| PSV
beat Galatasaray in style 3 - 1 |

| PSV
played against the Turkish side in Vitesse's Gelredome in Arnhem due
to the pitch invasion last March when they went out of the tournament to
Kaiserslautern. UEFA 'punished' this by forcing the champions
to play their first C-L home match of this season at least 100 km from
Eindhoven. Coach Erik Gerets was looking, and sounding, confident before
the game that the players had rediscovered their spirit, after the
disappointment of their 4 - 1 defeat by Nantes last 'Black Tueday'. They
were denied a goal within 3 minutes of the kickoff when Kezman was called
offside - a real disputable decision. In the 12th Rommedahl broke free
down the right but his cross was hit way over the bar by Bruggink - a nice
classic move though. Two minutes later Eric Addo got his head to a Van
Bommel freeekick but it bounced over. After a brief exhibition of ball
control and passing technique a move was built up from the back which
Bruggink confidently put away for the 1 - 0 in the 38th. It was a fine 1st
half performance by the champions. They
had a rather shaky start to the 2nd half, so it was rather 'out of the blue'
when Ernest Faber headed in PSV's 2nd from a freekick in the 52nd. It
heralded a strong spell for the champions as they pressed home their
advantage with a series of attacking moves - Kezman was slowly getting
into the match after working hard for little return in the 1st half. Ümit
Karan headed wide for Galatasaray in the 60th but then it was Rommedahl's turn
to blast one in from the edge of the area in the 65th but the goalie deal
with it well. Equally 'out of the
blue' came the Turkish goal, as PSV were caught out at the back,
Ümit Karan putting it away as Galatasaray began to press forward and show
more aggression. Addo and Faber started to buckle at the back and Van
Bommel and Vogel dropped back to help out which gave their opponents
the chance to push forward even more. Hasan blasted a shot at goal for the Turks but
Waterreus's reflexes were sharp tonight, especially for a man who goes
into hospital tomorrow! Vennegoor of Hesselink came on
for Bruggink in the 75th - a sign that PSV weren't planning to stop the
attacks just yet. As the tension mounted toward the final whistle it was
Waterreus who put in every ounce of effort to keep out the Galatasaray
assaults. In the 78th minute Lucius came on for Rommedahl, who'd put in a
good night's work, and it proved an inspired substitution. John de Jong
replaced Adil Ramzi for the last 5 minutes and then, in injury time, Lucius
broke through to give Kezman the ball and make it 3 - 1. A well deserved
win and a welcome change of fortunes for the champions.
