injury looks more serious than first expected and the Swedish striker could

Fosblad: "If he doesn't get better through rest alone then an
operation is the next alternative. In
that case we would go in and clean out the inflammation. We will make a
judgement after three weeks of rehab-training
If rest does not give any beneficial results and the striker is forced to
undergo surgery later in the summer, then this would sideline Ibrahimovic
for around two months, causing him to miss pre-season training and the
kick-off to the new season.
However, Ibrahimovic is confident that surgery will not be needed, saying:

I have been given a rehabilitation program which I will follow."

| Mido
planning court action against Ajax |
03
Jun 2003
|
In an interview on Dutch TV last night
the editor of the influential weekly football magazine 'Voetbal
International' Johan Derksen stated that Ajax's out of favour striker
'Mido' is planning to take legal action against the club.
Mido believes that the €12 million Euros that Ajax are asking for the
Eqyptian striker is out of proportions and the 'enfant terrible' is
demanding that he be allowed to leave Ajax transfer-free this summer.
Mido is convinced that there was legally no reason for him to be banished
from Ajax's squad and is now planning a court battle where he will be
basing his case on the rights to work.
Although Derksen believes that 'Mido' has a strong case, FootballNL
believe that it would be unlikely that a judge would be willing to set a
preference that allows players to force a free transfer by displaying
obnoxious behavior and making themselves impossible.

Ajax hope to secure their second place this
afternoon as rivals Feyenoord face top of the table PSV while the Amsterdammers
face strugglers De Graafschap. With just three games to go Ajax
are just one point above Feyenoord, a victory this afternoon over De
Graafschap would give them a four point lead over the Rotterdammer and would go a long way to securing their
second place. Despite relegation threatened De Graafschap's low position Ronald
Koeman does not believe that this guarantees Ajax the three points . Ronald Koeman
"People might think if we start the
game well and get the early advantage maybe De Graafschap won't be motivated for
the whole game because they have more important matches still to come, but I
don't expect that. They need every point at the
moment." De Graafschap have never
won in Amsterdam and it is more than likely that the visitors will start with a defensive line-up with
additional defender Milan
Berck Beelenkamp in the lineup as extra defender while Hans van de Haar will be
De Graafschap's lone striker.

NEC- Ajax |

Although Ajax's injury problems are at a low
with only defender Johnny Heitinga and Brazilian winger Wamberto out of action,
the Amsterdammers have replaced the injury woes with suspension problems and
will have to face NEC this afternoon without their Rumanian captain Christian
Chivu and their Swedish striker Ibrahimovic, due to their behavior in last
month's Amstel Cup clash against Feyenoord. Due to the bans, Jari Litmanen is
now set to replace Ibrahimovic up front while Abubakari Yakubu is the most
likely candidate to step in for Chivu in defense. Trainer
Ronald Koeman still believes that his side must fight for their last chances for
the title and know that if they lose today that PSV will have a nine point lead
over their rivals with only three games remaining.
Koeman: "I have the idea we are
recovered from the tough weeks when we played in the Champions League. The
end of the season is at sight, but the players are not that tired. In
the last few weeks we have played good and fresh football. I
hope we can see that kind of football back in the results."
Koeman has also warned his team that
fifth placed NEC will not want to drop any more points this season as they head
towards European football. "NEC
are well organised on the pitch," he warned. "This team are hard to
beat."
NEC's trainer, former Dutch
international Johan Neeskens believes his team have the correct attitude towards
this match and knows that his team are motivated for this afternoon's clash.
Neeskens: "Of course it's a game in which you play for the three points.
It's nothing more than that. But I know that my players have a different view.
They are working towards this game with a
different attitude. They are more motivated, so it seems, and that's always the
same if we play against a top three team. The
players are not under big pressure. We
still have four games to go, so many teams can qualify for next season's UEFA
Cup. We just have to do our job. We
must gain as many points as possible and at the end of the season we will see
were we are."

first keeper. As things are now
Bogdan Lobont is the first choice. "There
is also interest in me from Germany and Italy and I want to end my career
on the highest level. In both
these cases I'm sure of being the first keeper. That makes the choice so
much harder." Wapenaar also added "If
I say no Ajax will directly focus it's attention on FC Twente keeper
Sander Boschker. Ajax already have spoken with him too,"

"It's true the boy interests us. Indeed we have already asked Ajax
for half his registration. About figures, obviously, I cannot tell you. We
wait for a reply from Ajax."
Roma transfers chief Franco Baldini will meet with Ibrahimovic this week
to discuss a five-year, £1 million-a-season, deal.
Roma are reported to be meeting Ajax in London next week to hold further
talks.
In spite of Ibrahimovic's absence from Ajax's squad yesterday due to his 5
match ban, the Amsterdammers had no trouble in finding the back of the
net, which has often been the case this season when Zlatan has been
sidelined.

number of severe bans have been imposed on Ajax and Feyenoord key players
for their involvement in the turbulent Dutch
FA Cup semi-final between the two clubs . Pierre van Hooijdonk, who
received a red card from referee Luinge, has been banned for 2 matches
plus one suspended, for allegedly kicking Ajax's Belgian defender Jelle
van Damme. After the match Van Damme stated that Van Hooijdonk hadn't
touched him but during the Dutch FA's (KNVB) disciplinary commission, Van
Damme confirmed Luinge's report.
Ajax will have to miss skipper Christian Chivu after the KNVB decided to
impose a 3 match on the Rumanian international for an aggravated action
against Asian star Song. Song declared before the commission that it was
impossible for him to avoid Chivu's arm movement.
Ajax's Van Damme and Feyenoord's Song's testimonies breaks a silent vow
under the players to not give damaging evidence against one another but
with both clubs separated by just one point for the coveted second place,
it raises the question of the club's have influenced their players in any
way.
The disciplinary commission have also more or less spelt out the end of

match-ban to one for 6 matches for his elbowing of Feyenoord's Gerard de

price tag too high for Milanese |
01 May 2003 |
|
It looks as if Ajax's Rumanian captain
Christian Chivu will not be moving to Italy this summer now that
Italian giants Inter and AC Milan are cooling their interest. Both clubs have
been following Chivu for the last year and have indeed held several
meetings with Chivu's agents. However it is now believed that both
Milanese clubs have been deterred from making a move for the players now
that Ajax have insisted that he may not leave the club for less €17
million Euros. Real Madrid and Arsenal are also
keen to sign Chivu and certainly Real have the wealth to afford the
player. However Ajax are now indicating they want to hold onto their

contract when his current deal expires in the summer. It was generally
believed that the Finn's one year contract would not renewed after yet
another disappointing season. The injury prone striker has only
played 19 matches since rejoining the Amsterdammers last August but
nonetheless Koeman still regards Litmanen as a genuine asset for the club
and has now said "We would love to see him play here next season too."
But we also know that his output was not big this season."

Ibrahimovich could be trying to force a break with Ajax after
demanding yet another wage increase. According to reports in the Dutch

attention of a number of Europe's big clubs. AC Milan are planning to use next

(ankle), Stefano Seedorf (foot), Victor Sikora (leg), Henk Timmer (leg), Hatem
Trabelsi (leg), Wamberto (foot) and Andre Bergdolmo (thigh) are all absent and

According to Koeman none of the injured players will be fit in time for
tonight's home game against Roda JC but the trainer is hopeful that some of the
injured players will be able to play in Ajax's Champions League match against AC
Milan next week. Light
at the end of the tunnel is that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is fit and after a good game
against Feyenoord the striker will start against Roda. "He
played very well against Feyenoord. The only problem is the co-operation between
Zlatan and Rafael van der Vaart hasn't worked as it has to," admitted
Koeman but it will be better when they both play more games."

doesn't help a lot. The emotional
value is so much higher. I hope that the Ajax family will mobilise itself to get
the cup back where it belongs, in the Ajax Museum." 85-year-old Wim
Schoevaart who works in the museum as their archivist, said: "This is a
great loss for the club. Besides the
Championship trophies, this was the most important prize that Ajax has won in
those years. The Gouden Meerbeker was unique. I

|
Dutch international goalkeeper Edwin van der
Sar has been targeted by Ajax for a possible return to the club. Although Ajax
have two world class goalkeepers in their midst's, at 1.4 million euros
Van der Sar would be a welcome bargain. When Van der Sar made the switch to
Fulham he was told by boss Jean Tigana he would be the first of a
series of superstar signings. However, Fulham's cash flow dried up and
the club are now struggling for Premiership survival.

