Groningen's worries keep on growing, making things anything but easy for new trainer Ron Jans in his first weeks at the Oosterpark stadium. The club's sick-list gets longer and longer with Melchior Schoenmakers the latest to pick up an injury - he's got a problem with an abdominal muscle. Emmen lose to Groningen 0-1

07 Nov 2002

Groningen have booked themselves a place in the 2nd round of the Amstel Cup with a 0-1 win at and against Emmen. The Northerners, currently bottom of the Ere Divisie table, were simply stronger than the Eerste Divisie table-toppers. It was Groningen's first win under their new trainer Ron Jans who had been looking after Emmen before taking up his new post. The Oosterpark side didn't have to work hard to beat their opponents and were even given a helping hand when Donny de Groot was sent for an early shower after picking up a red card on the half hour. Once they were reduced to 10 men Emmen were unable to cope with Groningen, who even had a Martin Drent goal dissallowed close to half-time. After the break Groningen went on the hunt for a goal but were not very convincing in their efforts and it was a bit of a relief when Joost Broerse's distance shot found the back of the net.

Two goals in the early part of the 2nd act put an end to the Groningen resistance and from then on they were no match for the visitors. Korean international Song set the freshly capped Belgian international Thomas Buffel to put the Rotterdammers ahead in the 47th and 'Japanese Wizard' Shinji Ono added a 2nd in the 55th. The win gives Feyenoord the points and takes them into 3rd place on 20 points from 10 games.

Groningen want Senden

28 Oct 2002

Groningen are seriously interested in adding Roda's Ger Senden to the squad at the Oosterpark stadium as a possible replacement for the departed Mohammed Allach. "Some people from Groningen have taken a look at me a couple of times to check how fit I am and now they want to do business." Senden's deal with the 'Kerkrade Crew' runs out at the end of this season but the club's technical director Nols Hendriks is reluctant to let him go before then. He made his first appearance in the starting lineup this season last Saturday in the 5-0 win against De Graafschap and knows that he's mostly had to be content with a role as substitute in Limburg. "It's a difficult situation as I've mostly been happy here with Roda, even though I'm currently only a reserve, but I feel I've still got a couple of good years in me yet and it remains to be seen whether they will be spent here or elsewhere."
Ron Jans new Groningen trainer

28 Oct 2002

FC Groningen have announced that the former Oosterpark player Ron Jans is the club's new coach, replacing trainer Dwight Lodeweges who resigned last week . After failing to sign ex-Utrecht trainer Frans Adelaar, whose current employer Akratitos wouldn't let him go, and also not being able to interest their 2nd choice, PSV's assistant trainer Erwin Koeman, the club have decided to install their 3rd choice.  Jans, who also previously played for PEC Zwolle, Roda JC and Veendam, was top amateur side Achilles'94's trainer for 4 years and spent 3 years looking after amateur team AVC. He gained his professional coaching diploma in May and has since been assistant trainer at Eerste Divisie club Emmen.
Groningen want Frans Adelaar

25 Oct 2002

FC Groningen have set their sights on former Utrecht trainer Frans Adelaar to succeed the recently resigned Dwight Lodeweges. Adelaar is currently trainer with Greek side Akrakitos but has told Dutch provincial paper 'Nieuwsblad van het Noorden' that he'd be willing to hold talks with the Oosterpark club. Adelaar's departure from Utrecht last season was an unexpected one, even though it was common knowledge that there a lot of behind the scenes friction involving the coach and technical director Han Berger.  "I'm of course totally unfamiliar with the 'ins and outs' of the club but I do know they are similar in many ways to Utrecht, a real people's club. It's undoubtedly a club where I could feel right at home." Groningen would like to present a new face next week Wednesday and the names of Co Adriaanse, Jurrie Koolhof, Danny Blind and Frank Rijkaard have all been mentioned in the press but, for the time being, the club's technical manager Henk Veldmate is remaining tight-lipped.
Lodeweges resigns at Groningen

21 Oct 2002

Dwight Lodeweges has resigned from his post as Groningen's coach after deciding that there's no longer sufficient support at the club for him to continue. The 44 year-old former Zwolle trainer joined the Oosterpark side in July 2001 but his team has had a disastrous start to the current season and the latest defeat (3-2 by RKC) was the last straw. Groningen remain stuck at the bottom of the table with one point from 8 games. Lodeweges is now the second Ere Divisie trainer to resign this season after John van 't Schip's exit at Twente during the pre-season preparations.
Groningen lose to RKC 2-3

20 Oct 2002

Groningen lineup: Beukenkamp - Elshot, Boekweg, Kruiswijk, Florén - Matthijs, Krstev, Van Gessel - Ikedia, Salmon, Tuhuteru.

