| Vitesse
are hoping that Jhon van Beukering and Nick Hofs, who both spent most of
last season recuperating from surgery that they underwent after both
players had sustained ankle injuries, will be fit in time for the beginning
of the new season. Both players are continuing to work hard on their
recoveries through the holiday period in an attempt to be fit for the
start of the new Eredivisie season. In an interview on local Radio/TV
station Omroep Gelderland, Van Beukering said: "If you are injured,
you have to train during the breaks. I'm working hard for a comeback. I
will not be ready for the start of the season. Maybe one or two months
later." Nick Hofs added: "Let's just hope that things will go
good from now on. I just want to train and build up. I did not have a
great year so hopefully everything will go perfect next season." |

complete signing of Stefanovic |
20 Jun 2003
|
| Portsmouth
have finally completed the signing of Vitesse defender and Serbia and
Montenegro international Dejan Stefanovic for a fee of €2.6 million
Euros. Pompey manger Harry Redknapp stated on the club's website
that 'Stefanovic he's going to be a great player for us.' he also added
that "He brings a
lot of experience to the back and is solid on the left hand side. He's a
great signing." About Scottish outfit Rangers last minute
attempt to lure the 28-year-old from under their nose, Redknapp said
"Rangers came in strong for him at the end, but he'd already made up
his mind that he wanted to come to us." |

to sign for Portsmouth today |
18 Jun 2003
|
| Although
newly promoted Portsmouth recently denied that they were interested in
Vitesse's Dejan Stefanovic, Pompey boss Harry Redknapp is convinced
that he will be able to conclude the deal today for Vitesse Arnhem
defender after agreeing a €2.8
million Euros transfer sum. The 28-year-old player, who came bottom of
FootballNL's fairplay after having accumulated 8 yellow and two red cards
this season, has, agreed a three-year contract Portsmouth

Although Newly-promoted Premiership side
Portsmouth have
rubbished reports suggesting that they are interested in Vitesse
defender Dejan Stefanovic, Vitesse have announced that they are
currently holding talkls with the Premier League outfit. Vitesse have
been forced to put the Serbia & Montenegro centre back in the summer
sale due to their financial position and are forced to listen to offers for
the player, whose contract runs out in 2006. Vitesse's technical manager Jan
Streuer said: "We are waiting for an offer. We want to see what they
are willing to spend on Dejan. If
it's correct that they want to pay two million euros then Stefanovic will
absolutely stay here." Portsmouth
manager Harry Redknapp confirmed earlier this week he was tracking a
defender from Europe, but insists that his club have little to spend.
Redknapp "We have a budget of about €5.5 million Euros and that
includes the wages. If you
consider that we need six or seven players then you'll understand that we
are not interested in spending money on transfer fees."

|
Newly promoted Portsmouth have denied
claims that have suggested that the club has signed Vitesse's
Yugoslavian defender Dejan Stefanovic. 'Pompey' chief Peter Storrie said:
"Believe me we have not currently
signed anybody and it's a bit tiring trotting out with the same message day
in and day out. "It's very
nice for others to sign our players for us but we are more than capable of
making our own minds up and the definitive signings will be announced by
ourselves officially at the appropriate time."

Vitesse's financial position has forced
them to seek a buyer for their Serbo Montenegrin defender, Dejan Stefanovic

a summer move. Stefanovic, who move to Vitesse from Sheffield Wednesday in
1999 has said that he would welcome a return to the Premier League and is
confident that a move is imminent. Stefanovic, who has accumulated 8
yellow and 2 red cards this season, said "I am proud to come to
England again. I hope to come back to play in The Premiership this summer.
I have two or three chances of clubs. I
cannot say any names but my club are talking with three other clubs, so we
will see."

| Jan
van Halst hangs up his boots |
30 May 2003
|
Ex-Dutch international Jan van Halst has
announced that yesterday's 2-0 win over Willem II was the last match of his
career. "I thought about it
and came to the conclusion it's the end of the story. This
season, I was unlucky with several injuries and I don't want to have a
season such as this. "I have
a club who request much from me and therefore it is a good moment after a
2-0 win today to quit. I haven't
taken everything out of my career, however, I came far with my qualities and
I am proud of it. My heart is
crying, however, my farewell with Vitesse is with a smile."
After 335 matches and stints with Utrecht, Twente Ajax and
Vitesse Van Halst has decided to call it a day.

| Vitesse's
Janssen unhappy with bench role |
30 May 2003
|
According to provincial Radio/TV 'Omroep
Gelderland' Vitesse midfielder Theo Janssen is demanding first-team football
next season or he will look for a new club . The 21-year-old has
has only figured in 10 matches this season compared to his 30 last term.
Janssen: "I have to convince the coach that I should have played from the start
in every game." "I can't play next to Jan van Halst and I think that Van Halst will
play again next season. Then the chance is big that I will be benched again.
And one thing is sure: I will not sit on the bench next season. I have played a terrible season, true. I know what I can and that I
didn't show. I will do my utmost in the preparations for next season. And if
the coach finds that I'm not good enough, we must see what can be done."
Although several clubs have shown their interest in the midfielder, Janssen is
to undergo surgery on his
leg injury during the summer and this could well deter clubs .
However with Jan van Halst's announcement that he will be hanging up his boots
at the end of the season, their is a distinct possibility that Janssen can
regain his first team place.

to appeal against Jevric's ban |
28 May 2003
|
Vitesse's new coach Edward Sturing has
vented his anger towards the Dutch FA (KNVB) concerning the four-match
suspension imposed on their goalkeeper Dagolsav Jevric.
Sturing has vowed to appeal against the ban and told the Dutch daily newpaper
that "The red card was justified, but the punishment is ridiculous. We
are looking forward to the new season - we don't want to miss our goalkeeper
at the start." Jevric was sent off in Sunday's 4-4 draw with Excelsior
for kicking his opponent Gill Swerts in the backside, and will now miss the
vital relegation decider against Willem II tomorrow.
The arbitration committee of the KNVB has announced it will look into the
suspension.

test Vitesse youth player |
20
May 2003
|
Aberdeen are to test Vitesse youth player
Tom Verhaar in their friendly against FA Cup finalists Southampton
tonight. Abderdeen's trainer Paterson said, "Verhaar is a left-sided
midfielder and I'm keen to have a look at him. I've
had loads of lists from agents of available players but Tom was one I thought
looked quite promising. Sometimes the
description you get from agents can be a bit different from what you think of a
player but we don't have much to lose by playing him in tomorrow's game. According
to his CV he has played a dozen or so games for Vitesse and he is still just 21.
Verhaar hasn't made any first team appearances for Vitesse as of yet.

can be reached saying: "The door ison both sides again," We will
now go and look what is possible. Next week we will speak again."

15 Apr 2003

off before scoring Feyenoord's last minute winning goal against

Uilenberg also criticised match officials for having overlooked the severity
of the offence, after Lurling attacked Vitesse goalkeeper Dragoslav
Jevric.

| Edward
Sturing takes over at Vitesse |
01 Apr 2003
|
After a weekend of talks Edward Sturing
has taken over as Vitesse's new coach. Sturing believes that he can help
Vitesse avoid relegation if he can change the players attitudes.
"I am fully convinced, 100%, that this team can stay in the
Eredivisie. All that matters now is the attitude of the players in
games, If that's okay the qualities can come to the surface
again. But for
now I need players that battle. That they have more than enough quality I
know from last season. With this team we were able to play in the UEFA
Cup." adding:
"I was asked by Vitesse to become their coach and to such a request
I cannot say no I have been at this club for 16 years and have gone through so many
things here. The coming two months are so decisive for the club, even for its
existence. If they call upon me at such a moment I have to say yes."

t"We will certainly not come to a conclusion
today. We have to do a lot of work in a short time span and we want
it to be done in a good way. It's not certain that we will have a new coach on Monday
morning.
We will talk further." Youth coach Sturing
has insisted he does
not want to be appointed purely on an interim basis. "Only if I can sign a contract for a longer period am I interested
in taking the job," he said

sacked.