and Milan draw 1-1 in Amsterdam |
08 Apr 2003 |
AC
Milan held Ajax to a 1-1 draw in the Amsterdam Arena this evening in a
lively match with plenty of attacking football at both ends of the pitch.
However, with chances few and far between neither side could find the net.
Ajax's 5th consecutive Champions League draw was certainly more impressive
than their previous 4 performances and if they can repeat this evening's
show during the return leg in Milan then they still have a good chance of
reaching the semi-finals.
Before the match trainer Ronald Koeman said he would be satisfied with a
0-0 score, knowing the a score-draw in Milan will be sufficient to go
through to the next round.
Koeman was also pleased to see Ajax's key players - Rafael van
der Vaart, Cristian Chivu, Bogdan Lobont, Nigel de Jong, Steven Pienaar
and Ibrahimovic - avoid the yellow cardsas a booking would see them
suspended for the return leg in Milan.
After the match Ronald Koeman said on Dutch TV that he was very satisfied
with Ajax's performance and saying that if Ajax can createmore chances in
the next match they have a good chance of eliminating the Milanese. |

Ajax
have confirmed their interest in talented Korean striker Kim Dong-hyun,
Ajax would dearly love to sign the player who was voted Asia's most valuable
youth player in 2002 and already look to
have a head start over rivals PSV and Feyenoord. The rising soccer star of
20, has already
emerged as the "target" of scouting by prestigious soccer clubs in
Netherlands like PSV and Feyenoord Kim has aslo confirmed, that
both PSV and Feyenoord had recently offered him a test and that even Guus Hiddink, who had led the Korean national team up
to the semifinal in the last World Cup, visited Kim`s parents and made an offer.
Whereas most offers for Asian talents have been made to national team members or pro soccer
players. Considering the custom, it is an extremely rare occasion for a
renowned team to make an offer to a high school student. This rare
event, however, demonstrates how great a potential Kim possesses. Kim stands
185cm, and weighs 80kg. Nonetheless, he runs 100m in less than 12 seconds.
In addition, he has excellent techniques and skills of making goals.
Furthermore, he is a striker who uses his left leg in making goals, which is
hardly found among Korean players.

Cosmin Contra has advised his former club AC Milan to buy his fellow

him. He can play many roles, just like Paolo, and he can adjust with ease.
I would like to come back to Milan with him but if they have to
choose, I would tell them to buy him.
He is good in the air, takes free-kicks and penalties, and he also works hard at trying to improve his game."
Milan have often displayed their interest in Chivu but up till now they are not
prepared to meet Ajax`s asking price.

environment is unique and very peaceful and I am learning a lot as far as my
soccer career is concerned,"

where he grew up.
On his last birthday , Pienaar donated food parcels and toys to children
living with their mothers in "Sun City" prison.
Pienaar is also concerned about children growing up on their own because their

"Coming from a disadvantaged background without role models to guide
me has enforced the spirit of humility and encouraged me to invest back in
my community by helping the needy," he told City Press. "I was raised by a single parent who was lucky to support me and my
three siblings. I am not doing this for publicity but out of love. I have an
insight of what it is like growing up without knowing when your next meal
is," said Pienaar.

Ajax striker Jari Litmanen has been
recalled for Finland's Euro 2004 qualifier against Italy on March 29
alongside with Ajax defender Petri Pasanen and Heerenveen midfielder Mika
Nurmela. Litmanen's selection comes as
somewhat of a surprise as the 32-year-old has been dogged by injuries since his return to Ajax last

for some of the game at least. "I would be happy in this situation if Jari could play at least 45

play the occasional 45 minutes for them.

| Ajax
go through to C.L. quarter finals |
19 Mar 2003
|
|
Ajax's young squad held their own against AS Roma
this evening forcing a well earned 1-1 draw. The Amsterdammers were given a
lightening start after Andy van der Meyde soloed down the left flank before
neatly rounding off with a hard drive from just outside the penalty area. For the rest of the
first half AS Roma dominated slightly and Cassano's 25th minutes equalizer
did not come as much of a surprise. During the break, ex-Dutch international Ruud
Gullit suggested on Dutch TV that it would be better if trainer Koeman
swapped a striker for defender De Jong. Koeman had his own plans, leaving
the same 11 players in the field but clearly with different instructions.
The ease in which Ajax managed to hold onto their lead during the second act
demonstrated the importance of Koeman's influence. Although no
more goals were score on the second half both teams had their chances and
the crowd were treated to an entertaining second half.

| Ajax
see financial losses drop dramatically |
18 Mar 2003
|
|
Whilst most professional
clubs are faced with financial difficulties, Ajax has seen it's deficit drop
from 4 million euros
till a mere 800 thousand euros in just a year's time. Due to
Ajax's recent successes,
league title in 2002 and 12 lucrative champions league games, the club will
not be forced to sell any of there players to keep their shareholders happy.
Ajax director Arie van Eijden told the newspaper Algemeen Dagblad: "We
still have a small loss because we have a debit in terms of the value of players
and even more importantly we haven't sold any players.
"But a transfer is also no
longer necessary. If we wanted to get great (financial) results we could sell a
player, but we are not relying on such a sale."
Van Eijden also added that the club would only buy a new player if an existing
squad member left.

| Ibrahimovic
fit for AS Roma match |
18 Mar 2003
|
|
Ajax trainer Ronald Koeman was relieved to hear that hospital
tests on Monday have not revealed any serious damage to Zlatan
Ibrahimovic's hamstring. Ibrahimovic will now almost certainly be
able to play in Ajax's last Champions League match against AS Roma on
Wednesday evening.
|
| Slight
doubt Ibrahimovic for Roma clash |
17 Mar 2003
|
|
There is a slight chance that Ajax, who are faced with only having one
center-forward in their squad at present in the form of Swedish
international Ibrahimovic, may have to miss their goal-machine for
Wednesday's crucial confrontation with AS Roma. It appears that the Swede
has received a slight hamstring injury during last Sunday's 2-1 win over
Excelsior, in which he bagged both goals for the Amsterdammers and will be
undergoing hospital test today to try and reveal the exact extent of the
injury. If the hamstring-injury does appear to be serious then Ronald
Koeman has stated that Rafael van der Vaart will have to take over as
central striker.
However Koeman stated on Ajax's website just before the squad flew off for
Italy; that the hospital test were more for a precautionary measure and
that he believed that there was more chance of Ibrahimovic playing than
him not playing.

|
The secretary of the international players' union FIFPRO, Dutchman Theo
van Seggelen, has stated in the Dutch daily newspaper Álgemeen
Dagblad' that the loan deal of Ajax striker Mido to Celta Vigo until the
end of the season, has put a bomb under the whole transfer system. Van
Seggelen is a firm believer that players should be able to leave a club at
any time they want saying: "That works outside the football
world, so why should we be different? I could be wrong of course, but I
think that FIFA have put themselves on thin ice with this decision.
"If Spanish rules are more important than
international rules, the end is near. Why should we make arrangements
then?"
The FIFA gave
Celta de Vego permission to make use of a Spanish F.A. ruling that
allows clubs to replace players with long term injuries outside of the
transfer-window period. In the case of Mido Celta
were allowed to make use of the calamity rule to replace Argentinian defender
Sebastian Mendez who is out of action for the rest of the season with an
injury with Ajax striker 'Mido'.

