Holland scraped through in their euro 2004 qualifier this evening coming
back from a goal down to force a narrow 2-1 win over Moldova. Vadim
Boret shot Moldova in to the lead in 17th minute, but fortunately for
Holland, Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy was once again on
target when he scored the Dutch equaliser. With just 6 minutes remaining on
the clock Mark van Bommel struck the winning goal with a somewhat lucky
free-kick that slipped under the body of Evghenii Hmaruc. Moldova's coach
was justifiably proud of his side's performance saying: "This
is the best game since I became coach," he said, praising the whole
team. It was
second time we have had a very good start but the team lost their way. Step
by step we will get to a level where we can win the next game."
Dutch coach Dick Advocaat was very dissatisfied with Holland's
performance saying: "It
was a stupid game, "There were lots of problems with the Dutch team, we
didn't look ready to play. It
was a very bad start for my team, I am satisfied with the final score,"
With the Czech Republic
beating Austria, the automatic qualifying spot from Group 3 now appears to
be a straight fight between the Czechs and the Dutch. The
two sides drew 1-1 in Rotterdam on Saturday and both have 10 points.
