28 June 2001

As we reported earlier, the clubs were already in agreement over the transfer, and now Chris van der Weerden has agreed his own personal terms with Twente and the 28 year-old defender leaves PSV to join up with the "Tukkers" for 3 years.
Twente sign PSV's Chris van der Weerden

26 June 2001

Twente and PSV have agreed to the transfer of Chris van der Weerden from Eindhoven to Enschede - now it's up to him to negotiate terms with his new club. The 28 year-old right-back was not seeing regular action for the champions who can field André Ooijer, Ernest Faber and Rob Wielaer (recently returned from Den Bosch) in the same position.
Serious fire strikes Twente's Arke Stadium

25 June 2001

Twente's Arke stadium was seriously damaged by fire yesterday - two skyboxes were completely destroyed while some the supporting structure for the roof and parts of the main stand underneath were also subject to severe water damage. It's not known how much it will cost to repair the damage but the club hopes the stadium will be ready for theng match of the 'Tukkers' new season on July 28th against Anderlecht.
PSV sign Vennegoor of Hesselink

14 June 2001

PSV have finally agreed terms with Twente (who've been paid in the region of €9,08 million Euros) and have signed Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink on a contract for 5 years. The 22 year-old had been with the Tukkers for the last 5 seasons, and will be reunited with his buddy Arnold Bruggink.
Twente sign Austrian striker Ronald Kollmann

13 June 2001

Twente have signed the successor to Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Austrian striker Ronald Kollmann. The 24 year-old,  nicknamed "Roli", is a former FC Tirol Innsbruck player and has been bought from Austrian Champions and Cup Winners FC Kärnten where he scored 27 league and 13 cup goals.
PSV and Vennegoor of Hesselink close to deal

11 June 2001

PSV and Twente are close to agreeing the transfer of the Tukkers' international striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to Eindhoven. It's going to cost the champions between €9,8 and €11,34 million Euros to sign their replacement for Ruud van Nistelrooy (off to Manchester United). They're also looking to beat Anderlecht to the gun and add Michael Lamey to the squad, allowing him to ripen for another year at his current club RKC (as they're also doing with Groningen's Arjen Robben) before bringing him to Eindhoven.
Vennegoor move to PSV looks unlikely

08 June 2001

The current negotiations between PSV and Twente concerning the transfer of the Tukkers' Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink looks to have reached stalemate. The champions are simply unwilling to meet the price asked for the tall international striker and the deal could fizzle out in the next week or so.
Feyenoord target Sander Boschker

30 May 2001

Feyenoord have officially informed Twente that they are interested in buying goalkeeper Sander Boschker, the star of their Cup Final victory against PSV. The 30 year-old is seen as the replacement for Jurek Dudek if/when he leaves for Aresenal this summer. He has played for "The Tukkers" all his career, making his debut in 26th November 1989 against HFC Haarlem.
Vennegoor too expensive for PSV

29 May 2001

PSV have decided that Twente's asking price of €11 million Euros for frontman Jan Vennegoor of Hesslink is too expensive - it looks as though the transfer of the 'highly desirable' striker from Enschede to Eindhoven is off.
Twente win Cup Final after penalty shootout

24 May 2001

Today's Cup Final is the  golden opportunity for the "Tukkers" to sneak into the UEFA Cup and  simultaneously thwart PSV's attempt at the double. 32,000 Twente fans had travelled to the Kuip for the match and there had been the predictable pre-match clashes in the streets of Rotterdam. The match got off in beautiful sunshine with the vocal enthusuiasm of the Twente fans marred only (at least for the tv-viewing public) by the sound of what sounded like something rattling it's cage (it was a sound to recur throughout the match - boring!). Waterreus showed why he needed to play/was needed today with a great 3rd minute save of a Scott Booth shot and there were a couple of early chances for Van Nistelrooy (plus a couple of yellow cards for PSV). Some of the Twente tackling was also verging on the illegal and it was clear that this was going to be a tough match. On the half hour Waterreus saved another Scott Booth advance, smothering the ball and, soon after, Kezman had a go with his right foot. The game flowed backwards and forwards with plenty of attacking moves on both sides - Twente did well to absorb so much of the Eindhoven attack while still creating its own chances. Hofland missed narrowly with a header close to the end of the 1st 45 minutes ...  halftime 0 - 0.