AS Roma - Ajax |
March 2003
|
|
Ajax travel off to AS Roma top of group D and knowing that they
are unbeaten in their last 5 champions league games. They have also seen their
champions league form grow with each game played in the contest.
Ajax's youngsters certainly impressed friend and foe in their last C.L. game
after holding Valencia to a 1-1 draw in a spectacular game forcing Ajax
coach Ronald Koeman to state that his side deserved to progress to the
quarter-finals of the Champions League. "Our performance in the second
half was fantastic, there´s no doubt we now deserve a place in the
quarter-finals".
Although Ajax's 2-1 rehearsal against Feyenoord's
sister club Excelsior last weekend would not of impressed AS Roma, the
Italians own rehearsal, a 1-0 defeat to lowly placed Perugia, was even less
impressive.
The most positive point for Ajax this weekend was the apparent ease in which
Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was able to bag a brace to give Ajax a
2-1 win after trailing 0-1. Ibrahimovic has already scored 5 champions
league goals this season and after Sunday's demonstration Ibrahimovic will
undoubtedly add more goals to his tally.
Bearing in mind Ajax's performance against Valencia and after having held
Arsenal to two draws there's no reason why Ajax should not be able to grab
another point in Rome.

| Milan
hot favorite to capture Chivu |
15 Mar 2003
|
| According
to the Italian sport-newspaper 'Gazzetto dello sport' AS Milan
look to be winning the race for Ajax's Rumanian international defender,
Christian Chivu. The club is believed to willing to pay 10-15 million
euros but Ajax have put a 18 million euro price tag on his neck. If
Milan make the scoop then they will be forced to sell a non EEC player
as Italian rules are stringent in the number of players that a club may
have on their books from outside of the EEC. If Chivu does decide to
make the move he will see his salary more than double according to the
report. Ajax's chairman, Michael van Praag has said that Ajax will not
try to hold the player against his will stating "Footballers are
human, not slaves and there we will never hold anybody here against
their will.

| Real
Betis have approached Ajax about Swedish centre-forward Zlatan
Ibrahimovic and have apparently offered the club 11. million euros, a
price that the Amsterdammers will probably laugh at knowing that can get
at least 18 million euros form Tottenham en AS Roma. Ibrahimovic has
often stated that for the time being he would prefer to stay with Ajax
as this is better for his development as a footballer.

| Fifa
allow Mido transfer |
15 Mar 2003
|
The
FIFA has finally given Ajax striker
Mido the the go ahead to move to Celta Vigo on a loan deal for the rest
of the season. Celta are allowed to make use of the calamity rule to
replace Argentinian defender Sebastian Mendez who is out of action for
the rest of the season with an injury "I am happy to be able to play for a club like Celta Vigo,"
Mido said. "This is much better than going home to train with the
national team."
Ajax themselves are certainly satisfied that they have managed to
offload the troublesome Egyptian star for a period and it also path's
the way for other Ajax talents.

| Mido
banned form Ajax trainings |
14 Mar 2003
|
|
Ajax's enfant terrible Mido has been given to understand that he is no
longer welcome in the Amsterdam Arena and is no longer allowed to train
with Ajax's first team or even their reserve squad. Ajax are worried
that Mido, who has earned himself the 'persona non grata' status bij
Ajax will have a disharmonious effect on the players.

| Arsenal
interested in Ajax captain Chivu |
13 Mar 2003
|
|
Arsenal are believed to be on the verge of bringing out an offer for
Ajax captain Christian Chivu after witnessing his defensive qualities in
their two champion league draws with Ajax. The Gunners's interest will
undoubtedly prompt Real Madrid, who have been following Chivu for the
past two months, plus number of other European top clubs to come up with
offers. Arsene Wenger has a severe shortage in center backs at
Arsenal especially after selling Matthew Upson and at the age of 36,
first choice center back Keown is nearing his retirement. The Chivu
euros would certainly be welcome at Ajax and would be sufficient to help
them keep hold of the rest of their young squad intact.

| Austria
Wien target Ajax's Didulica |
13 Mar 2003
|
|
Austria Wien have show an interest in Ajax 's Australian
international goalkeeper Joey Didulica. Didulica's contract with Ajax is
to expire soon and the player and the club have not been able to come to
an agreement concerning an extension. Ajax feel that Didulica is asking
to much for his services and Didulica is unhappy being sidelined by
Dutch youth internation Steekelenburg and Rumanian international goalie,
lobont. Didulica is a catch for any club needing a prolific goalie and
it is somewhat of a shame that he is unable to secure a first team place
with Ajax but with the likes of Steekelenburg and Lobont in the squad of
course understandable. However, FootballNL would be surprised if the
Australian would opt for an Austrian side as his qualities would
certainly warrant a move to a European top league.

13 Mar 2003

|
Ajax have signed Belgian youth international Thomas Vermaelen
on a two-year deal, with an option for a further two years.

Amsterdam who he has forced a regular team place in the Ajax
under-19 side.

to decide on Mido loan on Wednesday |

|
Egyptian striker Mido,
whose move
to Spain was believed to have collapsed because the FIFA were not
prepared to allow Celta Vigo to make use of the calamity ruling, could
still go through after all. According to a FIFA spokesman "The

taking place on Wednesday afternoon,"

| Ajax
draw 1-1 against Valencia |
11 Mar 2003
|
Ajax
did well this evening forcing a 1-1 draw against Valencia after going
0-1 down via a 28th minute spot shot. Before the match Ajax trainer
Ronald Koeman said "I have a good feeling about the match. We are
better than last time we played Valencia, and I don't think Valencia can
say the same." After the match Koeman stated that this was
Ajax's best Champions League match this season and that his team had
made an enormous progress since their last
clash with Valencia.
In the first half Valencia had just the edge
on the Amsterdammers and Kily'sr was a good reflection of
the match up till that point. However after the goal Ajax picked
themselves up and a 1-1 half time-score would not of been unjust.
In the second half Ajax swapped defender Nigel de Jong for winger Andy
van der Meyde showing their second half intentions. After near misses
from Ibrahimovic and Rafael van der Vaart Ajax were finally rewarded for
their effort when Finnish international Passanen headed in a corner. In
the rest of the entertaining second act both teams had their chances but
the 1-1 score-line remained on the board.
With Arsenal being held to a 1-1 draw at home by 10-man Roma
Ajax remain top of their group but will still have to force a draw in
Rome to be sure of qualification.

refuse consent for 'Mido' transfer |
11 Mar 2003
|
| Although
Ajax and Celta Vigo have agreed terms for a loan deal of Ajax's Egytian
striker for the remainder of the season the FIFA have refused to give
their consent for the transfer, disregarding Celta's request to make use
of the 'Calamity Rule' for replacing players that have been injured for
longer than five months. Mido was set to replace injured Argentine
Sabastian Mendez. Ajax outcast Mido could well be forced to sit out the
rest of the season with Ajax's reserve squad.

| Hoogendorp
still hoping for Ajax deal |
10 Mar 2003
|
| Rick Hoogendorp is still
hoping
that Ajax and RKC can come to some sort of agreement before Friday's
transfer deadline closes in Holland, for a loan deal to Ajax until the
end of the season. Ajax were in search of a replacement for the troublesome
Mido who is awaiting FIFA approval to make a temporary swith to Celta
Vigo but if that deal falls through then Ajax will not be able to afford 'Mido's'
wages as well as Hoogendorp's. "I'm well here in Waalwijk, but my hopes are on Ajax," said
Hoogendorp. I can understand that RKC wants to keep me in Waalwijk, but
playing at Ajax for half a year would be fantastic for me. What I can learn there, even only on training, is more than
what I can learn in Waalwijk - and I don't think that they only want me
for the bench too."

| Mido
still waiting for FIFA permission |
10
Mar 2003
|
Although
Ajax outcast Mido appears to be set to join Celta Vigo on loan for the
remainder of the season he is still currently in Egypt and according to
techincal director Leo Beenhakker, he will be returning to Amsterdam
this week. However, sources close to Ajax Amsterdam revealed that they
wanted to wait until after Saturday's Dutch Eredivisie clash with Zwolle
before confirming the news at their end. A statement confirming the loan
could come from the club within 24 hours. Mido,
dropped from Ajax's senior squad recently following contentious remarks
to the press, is likely to be confirmed as a Celta Vigo player on Monday
according to his own website,
Although Ajax and Celta have agreed terms it is still uncertain if FIFA
rules allow the transfer to go through. With the transfer market closed
Spanish clubs can still make use of the 'Calamity Rule' for replacing
players that have been injured for longer than five months. Mido is set
to replace injured Argentine Sabastian Mendez. However the FIFA must
give their consent in such an event and Ajax and Celta are still waiting
for FIFA permission. |

