saved by Maastricht council |
02 July 2002
|
| MVV
is safe - at least for the duration of next season! Maastricht municipal
council have decided to subsidise the ailing Eerste Divisie club to the
tune of 450,000 Euros after receiving the news MVV is to be getting a
new professional licence from the Dutch FA (KNVB) for next season. The
council have helped out the town's football club before and the fact that
they've just received the last repayment on the earlier loan was the
deciding factor in persuading them to continue to help out.

27 May 2002
|
| MVV are
being pressurized into sacking their director of football, Ron
Weyzen, according to a report in Dutch provincial newspaper "Dagblad
De Limburger". Weyzen is being held responsible for the lack of
sporting success as well as the financial malaise at the Eerste Divisie
side. Maastricht council and a group of new sponsors want to see him
replaced before pumping money into the club. MVV narrowly escaped
bankruptcy last season and are currently negotiating with the municipal
council for a subsidy of 450,000 Euros.

| MVV is
to let Godfrey Nwankpa go! The 23 year-old defender has been on loan from
Heerenveen, who signed him last summer with high expectations, for much of
this season but has failed to impress in either Friesland or Limburg.
After the winter break he lost his place in the Eerste Divisie club's
lineup to Suat Usta and has only made 13 appearances for them.

MVV
lose to Emmen 2-3
The match started with MVV fans occupying the visitors stand as a
gesture of
solidarity with their opponents as both clubs are currently in a financially weak
situation. Although the score may seem to reflect a close game it was the
visitors who dominated the match. Wasiu Taiwod the score halfway
through the 1st half with his 15th goal of the season. Although Yurtcan
Kayis managed to pull one back in the 40th minute of the game MVV found
themselves trailing 1-3 at half time after Junqueira scored in the 43rd
and Marinus Dijkhuizen in the 44th.
The 2nd half was a mere formality and, although Emmen remained the better
of the 2 sides, it was MVV who scored the last goal of the evening, a close
range nodder from John Mutsaers.

Veendam lose to MVV
2-3.
MVV nearly went into the lead in the 10th minute but Davey Heyman's
free-kick was miraculously saved by Veendam's goalie, Peter van der Vlag.
A few minutes later Van der Vlag did well in saving a hard shot by Wasiu
Taiwo. In the 30th minute John Mutsaersd the score after heading in
a 40 meter cross. 4 minutes later Max Houttuin levelled the score with a beautiful
25 meter shot. In the 77th minute of the game Uriel Trustfull made it 1-2,
rounding off a rush down the right flank with a mis-kicked cross that
somehow landed in the back of the net. 3 minutes later Wasiu Taiwo
slammed in his 14th goal of the season from close range. 5 minutes before
the final whistle Eerste Divisie top scorer Ivan Tzvetkov made the score
look more respectable for the home side, netting from close range after a scrimmage
in front of goal.

RBC, who had managed to climb into 2nd position and were also in
the running for the 4th period title, came back down to earth last night
after losing 2-0 to lowly MVV. The home side were slightly better
than the visitors in the goalless 1st half but were unable to
penetrate MVV's defense. With just 12 minutes remaining
on the clock in the 2nd half, Mutsaers mad a sol-run through the entire
RBC defense, passing the ball to MVV's top scorer Wasiu Taiwo who netted from close range. In the 90th minute MVV's Davey Heymans rounded off a Taiwo
cross with an incredible 30 meter shot.

Den Haag gained another 3 valuable points in their quest for

they were unable to penetrate MVV's defense. Just before the break MVV
were reduced to 10 men when Harvey Wijngaarde was sent off for poking his
finger in his opponent's eye. It took until
the 71st minute before MVV were able to take advantage of the man extra
situation when Michael van der Heiden scored the one and only goal of the

agreed on Wednesday to try it on their own. It's now a question of exactly
how interested sponsors will be to support the club!? If they are, it will
give them more bargaining power in any further merger negotiations.

are in negotiations with an American businessman Tim Krause who is interested in
investing millions of Euros in the ailing Eerste Divisie side (the Maastricht club were bailed out to the tune of 900,000 Euros by the
municipal council in December). The multi-millionaire, who already
owns a football club 'Milwaukee Wave', will use his consortium 'Wisconsin
Sports Management' to inject money, if the deal goes through, which
will be used to revitalise the
club as well as the stadium while a complete takeover is also a possibility!
In return he wants MVV players to travel to the United States to play some
matches in the summer months. He's currently looking around to buy up
European clubs who are in a weak financial and footballing position which
he will use to encourage the growing interest in football among American
youngsters.

| The
Dutch FA (KNVB) have decided to take away MVV's professional licence -
they find the club unable to show that it can continue to fulfill its
financial obligations. The Maastrichtenaars have been struggling for some
time now to come up with a viable financial plan which would enable them
to go on in the Eerste Divisie. They have one last chance via an appeal to
prove they have the resources need to continue - they're currently
awaiting a bank guarantee from the municipal council which should close
the gap in their book-keeping. It's the first time in the history of Dutch
professional that a club has had its licence withdrawn during
the season! What the consequences will be for the remaining 17 Eerste
Divisie clubs remains a subject of speculation.
