchester United ace's future won't be decided until the
end of the season.
Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan are all targeting Stam and all
three have approached Lazio this month with concrete offers
for Stam.
But Longo said, "Stam is one of the best defenders in the
world. It's natural that many clubs would ask about him. Whatever
decision is made, it won't happen until we ahve a clearer picture of
our future. For this, we all hope a shareholder emerges that can
help us move the club forward."

| Cruijff
says Larsson would thrive in Spain
|
15
Feb 2004 |
Espanyol's
former Dutch international winger Jordi Cruyff says Celtic star
Henrik Larsson would be in his element in Spain and although Cruijff
(son of) believes that Barcelona will be tempted to go for a bigger
name this summer, he believes that the Former Feyenoord striker
would be a welcome addition at Nou Camp.
Cruijff: "I believe he can succeed in Spain. He won't
score 40, not even 30 but can get between 15 and 20 goals and that's
some achievement. I
reckon Barcelona will go for a big-name striker like David Trezeguet,
Fernando Torres or Thierry Henry PLUS Larsson. But he can be just as
important as the other guy. He
will be in a much better situation regarding expectation and
pressure compared with a star worth £30 million who has to be
amazing. And
Larsson is still going to get the medals at the end of the season.
Larsson
is quick and strong with ability in both feet. He can also play on
the wing or behind the main striker so that is interesting to Barca.
And
Larsson is a scorer you never lose that. This is a special
footballer."

Feb 2004 |
Dutch international
record defender Frank de Boer saved Rangers an embarrassing defeat
at Aberdeen with a last minute goal. De Boer chose the perfect
moment to net his first for Gers, popping up to head home three
minutes from time.
Fernando Ricksen made a telling block to stop Prunty just as he was
about to pull the trigger after Sheerin had miskicked in front of
goal. The
interception proved vital as Frank de Boer rose to head in a Vanoli
free-kick to give his side an undeserved equaliser with just three
minutes left.

| Van
Nistelrooy scores 2 goals for United
|
15
Feb 2004 |
Ahead of Wednesday's friendly between
Holland and America , Dutch international striker Ruud van
Nistelrooy has come into blistering form. The United ace scored two
goals in the Premier League giant's 4-2 win over rivals Manchester
City.
Welsh international Ryan Giggsd the score after City
goalkeeper Claudio Reyna hesitated allowing the Welshman to poke the
ball home. The game then erupted
with the dismissal of Gary Neville who was sent off for head butting
England teammate McManaman.
Despite the turmoil United soared ahead with two more goals in the
space of three minutes.
The second owed much to Ruud van Nistelrooy’s predatory instincts
as the prolific Dutchman stole in at the far post to meet
Ronaldo’s deep cross with a thumping left-foot volley.
City were still catching their breath when Quinton Fortune darted
past Richard Dunne to the byline and cut a cross back to Ryan Giggs.
Arni Arason did well to turn the shot
away but it dropped straight to Ronaldo, who sent the rebound flying
into the net. With 12 minutes remaining on the clock Tarnat smashed
home for the visitors to reduce the damage.
But hopes of another amazing comeback following their amazing win
over Tottenham in round four were short-lived as United struck a
fourth, van Nistelrooy poking home Keane's header from Giggs' cross.

star Vieira hails Dennis Bergkamp
|
14
Feb 2004 |
In an
interview in the English daily newspaper 'The Mirror' French
international star Patrick Vieira has hailed Dutchman Dennis
Bergkamp saying that the former Dutch international striker has done
more than team-mate Thierry Henry to help transform Arsenal into a
European superpower.
Vieira said: "I read Dennis has
equalled the record for the most games for one club played by an
overseas player in the Premier League and he has been unbelievable
for Arsenal. If you look at the
successes over recent years you could say everything started with
him, because if you buy a player like Dennis Bergkamp you are saying
you want to have a team of the very, very highest quality in Europe.
I think he has moved Arsenal to another
level and I also think his presence here has made it easier to sign
other great players. He has given the club greater stature."
ergkamp is fit to return after injury for
tomorrow's FA Cup clash with Chelsea and may come back to partner
Henry at the expense of £16m signing Jose Antonio Reyes.

Feb 2004 |
|
Former PSV and Ajax ace Peter Hoekstra says
he is still undecided about his future at Stoke City. The
30-year-old former Dutch international winger is out of contract this
summer and is unsure whether he will look for a new club and is even
contemplating an early retirement.
Hoekstra: "I'mminded about
what is going to happen," said the midfielder. I think the next few
months are going to be important. I
will see how it goes and how I feel. I am not old, but it is my body
that has to do the work. I love
to play football but only if I can play 100 percent. It's
difficult when you know you can do much better, but are not able to show
it."

in the doghouse again
|
11
Feb 2004 |
Dutch
international defender Fernando Ricksen is once again in the doghouse with
his employer Glasgow Rangers who have decided to discipline the former
AZ ace for his off the ball incident with Hibernian's Derek Riordan in
last week's Scottish FA Cup semi-final.
Rangers boss Alex McLeish "I have reviewed this matter
internally and Fernando knows I will not tolerate Rangers players behaving
in an inappropriate manner. In
accordance with Club rules, the player will be fined £10,000 and the
money will be donated directly to the Rangers Charity Foundation for the
benefit of its nominated charities. I am satisfied we have dealt with this
matter appropriately."
This is not the first time that Ricksen has caused a controversy and lost
his cool and will once again have to face a disciplinary committee who
will review their own inquiry into Ricksen's alleged elbow to the face of
Hibs striker Riordan.