Wednesday night and there was a frank exchange of views. A statement from supporters read out to Snellenburg
said: "As long
as Snoei is coach, as long as things go as they are going, then the white

dismissing reports suggesting that his career was over Vitesse forward Louis Laros has
now
admitted defeat in his battle to save his career and has now decided that it
is time to hang up his boots due to a chronic knee injury.
"Of course I saw this coming, but
nevertheless this is still a great disappointment. I have taken the decision
to stop by myself after consulting with Dr Heyboer and the medical staff of
Vitesse. "It has been a very difficult
decision. It's terrible to stop
playing professional football." Laros is
turning his attention to trainers career and is now planning to follow a training course with the Dutch Football

tell Riga to look for a new club |
19 Mar 2003
|
|
Vitesse have informed striker
Mustapha Riga that he must look at for a new club at the end of the season.
Although the 21-year-old player has been a regular member of
Vitesse's first team squad this season the club believe that his further
delevopment is too unpredictable to take a chance. Riga was not available
for comment saying that he felt sad about the decision and would only discuss
the situation after he had come to terms with the fact
he must quickly find a new club.
|
| Laros
denies retirement speculations |
14 Mar 2003
|
| Reports
suggesting that ouis Laros's career is over have been dismissed by the
Vitesse player. Laros is convinced that there is still hope that his
serious knee injury will heal, although a possible early retirement has
not been ruled out by the 30 year old midfielder. Laros is becoming more
and more annoyed with all the stories
saying he has quit the game to concentrate on a career in coaching.
"I really don't know where this story
started. But it's untrue.
As far as I can tell a local newspaper in Dordrecht has started this
so-called news and after that everyone has used that report, But the fact is that I haven't decided anything
yet. I am still
busy with my rehabilitation in Zeist. It is way too early to call in my
retirement. In the next two weeks I will have talks with the medical staff
of Vitesse to see if there is a possibility for me to ever play again. I
must be honest though, it doesn't look good. But, as I said, nothing has been decided
yet. And I hope that I
can end this nonsense now. I'm phoned up all the time about this affair
and it drives me nuts. I have not retired, the reports were
incorrect."

| Trainer
Mike Snoei to stay on at Vitesse |
11 Mar 2003
|
|
After contemplating his future and after receiving unanimous
backing from Vitesse's board, Mike Snoei has decided to continue as
Vitesse Arnhem coach at least until the end of the season. Snoei's position looked to be in
jeopardy afte a series of disappointing results sending Vitesse to
within one point of the relegation zone. The club have only managed to win
one game in the last eleven league matches. Vitesse's chairman Jos
Vaessen said: "We still have the opinion that our choice for Mike Snoei and
his assistant Theo Bos is the right one.
and after all the talks of the last few days we still have full
confidence in our coaches."

| 5
clubs apply for backdoor InterToto place |
21 Feb 2003 |
| Five
Dutch clubs have applied to the Dutch FA (KNVB) to take part in the
InterToto competition. NAC, Heerenveen, Willem II, Utrecht and low
budget high profile RKC are all hoping to be amongst the maximum two Dutch
clubs that are allowed to participate in the UEFA Cup backdoor
competition. Most years, Vitesse league position, grants them European
football automatically but this year Vitesse have very little chance of
achieving that. Even so Vitesse have surprisingly decided not to take part
in this year's event due to budgetary reasons.

Rumanian clubs Rapid Boekarest, Electroputere Craiova and Farul Constanza.

Utrecht, second division club FC Wageningen and FC Twente. Van Halst's
nine year spell at Twente came to an end in 1999, when he won a move to Ajax.
However, after a fine start, Van Halst fell foul of then coach Co Adriaanse and
spent the majority of 2000/01 on loan at SC Fortuna Sittard. But with the
appointment of Ronald Koeman as Adriaanse's successor during the 2001/02

break, fulfilling a vital role as the club regained the Dutch titel.

for:
AJ Auxerre, Olympique Nîmes, Châteauroux, Valence, Paris Saint-Germain

tissue damage in his right knee, resulting from an operation he underwent nearly 2 years
ago to

faced with yet more surgery and Vitesse fear that Zongo will remain out

Vitesse's Yugoslavian
international Dejan Stefanovic has agreed a new contract with the club
which should keep him at the Gelredome side till the summer of 2006. The highly rated
defender, who has attracted the interest of Ajax, Feyenoord and several
foreign clubs, stated that he would only be prepared to leave the Arnhem for a top European team.
Vitesse have said that, despite the new contract, they would still be
prepared to sell him if the right offer comes along in order to help ease
their current financial problems.

| Vitesse
lose to Excelsior 1 - 2 |
18 Dec 2002
|
|
Although Vitessed the
score in the 19th minute of the match, via their best player of the night Gert
Claessens, they never really looked as if they would be able to beat
the visitors. It was, therefore, no surprise when Brian Pinas equalized in the
21st minute with a low hard shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Excelsior continued to dominate and in the 41st minute took the lead after
Said Boutahar smashed one into the back of the net. Although Excelsior
continued their domination in the 2nd act the score remained unchanged. In
the 81st minute referee Braamhaar was forced to hold the game up for 10
minutes after Vitesse fans had hurled metal lighters onto the pitch, nearly
hitting the Excelsior goalkeeper.

| Vitesse
lose at Liverpool 1-0 |
12 Dec 2002
|
|
Vitesse came out and played as if
they had nothing more to lose, at a half-full and
less-than-usually-atmospheric Anfield Road, and took the chance to show
they could play better football than two weeks again in the Gelredome. After
a couple of early opportunites, Bob Peeters had the perfect chance to put
them ahead but threw it away, leaving Michael Owen to show him how, his
first attempt blocked by Jevric but the English international slid the
rebound under the goalie for his 19th European goal. Vitesse were a bit
dismayed by the goal but hung on and almost had an equalizer but Amoah had
his fine distance shot saved by the very solid Chris Kirkland. Vitesse
played a good 2nd half, with several players putting on spirited
performances (including the young Michael Jansen who cleared a shot
off the line close to time) but never quite looked like getting an equalizer
while Liverpool, while less than impressive, did what was necessary.

| Snoei
contemplates harsh measures |
10 Dec 2002
|
|
Vitesse trainer Mike Snoei is
considering harsh measures as he attempts to get his team back on course now
that the Arnhemmers have sunk to 12th place in the table, their worst ever
Ere Divisie ranking after 15 games played. The 2-0 defeat by Gelderland
rivals NEC at the weekend means they've picked up only one point in the last
4 matches, indicating a clear form-crisis which requires a speedy solution.
With Thursday's UEFA Cup clash at Anfield against Liverpool ahead of them we
could see some new faces in the lineup to face the English Premiership
giants and for the last couple of matches before the Ere Divisie
winter-break in Holland.
|
| NEC
beat Vitesse 2-0 |
08 Dec 2002
|
|
Trainer Johan Neesekens will
be relieved that his team have finally earned themselves a decent result,
after the recent string of disappointments in which they've only won one
point in 6 matches , with this 2-0 home win against
Vitesse. For Mike Snoei it will not have been the rehearsal he would have
wanted for Thursday's UEFA Cup clash at Anfield Road against Liverpool. It
was an entertaining match where both sides had their fare share of chances
to score but the home team were rather better in their finishing, Gorgi Hristov putting them ahead on the half-hour and Peter Wisgerhof
making it 2-0 in the 70th. Vitesse have only won one point in their last 4
matches and sink further down the table to 12th place on 16 points while NEC
are now 10th with 18 points but a game in hand.

