| Van
Gastel to sign for Serie side Como? |
13 July 2002
|
|
Jean-Paul Gastel could well be playing in the
Serie A for the coming two seasons after newly promoted Como offered him a
contract. Como have made spectacular progress during recent years, gaining
promotion in 3 seasons from the Serie C to the serie A. The former
Feyenoorder had only just started a two and a half year contract at Serie
C side Ternana but will be flying out to Italy today for a medical. 'This
is a dream come true for me because the situation at Terrana was not ideal,
I wasn't playing as many matches as I wanted and I'd also been told they
didn't need me for next season.'

| Wooter
set for AA Gent move? |
08 July 2002
|
|
Nordin Wooter is currently being targeted by
Belgian side AA Gent. Trainer Jan Olde Riekerink knows Wooter from his
time at Ajax where the 25 year-old made his professional debut in the
1994/1995 season. After an unsuccessful spell with Real Zaragoza he moved
to play for English side Watford in 1999 but has been denied an extension
of his deal there. He was in the stands to watch Gent beat their Irish
Intertoto opponents 2-0 on Saturday and confirmed the Belgians' interest
in him, saying he'd be discussing terms in the course of this week.

| Boateng
set to leave Villa |
07 July 2002
|
|
George Boateng looks to be reaching the end of
his time with Aston Villa after manager Graham Taylor announced that,
after holding talks with the Dutch midfielder, the club had decided to let
him go if a club makes a sensible offer. Taylor said, "I've had a
long chat with George and once again he's made clear his desire to leave
Villa for a new challenge. I will not be standing in his way." As yet
there are no concrete offers for the former Feyenoorder.

| Davids
to stay with Juventus |
06 July 2002
|
| Juventus
are holding on to Dutch international Edgar Davids and the midfielder will
definitely not be making the move to AS Roma as has been reported in the
Italian press. "We need Davids for the coming season and have no
reason to sell him" said the Italian champions' general director
Luciano Mogg. According to the stories which have been circulating Davids
had already agreed terms and signed a deal for 4 years while Juventus
would receive striker Marco Delvecchio in part exchange.
|
| Stam
wants to stay with Lazio |
04 July 2002
|
| Jaap
Stam has told Lazio's chairman Sergio Cragnotti that he wants to stay at
least another year with the club. The 29 year-old central-defender has
been linked in recent weeks with a move to Leeds United, AC Milan or Real
Madrid but he is uninterested in leaving Rome. The Dutch international
joined Lazio from Manchester United in the summer of 2001 after a conflict
with Sir Alex Ferguson.

| Van
der Heide and Mannheim part |
04 July 2002
|
| Sandor
van der Heide is to leave German side Waldhof Mannheim after a failing in
a second attempt to settle in at the club. He'd returned home on loan to
Cambuur Leuuwarden after suffering an initial bout of 'home-sickness' but,
on travelling back to Germany, was equally unsuccessful in his second
attempt to feel at home in Maanheim. The 24 year-old forward had signed a
contract for two years but will now be playing for his old amateur club
ONS Sneek.

| Van
der Gouw signs for West Ham United |
28 Jun 2002
|
| Raimond
van der Gouw is moving from Manchester United to play for West Ham United.
The 39 year-old keeper will be the London club's reserve keeper,
backing-up "The Hammers" 1st choice David James. Van der Gouw
had been linked with a move to First Division Coventry City but received a
better offer from West Ham and the chance to continue in the Premiership
instead of turning out in Division One was also an important factor.
|
| Davids
poised for move to AS Roma |
28 Jun 2002
|
| According
to AS Roma's president Franco Sensi, Dutch international Edgar Davids is
poised to move from Juventus to join his club. The midfielder had already
agreed terms some weeks ago, much to the annoyance of Juventus' manager
Luciano Moggi, in a deal which should see Francisco Lima move in the
opposite direction. Davids' future at Juve has been subject to speculation
ever since he fell out with coach Marcello Lipi in December when he was
dropped from the starting lineup for a Champions League match in favour of
Igor Tudor. |
| Mulder
talks to Norwegian clubs |
27 Jun 2002
|
| Youri
Mulder is reported to be talking with two Norwegian clubs about the
possibility of a move to Scandinavia after unsuccessfully trying to get a
deal with his old club Twente or one with Groningen. The striker, who left
Bundesliga side Schalke 04 transfer-free earlier this year, is trying to
negotiate a deal with Lillestrøm SK and Moss FK, the nos.10 and 12 in the
Norwegian Tippeligaen league. It's unknown how serious the talks are but,
if a deal goes through, the 33 year-old would be able to start playing
straight away as the Norwegian season runs till the end of December.

| Bonfrère
new coach Egyptian side Al-Ahli |
27 Jun 2002
|
| Jo
Bonfrère is the new coach for the coming two seasons at Egyptian side
Al-Ahli. The Dutch trainer, who was fired earlier this year at United Arab
Emirate side Al-Wehda, has been chosen in preference to his fellow
countryman Arie Haan. Bonfrère's task is to deliver some prizes next
season after a disappointing one for the Cairo-based club. It's not his
first 'African adventure' as he looked after the Nigerian national team,
on and off, for 6 years until he was fired in the autumn of 2000.

| Hiddink's
Korea beat Spain! |
21 Jun 2002
|
| Guus
Hiddink has acquired the status of a demi-god in South Korea after the
national team beat Spain to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup today.
The stadium where the match took place is to be renamed the Guus Hiddink
stadium in honour of the Dutch coach who has transformed the South Korean
team into giant-killers! Italy have gone home and now Spain have been sent
packing after a penalty shoot-out where the Spaniards' best player
Joaquín was the only one to miss a penalty! Hiddink is speechless after
the latest victory but still has a few good things to say about the
unbelievable mental resilience of his team who have refused to be
dominated by supposedly far superior teams. The legend lives on!!

| Kiki
Musampa to join Deportivo? |
20 Jun 2002
|
| Former Ajax
star Kiki Musampa is said to be interested in swapping his current club
Malaga for Deportivo la Coruna. Deportivo's president Augusto Lendoiro is
very keen on signing him and has put up €2.5 million Euros plus two
players (said to be Flores and Emerson) against Malaga's asking price of
€3 million Euros. Musampa's deal runs out next year and Malaga would
prefer to sell him before he becomes transfer-free. He was the club's
first big signing in 1999, after he'd spent some time with Ajax and then
Bordeaux, but failed to live up to expectations. In fact he got himself
into a lot of trouble with his 'wild' lifestyle and was even accused
of attacking a woman who scratched his car after Malaga's 3-2 defeat by
Numancia in the 2000/2001 season. Things improved last term with him
putting away 9 goals in 32 matches.

| Guus
Hiddink's South Korea beat Italy! |
18 Jun 2002
|
| Dutch
coach Guus Hiddink's South Korea have beaten the Italians 2-1 with a
golden goal in extra time, ironically scored by Jung-Hwan Ahn who plays
for lowly Italian Peruggia. Italy seemed to have the match under control
with their tactically/technically superior but rather cynical style and
went ahead when Vieri headed in ther in the 18th minute. It looked
as if the Koreans didn't have enough heart to win today until they got a
late equalizer by Ki Hyeon Seol in the 88th to put the match into
extra-time. In a perhaps harsh decision Francesco Totti was sent off for
receiving his 2nd yellow card in the 103rd minute reducing Italy to ten
men. Ahn's Golden Goal came in the 117th minute to give the
tournament's 'dream team' a place in the quarter-final against Spain on Saturday.

| Arie
Haan denies taking over at Al Ahli |
18 Jun 2002
|
| Arie
Haan has denied yesterday's reports that he'd agreed to become Egyptian
side Al Ahli's new trainer. The 53 year-old former
Feyenoord coach was supposedly the successor to Portugese
coach Manuel Jose who was sacked after the team lost the championship
title to rivals Ismailia.
|
| Arie
Haan new Al Ahli coach |
17 Jun 2002
|
| Arie
Haan has accepted the offer to take over as the new trainer at Egyptian
club Al Ahli, the current Champion of Africa. The 53 year-old
still has to fill in the details of the deal and, as yet, no statement has
been made concerning the length of the contract. Up till August 2001
former Feyenoord coach was technical director, and later trainer, at
Austria Wien. Prior to that he'd looked after PAOK Saloniki, VfB
Stuttgart, FC Nürnberg, Standard Luik, Anderlecht, Paniliakos and, if
only very briefly, Omonia Nicosia on Cyprus. He only lasted two weeks
there before moving to Austria. Al Ahli won the African Champions League
for the first time in 14 years in December with victory against South
African side Mamelodi Sundowns. Haan
succeeds Portugese coach Manuel Jose who was sacked after the team lost
the championship title to rivals Ismailia.

| Frank
de Boer extends stay at Barça |
15 Jun 2002
|
| Frank
de Boer has finally put pen to paper and signed an extension on his
contract with Barcelona for another year. There had been a lot of
speculation that he might leave Camp Nou if he didn't get a new deal for
at least 2 years but the Dutch international is claiming that it was
always his intention to stay with Barça. De Boer is quoted as saying,
"After taking so long to reach agreement it's a bit of a relief and,
despite reports to the contrary, we're more than happy here." It'll
be his 5th season with the club and he's looking forward to making up for
a poor 2001/2002 season with a renewed effort to claim some prizes under
former Oranje boss Louis van Gaal.

| Arie
Haan to coach Egyptian club? |
10 Jun 2002
|
| Former
Anderlecht and Feyenoord coach Arie Haan is reportedly close to signing a
deal with top Egyptian side Al-Ahly. The Cairo club sacked Portugese
trainer Manuel da Silva last week after the team lost the championship to
arch rivals Al-Ismaili, despite the fact that he'd also helped them to win
both the African Champions League and the Super Cup. In Egyptian newspaper
"Al-Gomhouria" Hassan Hamdi, one of the club's managers, said
"We need to work our way back to the unassailable position we had in
this country and Arie Haan is definitely a man who could lead us back to
the absolute top of Egyptian football.' Arie Haan's last job was at Austria
Wien in, surprise, surprise, Austria where he was sacked last season.

| West
Ham want Raimond van der Gouw |
07 Jun 2002
|
| West
Ham United has made a bid for former Go Ahead Eagles, Vitesse and
Manchester United keeper Raimond van der Gouw. The 39 year-old is
transfer-free and looking for a new club. West Ham's manager Glenn Roeder
wants him to be the team's new reserve keeper behind 1st choice David
James. "The Hammers" current backup Shaka Hislop has refused to
extend his contract with the club.

| Menno
Willems leaves Grimsby |
07 Jun 2002
|
| Menno
Willems has left Grimsby Town after 18 disappointing months, his public
criticism of the club's lack of ambition have led to the club's decision
to terminate his deal. The former Vitesse player joined "The Marines"
in November 2000 when, he says, Grimsby were overflowing with ambition.
"They were planning to build a new stadium and buy some new players
but it's all come to nothing. The new board of directors are members of
the old guard, conservative and with little feeling for the sport. Besides
which they don't want to take any financial risks due to the club's
financial situation". Willems is happy in England and had expected
more of his adventure with Grimsby but hopes to find another club soon.

| De
Zeeuw signs for Portsmouth |
07 Jun 2002
|
| Arjan
de Zeeuw will be turning out for English side Portsmouth next season after
signing a contract for 3 years. The Dutch defender played for Second
Division side Wigan Athletic during the last 3 years but now makes a
transfer-free move to Fratton Park. Manager Harry Redknapp is more than
pleased with his new acquisition, "Arjan is a big lad, an excellent
defender and will be good in organising our defence. He's had a taste of
playing at the top in England and with our team has a chance to repeat the
experience". De Zeeuw, who began his career with Telstar, had a taste
of the FA Premiership with Barnsley.

| Hiddink
hero in Korea after WC win |
05 Jun 2002
|
| The
South Korean team under the leadership of former Oranje coach Guus Hiddink
has won its first ever World Cup match with an impressive 2-0 against
Poland. Hiddink is over the moon with the result, dead tired but a happy,
happy man and a hero for life in South Korea itself! "Weeks ago I
said that the team would give their all for their country and today they
played at a level equal to a top European club. I'm proud of them! The
Dutch coach is looking forward to their next match which is against the
United States. "Of course it's been an historic victory but we don't
really have time to celebrate and must get on with the preparations
for the match. His prediction of the outcome? "We've got 5 days to
get ready but we'll beat them of course!"

| Clarence
Seedorf swaps Inter for AC Milan |
31 May 2002
|
|
Clarence Seedorf is moving across
town from Inter Milan to AC Milan as part of a swap between the two Serie
A clubs. Italian international Francesco Coco, who was on loan to
Barcelona, will be going in the opposite direction. Coco was unwilling to
return to AC Milan but is happy with his move to their rivals. The former
Ajax player has been with Internazionale since the end of 1999 but has
never been sure of retaining his place in the starting lineup. Earlier
this year he was targeted by Spanish side RCD Espanyol but the interest
did not result in a bid for the Oranje international.

| Van
Gaal persuades De Boer to stay |
25 May 2002
|
| Frank
de Boer is staying with Barcelona despite the fact he's only been offered
an extension for another year. The 32 year-old defender has been with the
Catalan club since January 1999 and was originally only willing to stay if
he got an extension for at least two years. However, a chat with Louis van
Gaal has convinced the Dutch international enough to risk another season
at Camp Nou with the prospect of another one-year extension if he does
well this coming season.

| Kluivert
out for 2 weeks with knee injury |
24 May 2002
|
| Patrick
Kluivert is out of action for the next two weeks due to a persistent knee
problem. The Oranje striker will miss Barcelona's coming friendly against
Thailand (who recently lost to PSV) but will, nonetheless, travel with the
team to Bangkok. Barça-doctor Ricard Pruna has revealed that Kluivert has
been troubled by the painful injury for some time but had been adamant in
his desire to play out the crucial last few matches of the season.
|
| Van
Gaal gives Kluivert guarantee |
22 May 2002
|
| After
speculation that Louis van Gaal was planning to sell Patrick Kluivert and
Brazilian forward Rivaldo in order to raise money to buy new players the
former Oranje boss has told the Dutch striker that he's guaranteed a place
in the Barcelona team. Rivaldo will also be staying and will play on the
left wing where Van Gaal feels he'll be most effective while
Kluivert will be fielded as centre-forward with Saviola backing him up.
Van Gaal still expects to add a couple of new players with character and
'attitude' such as Luis Enrique and Carles Puyol. It's still rumoured that
Mark van Bommel remains top of his list of potential additions to the
squad.

Sneekes has left English side Hull City. The 33 year-old former Ajax,
Volendam and Fortuna player arrived in England in 1994 where he played for

Division side since November last year and had a contract till the summer
of 2003.

Gaal & Jonker
installed as Camp Nou |
17 May 2002
|
| Andries
Jonker has been confirmed as Louis van Gaal's assistant at Barcelona
during the former Oranje coach's official presentation today. The former
Volendam trainer is currently engaged in working on the Dutch FA's (KNVB)
so-called 'Masterplan'. It puts an end to the stories that have been
circulating indicating that former Ajax coach Co Adriaanse was joining Van
Gaal at Camp Nou. Van Gaal hmself has called for the fans and press to get
behnid him in his attempt to get the team back on track. Van Gaal is
keeping quite about any potential new players he wants for the squad
saying, "I'm going to talk to
Carlos Rexach about the last two years at the
club before signing any new players". The
former Ajax and Oranje coach was in charge at Camp Nou between 1997 and
2000. Under his leadership Barça won two Championship titles and one Copa
del Rey (Spanish Cup) before he resigned out of solidarity with chairman
José Luis Nunez.