RKC lineup: Van Dijk - Boulahrouz, Nikiforov, Van den Berg, De Graef - Molhoek, Van Diemen, Fuchs, Cornelisse - Janssen, Hoogendorp.

RKC had veered off course the last few weeks but today completely outplayed their Oosterpark opponents with a leading role for Yuri Cornelisse who scored 2 of their 3 goals. The new 4-4-2 tactic, introduced after much internal soul-searching involving the players, didn't help to produce a more effective Groningen while the return of Sander van Gessel and Rold Landerl equally failed in the inspiration department. Yuri Cornelisse put the Waalwijkers ahead in the 7th minute while Groningen failed to take advantage of a penalty awarded them to draw level, Van Gessel's wet spot-shot easily finding Rob van Dijk's arms. The home team never really recovered and in the 47th minute Peter van den Bergh headed in the 0-2, Cornelisse putting away the 0-3 from a lightning fast counter. Supersub and goal-getter Martin Drent clawed one back for the home team and Glen Salmon made the final score respectable on paper with a 2nd but life will continue to look grim for Groningen after this latest defeat.

Change of tactic for Groningen

15 Oct 2002

During their training camp in Marbella, Spain he chosen to field a 4-4-2 system instead of the customary 4-3-3. The Oosterpark side's technical staff hope that it will halt the loss of possession that's characterised the team's game of late. They've had a disastrous start to the season with only un point from 7 games.
Allach and Groningen part

11 Oct 2002

Mohammed Allach and Groningen are parting ways, effective immediately, after the 29 year-old defender and coach Dwight Lodeweges exchanged harsh words on Monday. The conflict has been brewing for some time and finally came to a head earlier this week - Allach being seen as a 'disruptive' influence while a compromise was now out of the question after Monday's events. "There's no way back", said technical manager Henk Veldmate, "but we'll respect his contract (which runs till 2004)." The Moroccan arrived in Groningen during the summer of 2000 after a spell with Excelsior. He's played 63 matches in the last two seasons since joining the Oosterpark side who are currently bottom of the table with only un point !
Groningen's Van Gessel back from injury

09 Oct 2002

Groningen's Sander van Gessel has played his first match since picking up an ankle injury in the Amstel Cup match against Veendam last August. As soon as we know more we'll let you know!

"It's good to get together in different suroundings to reexamine things, "said coach Dwight Lodeweges in 'Dagblad van het Noorden'.
Groningen's Hoogstrate on injured list

04 Oct 2002

Groningen will have to miss Jordi Hoogstrate for the foreseeable future after the midfielder picked up a knee injury in Wednesday's Ere Divisie match against NEC. Groningen lineup: Beukenkamp, Elshot, Boekweg, Matthijs, Kruiswijk, Ikedia, Hugo, Hoogstrate, Broerse, Salmon, Tuhuteru.

Groningen are in crisis, sunk as they are at the bottom of the table, after yet another defeat. They provided poor opposition for NEC and failed to create anyngs worth mentioning tonight. The northerners started the match with Claus Boekweg and Hugo back in the side after spells on the injured list. Neither side made much of an impression in the theng 30 minutes till Youssouf Hersi put the home team ahead in the 33rd. The referee, Mr. Luijten, had to be replaced at halftime after being injured.  Groningen-trainer Dwight Lodeweges tried to turn things around by bringing on Krstev for Hugo and Curovic for Hoogstrate but it didn't help. NEC remained in control while Groningen failed to get any chances in front of goal. Dennis de Nooijer and Frank Demouge came close with headers before De Nooijer sealed the points with a 2nd goal. NEC climb to 6th place while Groningen stay sunk in 18th.

01 Oct 2002

Henk de Haan will be returning soon to the club where he started his playing career when he starts a new job with Groningen with their commercial department. He joined the Oosterpark side as a 20 year-old and the former defender turned out for the Northerners between 1982 and 1984. De Haan played a total of 26 matches for the club with the highlights being his appearances as substitute during the UEFA Cup matches against Atlético Madrid (at home) and Inter Milan (away) in the 1983/1984 season. Groningen beat Atlético 1-0 but lost 5-1 in the following round to Inter Milan in the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
AZ rout Groningen 4-1

27 Sep 2002

AZ lineup: Moens - Tobiasen, Wijker, Lindenbergh, De Cler - Meerdink, Robbemond, Opdam, Van Galen - Perez, Nelisse.