Monday has failed to reveal any sign of a current cause for the continuing
problem.

01 Dec 2002

Vitesse
lineup: Jevric - Cornelisse, Stefanovic,
Zeman, Fränkel - Levchenko, T. Janssen, Rankovic - Sone, Amoah, Mustapha.
De
Graafschap lineup: Wevers -
Bot, Bakens, Berck Beelenkamp, Hermans - Smit, Duits, Culina - Valeev, van
der Haar, van Vossen.
De Graafschap earned their
first away point of the season against Vitesse this afternoon but stay at
the bottom of the table. Hans van der Haar, who last week scored the
match-winner in the 3-2 against NAC, put the visitors ahead in the 61st
minute, giving the Doetinchemmers hope of causing an upset in the Gelredome.
Kalle Sone grabbed the equalizer 5 minutes later and Mike Snoei's boys stay
in 11th place.

lose to Liverpool 0-1 |
28 Nov 2002
|
|
Vitesse had done well in their
2nd round UEFA Cup clashes with Bundesliga side Werder Bremen but failed to
continue that form with a very disappointing performance against a
lacklustre Liverpool. Theng half was hardly worth watching with the
Arnhemmers unable to put 'The Reds' under any pressure while the English
side were content to play safe. One good move by Liverpool, profitting from
Purrel Fränkel's ball-loss, was enough to give Michael Owen theng to
strike home the match-winner. Vitesse did better after the break and
threatened to punish the visitors for their unimposing play. However, just
as it looked as if the Gelredome crowd would have something to get excited
about it was Liverpool who came up with 4 chances to seal the match (3 for
Owen and 1 for Smicer). Excellent keeping by Dragoslav Jevric kept Vitesse
in the running but Rahamat Mustapha hit the post, substitute Kalle Sone
missed an easyng and Gert Claessens saw his injury-time effort stopped
by former Feyenoord-goalie Jurek Dudek. The match never lived up to
expectations and Vitesse's chances of causing an upset at Anfield Road must
be regarded as microscopically small.

misses UEFA clash, Janssen back |
28 Nov 2002
|
|
Vitesse's Belgian striker Bob
Peeters will miss tonight's UEFA Cup clash with Liverpool in the Gelredome
after falling ill. Trainer Mike Snoei also misses Nicky Hofs (out for rest
of season with injury) and Alexandar Rankovic (European match-ban) but
expects much of local 'tough-guy' Theo Janssen who's finally fit again after
suffering a fractured leg which has troubled him for the last couple of
months..

| Ruud
Knol back against Liverpool |
27 Nov 2002
|
|
Vitesse-trainer Mike Snoei has
included Ruud Knol in the squad to face Liverpool in Thursday's 3rd round
UEFA Cup clash in the Gelredome. The 21 year-old is clearly fit enough,
playing an hour's football in the 2-2 match between Jong Vitesse and Jong
Willem II on Monday, after being out of action for the last 3 months. Snoei
has an almost completely fit squad again with only Nicky Hofs absent through
injury while Yugoslavian midfielder Alexandar Rankovic is sitting out a 3
match European ban for a red card he picked up against Werder Bremen.

Polak - Booth, Cavens, Cairo
Vitesse
Lineup:
Jevric - Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Fränkel, Zeman - Claessens, T. Janssen,
Levchenko - Mustapha, Peeters, Amoah
Twente have finally managed to book
their first home win of the season, beating Vitesse 1-0 in the Arke stadium
with a Kurt van der Paar 12th minute goal.

| UEFA
3 match ban for Rankovic |
25 Nov 2002
|
|
UEFA have handed out
Vitesse's Aleksandar Rankovic a 3 match European ban for the red card he
picked up in the match against Werder Bremen. Vitesse have until Thursday to
launch their appeal against the 'punishment' but Rankovic will, in any case,
miss the 3rd round 1st leg match against Liverpool.

| Gelredome
sold out for Vitesse - Liverpool |
23 Nov 2002
|
|
The UEFA Cup clash between
Vitesse and Liverpool in the Gelredome next Thursday has sold-out within
three and a half hours of the tickets going on sale. More than 28,000
spectators will watch the match, far more than the 11,000 who turned up for
the match against Rapid Bucharest and exceeding even the 20,000 for the
clash with Werder Bremen. Only once before has the stadium been filled to
capacity for a European match and that was two years ago when Inter Milan
visited for a 2nd round UEFA Cup match.

| Vitesse
lose to Heerenveen 1-2 |
17 Nov 2002
|
|
Vitesse
lineup: Jevric - Rankovic, Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Fränkel - Mustapha, T.
Janssen, Levchenko, Claessens - Amoah, Peeters
Heerenveen
lineup: Vonk - Venema, Hansma, Hansson, Edman - Nurmela, Radomski, Jensen, Väyrynen
- de Jong, Denneboom
Two first half goals by Foppe
de Haan's boys give them a much needed three points in their attempt to get
free of the relegation zone. It was their first away win of the season and Mika Väyrynend for them in the 35th,
Johan Hansma making it 0-2 in the 40th. Vitesse took too long to recover
from the 1st half 'one-two' and only had Kale Song's 83rd minute consolation
goal to show for their efforts. Heerenveen squeeze past Zwolle on goal
difference while Vitesse slump to 8th.

| Vitesse
through after 3-2 v Bremen |
14 Nov 2002
|
|
Vitesse are through to the 3rd round of the UEFA
Cup after a thrilling match in which the Arnhemmers left the club's
financial problems behind them in Holland to put on a spirited display of
football against the Bundesliga side. The score could have looked very
different if Markus Daun, Aílton and Johan Micoud had put away their
chances in theng half and it was only Frank Baumann (24th) who found
the back of the net. Mladen Krstajic
(49th) gave the home team a 2-0 lead with a terrific shot but it also
inspired Vitesse to fight back and Evgeny Levchenko pulled one back
with a spot-shot in the 50th. Vitesse were reduced to 10 men when Alexandar Rankovic
was sent off in the 68th but Vitesse battled on and Gert Claessens drew them level in the
73rd with a great shot. Substitute Angelos
Charisteas put away the 3-2 for Bremen with almost his first touch of the
ball but the final celebratory and
deserved equalizer came in the 90th minute when Emile Mbemba scored to
give Vitesse a place in the 3rd round.

| Vitesse
fighting fit for UEFA Cup clash |
14 Nov 2002
|
Vitesse
trainer Mike Snoei has been able to travel with a fit, and almost
complete, squad to Germany for tonight's UEFA Cup clash with Werder Bremen.
The Bundesliga side have a reputation to maintain at home, having turned
around several matches that were headed for defeat into victories: Spartak
Moscow (1-4 into a 6-2 win), SK Brann (0-2 into 4-0), Olympic Lyon (0-3
into 4-0) and Antalyaspor (0-2 into 6-0). The Hungarian Krisztian Lisztes
and the Greek player Angelos Charisteas are the danger-men to watch.
Vitesse's likely lineup:
Dragoslav Jevric, Tim Cornelisse, Marian Zeman, Dejan Stefanovic, Purrel
Fränkel, Aleksandar Rankovic, Theo Janssen, Jevgeni Levtsjenko, Gert
Claessens, Matthew Amoah, Bob Peeters. |
| Verlaat
fit to face Vitesse |
14 Nov 2002
|
| Frank
Verlaat will be fit to play tonight for Werder Bremen when they face
Vitesse in the return leg of their UEFA Cup 2nd Round clash. Verlaat
underwent surgery last week to repair damage to a tear duct in one of his
eyes but has been training as usual without being hindered by the
after-effects of the treatment. |
| Willem