Utrecht. In his younger days he played for Sparta, Dordrecht and
Telstar.

| Marc
Overmars needs knee operation |
16 May 2002
|
| Marc
Overmars wil be undergoing an operation to correct a problem with his
right knee. The Barcelona left-winger has been back in Holland for a
medical examination which has indicated that the operation is essential.
The 29 year-old Oranje international has had a mediocre season, has only
played in 20 La Liga matches, and only played out the full 90 minutes in 6
of those! It's expected he'll be fit in time for the start of next season.
|
| Jonker
to be Van Gaal's assistant? |
16 May 2002
|
| Contrary
to earlier reports that former Ajax coach Co Adriaanse was heading for
Barcelona to be Louis van Gaal's assistant it now looks as if
Andries Jonker could be the candidate to become the former Oranje coach's
assistant. The former Volendam trainer has been working on the KNVB's
(Dutch FA) so-called "Masterplan", which he developed together
with Van Gaal. Van Gaal himself has already stated that he knows nothing
about the Adriaanse story but, in any case, we will know for sure tomorrow
when the new Camp Nou team is presented. |

Feyenoord.

| Hasselbaink
has calf operation |
14 May 2002
|
| Chelsea
striker Jerrell Hasselbaink has had an operation to deal with a nagging
calf injury that been bothering the Dutch international for several weeks
and meant he missed the closing match of the season against Aston Villa
last Saturday. He'll be out of action for 4 weeks but should be fit in
time to kickoff the start of the preparations for the new Premiership
season in July.
|
| Stefan
Postma signs for Aston Villa |
14 May 2002
|
| De
Graafschap's Stefan Postma has signed a 4-year contract with English
Premiership side Aston Villa. The 25 year-old keeper has been targeted by
the West Midlands side for some time. It's not known exactly how much
money Villa have paid to buy off the goalie's contract, which runs till
the summer of 2004. Postma began his career with amateurs Elinkwijk,
making his Ere Divisie debut in 1995 for Utrecht. The former Dutch Under
21 keeper arrived at De Graafschap in 2000, after only playing 33 matches
in 5 years with the Domstad side, and will compete with Peter Enckelman
for the vacant No.1 shirt left by the departed Peter Schmeichel at Villa
Park.
|
| Van
Gaal wants Seedorf |
14 May 2002
|
| Van
Gaal has asked the Barcelona board to let him bring Clarence Seedorf to
Camp Nou. The Inter Milan and Oranje midfielder was teamed up with Van
Gaal at Ajax and has had an impressive 2nd half of this season in Milan,
generating interest from several European clubs.
|
| Van
Gaal back in Barça/Adriaanse assistant |
13 May 2002
|
| Barcelona
have announced that Louis van Gaal is to return to the Camp Nou club,
hardly a surprise after the stories which have been circulating recently
linking him with a return. Something that will raise an eyebrow or
two is the news that former Ajax coach Co Adriaanse is to be his
assistant! There's been considerable resistance to Van Gaal's return from
certain members of the board, as well as the fans, but chairman Joan
Gaspart has persuaded the doubtful that the club's best chance of a
revival is to take back the former Oranje coach. Barça have failed to win
any trophies under their current coach Carles Rexach and were knocked out
of the Champions League by archrivals Real Madrid, only just managing to
earn themselves a C-L ticket for next season! Van Gaal had considerably
more success as trainer between 1997 and 2000, when the club won the La
Liga title twice and the Spanish Cup once. In 2000 he resigned out of
solidarity with chairman José Luis Nunez, the man who'd brought him to
Camp Nou in 1997. After EURO 2000, when Frank Rijkaard resigned, he became
Holland's national coach but failed to repeat with Oranje his successes at
club level with Ajax and Barça. The Dutch failed to qualify for this
year's World Cup which led to his resignation. |
| Boateng
wants to leave Villa! |
13 May 2002
|
| George
Boateng has announced that he wants to leave Aston Villa after 3 years
with the English Premiership side. The 26 year-old midfielder has been
explaining that, although he's given everything he's got during every
single match he's played for the West Midlands side, he's starting to lose
the necessary motivation to play for them and has urgently requested to be
put on the transfer list! Boateng has been with the club since 1999,
playing 103 matches for "The Villains".
|
| Groningen
to sign Youri Mulder? |
13 May 2002
|
| Groningen
are negotiating the signing of Schalke 04's 33 year-old veteran striker
Youri Mulder. Mulder has been plagued by a recurrent knee injury in recent
years and has struggled to get in much matchplay. He's now ready to come
back to Holland after 9 years with the Bundesliga club and the Oosterpark
side are heading up the queue of Dutch clubs wanting to snap him up on a
transfer-free deal!
|
| Van
Gaal tells Barça get rid of Kluivert! |
10 May 2002
|
| Patrick
Kluivert is mystified by reports that former Oranje boss Louis van Gaal
has made the sale of the Dutch international one of his preconditions for
his return to the club. The former Oranje boss is said to have agreed a
contract for two years worth a staggering €8.26 million Euros! Van Gaal
is apparently demanding that a clearout of players (possibly including
Rivaldo, Kluivert, Sergi, Abelardo, Richard Dutruel and Alfonso) is
necessary for him to rebuild the squad at Camp Nou, and the club's top
scorer has been marked as someone who'll be going! Kluivert has been
linked with a move to another club every season since moving to Spain in
1998, despite the fact he's put away 65 goals in 4 seasons. It's also only
a few months ago that he signed a new contract with the Catalan side after
difficult and prolonged negotiations! Still, stranger things have been
known to happen in the topsy turvy world of football and it's not unusual
for such deals to be made only to see a player depart for another club at
the drop of a hat (or whim of a new coach). This particular story may well
have something to do with the politics involved in Van Gaal's resignation
as Oranje coach. A group of star players in the Dutch national team placed
some of the blame for Oranje's failure to qualify for the World Cup on the
coach while Van Gaal was clearly disappointed in the lack of motivation he
detected in many of the squad members. Back at Camp Nou, Rivaldo's
contract runs out in 2003 and Barça will clearly be wanting to get some
money back for the Brazilian before he's able to leave transfer-free! In
the light of the fact that Van Gaal is said to be targeting such names as
Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy and Sebastian Veron, together with
Chelsea's Jerrell Hasselbaink, he's obviously going to need a hell of a
lot of money before he can go shopping! Whether or not any of this is
true, it would seem unlikely that either Van Nistelrooy (who's been making
history with the "Red Devils", Hasselbaink (who recently said he
wants to play out his career at Stamford Bridge) or their respective clubs
would be interested in doing business!!
|
| Van
Nistelrooy top of Van Gaal's want list |
09 May 2002
|
| Trainer
Louis van Gaal, who could be reunited with Barcelona next season, has
stated that he would love to sign Manchester United striker Ruud van
Nistelrooy and has put him on the top of his wanted list. The Dutch coach
is even prepared to do a deal which could involve Dutch international
Patrick Kluivert and Brazilian star Rivaldo being exchanged for United's
top scorer. |
| Overmars
to undergo knee surgery |
09 May 2002
|
|
Marc Overmars has decided to undergo surgery on
his right knee during the summer recess. The Barcelona winger has been
having problems with his knee for the past 4 to 5 months and believes that
surgery is the only option leftfor him. Overmars wants to wait until
after Barcelona's last match of the season against Zaragosa on Saturday before
having the
operation and it is expected that he will be going into hospital early
next week.
The Dutch international stated that he was convinced that he will be fit for
the start of the new season.
|
| Kluivert
scores for Barcelona |
06 May 2002
|
| Dutch
international Patrick Kluivert scored a goal in Barcelona's important 2-0
win against RCD Espanyol. Kluivertd the score from a Marc Overmars
pass and Xavi decided the match with a fine freekick goal. Celta de Vigo's
2-1 defeat by Sevilla FC means that Barça are guaranteed of at least 4th
place and can even climb to an end-of-season 3rd place.
|
| Van
Gaal returns to Barcelona? |
03 May 2002
|
| Louis
van Gaal looks set to return to his old club Barcelona next season now
that the club's chairman Gaspart has publicly declared his preference for
the former Ajax and Oranje coach. After Barça's board first tested the
waters by naming Van Gaal as a possible candidate in the sports magazine
"Sport", and not getting any negative reactions, a story has
appeared on Catalonian TV station TV-3 confirming that the Dutch coach is
favourite to take over from Carles Rexach. Van Gaal is currently staying
in his appartment just north of Barcelona and remains without a club for
next season. He's never made a secret of his desire to return to the club,
where he's always been treated as royalty, and has set a goal of taking
the team to the final of the Champions League if he returns. After two
disastrous seasons under Serra Ferrer and Rexach, Barcelona have missed
out on the final of the C-L this season, being knocked out by arch-rivals
Real Madrid and are currently in 5th place in the league (just outside the
top four C-L earning positions). |
| Four
Dutch players in English FA Cup Final? |
02 May 2002
|
| Four
Dutch players could take part in Saturday's English FA Cup Final as
Chelsea face London rivals Arsenal in the battle for the trophy! Dennis
Bergkamp will probably turn out for "The Gunners" while Mario
Melchiot, Boudewijn Zenden and Jerrell Hasselbaink could be on the
opposing team for "The Blues". The match, which attracts
countless millions of television viewers from all over the world, will
actually take place (in another country) at Cardiff's Millenium Stadium in
Wales due to the fact that the historic Wembley Stadium in London is
currently undergoing an extensive renovation. Bergkamp will be happy to
start after missing one final in 1998 due to injury and last season only
being fielded for 1 minute! His scintillating form this season should
guarantee him more action than that this Saturday while
Chelsea's Melchiot could create a little bit of history as he may become
the first Dutch player to ever play in two FA Cup Finals (he experienced
his first in 2000)! In 1983 Arnold Mühren was the first Dutch player to
ever appear in an FA Cup Final when playing for Manchester United against
Brighton (4-0). Jaap Stam (Man United), Ed de Goey and Mario Melchiot
(Chelsea), Marc Overmars and Dennis Bergkamp (Arsenal) plus George Boateng
(Aston Villa) have since followed in his footsteps!

to sell Van Gastel |
01 May 2002
|
| Former-Feyenoorder
Jean-Paul van Gastel's Italian adventure is over after Ternana Calcio
announced that they are looking for another club for him (Van
Gastel moved to Italy last January).
The 30 year-old's €300,000 Euro annual salary is too expensive for the
Serie B side who are having severe financial problems and are threatened
with relegation to the Serie C.

Former Roda JC trainer Sef Vergoossen has been voted "Trainer of
the Year" in the Belgian Premier League. Vergoossen was awarded the

Racing Genk to their historic, only second-ever league title. |
| Kluivert
scores as Barcelona win |
28 Apr 2002
|
| Patrick
Kluivert scored a goal yesterday as Barcelona beat Villareal. It took a
while for Barça to get going after Víctor had put the visitors ahead in
the 15th minute but Luis Enrique finally drew them level in the 54th
minute. Villareal's resistance then collapsed as three more goals by
Thiago Motta (55th), Patrick Kluivert (66th) and Javier Saviola (70th)
took the final score to 4 - 1. Despite the win Barça remain in 4th place.

| Zenden
scores for Chelsea |
27 Apr 2002
|
| Dutch
international Boudewijn Zenden scored a goal for Chelsea today in their 0
- 2 win at Middlesbrough. Maybe his appearance, and goal, will earn him a
place in the lineup against Arsenal for the FA Cup final next week.

| Van
Nistelrooy scores spot-shot goal |
27 Apr 2002
|
| Manchester United
are
back in 2nd place in the English Premiership today via a Ruud van
Nistelrooy spot shot in the 45th minute as
they beat Ipswich Town 1 - 0. The
Dutch international chalked up yet
another Premiership goal this afternoon and the
goal getter is now joint top
scorer in the Premier League, sharing the number 1 position with fellow
international Jerrell Hasselbaink. Sir
Alex Ferguson fielded a young and inexperienced side that quickly found
itself in trouble as Ipswich threatend to score several times in theng quater-of-an-hour. "The Red Devils" were awarded a
penalty in the 45th minute when Van Nistelrooy was awarded the
penalty for a somewhat theatrical fall after a slight tug of the
shirt by Titus Bramble. In the 2nd half
Ipswich continued to look threatening but couldn't find the back of the
net. Their increasing desperation gave Mancunians the chance to regroup
and get back into the match and almost got another goal but Roy Keane's
shot hit the bar.

| Lazio
to swap Stam for Juventus' Davids? |
28 Apr 2002
|
|
Rumour has it that
Lazio Roma are intending to exchange Dutch international Jaap Stam for Juventus's Dutch international Edgar Davids. Lazio's manager Sergio Cragnotti and
Juventus' general manager Luciano
Moggi recently met to discuss the possible swap. If the deal goes through
then Lazio Roma will also have to pay an additional sum of money for
Davids.

Boer to play Cup Final with broken toe |
27 Apr 2002
|
|
Ronald de Boer has decided that he will take the risk of playing for Rangers with
a broken toe and will have pain-killing injections to help ease the
discomfort in order to
be able to play in the Scottish FA Cup final against Celtic one week from
today. The Dutch international said, "The toe has still not healed,
is very sore and it's
bothering me. I trained on Tuesday and took part in a little game, but
apart from that I've rested it for most of this week. I will take another
injection for the final even if it feels better than it does now because
I don't want anything to occur during the match which could affect my game".

| Rumoured
Barcelona return for Van Gaal |
27 Apr 2002
|
| Barcelona
coach Carles Rexach has dismissed reports in the Spanish media that Louis
van Gaal could be taking his job over at the club. Rexach believes that
the media are only interested in how people react to such rumours.
Fuelling the stories is a supposed difference of opinion between
Barcelona's president Joan Gaspart and Rexach as to how the club can best
renew the current squad. Gaspart would like to completely rebuild the team
whereas Rexach still has faith in the majority of the current squad.
Rexach said, "There is no need for a major overhaul despite Barça's
difficult season. I consider it rather over-the-top of president Joan
Gaspart to talk of signing ten new players! Three or four would do the
job." |
| Hasselbaink
to end career with Chelsea? |
27 Apr 2002
|
| Dutch
international Jerrell Hasselbaink has been talking about his wish to
extend his current contract with Chelsea, which runs till 2004, and end
his career with "The Blues". The English Premiership's top
scorer ( on 23 goals) is
very much at home at the the South-London side, where he's been since 2000, and loves the city itself! He's been made to
feel far more appreciated than he ever did, or does, in Holland and
recently told the media that he had no intention of playing again in
the Netherlands! He expects to negotiate a new deal this summer and the
club, for their part, announced their desire to keep him at Stamford
Bridge during the winter when the striker's former employer Atlético
Madrid expressed an interest in re-signing him.

Nistelrooy chases C-L topscore record |
24 Apr 2002
|
| It's
been one hell of a season for Ruud van Nistelrooy - the Dutch
international has been breaking records
in the English Premiership, as well as
at Manchester United "Player of the Year"
by his colleagues. To top off a remarkable season, by anyone's standards, "Van the
Man" is now close to setting a new top-scoring
record in the Champions League! He only needs to score one more C-L goal
to equal the record shared by Mario Jardel (for FC Porto), Rivaldo (for
Barcelona) and Raúl (for Real Madrid), who all put away 10 goals in the
1999/2000 season. The last time a player put away that many balls was
during the tournament's infancy in the 1992/93 season. Van Nistelrooy scored his 9th
goal of this C-L season against Deportivo La Coruña, equalling Jari
Litmanen's (for Ajax in 1995/96) and Simone Inzaghi's (for Lazio Roma in
1999/2000) efforts.

Jaap Staap scored his 1st Serie A goal yesterday afternoon, scoring the 1-1 in Lazio Rome's 5-4 win
against Verona. Jaap Stam was not present for the full 90 minutes of the
match as he was sent off for arguing with the referee. The Dutch
international, who has already missed out on most of this season for
'nandrolone'
abuse will now have to sit out another ban for his verbal abuse.

| Hiddink
still believes in Korea's chances |
21 Apr 2002
|
|
Guus Hiddink still believes that South Korea
can do well in this Summer's World Cup after their convincing 2-0 win
against Costa Rica. South Korea, who will be co-hosting the event with
Japan, have faced a lot of criticism lately after having only managed 3
wins in their last 10 games. After their latest victory Guus Hiddink said
"Ive always had confidence in my players, even after the defeats in
past months. Now we know how to defend, we know how to attack and we know
how to apply pressure in midfield. So I have to pay tribute to the team
for the tactical progress they have made. n the past everyone wanted
to run forward to score but now that has changed and they are more mature.
We had four or five chances and scored twice."

| Van
Nistelrooy scores as United win |
20 Apr 2002
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy scored a 41st minute goal as Manchester United overpowered
Chelsea 0 - 3 at Stamford Bridge. Paul Scholesd the score in the
15th minute, Van Nistelrooy put away the 2nd from a Solskær pass and
returned the favour by serving up the Norwegian striker with the chance
for the 0- 3 in the 86th. Chelsea put on a weak performance and the team's
inability to make an impression on their opponents meant that the English
Premiership's top scorer, Dutch striker Jerrell Hasselbaink, didn't get a
look in this afternoon.

accomodate all the fans who wanted to see the Hamburg derby! In the 19th
minute Meijer's cross was headed in by Argentian striker Bernardo Romeo
for ther and, just before the break, Martin Grot's shot was
deflected in for the 0 - 2. In the 2nd half Meijer headed on a 49th minute
corner to Hoogma, the North-German's 'Abwehrchef', who headed in the 0-3
and Romeo took the final score to 0 - 4.

| De
Boer and Kluivert stay with Barcelona |
16 Apr 2002
|
| While
Barcelona chairman Joan Gaspart has been making it clear that he wants to
keep Frank de Boer at Camp Nou, Patrick Kluivert's agent Sigi Lens has
been denying reports in the Spanish press that Barcelona were planning to
sell the Dutch striker, who's under contract till 2006, and Brazilian
Rivaldo this summer. De Boer has already turned down an extension for
one-year only but Gaspart is now indicating that another offer could be
forthcoming. Kluivert has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave,
if a certain amount of money is bid for his services, but in today's
climate of financial uncertainty it's unlikely that any club would be mad
enough to pay the undoubtedly huge amount of money it would take to free
him from his contract.

goal for Espanyol in the 62nd.

| Hasselbaink
rules out return to Holland |
15 Apr 2002
|
| Dutch
international Jimmy Hasselbaink has stated he will never return to play in Holland
again due to the amount of negative publicity he's received at home.
Hasselbaink has never been accorded the recognition in Holland that he
has been given abroad. Hasselbaink said last weekend "I don't know why I have to keep proving
myself in Holland. I always score the first, and most important
goals. I also provide more assists than any other
player,
which should silence anyone who claims I am not a team player.
But people continue to treat me as though I'm inferior. There is
little respect involved when people say 'Jimmy is just a
goalscorer'.
I find that belittling"

made 3 appearances for the Dutch national team, recently had
trials with
Newcastle United

targeted by Man United? |
28 Mar 2002

Dutch
international Michael Reiziger could well be swapping sunny Spain
for rainy Manchester next season. The "Red Devils" have

Milan right back, who moved to Barcelona in 1997, but the amount of money
on offer is believed to be less than the €10 million Euro asking price.

| Bergkamp
in stunning form for Arsenal |
24 Mar 2002
|
| Dennis
Bergkamp was in stunning form for Arsenal as the English
Premiership side beat Newcastle United 3 - 0 to go through to the
semi-finals of the English FA Cup yesterday. Robert Pirezd
the score at Highbury in the 2nd minute (disappointingly he had to
leave injured halfway through the 1st half) and Bergkamp added a
2nd only 7 minutes later. He was the inspirating force at the
heart of the "Gunners" and only the woodwork stopped
what would have been another 2 unbelievably fine goals during the
rest of the match. Sol Campbell headed in the 3rd goal but it was
"Dennis the Menace" who was the talk-of-the-town, and
the country, with another spectacular performance. After the match
"The Magpies" (and former PSV) coach Bobby Robson was,
as always, his usual generous/honest self in his praise for the
Dutch striker's 'works-of-art'. |

