Ajax win SuperCup after 3-1 against PSV

11 Aug 2002

The SuperCup match kicked-off later than planned due to a blockade of the PSV players' bus by unhappy supporters in Eindhoven. PSV got off to a more assured start than Ajax and Mateja Kezman had a couple of earlyngs before a Rommedahl cross found the Yugoslav waiting to head in ther in the 10th minute. Van der Meyde hit the side netting minutes later as Ajax fought back. Sikora missed THE chance of the 1st half when his attempt to put the ball between Watereus' legs was smothered when the goalie simply sat on the ball. Van der Meyde got a yellow card minutes later for a dangerous sliding action which ended with Bouma receiving the winger's boot in his rump, resulting in a heated confrontation. Kezman had a shot stopped by the fine young goalie Maarten Stekelenburg before Rafael van der Vaart proved once again how invaluable he is for Ajax, picking up a Maxwell through ball on the edge of the box, turning neatly to slice it past Waterreus for the equalizer in the 42nd. Stekelenburg showed again how good he is by stopping a Van Bommel blast to keep the score level before the half-time whistle. Trabelsi got a Kezman elbow in the face as the injury-time seconds/minutes ticked on.
After the break Kezman missed a great chance when a sloppy back pass by Pasanen left him with only Stekelenburg to beat but his attempt was too nonchalant. In the 54th minute Galásek saw Trabelsi break down the right, crossed to the Tunisian wing-back who crossed perfectly for Mido to head in the 2-1! Kezman's 2nd 'foul' of the match earned him a yellow card in the 58th. Ajax were looking stronger and stronger as the minutes ticked by while PSV seemed to weaken mentally as their control of midfield slipped out of their hands. Vennegoor of Hesselink was brought on in the 65th to line-up alongside Kezman at the cost of Vogel, while Bruggink dropped back behind the front-duo. Stekelenburg stopped a Bruggink shot but had to give away a rebound that was (fortunately for Ajax) cleared. Trabelsi then broke free down the middle but was held back by Ooijer who got a yellow card only to miss a chance in front of the Ajax goal minutes later. Victor Sikora was replaced by Wamberto in the 74th. Van der Vaart did it again in the 77th when he was served up by Maxwell, taking his time to carefully and casually slot it past a helpess Waterreus for the 3-1. Mido was replaced by Zlatan. Galásek picked up a yellow card for a foul on Van Bommel in the 79th and Bruggink was replaced by Ramzi. As the clash drew to an end Ajax grew in strength while PSV looked increasingly irritated by their inability to impose themselves on the match. The Amsterdammers will be glad to add to their collection of silverware, winning this Cup for the first time in their 'new' stadium and breaking the run of ArenA defeats by PSV!