09 Nov 2002

|
NAC lineup: de
Vlieger - Jaliens, van Nieuwstadt, Janssens, J. Mathijsen - Landzaat - van
der Gun - Victoria - Mghizrat - Shoukov, Sektioui. Groningen
lineup: Jevric - Rankovic, Cornelisse, Zeman, Fränkel - Claessens, T.
Janssen, Levchenko - Mustapha, Peeters, Amoah.
This was definitely Evgeny Levchenko's week
and, after getting his first invitation to appear for his country, the
Ukrainian midfielder rounded it off by putting away his first goal for
Vitesse. Mike Snoei will be please with his team's performance and a
valuable three away points. Levchenkod the score with a spot-shot, Chris Janssens
equalizing in the 32nd before Marian Zeman (37th) and Matthew Amoah (injury-time)
decided the match.

| Hardworking
Ajax beat Lyon 0-2 |
30 Oct 2002
|
| Ajax
got off to a good start against the French French league leaders who were
unable to deal with the 2-5-3 fielded by Ronald Koeman. Ibrahimovich had a
golden opportunity to put his team ahead after a couple of minutes but
didn't connect well enough with the ball. A few minutes later a good run
by Trabelsi put Nigel de Jong in position to cross to Mido and the
Egyptian striker unselfishly sent the ball across goal for Pienaar to put
away in the 7th. The Amsterdammers gave away control of the match for most
of theng half but were unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty
for a foul on Chivu. To balance things out, the French side had a few
chances of their own, with Govou skimming the bar and Anderson's attempt
cleared off/behind the line by Chivu, the 'goal' being controversially
disallowed. Chivu was sent off in the 62nd for a very yellow card type
offence but Ajax stood up well and Van der Vaart, replacing Mido, still
managed to give Lyon some worrying moments. Van der Meyde replaced
Ibrahimovich who'd been losing the ball too often as Koeman tried to plug
all the holes. The Amsterdammers came under plenty of pressure in the
closing minutes but survived it all. Their late injury-time 2nd goal by
Rafael van der Vaart gave Ajax a very valuable away win, the young
international coolly slotting Maxwell's cross behind Gregory Coupet. |
| NAC
and Vitesse fail to score 0-0 |
25 Oct 2002
|
|
NAC
lineup: Gábor Babos - Jürgen Colin,
Marcel Koning, Rob Penders, Nebojsa Gudelj - Csaba Fehér, Orlando Engelaar,
Orlando Engelaar - Earnest Stewart, Ali Boussaboun, Kevin Bobson. Vitesse
lineup: Dragoslav Jevric - Alexandar Rankovic, Tim Cornelisse, Dejan
Stefanovic, Purrel Fränkel - Nick Hofs, Ricky Bochem, Theo Janssen, Evgeny
Levchenko - Matthew Amoah, Riga Mustapha.
This match totally failed to live up to the
expectations of a clash between two Ere Divisie sub-toppers with the
Arnhemmers refusing to attack and the Breda team unable to do so either. It
was 80 minutes of absolutely unentertaining football for the fans who'd
turned up to watch with only the remaining 10 minutes delivering something
resembling a contest. NAC finally dared to launch some attacks but only once
managed to cause goalie Dragoslav Jevric any problems when Bart van den Eede
came not-quite-close-enough to putting away a Kevin Bobson pass. Vitesse had
clearly decided not to risk another defeat after their 0-2 against Roda on
Tuesday home and were content to take home un point.
|
| Vitesse
still confident |
25 Oct 2002
|
|
Noone at Vitesse is ready to
start talking about a crisis just yet although the team's current 10th place
ranking is not what the Arnhemmers were aiming for at the start of the
season. The team did get off to a poor start but have picked up
considerably since and have a chance to show there's some continuity in
their improvement tonight against NAC. Vitesse have only earned themselves
11 points from 8 games so far and went down 0-2 at home to Roda on Tuesday.
Even so, trainer Mike Snoei and technical manager Jan Streuer are
confident that the level of performances which kicked-in with the UEFA Cup
away match against Rapid Boekarest is a sign of things to come.
"We play NAC tonight, followed by Werder Bremen in the UEFA Cup next
Thursday and Willem II next weekend. So this is really a crucial phase for
the team ", Snoei told provincial paper 'De Gelderlander'. "It
goes without saying that I had a bad night's sleep after the defeat by Roda
but the club has never received so many positive emials from fans after a
match. That can only give you the feeling that you're on the right path and
I know from experience that once the football starts to flow the results
will be achieved and the last few weeks are proof of that."

in 3rd place after 0-2 at Vitesse |

Vitesse
lineup: Jevric - Cornelisse, Rankovic,
Stefanovic, Fränkel - Mustapha, Levchenko, Hofs, Claessens - van Beukering,
Amoah.
Roda
lineup: Kujovic - Sonkaya, Brouwers, Luijpers, Filipovic - Vicelich,
Soetaers, Sonko, van Dessel - Cristiano, Anastasiou.
Roda climb to 3rd place after
this away win at the Gelredome. Vitesse began well but Matthew Amoah and
Jhonny van Beukering failed to convert the chances they got into
goals-in-the-back-of-the-net. Roda were less wasteful and made good use of
fast counters, going ahead just before the break with a goal from Edrissa
Sonko (43rd). Sérgio, who replaced Yannis Anastasiou for the 2nd act, put
away a spot-shot for the 0-2 in the 62nd.

| Peeters
misses Vitesse - Roda |
21 Oct 2002
|
|
Vitesse's Bob Peeters is going into
hospital to have a muscle injury examined that he picked up in Saturday's Ere
Divisie clash with Feyenoord. It continues to trouble the Belgian forward who
will certainly miss tomorrow's Ere Divisie clash with Roda. "At first it
wasn't causing me too much trouble but I'm now experiencing pain when walking."

19 Oct 2002
|
|
Vitesse
lineup: Jevric - Cornelisse, Stefanovic,
Fränkel - Levchenko, Rankovic, Amoah, T. Janssen - Mustapha, Peeters,
Claessens.
Feyenoord
lineup: Zoetebier - Emerton, Van Wonderen, Loovens, Van Haaren - Song C G,
Bosvelt, Ono, Van Persie - Buffel, Kalou.
Feyenoord, who've only earned
one point in their last three Ere Divisie matches, played without the
injured Patrick Paauwe and Pierre van Hooijdonk who were replaced by Glenn
Loovens and Bonaventure Kalou. Robin van Persie returned to the starting
lineup in favour of Chilean wing-half Sebastián Pardo. The changes didn't
help the Rotterdammers and Feyenoord drop more valuable championship points
with this 1-1 at Vitesse. The Arnhemmers were the hungrier side in theng half, putting their opponents under pressure and deservedly going
ahead in the 32nd when Matthew Amoah scored. Feyenoord took over after the
break but, apart from Thomas Buffel's equalizer in the 57th, didn't manage
to score the necessary goals, with Buffel missing their last injury-time
opportunity.

hire out Van Beukering & Dindsdag |
19 Oct 2002
|
|
Vitesse are prepared to
hire out striker John van Beukering and defender Michael Dindsdag. It's
better for the duo to get in some match action somewhere else as they're not
seeing much at the Gelredome and it's holding back their development, said
technical manager Jan Streuer. As yet there've been no enquiries for the
players who've both only made the one appearance this season.