Twente had started the match in confident mood and did the same in the 2nd half but PSV picked up their pace once more and Van Nistelrooy missed narrowly as the champions launched a series of menacing attacks. He then hit the dirt in the box as Sander Boschker dived for the ball but there was no penalty given. Twente came back with counters - Van der Laan had a clear shot but it went wide.  With half an hour to go the match was reaching a peak both on (in terms of the on pitch struggle and niggling between the players) and off (in terms of thethroats and deep lungs of the Tukker legions). PSV exerted increasing pressure on the 'Tukkers' during the remainder of the 90 minutes - Van Nistelrooy played a long and deep ball through to Rommedahl who returned the favour with a cross which Ruud headed almost into the Twente goal. Kolkka (substituting for Mateja Kezman who'd been wasted on the wing) had a great close range shot turned away by the lightning reflexes of Boschker. Both goalies were on real good form today. As the match went into injury time Rommedahl went on a solo mission on the edge of the area, letting fly with a blast which went over and Kolkka went just wide seconds later.

Extra time - PSV threw everything into the search for the Golden Goal and dominated extra time - of the many chances Van Bommel's shot past the post was the best. It seemed to be simply a question of time now before PSV would deliver the killer punch. Van Nistelrooy went down again in the box and again he didn't get a penalty - it just wasn't his day (Twente's Spira Grujic had done a great job during the match of neutralizing him and Ruud himself seemed to be in search of too much personal glory). 120 minutes of football wasn't enough and so, for the first time since 1964, the Cup Final was going to be decided by penalties. Vennegoor of Hesselink missed the 1st for Twente, Heubach missed the 3rd (Twente were now 1 - 3 down and it looked impossible for them to come back - but they did),  Boschker stopped De Jong's shot and now it was Waterreus who was going to take the last and possible winning spot-shot ...Boschker stops it!!!! The shots go on and Boschker saves the next one to give the Tukkers the cup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brriilliiaanntt!! Three terrific saves from Sander Boschker give the 'Tukkers' a dramatic  Cup victory. I usually hate penalty shoot-outs but this was a great one.

Zwolle sign Käre Becker

19 May 2001

Zwolle have signed Käre Becker on a contract for 2 years. The technically gifted player turned out for Feyenoord and De Graafschap (as well as for Jong Oranje) - this season he's been playing with Heracles, on loan from Twente.
Vennegoor decides on future after FA Cup

18 May 2001

Twente's highly rated striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink has said that he will not be making a decision about his future until after the Dutch FA Cup final against PSV on May 24th. Although Feyenoord were said to have approached Twente about buying him, that proved to a false rumour and, while there have been no shortage of clubs linked to the Dutch international, noone has approached him personally. Once the season's over he could still have the choice of Feyenoord, Ajax, PSV or a number of foreign clubs.
Feyenoord talk to Vennegoor of Hesselink

12 May 2001

FC Twente have given Feyenoord the official go-ahead to talk terms with Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. He's one of the strikers on trainer Bert van Marwijk's wanted list but it could cost the Rotterdammers €9,08 million Euros to buy the striker (who has scored 15 goals this season).
Twente beat Fortuna 0 - 2

11 May 2001

Unfortunate Fortuna would have liked a win tonight in their battle to stay clear of the danger zone (they are only 4 points ahead of 17th placed Sparta and still 2 points behind De Graafschap). The visitors needed only un point to make sure they wouldn't have to undergo the indignation of the end-of-season playoffs. A Thijs Houwing pass gave Scotsman Scott Booth the chance to put the Enschede team ahead after 20 minutes. The Sittardians couldn't come up with a reply and Chris de Witte made certain Twente went home with 3 points when he scored a 2nd goal in the 89th minute. Frans Thijssen will be hoping that their rivals-for-survival at the bottom of the table will drop some points in the last few matches of the season. Maybe today's match between Sparta and AZ will bring some last-minute hope for the Limburgers.
Feyenoord join the race for Vennegoor

09 May 2001

Feyenoord have told Twente that they would like to buy Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. They join the queue of clubs waiting to do business with the most-wanted-striker in Holland -  PSV made an official approach last week , Ajax's Co Adriaanse made it known last month that he'd like to add the 22 year-old to his squad while there are also foreign clubs waiting in the wings
Twente bury RBC 4 - 1