11
Feb 2004 |
|
Real Madrid coach Carlos
Queiroz has stated in an interview that he would prefer to have Ruud van
Nistelrooy in his squad as opposed to AS Roma star Francesco Totti who has
been linked with a move to the Spanish giants.,
Queiroz "All are great players. Van Nistelrooy and Henry have
different characteristics. My preference would be to sign a Van Nistelrooy
or Henry. At present, Real Madrid do not need a player of Totti's
characteristic. That is not the most high-priority player. In
addition, Ruud is also a great goalkeeper! Thus he could be a
goalkeeper-forward... (laughter). Ruud
and Henry are still maturing. Henry is right now at the maximum level of
his ability."

van Nistelrooy has hailed Everton super-kid Wayne Rooney after Saturday's

ex-Ajax star to move to 'The Gunners'.
When asked about Kluivert in an interview in L'Euipe, Henry said:
"Patrick Kluivert seems to me an exemplary forward: he scores goals and
he knows how to create them for his teammates. With
Kluivert, a team can play with one striker or two, as he can easily slot in
behind a lone forward if the situation merits it."

| Pressure
easing for Rijkaard with 4th spot
|
09
Feb 2004 |
It
would seem that the pressure seems to be easing a
little for Barcelona's under fire coach Frank Rijkaard after the Catalan's
defeated Osasuna to move up to fourth position in Spain.
Argentinian striker Javier Saviola put his team in the lead two minutes
before the halftime whistle but in the 67th minute, Francisco Punal
converted a penalty to equalize for Osasuna. However in the 77th minute a
touch of Brazilian magic from
Ronaldinho decided the match with a superb individual goal.
The match was little too much for
Alfredo of Osasuna and Luis Enrique of Barcelona, who were both sent off with a
red card in the last minute of the match.
After the match a relieved Rijkaard said: "It
was a very important victory for us. We have deserved this victory. I
congratulate the team for its work as much as its determination.
They have given everything on the field. This triumph gives a great morale
boost to us for the next games. The
players are beginning to gel. I'm happy for them, the fans and the
directors. Ronaldinho's goal was perfect. He always gives us that something
extra. He is a very special player. He never coasts and is always working,
that's why he is a phenomenon."

Dutchman picked himself up and easily sent the Charlton goalkeeper, Dean
Kiely the wrong way.
The win keeps Chelsea third in the league, six points behind London rivals

| Stam
issues Chelsea fans warning
|
09
Feb 2004 |
Juventus target Jaap Stam has
issued Chelsea fans a warning that the club could well end up flat broke if
their billionaire owner Abrahimovic continues to pour millions of euros in
to the team.
Stam: "It is
so simple to pour millions and millions into a club. As long as you have
enough money, every player in Europe can be brought in and every player in
Europe wants to join you.
I look at Chelsea and I know exactly what they are doing. They keep buying
all the big names and they think it will guarantee them glory. There
will be some success, they will win something. But the same thing happened
at Lazio and they thought they could just spend, spend, spend and more
success would come.
But look where this club is now. Lazio operated no differently from the
Chelsea owners. But now the club is struggling to stay alive. The
biggest problem for Chelsea is that, because of all the money spent in the
transfer market, the expectations are immense. And when the time comes that
there is not enough money to pay everyone, people will still have huge
expectations because the pressure doesn't subside. Even
at Lazio, with most of our big names gone, nobody says, Listen, we have to
cut back, we are facing a few tough seasons ahead'. The whole world is still
expecting miracles from us."

| Melchiot
backing new teammate
|
08
Feb 2004 |
|
Dutch international defender Mario
Melchiot is backing his new Chelsea teammate Scott Parker to make a big impact
at Stamford Bridge.
Melchiot.."I think he showed before he arrived he could handle the
heat," said Melchiot. "And when you come to Chelsea at the moment
there is a lot of heat, so to survive you need a lot of quality, and I think
he has that. Before he
arrived people knew already what kind of player he was. He is young and a good
talent so it is great that he came. When
you leave your old club you always get controversy because people are not
happy with you as they want you to stay there. But
as a player the only thing I can say from my move is that you want to be
successful and to do that you have to step up. I'm
not speaking for Scott but and I think that was what he was thinking. I can't
blame him for that."

wants future resolved by end of month
|
07
Feb 2004 |
Dutch international all-rounder
Phillip Cocu has informed Barcelona that he wants to know by the end of the
month whether the Catalan outfit want to keep him for next season.

radio reports hinting that Barcelona are planning to offload it's Dutch contingent
this summer, Cocu now wants know where he stands.
Cocu, who is yet to hear from Barca about a new deal explained:
"I still do not know anything and I suppose now they will begin to consider
who they want to keep and who they don't. The
situation is not like last year, then there was a lot of confusion with the
elections. The club now can decide what they're going to do and plan better. For
the players it would be important to know their futures by the end of
month."