Zwolle-Ajax |
08
Mar 2003
|
Second
to top Ajax travel up north tomorrow for their match against second to
bottom Zwolle. Peter Boeve is faced with having to miss eight players
including striker Richard Roelofsen (knee injury), key defender Kras (on
hire from Ajax) who picked up his fourth yellow card last week and
first-choice goalkeeper Johan van der Werff who is suffering from a hip
disorder. Ajax's also have their own injury problems and with Andy
van der Meyde sitting out a four match ban the club are faced with
having two strikers, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Nourdin Boukhari. However
Ajax's midfielders have already shown that they canbe just as productive
as their strikers and with the return of Rafael van der Vaart Zwolle's
hopes of earning a point are remote.
With Ajax's Champions League match against Valencia next week Ajax will
probably try to force an early two or three goal lead advantage and then
use the rest of the match for up-front experiments. |
| Celta
Vigo's Gomez confirms 'Mido' deal |
08
Mar 2003
|
|
Celta Vigo's president Horacio Gomez has confirmed
that the club are to hire Ajax's Egyptian ace Mido for
the rest of the season. "Everything is practically done,
though we want to know if we can negotiate a purchase option for the end
of this season." Although both transfer markets are closed for
international transfers, the Spanish club have made use of a loophole.
To bring the undeniably talented Egyptian to Celta, the club has
cancelled the contract of Argentine defender Sebastian Mendez, who is
currently recovering from a knee injury. The
20 year-old, who was demoted to the reserves for the second time
in short succession as the result of his attitude problems, will
be in Vigo on Sunday and should be available for selection in time for
next week's game against Atletico Madrid |
| 'Mido'
claims loan deal to Celta de Vigo |
07
Mar 2003
|
|
Ajax's Egyptian striker Ahmed
‘Mido’ Hossam who seems to be doing everything in his power to force
a split with the club has stated on his own website mido-online.com that
he that he will be on loan with Spanish side Celta Vigo for the
remainder of the season and will depart for Spain on Sunday. How 'Mido'
plans to get around the international transfer-window being closed was
eluded in the story. Mido must surely be aware of fellow team-mate Nikos
Machlas's desire to return to Amsterdam after swapping Ajax's reserve
bench for Sevilla's reserve bench but who has to wait until the
transfer-window re before he is allowed to return to Amsterdam.
Mido also stated on his website that he plans to sign a long term deal
in the summer in England, Italy, or Spain. Mido's insinuations suggest
that he is still pulling the strings at Ajax which would seem very
unlikely and if any move is imminent then the ' ifs and when's'
will surely be an Ajax decision.
“I felt a move was necessary in order to play real, first team
football until the end of the season. I didn’t want to sit without
proper training for three whole months”

| De
Boer held talks with Ajax last week |
07
Mar 2003
|
It
appears that Dutch international defender Frank de Boer held talks with Ajax trainer Ronald Koeman last week about a
possible return to Ajax. At the age of 34, De Boer can still chose
between three clubs to play for next season. Barcelona
officials are to meet next week to discuss the future of the defender
and Barcelona's new trainer Atnic has stated that he would dearly like
to hold onto the player and has recommended that the club move to renew
the Dutchman's contract, which expires in the summer. Manchester City are also interested in De Boer and manager Kevin
Keegan, who has just been told he can splash out on new players, has
put Frank de Boer on the top of his shopping list.

Van der Vaart Ajax striker |
06 Mar 2003 |
|
Now that Ajax have been unable to secure RKC striker Rick Hoogendorp on
a loan deal for the rest of the season the Amsterdammers have decided to
turn their attentions to Rafael van der Vaart who has now been earmarked
for an emergency striker's role. Koeman
"I will now fill the position
with the players I already have. I think that Rafael van der Vaart can
play in that position, now that he's back. His greatest qualities lie in
the opposition's penalty area anyway."

Mido "Last year in the Amsterdam
Arena"
|
06 Mar 2003
|
|
Ajax's banished striker Mido, has stated on Egyptian television that he
intends to leave Ajax at the end of the season and that a possible move to
Barcelona can not be ruled out. "This is my last year in the Amsterdam
Arena, I have received a lot of offers from European top clubs and next
season I could well be playing in Barcelona." It has been these sort of
statements that has gotten Mido into all the trouble that he is now facing
and with this last interview it will certainly not help his current
position. Perhaps Mido should take closer look at his present contract for
without Ajax's cooperation the Egyptian striker could well be forced to sit
out a couple of years in Ajax's reserve team .

gives Mido his support |
05 Mar 2003 |
|
Ajax's swedish international striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has given his
support for banished star Mido after stating on Amstedam's local TV
station 'AT5' that he believes Mido should be given another chance.
"He's still young and can make mistakes and should be given another
chance" adding "For his age, Mido is one of the best footballers
around and deserves another chance". Ibrahimovic made light of
the incident in which Mido is supposed to have thrown a pair of scissors
at him after the Swede had given him a right jab "Ok, something
did happen but it really wasn't a big problem"

| Ajax
interested in RKC's Hoogendorp |
05 Mar 2003 |
Ajax
have knocked on RKC's door for striker Rick Hoogendorp. The
Amsterdammers are hoping to hire the striker until the end of the season
to help alleviate their lack of firing power. Ajax have banished
Egyptian striker Mido to the reserve squad for the rest of the season and
have hired Greek striker Nikos Machlas out to Sevilla for the rest of the
season and are confronted with only having one center forward in their
squad, Zlaran Ibrahimovic. The 28 year old Hoogendorp would
certainly like to join Ajax's squad for the rest of the season but
according to the Dutch Daily newspaper 'De Telegraaf' their is a
considerable difference in what Hoogendorp is demanding and what Ajax are
prepared to offer.
Ajax have also
enquired by Heerenveen if they can loan Denneboom until the end of the
season. Ajax have until the 14th of March before the transfer-window
period in Holland closes. If Ajax are unable to do a deal with either RKC
or Heerenveen then they will no longer continue their search, knowing that
with the return of Rafael van der Vaart and the recent progression of
Wesley Sneijder and Steven Pienaar they already have a strike-force in the
makings. |
| Real
think Chivu price-tag maybe too high |
05 Mar 2003
|
|
Real Madrid sports chief Jorge Valdano has admitted
that the club are interested in both AS Roma defender Walter Samuel and
Ajax's Cristian Chivu but added that the price-tag may well be too high when
the transfer-window re- this summer.
Valdano said: "Who would we sign? Samuel? Chivu? They are both great
players, but their prices probably rule us out. In any case, the club's
young players will always have first option on making the step up to the
first team."
|
| Bergdolmo
hoping for contract extension |
05 Mar 2003
|
|
Ajax defender Andre Bergdolmo is convinced that he will be offered a new
contract when his present one expires next summer. Although reports in the
Dutch media have suggested that the 31-year-old Norwegian international's
£1 million a year wages are considered to high for a player who has not
secured a regular first team place. Bergdolmo is surprised by the reports,
stating that he felt that Ajax were very satisfied with him. In an interview
in the Norwegian daily newspaper Bergdolmo said : "This comes as very
unexpected news. I haven't heard anything about this. On the contrary, I
have the impression that Ajax are very satisfied with me and I have more or
less been a regular in the team since Ronald Koeman became boss,"
However his agent Erik Soler was more
realistic stating that after talks with technical director Leo Beenhakker
last December he was not so optimistic.
"I can confirm that we had a meeting about Andre's future. I guess it
was not exactly positive that things will happen. There will be another
meeting before the summer."
|
| Real
Madrid show serious interest in Chivu |
04 Mar 2003 |
|
Although AC Milan are (supposedly) no
longer interested in Ajax's Rumanian international Cristian Chivu,
Real Madrid's interest in the player has certainly not diminished.
According to reports the Spaniards are prepared to offer Ajax a
cash-plus-player swap for the defender. It would appear that Real have
been following Ajax's captain all year and have been in constant contact
with Ajax officials. Real are now hoping to clinch a deal in the next
transfer-window. |
| Successful
return Rafael van der Vaart |
04 Mar 2003 |
| Ajax
midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has made a successful return last night
after playing for one hour with Ajax's reserve team against Heerenveen's
reserves. Van der Vaart stated after the match that he felt no discomfort
whatsoever from his injuries and that he felt up to Wednesday's FA cup
confrontation against Heerenveen and certainly for this weekend's Ere
Divisie match against struggling Zwolle. |
| Rafael
van der Vaart finally fit again |
03 Mar 2003 |
| Ajax,
who are seriously in need of some firing power up-front can finally
welcome back the return of star player Rafael van der to the squad after a
long absence due to a thigh muscle injury. Van der Vaart will play
his first match since Decemebr tonight for Ajax's reserve team's game
against Heerenveem. If all goes well then the Dutch international can be
added to Ajax's first team squad. |
| Ajax
target Denneboom to replace Mido |
03 Mar 2003
|
|
Heerenveen striker Romano Denneboom is
one of the main candidates to replace Ajax's 'Mido' who has been banished
to Ajax's reserve squad for the rest of the season. It is unclear if
Ajax are planning to buy Denneboom, with 8 goals Heerenveen's top
scorer, or to hire him for the rest of the season. After Ajax's 2-0 home win
over Vitesse technical director Leo Beenhakker stated on Dutch television
that he was less optimistic of the club's chances of obtaining a striker
this week . ' We can think up all sorts of possibilities but first of all we
will need the cooperation of the club in question. I don't think Heerenveen
will be overjoyed at the though of losing Denneboom in this crucial part of
the season. It's easier to talk about buying a striker than to actually do
it" Beenhakker also pointed out that if Ajax manage to find a striker
he will not be eligable to play in the Champions League.
|
| Milan
not interested in Ajax's Chivu |
03 Mar 2003
|
|
Milan's vice-president Adriano Galliani has ended any speculations of
Ajax's Rumanian defender Chivu joining the club this summer,
indicating that the club is only interested in experienced older
players. "There won't be big changes necessarily in June because Milan's plan
is to confirm the current group of players," stated Galliani. Our policy is to buy players already on a high level, to win
immediately, while the younger players have to grow in other teams. Anyway, we won't buy
Chivu."