Groningen lineup: Beukenkamp - Elshot, Allach, Kruiswijk, Florén - Matthijs, Hoogstrate, Broerse -Ikedia, Salmon, Tuhuteru.

AZ routed Groningen tonight thanks to a hattrick by Kenneth Perez. Groningen were able to field 1st choice goalie Roy Beukenkamp who had picked up a calf injury but was deemed fit enough to play. I didn't help much as the Oosterpark side went 1-0 down after only two minutes when Perez scored his first of the match. The Alkmaarders continued to exert pressure on the visitors and were rewarded by Robin Nelisse's goal in the 20th for the 2-0. Groningen were in disarray and had little to say in response to the home team's agression. Perez scored his 2nd of the evening in the 32nd minute and the 3rd on the hour for the 4-0. Groningen trainer Dwight Lodeweges decided it was finally time to make a substitution and Dejan Curovic was replaced by Glen Salmon. It was too little, too late and there was little consolation for them in Raymond Bronkhorst's 90th minute goal.

Groningen miss Martin Drent against AZ

27 Sep 2002

Groningen will have to miss Martin Drent for their Ere Divisie match against AZ tonight as the striker is still suffering from a back-problem that was troubling him last week before the match against Utrecht. Keeper Roy Beukenkamp is also doubtful to start tonight as he's picked up a calf injury and coach Dwight Lodeweges has added 3rd choice keeper Jeroen Lambers to the squad. Magnus Johansson, Sander van Gessel and Rolf Landerl will also miss tonight's match. The Oosterpark side trainer will, however, be able to call on the services of youth international  Jordi Hoogstrate who missed last week's match against Utrecht due to a calf injury.
Groningen and Utrecht draw 0-0

22 Sep 2002

Groningen lineup: Beukenkamp - Elshot, Allach, Kruiswijk, Florén - Matthijs, Krstev, Broerse - Ikedia, Salmon, Tuhuteru.

Utrecht lineup: Wapenaar - Vreven, Touzani, Zwaanswijk, Van Mol - Tanghe, De Jong, Bosschaart, Arts - Kuijt, Gluscevic.

Groningen finally won their first point of the season and actually got off the bottom rung with this point against the Domstad side. Utrecht were wanting to put the memory of their painful 4-1 UEFA Cup defeat in Warsaw behind them and will have to be content with 5 points from 5 games. The result was a disappointment for trainer Dwight Lodeweges as the Oosterpark team hit the woodwork 4 times in the match. After a mediocre first half Groningen finally looked a bit dangerous while Utrecht were content to try for a counter. Groningen continued to have the best goal-scoring chances with Pius Ikedia hitting the bar and Joost Broerse's attempt cleared off the line. Three minutes before time Dejan Curovic hit the post.

Excelsior get first win 4-2 v.Groningen

14 Sep 2002

Excelsior lineup: Malkowski - Swerts, Olfers, Breuer, Mtiliga - Van Dieren, Holman, Boutahar - Koswal, Lopes, Pinas.

Groningen lineup: Beukenkamp - Elshot, Allach, Matthijs, Florén - Hoogstrate, Krstev, Broerse - Ikedia, Salmon, Tuhuteru.

Excelsior got their first and really convincing win of the season with this defeat of Groningen. It looked for a while as if the visitors would be able to cope with the Rotterdammers after Paul Matthijs put the Oosterpark side ahead in the 36th minute. However, Adrie Koster's team turned on the juice with a Brian Pinas equalizer a minute later and Steve Olfers gave the home team the lead in the 40th. Joost Broerse drew Groningen level in the 57th but Cecilio Lopes returned the lead to the home team in the 69th and Said Boutahar took the score to 4-2 in the 75th.  Groningen are now the only Ere Divisie team not to have won a point.

Groningen lose to Ajax 1-3

01 Sep 2002

Groningen lineup: Beukenkamp - Elshot, Boekweg, Allach, Florén - Hoogstrate, Matthijs, Krstev, Broerse - Ikedia, Tuhuteru.

Ajax lineup: Stekelenburg - Trabelsi, Bergdølmo, Chivu, O'Brien - Galásek, Van der Vaart, Maxwell - Van der Meyde, Mido, Sikora.

