Ajax proved too much for freshly promoted Zwolle
and are now unbeaten in 9 consecutive Ere Divisie matches although their
performance was not an impressive one. Tonight was memorable for the return
of jari Litmanen who displayed his talents as if he'd never been away. The
crowd was chanting his name long before, and long after the match, and he
returned from the dressing-room for his Player-of-the-Match award. Justly
so, as he was clearly the superior player on-pitch and everyone, including
Zwolle coach Peter Boeve, enjoyed the skills on show. Zwolle had
unexpectedly beaten Vitesse but goals by Richard Witschge and Cristian
Chivu (penalty) eventually gave the Amsterdammers the points. Jari Litmanen was
invaluable in spying any possible hole in the opponents defence and fed
Zlatan Ibrahimovich ball after ball but the young striker was either unable
to get them on target or found keeper Van der Werff blocking his way to
goal. The Fin also saw a header of his own making stopped by the Zwolle
goalie. It took until the 58th
minute for Witschge, who came on for Maxwell, to find the back of the net and
Chivu's 72nd minute
spot-shot to seal the result which gives Ajax 2nd place in the table behind
PSV who won 4-0 against RKC.