22 Mar 2000
|
| Glasgow
Rangers chairman David Murray stated last night that he is very happy
with Dick Advocaat's service to the club in his role as technical director
after his input in the signing of Barcelona player Mikel Arteta. The

the 18 year old midfielder. |

Ex Fortuna Sittard
goalie Arno van Zwam has asked his club to playcards with him
after hearing rumors that Japanese international Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi
could be joining the club. Van Zwam who joined Jubilo Iwata 2 years ago

Japan's number 1 goalkeeper.

| Clarence
Seedorf back in form |
15 Mar 2002
|
| Dutch
international Clarence Seedorf has been making a dramatic return to the
form which, in the past, earned him a contract with Italian giants Inter
Milan and his place in the Oranje squad. After putting on an impressive
performance in the 'Serie A' last weekend the midfielder was again a
'dynamo' at the heart of Inter's lineup in their UEFA Cup clash with
Valencia last night. Nicola Ventola put the Italian side ahead from a
corner but 15 minutes later Francisco Rufete equalized, even though
Valencia had already been reduced to 10 men when Cristian 'Kily' González
got sent off. Inter failed to cash in on their numerical advantage, though
Seedorf came close to getting the matchwinner for them with a late header
that missed by a whisker. |

Dunfermline Athletic after
successfully completing a trial. The 31 year-old

10 Mar 2002

| Dutch
international Arthur Numan scored the equalizer for Glasgow Rangers in
their derby with Glasgow Celtic. Rangers had an early 'goal'
rather unjustly disallowed before Celtic went ahead at Ibrox Park through
Stilian Petrov in the 25th minute. Rangers fought back after the break and
Numan blasted in an unstoppable shot for the 1 - 1. They remain 10 points
adrift of their arch-rivals who are well clear at the top of the Scottish
Premiership. They can afford to start preparations for yet another
Championship victory party!
|
| Seedorf
scores twice but Inter only draw |
10 Mar 2002
|
| Clarence
Seedorf scored both Inter Milan goals in their 2 - 2 draw against Juventus
yesterday. The Dutch midfielder deservedlyd the score for Inter
after only 7 minutes but, despite Milan remaining the stronger side, David
Trezeguet equalized. After the break the tempo was not as high as in the
1st half and Juventus looked to have sealed the match in their favour when
Igor Tudor scored in the 82nd minute. Seedorf's fine distance shot drew
Milan level again to give them a point.

| Bogarde
back in action for Chelsea |
08 Mar 2002
|
| Just
when he thought he was never going to play for Chelsea again
Winston Bogarde has been given a place in the 1st team squad. It will be
the Dutch defender's first training sessions with "The Blues"
since the pre-season warmup. Since then he's been training with the
reserve squad, and even spent some time training with AZ in Alkmaar last
autumn, while growing increasingly pessimistic about his future at
Stamford Bridge. So the news that he's back in the squad has come as a
complete surprise!
|
| Van
Nistelrooy's legend keeps growing |
07 Mar 2002
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy's two goals against Tottenham Hotspur takes his season's
total for the club to 32, making him the first United player to score that
many goals in one season since George Best in the 1965/66 season, when the
former Northern Ireland international needed 52 matches to reach his
total. Far and away the most impressive "Red Devil" so far is
former Scottish international Dennis Law, who put away no fewer than 39
goals in 52 matches in the 1963/63 season, and 46 in 41 matches the season
before that! "Van the Man" still has 8 Premiership and at least
two C-L matches in which he can increase his tally. Another 3 goals and he
will become the 2nd best scoring striker in United's history!!
|
| Van
Nistelrooy scores 2 for United |
07 Mar 2002
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy scored a 43rd minute spot-shot goal and a fine close-up
goal in the 76th minute as Manchester United
beat Tottenham Hotspur 4 - 0 last night. The penalty was awarded for a foul by the
Spurs' Mauricio Taricco. "Van the Man's" goals take him past
Thierry Henry and make him the Premiership's top scorer on 21 goals. David Beckham also scored 2 goals, in the
15th and 64th minutes.

| Bergkamp
scores 'beauty' for Arsenal |
02 Mar 2002
|
| Dennis
Bergkamp scored an unbelievable beauty of a goal in the 11th minute at St.
James Park against Newcastle this evening. Setting the attacking move in
motion with a wide pass to Perez, the former Dutch international sped
goalwards to receive back the ball, flicking it delicately over his
shoulder and around a defender to slot it home for the 0 - 1. Despite the
fact that Newcastle had most of the ball during the 1st half it was Sol
Campbell who headed in the 2nd for "The Gunners" in the
41st from a Bergkamp freekick. After the break Arsenal got better and
Newcastle couldn't create thengs from which to score. Bergkamp was
substituted in the 71st after an impressive and creative performance. His
team return south with an important win that puts them equal top with
Manchester United. |

28 Feb 2002
|
| Arsenal
beat Bayer Leverkusen 4 - 1 last night in their Champions League match at
Highbury and Dennis Bergkamp, who played the whole 90 minutes(!) for a
change, scored the 4 - 0 in the 83rd minute with a beauty of a lob.
"The Gunners" were already 2 goals up after only 7 minutes,
thanks to goals by Robert Pires (5th) and Thierry Henry (7th). After the
break Patrick Vieira made it 3 - 0 before Bergkamp's stunning
cherry-on-the-cake goal. Zoltan Sebescen got Leverkusen's 87th minute
consolation goal.

could take up to 9 months!

| Ruud
van Nistelrooy hits 30 goal mark |
27 Feb 2002
|
| The
'legend' of Ruud van Nistelrooy just keeps on growing - his spot-shot goal
against Nantes was his 30th of the season for Manchester United and also
his 8th Champions League goal so far, making him C-L joint top-scorer
along with Davide Trezeguet. The Dutch striker is well on his way to
becoming one of "The Red Devils" all time top scorers - it's
taken him just 36 matches to reach the 30 mark, including 19 Premiership
goals, 2 in the FA Cup and one in the Charity Shield plus the
aforementioned 8 C-L goals. He's also revealing himself to be United's
penalty specialist, having put away 4 out of 4 spot-shots he's taken so
far this season. See

surprised by the French side's attacking football early on and went 0 - 1
down when Frédéric Da Rocha scored in the 17th. It didn't last long as,
60 seconds later, David Beckham curled in one of his free-kick specials
for the equalizer. Ole Gunnar Solskjær celebrated his birthday with a 2nd
in the 31st and Michaël Silvestre put away the 3rd in the 38th. "Van
the Man" put away the spot-shot for the 4 - 1 in the 64th and
Solskjær made it 5 - 1 in the 78th.

| De
Boer fit for Feyenoord v Rangers? |
26 Feb 2002
|
| Frank
de Boer will possibly be fit enough to travel to the Kuip on Thursday for
the return leg of the UEFA Cup clash between Glasgow Rangers and
Feyenoord. The striker picked up an ankle injury during the recent
friendly between Holland and England. It's still not 100% certain that
he'll be fit enough to actually play on Thursday but, according to coach
Alex McLeish, the signs are positive.

| Overmars
to return to Premiership? |
24 Feb 2002
|
| According
to stories in the Spanish press Marc Overmars could be set to make a
return to the English Premiership. He's unhappy at Barcelona, without a
place in the team and being used as a substitute doesn't go down well with
the Dutch international. Liverpool could be the 29 year-old winger's most
likely destination, if "The Reds" are willing to pay the €16
million Euros asking price.

| Van
Nistelrooy gets United match-winner |
22 Feb 2002
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy scored the only goal of the match for Manchester United
against Aston Villa at Old Trafford. Despite dominating the match United
were unable to connect well with the ball where it mattered most, in the
box, and Van Nistelrooy missed several great chances to put his team
ahead. It wasn't until Aston Villa's George Boateng's clearance was
blocked by a trio of United players in the 50th minute that Ole Gunnar
Solksjær was able to slip the ball to "Van the Man" who put it
past Peter Schmeichel.
|
| Van
der Gouw doesn't want to stop |
21 Feb 2002
|
| Raimond
van der Gouw has been talking about his desire to go on playing top level football
for another couple of years. Although he's already 38 years-old he still
feels fit enough and hungry enough to play on for a season or two and is
even contemplating an adventure in American Major League Soccer. He signed
for an extra year with Manchester United last summer, with the
understanding that when his playing career was over he'd join the club's
technical staff. Now that Wigan's Roy Carroll has arrived the Dutchman has
become the "Red Devils" 3rd keeper and it's highly unlikely
he'll be offered an extension on his current deal.

Kluivert scores for Barcelona |
20 Feb 2002
|
| Kluivert
scored an important 83rd minute goal tonight for Barcelona as they faced
AS Roma in the Champions League. The Italian side had gone ahead with a
goal by Christian Panucci in the 57th minute but the Dutch international
put away his 6th goal in 8 matches to level the score.

Davids faces assault charges |
20 Feb 2002
|
| Dutch
international Edgar Davids faces serious assault charges after his
girlfriend lodged an official complaint with the Amsterdam police. The 23
year-old photo-model has had a relationship for some years with the
Juventus star and they also have a two year-old child. She's claiming that
the violent outbursts have been going on for most of that time and got
particularly bad when Davids received his ban for 'nandrolone abuse' last
year. This looks like being a very serious and nasty court case - hardly
what the Dutch international, Oranje or football at large needs at the
moment.
|
| Kluivert
gets match-winner for Barcelona |
17 Feb 2002
|
| Dutch
international Patrick Kluivert, back in form after a lean period, scored
an exciting diving match-winning header for Barcelona to put them into 3rd
place. Diego Tristan put Deportivo La Coruna ahead after 10 minutes, Luis
Enrique equalizing 6 minutes later. Sergio headed the visitors back into
the lead in the 67th minute but Barça came back with a storming finish,
Javier Saviola drawing them level before Kluivert's cherry-on-the-cake 3
minutes from time gave them the points, putting them level with
arch-rivals Real Madrid.

| Rob
Maas extends Hertha contract |
15 Feb 2002
|
| Ex-Feyenoorder
Rob Maas will shortly be extending his contract with Bundesliga side
Hertha BSC till the summer of 2004. The 32 year-old defender joined them
in 1998 but a series of injuries meant he hardly played any matches in his
first 3 years with the Berlin side. He's managed to earn himself a regular
1st team place this season, making 17 appearances so far out of a total of
29 since 1998. There's a clause in his new contract which automatically
earns him an extension for a further year if he plays at least 25 matches
in the 2003/2004 season.
|
| Kluivert
overtakes Cruijff and Lenstra |
14 Feb 2002
|
| Patrick
Kluivert's goal against England last night was his 34th for Oranje which
means the Barcelona striker has now passed Johan Cruijff and Abe Lenstra
in the ranking of Holland's all-time top scorers. The only remaining
goal-scoring obstacles between him and the no.1 position are Faas Wilkes
on 35 goals and the current no.1, Arsenal's Dennis Bergkamp, who put away
a total of 37 goals in his international career. At 25 years of age
Kluivert still has more than a few internationals ahead of him and can
reasonably expect to take over that coveted all-time top scorer title
during Oranje's qualifying matches for EURO 2004.

| Seedorf
scores but Inter Milan lose |
11 Feb 2002
|
| Clarence
Seedorf's goal was insufficient for a tame looking Internazionale to win
their match against Bologna yesterday and close the gap on leaders AS Roma
and Juventus. The home team deservedly went 2 - 0 up through goals by
Pecchia and Zauli just before halftime. Seedorf's 88th minute goal was too
little, too late to squeeze a point out of the match. |

Maas
extends Hertha BSC stay |
06 Feb 2002
|
| Rob
Maas has extended his contract with Bundesliga side Hertha BSC till 2005.
The 32 year-old defender is extremely pleased with the new vote of
confidence, especially as he's missed a lot of action during the last two
seasons due to an achilles injury. He's back in the team now, is playing
as well as ever and looking forward to being reunited with Huub Stevens
(taking over this summer) who was trainer when he played for PSV. His
teammate Dick van Burik looks set to leave the Berlin side, even though
they want to keep him for another 5 seasons. There are a couple of English
Premiership sides, and a French club, interested in the 28 year-old former
NAC and Utrecht defender whose current contract, which runs till 2003,
includes a clause allowing him to leave this summer.

scores for Rangers |
06 Feb 2002
|
| Bert
Konterman scored the extra-time match-winner for Glasgow Rangers as they
beat rivals Celtic last night to reach the final of the Scottish League Cup, the
victory being extra sweet as it was Rangers' first win in 5 meetings with
"The Old Firm". Peter Løvenkrands put them ahead just before
halftime but Bobo Balde equalized 15 minutes before the end of 90 minutes
play. Shota Arveladze missed a penalty for them in extra-time before
Konterman saved the day and gave new trainer McLeish his first win in his
first match against Celtic.

06 Feb 2002
|
| Dutch
striker Arie van Lent was Borussia Mönchengladbach's 'Man of the Match'
with a hattrick in their 4 - 0 win against 1.FC Köln yesterday evening.
The former Werder Bremen and SpVgg Greuter Fürth player put away all 3
goals within the space of 14 minutes (54th to 68th). The points are
vitally important in his team's bid to avoid relegation, putting them into
14th place on 20 points fron 21 games. |

05 Feb 2002

| Dennis
Bergkamp has been handed out a 3 match suspension for his red card offence
in the match between Arsenal and Liverpool. The former Dutch international
was sent off for a foul on Jamie Carragher but protested that he never
touched him. After studying video footage of the match the FA have
rejected his appeal and the striker will now miss Premiership games
against Everton and Fulham as well as an FA Cup clash.

| Vanenburg
amazed by KNVB refusal |
05 Feb 2002
|
| Gerald
Vanenburg is amazed by the Dutch FA's (KNVB) refusal to allow the former
international to follow the accelerated coaching course as recently
offered Marco van Basten. The preconditions for becoming eligible are that
a player has to have made 42 international appearances as well as playing
in the finals of 5 international tournaments. The 37 year-old former
midfielder created a unique 'record' in 1988 when he won everything he
took part in: the League title, the Cup, the European Cup 1 with PSV, the
European title with Oranje and in 1990 he was a member of Oranje during
their disastrous expedition to the 1990 World Cup. The former Ajax and PSV
player will now try to acquire the same kind of coaching qualifications in
Germany where
he was assistant trainer with 1860 München for a short while. |

and goal for Van Nistelrooy |
02 Feb 2002
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy scored a beauty of a goal and put away a penalty for
Manchester United in their 4 - 1 win against Sunderland. Picking up a deep
through-ball in the penalty area he let it bounce once before
striking it hard for the 3rd United goal in the 28th, his spot-shot coming
in the 44th. Phil Neville (6th) and David Beckham (25th) scored the first
two goals, Kevin Phillips (12th) putting away Sunderland's sole goal of
the afternoon.

| Ronald
de Boer scored in yesterday's match between Glasgow Rangers and
Kilmarnock. The Dutch internationald the score and Norwegian
international Tore André Flo gave the Rangers a 2 - 0 lead which they
then proceeded to give away in the last 5 minutes when Boyd and Johnson
drew Kilmarnock level! Glasgow Rangers are now a full fifteen points
adrift of Scottish Premier League leaders Celtic! |
| Ruud
scores goal as United beat Bolton |
30 Jan 2002
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy scored an 84th minute goal last night in Manchester
United's 0 - 4 away win at Bolton Wanderers. After failing to score in his
last match 'Van the Man' was probably beginning to wonder if he was going
to have a goalless spell after
his record breaking run of scoring in 8 consecutive matches.
Visibly relieved, he grabbed the chance to tap away the Mancunians' 4th
goal of the evening after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had earlier put away a
hattrick in the 15th, 39th and 64th minutes. |
| Erik
Meijer out for 3 - 4 weeks |
29 Jan 2002
|
| Hamburger
SV will miss their Dutch striker Erik Meijer for the coming 3 - 4 weeks
after the Limburger pulled out of last weekend's match against Stuttgart.
The 32 year-old has been bothered by a groin problem since the pre-season
preparations and the injury has now been aggravated by all the matches
he's played. Medication and painkilling injections are not helping
anymore, necessitating an operation. He hopes to be back by the end of
February while teammate, defender Nico Jan Hoogma remains out of action
with a thigh injury.

| Bergkamp
scores winner and gets red card |
27 Jan 2002
|
| Dennis
Bergkamp scored the winning goal for Arsenal in their spectacular FA Cup
clash with Liverpool at Highbury this afternoon, the Dutchman headed in
the only goal of the match. After teammate Martin Keown had been sent for
an early shower in the 67th, Dennis joined him when he was handed out a
red card for a dreadful 'tackle' on Jamie Carragher in the 71st minute and
Carragher joined them in the 72nd for throwing back a coin which was
hurled at him from the crowd. |

26 Jan 2002
|
| Chelsea's
Mario Melchiot has been handed out a 3 match ban for an offence committed
in the FA Cup 5 - 1 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur. The referee Mark Halsey

misdemeanour (hitting Teddy Sheringham in the face) but the FA, after
studying the video of the match, have now corrected his mistake.

|
| Lazio's
Dutch international Jaap Stam has been banned for 5 months by Italy's FA
and fined €50,000 Euros for
failing a doping test on October 13th after the match against Atlanta.
It effectively means the end of the season for the 29 year-old defender
although, since he's been suspended since November 16th, he could in
theory still play in the last 3 matches of the season. Lazio are planning
an appeal! |
| No
Newcastle deal for Boussatta |
24 Jan 2002
|
| Dries
Boussatta has failed to impress Bobby Robson sufficiently to earn himself
a deal with Newcastle United. The
23 year-old striker left AZ at the beginning of January
and his lack of match experience this season proved too much of an
obstacle to joing the "Magpies". His agent Hans Werdekker
confirms that there are still a number of Premiership and First Division
sides following him plus interest from France and Spain! Boussatta himself
played for Holland a couple of times at the end of the 90s before
switching his allegiance to Morocco. He's only played a couple of
friendlies for the North Africans and has now decided not to play for them
anymore (it caused him problems with AZ when he was called up for
internationals). The fact that he only played friendlies means he's still
eligible to earn himself a place in the Dutch squad - once he's found
himself a new club where he can show he's got the 'right stuff'!! |

24 Jan 2002
|
| Borussia
Mönchengladbach's Quido Lanzaat
is set to start a week's trial with RKC in an attempt to kickstart his
career. A product of Ajax's youth scheme he made his professional debut in
Ajax's 2 - 1 against Sparta on November 7th 1999 but in January 2000 he
was on his way to Germany's Bundesliga. He's only made 10 appearances for
B.M. and will be glad to get the chance to impress Martin Jol in Waalwijk.