05 May 2001

History was repeated this evening as Twente put another nail in RBC's coffin ( as they were handed out their 25th defeat of the season - something which has only happened once before in the history of the Ere Divisie) thanks to a hattrick from Thijs Houwing. The home team went two goals up within 10 minutes of the whistle - Houwingd in the 4th and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was also quick off the mark in the 8th. Houwing got his 2nd in the 25th while Marcel Cas got one back for the Roosendaalers in the 36th. Houwing got himself his 3rd in the 71st to practically dash any hopes RBC may have had of staying up and escaping relegation. If Sparta manage a draw with Groningen tomorrow then the Roosendaalers are certain to go down to the Toto Division.
Utrecht want Van der Laan

01 May 2001

Utrecht would like to buy Twente's Arjan van der Laan. The 31 year-old midfielder's place is threatened by new arrival Björn van der Doelen and  he may well grab the chance to leave.
Twente beat AZ 1 - 0

28 Apr 2001

Twente (14th) and AZ (13th) are neighbours, 2 of 3 clubs with 31 points (12th placed Groningen being the 3rd). In a middle-of-the-road match AZ had the early chances and looked to have the edge over their opponents for most of the match. The Alkmaarders' Van Galen and Dries Boussata missed 1st half opportunities and, after the break, Boussata  hit the bar in the 61st before Simon Cziommer scored a beauty for the home team in the 64th. AZ only took home a red card - Jan Kromkamp got his marching orders in the 87th as the match ended with angry scenes, tempers out of control. Twente will be happy for the lift into 12th place while AZ will be disappointed not to have salvaged at least un point and slide to 14th.
Twente's Fred Rutten new PSV youth trainer

23 Apr 2001

Twente's Fred Rutten has been named as the new youth trainer at PSV (where he takes over from Remy Reynierse). He'd been trainer with the "Tukkers" since he took over the reins from Hans Meijer in 1999 and the club had hoped that the 38 year-old would stay on for one more season in another capacity.
2 for Promes as De Graafschap beat Twente 4 - 0

21 Apr 2001

De Graafschap, along with Fortuna, are hovering above Sparta with 1 point between them and the no.17s. Twente are in 12th and would clearly like to improve their placing before the end-of-the-season final whistle sounds - there's 6 points between them and no.11 side NEC. Marino Promes gave the home team a good 1st half start with goals in the 32nd and 39th minutes. Milan Berck Beelenkamp and John van der Brom added a one-two in the 82nd and 84th to give them 3 points extra distance from the bottom 3 clubs. Twente's performance was poor and, although De Graafschap's wasn't pretty to look at, the home team get their 2nd consecutive win (after last week's surprise win in the Kuip). After their semi-final Amstel Cup win against Vitesse Twente are looking ineffective and will have to work hard to avoid the end-of-season playoffs.
John van 't Schip gets Twente job

17 Apr 2001

As we reported earlier, John van 't Schip was reported to be man-most-likely to take over from Fred Rutten at Twente next season. The 37 year-old ex-international (41 caps), former Ajax ) and Genoa ) player has been looking after Ajax's A1 Juniors since 1999 and has been asssistant to Co Adriaanse this season. He's signed a contract with the "Tukkers" for two years.
Ellery Cairo injured

17 Apr 2001

Twente's striker Ellery Cairo has dislocated his shoulder in yesterday's match against Utrecht. He'll be examined today to determine how long he'll be on the injured list.
Twente and Utrecht in goalless draw

16 Apr 2001

Twente have slid to 12th place in the table, their place in the Amstel Cup Final a more than decent consolation with it's promise of European football next season, while Utrecht have been slowly but surely improving their ranking and are now in equal 7th with Willem II (who earlier this afternoon were beaten by NAC). A win for them would take them to within 3 points of 6th placed Vitesse (who face stiffer competition in their reamaining matches) and still have a game in hand! Not only that but they can begin to dream of European football next season. They drew in this afternoon's  'hard' match (pushing Willem II into 8th place) - the home team had plenty of chances to score - a shame that Van der Paar, Thijs Houwing, van der Laan, Heubach and Vennegoor of Hesselink were lacking that extra bit of alertness when given the opportunity to put one away.
Twente in Cup Final after penalty shoot out against Vitesse

