Excelsior lose to AZ 1-2

20 Aug 2002

Excelsior lineup: Malkowski - Swerts, Olfers, Breuer, Van Dieren - Boutahar, Mtiliga, Lopes, Koswal - Holman, Pinas.
AZ lineup: Moens - Tobiasen, Wijker, Lindenbergh, de Cler - Meerdink, Robbemond, Opdam, Van Galen - Nelisse, Perez.

AZ booked their 2nd win of the season tonight. The Alkmaarders had few problems dealing with Excelsior tonight and booked their 2nd win of the season. Although the Kralingen side were at least as good as the visitors during theng half but were sloppy in defence and failed to convert their chances while the Alkmaarders did. Oscar Moens had precious little to do while his opposite number Zbigniew Malkowski had more than he'd have liked. Barry van Galen put the visitors ahead in the 33rd and Robin Nelisse increased their advantage in the 44th. Excelsior-trainer Adri Koster made a few changes during the break René van Dieren and Said Boutahar came off, replaced byuMounir El Hamdaoui and Michel Fernandes Bastos. Kenneth Perez and Martijn Meerdink could have put AZ even further ahead but failed while Excelsior equally failed to find the back of the net until Patrick Mtigla's consolation goal which was too late to swing the match around.