24 Jan 2002
|
| Dutch
international Boudewijn Zenden is set to miss 4 to 6 weeeks of football
after being injured in a clash with Teddy Sheringham last night during the
League Cup duel with Spurs. A deep flesh wound has caused muscle damage
which will take several weeks to heal. It's bad news for the former PSV
and Barcelona player who only recently returned to action after a
hamstring injury kept him out of action for most of December and the
beginning of January. Last night's match was his first in the starting
lineup for some time after two appearances as a substitute against Norwich
in the FA Cup and West Ham in the Premiership.

ten minutes later Thierry Henry doubled the score but Leicester fought back
in the 2nd half and were rewarded with a goal by Muzzy Izzet. Arsenal were
lucky that Matt Elliott failed to head in one of several chances he had to
draw Leicester level and there was a sigh of relief when substitute Sylvain
Wiltord scored goal no.3 for the Londoners in injury time.

| Van
Gaal gets the United job? |
23 Jan 2002
|
| Dutch
daily newspaper the "Algemeen Dagblad" has published a story
indicating that negotiations between Manchester United and Louis van Gaal
are close to completion and that the former Ajax, Barcelona and Oranje
coach is set to take over from Alex Ferguson at the end of this season.
The club's chief executive Peter Kenyon had plenty of contact with Van
Gaal during the Dutchman's reign at Ajax when he himself was director at
Umbro. Former Ajax coach Co Adriaanse could well join Van Gaal as head of
the Mancunians' youth academy (both men have worked together during Van
Gaal's time in Amsterdam).

career with PSV and settle down in the house he and his girlfriend have
bought in the Eindhoven area. It goes without saying that, for the time
being, he's going to continue impressing us with his scoring skills
at Manchester United and adding to his already legendary status. Still,
let's hope it's not going to be too long before we'll be seing him bring
some added excitement to life in the Ere Divisie. We've been calling for a
return to Holland of more players 'working' abroad in our Speakers

Nistelrooy in United Hall of Fame |
08 Jan 2002
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy has only been with the "Red Devils" a few months
but he's already become part of the club's mythology and enters the
Mancunians' "Hall of Fame"! The two goals he put away for
Manchester United against Aston Villa in their FA Cup 3rd Round match
created the new record - the Dutch international has scored in every one
of his last 7 matches which is a new club record. Such illustrious names
as Joe Spence, Liam Whelan, Bobby Charlton, David Herd and Dwight Yorke
only got as far as scoring in 6 consecutive matches. If he scores again on
Sunday in the Premiership it'll be again a new record as he will have
scored in 7 consecutive league matches, equalling Mark Stein's record for
Chelsea in 1993/1994! |
| Van
Nistelrooy gets 2 as United beat Villa |
06 Jan 2002
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy was Manchester United's hero today, scoring two goals but
starting on the bench! Aston Villa played a strong match and, in a short
spell after the break, a goal by Ian Taylor plus an own goal by Phil
Neville had them 2 - 0 up. Van Nistelrooy's appearance on the hour changed
all that as he went on to get his 12th goal in 14 matches, scoring in all
of his last 7 matches (a club record!). Ole Gunnar Solkjaer got one back
in the 77th and "Van the Man"s 2 goals in the 80th and 82nd give
United a 2 - 3 win and a place in the 4th round of the FA Cup. |

06 Jan 2002
|
| Edgar
Davids celebrated a long-awaited return to the midfielder's form-of-old
with the 3rd goal in Juventus' 3 - 0 win against Udinese, Gianluca
Zambrotta and Pavel Nedved putting away the other 2 goals. The Dutch
international had earlier handed out a warning that he was back in
business during the December 23rd 0 - 4 win against Brescia, when he
regained his place in the starting lineup at the expense of the injured
Igor Tudor, and today's performance is confirmation that the 'pitbull' is

Zidane rounded off a piece of solo work, confounding Deportivo's defence,
to make it 2 - 1 and Raúl made it 3 - 1 on the hour.

| Bergkamp
scores in Arsenal FA Cup win |
05 Jan 2002
|
| Dennis
Bergkamp was 'called in from the cold' of his regular place on the bench
to add his contribution to "The Gunners" 4 - 2 FA Cup 3rd
Round win against First Division Watford. The Londoners were 2 - 0 up
within 10 minutes after goals by Thierry Henry (9th) and Fredrik Ljungberg
(10th). Despite the enormous difference in 'quality' between the two teams
Gifton Noel-Williams headed one in for Watford only 3 minutes later! The
2nd half was less spectacular as Arsenal played the waiting game while
their opponents lacked the 'muscle' to hit back. Kanu headed in the 3rd in
the 63rd before super-sub Bergkamp got the 4th in the 85th. Marcus Gayle
scored Watford's late 2nd in the 90th.

scores but Chelsea lose |
01 Jan 2002
|
| Chelsea
had a disappointing 2 - 4 defeat by lowly Southampton at Stamford Bridge
which makes it practically impossible for the South-London side to achieve
their ambitions of becoming Premiership Champions this season. James
Beattie put the visitors ahead after only 7 minutes but Eidur Gudjohnsen
(20th) and Jerrell Hasselbaink (45th) gave'"The Blues" the
advantage going into the break. They didn't hold onto it for very long as
goals by Marians Pahars (55th), Chris Marsden (61st) and a 2nd by Beattie
(73rd) gave Southampton three very useful points.

Nistelrooy goal as United beat Fulham |
30 Dec 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy scored his 6th goal in 8 games as Manchester United beat
Fulham 2 - 3 today. Goalie Edwin van der Sar was unbeaten in 5 out of his
last 6 matches for the South-London side but a bad clearance this
afternoon by the Dutch international gave Ryan Giggs the chance to put the
"Red Devils" ahead after only 5 minutes. Van Nistelrooy volleyed
in for the 2 - 0, rounding off an impressive move he and Giggs had put
together. Sylvain Legwinski kept Fulham in the race with a goal before the
stroke of halftime but, soon after the break, Giggs and Van Nistelrooy
delivered the 1 - 3, the former PSV striker heading on for the Welsh
international to put away. Steve Marlet got his 1st goal for Fulham in the
last minute of play to make the final score 2 - 3. |

29 Dec 2001
|
| Michael
Mols scored the only goal in Glasgow Rangers' game against bottom of the
table St.Johnstone - it was his first match since the derby with Celtic on
September 30th (he scored his last goal against Dundee United on August
26th). The former Cambuur Leeuwarden, Twente and Utrecht striker, who
has had a series of injury probems during the last season and a half,
was given a rousing cheer by the home crowd when his name was announced. |
| Van
Nistelrooy in Top 25 'Golden Boot' |
28 Dec 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy's 4 goals of the last week (he's scored 8 in 6 matches in
December) have taken the Manchester United and Oranje striker into the top
25 of the prestigious 'Gouden Schoen' (Golden Boot Award). The
award-ranking is an initiative of European Football Magazines, of which
Dutch football magazine Voetbal International is a member, the others
being Der Kicker (Germany), Gazzetta dello Sport (Italy), World Soccer
(England), Voetbal Magazine (Belgium), Don Balon (Spain) and A Bola
(Portugal). Chelsea's Jerrell Hasselbaink has also gone up in the rankings
and is now No.8.

| Van
Nistelrooy goal as United beat Everton |
26 Dec 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy scored Manchester United's 2nd goal as they won 0 - 2 at
Everton this afternoon. It wasn't until David Beckham appeared as a 2nd
half substituute that the "Red Devils" started to look
threatening and his pass set up Ryan Giggs who headed in for 0 - 1 in the
78th. Giggs' cross 7 minutes later found a willing Van Nistelrooy who
blasted it in from close range for the 0 - 2.

| Heart
operation for Van der Vegt |
24 Dec 2001
|
| Henry
van der Vegt
has had an
operation last week on his heart in a hospital in Germany - the former FC
Zwolle midfielder complained about heart rhythm problems when he moved
from Willem II to Serie A side Udinese in the summer of 1998. He's hardly
played at all this season and it will be year before he knows whether
he'll be able to continue his career.

| Van
Nistelrooy gets 3 against Southampton |
22 Dec 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy took only 30 seconds to score the first of three against
Southampton this afternoon, it was also coincidentally his 100th
professional goal! Van Nistelrooy's hattrick and goals by Ole
Gunnar Solskjaer, Roy Keane and Phil Neville gave the "Red
Devils" another home win to salve the wounds inflicted by recent
disastrous performances and lifts them into 5th place on 30 points from 18
matches. A(nother) poor clearance by Fabian Barthez gave Marians Pahars
the chance to put away a consolation goal for "The Saints".

Duut off to Japan |
22 Dec 2001
|
| Henk
Duut has signed a contract to coach Japanese 2nd Division side Oita (who
just missed out on gaining promotion last season) and starts work in

Stevens decides to leave Schalke 04 |
20 Dec 2001
|
| Huub
Stevens has made the surprise announcement that he's to leave his job as
coach at German Bundesliga side Schalke 04 at the end of this season. The
Limburger is in his 6th season with the Gelsenkirchen side and had led
them to the club's greatest successes - victories in the UEFA Cup in 1997
and the DFB-pokal last year. The "Königsblauen" also just
missed out on becoming German champions on the very last day of last
season.

| Wim
Jansen trainer Urawa Red Diamonds |
18 Dec 2001
|
| Wim
Jansen is to take over as trainer of Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds
(Feyenoorder Shinji Ono's old club) and the former SC Lokeren, Feyenoord,
Saoedi Arabië, Celtic and Sanfrecce Hiroshima coach has signed a contract
till January 2003. Jansen, who left his last club Glasgow Celtic in May
1998, will be working with Hans Ooft who has signed a contract for the
same length of time as team-manager. The news ends speculation that Jansen
might be in line to take over as Oranje coach! |
| Kluivert
scores match-winner for Barcelona |
17 Dec 2001
|
| Patrick
Kluivert scored the only goal of the match between Barcelona and Villareal
to give his team the points. It was Barça's worst performance this season
and they will be relieved that Kluivert was back from sitting out a
suspension to put away the 37th minute match-winner.
|
| Hasselbaink
goal as Chelsea beat Liverpool |
17 Dec 2001
|
| Dutch
international striker Jerrell Hasselbaink had a hand in 2 of the 4 goals,
and scored one himself, as Chelsea beat table-toppers Liverpool 4 - 0 at
Stamford Bridge. Graeme Le Sauxd the score for the storming
"Blues" in the 3rd minute. Hasselbaink added a 2nd in the 28th.
"The Reds" failed to catch up after the break and Gary
McAllister uncharacteristically had his penalty saved by Mario Cudicini.
Chelsea came back and sealed the match with goals bySamuele Dalla Bona ,for
the 3 - 0 in the 72nd minute, and Eidur Gudjohnsen, substituting for
Hasselbaink, in the 90th.

| Westerveld
signs for Real Sociedad |
17 Dec 2001
|
| Sander
Westerveld has decided to sign a contract with Real Sociedad for 3½ years
and now only the obligatory medical stands between him and a move to Spain. Liverpool
are said to be receiving €5.4 million Euros for the goalie who lost his
place with "The Reds" when Jurek Dudek and Chris Kirkland were
signed. Westerveld originally wanted a clause in the contract allowing him
to leave if the 17th placed team get relegated but Real refused.
|
| Van
Nistelrooy scores for United |
16 Dec 2001
|
| Ryan
Giggs' 2nd half appearance for United swung the balance in their favour
and he set-up Ruud van Nistelrooy with the chance to score the only goal
15 minutes before time as the "Red Devils" beat Middlesborough.
|
| Hasselbaink
and Van Nistelrooy score |
13 Dec 2001
|
Jerrell
Hasselbaink scored an injury time goal for Chelsea to put them past
Newcastle United and earn them a place in the semi-finals of the Legaue
Cup.
Meanwhile, Ruud van Nistelrooy scored one of the 5 goals that Manchester
United put away against Derby County for their first win (5 - 0) in 4
matches.
Fulham's Edwin van der Sar was busy stopping goals from being scored
against Fulham as the Londoners held Liverpool to a 0 - 0 draw at Anfield. |
| Westerveld
signs for Real Sociedad? |
12 Dec 2001
|
| According
to Dutch public broadcaster NOS' Studio Sport programme former
Vitesse and Twente keeper Sander Westerveld has signed a contract with
Spanish side Real Sociedad, currently bottom of the table in
the Primera Division, for 2½ years. His agent Ton van Dalen is denying
that a deal's been done and says that Liverpool and Real have yet to agree
terms, added to which a swarm of legal eagle eyes will be scrutinizing the
contract before anything's signed! The Dutch international,
who became superfluous at
Liverpool after the arrival of Jurek Dudek and Chris Kirkland, has
apparently had a
clause put in his new contract allowing him to leave the club if they are
relegated.
|
| Winston
Bogarde returns to Chelsea |
11 Dec 2001
|
| Winston
Bogarde is expected back at Stamford Bridge on Thursday after a 3 week
spell spent training with AZ in Alkmaar (while also undoubtedly doing some
thinking about his future). He's had no role to play with Chelsea since
Claudio Rainieri's arrival and wants to clarify his situation at the
South-London club when he gets back. AZ trainer Henk van Styee would love
to add the defender to the squad (Bogarde played under Van Stee at
Sparta some way back) but there is an almost certainly insurmountable
obstacle - a sizeable transfer fee coupled with the kind of wages
Bogarde would be expecting to pocket!

| Advocaat
to stop soon as Rangers coach |
10 Dec 2001
|
| Dick
Advocaat is leaving his post as coach with Glasgow Rangers and is becoming
the club's technical director . Possible successors are: Berti Vogts
(Kuwait), George Burley (Ipswich Town), Alex McLeish (http://www.footballnl.com) and
George Graham (the former Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur coach). |
| Guillermo
Graaven moves to Scotland? |
06 Dec 2001
|
| Ipswich
Town's Guillermo Graaven could be moving to Scotland after the 19 year-old
was found to be too light-weight for the English Premier league club. The
former Ajax youth player moved to England last summer and is currently on
trial with Motherwell where he has already played a match for their youth
team and scored the winning goal!
|
| Van
Nistelrooy scores 2 as United win |
06 Dec 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy scored two goals as Manchester United beat Boavista
in the Champions League last night. The 25 year-old striker proved his
worth to the "Red Devils" in the 31st and 62nd minutes and they
went on to win 3 - 0 thanks to a 3rd goal by Laurent Blanc.
|
| Davids
threatens to quit Juventus |
06 Dec 2001
|
| Dutch
international Edgar Davids has threatened to quit his current club
Juventus if he gets put on the bench again after he failed to star in the
lineup that kicked-off against Arsenal in Tuesday's C-L match! A series of below-par
performances have meant he's been unable to earn himself a regular place
in the team since returning from his ban for nandrolone 'abuse'. The
Italian club even tried to swap him (together with some money) for
Arsenal's Patrick Vieira in October!
|
| Melchiot
and Hasselbaink score for Chelsea |
01 Dec 2001
|
| Man
United suffered their 5th defeat of the season against Chelsea at Old
Trafford and their 2nd in a row by a London side (they lost 3 - 1 to
Arsenal last Sunday). Ruud van Nistelrooy could have put United ahead in
the 3rd minute but struck the ball straight at goalie Carlo Cudicini.
Mario Melchiotd the score in the 6th minute, heading in from a
Hasselbaink corner. "The Red Devils" looked a pale reflection of
the side who won the title last season and Chelsea dominated the rest of
the match. Hasselbaink was constantly threatening to score but it took
till the 64th before he increased "The Blues" lead. Eidur
Gudjonssen put away the 3rd in the 86th.

