| Ajax
contract-improvement problem Pienaar |
20 Feb 2003 |
In an interview in the weekly football magazine "Voetbal
International", Ajax's technical director Leo Beenhakker has said that he is convinced
that contract talks with key players Rafael van der Vaart and Nigel De
Jong will soon be completed. Initially Ajax wanted to extend Van der Vaart's
contract beyond the existing 2006 deadline but have instead only increased
the midfielders salary. The exact details of John de Jong's new offer are
not yet known. Ajax striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has attracted the
interest of several foreign clubs including an offer from Bettis Sevilla
last week, is also hoping to start negotiations with Ajax soon for a new
improved deal.
In the interview, Beenhakker is less positive about the chances of holding
onto South African talent, Steven Pienaar. Pienaar, who has played well all
season and who also put on an impressive performance against Arsenal on
Tuesday has been trying to force an improved deal all season but still
hasn't managed to gain Leo Beenhakker's confidence somehow. Unfortunately
for Ajax fans the ex-Feyenoord coach does not share the same opinions as Ajax's
coach Koeman and Holland's European Player of the Century, Johan Cryuff,
who are convinced that Pienaar possesses all the qualities of a world class
player. Perhaps due to Beenhakkers blindness, Pienaar could well be forced
to find a club where the back-room bosses have less say in the matter.