Nistelrooy not affected by united row

Feb 2004 |

Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy is
confident that Sir Alex Ferguson's off-field dispute involving manager majority
shareholders JP McManus and John Magnier, will not affect the club's chances of
prolonging their league title or winning other silverware - and insists that the
row is not affecting the players. Van
Nistelrooy: "It is all happening at the moment but not one of us is
suffering. Not the players and not the gaffer. Manchester United have made it a
habit winning trophies under Alex Ferguson and this row will not get in the way
of that.It is all happening away from the squad so the atmosphere is as
normal."

| De
Boer misses penalty. Rangers out of Cup
|
06
Feb 2004 |
Dutch record international Frank de Boer saw a blast
from the past as his penalty curse came back to haunt him as Rangers were kicked
out of the Scottish FA Cup, thanks to a missed spot-shot from De Boer.
De Boer broke Holland’s hearts in the Euro
2000 semi- final against Italy when he missed
two spot-shots which resulted in Italy reaching the finals.
Although De Boers's failure has less consequences than in 2000, it does see the
Rangers season slump from bad to worse.
In a penalty shootout that was needed after the game between Rangers and
Hibernian had ended in 1-1., Rangers skipper Craig Moore had a half-volley
kicked off the line by Stephen Dobbie and Egil Ostenstad blew a golden last-gasp
chance when he steered a Paolo Vanoli cross over. Penalties.
Scott Brown and Tam McManus and Christian Nerlinger and Vanoli all hit the net.
Sudden death. Matthias Doumbe and Zura Khizanishvili both missed, Colin Murdock
slotted home before de Boer hit the post, resulting in a 4-3 win for Hibs.

| Bosvelt
still can't believe City's FA Cup win
|
06
Feb 2004 |
Dutch international midfielder Paul Bosvelt still
can't believe that his Manchester City are through to the next stages of the FA
Cup after 10-manCity staged one of the greatest FA Cup comebacks of all time
Bosvelt, who had trouble impressing coach Kevin Keegean during the first few
month with the club, was one of the goal heroes as Keegan’s never-say-die
battlers fought back from 3-0 down at half-time to win 4-3.
Bosvelt: “I could go on playing football for 50 years and never play in
another game like that. I certainly have never
played in such an incredible match."
City's chances of beating Tottenham were severely reduced when star striker
Nicolas Anelka limped off the field early on in the first act. Then
a three goal flurry with strikes from Ledley King, Robbie Keane and Christian
Ziege, and the sending off of City defender Joey Barton made the second
half seem just a mere formality.
Bosvelt, “No one gave us much of a chance but we found some kind of inner
strength when Joey was sent off. At half-time there were very few raised voices.
We just talked about pride and not letting the fans and ourselves down. We
had made fools of ourselves in the first 45 minutes. The only way back was to
battle — and the spirit and confidence we showed after the break made Spurs
nervous. With each goal we scored you could see them looking at one another and
wondering what was going on.”
Jon Macken came off the bench to score Wednesday’s
stoppage-time winner after goals from Sylvain Distin, Bosvelt and Shaun
Wright-Phillips had put City level.

Feb 2004 |
According to reports in the English daily newspaper
'The Sun' Frank Rijkaard's
Barcelona are chasing
Arsenal midfielder Edu.
The reports suggest that Barca have already had
face-to-face talks with Gunners vice-chairman David Dein about the Brazilian
and that the negotiations could include a swap deal with Barca

| Juventus

|

has been informed by Lazio that he will be sold this summer.
The Dutch international defender
and his agent lunched with Lazio officials on Monday and were told that the
club intended to sell him in the summer, in order to cash in on the 18 months left on his
current deal.
The news has alerted Juventus who are pushing forward
for an early agreement with Lazio.
Juve are prepared to pull all of the tricks
out of their sleeves to land the former
Manchester United centre-half and have already tabled a preliminary offer of
10 million euros , plus the shared registration of one their top young players.

| Witschge
inks six month Oita Trinita deal
|
05
Feb 2004 |
Richard
Witschge has signed a six-month contract with Japanese side Oita Trinita,
giving him a more fitting end to his illustrious career.
The 34-year-old former Ajax, Barcelona and Bordeaux player has been
playing for amateur outfit ADO'20, where his brother Rob is manager, since
November.
Former Utrecht coach Han Berger, who is manager of Oita Trinita, believes that
the former Dutch international should be part of the team that starts the
season on March 13.