| Advocaat
uninterested in Oranje job |
01 Dec 2001
|
| Glasgow
Rangers' coach Dick Advocaat has announced on the club's website that he's
not interested in succeeding Louis van Gaal as Oranje coach. There have
been stories circulating linking him with a return to coaching the
national team, he led the Dutch national team to the 1994 World Cup where
they got as far as the quarter finals, but he's now made clear he has no
intention of a 2nd term. |
| Van
der Lem returns from Japan |
23 Nov 2001
|
| Gerard
van der Lem's adventure in Japan is over before it even started. The
49 year-old was supposed to become Oita Trinita's new trainer as of
January 1st but the club has
failed to gain promotion to the First Division in Japan and there is a
rule which excludes 'foreigners' from becoming the trainer of a Second
Division side. Usually this is not a problem as the 'foreigner' is given
the job of technical director so that he can 'coach' the assistant
trainer. Unfortunately, Trinita and Van der Lem were unable to devise a
means for him to make use of this 'loophole'. However, the former AZ
trainer doesn't exclude the possibility of him getting a job with another
Japanese club. |
| Ed
de Goey returns from injury |
23 Nov 2001
|
| Chelsea's
Ed de Goey looks set to make his return for "The Blues" against
Blackburn Rovers this coming Saturday after a long absence. The 34
year-old has been recovering from an operation on one of his knees but
played his first match in some time for Chelsea's reserves against
Charlton Athletic reserves on Wednesday. Goalie Mark Bosnich tore a thigh
muscle last Sunday in the 0 - 0 draw against Everton and will be out of
action for a month while the 3rd choice keeper Carlo Cudicini is also
suffering from a longterm injury.
|
| Makaay
scores as Deportivo beat Arsenal |
22 Nov 2001
|
| Roy
Makaay scored in Deportivo La Coruña's 2 - 0 win
against "The Gunners". The Dutch international struck in the 9th
minute, as the home team dominated play, and Diego Tristán added the 2nd
in the 28th minute.
|
| Kluivert
scores as Barcelona beat Liverpool |
21 Nov 2001
|
| A
night of celebrations for Frank de Boer, who played his 100th European
match, and Barça who won 1 - 3. Vladimir Šmicer gave Michael Owen the
chance to put Liverpool ahead after 25 minutes but Barcelona improved
steadily throughout the 1st half and Kluivert slammed in Rivaldo's pass
for the equalizer close to half-time. Substitute Fabio Rochembach put away
the 2nd in the 64th and Liverpool collapsed. Barça dominated the 2nd half
and Marc Overmars got the 3rd in the 85th minute.
|
| Van
Nistelrooy in United v. Bayern 1 - 1 |
21 Nov 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy scored what looked like being the match winner for Man
United in their Champions League 1st leg match against Bayern München.
The match was a boring affair until Van Nistelrooy tapped in Mikael
Silvestre's pass in the 75th minute but Bayern's Sergio found an 88th
minute equalizer to preserve his side's unbeaten-in-26-games record.
|
| Rainieri
complains "Zenden's not fit" |
20 Nov 2001
|
| Chelsea
coach Claudio Rainieri is unimpressed by Boudewijn Zenden's fitness and
told him to work harder on improving his condition so that he can play a
whole 90 minutes at the high speed he expects from the winger.
"Bolo', as he was nicknamed in Spain, joined the South-London side
from Barcelona for €12 million Euros last summer but has failed to
deliver the wished-for performances, scoring only once in 11 games.
|
| Numan
extends contract with Rangers |
19 Nov 2001
|
| Arthur
Numan has extended his contract with Glasgow Rangers till 2003 - the 31
year-old former PSV player joined the Scottish side in 1998. Oranje's
defender wants to stay on and help his team win some of the trophies
they've been missing out on during recent years and believes they're
starting to show the form that will deliver the goods.
|
| Makaay
scores hattrick for Deportivo |
18 Nov 2001
|
| Roy
Makaay celebrated his return from injury by scoring a hattrick to give Deportivo La
Coruña 3 points against Real Sociedad. Xabi Alfonso gave the Basque team
the lead after 6 minutes but, although they dominated the match, they also
failed to score.
|
| Van
Nistelrooy scores in United win |
18 Nov 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy headed in theng goal as Manchester United's 2 - 1
beat Leicester yesterday, the Mancunians first win of their last three
matches. Dwight Yorke added the 2nd in the 50th while goalie Fabian
Barthez made up for recent blunders by stopping Mustafa Izzet's penalty. |
| Stam
tests positive for Nandrolone |
17 Nov 2001
|
| Lazio
Roma's Jaap Stam has tested positive for nandrolone and has been
immediately suspended by the Italian FA. The move is in line with new
rules that came into force on October 21st which automatically disqualify
a player on the evidence of the results of only one test. The Dutch
international defender denies all knowledge of any 'banned substance'
abuse but is the 3rd Dutch international to have been 'caught' by the
nandrolone test in the last year. Edgar
Davids and Frank
de Boer were banned respectively for 4 and 2 months. |
| Olympiakos

17 Nov 2001
|
| Henk
Houwaart resigns at Omonia Nicosia |
15 Nov 2001
|
| Omonia
Nicosia's trainer Henk Houwaart has resigned after admitting he'd lost
command/control of the squad. The former Club Brugge and AA Gent coach has
not given the exact reason for his departure but had hinted earlier last
week that he suspected some players of engaging in illegal gambling! It
seems that they were running their own betting shop and were receiving
telephone calls from people asking for betting tips! The
53 year-old coach had been doing a good job since he took over from Arie
Haan last year and helped the club to win the league title for
the first time since 1993. |
| 3
match ban for Melchiot |
14 Nov 2001
|
| UEFA
have banned Chelsea's Mario Melchiot from playing 3 European matches after
he was sent off in the Premier League side's UEFA Cup match against Hapoel
Tel Aviv on October 18th. They lost 2 - 0 in Israel and only managed a 1 -
1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
|
| Winstone
Bogarde trains with AZ |
13 Nov 2001
|
| As
of next week Monday Winstone Bogarde will begin training with AZ -
his current employer Chelsea have no place for him in the 1st team lineup
at present. The 31 year-old defender has been given permission by the
Premier League side to keep fit and maybe even get in some match practice
as of next week Monday in Alkmaar. Trainer Henk van Stee said that Bogarde
had expressed an interest in working together again - the two men had
enjoyed a good working relationship some years ago at Sparta. After playing for the Rotterdammers he moved on
to play for Ajax, AC Milan and Barcelona before signing for Chelsea in
September 2000. He's only put in 9 matches for the Stamford Bridge club
and has a contract which runs till 2004. However, he's had his fair share
of injuries in the last year and a half (he was out for 4 months with a
knee injury at the end of last year) and it's no secret that he doesn't
get on with trainer Claudio Rainieri either. There are no obligations on
either side in the current situation although AZ are not unwilling to
consider a rental agreement on the 20-capped former international.

Matthaei wants return to Holland |
13 Nov 2001

Matthaei has asked Dunfermline to terminate his contract and wants to
return to play in Holland, a little Eerste Divisie club would do nicely!

in the Eerste Divisie match between De Graafschap and AZ (which ended
4-1).

| Kluivert
scores penalty for Barcelona |
12 Nov 2001
|
| Patrick
Kluivert scored with a spot-shot for Barcelona in their win against Real
Valladolid. Javier Saviola (18th) and Carlos Puyol (20th) got them off to
a good start while Kluivert's 63rd minute penalty plus a 2nd goal by
Saviola in the 88th gave them a flattering 4 - 0 result.

| Van
Gaal drops Westerveld |
30 Oct 2001
|
| Oranje
coach Louis van Gaal has dropped Sander Westerveld from the squad after an
earlier warning that Holland's reserve keeper needed to get a new club
a.s.a.p. (and the essential match-play experience) if he wanted to hold
onto his place. Westerveld has not played a match since Jurek Dudek took
over at Liverpool as no.1 choice and Coventry City's Chris Kirkland got
the job as 2nd choice for goalkeeping duties. |
| Overmars
injured again |
29 Oct 2001
|
| Barcelona's
Marc Overmars has picked up a knee injury in training which will keep him
on the sick list - just when he was ready to make a return after
being sick with a virus infection. It's unclear how long it wil be before
he's fit to play - he's already missed several weeks of match-action due
to the infection. |
| Hasselbaink
scores against Derby 1 - 1 |
28 Oct 2001
|
| Dutch
international striker Jerrel Hasselbaink scored in the 2nd half of a tough
match. Derby
started stronger than the South-London side and Fabrizio Ravanellid
the score for them in the 7th minute. Chelsea slowly got into the match
and Hasselbaink slid his goal away in the 48th minute - it earned Chelsea
a point. The rest of the match was played out in tense and irritated
circumstances, which threatened to boil over during a
heated and drawn out confrontation between Ravanelli and Desailly.
Ravanelli came soooo close in injury time to getting the match-winner but
it wasn't to be.

| Bergkamp
scores for Arsenal v. Mallorca |

|
| Hasselbaink
scores but Chelsea lose |
25 Oct 2001
|
| Jerrel
Hasselbaink scored but Chelsea had their first defeat of the season at the
hands/feet of lowly West Ham. A win would have taken them to within two
points of current Premier League leaders Leeds United but, instead, they have now
dropped to 7th place. Chelsea were 2 - 0 down within theng 15
minutes after goals from Michael Carrick (5th) and Frédéric Kanouté
(13th). Hasselbaink got one back in the 22nd but the South London club
failed to put away any more goals - the only good news is that the Dutch
international is now top scorer in the Premier League with 9 goals to his
name. |
| Van
Nistelrooy scores in C-L United win |
24 Oct 2001
|
| Man
United beat Olympiakos Pireaus 3 - 0 in last night's C-L encounter but
made their fans sweat while they waited to see some goals. Ruud van
Nistelrooy missed a penalty in the 65th minute (or rather, Dimitrios
Eleftheropoulos made a terrific save) but then provided substitute Ole
Gunnar Solskjær with a good through pass in the 79th to score theng
goal. Ryan Giggs scored the 2nd before Van Nistelrooy got a last minute
goal to make good his missed spot-shot.
|
| Kluivert
scores as Barça beat Lyon 2 - 3 |
24 Oct 2001

minute, Patrick Kluivert scored Barcelona's first goal in their 2 - 3 win
against Lyon in the Champions League. Rivaldo scored the 2nd in the 18th
and Gerard the 3rd in the 90th minute. |
| De
Boer gets goal, Melchiot red card |
19 Oct 2001
|
| Ronald
de Boer scored a goal as Glasgow Rangers beat Dynamo Moscow 3 - 1 in their
UEFA Cup match, Lorenzo Amoruso and Michael Ball scored the other
goals.
Chelsea went down 2 - 0 to Haepel
Tel Aviv. The home team were simply better on the night and Chelsea lacked
the ambition to win this one. They can count themselves lucky that their
goalie Mark Bosnich was in such good form or the score would have been
higher still. Mario Melchiot got a red card in the 53rd which left the
Londoners 'defending' the 0 - 0, which they did until the last two minutes
when Gershon put away a spot shot for 'hands' while Sergej Klasjenko got
the 2 - 0 in injury time.
|
| Vanenburg
ass.trainer at 1860 München |
18 Oct 2001
|
| Gerald
Vanenburg has been appointed assistant trainer at his old club 1860
München - he was a much loved striker with them, between July 1998 and
December 1999, and closed his career in Bavaria. The team's coach during
the last 9 years, Werner Lorant, was sacked at the weekend after a series
of poor results, culminating in a 1 - 5 defeat by rivals Bayern München
and is replaced by his assistant Peter Pacult. Vanenburg gained experience
coaching PSV's youth squad after a playing career with Ajax, PSV, Júbilo
Iwata, FC Utrecht and AS Cannes.

| Kluivert
scores, Barça go top of C-L group |
18 Oct 2001
|
| Dutch
international Patrick Kluivertd the score for Barcelona in their
Champions League match and was involved in his side's 2nd during their 2 -
1 win against Bayer Leverkusen. The German side were unbeaten in 15 games
and had won all 3 previous C-L games, until they entered Camp Nou that is!
Kluivert slid the 1st past Hans-Jörg Butt from a Saviola pass in the 12th
minute and Carsten Ramelow headed in the equalizer after 30 minutes play.
The 2nd Barça goal came after Kluivert's header and Saviola's rebound
were blocked successfully by Butt, only for Luis Enrique to slam the 2nd
rebound hard into the roof of the net for the 2 - 1.

| Phillip
Cocu set to return to PSV?? |
16 Oct 2001
|
| Phillip
Cocu could be set to make a return to his former club PSV when his current
contract with Barcelona runs out at the end of next season. It appears
that the Dutch international and chairman Harry van Raaij made an
agreement when Cocu left for Spain in 1998 that he could/would return to
Eindhoven when he was finished playing for Barça. In a recent meeting
between the two men they confirmed that the agreement is still valid and
we could be hearing shortly whether or not Cocu will indeed come back to
Holland. He played for the Dutch champions in the 1995/1996, 1996/1997 and
1997/1998 seasons. In total he's played 397 professional matches - 50 for
AZ, 137 for Vitesse, 97 for PSV and 113, so far, for Barcelona.

| Frank
de Boer moves to Rangers??!! |
13 Oct 2001
|
| Rumour
has it that Barcelona's Frank de Boer wants to join his brother Ronald at
Glasgow Rangers next season. The Dutch captain says that the stories are
false and that he intends to extend his contract with the Spanish club.
He's been negotiating a new deal for some time but has still to agree
terms with Barça and will be transfer-free if he's not signed on the
dotted line by January next year. Of course Rangers' coach Dick Advocaat
would be only too happy to get a free transfer of such an influential and
experienced player.

| Youri
Mulder to leave Schalke 04 |
12 Oct 2001
|
| Yuri
Mulder has been given permission by Schalke 04 to leave the German side
transfer-free. The 32 year-old striker has just regained fitness after a
series of injuries but has little chance of seeing much action now that
he's back (he's only played once for them so far this season). Manager
Rudi Assauer is full of praise for the contribution Mulder has made to the
club since he arrived there in 1993 (he's played 168 games, scoring 33
goals).

| Kluivert
helps Barcelona to beat Lyon |
11 Oct 2001
|
| Barcelona
started with Frank de Boer, Phillip Cocu and Patrick Kluivert in the
lineup plus Michael Reiziger on the bench. They had plenty of chances to
score but either missed them or had their attempts stopped by French
goalie Grégory Coupet. It took until the 78th minute before Kluivert
finally scored and Rivaldo put away a spot-shot for the 0 - 2, when the
Dutch striker was brought down, 3 minutes before time.

| Reuser
scores for Ipswich in League Cup |
10 Oct 2001
|
| Martijn
Reuser celebrated his return from injury by scoring 2 goals and helping
his club Ipswich Town into the 4th Round of the English League Cup. The
Dutch midfielder has been out of action with a thigh injury but was
showing no ill effects as hed the score at Crewe Alexander with a
goal in the 4th minute. He added a 2nd for the 1 - 3 halfway through the
2nd half, at which point Ipswich looked to be coasting to victory, but
Crewe quickly came back with a 2nd goal and fought hard right up to the
final whistle in an attempt to force the match into extra-time. |

08 Oct 2001
|
| Deportivo
la Coruña's Dutch
international striker Roy Makaay will be out of action for 4 weeks after
tearing a hamstring muscle when he blasted off a shot in Saturday's 2 - 1
win against Barcelona. The Spanish Primera División club had to miss the
striker for the first part of last season due to injury.

| €6.5
million Euro price for Westerveld |
04 Oct 2001
|
| Liverpool
have hung a €6.5 million Euro price-tag around Sander Westerveld's neck,
although the goalie expects that the club could well accept an offer of
€5 million Euros. Oranje's reserve keeper expects to find a club quickly
once the transfer market again for business in December and thinks
that Glasgow Rangers could well be interested in him. He's eligible to
play Champions League and UEFA Cup football which should make him a more
interesting purchase for a new employer. It's essential for him to find a
new club where he can get in some match-play a.s.a.p. (especially
after turning down a move on loan to Aláves) because otherwise
he'll lose his place with Oranje as well. |
| Willem
Korsten forced to end career |
04 Oct 2001
|
| Tottenham
Hotspur's Willem Korsten has been forced to end his career due to a
chronic hip injury. The 26 year-old made his debut for NEC in November
1992, moved to Vitesse in the summer of 1993, but a string of injuries
meant he only made 75 appearances for them in 5 years with the Arnhemmers.
In 1999 the former youth international went on loan to Leeds United and
the Spurs snapped him up after a mere 7 matches at Elland Road. He's only
made 23 appearances for the London club and the news that he's ending his
professional career is a blow to him as well as to manager Glenn Hoddle.

Nistelrooy scores as Man United win |
29 Sept 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy scored one of 5 goals Man United put past Tottenham Hotspur
in the 2nd half of the match at White Hart Lane after going 3 - 0 down
before the break. The "Red Devils" only had themselves to blame
for letting in 1st half goals by Dean Richards, Les Ferdinand and
Christian Ziege. Andy Cole headed in United's first after only 48 seconds
of the 2nd half, other headers followed from Laurent Blanc and Ruud van
Nistelrooy before Juan Sebastian Veron and David Beckham added two more to
complete the Spurs' misery.