12 Apr 2001

Tonight's semi-final contrasted the rather physical style of Twente, making good use of the wings and crosses, with the more elegant Vitesse, moving forward through the centre - the potential reward for the winner is European football next season. Both teams were in serious mood and committed to winning as the game got off in high tempo with plenty of early chances on both sides and a fair dose of dodgy tackles and short fuses -  Peeters and Claessens, and Booth and De Witte had the best earlyngs, respectively, for Vitesse and Twente during an action-packed 1st half. There could have been a couple of goals scored on both sides but the finishing lacked sharpness -  Peeters and Vennegoor of Hesselink missed the last chances for their teams just before halftime. The 2nd half started in the same hard working fashion, Vitesse launched a series of attacks and threatened to score - Twente's goalie Sander Boschker had plenty to do and he did it to perfection under pressure. The Arnhemmers looked more in control of the play and their opponents created fewerngs than in the 1st 45 minutes. Peters was replaced by Mbamba in the 70th. Tempers flared as the frustrations of the lack of goals set in - there was a lot of honour, extra European matches and extra income at stake (not that the players necessarily had that on their mind). Both goalkeepers performed well during the 90 minutes (one reason why noone had scored) and sudden-death extra-time was looking inevitable. After a quick breather Fortes broke free down the left to give Mbamba the first chance of extra-time, followed by a Claessens header that went wide and Mbamba again with a close call a couple of minutes later. In the 2nd extra 15 minutes the tiredness set in along with the long, hopeful balls - penalties were looming large. Scott Booth's substitute Heubach shot, which went just over, was the last thrill - penalties would decide the victor. Kreek, Vennegoor, Diarra, they all go in but De Witte makes the 1st mistake - a complete miss, followed by Mbamba's which hit the post, Van der Leegte's goes in, Van Hintum's misses, Heubach's hits the back of the net - it was now down to Van de Schaaf to give Vitesse their last chance with Polak getting the chance to put Twente in the final and Europe ......iiiiiiiiiiiitttttttsssss Twente!!!!!!!.
Twente sign Vitesse's Pothuizen

 10 Apr 2001

Twente are on the point of signing Vitesse's 28 year-old defender Patrick Pothuizen who's been playing for them on hire for the last few months.
One-a-piece as Twente draw with RKC 1 - 1

07 Apr 2001

Twente deservedly went ahead in the 21st minute when Chris de Witte tapped in Vennegoor of Hesselink's header. They kept up the pressure during the 1st half but had a Scott Booth 'goal' disallowed (offside). After the break RKC woke up and started to play better football but it wasn't until the 77th minute that Iwan Redan equalized for the Waalwijkers to bring them level. Minutes later it looked as if Ellery Cairo had scored the winner for the home team but it was disallowed -  the no.4 side go home to Brabant with a point and are almost certain now of their best table ranking ever (previous best was 7th in the 1990/1991 season).
Blind not bound for Twente

29 Mar 2001

Danny Blind will not be FC Twente's new trainer - the 39 year-old Ajax A1 trainer was linked earlier this week to the vacancy but has turned down the club's offer. Is Ruud interested?
Lodeweges calls of Twente move

22 Mar 2001

Dwight Lodeweges, currently trainer of Toto division side FC Zwolle, has called off his move to Twente where he was to become the new trainer, succeeding Fred Rutten. The talks were apparently taking too long for Lodewges and have come as a complete surprise for Twente, whose technical director Jaap Uilenberg explained that they had already talked once and another round-the-table session was planned for the coming week.
Feyenoord too strong for Twente 5 - 1

18 Mar 2001

Bert van Marwijk must have been a happy man - finally being able to call on the services of his favourite widemen Leonardo and Kalou this afternoon. The home team were inspired by the reacquaintance, Leonardo causing all kinds of problems down the left. Substituting Erik ten Hag for El Brazi helped a bit to curb the Brazilian's advances but it wasn't what you'd call a total success. Although Scott Booth boosted the visitors into the lead in the 3rd minute, Kalou snatched it away a minute later. Paul Bosvelt scored from a penalty in the 15th to give Feyenoord the lead. David Connolly converted a Jon Dahl Tomasson pass for a 3rd in the 64th and the Dane got his own, the 4th a minute later. Ebi Smolarek got the 5th in the 78th.
Lodeweges new Twente trainer