| Van
Nistelrooy hopeful with new partnership
|
03
Feb 2004 |
Dutch international striker Ruud van Nistelrooy believes
that his new striking partners forced move to United earned him respect inside the Old Trafford dressing room.
When the transfer window closed on Monday night, the major focus of attention
was on the way Saha, Scott Parker and Jermain Defoe levered their way out of
clubs who did not want to sell them after receiving big-money offers to go
elsewhere.
Saha was the most outspoken of all and told Fulham he would eventually let his
contract wind down and leave for nothing if he was not allowed to join United.
While his comments may have brought widespread disapproval from the wider
football world, new striker partner Ruud van Nistelrooy admitted they went down
well with the Red Devils. On Manchester United's own TV station 'MUTV'
the Dutchman explained:
"Louis showed a lot of guts to leave Fulham. It can't have been easy
because Fulham had been good for him but he wanted to come to Manchester United
and everyone could see that. All the fans appreciated it and all the players
did as well.''
Van Nistelrooy also believes his new strike partnership with Louis Saha
can beat Treble-winning duo Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke. Manchester
United’s Dutch star and the French new boy scored in Saturday’s 3-2 win
over Southampton — Saha’s debut. Van
Nistelrooy said: “There are expectations whenever new partnerships are
formed. I am aware people are hoping it can become a pairing like Andy and
Dwight had. Louis has signed a 5½ year
contract and I have a new deal for five years. He is 25 and I am 27 so,
hopefully, there are a lot of good years in us.”

| Zenden
shoots Meddlesbrough to final
|
03
Feb 2004 |
|
Premier League outfit Middlesbrough have
reached the Final of the Carling Cup with a hard-earned 2-1 victory over
Arsenal and excellent play by Dutch international midfielder Boudewijn Zenden. Following
Middlesbrough 1-0 win at Highbury in the first leg of this
intriguing Semi-Final, Zenden's side are through by 3-1 on aggregate.
Zenden was menacing throughout the entire match and after a number of promising raids on the Gunners' defence -
the former PSV ace was rewared for his efforts in 69th
minute when Gaizka Mendieta played an inch-perfect first-time pass into his path. The Dutchman
produced a composed and clinical finish to send the Boro fans - whose club have
not yet won a major trophy in 129 years of trying - into ecstasy.

| Van
Nistelrooy says Ferguson not affected
|
03
Feb 2004 |
Dutch
international striker Ruud van Nistelrooy insists that Manchester United boss
Sir Alex Ferguson is not being affected by the off-field politics concerning his
dispute with major
shareholder John Magnier over the record-breaking
racehorse Rock of Gibraltar that has been dragging on for 12 months.
Last Friday Ferguson revealed that his son Jason had been forced to
call in the police amid allegations that his mail had been stolen and bin-bags
being rifled through.
Ferguson has never given any indication he was prepared to back down
in his legal battle for 50% of the stud rights to 'The Rock', the apparent
vulnerability over his family and chief executive David Gill's admission that
a speedy resolution to the conflict would be "in the best interests of
all concerned'' points to an outbreak of peace.
However, even though the row completely overshadowed Saturday's 3-2 win over
Southampton, Van Nistelrooy, who netted his 99th club goal in the game, has
not
noticed any chance in Ferguson on the training ground.
On Manchester United's own TV station Van Nistelrooy said:
"We know what is going but as players we can't let it affect us and I
haven't seen any difference in the manager either.
He is just the same as always. He doesn't get affected by that kind of
thing, that's why he has been in the job for so long. He always manages to
stay focussed on the football side.

| Davids
declares Barcelona have first option
|
03
Feb 2004 |
Dutch international midfielder
Edgar Davids, who is on loan to Barcelona from Juventus until the end of the
season when his contract expires, insists that the Spanish outfit will have first option on him at the end of the season.
Davids:
"When I came here I did not know the inner
workings of the club, although I knew that I was joining a great club and a
great team. What I can say is that everything has been
positive. Now isn't the time to talk about my future,
but Barcelona will be first in the queue when I decide my future. If we can
agree terms then I will be here to stay."
|
| Witschge
to hold talks with Oita Trinita
|
02
Feb 2004 |
Former
Dutch international Richard Witschge
is planning to fly off to Japan this
week to hold talks Oita Trinita, who
are hoping to persuade the midfielder
to come out of retirement.
The 34-year-old player, decided to
hang up his boots at the end of last
season after being informed by Ajax
that there was no future for him in
Amsterdam and after failing to secure
an interesting club. Last
Decemeber Italian outfit Genoa
displayed an interest in Witschge
but after nothing materialized, he
decided to keep his condition up to
scratch by training with amateur
outfit ADO'20 who are trained by his
brother Rob.
Oita Trinata's homeground is
'The Oita Prefectural Sportpark' in
Oita City and is usually filled with
43.000 spectators during home
matches.
This would seem a more appropriate end
of a career for a player who has worn
the shirts of Ajax, Bordeaux and
Barcelona, than the anonymity of the
Dutch amateur league.

