Vitesse extend Sikora deadline

11 July 2002

Vitesse have decided to give Ajax and Fulham three more days to make an impoved/acceptable offer for Victor Sikora before finally shutting the door on a transfer. Neither club have met the €6 million Euros demanded by the Arnhemmers for the 24 year-old winger and, if they don't come up with the right amount of money by Monday, Sikora will soon be rejoining the Vitesse squad.
Vitesse target Alexandar Rankovic

11 July 2002

Vitesse are targeting Yugoslavian midfielder Alexandar Rankovic and the 23 year-old Rad Belgrado player should be arriving in Arnhem for a trial next week. Vitesse want to reinforce their squad with a defensive midfielder and the Gelredome side's technical manager Jan Streuer has confirmed their interest but also added that the youth international is only one of several candidate. Vitesse will first have to sell Victor Sikora before they can afford to buy any new players.
Sikora gets 3 days to leave Vitesse

09 July 2002

Victor Sikora has been given three more days to sort out the long rumoured move to Ajax or the more recent candidate Fulham! If there's no contract signed with a new employer by Thursday he'll have to rejoin the Vitesse squad and prepare for the new season. Depending on the stories you may have read  he's either going to Amsterdam, because that's his preferred destination, or he's off across the channel to English Premiership side Fulham because it's his dream to play there! Ajax have made an offer of €4 million Euros and followed it up with an improved offer of €4 million plus midfielder Richard Knopper while Fulham are said to have offered Vitesse a straight €6 million Euros! However, Mike Snoei has said that the offers on the table are still €2 million Euros short of what Vitesse want!
Sikora missing at Vitesse's first training

08 July 2002

Victor Sikora was conspicuously absent during Vitesse's first training session of their pre-season preparations this morning. Technical manager Jan Streuer explained on the club's web-site that they wanted to highlight the new squad for the coming season and Sikora obviously has his mind on other things (a move to Fulham or Ajax for example). The new trainer Mike Snoei said,  "I wanted to start this morning with a squad who are motivated to give their all for Vitesse and Victor clearly has other plans. He has the ambition to take the next step in his career and, though I'm not the person to decide who goes or stays, I think he'll be better off at another club. I've also spoken to Dejan Stefanovic about his situation and he's made clear he wants to stay in Arnhem and I expect him to stay."
Sikora signs for Fulham?

07 July 2002

Victor Sikora looks set to sign for English Premiership side Fulham after the Vitesse striker and Dutch international was quoted in Sunday newspaper "The News of the World" as saying that the London side had beaten Ajax at the post in the battle to bag him. Ajax will be disappointed but Sikora is reportedly delighted with the prospect of playing in the Premiership and joining Edwin van der Sar's team!
Fulham bid 6 million Euros for Sikora

05 July 2002

According to a story in Dutch provincial newspaper "De Gelderlander", Fulham have made a bid of €5 million Euros for Vitesse's Victor Sikora, one million more than Ajax's last offer. Vitesse have said that they want 6 million Euros for the Dutch international and we can expect the Amsterdammers to come up with a counter-bid within the next few days.
Vitesse reject latest Ajax bid for Sikora

02 July 2002

Vitesse are said to have already rejected Ajax's latest bid for striker Victor Sikora, saying that the €3.5 or €4 million Euros on offer (depending on the story!) is still too low! Apparently the Arnhemmers are confident that 'foreign interest' for the Dutch international will deliver a financially superior bid than Ajax have so far made. Vitesse are willing to let Sikora go for a minimum of €6 million Euros international which would help solve the last of their financial problems. They've already received their new professional licence from the Dutch FA (KNVB) and can start to look forward to next season.
Michel Kreek moves to AEK Athene

26 Jun 2002

Vitesse's Michel Kreek is moving to play for top Greek club AEK Athene. The midfielder, whose contract with the Arnhemmers ran till 2003, has signed a deal for two seasons with an option for a third but there is no information concerning the transfer fee the Greeks have paid. Kreek's agent Alex Kroes, from MTV Sports International, said there had been interest from Birmingham City, Stoke City, Derby County, Italian side Modena and a couple of German clubs but AEK were the most serious contender. Kreek had asked for permission to leave Arnhem a few months back, saying that he wanted a new challenge. The 31 year-old former Ajax player now has the transfer he wanted and a new opportunity to shine abroad as he has in the past with Italian clubs Padova (1994-96) and Perugia (1996-97).
Vitesse sell Diarra to Olympique Lyon

22 Jun 2002

Vitesse have sold Mahamadou Diarra to French side Olympique Lyon. The 21 year-old midfielder has signed a contract for 5 years and the Arnhemmers have received €6 million Euros for him. He's played 16 internationals for Mali, scoring 3 goals and was hailed as the most promising player during the recent African Nations Cup. He began his professional career in 1993 in Mali with Salif Keita de Bamako, moving on to Greek side OFI Kreta before spending the last 3 years with Vitesse.
Stefanovic wants move to Spain

27 May 2002

Ajax, PSV, Internazionale and FC Barcelona have all approached Vitesse for Dejan Stefanovic. The 27 year-old former Rode Ster Belgrado, Sheffield Wednesday and Perugia defender would prefer to sign for a top Spanish side. Vitesse, who are already discussing the sale of Remco van der Schaaf to PSV and Victor Sikora to Ajax, would be prepared to let Stefanovic go him so that they will be able to afford to keep one of their remaining top players, midfielder Mahamadou Diarra.
Vitesse sign Ethiopian player Yordanos Abay

24 May 2002

Vitesse have signed Ethiopian side EEPC's Yordanos Abay, from Addis Ababa, in a deal worth €40,000 Euros. The 22 year-old only has to pass the obligatory medical in order to make the move to the Gelredome where several other African players are stalled: Mahamadou Diarra from Mali, Emile Mbamba from Cameroon, Mamadou Zongo from Burkina Faso and Matthew Amoah from Ghana.
Vitesse's Bas Wijnen signs for Eagles

11 May 2002

Vitesse are lending former youth international Bas Wijnen to Eerste Divisie side Go Ahead Eagles. The 20 year-old keeper is being hired out next season because he's seeing little action in Arnhem. Eagles-director Martien Vreijsen has also reached an agreement with Vitesse concerning Martijn Kuiper. The 23 year-old defender has been on loan to RKC and RBC but has now signed a contract with the Eagles for the coming 3 years. Go Ahead have recently added Bram Marbus (Sparta), Dennis Hulshoff (Twente) and Michel Kruijer (Excelsior) to the squad.
New Vitesse trainer passes exam

08 May 2002

Vitesse's new trainer Mark Snoei, who has recently taken over from Edward Sturing as trainer of the club, passed his final trainers' exams yesterday and is now officially qualified to start at the Gelredome. The ex-Sparta and Excelsior player received his diploma at the side of PSV's manager Frank Arnessen who also passed the exam.

Vitesse's Diarra attracts foreign interest

05 May 2002

Vitesse's Malinese forward Mahamadou Diarra has attracted the attention of Spain's Primera Division leaders Valencia. According to Dutch provincial daily newspaper, "De Gelderlander", Valencia have already approached Diarra's manager Raymond van Lierop. Diarra has been in form all season and was looking really good during the recent African Nations Cup. Ajax's trainer Ronald Koeman, who worked with Diarra during his Vitesse days, has also shown a keen interest in signing the player. According to "De Gelderlander" Spanish Primera Division side Atlético Madrid and French club Paris Saint-Germain are also in the running for Mahamadou.

Stefanovic not interested in Inter Milan

30 Apr 2002

Vitesse's Yugoslavian defender Dejan Stefanovic has stated that he would rather remain at Vitesse after talking to Italian side Inter Milan. Speaking to Dutch radio station "Omroep Gelderland" Stefanovic said "I have talked to Inter but I think I will stay at Vitesse Arnhem. You never know what might happen, but I would like to stay in Holland." The defender has played a crucial role in the center of Vitesse's defense since joining the club 3 years ago and is very popular with their supporters.  It is also thought that another reason for Stefanovic wanting to remain in Holland is the fact that Yugoslavian and his family will become eligible for Dutch nationality in 2004.

Top 3 target midfielder Farnerud

29 Apr 2002

Swedish midfielder Alexander Farnerud has attracted the attention of Ajax, Feyenoord and Vitesse Arnhem. It would appear that the 17 year-old talent paid a visit to all 3 clubs during the winter break and that all 3 clubs regularly enquire about his progress. Farnerud, who has also attracted the attention of Manchester United and Fulham would prefer a move to Spain or Holland.

