| Van
der Lem facing up to new challenge |
17 Sep 2002
|
Ajax's Gerard van der Lem
has been hailing his new mission as Saudi Arabia's technical director as
a real challenge. In his first (telephone) interview with Saudi media the newly-appointed Dutch manager Gerard van der Lem
seemed fully aware he is facing a completely new challenge after signing a four-year contract to guide the Saudi
Arabian national team.
"This is the first time in my coaching career that I take charge of a national team,
in this respect the Gulf region-job is heralding in a new phase," the Dutch manager told daily paper Al-Riyadh on Tuesday.
"From a personal point of view it is a whole new experience, and my target is to
steer Saudi Arabia to the World Cup finals in Germany in four-years time. "This is exactly what I have underlined for the Saudi officials. I deeply
believe that the four-year contract will provide me with a suitable length
of time to reach this specific goal, while also re-establishing the status of Saudi
Arabia as a leading football nation," he added. "Now that I have been given the chance to guide the national team, I will
put all my experience at the disposal of Saudi footballers. We have many challenges lying ahead of us prior to the World Cup campaign,
which will in itself provide a unique opportunity to better assess the capabilities of all the players at my disposal," he concluded.
Van der Lem made it clear he will arrive in the Saudi capital some time
during the first two weeks of October and that a press conference will be held at the end of
comprehensive talks with the local FA officials.
"Till that time, I won't be ready to elaborate on anything connected with the contract and
any plans lying ahead for either party," underlined the Dutch supremo.
Once more our grateful thanks to Mohamed S.