| Unremorseful
Mido intends to stay at Ajax |
03 Mar 2003
|
Ajax's enfant terrible 'Mido' has stated in asn interview in the Dutch daily
newspaper that he has no intentions whatsoever to leave Ajax in the summer.
Mido is currently sitting out a ban for the rest of the season that was
imposed on him by trainer Koeman and Technical director Beenhakker for his
behaviour and general attitude. It of course still remains to be seen if
Ajax are still willing to continue with the Egyptian star after this term as
he did not show any remorse in the article and once again indicated that he
and Koeman are not the best of friends. "I think Koeman doesn't like
how I behave in some situations. He said he was professional enough to work
with a player who is not a friend. Well I can work with a coach who is not
my friend too." Mido still cannot understand why he has been
banished and is convinced he hasn't done anything wrong.
saying:: "They won't see a different Mido at Ajax than last week or
last month. I keep to my
opinion that I have done nothing wrong. I didn't deserve a punishment so I
don't have to change things either. I
did not make any apologies. You only apologise if you have done something
wrong and I didn't."
These sort of negative statements will certainly not help his already
precarious situation.
|
| Ajax
intend to buy a striker this week |
01 Mar 2003 |
|
Ajax trainer Ronald Koeman has stated in the Dutch Daily newpaper 'De
Telegraaf' that the club are to start looking for a new striker. After
banishing Mido to the reserve squad for the rest of the season, Ajax are
confronted with having only one center forward in their squad and with
just one week left to the Dutch transfer-window period left, Ronald Koeman
has decided to comb the local market this week for a replacement. Ajax's
front line has also been severely weakened now that Andy van der Meyde has
to sit out a four match ban and is lacking a replacement for the Dutch
international as Victor Sikora, Wamberto, Jari Litmanen and Rafael van der
Vaart are still on Ajax's injured list. |
| Pienaar
pens new improved Ajax contract |
01 Mar 2003
|
|
Ajax's South African talent Steven Pienaar has penned a new deal with the
Amsterdammers. Pienaar's original contract that runs out in 2006 has now
been brokenand vastly improved. The new contract will also run until
the summer of 2006. At first their were some doubts
as to whether Ajax and Pienaar would be able to agree on a new improved
contract after several meetings between the two parties had resulted in a
disappointing stalemate. However, Ajax are extremely keen to hold onto their
young squad and have once again shown their willingness to do so. After the
signing ceremony Pienaar said:"I am glad it is over
with. Everyone has been talking about my contract lately, now football is
the important thing again. The talk has not even bothered me, I think I have played very well
in recent weeks. It has probably helped the talks with the way in which I have
played this season, but I am happy now, but I am always happy."

| Ajax
banish Mido to Ajax II once again |
28 Feb 2003 |
|
Ajax's Egyptian striker Mido
has once again been banished from the first team squad after yet
another disagreement with trainer Ronald Koeman and technical director Leo
Beenhakker. Ajax have informed Mido that he will now have have to train
and play for Ajax's reserve squad for the rest of the season.
Ronald Koeman
has gave heed to the request of Ajax's players, who have unanimously
stood behind Egyptian striker 'Mido' and reinstated the enfant terrible
back into the squad for Ajax's home match against Arsenal last Wednesday.
After the match Mido spoke to Dutch and foreign media stating that he had
no idea why he had been banished but suggested the reason could be that
Ronald Koeman has a disliking to him.

der Meyde accepts four match ban |
27 Feb 2003 |
|
Ajax winger Andy van der Meyde has accepted
the four match ban imposed on him by the Dutch FA (KNVB) for his role
in last Sunday's brawl with Utrecht midfielder Patrick Zwaanswijk. This
means that the Dutch international will also have to miss Ajax's crucial
away match to PSV on 23rd of March as well as Ajax-Vitesse (2 feb),
Zwolle-Ajax (8 feb) and Ajax-Excelsior (16 Feb). |
| Ajax
and Arsenal draw once again |
26 Feb 2003 |
Ajax
have gone top of their Champions League group after drawing with Arsenal
for the second time within a week, this time 0-0. Last week Ronald
Koeman's side took Arsenal by surprise with their attacking style, this
time Ajax elected to start the game far more patiently, knowing that the
Gunners have a better away reputation than at home with their counter
football. Koeman's tactics resulted in Arsenal having more ball possession
but did not result in Ajax being pinned down. Both sides had a few good
chances in the first half, with Henry forcing Lobont to save and Wiltord
shooting into the side netting. However Ajax came the closest to scoring
in theng 45 minutes after Hatem Trabelsi surged towards Arsenal's
box and was tripped by Robert Pires. From the resulting corner kick
Romanian defender Cristian Chivu whipped in a fantastic freekick that had
Seaman beaten but not Ashley Cole who was well positioned on the line to
head away. Ajaxd the second half with a couple of good chances.
Trabelsi slipped into the penalty area and passed to Ibrahimovic. The
Swede was challenged as he shot and Lauren deflected the ball over the
bar.
Arsenal also came close to scoring in the 66th minute after a Bergkamp
freekick found Vieira unmarked at the far post, but the Frenchman's volley
was tame and straight at Lobont.
After the match Arsenal trainer Arsene Wenger stated that Ajax's approach
to the game was very negative. saying:: "They didn't come out of
their defensive shell and as long as we didn't score, they continued to
sit back." "If we had beaten Ajax at home this would have been a
very good result for us. I still feel we have a very good chance of going
through after tonight's result."
The result leaves Ajax and Arsenal joint top of Group B with six points
each from four games. Valencia are third with five points while Roma, who
achieved an historic 3-0 victory at the Mestalla tonight, now have three
points…and go to Highbury for the next Champions League matchday. |

match ban imposed on Van der Meyde |
26 Feb 2003 |

Ajax winger Andy van der Meyde has received a four match ban for his
part in last Sunday's brawl with Utrecht midfielder, Patrick
Zwaanswijk, who in turn has received a two match ban. Both players were
show red card for their behaviour. Van der Meyde has until today to appeal
against the sentence. Zwaanswijk has already stated that he will not be
appealing.

