PSV went home with a point after a mediocre
first half's football was concluded with a 2nd half in which the visitors
got to grips with the match and had their chances but failed to convert
them. Guus Hiddink had made clear his intention to take no risks in getting
through the first leg match without giving too much away. The French
had problems coping with the tactic and it wasn't till the 21st that Jelle
ten Rouwelaar was tested and he dealt well with the face to face
confrontation with Khalilou Fadiga. Mateja Kezman and Arnold Bruggink had
the best of the PSV chances who were lucky that Remco van der Schaaf didn't
get a red card in the 4th minute and it aws no surprise when he was replaced
close to halftime to prevent any further damage. PSV had the best of the
chances in the 2nd half with Mateja Kezman coming close in the 52nd and
Wilfred Bouma denied by the French goalie Cool. The last 10 minutes were
worrying for PSV but they clung on till the whistle and can look forward
confidently to the 2nd leg at home.