| Davids
scores as Barcelona crush Albacete
|
02
Feb 2004 |
Under
pressure Barcelona coach Frank
Rijkaard finally had something to
smile about yesterday after his
Catalan outfit crushed Albacete 5-0.
New signing Edgar Davids scored his
first Barca goal for the club and
futher goals from Xavi, Javier Saviola,
Ricardo Quaresma and Luis Enrique
rounded off a fine Barcelona display.
The 3 points see Rijkaard's squad
climb to within two points of the
fourth spot.
After the match a gleaming Rijkaard
said: "It's
been a great day for the club. I
was delighted with our wingers, Quaresma
and Luis Enrique. They continually
changed flanks and were outstanding.
They both deserved their goals. Today
I want to saviour the victory. We'll sit
down tomorrow and discuss what lies
ahead with the players."

| Lazio
deny Inter have option on Stam
|
02
Feb 2004 |
Lazio have
rubbished reports suggesting that
Internazionale have secured first
option on Jaap Stam.
Inter have been targeting Lazio duo
Jaap Stam and Dejan Stankovic all
season but up till now Lazio have
remained adamant that they would be
selling the pair.
However, with just minutes remaining
to the January transfer window, the
two clubs have finalized the transfer
of Dejan Stankovic after months of
negotiations, and it was claimed that
Inter had sealed an option for Stam.
Although Inter, Milan and
Juventus are all reported to be
targeting Stam for a summer move, the
Italian media are all in agreement
that Inter hold the best cards.
Meanwhile, Lazio general manager
Giuseppe de Mita remains firm that
Stam's case is different to that of
Stankovic.
"I want to underline that Stam's
situation is completely different to
Stankovic's one.
I absolutely
exclude Stankovic's operation is bounded
in any way to Stam."

| Saints
boss livid with Van Nistelrooy winner
|
01
Feb 2004 |
Manchester
United climb back on top of the
Premiership after a thrilling 3-2
win over Southampton at Old Trafford
and a controversial winning goal
from Ruud van Nistelrooy.
With goals from new signing Louis
Saha and Paul Scholes and two goals
from Southampton's Kevin Phillips,
it looked as if the entertaining
game was heading for a 2-2 stalemate
until crafty Van Nistelrooy rounded
off a free-kick - bagging the
winning goal from close range.
Afterwards, Saints boss Gordon
Strachan admitted he was livid
with the way Van Nistelrooy scored
the winner, claiming the Dutchman
was off-side from a free-kick.
Strachan: "He
was offside. I don't care about
clauses ABC and D, all they do is
cover the backsides of inadequate
people.
What is to stop a team from shoving
four players round a goalkeeper at
any free-kick and preventing him
from moving.
I haven't bothered going to see him,
no doubt he will pop up on a
phone-in somewhere. He was on TV
this morning - why can't he just
concentrate on refereeing instead of
trying to be a celebrity. I
get annoyed because we spent
yesterday working hard on how we
were going to defend set-pieces. I
might as well have got the referee
in instead and asked him whether we
should make the journey or just give
them the points and have a game of
golf instead."

League holder AC Milan are hoping
trump Inter and Juventus as all
three Italian giants try and gain the
services of Jaap Stam at the end of this
season.

his sights on a transfer to Inter who
were prepared to offer him a
one=-year-deal so that he could finish
off his footballing career in
Holland.
Hover,
both Juventus and now Milan are
confident that they can convince the
defender to sign a longer term contract.

| Rijkaard
blasted by Spanish media
|
31 Jan 2004 |
The
Spanish media have blasted Barcelona
trainer Frank Rijkaard for his tactics
in Catalan's midweek FA Cup match
against Zaragosa.
A
late goal from Zaragosa's Yordi on
Thursday night was enough to knock
Barcelona out of the competition. A goal
down from the first leg, the Catalans
made it all square when Luis García
volleyed home a shot from outside of the
area before the break. But with the
possibility of extra time looming, Yordi
hooked the ball past Víctor Valdes
following a corner to take his side
through to yesterday's draw.
The
Spanish media are especially critical of
Rijkaard's decision to substitute star
player Ronaldinho 10 minutes before the
final whistle.
The Catalan daily newspaper El Mundo
Deportivo, who have always been pro-Rijkaard
up till now, spoke of "an enormous
beginners mistake."
With Ronaldhino facing a ban for
Barcelona's next league game, the
newspaper found it hard to understand
why the Brazilian was substituted - and
believe he should of played until the
end of the game and if necessary through
the entire extra-time.
The influential newspaper 'Marca' came
with the headline "And who is going
to replace Rijkaard ?"
The
Dutch trainer is still remaining calm
however and in the Spanish media he
stated that he still feels his place is
safe.
Rijkaar: "I don't think that I will
be sacked. I'm very unhappy with our FA
Cup exit but I'm not planning to make a
dram out of it. We have to go on - and
I'm interested in how the players react
to this dissapointment"