The Dutch FA (KNVB) have
rescheduled two of Vitesse's Ere Divisie games due to the club's UEFA Cup
3rd round matches against Liverpool. Their home match against Excelsior,
originally planned for Saturday 30th November will now take place on
Wednesday December 18th and the match against De Graafschap has been moved
to December 1st from December 18th.

thinks Vitesse have a chance |
09 Oct 2002
|
|
Vitesse coach Mike Snoei is reasonably satisfied
with his team's UEFA Cup opponent Werder Bremen for the 2nd round of the
tournament. He'd rather play the Germans than Celta de Vigo or Sparta Prague
and thinks his team's in with a chance. "German clubs are always
strong, especially mentally. Celtic was actually my favourite, a club I've
dreamt about since I was a lad. Whoever we'd have drawn it would be a
difficult job for us but we're a more experienced side now after beating
Rapid Bucharest and we'll get the chance to show it."

draw Werder Bremen in UEFA Cup |
08 Oct 2002
|
|
Vitesse have drawn Werder Bremen
in the 2nd round of the UEFA Cup. They play host to the Bundesliga side on
October 31st in the Gelredome for the 1st leg and the 2nd leg at the
German's Weser Stadium is on November 14th. In theng round Vitesse
knocked out Romanians Rapid Bucharest (1-1 and 0-1) while Werder Bremen were
too strong for Ukrainian side Metallurg Donjetsk (2-2 and 8-0).

UEFA opposition for Vitesse |
07 Oct 2002

|
Vitesse face the prospect of some tough opposition in
the 2nd round of the UEFA Cup after the groups for the draw were announced.
Vitesse are in Group 4 together with Celta de Vigo, FC Porto, Paris
Saint-Germain, Sparta Praag, Werder Bremen and Celtic. The official draw takes
place tomorrow and we'll then find out which one of these illustrious teams the
Arnhemmers will have to beat in order to get any further in the tournament. They
are the only Dutch side to have survived theng round, but neither did
Chelsea, after knocking out Ronmanian team Rapid Bucharest.

| AZ
lose to Vitesse 1-3 |
06 Oct 2002
|
|
AZ
lineup: Moens - Tobiasen, Wijker, Van Galen, De Cler - Meerdink,
Robbemond, Lindenbergh, Opdam - Perez, Nelisse.
Vitesse
lineup: Jevric - Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Fränkel - Levchenko, Rankovic,
Amoah, Claessens - Mustapha, Peeters, Martel. Vitesse,
clearly inspired by their UEFA Cup success against Rapid Bucharest,
travelled to Alkmaar in confident mood and returned home to Arnhem with 3
valuable away points after another convincing performance. Amoah was the
Arnhemmers 'Man of the Match', having a part to play in all 3 goals. Gert Claessens
put them ahead from one of his passes after only 5 minutes. Rankovic and
Peeters had chances to increase the score but failed while AZ slowly got
into the game and Barry van Galen equalized for them from an Ole Tobiasen
pass on the stroke of halftime. The Alkmaarders looked the more
opportunistic team but Vitesse regained control of the tough, physical
match and went on to create the best chances. After seeing an earlier attempt cleared
off the line by Tim de Cler, Amoah headed in a Rankovic cross for the
2nd goal in the 67th. Amoah was there again to set up Nicky Hofs with the 3rd
to put the result
beyond doubt in the 90th.

| Zeman
misses AZ - Vitesse |
04 Oct 2002
|
|
Vitesse will miss defender Marian Zeman for the
Ere Divisie away match against AZ on Sunday. He's been temporarily suspended
by the Dutch FA's disciplinary committee for his red card offence in last
weekend's match against Utrecht. Although he's appealed against the 4
match-ban decision his case will not be heard till next week as Zeman was in
Romania for his team's UEFA Cup match preventing a hearing taking place
before this weekend.

| Snoei
lyrical about Vitesse's victory |
04 Oct 2002
|
|
Vitesse caoch Mike Snoei could hardly contain
himself as he talked to Dutch public broadcaster NOS after his team's UEFA
Cup victory last night gave them a place in the 2nd round of the tournament.
"It's super, terrific! Not only the result is great but also the way in
which we earned it!" Belgian striker Bob Peeters scored the winning
goal, a superb strike that repaid the confidence shown him by his trainer.
"I had a good feeling about Bobbie before the match - he did indeed
play very well and was very good on the ball. Our defence was also solid as
a rock with Marian Zeman playing an outstanding match."

Rapid
Bucharest lineup: Dolha - Rat, Perja, Iencsi, Maftei - Soava, Ilyes,
Maldarasanu - Badoi, Bratu, Niculae.
Vitesse
lineup: Jevric - Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Fränkel, Zeman - Claessens,
Levchenko, Rankovic - Mustapha, Peeters, Amoah.
Vitesse have survived their
visit to Romania with a 0-1 away win against Rapid Bucharest. They met far less
resistance than they probably expected and dominated the 2nd half. Bob Peeters
put away a Rahamat Mustapha cross for the match-winner in the 64th minute
with a carefully placed shot which sped into the top left-hand corner.
Matthew Amoah had already headed onto the line in theng half and hit
the bar with another header after the break, later blasting a hastily taken
shot over before
Peeters finally found the back of the net. The Arnhemmers held on through
the tense closing stages of the match to go through to the 2nd round of
the UEFA Cup.

| Vitesse confident ahead of UEFA clash |
03 Oct 2002
|
|
Vitesse
were lucky not to have lost their 1st leg home match against the clearly
superior Rapid Bucharest two weeks ago. Nonetheless, Mike Snoei's
players are confident of doing better in Romania.
Certainly in their recent match against Utrecht, when they played most of
the match with 10 men, the Arnhemmers worked and fought hard. Dutch teams
have a good record against Romanian teams, Feyenoord being the only club to
have lost in a European tournament, back in 1970 when they went out to an
away goal by UT
Arad. Heerenveen's defeat by National Bucharest was only the 2nd time that a
Dutch team have lost in Romania.
Rapid are currently plagued by injuries - former Feyenoorder Ovidiu Sabau is
doubtful, Constantin Schumacher (who was a constant worry for Vitesse in the
Gelredome) will not play after picking up an injury and the Belgian Manuel
Godfroid is also missing after picking up an injury at the weekend.
Vitesse trainer Snoei has less to worry about, apart from Didier Martel who
is suffering from an eye infection and Theo Janssen who's still having
problems with his leg. Good news is that Matthew Amoah is ready to
play!
|

leave Martel at home |
02 Oct 2002
|
|
Vitesse have been forced to leave
their French striker Didier Martel at home while the rest of the squad travel to
Romania to play the 2nd leg of their UEFA Cup clash with Rapid Bucharest. Martel
is suffering from an eye infection and will have to go into hospital to have it
examined before deciding whether it's sensible to allow him to fly out to join
his teammates. Good news for the Arnhemmers is that Matthew Amoah is fit again
after being troubled by a toe injury during the last couple of weeks. Vitesse
drew their home leg 1-1 and will need to put on a good performance if they are
to go further.

