Jari Litmanen back at Ajax!

30 Aug 2002

Jari Litmanen is returning to Ajax after 3 unhappy years without a regular teamplace at either Barcelona or Liverpool! He's been clearly unhappy at Liverpool since his move there from Barça, making few appearances (to the disappointment of many Liverpool fans) and was unlikely to see much action in the future. Manager Gerard Houllier gave him permission to start looking for a new club but a brief flirtation with the Amsterdammers some weeks ago ended when Ajax said they couldn't afford his wage demands and a possible move to Turkish side Galatasaray was turned down by Litmanen. The 31 year-old will sign an initial deal for 4 months with the possibility of staying on for a further year-and-a-half if both parties are happy with the situation in January 2003. There are still a few formalities to be ironed today before the deal is official and technical director Leo Beenhakker will be meeting with Liverpool representatives to sort them out. Ajax's goal is to have Litmanen registered with UEFA before 16:00n hours today in order to make him eligible for Champiosn League football. Otherwise, according to Beenhakker, the aim of the transfer will have missed its mark!