names to the club and to lighten the
club's wage bill the Dutch enclave will
have to be dismantled
The 8 players to get the chop are

as well as Dutchmen Patrick Kluivert,,
Cocu, Marc Overmars, Michael
Reiziger and on-loan Arsenal wing-back Gio

| Lazio
turn down latest offer for Stam
|
30 Jan 2004 |
Italian
Seria A outfit Lazio remain adamant that
they will hold on to Dutch international
defender Jaap Stam after refusing another
Juventus offer.
Juventus and Lazio representatives
met on Tuesday and Juventus tabled an 13
million euro deal plus Fabrizio Miccoli in
exchange for Jaap Stam and Dejan Stankovic.
Juventus were also prepared to aloow
Stankovic and Stam to remain with Lazio
until the end of the season.
Although Lazio have turned down Juventus's
offer they have inforned the Italian
giants that they may well be tempted if
they include Enzo Maresca and Luis Jimenez
in a cash bid.

| Ruud
van Nistelrooy inks new United deal
|
30 Jan 2004 |
Ruud van
Nistelrooy, who had already verbally
agreed to a new United deal, put pen to
paer yesterday on a new deal that will
make him the club's joint top-scorer
alongside with skipper Roy Keane. After
inking the new deal Van Nistelrooy
expressed his delight saying:
“I am delighted to commit my future to
the club. I have grown very fond of
Manchester United — the fans are
amazing. I have had some great moments
here but I want to continue to give the
club my best and I am looking forward to
new challenges.”
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson also
expressed his delight with the Dutch
international's signature.
Ferguson:
“We are delighted to get Ruud’s
signature on a new contract. It shows the
ambition of the club to keep the best.
Ruud has broken every record since he has
been here. His improvement and continual
commitment to the club is an asset.
Ruud has proved to be a fantastic signing
and his contract extension is great news
for the club and the fans. Van Nistelrooy
had told the club he would only commit
himself to a new deal once the manager was
sorted out.
I think we have gone beyond shock. After
being out injured for a year he came to us
and scored 36 goals in his first season.
It had to take something special to top
that. But he did it by getting 44 last
season and already has 18 this season.
He is a great
striker. The speed of his footwork in and
around the box is fantastic.”

having occupied Chelsea's bench for the past
three years, forgotten defender Winston
Bogarde is still attracting attention. The
33-year-old PSV target is reported to be

| Advocaat
pleased with De Boer transfer
|
28
Jan 2004 |
Glasgow
Rangers manager Alex McLeish says that he has
not had to dig deep into his pockets to acquire
the services of Holland's most capped
international, Frank de Boer (108 caps) and
insists that De Boer has inked a four-month deal
that sees him reunited with twin brother Ronald,
for just "pocket money".
McLeish insists De Boer's main reason for
accepting Ranger's terms is to ensure he does
not lose his place in Holland coach Dick
Advocaat's Euro 2004 squad - and
absolutely not for the money. McLeish also
defended his decision to sign a 34-year-old
veteran, in stead of opting for the youth.
McLeish:
"It must be stressed that, contrary to what
people think, Frank is not here on a king's
ransom, he's actually on pocket money. He
is highly motivated, he wants to play with his
brother and he wants to do well here - that can
only be a good thing for Rangers and it's a
major coup for us. I
can understand the questions about Frank's age
but we have young boys coming through at Rangers
and they need experienced players - like Frank
and Ronald - to be playing alongside them.
This man is
five yards quicker in his head compared to the
speed merchants on the ground."
According to McLeish, Dick Advocaat was
extremely positive with the news that De Boer
would once again be playing for a top-outfit on
a regular basis. He
said: "I spoke to Dick and he was totally
behind it 100 per cent and he thought it was
great for Frank to get regular first-team
football regardless of what country he played
in. He
never gave away any secrets about whether Frank
would be in the squad for Euro 2004 - I think he
will. I'm
sure if he plays to a high level here and his
confidence is back at 100 per cent, then he'll
have a marvellous chance come the day when the
squad is announced."

| Kluivert
display shuts up critics
|
27
Jan 2004 |
Barcelona's
under-fire striker Patrick Kluivert has fired
back at his critics with a resounding display
against Sevilla in which the Dutch international
record top-scorer inspired his team to a 1-0 win.
Not only did Kluivert score the one and only
goal of the match to help lift ailing Barcelona
to the seventh spot, he also proved to trainer
Frank Rijkaard and the Catalan's fans that he is
not just 'another good player' with a dazzling
display that some may argue was his finest game
in a Barca shirt.
After a week of defending his striker, Barca
coach Frank Rijkaard said last night: "I am
very pleased for Kluivert. It was important that
he scored."
Kluivert said, "I didn't need to shut
people up. The most important thing is that we
won. It has been unjust what people have been
saying about me. That's why I have stopped
speaking to the press. The
most important thing is the win and the three
points."
When posed the question if his performance had
saved Rijkaard's job, Kluivert added, "I
don't know if I've saved him from the chop. But
if I have, then I'm delighted. But
in any case, I don't believe he needed his job
saving."