13 Mar 2001

FC Zwolle's trainer Dwight Lodeweges is to take over at FC Twente from Fred Rutten (who leaves at the end of this season).
Uilenberg new technical director Twente

12 Mar 2001

Referee Jaap Uilenberg starts immediately as the new technical director at FC Twente, succeeding Theo Vonk who left the club earlier this season.
Twente and NEC draw 1 - 1

10 Mar 2001

NEC are now 9 games without a win and have lost the momentum of their strong start to the season. Tonight's was their 13th draw of the season - the last time they got 3 points was coincidentally against  today's opponents in Nijmegen (of course!). Chris de Witted the score for the home side in the 27th minute. Peter Wisgerhof equalized in the 61st, showing why NEC are so keen to sign him - he's on loan from Vitesse.
Van Gaal advises Vennegoor of Hesselink to leave Twente

08 Mar 2001

Louis van Gaal has advised Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to leave his current club Twente at the end of the season. The advice came during the preparations for last week's friendly between Holland and Turkey and it looks certain that he will indeed make a move this summer (Tottenham Hotspur have expressed interest as well as Ajax and PSV). The striker has stated his preference to remain in Holland - so now the chase is on!
Tottenham eye Vennegoor of Hesselink

05 Mar 2001

Tottenham manager George Graham took a peek at striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink during Saturday's match between Sparta and Twente - Jan felt flattered at being the subject of the London Premier League side's interest. He's also on the shopping list (as a possible buy) of several clubs - Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord and, of course, Twente themselves would like to keep him in Holland, while others such as Glasgow Rangers and Schalke 04 are said to be interested in tempting him abroad. Whether they will swoop for him at the end of the season remains to be seen - certainly Tottenham could do with the extra firepower at the moment (Sergei Rebrov has still not settled in, Chris Armstrong and Stefan Iversen have had fitness problems and Les Ferdinand's future with the club is uncertain - he's yet to sign his new contract). What will they ever make of his name over there though!!??!!
Sparta beat Twente 5 - 1

04 Mar 2001

Sparta are of to a terrific start under new trainer Wim hanegem with their 2nd consecutive win - and what a win! Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink gave the visitors the lead in the 1st minute but that was a mere distraction - Silvan Inia equalized for Sparta in the 22nd minute and John Nieuwenburg put them ahead in the 28th. Erik ten Hag scored an own goal to make it 3 - 1 for the Rotterdammers in the 54th and Michel Langerak made it 4 - 1 in the 69th. That man Elkhattabi was there again in the 88th to make it 5 - 1 for Sparta - a great start for Wim Hanegem!
Rutten's last season as trainer Twente

27 Feb 2001

This is to be Fred Rutten's last season as trainer of Twente. The 38 year-old played for the club between 1979 and 1992, went to work as assistant trainer between 1993 and September 1999 before taking over as trainer. A (substantial) difference of opinion with the board of directors is the reason for him stepping down, although he expects to stay with the club in another capacity, perhaps working with the youth squad.
Twente beat Vitesse 2 - 1

24 Feb 2001

Twente dominated the 1st half with flowing football and could have been several goals up before halftime - Zoetebier had just managed to push Scott Booth's header away, Sjaak Polak's corner found Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink waiting to put away his 12th of the season (after only 4 minutes play), while Cairo missed minutes later. Vitesse seem to have lost their self belief and look powerless to do anything about it. Trainer Koeman knows it's all in the mind and tried out a couple of 2nd half substitutions but without much success, Didier Martel (back after a long absence) was off again after 7 minutes with a head wound, and the game looked over once Ellery Cairo made it 2 - 0 in the 67th. Vitesse had made 3 substitutions when Mahamadou Zongo left injured, reducing them to 10 men - Twente's Fouzi El Brazi being sent off (after only 7 minutes on pitch) evened things out again for Vitesse in numbers. only they didn't have the fight left to turn things around, although Gert Claessens got a consolation goal in the 85th. Vitesse are now 6 games without a win and are fighting it out for 4th place with Ajax.
NAC and Twente in goalless half hour

21 Feb 2001

NAC and Twente have ended the match began on February 10th, but brought to a halt when the floodlights went out, in a goalless 31 minutes football this evening.
Groningen beat Twente 2 - 0