beat Vitesse 1-0 |
29 Sep 2002

Utrecht
lineup: Harald Wapenaar, Stijn Vreven,
Patrick Zwaanswijk, Karim Touzani, Pascal Bosschaart, Tom van Mol, Stefaan
Tanghe, Jean-Paul de Jong, Arco Jochemsen, Dave van den Bergh, Dirk Kuyt.
Vitesse
lineup: Dragoslav Jevric,
Tim Cornelisse, Dejan Stefanovic, Marian Zeman, Purrel Frankel, Gert
Claessens, Aleksandar Rankovic, Nick Hofs, Rahamat Mustapha, Bob Peeters,
Didier Martel.
Utrecht and Vitesse had a tough, physical general rehearsal
for their coming UEFA Cup 2nd leg matches later this week with an Ere
Divisie clash in the Nieuw Galgenwaard stadium. The visitors got off to the
better start thanks to the inspiration of Riga Mustapha. The aggressive play
forced referee Luinge to dig into his pocket and it wasn't long before
Vitesse were reduced to
playing the rest of the match with 10 men - after only 16 minutes Marian
Zeman was sent for an early shower for hitting out at an opponent. Utrecht's
Dave van
den Bergh scored the only goal of the match in the 28th for the Domstad side
who had a lot of trouble exploiting their superiority in numbers and finding
it difficult to subdue their opponents. There were plenty of chances for both teams after the break which made
for a lively spectacle, Utrecht hitting the woodwork twice through Jean-Paul
de Jong and Stefaan Tanghe while in the closing stages Emile Mbabma missed
the best chance of the match for Vitesse.

RKC Waalwijk's Rick Hoogendorp made
his
250th professional this afternoon as RKC looked
to restore a bit of confidence after their 4-0 defeat by PSV last weekend.
Vitesse could have done with a bit of a boost after their disappointing 1-1 UEFA
Cup result against Rapid Bucharest in the Gelredome on Tuesday but, for the second
time this week, the
Arnhemmers gave away a virtual-victory. Patrick van Diemen blasted in the equalizer for the Waalwijkers in the 90th after
Alexandar Rankovic had given Vitesse the lead in the 69th.
RKC had been the better team and deserved to take home a point so they'll be glad that Van Diemen felt like celebrating his 300th professional
appearance with a goal.
|
| Vitesse
- RKC preview |
21 Sep 2002
|
|
RKC Waalwijk's Rick Hoogendorp will make his
250th professional appearance against Vitesse tomorrow. The club's
top-scorer made his debut on August 28th 1994 for Den Haag in the 3-1 defeat
by TOP Oss. He played a total of 33 matches for Den Haag, 42 for MVV, 65 for
Dordrecht and 109 for the Waalwijkers, scoring 108 goals in 249 matches. In
his short spell abroad with Celta del Figo he failed to score in the 7
matches he played in the Primera División.
Vitesse will be looking to restore some honour after the disappointing 1-1
in de UEFA Cup match against Rapid Bucharest as they continue the search for
better form than they've shown in the Ere Divisie. RKC usually have problems
in Arnhem, only winning once in their last 13 visits, on March 15th 1992 when
they won 0-1 thanks to a goal by Raymond Beerens. If Matthew Amoah is fit in
time to play tomorrow it will be his 100th Ere Divisie match and his 85th
appearance for Vitesse after 15 for Fortuna. Evgeny Levchenko is set to play
his 50th Ere Divisie match while Louis Laros might put away his 25th Ere
Divisie goal. As far as RKC is concerned Patrick van Diemen will play his
300th league match, having made his debut on August 28th 1990 for Utrecht
against PSV. Van Diemen went on to play 35 matches for the Domstad side, 21
for AZ, 67 for NEC, 81 for Belgian side Anderlecht and 95 so far for RKC.

|
|
Vitesse trainer Mike Snoei still thinks his team have
a chance of pulling something out of the bag when they travel to Romania for the
return leg of their UEFA Cup 1st round clash with Rapid Bucharest. The
Arnhemmers looked to be heading for a welcome 1-0 home win when they were
shocked with an injury-time equalizer. "We're going to score at least once
in Bucharest," claimed Snoei. "In European matches it's always the
closing minutes which are the most dangerous and we saw that last night when our
opponents managed to slip one past us with only a few seconds on the clock. It
leaves us with a slightly bitter taste in our mouths but we'll get over that and
still have the advantage of having everything to play for while Rapid will want
to stop us scoring at all. It could be just enough to give us an
edge."

draw 1-1 with Rapid Bucharest |
17 Sep 2002
|
|
Vitesse
lineup: Jevric - Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Zeman, Fränkel - Levchenko,
T. Janssen, Hofs, Martel - Mbamba, Peeters.
Rapid
Bucharest lineup: Curca - Rat Dinca, Maldarasanu, Maftei, Iencsi -
Sabau, Schumacher, Soava, Godfroid - Bratu, Badoi.
Rapid Bucharest are the current no.2 in
Romania but hardly anyone was interested in turning out to see them play
against Vitesse in this
UEFA Cup match in Arnhem's Gelredome stadium which was more than half empty.
Vitesse got off to a fine start with two almost-goals in theng couple
of minutes - a Levchenko attempt almost deflected into the top left-hand
corner and a Nicky Hofs header that hit the bar. However, from then on it
was increasingly the visitors who looked likely to score with some dangerous
looking moves and goalie Dragoslav Jevric had to pull off a couple of alert
and agile saves to stop Rapid
going ahead. The far more
self-assured Romanian side created a couple of excellent chances to score,
led by their flexible and talented captain Schumacher. Rapid looked like
they sounded, displaying fast and technical football while Vitesse looked
increasingly uncoordinated and unhappy-with-themselves. The whistle for half-time couldn't have come to soon for coach Mike Snoei and a chance to
give his team a talking to! Whatever he said to them it seemed to have the
desired effect as his team grew in confidence during theng quarter of
an hour after the break. It came as no surprise when Bob Peeters pushed the
ball into the back of the net from close by to give the 10,000 fans who'd
bothered to turn up something to get excited about. The home team continued
to build up the pressure and Nicky Hofs had a fine header saved in the 80th.
Three minutes later Amoah connected well with a Didier Martel cross but the
header bounced off the inside of the post and refused to go in. It spurred
Rapid into making a few last-gasp attempts to get an equalizer. Bob Peeters
was taken off to be replaced by Mustapha for the last couple of minutes in
which Amoah had the best of the last Arnhem attempts. It looked to be
heading for a 1-0 at the whistle when, in injury time, Iencsi shocked
the Dutch team with a fine header and a well deserved equalizer.
Vitesse will have to really get their act together if they're to have any
chance of surviving a visit to Bucharest for the 2nd leg.

| Amoah
& Janssen doubtful for UEFA Cup |
16 Sep 2002
|
|
Matthew Amoah and Theo Janssen are the only Vitesse
players who are still doubtful to play in tomorrow's UEFA Cup clash with
Romanian side Rapid Boekarest. Amoah has a toe-injury and has already missed
last Friday's Ere Divisie match against RBC Roosendaal while Janssen is still
suffering from the after-effects of his broken-leg. The
21 year-old midfielder broke his leg in November 2001 in a match between Jong
Vitesse and Jong FC Twente. He made his comeback this season but it costs
him almost a full week to recover from the matches he's played!

Vitesse
lineup: Jevric, Cornelisse, Zeman, Fränkel, Levchenko, Hofs, T.
Janssen, Martel, Claessens, Peeters, Mbamba.
RBC
Roosendaal lineup: Aerts, Keller, Nascimento, David, Oliseh,
Fleur, De Graaf, Heije, Sillah, Tininho, Wooter, Vos.
Vitesse have revenged themselves for their 0-1
defeat earlier this season by Zwolle with a 3-0 win tonight. The Arnhemmers
were clearly motivated to erase the memory of the previous outcome of 14
days ago and the visitors were overwhelmed by the attacking style of Mike
Snoei's team. Belgian forward Bob Peeters returned to the lineup for the
first time this season and repayed the trust shown in him with an 11th
minute goal. It was a neat way for him to celebrate his 50th appearance in
the Ere Divisie. After the break Nicky Hofs scored a 2nd in the 68th while a last minute 3rd by
Kalle Sone secured the points to take Vitesse, who now have earned
themselves 6 points, past RBC, who have 4 points.