Mido back squad to face Arsenal |
25 Feb 2003 |
|
Ronald Koeman has given heed to the request of Ajax's players, who have
unanimously stood behind Egyptian striker 'Mido' and has reinstated the
enfant terrible back into the squad - giving Ajax the choice of two
central strikers. Although Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be trainer Koeman's
first choice against Arsenal this Wednesday, it shall be quite a relief
for Ajax fans knowing they have two striker who are out for revenge.
Ajax's Swedish
bomber Ibrahimvic has a bone to pick with Arsenal and the
nominee for the African Footballer Of the Year Award. would like
to prove to Koeman that he should not be second choice to Zlatan.

| Seaman
and Cole fit in time for Ajax match |
25 Feb 2003
|
|
English international goalkeeper David Seaman, who was forced off during
Arsenal's home game against Ajax last week with a hip inury and Ashley Cole,
who missed Saturday's league game against Manchester City due to a groin
injury, are both expected to make their appearances for Arsenal's second
Champions League confrontation against Ajax this Wednesday in Amsterdam. If
Cole is stillnot fit in time then his place in defence will be taken over by
Dutch international, Giovanni van Bronckhorst. However, manager Arsène
Wenger believes both players should be fit in time. "David and
Ashley have a good chance of being available for Ajax."

| Ajax
to discuss new Ibrahimovic contract |
24 Feb 2003 |
Ajax
are planning to get together with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's agents this week to
discuss the details of a new improved contract. A number of clubs have
already targeted the Swedish international and the likes of AC Roma are
also prepared to meet the € 19 million euros needed to lure him away
from Ajax. Ibrahimovic however, has stated that he would like to stay in
Amsterdam for at least one more year as he believes that this is the best
thing for his development as a player.
By offering a number of Ajax talents new improved contract, the club have
given a definite signal to other team members that they are doing their
best to keep the squad intact and this has been another reason for Zlatan
to commit himself to Ajax for another term and it could also hold team
captain Chivu in Amsterdam for an additional season. If Ajax can keep this
squad together and key players such as Van der Vaart. Pienaar, De Jong and
Inbrahimovic continue to develop as they have done over the past few
months then Ajax will undoubtedly start bringing home some more (European)
silverware to Amsterdam. |
| Ibrahimovic
out for revenge |
24 Feb 2003
|
|
In an interview with the English newspaper 'The News Of The World"
Ajax's Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has talked about how he felt
insulted at being offered a trial at Arsenal and has vowed to make Arsenal
pay for it this Tuesday. When Arsene Wenger invited Ibrahimovic to
Arsenal for a trial the lethal striker told him 'I don't do trials.
You know who I am." Although Ibrahimovic was not ablr to impress during
Ajax's 1-1 draw at Highbury last Tuesday, the striker has still something up
his sleeve to show Arsenal this Wednesday during the return.
"You can expect a lot from me in Amsterdam. I'd like to show
them what they missed."

| Van
der Vaart misses return Ajax-Arsenal |
24 Feb 2003 |
| Ajax's
Champions League return against Arsenal this Wednesday has come a little
to early for star player Rafael van der Vaart. Van der Vaart is
still recuperating from a thigh muscles strain and is unable to play for
Ajax's reserve team against PSV's reserves tonight. As the midfielder
hasn't played a match in months and trainer Ronald Koeman is not prepared
to take the risk fielding him for the crucial game. |
| Nigel
de Jong pens new Ajax deal |
22 Feb 2003 |
| Ajax
and talented midfielder Nigel de Jong have come to an agreement regarding
a new improved contract. The talks between De Jong and Ajax have been
going on for some time now and it was believed that further talks would
have to wait until after Leo Beenhakker's holiday, that is due to start
next week. However, Ajax have decided it's not in the best interest of the
club to wait any longer. The Amsterdammers have rightfully seen the
importance of De Jong's influence on the team and have reflected that in
the new improved deal that runs out in the Summer of 2006. Ajax
technical director Leo Beenhakker said it was a great day for Ajax and
that hopefully with both Rafael van der Vaart and Nigel de Jong signing
new contracts this shouldthe way to concluding new contracts with
Ajax's other young talents, Hatem Trabelsi and Steven Pienaar. |
| New
contract for Rafael van der Vaart |
21 Feb 2003 |
Ajax
and star player Rafael van der Vaart have finally come to an agreement
concerning the midfielder's new improved contract. Van der Vaart's
importance for the squad will now be reflected in his new contract with a
significant wage increase, whilst Van der Vaart has given his assurance
that he will remain with the club until at least the summer of 2004. Van
der Vaart's contract expires in 2006 so Ajax will still be able to cash in
on a lucrative transfer deal. Ajax's
optimism concerning the contract extension of Nigel de Jong was today
somewhat dimmed after director Arie van der Eijden stated that talks would
have to resume after Leo Beenhakker's holiday when earlier in the week he
was convinced a new deal could be penned this week.

Roma want to buy Ibrahimovic in March |
21 Feb 2003 |
|
AS Roma president Franco Sensi has again stated that he intends to
bring Ajax star Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the the club, this time he has even
set a date for the move, March this year.
Ninth placed in the Seria A Roma and more or less eliminated from the
Champions League after having lost all three of their second phase
Champions League games, Roma are in need of some reinforcements up-front
and at least one new defender. Sensie: "In
March I'll buy Ibrahimovic or Adriano and Legrottaglie. In March we'll
establish the programme for next season." |
| Ajax
banish Mido to the reserve team. |
21 Feb 2003 |
| Ajax's
Egyptian striker Mido has been banished from the first team squad after
yet another disagreement with trainer Ronald Koeman and will now have to
train and play for Ajax's reserve squad until further notice. Neither Ajax
nor Koeman have given an explanation for his removal but the most likely
cause is that the player has ventilated his dissatisfaction of not being
able to secure a first team place. Last December Mido was also banned from
the squad after he had told Dutch local TV station AT5 that he would not
be playing for Ajax much longer as he
was intending to play in the Seria A next season. |
| Ajax
contract-improvement problem Pienaar |
20 Feb 2003 |
In
an interview in the weekly football magazine "Voetbal
International" Ajax's technical director has said that he is
convinced that contract talks with key players Rafael van der Vaart and
Nigel De Jong will soon be completed. Initially Ajax wanted to
extend Van der Vaart's contract beyond the existing 2006 deadline but have
instead only increased the midfielders salary. The exact details of John
de Jong's new offer are not yet known. Ajax striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic,
who has attracted the interest of several foreign clubs including an offer
from Bettis Sevilla last week, is also hoping to start negotiations with
Ajax soon for a new improved deal.
In the interview, Beenhakker is less positive about the chances of holding
onto South African talent, Steven Pienaar. Pienaar, who has played well
all season and who also put on an impressive performance against Arsenal
on Tuesday has been trying to force an improved deal all season but still
hasn't managed to gain Leo Beenhakker's confidence somehow. Unfortunately
for Ajax fans the ex-Feyenoord coach does not share the opinions of Ajax's
coach Koeman and Holland's European Player of the Centaury, Johan Cryuff,
who are convinced that Pienaar possesses all the qualities of a world
class player. Perhaps due to Beenhakkers blindness, Pienaar could well be
forced to find a club where the back-room bosses have less say in the
matter. |
| Van
der Vaart still not fully recovered |
20 Feb 2003 |
|
Ajax star Rafael van der Vaart, who has been out of action for the past
two months, is still not fully recovered enough to be able to play for
Ajax's reserve team against AZ tonight. Van der Vaart trained with Ajax's
first team squad on the eve of their Champions League clash with Arsenal
last Tuesday and stated after the training that his thigh muscles
were playing up. Van der Vaart is hoping that a couple of days rest will
cure the problem. Trainer Ronald Koeman was counting on Van der Vaart
being fit in time for Ajax's next confrontation with Arsenal next week but
also knows that the player must at least play against Utrecht this Sunday
as he has been out of action for so long.
|
| Media
impressed with Pienaar |
19 Feb 2003 |
After
Ajax's somewhat lucky 1-1 Champions League draw with Arsenal the media has
hailed young South African Steven Pienaar as Ajax's
man-of-the-match. The 20 year old Pienaar is a product of Ajax´s South
African club "Ajax Cape Town" and has made so much progression
this year in Amsterdam that he has managed to secure a first team place.
Pienaar has developed into a multi functional player and as last night's
performance demonstrated he can even simulate Litmannen's position as
Ajax's number 10. Ajax trainer Ronald Koeman was very pleased with
Pienaars performance and stated after the match that Pienaar was ajax's
best player of the evening.
"I enjoyed watching Pienaar tonight," Koeman said. "For his
age he is playing fantastically and he really was our best player
tonight." |
| Arsenal
held to 1-1 draw against Ajax |
18 Feb 2003 |
Arsenal
and Ajax together with Valencia remain tied at the top of Group B as Ajax held the Gunners to a
surprising 1-1 draw at Highbury this evening in an entertaining match full of intelligent attacking play from both
sides.
Arsenal got off to an ideal start with an early 5th minute lead after former Ajax player Dennis Bergkamp
put Sylvain Wiltord into scoring position who then fired a diagonal shot
under
goalkeeper Lobont's legs. Despite the earlyr and an injury
plagued squad, Ajax's young side were not impressed and surged ahead,
matching Arsenal in
all aspects of the game, gradually taking
control of midfield and forcing Arsenal back onto their own half. In the 18th minute 18 year old Nigel De Jong
picked up a 35 yeard cross from Galasek and then neatly
slipped passed Ashley Cole to equalise for Ajax with a beautifully
placed shot in the upper right hand corner of the goal.
For most of the second half Arsenal dominated and as the game entered its closing stages Arsenal were
firing everything they
could at Ajax but were still unable to penetrate Ajax's well organized defense. Dennis Bergkamp came
close to putting Arsenal into the lead in the 72nd minute of the match with
Arsenal's best chance of the second half but his shot ricocheted of the
crossbar. 5 minutes before time, Ajax should
of made it 1-2 but Nordin Bouhkari, who came on to replace the disappointing
Ibrahimovic, wasn't able to net from 3 yards.