16 Sept 2001

Hasselbaink scored twice as Chelsea won their London derby with Tottenham
Hotspur. In a match which saw a controversial penalty for
"The Blues", a red card for Frank Lampard and two goals in the
last 10 minutes it was a Marcel Desailly goal which finally clinched the
points for the south London side. Jerry Hasselbaink headed them into the
lead just before halftime, Teddy Sheringham equalized for Spurs and
Hasselbaink put them ahead again with a spot-shot after being brought
down. Sheringham scored his 2nd in the 90th to level the score before
Desailly got that injury time winner for the 3 - 2.

scores as Arsenal go top |
16 Sept 2001
|
| Fulham's
Edwin van der Sar was passed by fellow countryman Dennis Bergkamp
yesterday as 'Dennis the Menace' scored for "The Gunners" to
help lift the north London side into top-of-the-table position in the
Premier League. Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Bergkamp both started
on the bench while Frederik Ljungberg put Arsenal ahead but Steed
Malbranque equalized soon after the break as Fulham ralied. The south
London side went for a 2nd but Thierry Henry got there first with
Arsenal's 2nd in the 84th and substitute Bergkamp added a 3rd in injury
time to secure 3 points and pole position.
|
| Ruud
scores as Newcastle beat Man United |
15 Sept 2001
|
| Alex
Ferguson will not be pleased with the way his new Jaap Stam-less defence
shaped up against Newcastle United - they (Gary and Phil Neville, Wes
Brown, Blanc and keeper Fabien Barthez) looked as leaky as an old bucket.
Even the expensive midfielder Juan Veron wasn't up to fulfilling his
defensive duties. Laurent Robert put the Tyneside team ahead after only 5
minutes from a great freekick and it took Ruud van Nistelrooy to level the
score for "The Red Devils" in the 29th. It only lasted 5 minutes
though - Robert Lee blasted home from 20 metres to put the home side
ahead again. After the break Nikos Dabizas increased the gap and it took a
swap of Paul Scholes for Andy Cole to tip the balance more in the
Mancunians favour. Giggs and Veron scored to put them level again but Alan
Shearer added a 4th for Newcastle to give them the points 10 minutes
before time.

| Frank
de Boer back for Barcelona |
15 Sept 2001
|
| Frank
de Boer could well be finally back in action for Barcelona tomorrow
against Osasuna after sitting out his suspension for 'nadrolone abuse'. He
last turned out for his club in the closing Primera División match of
last season against Valencia which Barcelona won 3 - 2. His suspension ran
out at the end of August but the Dutch Captain was unable to turn out for
Oranje against Ireland due to an achilles injury - he's now fully
fit!

| Van
de Sar criticises Ferguson and Houlier |
14 Sept 2001
|
Fulham's
Edwin van der Sar has criticised Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson's
treatment of Jaap Stam and Liverpool manager Gérard Houllier's treatment
of Sander Westerveld. The Ducth international keeper is not the only
person who finds it difficult to understand the situation surrounding both
players at their respective clubs - David Icke at Football 365.com in
England (see http://www.football365.com/You_Say_We_say/
David_Icke_Column/story_4275.shtml) is also completely bemused by the
idea of buying two goalies, at the expense of Westerveld, and leaving the
talented youngster Chris Kirkland on the bench to waste. As
for Stam's story - well we have mixed feelings about that one. Oh, the
politics of football! |
| Overmars
misses match against Osasuna |
14 Sept 2001
|
| Marc
Overmars will miss Barcelona's match against Osasuna this coming Sunday
after the winger picked up a knee injury during Oranje's match against
Estonia. He's not fit enough to train with the squad but has resumed a
light training schedule and hopes to be fit in time for Tuesday's
Champions Legaue match against Fenerbahçe in Istanbul (the other teams in
Group F are Bayer Leverkusen and Olympique Lyon).

| Frank
de Boer wants to continue for Oranje |
13 Sept 2001
|
| Frank
de Boer has no plans to end his international career just yet and wants to
continue playing for Oranje, even though they're not going to the World
Cup. He will go on playing for them until he drops, he said on his
website, or until he's no longer wanted! The Dutch Captain is eligible to
play again (his suspension for 'nandrolone-abuse' has ended) and the
Barcelona midfielder is now on the road to recovery from his achilles
injury - he hopes to play for his club against Osasuna this Saturday. |
| Red
for Jerry - Arsenal v. Chelsea 1 - 1 |
09 Sept 2001
|
| Jerrel
"Jerry" Hesselbaink got a red card as Arsenal took on Chelsea in
the 129th episode of one of London's top derbies. Van Bronckhorst and
Bergkamp started for "The Gunners" while Ed de Goey, Jerrel
Hasselbaink and Boudewijn Zenden lined-up for "The Blues".
Thierry Henryd the score in the 16th but Hesselbaink put away a
penalty to even things up in the 31st and disappeared to the dressing room
for what looked like a harmless tussle with McKeown. Melchiot replaced
Zenden for the last few minutes of the match. |
| Van
Nistelrooy injured |
08 Sept 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy has picked up a knee injury during Holland's match against
Estonia last Wednesday. As luck will have it's the knee that kept him out
of action for most of last season that has been injured. He will be
replaced by either Andy Cole or Dwight Yorke during today's Premier League
meeting with Everton but Alex Ferguson hopes he'll be fit for the
Champions League match on Wednesday.

| Davids'
ban reduced to 4 months |
07 Sept 2001
|
| The
Italian football association have reduced the sentence of all the players
accused of nandrolone abuse to 4 months which means that Edgar Davids
(whose original ban was for 5 months) will be able to play for his club
Juventus again as of September 17th. The Dutch international and his legal
team remain unwilling to accept this latest verdict and are planning to
continue the fight to prove his innocence by taking their case to the
civil courts.

| Portsmouth
interested in John Karelse |
07 Sept 2001
|
| Portsmouth
Town are apparently interested in hiring Newcastle United's 3rd choice
goalie John Karelse. The Dutchman was brought to Newcastle in 1999 by Ruud
Gullit (after playing 385 games for NAC between 1987 and 1999) but has
been sidelined since Gullit's departure and has had to wait in line behind
Shay Given and Stephen Harper for a chance to play for the 1st team. The
First Division side have been looking for a new keeper since the beginning
of August when Aaron Flahavan died in a car-crash and are also looking at
Japanese keeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi from Yokohama Marinos.
|
| Davids
never failed doping test |
06 Sept 2001
|
| Edgar
Davids's legal team are boycotting the hearing in Rome of the Juventus and
Dutch international's appeal against his 5-month ban for nandrolone abuse.
They claim that the midfielder never actually failed the test following
the match against Udinese on March 4th and that he actually tested
negative for the banned substance (a finding which has been confirmed by
the Nederlands Meet Instituut). It looks as if Davids is the victim of the
current (over-)heated campaign against doping in Italy which is tarnishing
everyone with the same brush. According to his legal team the reports
which contain this surprising information have been available to the
relevant authorities in Italy for some time now but, due to the political
nature of the anti-doping campaign being waged throughout the sporting
world in Italy, they have not been made public.

| No
place for Westerveld at Liverpool |
05 Sept 2001
|
| Sander
Westerveld is furious after being pushed aside by Gerard Houllier in
favour of former Feyenoord goalie Jurek
Dudek. The Liverpool manager has
confirmed on 'The Reds' website that the Polish international is taking
over as no.1 goalie which leaves no place for Westerveld. The 2nd choice
will undoubtedly be the other new signing Chris Kirkland which leaves
Oranje's reserve keeper looking for a new club (he's already been offered
to Ipswich Town, West Ham United, Feyenoord and Ajax).

Liverpool move off, Zoetebier's too!! |
31 Aug 2001
|
| Liverpool
have called off the transfer of Feyenoord's Polish goalie Jurek Dudek
after a medical report came up with a problem which is sufficient for them
to call off the deal! They don't have the time to put the keeper through
another medical which leaves three disappointed keepers! Dudek because his
wish (to play in England hasn't come true again - his
move to Arsenal also fell through) Edwin Zoetebier (because he won't get
to play for Feyenoord) and Sander Westerveld (who was going to be replaced
by Dudek at Liverpool and looked set for a departure) - how will he be
feeling?.
|
| Westerveld
considers future at Liverpool |
31 Aug 2001
|
| Jurek
Dudek is obviously going to be Gerard Houllier's 1st choice for
goalkeeping duties at Liverpool which leaves Sander Westerveld considering
his future with "The Reds". During preparations for the
Amsterdam Tournament his agent was told that Westerveld would have to
improve during the coming months or else! Oranje's reserve goalie then put
in a terrific performance in the Charity Shield Cup against Manchester
United - several excellent saves earned him the "Man of the
Match" award! So the sudden arrival of Dudek has caught him by
surprise and, although he says he's going to fight for his place in the
team, it's seems more likely that Liverpool will try to sell him as
quickly as possible. His agent hasn't received any offers yet but
Westerveld's name has already been linked in the English press with Ajax! |
| Davids
banned for 5 months |
29 Aug 2001
|
| The
Italian Football Association have finally reached their decision and
banned Edgar Davids from playing for 5 months. The verdict comes after the
Italian Olympic committee (CONI) recommended a 3-month ban which would
have allowed the Juventus midfielder to play against Ireland on Saturday
in the all-important World Cup qualifier. His legal team still regard the
ban-reduction (from 8 to 5 months) as a victory because of the fact that
tougher 'punishments' are the rule, rather than the exception, in Italy.
Davids will undoubtedly appeal but will in any case be able to play again
from October 17th.
|
| Davids
could play against Ireland |
29 Aug 2001
|
| The
Italian Olympic committee 'CONI' has advised the Italian Football
Association to cut Edgar Davids original provisional ban of 8 months for
'nandrolone' abuse to 3 months, which would allow him to play on Saturday
against Ireland! They appear to have accepted the Dutch international's
argument that a homeopathic preparation he was using could have elicited
the positive reaction in the nadrolone test carried out earlier this year.
It's expected that the Italian FA will follow CONI's advice and formal
confirmation is awaited with bated breath by the Oranje squad who've just
arrived at their training camp in Hoenderloo.

| Westerveld
blunder as Liverpool lose |
28 Aug 2001
|
| A
bit-of-a-blunder by goalie Sander Westerveld cost Liverpool the match at
Bolton last night. It's hardly surprising that he made such a mistake (the
breaking news of a possible move by his club for Feyenoord's Jurek Dudek
was bound to be on his mind, in the back of it etc) but the defeat wasn't
all his fault! His teammates were putting on a poor show in Bolton's new
stadium and, after a scrappy high-speedng, the home team settled
down to outplay the UEFA Cup winners! An impressive Michael Ricketts
scored the well-deservedr in the 27th, Emile Heskey got the
equalizer but Westerveld's mistake let Dean Holdsworth's shot in and
Bolton are now enviably in pole position in the Premier League with three
consecutive wins!

| 'Misunderstood'
Stam signs for Lazio |
27 Aug 2001
|
| Jaap
Stam has signed a contract with Lazio Roma till 2005 after being pushed
aside by Manchester United. The Dutch international defender is rather
bemused and surprised by the English champions' sudden decision to sell
him while also finding it difficult to understand all the commotion that's
surrounded the publication of his book "Head to Head". The fact
that Alex Ferguson has recently been fielding Ronny Johnsen and Wesley
Brownman in preference to the former PSV player must also be a
contributing factor in "The Reds" decision. It is, in any case,
difficult to believe that Stam is so naive as to think that he could go
public in the way he has with some of the stories included and not have
some stones thrown at him! His move takes place just in time to register
him for the Champions League where he can look forward to playing his old
team PSV. |
| Liverpool
want Dudek a.s.a.p. |
27 Aug 2001
|
| Liverpool
are prepared to pay Feyenoord €9 million Euros for Polish international
Jurek Dudek and want to seal the deal as quickly as possible - they have
to register him by the end of August if he's to play for them in the
Champions League! The keeper was left waiting at the 'altar-of-contracts'
by Arsenal earlier this year but now looks set to join the UEFA Cup (and
European SuperCup) winners where he can expect to sign a contract for 5
years. His replacement in the Kuip is already lined up - the Rotterdammers
are expected to pay NAC €4 million Euros for their Hungarian goalkeeping
talent Gabor Babos! You may well ask what Liverpool want with Dudek when
they already have a top class goalie in Dutchman Sander Westerveld (who's
helped them win the FA Cup, the League Cup, the UEFA Cup and the SuperCup
in the last year!!!) and Oranje's reserve keeper is undoubtedly asking
himself the same question!!??!! |
| Kluivert
gets two for Barcelona |
27 Aug 2001
|
| Patrick
Kluivert scored twice as Barcelona beat Sevilla FC in their first match of
the Spanish season. He's obviously showing good form as the World Cup
qualifier against Ireland on Saturday 1st September draws closer. Barça,
with Kluivert, Marc Overmars and Phillip Cocu in the lineup,d the
score in the 43rd minute - Kluivert tapped the ball away under the keeper.
Sevilla drew level after the break and the match could have gone either
way until Kluivert struck again in the 75th minute with a brilliant piece
of solo work, beating 3 defenders before slamming the ball into the top
corner from 16 metres. |
| Stam
off to Lazio? |
25 Aug 2001
|
| It
looks as if Jaap Stam is leaving Manchester United to join Lazio Roma -
a clash with Alex Ferguson over the Dutch international's book (which has
caused a lot of commotion both at the club and elsewhere with its stories
of 'secret' meetings and 'negative' remarks) has undoubtedly led to the
'surprise' announcement. The Italian club are believed to have offered
€25 million Euros for the player who joined the Mancunians from PSV in
1998, has played 79 league matches for them and scored just once. |
| Bergkamp/Van
Bronckhorst in Gunners' 11 |
25 Aug 2001
|
| After
being brought on as substitutes for the 1st two matches of the season,
Dennis Bergkamp and Giovanni van Bronckhorst have finally had the chance
to start the match for Arsenal. "The Gunners" were far too
strong for Leicester City - Fredrik Ljunbergd the score after
15 minutes, Wiltord added a 2nd in the 28th, Henry and Kanu (replacing
Bergkamp in the 75th) scored 2nd half goals to make it a 0 - 4 win. |

scores against Southampton |
25 Aug 2001
|
| Jerrel
Hasselbaink scored as Chelsea beat Southampton 0 - 2 at their new St.
Mary's Stadium in front of 32.000 disappointed fans. The London club,
including Ed de Goeij, Mario Melchiot, Boudewijn Zenden and Hasselbaink,
put on a poor performance but still managed to win. "Jimmy
Floyd", as he's known in England, headed in a Graeme Le Saux pass
which goalie Paul Jones misread. Mario Stanic tapped in a Frank Lampard
pass in the dying seconds to make it 0 - 2. |
| Frank
de Boer won't play against Ireland |
24 Aug 2001
|
| Frank
de Boer has had to accept that he won't be fit in time for the World Cup
qualifier against Ireland in Dublin on September 1st. He's picked up an
achilles heel injury and, although he's been training again, a simple
sprint still causes too much pain. This, together with the fact that he's
missed so many matches since his ban resulting from the 'nandrolone
affair', makes it highly unlikely he'll be picked to play against Ireland.
It's a huge disappointment for the Dutch captain who'd been looking
forward to playing a 'real' match again after only being 'allowed' to take
part in a couple of friendlies! |
| Bergkamp/Van
Bronckhorst but Gunners lose |
08 Aug 2001
|
| Dennis
Bergkamp and Giovanni van Bronckhorst were both brought on as substitutes
in the 2nd half but couldn't stop Leeds from going home with the
points and the match ended 1 - 2. The game began with plenty of furious
action but degenerated into a tough confrontation with too many yellow
cards. Leeds went ahead from an Ian Harte freekick but Sylvain Wiltord
headed in the 1st half equalizer. Leeds dominated the 2nd half, Australian
Mark Viduka impressing the most, as "The Gunners" became
increasingly desperate. The fouls accumulated and two Leeds players were
sent off (Bowyer and Mills) as tempers flared, self-control went out of
fashion and the art-of-football was forgotten in the battle for the
points. The Dutch-duo were finally brought on but couldn't turn things
around for the Lodon club! |

Ruud" scores twice against Fulham |
20 Aug 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy scored twice in an impressive Premier League debut for
Manchester United against Fulham, beating fellow countryman and
international Edwin van der Sar to give the Mancunians victory. The
South-London side began the match in furious fashion and it was only 4
minutes before Frenchman Louis Saha found the back of the net with a
terrific lob over the head of Fabien Barthez. David Beckham scored the
equalizer from a freekick in the 35th minute, the ball bouncing in from
the underneath of the crossbar. Saha put the Londoners ahead again with
his 2nd goal after the break before "Van the Man" (as the
English insist on calling him) struck twice in the 51st and 53rd minutes,
pouncing on two rebounds to earn 3 points for "The Red Devils". |
| Substitute
Bergkamp scores twice |
19 Aug 2001
|
| Dennis
Bergkamp scored twice within three minutes in the last part of Arsenal's 0
- 4 win at Middlesborough - he was joined on the bench by new signing
Giovanni Bronckhorst. "The Gunners" didn't have to work hard for
their (on paper) impressive win (although a couple of excellent David
Seaman saves helped considerably) and even managed it with ten men after Ray
Parlour was sent off. |
| Mols
gets 3 match suspension from FIFA |
18 Aug 2001
|
| Glasgow
Rangers' Michael Mols has been handed out a 3 match suspension by FIFA for
his red card in the match against Fenerbahçe. The Dutch striker 'saw red'
after only 11 minutes of play when he reacted to provocations by Ghanian
Samuel Johnson and lashed out with his foot! Rangers had assumed he'd
receive an automatical one match suspension and are now considering an
appeal. |
| Reiziger
out for a month |
18 Aug 2001
|
| Dutch
international Michael Reiziger had to leave the pitch injured after only
12 minutes of play during the match against Parma in the final of the Joan
Gamper Tournament. He's torn a muscle and will be out of action for a
month which means he'll also miss Holland's World Cup qualifier against
Ireland on September 1st. |
| Twente
hire Verlinden to Eendracht Aalst |
17 Aug 2001
|
| Twente
and Belgian side Eendracht Aalst have reached agreement on a one-year hire
contract which sees 24 year-old defender Jan Verlinden go south for the
coming season. He joined the "Tukkers" from KV Mechelen in 1999
but failed to become a regular face in Enschede and spent last season on
hire to Lierse SK. |
| Petta
out for 4 - 6 weeks |
17 Aug 2001
|
| Bobby
Petta will be out of action for 4 - 6 weeks after picking up a hamstring
injury in the last training session before Oranje's friendly against
England yesterday. The Celtic midfielder will miss the return of the
Champions League qualifier against Ajax in Glasgow as well as missing out
on yet another chance to make his debut for Holland in their World Cup
qualifier against Ireland on September 1st. |
| Bobby
Petta misses out on debut again |
15 Aug 2001
|
| Bobby
Petta is missing out once more on the chance to make his debut for Oranje.
The Celtic left-half has pulled out at the last moment with a hamstring
injury picked up in training yesterday. He'll be doubly disappointed when
he was certain to play this time round due to Marc Overmars' injury after
missing out before himself due to injuries. The left-footer started as 18
year-old with Feyenoord but didn't develop as expected but, after spells
with Dordrecht '90, RKC Waalwijk and Ipswich Town, has finally
blossomed in Glasgow! |