Mahamadou Diarra gave the Arnhemmers the advantage on the halfhour and Dejan Stefanovic increased the gap in the 56th. Feyenoord want Sikora and Van der Schaaf

28 Apr 2002

According to Dutch provincial newspaper "De Gelderlander", Feyenoord have officially approached Vitesse for 25 year-old striker Dutch international Victor Sikora and 23 year-old midfielder Remco van der Schaaf. The Rotterdammers are now competing with Ajax and PSV who would also like to sign the players. Van der Schaaf has a deal which runs till 2003 while 25 year-old Sikora's deal runs till 2005. Vitesse are in need of money to sort out their debt problems and are apparently asking €10 million Euros for the duo.
Sparta lose to Vitesse 0 -1

20 Apr 2002

Sparta lineup: Vandenbussche, De Fauw, Marília, Goossen, Van der Meer, Bouchiba, Winter, Koevermans, Boukhari, Conteh, Sanou.
Vitesse lineup: Jevric, Nanu, Knol, Stefanovic, Tim Cornelisse, Diarra, Van der Schaaf, Kreek, Sikora, Amoah, Martel.
Vitesse secured a UEFA Cup place this evening via a 16th minute Victor Sikora goal . Edwin Sturing has done a good job of keeping the team together after Ronald Koeman's departure, they remain undefeated since the winter break and their string of fine performances has now taken them past Heerenveen into 4th place. Sparta have not managed to win in their last 17 games and haven't scored in the last 6! Their nearest thing to a goal this evening was an Elbekay Bouchiba shot that hit the crossbar. In fact they've failed to score in 572 minutes of Ere Divisie football, are without a win since last November and their 7 defeats in a row is a club record! The Spartans are now doomed to taking part in the end- of- season playoffs in order to try and remain in the Ere Divisie.
Groningen lose at home to Vitesse 0-1

14 Apr 2002

Groningen Lineup: Beukenkamp, Allach, Paul Janssen, Schoenmakers, Johansson, Hoogstrate, Matthijs, Van Gessel, Boussaboun, Robben and Tuhuteru.

Vitesse Lineup: Jevric, Knol, Stefanovic, Kreek, Nanu, Diarra, Van der Schaaf, Laros, Sikora, Martel and Mbamba.

Vitesse took another all-important step towards UEFA Cup football next season via an unimpressive 0-1 away win against Groningen this afternoon. It was terrible game to have to watch and the 1st attempt at goal was Matthew Amoah's 64th minute match-winning header. Groningen's Arjen Robben had a few feeble attempts at goal late in the 2nd half but he was unable to show the class that PSV believe he possesses.

Bob Peeters back in training

12 Apr 2002

Vitesse hope that their Belgian forward Bob Peeters will be recovered in time for the last two games of the season. Peeters commenced training last Saturday after spending the last 2 months recuperating from surgery he underwent on his injured foot last February.
Lyon join the race for Mahamadou

12 Apr 2002

Mahamadou Diarra's Vitesse days could soon be over now that several major clubs have shown their interest in the striker. After attracting the attention of Manchester United and Lazio Roma during the African Nations Cup it is now reported that French club Lyon are going to be making Vitesse an offer for the 20 year old Malian international.  "It's a good club," said Diarra.

Ajax approach Vitesse for Diarra

09 Apr 2002

Ajax have made an official approach to Vitesse for striker Mahamadou Diarra after earlier making known their interest in Victor Sikora. The Arnhemmers' technical manager, Jan Streuer, and Ajax's technical manager, Leo Beenhakker, have confirmed the Amsterdammers' interest in both players. It shouldn't be long before Ajax puts in a bid for the duo!

Ajax approach Vitesse for Sikora

07 Apr 2002

Ajax have made an official approach to Vitesse for Victor Sikora - the Amsterdammers were known to have had their eyes on the Dutch international for some time now. The 24 year-old midfielder was the subject of Feyenoord's interest earlier this season but the two clubs couldn't agree terms. Vitesse need the money they'll receive for his transfer and made known in February that they were prepared to sell him. Sikora himself wants to continue his career in Holland for the time being and seems to have made a conscious choice to sign for Ajax in preference to other clubs.

06 Apr 2002

Vitesse lineup: Jevric, Tim Cornelisse, Knol, Stefanovic, Nanu, Kreek, Van der Schaaf, Diarra, Martel, Mbamba and Van Beukering.

Heerenveen lineup: Vonk, Hegeman, Venema, Bakkati, Edman, Väyrynen, Radomski, Selakovic, Nurmela, Allbäck and Lurling.

Vitesse and Heerenveen are two of the contenders for a place in Europe next season. They shared the points in a goalless draw tonight and stay in 5th and 4th place, on 51 points from 30 games and 52 points from 30 played, respectively.

Mahamadou Diarra in trouble with KNVB

06 Apr 2002

The Dutch FA (KNVB) are to hold an investigation into Mahamadou Diarra's misconduct during the recent match against Ajax. Video footage has shown the Vitesse forward stepping on Steven Pienaar's face and giving Jan van Halst a headbutt later in the match.

Vitesse bailed out by Arnhem City council

03 Apr 2002

Vitesse have been granted a loan totalling € 5.4 million Euros by Arnhem city council to allow them to continue operating as a professional club. It was an important decision because a negative vote would have meant almost certainly that Vitesse would have gone bankrupt. This, in turn, would have resulted in a similar fate for the Gelredome as the club is the stadium's main customer, providing most of its income.
PSV want Van der Schaaf

31 Mar 2002

PSV have made an official approach to Vitesse for midfielder Remco van der Schaaf. The 23 year-old is under contract with the Arnhemmers till 2003 but, although a fee has still to be set for the transfer, both clubs have already reached a preliminary agreement.
Vitesse beat Ajax 3 - 1

31 Mar 2002

Vitesse  lineup: Jevric - Cornelisse, Knol, Stefanovic, Nanu - Hofs, van der Schaaf, Diarra, Martel - Sikora, Amoah

Ajax  lineup: Grim - Vierklau, Bergdølmo, Chivu, Maxwell - van Halst, Pienaar, Yakubu - van der Meyde, Mido, Wamberto

Ajax lost valuable championship points today after losing to Vitesse. Ajax were marginally better in the 1st half in Arnhem, creating more chances than the home side. Wamberto came close to scoring, one shot hit the bar and another went just wide. In the 32 minute Mido was brought down in the penalty area and spot-shot specialist Bergdølmo put the inevitable 0 - 1 on the score board, with his 5th of the season. In the 2nd half Vitesse pushed forward and Ajax began to feel the pressure of their opponents' physical style.  In the 71st minute Johny Beukering found the back of the net, drawing Vitesse level and, 3 minutes later, Dutch youth international Ruud Knol put them ahead with a powerful 25 yard shot. In the 85th minute Ajax's Jan van Halst ended any illusions Ajax may have had of leaving Arnhem with a point when he passed the ball to Vitesse's Mbamba who coolly shot passed Ajax's goalie Fred Grim for the points.

Trustfull and Fortes to leave Vitesse

28 Mar 2002

Orlando Trustfull and Carlos Fortes will be looking for a new club after hearing that Vitesse are not going to extend their contracts. Trustfull, who joined the Arnhemmers from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 1997, has been plagued by injury and made few appearances, while Fortes has got in a few matches this season but failed to convince. Martijn Kuiper, Danny Lücke and Michael Samuel have also been told to start looking for a new employer.

NAC draw with Vitesse 3 - 3

24 Mar 2002

NAC  lineup: Gabor Babos, Csaba Fehér, Mark Schenning, Rob Penders, Nebosja Gudelj, Tamas Petö, Alfred Schreuder, Sergio (65. Youssouf Hersi), Earnest Stewart, Glenn Salmon, Kevin Bobson.

Vitesse  lineup: Dragoslav Jevric, Tim Cornelisse, Ruud Knol, Dejan Stefanovic (48. Mahamadou Diarra), Stefan Nanu, Nicky Hofs, Remco van der Schaaf, Michel Kreek, Gert Claessens (46. Didier Martel), Victor Sikora, Matthew Amoah.

NAC and Vitesse, who are still both on target for European football also saw their forwards on target in last night's 3-3 draw. Glen Salmond the score for NAC, picking up a ball from close range after Vitesse's goalie had let it slip through his fingers.  Salmon also put away the 2 - 0 only 7 minutes after the break, heading a Stewart cross into the far corner of the net. Nick Hofs reduced the gap to 2 - 1 with a blistering shot after a lucky pickup from a NAC defender. Vitesse levelled the score via Matthew Amoah, who headed in a Didier Martel cross. Csaba Feher took the score to 3 - 2 in the 68th minute with s pot-shot after the home side were awarded a penalty for Kreek's foul on Hersi. 10 minutes later NAC goalkeeper Babos fumbled a Martel cross, allowing the ball to slip out of his hands and into the path of the eagerly awaiting Nick Hofs who then had no trouble in slamming the ball into the empty net, putting the final 3 - 3 score on the board.
Mahamadou Diarra attracts interest

22 Mar 2002

Vitesse's  attacking midfielder, Mahamadou Diarra, has been attracting the interest of foreign clubs . Both Manchester United and Lazio Roma have been following the 20 year old African international who made such an impression recently during the African cup in helping Mali to reach the semi-finals.
Vitesse and PSV in goalless draw

17 Mar 2002

Vitesse lineup: Jevric, Tim Cornelisse, Knol, Stefanovic, Nanu, Hofs, Van der Schaaf, Kreek, Sikora, Amoah and Fortes.

PSV lineup: Waterreus, Ooijer, Faber, Nikiforov, Heintze, Rommedahl, Van Bommel, Lucius, Gakhokidze, Kezman and Vennegoor of Hesselink.

Vitesse held PSV to a goalless draw which means no change in either team's table position. The Eindhoven side drop even more vital points in their attempt to retain the title and 26,000 fans were 'treated' to a scrappy and disappointing match. Vitesse dominated the 1st half with their tight and compact style but ran out of energy after the break. PSV took over halfway through the 2nd half but failed to impress or score. They remain 3rd on 50 points from 26 games while Vitesse stay in 5th place on 46 from 27 played.

