Ajax needed all three points this
afternoon in their clash against Vitesse Arnhem to keep in touch with leaders PSV. Anything other than a win at the Amsterdam ArenA would
have proven fatal for the champion's title defence. Before the match trainer
Ronald Koeman stated "We must win if we want to stay close behind PSV
and maybe become the number one again in the future," adding We depend
upon PSV, that's clear. The only thing we have in our own hands is that we
can beat PSV in Eindhoven. But we must hope that PSV lose some points along
the way. Ajax were without Maxwell and Andy van der Meyde and star player Rafael van der Vaart
who still needs a
couple of reserve games before Koeman will consider him for first-team
action.
Steven Pienaar, who
has just penned a new contract extension,d the score today in the Amsterdam
Arena in the 27th minute of the first half . Although both sides had a
number of good chances the firework remained until the dying seconds of the
match when Pienaar was once again on target for the final score.