Matthew Amoah will be missing when Vitesse play host
to RBC Roosendaal tomorrow evening. The Ghanaian striker, who
recently extended his deal with the club, is suffering from a toe injury he
picked up in the match against Zwolle when he accidentally kicked goalie Johan
van der Werff's leg. The 21 year-old has been unable to train since and even has
problems pulling on his boot! Trainer Mike Snoei hopes they will be able to get
him fit in time for the Arnhemmers' UEFA Cup clash with Romanian side Rapid
Boekarest in the Gelredome next Tuesday.

extend contracts Knol and Amoah |
12 Sep 2002
|
|
Vitesse have extended the contracts of Ruud Knol
and Matthew Amoah - respectively till the summer of 2007 and 2006. The
Arnhemmers had been negotiating new deals with the 211 year-olds for some
time and technical manager is glad that both the talented players have
decided to stay at teh Gelredome side. "It was necessary for us to keep
players of their calibre if we're to stay in touch with the top
clubs."

|
Vitesse's Mamadou Zongo is scheduled to go back
into hospital for another knee operation after being out of action for more
than a year. The 21 year-old forward was thought to be finally almost
recovered from his knee injury but the same problem with his meniscus has
returned and further surgery is required to treat it! The Burkina Faso
striker played his last match for the Arnhemmers on February 24th 2001 in
the 2-1 defeat at Twente.

04 Sep 2002
|
|
Vitesse have added 16 year-old Austrian forward
Patrick Maier to their reserve squad. The talented player comes from Rapid
Wien and before that played at Austria Salzburg. Maijer is quoted as saying
that he was tired of the Austrian scene, is impressed with the quality of
the youth schemes in Holland and will be happy to get the chance to play for
Vitesse.

pulls out of Jong Oranje match |
03 Sep 2002
|
|
Vitesse's Theo Janssen has pulled out of the coming
Jong Oranje match against Belarus this Friday. The 21 year-old midfielder is
still suffering from a shin injury and needs to take some time out in order to
cope with the Arnhemmers' busy schedule immediately after this weekend's
internationals. Vitesse will be playing 3 matches in ten days against RBC
Roosendaal, Rapid Bucharest (UEFA Cup) and RKC Waalwijk. Janssen
missed much of last season after breaking his left shin-bone last year and
is keen to avoid repeating that particular piece of misery. Although he's turned
out for all of Vitesse's recent matches he's not exactly looked 100% fit.

Vitesse 1 - 0 |
31 Aug 2002
|
|
Zwolle
lineup: Van der Werff - Doesburg, R. Roelofsen, Kras, Schol - Promes, M.
Roelofsen, Van der Haar, de Ridder - Lim-Duan, Van Steeg.
Vitesse
lineup: Jevric - Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Dingsdag, Fränkel - Levchenko,
Hofs, T. Janssen, Claessens - Amoah, Mbamba.
The 'experts' had written Zwolle off before the
season had even kicked-off and given them no chance of surviving in Ere
Divisie-land. They remain, however, undefeated after 3 matches and caused a
surprise upset tonight by defeating Vitesse 1-0 in the Oosterenk stadium.
Richard Roelofsen, who'd worn the Arnhemmers' colours between 1991 and 1993,
scored the only goal of the match for Peter Boeve's team with a distance
shot in the 57th minute. His namesake, and teammate, Marco Roelofsen also
had reason to celebrate as it was his 450th professional appearance. Roelofsen's
goal gave Zwolle their first win of the season while Vitesse's Dejan Stefanovic departed for an early shower in the last minute
of official time after picking up his second yellow card of the match.

lose to Ajax 1 - 2 |
25 Aug 2002
|
|
Ajax have broken their run of defeats at the
Gelredome with a 1-2 win this afternoon. Cristian Chivu's 2nd half goal gave
the Amsterdammers the points after Matthew Amoah had put Vitesse ahead in
the 16th minute and Petri Pasanen had equalized in the 51st. Ajax fielded an
eleven without wingers
Sikora and Van der Meyde as Ronald Koeman experimented with a 4-3-3-
formation. Ajax played with Ahmed Hossam and Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front but
Vitesse looked the more threatening team in theng half. Emile Mbamba
created theng for theng goal giving Amoah the chance to put it
away in the 16th minute. Nick Hofs and Mbamba failed to convert otherngs while Rafael van der Vaart and Mido also failed to find the
back-of-the-net. Theo Janssen hit the bar with a freekick after the break
but, later on, Dragoslav Jevric's failure to clear Zlatan Ibrahimovic's shot
gave Petri Pasanen the chance to slot home in the 51st. Christian Chivu
slammed home a surprise winning goal from a freekick which remained
unanswered by the home team's Kalle Sone, Mbamba and Janssen who all missed
opportunities to level the score and retain their unbeaten home record
against the Amsterdammers.

|
25 Aug 2002
|
|
According to a story in provincial paper 'De Gelderlander', Vitesse trainer Mike Snoei is in conflict with his French
striker Didier Martel. The coach feels that the 30 year-old should, with his
depth of experience, be taking more responsibilty on-and-off the pitch than he currently is! Martel
missed theng match of the season last weekend against Groningen due to
a bout of flu.

find two-week sponsor!! |
24 Aug 2002

Vitesse
have found themselves a new shirt sponor - but only for two weeks! The
refuse company Sita will be decorating the shirts of the Arnhemmers for
the coming 14 days and are the first main sponsor the club has managed to
find since energy giant NUON pulled out in 2001. Vitesse chairman Jos
Vaessen is quoted as saying that, although some people are convinced that
such temporary sponsors are a viable 'means to an end',
he hopes to find a suitable long-term candidate within the near future. In
the meantime he is of course grateful to have the support of Sita. |
| Weekend's
Topper - Vitesse v. Ajax |
23 Aug 2002
|
All eyes (or at least a great many) will be
focussed on Sunday's clash between Vitesse and Ajax. The Arnhemmers won the
last 5 matches against the Amsterdammers in the Gelredome and are unbeaten
at home in their last 21 league matches. The last time Vitesse lost at home
was to Willem II in a 1-2 defeat on April 7th 2001. Since then they've won
13 matches and drawn 8 at home while, in total, they've beaten Ajax 6 times,
drawn 6 and lost 5. The goal balance so far is Vitesse 27 and Ajax 26
scored. Last season they won 3-1 when André Bergdølmo put Ajax ahead via a
penalty before goals by Jhonny van Beukering, Ruud Knol and an own goal by
Bergdølmo gave them the points. Also of note, Ajax's Wamberto got a red
card in the dying minutes of the match. The match marked Ronald Koeman's
return to the Gelredome after swapping Arnhem for Amsterdam in December
2001. Victor Sikora followed his example this summer while fellow teammates
Nikos Machlas and Ferdi Vierklau have also previously played for Vitesse.
Some other statistical odds and sods:
If Machlas gets a chance to substitute and scores twice he'll reach the
magic 100 Ere Divisie goal barrier. His first was for Vitesse on November
17th 1996 away against NEC, after which he put away 59 more while for Ajax
he's so far netted 38.
Bergdølmo could play his 250th league match on Sunday after 115 for
Lillestrøm SK, 83 for Rosenborg BK and 51 for Ajax.
Belgian striker Bob Peeters could score his 50th Ere Divisie goal, having
put away 39 for his previous club Roda JC and 10 for Vitesse since his
transfer in the summer of 2000.
Last but not least, Rafael van der Vaart will play his 50th match for Ajax.