Ere Divisie Friendly Roundup

13 Mar 2002

Vitesse won their friendly (a chance for players coming back from injury to get in some matchplay) against Vitesse amateurs 7 - 0 with goals by Sone (2), Martel, Kuiper, Verhaar, Claessens and Aelbrecht.
Vitesse beat Twente 2 - 0

09 Mar 2002

Vitesse lineup: Jevric, Tim Cornelisse, Knol, Stefanovic, Laros, Hofs, Kreek, Fortes, Sikora, Van Beukering and Amoah.

Twente lineup: Boschker, El-Brazi, Grujic, Pothuizen, Hulshoff, Cziommer, Van der Doelen, Van de Paar, Van der Laan, Caïro and De Gier.

Vitesse stay on course for their goal of a place in Europe next season with this hollow victory in a match characterised by bad passing and sloppy football. Neither side 'deserved' to win but 2 goals in the last 15 minutes gave the Arnhemmers the points. Dejan Stefanovicd the score from a Michel Kreek freekick with his second goal of the season and Belgian substitute Gert Claessens made it 2 - 0 for Vitesse in the dying seconds of a match that never came alive.

Mbamba gets 3 match ban

09 Mar 2002

Vitesse's Emile Mbamba has been suspended for 3 matches by the Dutch FA (KNVB) for hitting Marc Luijpers on the back of the head in the recent match against Roda. The Cameroon striker will miss the matches against Twente, PSV and NAC.
Babangida leaves Vitesse this summer

07 Mar 2002

Tijjani Babangida will be leaving Vitesse, where he's been on loan from Ajax, at the end of the season and looking for a new club. The Arnhemmers have no more use for him and the 28 year-old outside-right doen't want to return to Ajax because of the fact that he had a conflict with Ronald Koeman last December when he was still Vitesse's coach
Roda lose to Vitesse 0 - 2

04 Mar 2002

Roda lineup: Kalac, Vrede, Rudge, Luijpers, Sonkaya, Lawal, Van Dessel, Vicelich, Tchoutang, Sonko and Anastasiou.

Vitesse lineup: Van Fessum, Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Knol, Diarra, Laros, Fortes, Hofs, Sikora, Amoah and Mbamba.

Vitesse stay on course for European football next season after this win against a hard working Roda. The 'Kerkrade Crew' were determined to show the fans that their performance in their UEFA Cup 4th round return leg adventure in Milan last Thursday wasn't a one-off! Sonko, Anastasiou and Liujpers all had good chances to score for them but failed to find the back while Vitesse were sharper in their counters and Emile Mbamba put them ahead in the 42nd minute. Roda worked even harder after the break but, despite the visitors being reduced to 10 men in the 68th when Mbamba got a red card, Matthew Amoah sealed the points in the 79th minute to lift the Arnhemmers past NAC into 5th place on 42 points from 25 played. Roda will not be pleased with the result and the speculation that trainer George Leekens will not stay beyond this season will undoubtedly continue. The 'Kerkrade Crew' stay in 15th place on 28 points from 25 played.

Bob Peeters out for 10 weeks

04 Mar 2002

Vitesse's Bob Peeters is about to have an operation to repair a fractured bone in his foot which will keep the Belgian striker out of action for the next 10 weeks. The injury was discovered in February but, at the time, an operation was not deemed necessary. The former Roda player has been having a poor season with only 2 goals in 16 appearances.
Vitesse and Den Bosch draw 1 - 1

23 Feb 2002

Vitesse lineup: Jevric, Tim Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Knol, Kreek, Hofs, Diarra, Fortes, Sikora, Mbamba and Laros.

Den Bosch lineup: Mampaey, Faerber, Van der Hoorn, Uneken, Van Kapel, Mourad, Peys, Michels, Deckers, Van den Eede and De Freitas.

Den Bosch's trainer Wiljan Vloet had said, before the match, that he was planning to build a wall of blue in front of his goalie Kris Mampaey, and he wasn't joking! Vitesse did their best to penetrate the 'Berlin Wall' and kept banging their collective head on it throughout the 1st half, without success. Instead Den Bosch were able to take the lead with their first chance of the match via Fabian de Freitas in the 19th minute. The Arnhemmers persisted in their attacks and were rewarded when Michel Kreek's cross was headed in by Mahamadou Diarra for the equalizer in the 34th. After the break they managed to break through the visitors' defence more often but without the desired effect - some more goals! Dejan Stefanovic came closest but his attempt hit the post. Vitesse climb one place to 5th on 39 points from 24 played after this draw while Den Bosch drop a place to 14th on 26 points from 24 played.

Vitesse's injured trio

19 Feb 2002

Didier Martel, Stefan Nanu and Bob Peeters are all injured, the first two picked up hamstring injuries in last weekend's 2 - 1 win against Feyenoord while the Belgian striker has bruising of the upper foot. None will be available for the coming match against Den Bosch and it's unlikely whether Remco van der Schaaf will be ready to play either as he's still not resumed training with the squad.
Vitesse beat Feyenoord 2 - 1

17 Feb 2002

Vitesse lineup: Jevric, Tim Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Kreek, Nanu, Hofs, Knol, Martel, Fortes, Sikora and Diarra.

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier, Emerton, Gyan, Paauwe, Rzasa, Ono, Bosvelt, Van Wonderen, Kalou, Van Hooijdonk and Van Persie.

The youthful aggression of the Arnhemmers on show this afternoon earn them 3 valuable points, while Feyenoord have dropped what could turn out to be vital points in their bid for the championship title, and still have to book a win in the Gelredome. "Japanese Wizard"  Shinji Ono put the Rotterdammers ahead in the 26th minute, Kalou serving up the pass, Pierre van Hooijdonk stepping over the ball for Ono to slot home. The advantage was short-lived as Dejan Stefanovic equalized 4 minutes later. After the break the home team pressed for a goal and got one with Emile Mbamba's 52nd minute shot. They had more chances to increase the number of goals-on-the-board but Mbamba and Cornelisse both wasted theirs. Despite Bert van Marwijk bringing on Leonardo, Korneev and Elmander Vitesse remained the more threatening of the two teams, Ono's shot hitting the woodwork in the dying seconds the only real chance Feyenoord had to earn a point.

Feyenoord bid for Sikora?

12 Feb 2002

Feyenoord are rumoured to have made Vitesse an offer for striker Victor Sikora. Although several clubs have expressed interest in the Dutch international Feyenoord are the first to actually amke an official bid. The Rotterdammers are offering €4 million Euros but the Gelredome side want €7 million while German side Hertha Berlin and Ajax's Ronald Koeman (Sikora's former trainer) could well soon join the bidding.
Purrel Fränkel signs for Vitesse

11 Feb 2002

De Graafschap's Purrel Fränkel has agreed terms with Vitesse and, apart from a few formalities, the deal should be closed this week. The 25 year-old left-back will be making the move to Arnhem at the end of this season.
Vitesse and Fortuna share points 1 - 1

09 Feb 2002

Vitesse lineup: Jevric, Tim Cornelisse, Van der Schaaf, Stefanovic, Nanu, Hofs, Kreek, Martel, Fortes, Van Beukering and Sikora.

Fortuna lineup: Hesp, Emeran, Dirkx, Volmer, Hermans,- Heering, Van der Hoeven, Haeldermans, Landerl, Simons and Hamming.

This was the 3rd time the teams had faced each other this season and once again Fortuna denied Vitesse a win. The visitors deserved their point with tight defensive work and a frontline that looks a lot more dangerous since the addition of hired gun Regillio Simons last Thursday. Marco Heering gave the visitors the lead in the 29th minute but Didier Martel equalized in the 41st. Vitesse had their chances in the 2nd half but failed to put any more goals-on-the-board, to the obvious and audible disatisfaction of their fans. The Arnhemmers move up a place to 6th on 35 points from 22 games but Utrecht play tomorrow and could well leapfrog them again. Fortuna are without hope at the bottom on 11 points from 22 games.

Seville want Vitesse's Kreek

08 Feb 2002

Spanish side Seville have approached Vitesse for their defender Michel Kreek and, if he impresses in a 2nd viewing, he could well be off to the Primera Liga this summer. Kreek is flattered by the attention he's getting and would be pleased to go abroad again. It's bad (and good) news for the financially troubled club who could be about to lose their 3rd key defender this year after Marc van Hintum left for Bundesliga side Hannover 96 and Marian Zeman was lent to Greek club PAOK Saloniki.
PSV want Vitesse's Remco de Graaf

06 Feb 2002

PSV scouts have been following Vitesse's Remco van der Schaaf with increasing interest and the club is said to be prepared to offer €3½ million Euros for him. The 22 year-old midfielder is being lined up as a possible successor to Mark van Bommel who, in his turn, is being linked with a move to Arsenal as successor to Patrick Vieira who could be off to Real Madrid this summer. Van der Schaaf, who has a contract till the summer of 2003 with the Arnhemmers, is happy where he is for the moment and is expecting to be made an improved offer shortly.
Gert Kruys to take over at Vitesse??

29 Jan 2002

It's rumoured that Cambuur Leeuwarden's Gert Kruys is favourite to become the new coach at the Gelredome next season, although Willem II are also said to be interested in the 40 year-old. His contract runs out with the Eerste Divisie side this summer and he could be set to take over the reins from Edwin Sturing when the current caretaker coach takes charge of the club's youth scheme this summer.