16 Feb 2003 |
| Ajax's
in form Swedish striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has decided to swap names on his
shirt. Currently the Swede has his christian name 'Zlatan' on his
shirt but out of respect for his father he would now prefer to have his
surname 'Ibrahimovic' sprawled over his back.

Ajax has sold its 51 percent majority share in Ghanaian first division
club Ashanti Goldfields Sporting Club. The Ashanti Goldfields Company
who already owned 49 percent of the club have bought the Ajax's shares,
giving them 100 percent control of the club. Ajax have stated that
they are no longer prepared to invest anymore capital into the club but are
still willing to assist with technical advice.

| Mido
joins long list of injured Ajax players |
15 Feb 2003 |
Ajax's
game this evening against Groningen should be a mere formality and the
Amsterdammers will undoubtedly have no problems in rolling up the
northerners. However the question that arises is not with how many goals
Ajax will win this evening but with how many injured Ajax players will
leave the field. Ronald Koeman's team has been plagued with injuries all
season and now it appears Egyptian striker 'Mido' has joined the
long injured list after straining a thigh-muscle in Tunisia's friendly
match against Denmark last Wednesday. Mido has been unable to resume
training and will definately miss tonightç confrontation with Groningen
and Koeman is very skeptical if he will be fit in time for Ajax's
Champions League clash against Arsenal in the Amsterdam Arena on Tuesday.
Although Andy van der Meyde has recovered from his clash with Feyenoorder
Ono and the defenders Jelle van Damme, Andre Bergdolmo and
midfielderRichard Witschge are all once again fit, Ajax are still
confronted with a number of key players who are still recovering from long
term injuries.
Goalkeepers Timmer and Stekelenburg plus Van der Vaart, Heitingam Litmanen,
Mendes da Silva, Sikora, O'Brien and Wamberto are all forced to miss next
Tuesday's clash. |
| Van
der Vaart misses Ajax-Arsenal clash |
14 Feb 2003
|
|
Ajax star player Rafael van der Vaart
will not be fit in time Ajax's Champions League clash with Arsenal in the
Amsterdam Arena on Tuesday. Although the midfielder will be resuming
training this weekend, Ronald Koeman has stated that the Arsenal match is
far to early for van der Vaart and that he is not prepared to take the risk.
|
| Andy
van der Meyde attracts interest |
12 Feb 2003 |
| Kevin
Keegan's interest in Dutch players has not diminished as Ajax's Andy
van der Meyden becomes his latest target. Manchester City scouts and boss
Keegan have been signaled watching winger Van der Meyde at recent games
and it has also been reported that Italian clubs Inter Milan en Lazio Rome
are also keeping a keen eye on the Dutch international's development. With
clubs standing in the row for Cristian Chivu and Zlatan Ibrahimovic Ajax
trainer Ronoald Koeman will have his hands more than full in holding the
rest of the young squad intact. |
| Koeman
stays at Ajax according to brother |
12 Feb 2003
|
|
PSV's assistant trainer Erwin Koeman, has
stated that his brother Ronald will remain with Ajax until
his contract expires in 2004. Ronald Koeman's name has often been brought into
connection with Barcelona as the long-term successor to Louis van Gaal and
with Raddy Antic's appointment being only of a temporary nature, a move at the end of the
current season has been suggested by the Spanish media. However Erwin is adamant
that his brother will not be lured away from the Arena before his contract has
runout. "He has given his word to Ajax to
finish his contract. I know Ronald very well and, if he
says he will stay until 2004, he will stay. After that, if Barcelona want him,
he may go. But, for the moment, he definitely
wants to stay with Ajax."

| Ajax
robbed of points by referee |
11 Feb 2003
|
|
Feyenoord striker Robin van
Persie has admitted that his goal against Ajax last weekend should have been disallowed.
Nearly everyone in the Amsterdam Arena, except referee Dick Jol, saw Van Persie
foul Christian Chivu and so it was unbelievable that referee Dick Jol allowed
the goal that followed. Furthermore Feyenoord's equalizer came in the 8th minute
of injury time whilst there there were no stoppages in the first half. Head of
the referee's association, Jaap Uilenberg wrote in his weekly column that Ajax
should have been awarded an indirect free-kick and that the injury time goal
should not have been allowed. Dick Jol, who has often made controversial
decisions during Ajax games remained calm stating 'Van Persie has admitted that
the goal should have been disallowed and the TV replays also confirm that. I
just didn't see it on the pitch. I have no problems with Uilenbergs
remarks'.

| Van
Damme joins Ajax's long injured list |
10 Feb 2003
|
|
Ajax who were forced to field half of
their reserve team against Feyenoord in yesterday's league clash, have added
yet another player to their long list of injured players. It now appears
that Ajax defender Jelle van Damme, who was replaced during yesterday's game
with wing forward Nordin Boukhari after being sandwiched by two Feyenoorders,
has bruised his lungs. Van Damme, who has just received his first call-up
for Belgium's national team the 'Rode Duivels' will now have to postpone his
first appearance.