18 Aug 2002

Groningen
lineup: Beukenkamp, Elshot, Schoenmakers, Boekweg, Florén, Hoogstrate,
Matthijs, Hugo, Ikedia, Drent and Kamata.
Vitesse lineup: Jevric,
Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Knol, Fränkel, Mbamba, T. Janssen, Claessens, Van
Beukering, Amoah and Levchenko.
Vitesse have repeated their successes of the
last two seasons by winning at the Oosterpark stadium. Groningen began well
enough and immediately put the visitors under pressure, new
signing Pedro Kamata showing off his skills by weaving past two
defenders to serve up his teammate Martin Drent who headed in ther
past Dragoslav Jevric in the 21st minute. The celebrations were short lived
indeed as poor defending by Claus Boekweg and Paul Mathijs gave Matthew Amoah
an easyng to equalize a minute
later. Vitesse grew in confidence under the leadership of Theo Janssen and
Amoah put the Arnhemmers ahead in the 67th. Groningen ran out of steam in
the heat and Amoah's 2nd goal was enough for the
Gelredome side to take home the points.

Stefan Nanu's injury is worse than hoped for after

Vitesse will miss Stefan Nanu for the start of the
season after the defender twisted his left knee in training on Thursday. The 33
year-old Romanian, who's in his 4th season at the Gelredome, will be undergoing
keyhole surgery today to see how bad the damage is. It's feared that his
meniscus is damaged which could mean an absence of 4 weeks! Purrel Frankel will

Vitesse have lost their friendly against English
Premiership side West Ham United in Southend-on-Sea 1-0. 'The Hammers'
looked the sharper side from the whistle and were 1-0 up on the half-hour
with a goal by Frédéric Kanouté. The French striker had no trouble
beating goalie Dragoslav Jevric in de 27th minute when a sliced pass set him
up in front of goal. The East-End team remained in control after the break
although Theo Janssen was close with a free-kick shortly after half-time but
saw his attempt turned away for a corner.

| Jevric
back as no.1 Vitesse goalie |
6 Aug 2002
|
|
Vitesse trainer Mike Snoei has given his vote of
confidence to goalie Dragoslav Jevric who now takes over from Jimmy van
Fessem as the Arnhemmers no.1 keeper. Snoei made known his decision to
'promote' the 28 year-old Yugoslavian after Sunday's friendly against Lierse
SK (1-1). "Neither keeper has had much to do during the series of
friendlies we've played and the technical staff have had to look at their
performances in the training sessions to make an assessment and have
concluded that Jevric is currently the better man for the job". Jevric
has played for Vitesse since 1999, losing his place as no.1 goalie to Van
Fessem under Ronald Koeman last season but, after Koeman's departure, was
reinstated by caretaker-trainer Edwin Sturing.

Gert Claessens looks set to miss the start of the
season after the Vitesse midfielder pulled a thigh muscle during a pre-match
warming-up last week when the Arnhemmers played a friendly against TOP Oss. A
period of rest has been prescribed as the best cure! Claessens missed two months
of last season due to a pinched nerve and is naturally disappointed to pick up
this latest injury as his pre-season preparations had been going so smoothly.
The 30 year-old Belgian player has been with the club since January 2001,
scoring 9 goals in 34 matches.

off to Ajax after Fulham surprise! |
21 July 2002
|
|
The world of football is always capable of
surprising you with its crazy antics and the Victor Sikora soap is
developing into yet another one of those stories that make you laugh, cry,
or drive you mad! After it looked certain that Vitesse's winger was
finally on his way to a new club, English Premiership side Fulham, we now
hear that the South-London club are making a problem of the transfer-fee
that was supposedly already agreed by both clubs! Vitesse have now offered
the Dutch international to Ajax (must be Ronald Koeman's lucky day) after
Fulham said that they want to spread out the €5.5 million Euro fee over
four-years! This is totally unacceptable to the Arnhemmers and their
chairman Jos Vaessen has announced on Dutch public broadcaster NOS' sports
programme "Langs de Lijn" that he will be going back to
the negotiating table with Ajax who can have Sikora for €4.5 million
Euros in cash! What a world, huh!

Vitesse have signed Yugoslavian midfielder
Aleksandar Rankovic on a contract for next season. The 23 year-old Rad
Belgrado player, who will be officially presented to the press today,
played 45 minutes in the weekend's friendly against Theole which was won
9-0. His arrival coincides with Victor Sikora's departure for English
Premiership side Fulham. Technical manager Jan Streuer had explained last
week that the income from the sale of the striker was necessary before the
Arnhemmers could consider buying any new players.

three more days to make an impoved/acceptable offer for Victor Sikora
before finally shutting the door on a transfer. Neither club have met the

11 July 2002
|
|
Vitesse are targeting Yugoslavian
midfielder Alexandar Rankovic and the 23 year-old Rad Belgrado player
should be arriving in Arnhem for a trial next week. Vitesse want to
reinforce their squad with a defensive midfielder and the Gelredome side's
technical manager Jan Streuer has confirmed their interest but also added
that the youth international is only one of several candidate. Vitesse will
first have to sell Victor Sikora before they can afford to buy any new
players.

gets 3 days to leave Vitesse |
09 July 2002
|
|
Victor Sikora has been
given three more days to sort out the long rumoured move to Ajax or the
more recent candidate Fulham! If there's no contract signed with a new
employer by Thursday he'll have to rejoin the Vitesse squad and prepare
for the new season. Depending on the stories you may have read he's
either going to Amsterdam, because that's his preferred destination, or
he's off across the channel to English Premiership side Fulham because
it's his dream to play there! Ajax have made an offer of €4 million
Euros and followed it up with an improved offer of €4 million plus
midfielder Richard Knopper while Fulham are said to have offered Vitesse a
straight €6 million Euros! However, Mike Snoei has said that the offers
on the table are still €2 million Euros short of what Vitesse want!

missing at Vitesse's first training |
08 July 2002
|
|
Victor Sikora was conspicuously absent during
Vitesse's first training session of their pre-season preparations this
morning. Technical manager Jan Streuer explained on the club's web-site
that they wanted to highlight the new squad for the coming season and
Sikora obviously has his mind on other things (a move to Fulham or Ajax
for example). The new trainer Mike Snoei said, "I wanted to
start this morning with a squad who are motivated to give their all for
Vitesse and Victor clearly has other plans. He has the ambition to take
the next step in his career and, though I'm not the person to decide who
goes or stays, I think he'll be better off at another club. I've also
spoken to Dejan Stefanovic about his situation and he's made clear he
wants to stay in Arnhem and I expect him to stay."

Kreek moves to AEK Athene |
26 Jun 2002
|
| Vitesse's
Michel Kreek is moving to play for top Greek club AEK Athene. The
midfielder, whose contract with the Arnhemmers ran till 2003, has signed a
deal for two seasons with an option for a third but there is no
information concerning the transfer fee the Greeks have paid. Kreek's
agent Alex Kroes, from MTV Sports International, said there had been
interest from Birmingham City, Stoke City, Derby County, Italian side
Modena and a couple of German clubs but AEK were the most serious
contender. Kreek had asked for permission to leave Arnhem a few months
back, saying that he wanted a new challenge. The 31 year-old former Ajax
player now has the transfer he wanted and a new opportunity to shine
abroad as he has in the past with Italian clubs Padova (1994-96) and
Perugia (1996-97).