| Kluivert
denies pre-contract with Arsenal
|
27
Jan 2004 |
Dutch
international striker Patrick Kluivert has
denied reports that were published by the Spanish
daily newspaper 'Marca' suggesting that
a number of European clubs have been
contacted by the Catalan outfit to alert them to
the Dutchman's availability.
Kluivert is especially bitter with the suggestions
claiming that the Barcelona striker had signed a
pre-contract agreement with Arsenal to join the
Gunners in the summer have been denied by the
Dutch international.
Yesterday Kluivert told the Catalan media:
"Arsenal? What hurts me is that people can
think that I have signed a pre-contract because
it is not the truth.."
|
| Kluivert
scores as Barcelona win 0-1
|
25
Jan 2004 |
Frank
Rijkaard's Barcelona booked an on paper impressive
away victory against Sevilla. Criticized
goal-getter Patrick Kluivert;s solitary goal separated
the two teams as well in the match . The win
sees the Catalans earn three points which keeps them
in seventh place. Either side could have scored early
on, with Luis García shooting wide for the visitors
and Baptista and Darío Silva both going close at the
other end. Kluivert got on the end of Luis García's
cross though on the half hour mark to steer a header
past Esteban, and the visitors held on under the local
pressure which continued right to the end, despite the
sending off of Martí with five minutes to go. The
result takes the pressure off Rijkaard, who may have
been out if the team had put up another poor
performance.

like to finish his career in Britain, will now be able
to fulfil his wish and the pairing up with his twin at
Glasgow would be the ideal way of finalizing

Bergkamp was on target for Arsenal yesterday as they
London outfit edged Boudewijn Zenden's Middlesbrough out

Although
Joseph Desire Jobd the score for Middlesbrough ,
it was not enough as goals from Dennis Bergkamp and
Freddie Ljungberg (2) had Arsenal on their way before
substitute David Bentley rounded off the scoring with a
superb lob, which Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger described
as typical Bergkamp goal. "Bentley scored a great
goal. I believe that he has a bit of the characteristics
of Bergkamp, who is his idol. He has a good role model
there and I hope he can follow him, but we have to let
him grow and mature. There are movements there of a
talented player though."

| De
Boers twins to be reunited at Rangers ?
|
24
Jan 2004 |
Dutch
twins Frank and Ronald De Boer could be reunited next
term at Glasgow Rangers. Ronald,
who is set to make his return this afternoon after a
lengthy 5 months on the sidelines, is hoping
to impress Rangers during the second half of the season
to warrant the Scottish Premier League giants to offer
him a a new contract when his current deal expired this
summer.
De Boer has also vented that he would be more than
willing to accept a wage reduction order to stay in
Scotland for one more year.
Ronald's brother Frank has recently fallen out with
Galatasary coach Fatih Terim, which has sparked off
rumours that the former Barcelona defender will be on
his way out of Turkey.
Frank has often said that he would like to finish his
career in Britain and the pairing up with his twin at
Glasgow would be the ideal way of finalizing their
illustrious careers together.
With the attraction of European football and knowing
that Rangers would certainly be competing for trophies
domestically, Frank could be tempted to play in
Scotland.

| Wapenaar
to remain with Portsmouth
|
24
Jan 2004 |
Den
Haag target Harald Wapenaar has been told by
Premier League outfit Portsmouth that he will not be
leaving Fratton Park as they do not have the funds to
sign Brentford goalkeeper Paul Smith.
Pompey boss Storrie explained: "We
know of Den Haag's interest, through an agent, but
nothing's going to happen. We
need three keepers so we couldn't let one go unless we
had another one coming in. Brentford
want a fee for Smith, so that would not happen now.
Any money we put in during the transfer window will be
for a striker."

Arveladze told Rangers World: "We are not playing

him. He is a special player who can do special things
for us so I am looking forward to playing with him
again.''

| Rijkaard
looking for big names
|

Jan 2004 |
Barcelona
coach Frank Rijkaard is combing the market for star
players to add to his star-studded squad and says that he
has held informal talks with some of the game's biggest
stars about coming to the Nou Camp next season.
Rijkaard: "It
is too soon to say we will be making drastic changes to
the current squad. I already have spoken with players of
highest level who see the advantages of playing for Barca,
a famous club. I
do not believe that there are many players who do not want
to come here, indeed there are many that want to play
here."
When
posed the question if Barcelona were targeting Arsenal's
French star Thierry Henry, Rijkaard added, "Anything
is possible. Great clubs are always interested in great
players."

