Oranje beat Austria 0-3

16 Oct 2002

Oranje had an easy 0-3 win against Austria in Vienna with a major role for 'prodigal son' Clarence Seedorf who scored theng goal. The midfielder continued the form he's been showing at AC Milan, his powerful runs causing all kinds of problems for the Austrian defence. His 15th minute goal was a fine example of the kind of confidence that has begun to reemerge in the Dutch national team, Patrick Kluivert's back-heel pass setting up Seedorf with a not-to-be-missed opportunity. "Football is easy and you should never make it difficult," exclaimed a grinning Kluivert after the match. Only five minutes later Seedorf's fine freekick hit the crossbar but Philip Cocu was in the right place at the right time to slot home the rebound. Roy Makaay took care of the 3rd in the 27th minute to put Oranje top of Group 3 with 6 points from 3 matches, just ahead of the Czech Republic on goal-difference. Oranje have not conceded a goal in their last 5 matches and if they continue their current form against Germany in their November 27th  friendly can equal the record set in 1987 of 6 games without a goal-against!