18 Feb 2001

This was a match full of sloppy play and careless fouls, Twente being the better team technically but unable to profit from thengs when they came. Scott Booth was the main mover for Fred Rutten in midfield, but the trainer saw Ellery Cairo, Booth and Chris de Witte's goal attempts stopped by Roy Beukenkamp. Groningen did more with the fewer opportunities that came their way and two 2nd half goals, a Peter Hoekstra shot in the 47th and Hugo's header in the 90th, clinched the match to the approval of the Oosterpark stadium fans this afternoon. Twente fans were less pleased and pelted the pitch with whatever was at hand. Groningen leapfrog Twente in the table and are well clear of the danger zone.
NAC - Twente match suspended as lights go out

10 Feb 2001

After 58 minutes of play the match between NAC (in which Bryan Roy was making his debut) ended abruptly as the floodlights gave up the ghost and refused to illuminate any further footballing minutes. The match will be decided at a later date.
Zwolle lose by a whisker to Twente 3 - 4

07 Feb 2001

Twente were in a generous (or careless) mood tonight. Within the first minute a mistake by Dennis Hulshof allowed John den Dunnen tothe score. They pulled alongside within a couple of minutes through Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink in the 5th. Another defensive error by the visitors gave Zwolle their 2nd goal - an own goal by Jeroen Heubach in the 23rd. Arjan van der Laan got an equalizer in the 27th and Scott Booth put them ahead before halftime in the 39th, 2 - 3. Zwolle worked hard in the 2nd half and there was little to choose between the teams. Henk van Steeg missed an equalizer for them while  Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink made it 2 - 4 in the 77th. Martijn Abbenhuës gave Zwolle some hope with a beautifully struck 3rd in the 83rd but, despite a final assault on the visitors' goalmouth, it was Twente's night.
Fortuna lose out to Twente 1-2

27 Jan 2001

Twente get their 2nd Amstel Cup win of the week - after taking out the last amateur side Achilles '94 on Wednesday they went home from Limburg with a quarter final place. Thijs Houwing scored in the 9th minute but Fortuna came back with a goal in the 30th by hired gun Nenad Bjekovic (confirming trainer Frans Thijssen's choice) to even things up. Scott Booth got what turned out to be the match winner early in the 2nd half, an efficient Twente kept the lid on the match till the final whistle. They now meet Zwolle who knocked out Heracles in a decisive 5-1.
Twente win scramble for Sjaak Polak

26 Jan 2001

Twente have won the scramble to sign young defender Sjaak Polak in a surprise move, outflanking Groningen (who were rumoured to be the most likely to sign him) and beating AZ and RKC into the bargain. Polak could leave Rotterdam's Excelsior (who've confirmed that an agreement has been reached between the clubs) for Enschede as early as Monday, although he's yet to agree on personal terms with his new club.
Twente interested in Ajax's Pique and Volendam's Kras

24 Jan 2001

Twente are interested in signing two new players - Ajax's Mitchell Pique, currently on loan to the Enschede club (Ajax have a month to decide) and 18 year-old Ruud Kras, the Dutch Under 18 defender.
Twente eliminate last amateurs Achilles 6 - 1 in FA Cup

23 Jan 2001

Twente saw off the last amateur club in the Amstel Cup Achilles '94 by 6-1. The amateur side had fought hard for the right to play the match after problems with agreeing a date for it but were, on the day, no match for the Premier division side. Harold Wekema gave the profs an own goal advantage which they built on to have a 3-0 lead by halftime (Scott Booth and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink the scorers). Arafat Heuvel restored a little honour for Achilles in the 2nd half but Jan got another 2 and Ellery Cairo got one to make clear the difference between the two teams.
Twente say goodbye to Hilgerink

11 Jan 2001

Twente FC are releasing Edwin Hilgerink from his contract and allowing him to leave. The 27 year-old defender returned to the club in Enschede, where he began his footballing career, last season but has struggled to hold onto a place in the 1st team lineup (playing only 11 games last season and none at all since August).
Pothuizen on loan to Twente

06 Jan 2001

Vitesse defender Patrick Pothuizen is to go on loan to Twente for the rest of the season. This makes him the 2nd player to leave Arnhem in recent days, John van Brom being the other (he's gone to De Graafschap). Do you get the idea Vitesse need some money?
Achilles '94 and Twente finally meet January 23rd