09 Feb 2002

Vitesse lineup: Jevric - Tim Cornelisse, van der Schaaf, Stefanovic, Nanu - Hofs, Kreek, Martel, Fortes - van Beukering, Sikora

Fortuna lineup: Hesp - Emeran, Dirkx, Volmer, Hermans - Heering, van der Hoeven, Haeldermans, Landerl - Simons, Hamming

Vitesse want De Graafschap's Fränkel

29 Jan 2002

Vitesse are interested in signing De Graafschap's Purrel Fränkel as a replacement for Marc van Hintum, who recently moved to German side Hannover 96. The Arnhemmers' technical manager Jan Streurer confirmed their interest - "left-backs are thin on the ground at the moment". The 25 year-old, whose contract in Doetinchem runs out at the end of this season, joined the "SuperBoeren" from Telstar in 1998 and has played 93 league matches for them.
Vitesse beat NEC 2 - 1

27 Jan 2002

Vitesse lineup: Jevric, Tim Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Dingsdag, Nanu, Fortes, Van der Schaaf, Hofs, Sikora, Peeters and Martel.

NEC lineup: Gentenaar, Schuurman, Hesp, Wisgerhof, Leiwakabessy, Simr, Latuheru, Wielaert, Dennis de Nooijer, Demouge and Van Rijswijk.

Vitesse won the Gelderland derby, trainer Edwin Sturing fielding a young side with Michael Dingsdag in a central defending role and a debut for A-junior Nicky Hofs. Hofs had a great game in an attacking midfield role and showed some good handling of the ball - a talent to be watched and enjoyed! Another teenager, Frank Demouge, put the visitors ahead in the 10th minute but (Burnley-bound) Bob Peeters equalized in the 25th and Remco van der Schaaf put away a spot-shot for the 2 - 1 in the 49th minute. Vitesse remain unbeaten in the Gelredome this season and are now 7th on 33 from 20 while NEC are 11th on 25 from 20 played.

Vitesse lend Zeman to PAOK Saloniki

26 Jan 2002

Vitesse are lending their Slovakian international Marian Zeman to Greek side PAOK Saloniki with an option to buy. The 22 year-old, who's under contract in Arnhem till 2003, has failed to make an impression since arriving in Holland in 1997 but may do better in Greece where PAOK, in 3rd place, are currently in hot pursuit of the title.
Vitesse miss injured players against NEC

23 Jan 2002

Vitesse will miss midfielder Louis Laros in their match against NEC on Sunday - he's still not fully recovered from a knee injury. The injured Gert Claessens and Theo Janssen will also be unavailable to play, and so will Tijjani Babangida, Matthew Amoah and Mahamadou Diarra, who are all playing for their respective countries in the Africa Cup.
Dragoslav Jevric is back at Vitesse

22 Jan 2002

Dragoslav Jevric is back as 1st choice goalie at Vitesse after losing the job under Ronald Koeman, who preferred to use Jimmy van Fessem when Edwin Zoetebier left for Feyenoord. Van Fessem is angered by Edwin Sturing's choice but the coach obviously thinks otherwise.
Burnley want Vitesse's Bob Peeters

21 Jan 2002

Burnley have expressed an interest in Vitesse's striker Bob Peeters - English First Division side want to hire the Belgian with an option to buy. Peeters arrived at the Gelredome in the summer of 2000, supposedly as the replacement for Pierre van Hooijdonk but has had found it difficult to fill P-Air's shoes, scoring only 9 goals in 46 appearances.
Van Hintum signs for Hannover

17 Jan 2002

Vitesse's Dutch international Marc van Hintum has signed for German Bundesliga 2nd Division side Hannover on a contract for one and a half years, with an option for another year. Hannover have paid €350.000 for the 34 year-old former Willem II and RKC defender in the hope that his experience will help the table-toppers gain promotion to the top rank in Germany.
Vitesse still in financial no-man's land

16 Jan 2002

Vitesse remain faced by huge financial problems and are having to use the last €3.3 million Euros of the money lent the club by the "Vrienden van Vitesse" (Friends of Vitesse) to pay January and February's bills. The group of 16 private individuals lent the Arnhemmers  €7.3 million Euros at the end of last year to get them through this season. However, the unsuccessful search for a new shirt sponsor plus the fact that their attempt to get a reduction in the costs of the hire agreement for the 'Gelredome' has also failed means they will have used up all of the money before the 2nd half of the season kicks-off.
Vitesse beat Rostock 3 - 0

15 Jan 2002

Vitesse won their friendly against German side Hansa Rostock 3 -0 0 thanks to two goals by Dejan Stefanovic and one by Emile Mbamba. They were 3 - 0 up by halftime and played most of the 2nd half with only ten men after Remco van der Schaaf was sent off in the 48th minute. The match also saw the debut of talented young midfielder Nicky Hofs.
Vitesse lose to Hannover 96 2 - 0

13 Jan 2002

Edwin Sturing is having real problems getting Vitesse back on track since he took over as trainer following Ronald Koeman's departure for Ajax. The Arnhemmers lost 2 - 0 in their friendly in Vilamoura Portugal against Bundesliga 2nd Division side Hannover 96.  Jan Simak and Babacar N'Diaye  scored the German side's goals.
Sturing trainer only till end of season

04 Jan 2002

Edwin Sturing and Vitesse have agreed that the team's current trainer, who took over after Ronald Koeman's departure for Ajax, will move over at the end of this season. The 38 year-old will get the assistance of former Vitesse defender Theo Bos before being put in charge of the club's youth academy, alongside Joop Brand.
Vitesse and RKC draw 1 - 1

22 Dec 2001

Vitesse lineup: Jevric, Tim Cornelisse, Knol, Kreek, Nanu, Diarra, Van der Schaaf, Laros, Sikora, Peeters and Martel.

RKC lineup: Van Dijk, Lamey, Nascimento, Van den Berg, De Graef, Van Diemen, Van Wanrooy, Fuchs, Hoogendorp, Janssen and Yuri Cornelisse.

Vitesse went down 4 - 1 to Den Bosch and 5 - 1 to Ajax in their last two matches but were unable to change their fortunes in this match. RKC could have gone a couple of goals up after Gary de Graef put away the first in the 1st minute but Nanu cleared Peter van den Berg's header off the line and another attempt hit the woodwork. Vitesse tried to get into the match but were too disorganised and sloppy to put together threatening moves. Ruud Knol headed in the equalizer from a Didier Martel corner in the 23rd. After the break the Arnhemmers were more agressive and Martel's run ended with a penalty for De Graef's handsball. Unfortunately Kreek didn't get it past goalie Van Dijk and both teams were left sharing the points.

Sturing stays till end of season

22 Dec 2001

Edward Sturing, formerly assistant to ex- Vitesse coach Ronald Koeman, has been given the go ahead to look after the team for the rest of the current season.
Ajax smash Vitesse 5 - 1

19 Dec 2001

Ajax lineup: Dudilica, Heitinga, Bergdølmo, Chivu, De Cler, Yakubu, Van der Vaart, O'Brien, Van der Meyde, Machlas and Wamberto.

Vitesse lineup: Jevric, Nanu, Knol, Kreek, Van Hintum, Diarra, Van der Schaaf, Claessens, Laros, Sikora and Amoah.

Ajax had no trouble putting away Vitesse tonight and the win puts them top of the table again. Rafael van der Vaart gave them the lead in the 16th minute but Gert Claessens equalized quickly for Vitesse in the 18th before Van der Vaart put away his 2nd in the 26th.  John O'Brien made it 3 - 1 in the 29th, Wamberto took the score to 4 - 1 in the 47th and Van der Vaaart made it a hattrick for him in the 82nd for the 5 - 1. After 4 consecutive defeats in the ArenA at the hands of the Arnhemmers this resounding win really gave the home fans something to celebrate!

Den Bosch beat Vitesse 4 - 1

15 Dec 2001

Den Bosch lineup: De Jong, Faerber, Van der Hoorn, Uneken, Plum, Michels, De Freitas, Deckers, Van der Laak, Van den Eede and Mourad.

Vitesse lineup: Jevric, Nanu, Stefanovic, Kreek, Van Hintum, Diarra, Van der Schaaf, Laros, Sikora, Peeters and Martel.

This was Den Bosch's 3rd win in a row! Bart van den Eede put the home team ahead in the 41st but Michel Kreek equalized in the 44th. Van den Eede scored his 2nd of the evening (and 9th of the season) in the 60th for the 2 - 1. Mourad took the score to 3 - 1 in the 82nd and Patrick Deckers added a 4th in the 90th. It puts Den Bosch in 9th place but they know full well that every point they can get is needed to keep out of the 'danger' zone and the fact that De Graafschap and Twente, two of their bottom-half-of-the-table neighbours, shared the points this evening with Willem II and AZ helps their situation as well.

Vitesse injuries

10 Dec 2001

Vitesse's Dejan Stefanovic has broken his little finger during the match against De Graafschap. He'll be operated on tomorrow to repair the damage and should be able to play against Den Bosch this coming Sunday. Whether goalie Jimmy van Fessem will be able to play is something else - he strained his left knee in a clash with Peter van Vossen and looks doubtful for the next Ere Divisie match.
Babangida late again!

08 Dec 2001

Vitesse's Tijjani Babangida missed out on playing last night against De Graafschap because he turned up too late for the match! It's an offence that led to the former VVV, Roda JC, Ajax and Gençlerbirligi striker being dropped from the squad by former coach Ronald Koeman earlier in the season!
Vitesse beat De Graafschap 2 - 1

07 Dec 2001

Vitesse lineup: Van Fessem, Nanu, Stefanovic, Kreek, Van Hintum, Van der Schaaf, Claessens, Laros, Sikora, Van Beukering and Martel.