| Rangers
give Advocaat 'blank cheque' |
14 Aug 2001
|
| Glasgow
Rangers have given trainer/manager Dick Advocaat a cheque for €9 million
Euros to buy a couple of new players. There are so many players
unavailable for training/playing that it has become necessary to look
around for reinforcements. Rangers are already two points behind
arch-rivals Celtic and will not want to see the gap widen much further at
this early stage of the season if they want to seriously challenge the
Triple Champions. |
| Van
der Sar wanted to sign for Ajax |
14 Aug 2001
|
| Edwin
van der Sar has told Dutch daily "De Telegraaf" that he would
have been happy to have signed for Ajax. He thought that the
Amsterdammers' bid of €2,27 million Euros was a bit of an insult to
Juventus. Although many see his move to newly promoted Fulham as a step
down he is, himself, convinced that it could prove to be a better decision
than the one he took in moving to Juventus. He went to Italy in the
search for medals and has left with none! |
| Red
card for Hasselbaink - ban to follow? |
13 Aug 2001
|
| Chelsea's
Jerrell Hasselbaink has been shown a red card during his team's friendly
against Udinese for an offence against Valerio Bertotto. The English FA is
waiting to see the Italian FA's report before deciding whether the Dutch
international will be receiving a match suspension for up to 3 matches.
Bad news for the London club as the Premier League season gets underway. |
| Cocu
scores but Barça lose to Blackburn |
13 Aug 2001
|
| Barça
lost their first game in 8 pre-season friendlies against Blackburn 3 - 2.
Despite going ahead through Phillip Cocu's 18th minute goal they looked
less than convincing, especially in defence. Gary Flitcroft (29th) and
David Dunn (42nd) put the recently relegated English side ahead and, in
the 2nd half, Xavi drew the Spanish side level in the 75th but veteran
Mark Hughes got the match-winner in the 81 st minute. |
| Makaay
scores in Deportivo la Coruña win |
13 Aug 2001
|
| Luis
Figod the score for Real Madrid in the final of the pre-season
Teresa Herrera Trophy tournament but Ducth international Roy Makaay scored
an equalizer in the 51st minute. A goal by Diego Tristán in the 74th
minute gave Deportivo victory, the trophy and sent Real a warning that
they can expect plenty of competition from Spain's no.2 club. |
| Arie
Haan sacked at Austria Wien |
13 Aug 2001
|
| Despite
a 2 - 1 win against arch-rivals Rapid Wien, Austria Wien's trainer Arie
Haan and his assistant Ernst Baumeister have been sacked and replaced by
Walter Hörmann and Toni Pfeiffer. Haan took over at the Austrian side in
March 2001 after having been trainer with FC Antwerp, Anderlecht, VfB
Stuttgart, 1.FC Nürnberg, Standard Liège, PAOK Saloniki, Feyenoord,
Anderlecht, Paok Saloniki, Paniliakos and Omonia Nicosia. |
| Westerveld
in top form as Liverpool win |
12 Aug 2001
|
| Sander
Westerveld was in terrific form today, amd he was named "Man of the
Match", as Liverpool won the
English Charity Shield 2 - 1 in Cardiff's Millenium Stadium. The UEFA Cup
winners went ahead after less than a minute's play when a penalty was
awarded against captain Roy Keane which veteran Gary McAllister calmly put
passed Fabio Barthez. 'Mr. Quicksilver' David Owen scored the 2nd goal
in the 17th minute as Liverpool dominated the 1st half. Manchester United
fought back on all cylinders after the break and came close to scoring
several times before Ruud van Nistelrooy finally got one passed his
compatriot Westerveld. Despite coming close with shots from Keane (who had
one bounce off the bar), Beckham and Van Nistelrooy, luck didn't smile on
United here in Cardiff whereas for Liverpool it's becoming a bit of a
home-away-from-home. |

| Konterman
scores two for Glasgow Rangers |
12 Aug 2001
|
| Bert
Konterman may have made little impression last season for Glasgow Rangers,
after joining the club from Feyenoord, but looks to be in better form this
time around. The 30 year-old defender scored two goals against Dunfermline
in Rangers' 4 - 1 win last night. After Russel Latapy (13th) and Tore
Andre Flo (17th) put away 1st half goals he headed in his team's 3rd in
the 47th minute and blasted in a freekick missile 8 minutes before time. |
| Frank
de Boer misses England friendly? |
12 Aug 2001
|
| Frank

left the pitch during Barcelona's friendly against Derby County last
Friday with an achilles injury. It's causing him considerable pain and
threatens to become a chronic problem if it remains untreated. |

| Kluivert
and Rivaldo score all Barça goals |
09 Aug 2001
|
| Patrick
Kluivert is forming a deadly duo with Rivaldo at Barcelona. The Brazilian
striker already proved his value to the Spanish side at the end of last
season when he put away 3 goals against Valencia in the last match of the
season to give Barça a place in the qualifying rounds of the Champions
League. Last night he scored another hattrick against Polish side Wisla
Kraków to give his team a 3 - 4 win in Poland. Kluivert provided Rivaldo
with his first (by providing him with a penalty), scored the 3rd goal
himself and assisted in Rivaldo's last goal of the evening! |
| Frank
de Boer plays against England |
08 Aug 2001
|
| FIFA
have given the KNVB (Dutch FA) permission to field Frank de Boer in the
friendly against England on August 15th. The Dutch Captain received a
reduced two-month ban for failing a dope test
earlier this year which
should have kept him out of action until the the beginning of September
but he's being allowed to play this match because it is a friendly. |
| Jordi
Cruijff ready for action |
08 Aug 2001
|
| Jordi
Cruijff is practically 100% match-fit again after suffering from a
niggling ankle injury all summer. It's not a serious problem but it has
been causing him pain and has meant he's had to be extra careful in order
not to aggravate the injury. It's expected that he'll be able to play for
Alavés in their coming friendly against English Premier League side
Bolton Wanderers. |
| Van
Lent gets 2 but Borussia still lose |
06 Aug 2001
|
| Kaiserslautern
clambered back from the edge of what looked like being a 0 - 2 defeat to
get 3 goals in the last 20 minutes (one from a penalty) and earned
themselves 3 points. Arie van Lent had put away two goals for Borussia Mönchengladbach
in the 52nd and 61st minutes and was well on his way to being Man of the
Match. "Die Roten Teufel" had other ideas and came back with a
Mario Basler goal in the 67th, a penalty put away by Harry Koch in the
last minute and an injury time match-winner from Hany Ramzy. |
| Bobby
Petta misses Ajax - Celtic |
06 Aug 2001
|
| Celtic's
former Feyenoord Bobby Petta picked up a hamstring injury in Saturday's
league meeting with Kilmarnock (where he had to leave the pitch after only
19 minutes) and looks certain to miss the first leg of the Champions
League qualifier against Ajax in Amsterdam on Wednesday. The 26 year-old
wing-back has been plagued by injury last season in theScotland and also
missed out on a chance to make his debut for Oranje. |
| De
Vogt signs for Sheffield United |
05 Aug 2001
|
| Wilko
de Vogt will be keeping goal for English First Division side Sheffield
United next season. NAC's 25 year-old reserve goalie had tried out for
the English club in April but they had doubts about his fitness after
which he had a trial with Utrecht but failed their medical. The Yorkshire
club seem to changed their minds now and have given him a contract for one
season. |
| Edgar
Davids probably banned for 8 months |
04 Aug 2001
|
| Dutch
international Edgar Davids looks likely to be banned from playing for
Juventus for 8 months after the Italian Olympic committee CONI advised the
Italian FA to suspend the midfielder for testing positive for nandrolone.
The ban is effective as of the date of the original doping test (March 4th
2001) which means that he should be back in action by the 4th of December.
According to stories circulating in the Italian press there was also
another banned substance found in the player's urine but whether this is
true remains to be seen! |
| Edgar
Davids can play some friendlies |
03 Aug 2001
|
| Edgar
Davids, currently banned by the Italian FA from playing in the Serie A,
and by FIFA from appearing in Dutch internationals, has been given
permission to play some friendlies for his club Juventus. It's small
consolation for the harassed midfielder who's still waiting to hear what
the other 'crimes' are that he's supposed to have committed, as
hinted at in recent days by FIFA boss Seph Blatter. |
| Celtic
want Winston Bogarde |
04 Aug 2001
|
| Celtic
have approached Chelsea for the services of left-footed defender Winston

Milan, FC Barcelona and Chelsea. The Londoners are willing to let him go -
let's hope he gets to play more often for the Scottish Champions! |

Crete try out Veenhof |
03 Aug 2001

himself a contract - he's currently club-less! The 32 year-old central
defender played for Groningen between 1988 and 1998 before going to
Japanese side NTT Kanto for two seasons. He's been keeping fit with SC
Heerenveen and jumped at the chance, when asked by OFI trainer Rob
Groener, to play a friendly for the Crete side against his former employer
Groningen. |

| Liverpool
miss Westerveld |
03 Aug 2001
|
| Liverpool's
Dutch goalie Sander Westerveld will be out of action for the coming weeks
and will miss several important matches. He's certain to miss next week's
Champions League qualifier against Maccabi Haifa, almost definitely the
battle for the Charity Shield on August 11th and perhaps even the start of
the new Premier League season in England on August 18th. He picked up a
thigh injury in Liverpool's friendly against Thailand, missed out on the
matches against Valencia and Ajax in the Amsterdam Tournament and will
obviously miss today's friendly against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The
injury is taking longer than expected to heal and he's not even able to
train, which is making it imperative for manager Gérard Houllier to find
another top keeper a.s.a.p. The target is Coventry City's Chris Kirkland,
regarded one of England's most promising talents! |
| Blatter
accuses Davids |
02 Aug 2001
|
| FIFA
boss Joseph Blatter has said that the Dutch international Edgar
Davids is under suspicion of more than just using the banned substance
nandrolone! He's not giving any details, saying that the Italian
football association's report includes damning evidence. Davids' lawyer
Robert Geerlings has reacted angrily - there's no truth whatsoever in the
new accusations! The player's dietary supplements have all been analysed
and come up clean except for one particular homeopathic medicine which
contained an ingredient that could give a similar positive result when
tested for nandrolone. |
| Ruud
gets two as The Reds lose to Celtic |
02 Aug 2001
|
| Manchester
United played against Glasgow Celtic yesterday evening and lost 3 - 4 in a
testimonial for Ryan Giggs. The result is a warning to Ajax who face the
Scottish Champions in a Champions League qualifier next week. "The
Reds" were already 2 goals down after only 5 minutes play - Chris
Sutton and Neil Lennon the scorers. Ruud van Nistelrooy closed the gap a
little before the break with his first of the evening but the visitors
increased their lead in the 2nd half when Chris Lambert fired in a shot
from just outside the area. New signing Veron got United's 2nd with a
powerful, high shot but substitute Moravcik added a 4th for the Glasgow
team from a direct freekick. 'Our Ruud' added his 2nd but time ran out on
United and the better team won! The fans were rewarded with an
entertaining match and doubly so by the surprise substitute (and Mancunian
of the Century) Eric Cantona who showed that, although he's put on some
weight, the old magic is still there!! Giggs will be pleased as well with
the reward for his ten years service to the club - he picks up the night's
profits, said to be a cool €1.59 million Euros - not bad for one night's
work!!!! |
| Zenden
set to sign for Chelsea |
02 Aug 2001
|
| Barcelona's
Dutch international Boudewijn Zenden is set to sign for London side
Chelsea after the two clubs agreed a transfer fee of €12 million Euros.
He's been unhappy at Camp Nou for some time after a move to Lazio Roma
fell through last summer and has only played 10 matches for the Spanish
side last season. He wants a return to regular action with a top club,
especially with next year's World Cup in sight, and had already turned
down offers from Newcastle United and Ajax. Parma and Lazio were also
interested in him, while Lyon were recent favourites to do a deal with the
left-winger and will be disappointed that he's not chosen to sign for
them. It had looked for a while as if the Chelsea move would not go
through, after rumours circulated that he'd insulted the London side by saying that
he would have preferred a move to Italy last summer, but all has been forgiven now
and he looks set to join fellow Dutchmen Jerrel Hesselbaink, Mario
Melchiot, Winston Bogarde and Ed de Goey at "The Blues". |
| Van
der Sar signs for Fulham!!! |
01 Aug 2001
|
| Dutch
international goalie, and unwanted Juventus keeper, Edwin van der Sar has
signed a contract for four years with newly promoted English Premier
Division side Fulham. The news comes as somewhat of a surprise but the
former Ajax keeper is impressed with the South London club's ambitions and
plans for the future. He's talked with trainer Jean Tigana and is
convinced that he can achieve the same kind of success for Fulham he did
with AS Monaco. Plus with the financial power of owner Mohamed El Fayed
behind them there is obviously plenty of money to take the team to the top
of the Premier League if it's combined with the right kind of footballing
vision! |
| Brits
bet on Van Nistelrooy and Hesselbaink |
01 Aug 2001
|
| The
betting crazy Brits are gambling that either Ruud van Nistelrooy or Jerrel
Hesselbaink will be the Premier League's top scorers next season! It's not
much of a surprise when you consider the fact that Hesselbaink crowned his
return to the Premier League by becoming top scorer and putting away 23
goals for Chelsea - he was also top scorer when he put away 18 goals for
Leeds United in 1998/99. Van the Man, as the English like to call
'our Ruud', is currently the most expensive striker in England and was top
scorer in Holland twice before being put out of action through injury! |

| Numan
injured, misses Maribor match |
31 July 2001
|
| Glasgow
Rangers defender Arthur Numan has picked up a groin injury in theng
match of the Scottish season against Aberdeen. He's been into hospital for
an examination and will now miss the return of the Champions League
qualifier against Maribor - to play would only aggravate the injury! |
| Van
der Sar returns to Juventus |
31 July 2001
|
| Edwin
van der Sar has returned to Juventus (where
he's no longer wanted) after the Italian club rejected an offer by the
Ducth international goalie's former club Ajax to buy him for €2,3
million Euros. The 30 year-old had been keeping
fit with amateurs Katwijk while the talks between the Amsterdammers
and the Italians took place. |
| Odd
Grenland want to keep Van Ankeren |
30 July 2001
|
| Odd
Grenland are very happy with the performance of Edwin van Ankeren and want
to offer the striker a long-term contract. The
32 year-old has been playing for them on a contract for 4 months since
April and has scored 6 goals in 10 matches for them. He's feeling
quite at home in Norway and would like to stay but he has already signed
with Belgian side Molenbeek for the coming season. They are willing to let
him go, however, and are already negotiating a price with the Norwegian
club. |
| Kluivert

