| Holland
beat Estonia 5 - 0 |
05 Sept 2001
|
| Holland
showed they are at least still able to beat the likes of Estonia (even
with the hangover of Saturday's defeat in Ireland in their heads and
hearts) with five
goals in the 1st half - Zendend the score in the 16th minute, Van Bommel got his
first in the 26th and a second in the 39th, Cocu scored in the 31st and
Van Nistelrooy in the 44th. The first half showed that, given the space
that a team like Estonia will always give them, Holland are still able to
put on a reasonable display of what they are capable of. Once Van (The Man) Nistelrooy and Overmars were
substituted for the 2nd half things began to fall apart again - again
there was the strange sight of the Premier League's top scorer Hasselbaink
on the right - what's the point, is this really an example of an
intelligent tactical substitution??? I don't care how good he was as a
winger when he was a youngster or in practice! The result was a far less
entertaining 45 minutes than before the break as
Oranje failed to impress/lost interest/looked tired - there was little
left to fight for and little to applaud. Meanwhile ,Portugal had won
3 - 1 on Cyprus and so the Dutch are really, truly out of the World Cup!