Ajax had an easy win this afternoon thanks to Groningen's overly-respectful and passive approach which gave Victor Sikora and Rafael van der Vaart all the room they needed to harrass the home team's defence. The Amsterdammers didn't even play particularly well and their fans, who were banned from showing their faces in Groningen by the local mayor, missed absolutely nothing in terms of footballing entertainment. Ajax went ahead early on when Sikora set up Van der Vaart with an easy chance to beat Roy Beukenkamp in the 13th minute, the outstanding young talent slamming the ball high into the back-of-the-net for the 1-0 and his first goal of the season. The Ajax duo were also in on the second of the Amsterdammers' first-half goals -  Zlatan Ibrahimovich (who replaced the injured Mido in the 36th) picked up the ball in midfield and fed it through to Sikora. The winger then passed it on to Van der Vaart who tapped in the low pass from close range to give Ajax a comfortable 2-0 lead to take into the dressing room at halftime. Six minutes into the 2nd half Sikora served up Andy van der Meyde with a fine cross which was neatly headed in for the 0-3.  Hugo and Martin Drent were brought on for Hoogstrate and Ignacio Tuhuteru but it didn't help the Oosterpark side very much, although they did put together some attacking moves which gave them several opportunities to score. Hugo finally put one away for the home team in the 75th when he hit in the rebound off Pius Ikedia's shot, which had been parried by Maarten Stekelenburg.  With the final whistle in sight(?) they then allowed Ajax to take over once more but the Amsterdammers neglected to add to their tally. Nonetheless, Ronald Koeman will be more than happy with the three away points and a top-of-the-table position.

PSV beat Groningen 1 - 0

24 Aug 2002

PSV lineup: Waterreus - Bøgelund, Ooijer, Faber, Bouma - Vogel, Van Bommel, Bruggink, Rommedahl - Robben, Kezman.

Groningen lineup: Beukenkamp - Elshot, Schoenmakers, Boekweg, Florén - Allach, Hoogstrate, Matthijs, Broerse - Krstev, Ikedia.
PSV hammered Groningen 0-8 last season but showed none of that display of footballing superiority last night. In the dying stages of the match they squeezed out a late 82nd minute goal, courtesy of Johann Vogel, for a weak 0-1 victory. It gives them, however, shared pole position in the Ere Divisie along with RKC who booked a surprising win away at Heerenveen. The match kicked-off 10 minutes later than the rest of last night's duels in order to allow all the fans who'd booked a ticket to actually find their seats in the Oosterpark stadium. Groningen put up a spirited resistance and, despite bringing on Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink as extra firepower up front in place of defender Ernest Faber, the score was still 0-0 after 80 minutes. The home team and their following were starting to hope for a minor upset but Vogel's goal ended that dream.

Homesick Kamata returns to France

24 Aug 2002

Pedro Kamata will not be playing for Groningen against PSV today after the left-winger, who'd only just arrived at the Oosterpark side from French club Auxerre, decided that he was so homesick he just had to return home to France. Groningen and the French youth international, who'd signed a deal for 4 years, will be discussing the consequences during the coming days.
Groningen lose to Vitesse 1-2

18 Aug 2002

Groningen lineup: Beukenkamp, Elshot, Schoenmakers, Boekweg, Florén, Hoogstrate, Matthijs, Hugo, Ikedia, Drent and Kamata.
Vitesse lineup: Jevric, Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Knol, Fränkel, Mbamba, T. Janssen, Claessens, Van Beukering, Amoah and Levchenko.

Vitesse have repeated their successes of the last two seasons by winning at the Oosterpark stadium. Groningen began well enough and immediately put the visitors under pressure, new signing Pedro Kamata showing off his skills by weaving past two defenders to serve up his teammate Martin Drent who headed in ther past Dragoslav Jevric in the 21st minute. The celebrations were short lived indeed as poor defending by Claus Boekweg and Paul Mathijs gave Matthew Amoah an easyng to equalize a minute later. Vitesse grew in confidence under the leadership of Theo Janssen and Amoah put the Arnhemmers ahead in the 67th. Groningen ran out of steam in the heat and Amoah's 2nd goal was enough for the Gelredome side to take home the points.