21 Dec 2000

After all the wrangling and court appearances the FA Cup match between amateurs Achilles '94 and Twente will finally take place on January 23rd at 2.30 (in the afternoon?!).
Sander Boschker cleared of red card offence

20 Dec 2000

Twente goalie Sander Boschker has been cleared of the red card offence 'committed' against Cedric van der Gun in last Sunday's match against Ajax due to insufficient evidence.
Ajax stun Twente 5 - 1

17 Dec 2000

The Amsterdammers were given a helping hand when Twente goalie Sander Boschker got sent off after only 7 minutes to reduce Twente to 10 men. He rushed out and floored Cedric van der Gun in an attempt to collect a terrible back pass by Kandelaar - the referee didn't have to think twice. Machlasd the score in the 15th minute and Rafael Van der Vaart got a header in the 22nd. It was Ajax all the way from then on -  a penalty by Chivu (back after injury), Machlas with his 2nd, a header (he was as unmarked as Rafael was earlier). The Greek was instrumental in the 5th as his pass gave Galásek the chance to join in the fun. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink got one in for Twente but this was an unhappy 90 minutes for the team from the province of Enschede. Ajax should have got even more on the board but the finishing too often lacked finesse. Nonetheless, Co Adriaanse was more than pleased with his team and also showing interest in Mitchell Piqué, currently hired out by Ajax to Twente, who's betting he won't be back in town soon?
Achilles '94 wins court case over FA Cup match

17 Dec 2000

The amateur club Achilles '94 has won its court case to set a new date for its FA Cup meeting with FC Twente. The Dutch FA (KNVB) had given the match to Twente after the amateur side refused to play an afternoon fixture - for the obvious reason that the team have daytime jobs. The court has decided that the FA should have looked at another date for the match before handing victory on a plate to Twente. It has suggested January 23rd as a possible new date for the match - either in the afternoon in Assen (been here before?) or in the evening in Twente's stadium.
Twente lose to Roda 0 - 2

13 Dec 2000

Yannis Anastasiou made Roda fans happy with 2 goals that hit Twente between the eyes, one 4 minutes before halftime and a 2nd 9 minutes into the 2nd half. Twente will be wishing they'd never heard of him - he scored twice against them when they played away against Roda. The home team dominated theng half hour, the only thing missing was a goal. Chris de Witte should have scored and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink gave unmarked Erik ten Hag a chance but he blasted over the bar. Instead it was Anastasiou who delivered the first of his blows in the 41st minute. Eric van der Luer's free kick gave him the chance to show what he's good at, evading his marker and turning to slip the ball past keeper Sander Boschker. Van der Luer's pass gave Ellery Cairo the chance for another Roda goal early after the break but it went over. Another Van der Luer freekick gave Anastasiou his chance for a repeat performance in the 54th, his shot bouncing in off the underside of the bar. Vennegoor of Hesselink's freekick missile was blocked by keeper Kalac and the rebound to Van der Paar failed to go in, hitting the woodwork. Another last scramble in front of goal gave Twente a last chance to pull one back but Cairo's strike was cleared by a defender. After 3 consecutive defeats by Willem II, PSV and Vitesse Roda will undoubtedly be encouraged by this evening's performance.
Achilles '94  gets last chance to play FC Twente

09 Dec 2000

The amateur club Achilles '94 from Assen has been given a last chance to rearrange their cancelled FA Cup match against FC Twente II. They went to court to fight the Dutch FA's decision to allow Twente free passage to the next round of the cup after the mayor in Assen decided to ban the match on the original date because of possible crowd problems. The court has ruled that the club may organise a date either just before Christmas or halfway through January.
NEC's Janssen in 350th gets winner against Twente 1 - 0

