| Sparta
to terminate contracts! |
09 July 2002

Sparta have made a plea to the Dutch FA (KNVB)
to allow them to terminate the contracts of six players: Monteiro, Van
Dalen, Mesaoudi, Sanou, Conteh and Nelstein as well as those of
their training-staff, Van den Berg, Franken, Langerak and Wijnen.
Langerak hung up his boots at the end of the season to become a trainer
for a much lower salary. The players' legal representatives have rejected
the deal on offer which is a month's salary for every year on the
individual contracts. The club is faced with debts of €4 million Euros,
including €1.3 million Euros owed the players' pension fund (CFK).
Sparta hope that Rotterdam city council will decide on Thursday to bail
the club out with a loan of €2 million Euros and that the Dutch FA
(KNVB) will then give them their licence for next season. Good news is
that Sparta have managed to find a new shirt sponsor, although noone is
naming names yet, and that Brazilian defender Marília has signed a new
deal for two years!