Van Gessel misses season kickoff

15 Aug 2002

Sander van Gessel is going to miss the start of Groningen's season, not only being absent for ther against Vitesse but also several of the following duels. The 25 year-old picked up an ankle injury during the Oosterpark side's Amstel Cup 1-1 draw against Veendam on Tuesday after an unfortunate collision with opponent Marnix Kolder. The ankle bone is bruised and there are also torn ligaments which will have to heal before he can return for duty. Initially he thought that the ankle was broken but x-rays revealed that his fears were unfounded although there's always a possibility of a small fracture. It'll be a few days before the swelling goes down and then a scan can be made to see exactly what the extent of the damage is. It's the latest injury blow for Groningen who already miss Rolf Landerl and Magnus Johansson.
Boekweg extends Groningen deal

08 Aug 2002

Claus Boekweg is poised to extend his stay with Groningen for one-more-year. The 36 year-old defender returned to the Oosterpark stadium during last season's winter stop only to pick up a knee injury which kept him out of action for 2 months. On his return he was soon on the sick list again with a cartilage problem! He's match-fit again and determined to banish the memory of last season's disappointment as he looks forward to yet another season at the club where he began his professional career.
Groningen welcome back Milko Djurovski

01 Aug 2002

A large group of Groningen fans are wetting their lips at the prospect of seeing one of the club's all-time favourites back in action. Macedonian striker Milko Djurovski will be playing with his old attacking partner Hennie Meijer for an Oud-FC Groningen eleven against the current Groningen lineup during the club'sday. The duo were a strike-force to be reckoned with during three seasons at the beginning of the 1990s. Djurovski had his debut, and most successful season, in 1990/91, scoring 14 goals. His partner Meijer, born in the former Dutch colony of Suriname, put away 12 and went on to score a total of  49 goals in 5 seasons while Djurovski scored a total of 26 goals before leaving the club in 1993.

Groningen can field Kamata

24 July 2002

Groningen have been granted a temporary permit by the Dutch FA (KNVB) to field the French striker Padro Kamata in official league/cup matches and he'll be making his debut for the Oosterpark side in the coming Amstel Cup qualifying round match against ACV on August 10th. According to their own rules FIFA should by now have announced a verdict in the conflict between Groningen and Auxerre over the transfer.  The French side have refused to cooperate in the transfer and the French FA have in turn refused to release Kamata which led to Groningen approaching FIFA with the request to intervene, which they have so far failed to do! Auxerre can expect to receive compensation for the money they've invested in the striker and FIFA are also the body who decides how much that should be!

Groningen waiting to field French signing

22 July 2002

Groningen are still waiting for the required documentation to arrive at the Oosterpark stadium before they can field their new French signing Pedro Kamata in official league and cup matches. Chairman Jaap van der Linde hopes it will be simply a question of a few days before the papers are in his hands. The club still don't know exactly how much they're going to have to pay for the player because the final bill will include the cost of his apprenticeship at AJ Auxerre. Kamata has already shown what he can do by providing three assists in the 7-0 friendly win against WVV.
Paul Matthijs new Groningen captain

13 July 2002

Defender Paul Matthijs is Groningen's captain for the coming season, taking over from goalie Roy Beukenkamp who asked to be relieved of the responsibility. Beukenkamp feels that it's better for the team if the captain is one of the other players and trainer Dwight Lodeweges has asked Sander van Gessel to substitute for Matthijs when necessary.

Last chance for Groningen's Boekweg

02 July 2002

Claus Boekweg has been given till the end of July to be declared fit enough to earn himself a contract to play for Groningen. There's a contract for one year waiting for the 36 year-old defender, who has been plagued by a string of knee- and calf- injuries, if he's declared fit to play. If not he will be offered a job training the youth squad! Boekweg played for Groningen between 1986 and 1995 before moving to FC Zwolle who he left last season after a row with coach Paul Krabbe. He returned to the Oosterpark stadium but then his tale of injury-woe began which resulted in him making only two appearances last season!

15 Jun 2002

NAC badly need some firepower up front now that Brazilian duo Sergio and Cristiano are gone and Earnest Stewart is also entering his last season with the club.

Rolf Landerl has shoulder operation

30 May 2002

Rolf Landerl has undergone surgery on his shoulder to get him fit in time to join his new club Groningen from Fortuna this summer. The forward picked up the injury during his debut for Austria in their 6-2 thrashing of Germany where his tackle on Sebastian Deisler put the German out of action for the World Cup and gave Landerl the wrong kind of headlines!

He's the latest signing for the Eagles as they prepare for next season, other recent additions being Martijn Kuiper, Bas Wijnen (Vitesse), Bram Marbus (Sparta), Dennis Hulshoff (Twente) and Michel Kruijer (Excelsior).

Boussaboun to leave Groningen

15 May 2002

Ali Boussaboun has been told by Groningen that he can start looking for a new employer. After the latest conflict between the club and the player concerning his lack of professional attitude the Oosterpark side have decided it's best for both parties if the striker moves elsewhere!
