| Vitesse
lose at Liverpool 1-0 |
12 Dec 2002

Vitesse came out and played as if
they had nothing more to lose, at a half-full and
less-than-usually-atmospheric Anfield Road, and took the chance to show
they could play better football than two weeks again in the Gelredome. After
a couple of early opportunites, Bob Peeters had the perfect chance to put
them ahead but threw it away, leaving Michael Owen to show him how, his
first attempt blocked by Jevric but the English international slid the
rebound under the goalie for his 19th European goal. Vitesse were a bit
dismayed by the goal but hung on and almost had an equalizer but Amoah had
his fine distance shot saved by the very solid Chris Kirkland. Vitesse
played a good 2nd half, with several players putting on spirited
performances (including the young Michael Jansen who cleared a shot
off the line close to time) but never quite looked like getting an equalizer
while Liverpool, while less than impressive, did what was necessary.
