Ajax friendly against Zamalek in January?
|
25 Aug 2002

CAIRO, August 24: Eager to claim a resounding
public relations success following the one achieved by arch rivals Al-Ahly
two days back, Cairo giants Zamalek are reportedly engaged in talks with
Ajax Amsterdam to entertain them in the Egyptian capital next January.
“We have already received encouraging signals from the Dutch club,” said
Zamalek club president Dr. Kamal Darwish. “We are about to tackle the
specific date now, preferably between January 28th and 31st.”
Al-Ahly have been phenomenal successful in staging friendly matches against top-ranked
European opposition over the last couple of years, beating Real Madrid 1-0
last summer before flooring Italian giants AS Rome 2-1 early this
month.
The matches attracted 100,000 spectators each, and the money generated enabled the Reds to tackle the new season on solid financial
ground.
An Ajax friendly here in Cairo will provide the local faithfuls with a unique
opportunity to see their national team's centre-forward, Ahmed “Mido”
Hossam, in action for the mighty Dutch side, two years after leaving Egypt to
play his club football in Belgium before moving to Holland where he has established himself as one of the
Ere Divisie's most feared strikers.
