Ajax midfielder Jan van Halst,
who was recently informed by trainer Ronald Koeman that
he was no longer needed, has signed a one and a half year contract with
Vitesse. Van Halst who is renowned for his fighting spirit had also attracted
the attention of Belgian club AA Gent. Born in 1969, Jan van Halst
signed for AFC Ajax in 1999. Before coming to Ajax van Halst played
for FC Utrecht, second division club FC Wageningen and FC Twente. Van
Halst's nine year spell at Twente came to an end in 1999, when he won a move
to Ajax. However, after a fine start, Van Halst fell foul of then coach Co
Adriaanse and spent the majority of 2000/01 on loan at SC Fortuna Sittard.
But with the appointment of Ronald Koeman as Adriaanse's successor during
the 2001/02 campaign, Van Halst won back his place at the Amsterdam ArenA
after the winter break, fulfilling a vital role as the club regained the
Dutch titel.