De Graafschap lineup: Postma, Bot, Splinter, Bakens, Fränkel, Berck Beelenkamp, Schulp, Van Leerdam, Hupkes, Valeev and Van Vossen.

It took till after the mediocre 1st half before there was any real action but Vitesse, in their first match without Ronald Koeman, got going after the break and Belgian striker Bob Peeters kicked off with a goal in the 47th.  The Arnhemmers got better and better leading to Gert Claessens adding a 2nd in the 54th while Dennis Schulp put away a spot-shot in the 68th for the "SuperBoeren" (his 25th professional goal). Laros missed a spot-shot for Vitesse but they now have their 11th win in a row and climb to 3rd place in the table.

Van Hintum wants to play one more year

07 Dec 2001

Vitesse's Marc van Hintum has told the club that he wants to play for at least one more season before starting a new job with the Arnhemmers technical staff. The 34 year-old defender's contract runs out at the end of this season but he feels that he can continue to make a substantial contribution and would miss playing too much to stop footballing now. He'll be sitting down to discuss his future at the Gelredome in the New Year.
Edward Sturing takes over at Vitesse

03 Dec 2001

Edward Sturing has taken over as trainer at Vitesse. The former Vitesse player was Ronald Koeman's assistant and also stepped in to look after the team in 1999 for 8 matches after Herbert Neumann's departure.
Koeman and Krol take over at Ajax

03 Dec 2001

Ronald Koeman has been presented to the press as the new Ajax coach this morning and his assistant will be Oranje's assistant trainer Ruud Krol - Koeman has signed a contract for 2½ years and Krol for 3½ years. Both men previously played for Ajax (Koeman 94 games and Krol 457!!) while Koeman was Louis van Gaal's assistant at Barcelona, before taking over at Vitesse, and Krol has coached KV Mechelen (Belgium, Servette (Switzerland), Zamalek Caïro (Egypt), Al Wahad (United Arab Emirates) and also the Egyptian national team. Ajax were able to tempt Vitesse with an acceptably large sum of money to allow Koeman to depart while Krol's role with Oranje and the  KNVB was, to all intents and purposes, at an end after Van Gaal's departure. The former Ajax, Barcelona and Oranje international will lead his first training at the ArenA this afternoon and will be on the bench tomorrow for the match against Fortuna.
Utrecht beat Vitesse 3 - 1

02 Dec 2001

Utrecht lineup: Wapenaar, Vreven, Roest, Zwaanswijk, Bosschaart, Tanghe, Jean-Paul de Jong, Van Mol, Van den Bergh, Kuyt and Gluscevic.

Vitesse lineup: Van Fessem, Nanu, Stefanovic, Kreek, Van Hintum, Van der Schaaf, Sikora, Laros, Martel, Diarra and Van Beukering.

Another convincing win by the Domstad side maintains their unbeaten home record. Igor Gluscevic put them ahead after 20 minutes but Mahamadou Diarra headed in Didier Martel's pass for the equalizer in the 39th. The Frenchman was treated to a chorus of whistles from his old fans everytime he made contact with the ball. After the break Stefaan Tanghe quickly made it 2 - 1 with a curling freekick that hit the back of the net in the 49th and, after Vitesse fought back (Diarra hitting the bar), Gluscevic made it 3 - 1 in the 84th. The result lifts them into 5th place on goal average ahead of PSV who also have 27 points. Vitesse slip to 7th as Koeman most likely packs his bags for Amsterdam.

Koeman new Ajax coach?

30 Nov 2001

According to Dutch public broadcaster NOS's Studio Sport prograame Ronald Koeman is said to be almost certainly the new coach at Ajax - only a price has to be agreed for which Vitesse will allow the former Ajax, Barcelona and Dutch international to leave Arnhem. Vitesse chairman Jos Vaessen reacted with surprise when asked for a reaction, stating that he knew nothing and had heard nothing from Ajax (as yet). However, it's rumoured that the Amsterdammers and Koeman have already held their first round of talks and his agent Ger Langendijk confirms that negotiations are underway. A final decision is expected by Monday when Koeman could well be moving in to take over at the ArenA. At the moment he's concentrating on Sunday's match between Vitesse and Utrecht and won't comment further. He played for Ajax between 1983 and 1986, winning the League with them in 1995 and the Cup the following year, was capped 78 times for Holland and scored 14 goals in an illustrious career. As coach he favours a style of play which makes use of two wingers, something which Ajax have always been famous for, while being respected for his consistency in approach, coupled with a tough and honest style. He's been looking after Vitesse since January 1st 2000, before which he was Guus Hiddink's assistant during the World Cup in 1998.
Vitesse beat Roda 2 - 0

24 Nov 2001

Vitesse lineup: Van Fessem, Nanu, Stefanovic, Kreek, Van Hintum, Van der Schaaf, Sikora, Martel, Peeters and Van Beukering

Roda lineup: Roorda, Senden, Vrede, Luijpers, Sonkaya, Van Dessel, Gregoor van Dijk, Nygaard, Lawal, Anastasiou and Tchoutang.

Ronald Koeman's decision to field an attacking formation paid off with Vitesse's 7th win of the season which also maintains their unbeaten record at home. With 4 strikers up front it wasn't long before they found the back-of-the-net and Remco van der Schaaf put them ahead after only 7 minutes. Roda were unable to creat any threatening moves of their own and Vitesse were able to patiently bide their time looking for the chance to get a 2nd goal. After the break Bob Peeters was replaced by Mahamadou Diarra and the home team pulled back in defence in order to hold onto to their advantage. Roda's Regillio Vrede and Yannis Anastasiou missed a couple ofngs to even the score but the crowd were treated to a beauty of a goal in the  72nd minute by Victor Sikora to secure the points for Vitesse who are now on equal points with Ajax (the Amsterdammers have 2 games in hand) while Roda are in last-but-one position on 12 points.

Stefan Nanu stays with Vitesse

19 Nov 2001

Rumanian Stefan Nanu has extended his contract with Vitesse for an extra year till 2003. The former Extensiv Craiova and Farul Constanta wing-defender joined the Arnhemmers from Rapid Bucharest two years ago and has played 43 matches for them, scoring just the one goal. He's currently the regular stand-in for Marc van Hintum and Tim Cornelisse.
Feyenoord beat Vitesse 3 - 2

17 Nov 2001

Feyenoord lineup: Zoetebier, Gyan, Sprockel, De Haan, Rzasa, Kalou, Bosvelt, Van Wonderen, Elmander, Tomasson and Van Hooijdonk.

Vitesse lineup: Van Fessem, Nanu, Knol, Kreek, Van Hintum, Diarra, Van der Schaaf, Laros, Sikora, Van Beukering and Claessens.

Feyenoord won this hard fought match to leapfrog the Arnhemmers into 2nd place. Civard Sprockel was given his debut and the youth international took it all in his stride, calmly taking his place next to Ferry de Haan at the heart of the defence. Pierre van Hooijdonk got theng goal in the 26th with one of his specialist freekicks. Jhonny van Beukering wasn't far behind, getting an equalizer in the 27th. Danish international Jon Dahl Tomasson made it 2 - 1 in the 39th, as his shot was deflected into the back of the net off Michel Kreek's head. He then added his 2nd of the evening for the 3 - 1 in the 52nd and his 10th goal of the season - he now passes Ajax's Rafael van der Vaart to become Ere Divisie top scorer. This seemed to finally wake Vitesse up and they threw everything into attack for the rest of the match but Ruud Knol, Remco van der Schaaf, Gert Claessens and Bob Peeters all failed, leaving Victor Sikora to get one back in the 55th. Feyenoord are now only one point behind Ajax!

Louis Laros returns against Feyenoord

17 Nov 2001

Louis Laros returns to action for Vitesse tonight against Feyenoord after being injured in the 4 - 1 away defeat by NEC on August 27th last year. The 29 year-old joined the Arnhemmers from Willem II in 1995 and has played 137 times for Vitesse (scoring 11 goals) out of a total of 241 Ere Divisie matches.
Vitesse's financial problems continue

17 Nov 2001

Vitesse's financial crisis continues with the news that the club may not be able to pay their monthly bills (which add up to nearly €2 million Euros) when the next season kicks-off in August 2002. They are desperately in need of a new shirt sponsor to bring in some money but noone is interested so far. The sale of keeper Edwin Zoetebier to Feyenoord and Peter Wisgerhof to NEC helped to bridge the gap but other players will have to be sold at the end of this current season if no other solution to their long-running money problems is found. The organisation running the Gelredome stadium has also announced that it cannot afford the repayments on the mortgage taken out to pay for its construction - the squeeze is on!!
Koeman and Vitesse discuss future at Xmas

14 Nov 2001

Ronald Koeman and Vitesse will be sitting down during the winter break to discuss the trainer's future with the club - his current contract runs out at the end of the season. The Arnhemmers have still got some rather serious financial problems while the Gelredome organisation is itself also in the middle of a cash-flow crisis. To add to the club's problems Koeman has been in conflict with the squad regarding its lack of commitment. It's not exactly a secret either that his ambition-in-life is to become Barcelona's coach while the job of Oranje coach (if/when Louis van Gaal goes) also beckons.
Ere Divisie suspensions

08 Nov 2001

Vitesse's Tim Cornelisse has appealed against a 4 match ban and had it reduced to 3 matches for giving PSV's John de Jong an elbow-jab.
Theo Janssen breaks shin bone

06 Nov 2001

Vitesse's Theo Jansen, recently 'relegated' to the youth squad for disciplinary reasons, has broken his shin bone in the match between Vitesse's and Twente's youth teams. He's already been operated on for the injury and will be out of action for 6 months.
Willem II and Vitesse draw 1 - 1

02 Nov 2001

Willem II lineup: De Vlieger, J. Mathijsen, Janssens, Van Nieuwstadt, Mariana, Landzaat, Victoria, Caluwé, Abdellaoui, Bombarda and Ceesay.

