| Milan
closing in on Jaap Stam |
19 Jun 2003
|
AC
Milan are hoping to team up Lazio's Jaap Stam with his fellow
international team-mate Clarence Seedorf. Stam
joined Lazio from Manchester United in August 2001 after being forced to
leave the Premier League due to the publication of his biography in which
he was not very flattering towards Untied boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
Since his arrival at Lazio, Stam has been plagued by the club's inadequacy
to pay his wages and has become furious at the club's plans to pay a
percentage of wages with cash, and make up the rest with shares in the
club.
Stam is now taking the club to court and if the Italian FA should decide
that Lazio have defaulted in paying their players, then Stam would
be allowed to leave on a free transfer.
Milan's general sporting director Ariedo Braida said his club were
considering a bid of €13 million Euros for the Dutchman to improve the strength in depth of
their defence
Braida: "Stam is a defender who interests us because he is a top
player"
Although Lazio's chairman Ugo Longo categorically denied that Stam
had been sold but fuelled the speculations by saying:
"These reports are rumours without any backing whatsoever.
What is sure is that Lazio are in dire need of cash, and the quickest way
to get out of their precarious financial situation is by selling their top
stars, Jaap Stam included. |