Stam will be remaining with them until at least the end of

rivals Internazionale.

offers and confirmed that reigning Italian champions
Juventus and Champion League holders AC Milan were

a mid-season move but still says he is most intrigued by the
offer on the table from the Nerazzurri.
Stam: "Personally, I
prefer Inter's offer because it coincides with the natural
expiry of my contract. Other

| Up
front assistance for Ruud van Nistelrooy
|
19 Jan 2004 |
Manchester United striker Ruud van
Nistelrooy has been given up-front assistance with the 19
million euro capture of former Fulham ace Louis Saha. That, is
according to the view of
Sun Sport columnist and former Fulham and West Ham star Tony
Gale. “Saha
has proved at Fulham he is able to play the lone role up front
— a role Ruud van Nistelrooy has filled so well at United.
His arrival now gives
Fergie the added bonus of using two out-and-out strikers
together. Ferguson
has not had that luxury since Ole Solskjaer was injured some
time back and whose recovery has suffered more than a few
setbacks.
There was also an increasing worry Van Nistelrooy would suffer
from burnout as lack of cover forced him to play in every
game, even if he was suffering from a dip in form or niggling
injuries. Saha’s transfer means Fergie has the opportunity
to give Van Nistelrooy a much-needed rest against some of the
lesser lights in the Premiership.

disregard the technical aspect and the team's
needs."

and level at 1-1.
After the match Davids said.."I
have always been a fan of Barcelona. And I'm delighted to now
be playing here."
Wtih the arrival of Davids it was expected that Rijkaard would
reshuffle his pack at the cost of midfielder Gerard, but
Davids indicated that he was prepared to help balance out the
team and play at the back.
"I've
played at the back before and it would be natural to return
there. I'm very pleased we have signed Davids because he is an
excellent midfielder," said Gerard
After the match coach Frank
Rijkaard said he was feeling somewhat bitter and told the
Spanish press that his side deserved better. "I'm
frustrated because again my team played well, but we did not

| Rijkaard
still interested in Henrik Larsson
|
16 Jan 2004 |
Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard is
still very interested in bringing former Feyenoord striker
Henrik Larsson to the club and although the Catalan outfit
have a number of prolific strikers, Rijkaard says he is
refusing to rule out a move to sign the Swedish international,
whose contract with Celtic runs out at the end of this season.
In an interview published in the Scottish media Rijkaard said
.. " He is great player. If all the circumstances are
right he would fit into the project of Barcelona. He is a
little bit older now - but he has always had good form. For
me, though, it is difficult to talk about other players
because I am working with my team, Barcelona is a big step to
come from another country with a different culture and
mentality. But Larsson has played a lot of international
games, so he knows how to handle those situations, If you have
a good player in a country like Scotland and other clubs are
searching for a player like that then he has two
possibilities," he said.

| Hasselbaink
scores for Chelsea
|
15 Jan 2004 |
Chelsea booked
a place into the fourth round of the FA Cup after
Roman
Abramovich’s mega-bucks Blues beat Watford by 4-0. It
was Chelsea's second attempt to reach the next stages of the
cup after being forced into a replay by Watford after their
first meeting ended 2-2 at Vicarage Road.
In the 7th minute of the game a Mutud the score and maybe
the goal was his way of asking Ranieri why he seems to be in
the market for Christian Vieri and Louis Saha.
Dutch international striker and fellow
hitman Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink posed the same question when he
slammed home a 34th-minute scorcher. With
J-Flo and Mutu — who claimed another after 76 minutes — in
such irresistible form, who needs to buy?

Madrid sports chief Jorge Valdano has lashed out at
Barcelona's new signing Edgar Davids and believes that he does
not have the same class as Brazilian star Ronaldhino, when

is not a galactico. He
is a battling player, a fighter of the centre of the field.
He
does not have the quality to place him on a higher plane,
somewhere you would locate a Ronaldinho for example."

| Gudjohnsen
hails Hasselbaink partnership
|
13 Jan 2004 |
Eidur Gudjohnsen believes
that Chelsea´s match last weekend against Leicester City is
proof that his partnership with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink can
still be a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League.
Gudjohnsen and Hasselbaink are no longer the regular
first-choice up front tandem for manager Claudio Ranieri, but on
the evidence of The Walkers Stadium display the duo can remain a
major force with Hasselbaink scoring twice in a 4-0 romp and
Gudjohnsen linking up effectively with the Dutchman.
Gudjohnsen said: "It was nice for me and Jimmy to play
together again and there were signs against Leicester that we
can still really play well off each other. Everybody knows that
we are comfortable playing together. We really enjoy it. We work
off each other very well and we played some lovely one-twos on
Sunday. We showed what we are about and I was glad for Jimmy
that he got his two goals. I'm very pleased for him because he
hadn't played the last few games. But I think everyone is
wanting to play and that's the positive thing about the club at
the moment. Everyone is raring to go, is on their toes and, when
called upon, we all want to be ready to take the chance.''