Vitesse lineup: Van Fessem, Tim Cornelisse, Knol, Kreek, Nanu, Amoah, Van der Schaaf, Claessens, Sikora, Van Beukering and Babangida.

The "Tricolores" deserved to win this match with their attacking football - they refuse to adopt what's being called the 'new realism' (read defensive tactics) style of football on evidence at several clubs in Holland. Yassine Abdellaoui and  Jattoo Ceesay were wing-forwards with Bombarda in the middle. Vitesse have adopted the 'new realism' (mostly because their strikers are not performing - midfielder Remco van der Schaaf is their top scorer on two goals!) and use their wingers as midfielders to feed lonely striker Jhon van Beukering. Michel Kreek cleared an Abdellaoui attempt from the line in the 34th minute and Youssef Mariana shot wide for the home team a little later in the 1st half while the visitors gave Geert de Vlieger little to do. Van Fessem stopped a Bombarda shot in the 54th before the 29 year-old Argentinian striker, who was celebrating his 200th Ere Divisie match ( his debut was on August 26th 1994 for Groningen in the away match against Heerenveen, who won 2-0), scored what looked like being the match-winner in the 68th.  Koeman brought on Martel and Mbamba for the last 20 minutes as Vitesse finally applied some pressure with the result that, after near misses by Mbamba and Van Beukering, Matthew Amoah headed in an injury time equalizer in the 90th.

Vitesse injury news

02 Nov 2001

Mamadou Zongo is going to have a 2nd knee operation - he damaged it in the match against Twente in February and it's causing him problems again. Good news is that outside-left  Louis Laros is back after a year on the sick list -  his last match was against NEC on August 27th 2000.
Vitesse drop Theo Janssen

29 Oct 2001

Vitesse have relegated vice-captain Theo Janssen to the reserve team as a disciplinary measure - the club is giving no details, as yet, concerning the nature of the misdemeanour or for how long the 'punishment' will last!!?? The 20 year-old has become an important feature of the Arnhemmers' lineup this season and is also an influential player for Jong Oranje's Under 21s.
Peter Wisgerhof signs for NEC

29 Oct 2001

Peter Wisgerhof, on loan since last year from Vitesse, will be signing a contract with NEC for three and a half years in January next year. The clubs reached agreement on the terms of the transfer today. The 21 year-old defender has become a regular face in the Nijmegen lineup, playing 34 games for them  last season and appearing in all their matches this season (scoring 4 goals).
Twente and Vitesse in goalless draw

27 Oct 2001

Twente lineup: Boschker, Van der Weerden, Pothuizen, Grujic, Polak, Van der Leegte, Van de Paar, Van der Doelen, Van der Laan, Caïro and Booth.

Vitesse lineup: Van Fessem, Nanu, Knol, Kreek, Tim Cornelisse, Diarra, Janssen, Van der Schaaf, Claessens - Amoah and Sikora.

The "Tukkers" were the better side but were unable to convert their dominance into goals - their 'hardcore' fans are so fed up with their performance so far this season that, as a sign of protest, they didn't take their seats until 10 minutes after the kickoff. Sjaak Polak and substitute Richard Kollmann saw their attempts go just over and just wide. Vitesse stay in 2nd place while Twente are stuck in 14th.

Vitesse's Tim Cornelisse gets 4 match ban

26 Oct 2001

Vitesse's Tim Cornelisse has lost his appeal against a 3 match ban, with an extra 'suspended/conditional' match, and seen his 'punishment' increased  - he's now got to sit out a ban for 4 matches, unconditionally, instead. He received the suspension for an elbow-jab he gave PSV's John de Jong. It's hopefully a sign of the Dutch FA's (KNVB) impatience with the increasing on-pitch violence!
Vitesse in narrow 1 - 0 win against NAC

20 Oct 2001

Vitesse lineup: Van Fessem, Tim Cornelisse, Knol, Kreek, Nanu, Diarra, Claessens, Van der Schaaf, Sikora, Van Beukering and Martel.

NAC lineup: Babos, Fehér, Penders, Risamasu, Gudelj, Petö, Hersi, Schreuder, Stewart, Salmon and Bobson.

The fans would have liked more goals and the match was nothing to write home about but the points keep on rolling in. Vitesse have still not solved their problems up front and their defence has been mainly responsible for keeping them in with a chance at the top. NAC will be disappointed, after having won 2 - 4 last season, to experience their first defeat in the Gelredome. It was a timely substitution that saved the points once more for Vitesse - on Wednesday it Mbamba who snatched a late gaol against Groningen and tonight it was the turn of Tijjani Babangida. His goal in the 57th minute was enough to secure 3 points for Vitesse and keep them in 2nd place in the table.

Dingsdag signs for Vitesse

19 Oct 2001

Michael Dingsdag, who made his debut against NEC last Sunday, has signed a contract with Vitesse till July 2006. The 19 year-old was playing as an amateur for the Arnhemmers until Ronald Koeman called him up to replace the suspended  Dejan Stefanovic.
Vitesse beat Groningen 1 - 0

17 Oct 2001

Vitesse lineup: Van Fessem, Tim Cornelisse, Knol, Kreek, Nanu, Mustapha, Janssen, Claessens, Diarra, Van Beukering and Martel.

Groningen lineup: Beukenkamp, Elshot, Schoenmakers, Allach, Van Gessel, Matthijs, Boussaboun, Broerse, Krstev Tuhuteru and Robben.

A goal by super-sub Emile Mbamba in the 89th minute gave Vitesse the points. The 1st half saw both teams struggling to get into gear but the 2nd half was hard fought and filled with better football. Mile Krstev had the best chance for Groningen but his shot went over while Jhon van Beukering hit the post for the Arnhemmers before Mbamba finally slotted away the late goal. The win takes Vitesse into 2nd place.

Tim Cornelisse rejects ban

16 Oct 2001

Vitesse's Tim Cornelisse will appeal against the 4 match ban handed out by the Dutch FA (KNVB) for the elbow-jab he gave PSV's John de Jong. The case will now be heard by the KNVB's disciplinary committee which means that the 23 year-old defender can probably play against Groningen on Wednesday.
NEC beat Vitesse 1 - 0

14 Oct 2001

NEC lineup: Gentenaar, Schuurman, Wisgerhof, Hesp, Wielaert, Zonneveld, Latuheru, Ax, Simr, Tumba and Hristov.

Vitesse lineup: Van Fessem, Cornelisse, Dingsdag, Kreek, Nanu, Knol, Janssen, Claessens, Babangida, Van Beukering and Van der Schaaf.

Rob Wielaert, on loan from PSV, made his debut this afternoon in a hard fought match where Jarda Simr scored the only goal in the 58th minute. It's the 3rd consecutive defeat for the Arnhemmers in their Gelderland derby with Nijmegen's NEC who climb gratefully to 14th while Vitesse slip from 2nd to 3rd.

4 game ban for Cornelisse-6 for Stefanovic

12 Oct 2001

The Dutch FA (KNVB) have handed out a 4 match ban to Vitesse's Tim Cornelisse for his elbow-jab offence on PSV's John de Jong.  His teammate Dejan Stefanovic has decided not to appeal against his 6 match ban, for kicking Fortuna's Rolf Landerl in the face, after he'd earlier been fined by Vitesse and also voluntarily offered his 'victim' financial compensation.
Stefanovic gets 6 match ban

05 Oct 2001

Vitessse's defender Dejan Stefanovic has had his 8 match ban for 'kicking' Fortuna's Rolf Landerl in the face reduced to a 6 match ban.
Tim Cornelisse faces ban for elbow-jab

03 Oct 2001

Ajax's Zlatan Ibrahimovich is not the only one facing a possible ban  - Vitesse's Tim Cornelisse is also facing a match suspension for his elbow-jab on PSV's John de Jong on Saturday.
Stefanovic rejects 8 match ban

02 Oct 2001

Vitesse's Dejan Stefanovic has rejected the KNVB's 8 match ban which the defender received for kicking Fortuna's Rolf Landerl in the face. Coach Ronald Koeman is also sticking by the Yugoslavian player, saying that he doesn't believe that he's guilty as charged!
PSV lose to Vitesse 0 - 2

29 Sept 2001

PSV lineup: Kralj, Faber, Nikiforov, Hofland, Heintze, Rommedahl, John de Jong Vogel, Ramzi, Kezman and Bruggink.

VitesseVan Fessem, Nanu, Stefanovic, Kreek, Tim Cornelisse, Diarra, Janssen, Claessens, Babangida, van Beukering and van der Schaaf.