30 July 2001
|
| Patrick

against Lucerne in friendly match. The Catalan club's new Brazilian
signing Geovanni scored the third. |
| Van
Nistelrooy gets substituted |
30 July 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy was substituted in Manchester United's last game of their
Asian tour against a tough Thailand team. He had two shots saved by their
goalie Meesathum and Ryan Giggs finallyd the score. Four minutes
later the Thais equalized and it took substitute Dwight Yorke to get the
match-winner a quarter of an hour before time. Raimond van der Gouw (who's
become 3rd choice goalie with "The Reds" after their purchase of
Northern Ireland keeper Roy Carroll) made a 2nd half appearance in goal. |
| Wenger
would like to sell Bergkamp |
30 July 2001
|
| Dennis
Bergkamp's place with Arsenal is under threat now that Arsène Wenger
would like to sell the 32 year-old striker. He's costing the London club
€56,000 Euros a week and the club would like to use that money to buy up
and coming talent Francis Jeffers. The former Dutch international extended
his contract with "The Gunners" only 6 months ago and has no
intention of leaving the club where he wants to end his career and
will fight 'tooth and nail' to hold onto his place in the team. |
| Van
der Sar trains with Katwijk |
29 July 2001
|
| Edwin
van der Sar has been training with amateurs Katwijk while he awaits an
offer to join a new club after being dropped by Juventus. The Dutch
international and former Ajax keeper is keeping himself fit and we hope he
finds a new and appreciative employer a.s.a.p. He's
been linked with a return to Ajax recently but it remains unclear
whether there's any substance to the stories. |
| Dutch
Abroad Roundup |
29 July 2001
|
| Two
Dutchmen have got their respective clubs off to a fine start in the new
seasons which have alreadyd in Germany and Scotland. Arie van
Lent put away the only goal of the match to give newly promoted Borussia
Mönchengladbach victory against Bayern München. In Scotland Jack
de Gier scored two goals in his new club Dunfermline Athletic's
5 - 2 win against Motherwell. |
| De
Boer's sentence cut to two months!! |
28 July 2001
|
| In
a remarkable move UEFA's appeals committee has reduced Frank de Boer's
original ban of 12 months, for testing positive
for Nandrolone, to two months. It was rumoured beforehand that there
was possibly going to be a severe reduction in the 'sentence'. The
pannel indeed proved sympathetic towards the arguments put forward by the
Dutch international's legal "A-Team". Their verdict comes as a
great relief to the Barcelona defender and is a piece of much needed good
news for the Dutch national team, "Oranje", who face Ireland in
an all-important World Cup qualifier on September 1st. The ban runs from
July 1st to August 31st which means that the Dutch Captain will be able to
play - business as usual! His agent Rob Cohen has threatened to go to
court now to reveal the unprofessional unreliability of the laboratories
used to test for drugs and sue for compensation. In the meantime Edgar
Davids' legal team are still waiting to hear the response of the Italian
FA to their case - a case of no news is good news?! |
| Van
der Sar training with Ajax? |
28 July 2001
|
| Rumour
has it that Edwin van der Sar has been seen training with Ajax and that
the Amsterdammers have offered Juventus €7,24 million Euros for the
Dutch international. The
former Ajax keeper has fallen out of favour in Italy but his club
could be holding out for a fee of circa €4,82 miilion Euros! |
| Kluivert
and Reiziger sign new contracts |
26 July 2001
|
| Patrick
Kluivert and Barcelona have finally signed a new contract, after months of
haggling and arguments, which should keep the Dutch international
striker with the Spanish club till 2006. Noone is saying anything about
the amount of money involved, although he had been demanding €4.1
million Euros in wages per year (!!), not taking into account his
bonusses, while the club were offering a mere €3,05 million (!!). His
Dutch colleague Michael Reiziger has also extended his contract till 2005
with the Catalan club, who can now breathe a sigh of relief because both
players could have left transfer-free next summer if the new deals had not
been signed. |
| Westerveld
absent in Amsterdam |
25 July 2001
|
| Fans
of Liverpool's Dutch goalkeeper Sander Westerveld will be disappointed
that he will not be taking part in Ajax's Summer Tournament which
kicks-off tomorrow. The keeper has picked up a thigh injury during a
friendly in Thailand and will miss out on the action in the ArenA. Another
familiar face will be playing though - Jari Litmanen can be seen in
action after having only played 5 matches during his first season with
Liverpool due to a series of injury problems. |
| Van
Nistelrooy scores again in Asia |
24 July 2001
|
| Manchester
United's Ruud van Nistelrooy has scored once more for his new club in his
2nd appearance for "The Reds" during a friendly against
Singapore. His team won 8 - 1, the other scorers were Ole Gunnar Solksjær
(2), Philip Neville, David Beckham, Dwight Yorke (2) and Ryan Giggs. |
| Van
Nistelrooy scores two in debut |
23 July 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy has scored two goals in his debut match for Manchester
United during a friendly against an AllStar team in Malaysia. It took him
only 7 minutes to put away his first for "The Reds", his 2nd
came in the 36th. The other goals in the 6 - 0 win came from David
Beckham, Andy Cole, Luke Chadwick and Nicky Butt. |
| Man
United interested in Patrick Kluivert |
18 July 2001
|
| After
earlier approaches by Juventus, Internazionale, Chelsea Liverpool,
and Real Madrid, Manchester United are the
latest to join the queue of clubs who would like to add Patrick Kluivert
to their squad! They have made an official approach to his agent Sigi Lens
with an offer to buy the Barcelona and Dutch international striker! Lens
has been trying to negotiate a contract extension with the Spanish club after
months of doubt as to whether Kluivert would stay or go! 'The Reds'
would be only too happy to snap him up when his contract runs out in June
2002. |
| Spurs
want Clarence Seedorf |
18 July 2001
|
| Spurs
chairman David Buchler has made public his club's desire to sign Clarence
Seedorf - they have offered Internazionale €16 million Euros to bring
the Dutch international to London. It's well known that the 25 year-old
former Ajax, Sampdoria and Real Madrid midfielder would like a move to the
English Premier League so a deal could well be on the cards! It looks
as though he's not going to Olympic Marseille after all! |
| Comeback
for Rangers' Michael Mols |
17 July 2001
|
| Glasgow
Rangers Michael Mols is yet again trying to fully regain match fitness after
putting several more months of injury, and a 3rd knee-operation,
behind him. He made a 2nd half appearance in Sunday's friendly against
Cagen, his first team appearance since February (when he got a red
card in the Scottish Cup semi-final clash with Celtic). A careful comeback
is still planned for the striker, by coach Dick Advocaat, in the hope that
he will finally make a long-term return to match football after being hit
by injury in a clash with Oliver Kahn in 1999. |
| Chelsea
no longer interested in Zenden |
16 July 2001
|
| Chelsea
have announced that they are no longer interested in signing Barcelona's
Boudewijn Zenden. The Dutch international has apparently insulted the
London Premier League club by saying that he'd rather sign for a Serie A
team (implying that the Stamford Bridge side are not a 'top club') and
that, as far as he's concerned, Chelsea are 2nd choice material. |
| Ricksen
uninterested in Ajax move |
16 July 2001
|
| According
to reports in the Scottish press, Glasgow Rangers' Fernando Ricksen has
turned down an offer to move to back to Holland and play for Ajax. The 23
year-old defender began his career in 1993 with Fortuna Sittard and moved
to Rangers (where Dick Advocaat is in charge) in the summer of 2000. He's
played 27 matches for them (scoring once) but is no longer certain of a
place in the 1st team. |
| Van
der Sar linked to Ajax? |
16 July 2001
|
| There
are plenty of rumours circulating in the Italian press regarding the
future of Dutch international goalie Edwin van der Sar,
now that he's no longer wanted or needed by Juventus. There is a
possibility that he could be considering a return to Ajax and that the two
clubs have already done a deal Whether or not there is any substance to
these rumours is something else, of course, but (now that Barcelona and
Liverpool have been ruled out as likely candidates) we should soon hear
what his plans are!! |
| Gullit
to coach Cameroen? |
14 July 2001
|
| According
to French sports magazine L'Eguipe, Ruud Gullit is an important candidate
(the other candidate being former FC Nantes trainer Jean-Claude Suaudeau)
for the job of
national coach of West African Cameroen's national team during the World Cup of 2002. He's already
been in talks about the job but the former Dutch international, who's also coached Chelsea and
Newcastle United, is perhaps asking a lot more money than they can afford. If the deal goes through (which always remains to be
seen) he will be replacing Robert Corfu as coach of the "Untameable
Lions" who won the African Cup last year and a gold medal at the
Sydney Olympics! |
| Zenden
to sign for Chelsea? |
14 July 2001
|
| Newcastle
United recently made an offer of €13 million Euros for Barcelona's
Boudewijn Zenden, only the winger wasn't interested in a move to 'The
Magpies'. The Dutch international wants a club that will be playing
European football. English Premier League club Chelsea look more likely to
succeed in persuading him to join them, with their offer of circa. €12
million Euros, as the London side will be in Europe next season.
His father Pierre Zenden has said that there will be a decision made
during the coming week. |
| FIFA
ban for Frank de Boer |
14 July 2001
|
| In
a surprising move FIFA have handed out a one-year suspension to Frank de
Boer, confirming UEFA's earlier ban (for failing a doping
test) and he
will now miss playing for Oranje in their crucial World Cup qualifiers
against Ireland, in Dublin on September 1st, and against Estonia on
September 5th. The decision to ban the Dutch captain, only two weeks
before his appeal against UEFA's ban is to be heard on July 26th, was a
totally unexpected blow for the De Boer camp as it is usual for FIFA to
wait until an appeal against a UEFA ban has been heard! Are there any
politics going on here? |
| Van
der Sar wants to leave Juventus |
12 July 2001
|
| Dutch
international goalie Edwin van der Sar is looking for another club after Juventus
bought Gianluigi Buffon for a record fee (for a keeper). The former
Ajax goalkeeper has not been very popular, to say the least, in Italy -
his modest and sober style of goalkeeping has not impressed, while he's
actually the least passed goalie in the Italian league during his two
years there. His on-pitch style had the same effect on Ajax fans before
they realised just how good he was/is and he ended up being one of the
heroes of the great Ajax team of the mid-90s. After 9 years in Amsterdam
the "ijskonijn"(or icerabbit as he was affectionately known)
left for the warmer climes of southern Europe and top club Juventus but
has failed to develop a rapport with the Italian club's following. Dortmund
are one of several clubs who've been interested, Liverpool
are not!, and we should be hearing shortly who the three candidates
are who've contacted his agent Rob Jansen! |
| Clarence
Seedorf to sign for Marseille? |
12 July 2001
|
| Dutch
international Clarence Seedorf (57 caps) could be set to sign for
Olympique Marseille after Inter Milan and the French side agreed in
principle to the midfielder's transfer. The only stumbling block could be
the 25 year-old's salary - he's been earning somewhere in the region of
€3.5 million Euros a year in Italy and the French club will want to pay
him rather less! |
| Ferguson
guarantees Van Nistelrooy action |
10 July 2001
|
| Alex
Ferguson has guaranteed that Ruud van Nistelrooy will be a permanent
fixture of Manchester United's lineup and says he's no.1 choice up front.
He'll get his first chance to shine for the Reds during their Asian tour
which begins against the Thai national eleven on July 22nd, followed by
matches against a Singapore 'selected' eleven on July 24th, ending with a
match against Malaysia on July 29th. |
| Westerveld
denies L'pool want Van der Sar |
10 July 2001
|
| The
English press have been saying for days that Liverpool are interested in
buying the out-of-favour-at-Juventus Edwin van der Sar. Sander Westerveld
(no.1 goalie at Liverpool) has cleared things up by asking Gérard
Houllier if it's true and, as so often is the case, it's not true and the
club have no intention of buying another keeper. End of rumour! |
| Dortmund
want to buy Van der Sar |
08 July 2001
|
| The
German side Dortmund have approached Juventus with an interest in buying
Dutch international goalie Edwin van der Sar. The Italian club have just
bought Gianluigi Buffon from AS Parma for a record fee (for a goalie!) -
trainer Marcelo Lippi making it clear that Buffon will be 1st choice and
Uruguay's national keeper Fabian Carini will no.2. It seems likely that
Van der Sar, who's had a poor season, could well be ready to change clubs. |
| No
FIFA clemency for Edgar Davids |
07 July 2001
|
| There
will be no clemency or softening of the punishment handed out by FIFA to
Edgar Davids and Fernando Couto - the appeals of the Dutch FA (KNVB) and
the Portugese FA have fallen on deaf ears at FIFA HQ. President Joseph
Blatter has said the
bans will remain in force and that the respective FAs would be better
off making sure the situation doesn't arise again in the future. Both
players received automatic international bans after UEFA suspended them
from playing when they (and Frank de Boer and several
other players in Europe) failed a
dope test for nandrolone misuse. |
| Benfica
want to get rid of P-Air |
06 July 2001
|
| Wim
Jonk ends career |
06 July 2001
|
| Former
international Wim Jonk has decided to call it a day and put a fullstop
behind his footballing career. The 34 year-old ex-FC Volendam, Ajax,
Internazionale, PSV and Sheffield Wednesday player has been suffering
from a chronic groin injury during the last 6 months and has been without a
club since July 1st. It's expected he'll soon start work for Dutch public
broadcaster the NOS' Studio Sport programme. |
| Van
der Sar on the way out at Juventus? |
05 July 2001
|
| Edwin
van der Sar's days looked to be numbered now that his club Juventus have
bought Gianluigi Buffon in a record breaking deal which makes him the most
expensive goalie in history. Juventus are said to have paid €54,4
million Euros for the 23 year-old Parma keeper. It's not impossible that
the Dutch international, who's been having form problems, will move aside
and go to play for Barcelona - you never know! |
| Pierre
van Hooijdonk talks to Feyenoord? |
04 July 2001
|
| The
Dutch daily newspaper "Algemeen Dagblad" has reported that talks
between Pierre van Hooijdonk and Feyenoord are in an advanced stage and
could lead to a contract for several years. Benfica are in financial
problems and would like to sell the striker - he'd been offered to
Galasatary in part exchange for Jardel earlier this season. The former
RBC, NAC, Celtic, Nottingham Forest, Vitesse and Benfica player is well
known for his goal scoring abilities with 238 goals in 382 matches. |
| Van
der Gaag signs for CS Marítimo |
02 July 2001
|
| As
we reported earlier, Utrecht's Mitchell van der Gaag was set to move
to Portugese club CS Marítimo and we can now tell you that he's signed
a contract for two years, with an option on a third. |
| Van
der Gouw 1 more year with Man United |
01 July 2001
|
| Raymond
van der Gouw has agreed to stay on for another year at Manchester United -
he wants to be in on the action at Old Trafford during Alex Ferguson's
last season with "The Reds". The 38 year-old reserve keeper
(Fabien Barthez being 1st choice) is also expected to join the club's
technical staff at the end of next season. |
| KNVB
battles to clear Edgar Davids |
30 June 2001
|
| The
Dutch FA (KNVB) are joining forces with the Portugese FA in a battle to
get the FIFA bans lifted which were imposed earlier this year on both Edgar
Davids, in Holland, and Fernando Couto, in Portugal, after both
players tested positive for nandrolone. Both Football Associations are
claiming that FIFA's " Executive Comittee" has no official
status, no legal powers to hand out such a ban and is not even included in
the organisation's statutes. |
| Giovanni
van Bronckhorst signs with Arsenal |
20 June 2001
|
| De
Boer appeals against UEFA suspension |
19 June 2001
|
| Frank
de Boer has launched his appeal against the UEFA suspension handed out to
the Dutch international and Barcelona player last week. He played his last
match against Valencia on Sunday and will have to wait until the appeal
hearing in the second half of July to hear whether he will be able to play
again soon. Holland meet Ireland in September in the last chance for
Oranje to make it to the World Cup in Korea. |
| Barcelona
extend Frank de Boer's contract |
16 June 2001
|
| Barcelona
have extended Frank de Boer's contract for 2 years with an option for a
3rd in a gesture of confidence in the Dutch
Captain's innocence after he was banned from playing for one year by UEFA
for failing a doping test. He's going to appeal against the decision
and intends fighting to the bitter end to clear his name. In the meantime,
in Holland, there has been criticism of the tactics employed by his legal
team during the hearing of his case last Thursday. It seems that his
experts revealed their 'secret weapon' (calling into question the
reliability of the laboratory tests used to detect the misuse of banned
substances) too soon. It would have been more effective to have waited to
unleash their 'attack' during the appeal hearing when UEFA's own legal
experts are present and a proper legal argument could then have been
presented in a more effective manner. Some good news is that, because of
his appeal, he'll be able to play the last and vitally important match of
the season against Valencia. If they win they get a place in the
qualifying rounds of the Champions League (while Valencia will have to
make do with the UEFA Cup) but if they lose they will end the season out
of the top 5 for the first time since 1987/88. |
| Jordi
Cruijff extends contract with Alavés |
16 June 2001
|
| Jordi
Cruijff has extended his contract with Spanish club Alavés for another 4
years. He joined the surprise team of the Spanish League (who were beaten
in the UEFA Cup Final by Liverpool) last year from Manchester United. His
time in England was an unhappy one where he was dogged by injury and never
managed to secure a regular 1st team place due the heavy competition in
the Old Trafford squad but has made a comeback and turned into a key
figure with his new club. See our
profile of Johan Cruijff's son. |
| Arsenal
bid for Giovanni van Bronckhorst |
16 June 2001
|
| Arsenal
are preparing to put in a bid of somewhere in the region of €13.61
million Euros for Glasgow Rangers' Dutch international Giovanni van
Bronckhorst. The defender is cautious about speculating about the move
until the clubs have had official contact - after
all his speculated move to Chelsea fell through recently. Unofficial
talks have taken place via the telephone between Rangers' chairman David
Murray and "The Gunners" vice-chairman David Dein and it's
expected that the deal could be closed within a matter of days. Arsenal
hope that Giovanni's arrival will persuade Patrick Viera to stay with the
club - he's been threatening to leave if the defence at Highbury Park
wasn't reinforced to help compete on more equal terms with the continuing
dominant force in the English Premiership - Manchester United. |
| P-Air
uninterested in Turkey move |
15 June 2001
|
| P-Air
van Hooijdonk is uninterested in helping Benfica close a swap-plus-money
deal which would take him to Turkish club Galtasaray in exchange for Mario
Jardel moving to Portugal. He said "no way José" to the
proposal and had turned down offers to sign for Turkish clubs Fenerbahce
and Besiktas last year before he signed on the dotted line for Benfica.
It's a well known fact that Jardel wants a return to Portugal after
failing to settle in Turkey and Benfica remain the club most likely to
sign the star-striker. |
| Frank
de Boer gets one year ban |
15 June 2001
|
| 'Vitamin'
company takes De Boer to court |
14 June 2001
|
| The
Ortho Company, manufacturer of the Plantina dietary supplements, has taken
Frank de Boer and his father-in-law and agent, Rob Cohen, to court. They
want written guarantees that their products will no longer be named in
connection with the Dutch international's 'doping' affair. The player had
not reacted to requests by the company that samples of their products,
which De Boer had been using and had handed over to a laboratory in
Groningen for analysis, be returned for tests in their own laboratories.
They are unhappy that their products are being suspected of being
contaminated with nandrolone while they do not contain the banned
substance. |
| Baki
Mercimek goes to Sunderland |
14 June 2001
|
| Haarlem's
Baki Mercimek has signed a contract for 3 years (with an option for 2 more)
with English side Sunderland. The 18 year-old defender, who's apparently
seen by some members of the English press (and his new club) as the 'new
Jaap Stam', had gone in search of a new club after turning down a new
contract at Haarlem. He was equally uninterested in a return to Ajax but
is very happy with a move to the English Premiership with its combination
of physical and technical football. |
| Makaay
and Overmars get important goals |
11 June 2001
|
| A
Roy Makaay goal gave Deportivo la Coruña a 1 - 0 victory against Valencia
and assured his team of a place in the Champions League next season while
Barça drew against Real Valladolid thanks to a 81st minute goal from Marc
Overmars. Valencia will now have to fight it out with Barcelona for the
other Champions League place when they play their last match away at Camp
Nou. |
| PSV
interested in Ipswich's Martijn Reuser |
08 June 2001
|
| According
to 'English sources' PSV are showing a sudden interest in Ipswich Town's
Martijn Reuser and have supposedly offered close to €10 million Euros
for him. The Premier League side have qualified for the UEFA Cup next
season and look unlikely to let the 25 year-old former Ajax and Vitesse
midfielder go. |
| Alfred
Nijhuis signs for Karlsruher SC |
06 June 2001
|
| The
35 year-old defender Alfred Nijhuis started his professional career at MSV
Duisburg (he's never played professionally in Holland) before moving to
Borussia Dortmund and has now signed a contract with Karlsruher SC
(freshly promoted to the Second Division of the Bundesliga) for one year. |