Pienaar also demanding higher pay |
07
Feb 2003
|
|
Ajax find themselves with an ever
increasing amount of players who are dissatisfied with their current
contract and are forcing better deals. After Rafael van der Vaart and
Hatem Trabelsi have rejected deals offered to them recently now South
African talent Pienaar is demanding new terms. Pienaar was promised a
new deal if e were to manage a certain number of appearances which he
indeed passed November. Ajax approached the player with a new deal but
Pienaar is not satisfied with the new offer and his agent has said that
the contract is not worthy of his ability. "Steven hit the
appearance number in November, but we were told to wait until January.
They did come back, but offered a pittance, way below his market value.
"Ajax take on young kids on low wages, with the promise of a better
deal if they prove themselves, but it never arrives. He would like to
stay, but the club need to be fair. It is a great club to develop at,
but it`s not a nice situation when most of the team are unhappy. I am
hoping they come back with a decent offer and give him what he
deserves."

|
Ajax have been dealt another blow for this
weekend's league clash with arch rivals Feyenoord after hearing that striker in
form Zlatan Ibrahimovic will probably have to miss the match through an injury.
Ibrahimovic, who pulled a muscle in Ajax's Dutch FA Cup meeting with Roda JC
earlier in the week, will be joining Ajax's long list of injured players
including: Van der Vaart, Litmanen, Heitinga, Wamberto, Mendes da Silva,
O'Brien, Sikora, Stekelenburg, Bergdolmo and goalie Timmer.

minute Excelsior dominated the rest of the match. In the 18th Hampdaoui
equalized for Excelsior and in 38th minute Lopes put the half-time 2-1
score-line on the board. In the 68th minute Lopes was once again
on target completing his brace for the 3-1.. Although Kujala was able to

the arrival of Ronald Koeman Wamberto has been sidelined and has seen new
arrivals Victor Sikora and Nourdin Boukhari being given preference. Even
so the two months absence will come as a blow to as Ajax challenge PSV
in a bid to retain their Eredivisie title.

| Joe
Didulica to leave Ajax this Summer |
01
Feb 2003
|
| Australian keeper Joe Didulica has informed Ajax that he intends to leave
the club this summer. Ajax are confronted with the problem that they have three
goalies of outstanding class and can of course only field one of them. With
Didulica's contract running out this summer he has been the subject of speculation
for some time now. Ronald Koeman's decision to offer Maarten Stekelenburg a long
time contract seems to have been the last straw for the goalkeeper, knowing that
it is nearly ompossible to gain a regular first team place with the likes of
Holland's most promising young goalkeeper since Edwin van der Sar. |

Trabelsi tries to force break |
30
Jan 2003
|
|
According to the Dutch weekly football magazine 'Voetbal International'
Ajax's wing defender Hatem Trabelsi is trying to force a break with Ajax
by demanding exorbarant wages and a new improved contract. When Trabelsi
first came to the club it was agreed that if the 'Tunesian Sportsman Of
The Year 2002' proved to be a valid asset for the club then Ajax
would offer him a new improved contract. In the V.I. interview
Trabelsi's manager Zied Timcani said that when they first signed Ajax's
technical director Leo Beenhakker told them Hatem would first have to
prove himself. Timcanin pointed out that Trabelsi has booked so
much progression that he is Ajax's best defender and after Rafael van
der Vaart, probably Ajax's best player. Ajax are also in agreement that
they should offer Trabelsi a new improved offer but are now in a stale
mate after talks broke down two months ago. Timcani stated that the
offer did not reflect Trabelsi's progression and was therefore
unacceptable. He also added that he hoped that Ajax would not stand in
the way of a transfer and respect the players wishes to one day play in
England, Italy or Spain, saying: ' After two years in Holland a transfer
would be in the players best interest. Not only financially but also as
a sportsman.' Leo Beenhakker stated ' Hatem contract runs out in 2004,
furthermore we also have an option down in black and white for another
two year' adding: ' If Hatem wants to leave then I will no doubt hear
about it. His manager knows there's a pricce tag'

Spanish
Primera Liga side FC Sevilla have hired Ajax's Greek international striker

Machlas, 29, has never managed to impress coach Ronald Koeman, who

Ajax trainer Ronald Koeman has pledge himself to the club after stating
that he will not leave Ajax earlier than the summer of 2004 thereby ruling
himself out of the Barcelona's trainers job, should Van Gaal be
forced to withdraw. Since last Sunday's home defeat rumours have been rife
and the name of Koeman has been circulating.
However, Koeman has declared that he will see his contract out with Ajax.

Ajax trainer Ronald Koeman is seriously beginning to question if he
should continue with Jari Litmanen next season. Litmanen, who only needs
to look at a ball to get injured, had talks with Koeman recently to
discuss his future with the club. Koeman told Litmanen that he was
concerned with the fact that he has been continually injured since his
return to the club and that although he knew that the Fin would not be
able to play all of Ajax's matches this season he had not expected the
player to be absent for so long. Koeman stated that he will make a final
decision as to Litmanen's future in the summer.

they are first obliged to sell one of their players toa new place

"The transfer could still happen. I will wait, until the end of the

Ajax are very satisfied with the progression of youth

The 18 year old talent, who was voted Ajax youth players of the year last
season, has demonstrated during Ajax's trainings camp that he has all the
skills necessary to grow into a formidable striker. During a free
kick training session on Saturday he demonstrated that he can curl the
ball over most defensive walls and into the back of the net with both his
right as well as his left foot with more even precision than Galasek or
even specialist Koeman. Although only 170cm, Sneijder is a strong player
and has a lot of determination. |

Ajax trainer Ronald Koeman has said that he is unhappy with
the situation that has been created by Arie van der Eijden and Leo
Beenhakker after their remarks concerning the contract extension of star
player Rafael van der Vaart. Koeman stated that after finally getting Ajax
back on track with stable results and attractive football the directors are
now destroying the unity in the group with their remarks about Van der
Vaarts wage demands. Koeman:" As Ajax trainer I was hoping that the
players would be devoting their attention to the trainings camp, instead of
devoting their attention to contract extensions. I believe that these
questions should be settled behind closed doors and not in the This

has won the Algarve Winter Cup after beating Scottish premier league side

from Ajax. Van der Vaart's manager Søren Lerby is currently negotiating a
new contract for the player and has apparently demanded that van der Vaart
receive twice the salary of their highest paid player, Nikos Machlas. Van
der Vaart has categorically denied this claim saying that " To
say I am demanding twice the salary of their best players is absolutely
absurd and untrue. Van Eijden is making me sound money mad.".
Beenhakker : "It is obvious that a player like van der Vaart deserves
a far higher salary than he now receives but Van der Vaart and Lerby are
asking double the salary of our highest paid player. They cannot deny this
as we have this down on paper in black and white. |

talks Ajax-Van der Vaart |
14 Jan 2003
|
|
Ajax have still not been able to
reach an agreement with star player Rafael van der Vaart and his agents Soren
Lerby and Sjaak Swart about a new contract. Van der Vaart's contract runs out
next year and Ajax have every intention of holding on to the player who many
regard as Holland's most talented player since Marco van Basten and Johan
Cruijff. The highly rated midfielder is believed to demanding twice the
salary of Ajax's highest paid player and the club is worried that if they agree
to the demands this could cause some dissatisfaction within the squad. On the
other hand, Ajax also realize that it is inevitable that one day the player will
leave Ajax for a European top club and with a long-term contract they will
receive far more for van der Vaart. Van der Vaart has stated that he would like
to play for Ajax for at least another two years so hopefully for Ajax they can
come to some agreement.

Winter and Ajax to part ways |
07 Jan 2003

|
Ajax and Aron Winter have
decided to part ways. The former Inter and Lazio player has been given to
understand by Ajax that his presence is no longer appreciated.
After seven years in Italy, Winter hoped that he could end his career in
style with Ajax but the record-international never managed to secure a first
team place. Former Ajax trainer Co Adriaanse was the first to question Winter's
talents, hiring him out to Sparta Rotterdam for one year. Winter was
hoping for a second chance when Ronald Koeman took over from Co Adriaanse
last season. Although Koeman did bring Winter back to Amsterdam, this
was more to satisfy the fans. Since returning from Sparta, Winter has not
played one game. Aron Winter was born in Paramaribo, Suriname, in 1967,
and made his professional debut under Johan Cruyff in April 1986. With Ajax,
Winter won the Dutch league and cup as well as the UEFA European Cup
Winners' Cup in 1987 and the UEFA Cup in 1992. Winter earned 84 caps

Chivu has been targeted by Real Madrid, it is uncertain
whether the deal will go through as Real Madrid's

will play on for another season. Furthermore, Real have been showing an interest
in Mexican defender Rafael Marquez. It's been reported in the Spanish media