It must have been a nice surprise for Vitesse to see themselves 0 - 1 up after 10 minutes, thanks to a goal by Gert Claessens, and they will have been even more pleased when Theo Janssen made it 0 - 2 in the 24th. The fact that they go home with the points is down to another poor league performance by PSV while their opponents are rediscovering the will-to-win and motivating themselves to at have a go at winning. It's working - they were clearly the better team and PSV can be grateful that other clear chances their opponents created didn't find their way to the back of the net. PSV seem simply unwilling to exert themselves in the league which is developing into a mental block which is going to get increasingly difficult to break out of. Theo Janssen was man-of-the-match for the Arnhemmers, providing Claessens with theng to put away the 1st goal and following it up by curling in a beautiful freekick for the 2nd goal. Apart from two chances for Arnold Bruggink and Georgi Gakhokidze there was little to show for the champions 'work'. The defeat ends the run of unbeaten home games which started last February 3rd after Feyenoord were the last team to win in Eindhoven. If this succession of defeats and flat performances is truly the price PSV are prepared to pay for more success in the Champions League then it's a heavy price to bear and one must wonder if  the fans are equally happy to pay it - all of a sudden Eric Gerets is looking a worried man. Vitesse on the other hand will be well pleased with their performance and go into top position in the table - but Ajax have two games in hand (both teams are also the only remaining undefeated Ere Divisie sides).

Vitesse board support Koeman

20 Sept 2001

Vitesse's board of directors have expressed their full support for coach Ronald Koeman after the former international threatened to quit the club. He's sick of watching a team that seems either unwilling/incapable of putting on a good performance or at least giving the impression that they are working hard to achieve one. After a frank andtalk with the squad yesterday morning another discussion followed with the board of directors in the evening. Koeman has decided to stay for the time being but only on the condition that there will be some radical changes made.
New operation for Zongo

19 Sept 2001

Mahamadou Zongo has had a 2nd operation to remove a screw which was fitted to his right knee in an earlier piece of surgery which was causing pain and irritation. The striker has been out of action since tearing ligaments in the knee last February in the away match against Twente and will now not be available for the team until after Christmas!
Players support Koeman

19 Sept 2001

The Vitesse squad have expressed their unreserved support for coach Ronald Koeman at the end of a frank discussion between the former Dutch international and the players. Last night's embarassing performance, in which the Arnhemmers exited the Amstel Cup at the hands of Fortuna, and the poor start to the league this season were more than sufficient reason for Koeman to consider quitting the club. He'll be having a meeting tonight with the club's directors in which he'll be seeking their support in making some changes which he feels will be crucial to turning the team's fortunes around. If he doesn't receive their blessing he could still decide to leave the Gelredome!
Koeman threatens to quit Vitesse

19 Sept 2001

Ronald Koeman has threatened to quit his job as Vitesse coach if his squad don't get their act together pronto. The team have made a poor start to this season and the defeat by Fortuna in last night's Amstel Cup 1st Round match plus the sloppy performance against Sparta last Saturday, in which the team threw away the points at the last moment, are an extra slap in the face for the former Dutch international. He's been struggling to get his team back on track since the beginning of the year and is severely disappointed by the performnce of several players and the team as a whole. There will be some serious talking today between Koeman and his players and, although it's too early in the season to call it quits, if he doesn't see some clear improvements a.s.a.p. (especially in the motivation department - Amoah came in for some particularly scathing comments last night) the coach could soon be packing his bags!
Fortuna knock out Vitesse

18 Sept 2001

Fortuna beat Vitesse  2 - 1. Vitesse's exit from the Amstel Cup is a huge disappointment for coach Ronald Koeman and he was forced to watch in despair as his team failed to convert their on-pitch superiority into goals. Bob Peeters and Michel Kreek sat on the bench while Rahamat Mustapha, Remco van der Schaaf and Tim Cornelisse were dropped for this match and Tijjani Babangida was sick. Despite being clearly the better side the Arnhemmers had to wait for a mistake by Ruud Hesp which give Theo Janssen the chance to pounce for their only goal. Marco Heering grabbed an equalizer just before time and substitute Pascal Averdijk got the winner in extra-time.
Vitesse and Sparta in 1 - 1 draw

15 Sept 2001

Vitesse line-up: Van Fessem,Tim Cornelisse, Stefanovic, Kreek, Van Hintum, Van der Schaaf, Janssen, Sikora, Martel, Peeters and Mustapha.

Sparta line-up: Kooiman, Elzinga, van der Meer, Winter, Sier, Bouchiba, Boukhari, Zijm, Nielsen, Inia and Blinker.

This was another of those disappointing 90 minutes of football - Michel Kreekd the score for the Arnhemmers in the 31st and Vitesse looked as if they would be able to safely deposit 3 points in their account but Sparta managed to snatch a point with a Danny Koevermans goal in the 83rd minute. Vitesse remain unbeaten so far this season but that's all that can be said for their performances so far while Sparta repeated their overheated performance of last week against RKC - Nourdin Boukhari, Sieme Zijm, Regi Blinker, Houssin Bezzai and Danny Koevermans all got yellow cards! It's not exactly the kind of 'tactic' we'd expected from former Oranje coach Frank Rijkaard!

Heerenveen drop points to Vitesse 1 - 1

07 Sept 2001

Both teams have got off, on paper at least, to a fine start - no defeats and no goals against them - and they both  want to earn the chance to play European football next season. However, Vitesse had a rough ride last season and their 0 - 0 draw in Limburg against Fortuna during theirng match disappointed. They did better against AZ with a 1 - 0 win. New 'star' Rahamat Mustapha Riga, scorer of that loan goal, had to make way tonight for the back-from-injury Martel and Sikora  while Jimmy van Fessem (bought from Willem II) replaced the departed-for-Feyenoord Edwin Zoetebier in goal and Bob Peeters also had to sit it out on the bench! Heerenveen had only managed a  0 -  0 draw in theirr against newly promoted Den Bosch (not to be underestimated this season by their bigger brothers, they could turn out to be giant-killers yet!) but followed it up with a most convincing 5 - 0 against NAC (with a 'hot duo' performance from Anthony Lurling and Marcus Allbäck). They will be seeking to establish a consistency this time round that deserted them last season after their short-lived Champions League adventure. Daniël Jensen scored ther in the 33rd minute but Heerenveen neglected to build on their advantage despite controlling the game - they were simply off-target tonight. Vitesse had little of their own to bring into the game and former Ajacied Michel Kreek missed a penalty for them in the 82nd. The visitors still managed to sneak away with a point though when Remco van der Schaaf got the equalizer in the 85th after earlier hitting the bar with a header.
Vitesse extend Riga's contract

06 Sept 2001

Rahamat Mustapha Riga has impressed Vitesse sufficiently during recent performances that the Arnhemmers are offering to breakhis existing contract (whch runs out at the end of the season) and extend it. The 19 year-old outside-right made his debut for the club in the 2 - 1 win against De Graafschap on May 16th 1999 but was on loan to RBC during the first half of last season. Only since Viktor Sikora, Carlos Fortes, Didier Martel and Mamadou Zongo all dropped out through injury has he been given a chance to strut his stuff and he has obliged, scoring the only goal in the recent August 22nd win against AZ. He also scored Oranje'sng goal against Angola in the 2 - 0 win saw them reach the quarter finals of the World Cup for Under 20s.
Liverpool buy Kirkland and Dudek

31 Aug 2001

Liverpool have reached a English-record-for-a-goalkeeper  deal with Coventry City's Chris Kirkland in time to register him for the Champions League! The 20 year-old, who is one of the brightest goalkeeping talents in the UK and was already linked to Liverpool, passed his medical for "The Reds" who were in real hurry to meet that C-L deadline! In a surprise move they've also gone through with the deal which brings Jurek Dudek to Anfield - the blood which was rushed to Liverpool from Poland was fine, finally removing that last-doubt-in-their minds. This latest development ends a dramatic day which also had Edwin Zoetebier wondering whether or not he was going to make his move from Vitesse to Feyenoord. Sander Westerveld will not be amused either - the Dutch keeper extended his contract with Liverpoool till 2005 earlier this year, despite a threat by the club to buy Kirkland at the time, but has been under pressure during recent weeks and his recent blunder in the match at Bolton won't have helped his case - his time at "The Reds" is undoubtedly over-and-out!
Dudek delay holds up Zoetebier move

31 Aug 2001

Liverpool's club physician has sent back the results of Jurek Dudek's medical examination in Warsaw, where he's training with the Polish national team, to England for further analysis. Something is worrying him enough, specifically a scan that's been made, to have it checked at the last minute before the transfer of Feyenoord's goalie actually goes through. Speed is of the essence because the keeper has to be registered for the Champions League by 17.00 this afternoon and he also has to obtain a work permit because he's non-EU citizen. The delay is also holding up Edwin Zoetebier's imminent move from Vitesse to Feyenoord - the Rotterdammers will be able to pull out of the deal if Dudek's move to Liverpool falls through!
Dudek Liverpool move off, Zoetebier's too!!

31 Aug 2001

Liverpool have called off the transfer of Feyenoord's Polish goalie Jurek Dudek after a medical report came up with a problem which is sufficient for them to call off the deal! They don't have the time to put the keeper through another medical which leaves three disappointed keepers! Dudek because his wish (to play in England hasn't come true again -  his move to Arsenal also fell through) Edwin Zoetebier (because he won't get to play for Feyenoord) and Sander Westerveld (who was going to be replaced by Dudek at Liverpool and looked set for a departure) - how will he be feeling?.

Zoetebier signs for Feyenoord

30 Aug 2001

Vitesse's Edwin Zoetebier has signed a contract for 4 years with Feyenoord and becomes the successor to Jurek Dudek, who has moved to Liverpool. The former Volendam keeper played for the Rotterdammers as reserve goalie but moved, out of frustration at never becoming no.1 choice in the Kuip, to Arnhem last year. Zoetebier understands well why Feyenoord's 1st choice was NAC's Babos  - the Hungarian is still only 27 compare to the Dutchman's 32 years.
Vitesse beat Utrecht 1 - 0

25 Aug 2001

Vitesse had beaten AZ on Wednesday while Utrecht have booked two defeats so far (against NAC and Sparta) but neiether team will want to be reminded of this evening's bleak spectacle. Utrecht looked to have the upperhand in theng stages but Vitesse recovered and Ajax hired-gun Tijani Babangida looked particularly threatening but he unfortunately lacked finesse in terms of passing and finishing while Mustapha Riga on the left was similarly lacking in the same departments. The 1st half will, unfortunately, be remembered more for a couple of fouls (by Van der Schalf on De Jong and Peeters on Vreven) than for any goal-mouth action that occurred. The 2nd half began promisingly but, after chances for Van den Bergh and Gluscevic, it fizzled out and it took an own goal (an unfortunate header) by Patrick Zwaanswijk in the 79th minute to gift Vitesse 3 points this evening.
Fortuna celebrate holding Vitesse to 0 - 0

19 Aug 2001

Both teams have troubled seasons behind them and Fortuna will be glad to have managed to hold Vitesse to a draw this afternoon. Fortuna had added Jürgen Dirkx, on loan from PSV, to their lineup while the Arnhemmers were missing the injured Louis Laros, Didier Martel and Victor Sikora plus the suspended Nanu and Stefanovic. The match began in a sloppy fashion with lots of bad passing, creating little or no scoring opportunities, there being only a few 'hopeful' shots from a distance to test the goalies at either end. Fortuna's Ronald Hamming had the best chance of the 1st half but wasted it. The 2nd half was pretty much the same, Vitesse trying to create somengs , Fortuna defending with ease. The visitors had hope on the hour when Amoah loomed large in front of goal but his header went straight into Ruud Hesp's body. After that it was English striker Mr.Hamming who had the last real chance to put one away for the home side but carelessness ended any hope of getting 3 points.  Still, not losing was enough cause for a celebration -  last season they lost 19 matches).
Martel and Sikora are back!

15 Aug 2001

Vitesse will no doubt be pleased to see Didier Martel and Victor Sikora back in training - both had been recovering from ankle operations. French striker Martel missed most of his first season with the Arnhemmers (he played only 14 times but scored 5 goals) but should be back in action within 4 weeks while Sikora had been finally operated on for a niggling injury that had been bothering him for some time
Vitesse lose friendly to Sunderland 1 - 2

09 Aug 2001

Vitesse lost their last serious friendly before the new season kicks-off with a 1 - 2 defeat by Sunderland. Craddock got ther in the 16th and Kilbane added a 2nd only 5 minutes later as the English side outclassed the Arnhemmers. Bob Peeters got one back and Matthew Amoah came close to equalizing but saw his effort saved by substitute Jurgen Macho.
Viktor Sikora operation successful

02 Aug 2001

Viktor Sikora's operation to remove bone splinters in his right ankle has been successful. He's been in pain since picking up the injury in the UEFA Cup match against which they lost 4 - 1 to RC Lens on October 28th 1999.
Vitesse lend Michael Samuel to Telstar

02 Aug 2001

Vitesse are lending Michael Samuel to Stormvogels-Telstar Combinatie for next season in the hope that the 21 year-old left-half will gain valuable matchplay experience with the First Division side.
Viktor Sikora out of action for a month

26 July 2001

Vitesse will have to miss Viktor Sikora for a month because he has to have a small operation on his right ankle. There's a small piece of bone which has come loose and needs removing  - it's an injury which has been niggling him since he picked it up during a UEFA Cup match against Racing Club de Lens two seasons ago.
Babangida on loan to Vitesse

19 July 2001

Ajax are lending Tijjani Babangida to Vitesse next season, the Arnhemmers can't afford to buy him at present but that could change if he performs well. The 27 year-old right-winger played 77 matches in the Ajax strip and scored 20 goals for them but is currently surplus to the Amsterdammers' needs. Last season he was lent to Turkish side Genglerbigli where he scored twice in 12 matches.
Vitesse get KNVB licence

18 July 2001

Vitesse have finally been granted their licence to play football next season from the Dutch FA (KNVB). They had been working with a temporary one while they sorted out their financial problems and balanced their books. Coach Ronald Koeman is happy that all the money troubles are now behind them and the club can get back to what it's all about - football!!
More financial help for Vitesse

18 July 2001

After an earlier financial 'bailing out' by the so-called "Vrienden van Vitesse" (Friends of Vitesse), three members of Vitesse's board of directors, Cor Guijt, Jan Snellenburg and Herman Veenendaal, have again stuck out a helping hand and taken over all remaining debts owed to Gelreparc BV. This includes all the money still owed to former sponsor NUON, in total €34.03 million Euros.
Vitesse's Theo Janssen extends contract

18 July 2001

Youth international Theo Janssen has extended, and improved, his contract with Vitesse for another two years (his current deal runs out in 2004). The 19 year-old joined the club in 1998 (scoring one goal in 52 appearances) and has played for the Dutch Under 19s as well as being selected twice by Louis van Gaal for Oranje.
Victor Sikora has ankle injury

12 July 2001

Vitesse's Victor Sikora has picked up an ankle injury in training but will only be out of action for a few days. Trainer Ronald Koeman has also added Theo Groeneveld and Rahamat Mustapha to the squad. Mustapha has been on loan to RBC last season and impressed Louis van Gaal during the Dutch Under 19s recent matches at the World Cup in Argentina. Groeneveld has been playing for the A1 juniors and Vitesse's reserve team.
Vitesse balance the books

04 July 2001

At the last minute a group formed to help the Arnhemmers out of their financial problems, "The Friends of Vitesse", have been able to inject €9.08 million Euros into the club -allowing the Dutch FA (KNVB) to offer them a licence for next season. The largest part of the money comes from three men already closely involved in the running of the club - Jan Snellenburg, Cor Guijt and Herman Veenendaal. It means that Vitesse can pay off a considerable sum they've built up in past debts and this, combined with the fact that they'll be paying €2.72 million Euros less rent for the Gelredome stadium next year, has closed the finacial gap they still had in their budget.
Vitesse still in financial problems

30 June 2001

Vitesse are still trying desperately to balance their books in order to get their licence from the Dutch FA (KNVB) for next season. They had a budget of €22.69 million Euros last season which will be at least €4.54 million less for the coming season and are currently still €3.18 -  €3.63 million Euros short. The closing date for the presentation to the KNVB of the new budget is July 1st (a deadline they can't meet) and chairman Jos Vaessen will be meeting the Dutch FA this coming week to talk over the club's problem. If they could only sell Victor Sikora their problem would be solved, unfortunately there is no buyer for the striker at the moment or for any of the other players on the for-sale list - Orlando Trustfull, Marian Zeman and Dragoslav Jevric.
Jimmy van Fessem signs for Vitesse

05 June 2001

Willem II's reserve goalie Jimmy van Fessem has signed a contract for 3 years with Vitesse. The Belgian keeper Gert de Vlieger has taken over the no.1 spot with the Tricolores and Jimmy has spent too much time, for his liking, on the bench. In Arnhem he replaces the departing (not gone yet but it won't be long) Dragoslav Jevric (off to Besiktas) and will have to compete against Edwin Zoetebier for the regular place (not an easy task).
Vitesse's Theo Janssen gets Oranje callup

02 June 2001

Theo Janssen, Vitesse's 19 year-old midfielder who played for the Dutch under 21s against Estland yesterday evening , has been called up by Louis van Gaal for tonight's World Cup qualifier against Estland. He's going to fill in the midfield slot left empty by the absence of the 'banned' Edgar Davids and the injured Mark van Bommel.
Vitesse still fighting back

01 June 2001

After all the commotion at the Gelredome during this season (see the ' Van Hooijdonk story' and the 'Aalbers affair') Vitesse are still sorting out their finances as they await their license for next season. Their books don't balance yet (projected earnings for next season from sponsoring, ticket sales and tv-rights are €18.5 million Euros while expenditures are between €20.42 and €21,78 million) and it will be another 2 years before they do, according to chairman Jos Vaessen. At the moment, he says, they are trying to persuade 'temporary sponsor' Atag to sign a longer term contract and  the club expect to boost their earnings via new sponsors, increased season ticket sales to be able to pay off all debts and start to show a healthy profit. The fact that they've missed out on European football next season is also a bit of a blow but UEFA Cup football brings in relatively little compared to getting into the Champions League. Their rent for use of the Gelredome costs between €4.08 million and €4.54 million Euros per year, making it the most expensive bill to be paid after players' wages. There was talk of Victor Sikora going to another club but, although they could do with the money, Vitesse needs its good players as much as anyone else and would much rather the talented striker remains where he is. The Aalbers affair has taken up too much of the club's time and energy this last season and the former supremo is currently making a come back after weeks of silence and is fighting to repair his damaged reputation. I think we'll be hearing more from both sides during the summer and the coming season.