03 Dec 2000

In his 350th professional appearance Anton Janssen scored NEC's winner against FC Twente for their first premier division home win against the visitors since 1981. Janssen made his debut for the club against Ajax on 25th September 1982 when NEC lost 5 - 0. Despite missing De Gier, Hristov and Koning (all with match suspensions) as well as goalie Gentenaar and Patrick Ax through injury NEC delivered another competent performance. Janssen will be grateful to the absent for the chance to put a cherry on his celebration cake. They played better than their guests, after a hesitant start, and 'dominated' for most of the match. Only at the end, after 3 changes had been made by Twente trainer Fred Rutten (Chris de Witte, Tommie van der Leegte and Kevin van de Paar) did they really exert any pressure on NEC but, apart from a post tester by Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, nothing came close. The home team's Pieter Collen threatened to score 2 closing counters but the scorenoard was reserved for "good old" Anton. NEC are now 5th and breathing down 4th place Ajax's neck, only 4 points behind and with a game in hand.
Twente in 3 - 0  victory over Groningen

26 Nov 2000

Twente needed their points to keep themselves afloat in the middle of the table. Groningen wanted a win to stay clear of the relegation zone - only having 12 points from their last 13 games. Unfortunately they created few attacking moves in the 1st half - one was when Curovic shot over the bar. In the 2nd half they had more men in front of Twente's goal but Broerse, Leonardo and Hoekstra all failed to put one away. Twente's goalie Sander Boschker was voted man of the match. If it hadn't been for his skills the scoreline would have told a different story. Trainer Rutten decided to reward some "Tukkers" (Twente players) for hard work in training by giving them some action. The substitutions proved a good move -Thijs Houwing scored in the 78th from Erik ten Hag's freekick and 10 minutes later Chris de Witte ( substituting for Boudewijn Pahlplatz) scored a 2nd for the home team. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (fresh from his international debut) scored the 3rd in the last minute. Rutten was satisfied after the match but well aware that he had much to thank his man of the match Boschker for!
Twente hires out Jan Verlinden to Lierse SK

24 Nov 2000

FC Twente have hired out the 23 year-old midfielder Jan Verlinden to the Belgian club Lierse SK ,who have an option to buy his contract (which runs until 2003). They had no room for him in their squad. Before moving to  Twente he'd played for KV Mechelen.
Willem II and FC Twente evenly matched 2 - 2

19 Nov 2000

A lack of finishing skills and sheer cold blooded goal scoring meant the team from Tilburg had to share the honours with the visitors. Trainer Hans Westerhof gave his Argentinian striker Mariano Bombarda a place on the bench as a reward for his lack of goals in the last few games. Who exactly he thought was going to do the scoring was unclear - it was Twente who went ahead in the 23rd minute when a long throw in was headed on by Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink for Pahlplatz to head away. Minutes later (26th) Yassine Abdellaoui got the well deserved equalizer for the home team. Willem II remained dominant in the 2nd half, only they couldn't translate that into goals. Twente relied on effective counters and were first to strike in the 56th minute through Arjan van der Laan. At that point Westerhof suddenly decided that it was time to let Bombarda have a go and this time the Argentinian didn't disappoint, scoring in the 71st minute.
Twente thrash NAC 4 - 0

12 Nov 2000

FC Twente has seen turbulent times recently. Lack of success and unhappy fans had led to the departure of technical director Theo Vonk. The friction between the trainer Fred Rutten and the newly departed Vonk was public knowledge.Their last matches they lost (to PSV and AZ) and that had pushed them back down to the lower half of the table. Today's victory will be good for the team moral as well putting the number 6 place back in reach. Rutten was relieved that for the first time this season they had not conceded a goal and hoped it would lift spirits after all the recent unrest. Arjan van de Laan scored for them in the 30th minute in a match where they showed gutsiness and aggression -  sufficient ingredients for success today. NAC had a really off day and couldn't get into the match at all. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink scored a second in the 48th and the 4th from the penalty spot in the 74th minute after the offender Neblosja Gudlej got his second yellow card. Their 3rd came from Van der Leegte in the 71st.
FC Twente through in FA Cup without touching ball

11 Nov 2000

Twente go through to the next round of the Dutch FA Cup (Amstel Cup) without having to touch the ball. Their opponents, Achilles'94 (the last amateurs in th etournament), have been disqualified because they couldn't provide an alternative date for the cancelled fixture of October 16th.
Theo Vonk resigns as director Twente FC

07 Nov 2000

Theo Vonk has handed in his resignation to the board of directors at Twente FC. He has been technical director at the club for the last year and a half. There has been a lot of criticism directed at him, some of it nasty, as a result of Twente's ranking in the Premier Division (currently in 12th place). He is responsible for the buying and selling of players which fans believe to be the root cause of the club's lack of success so far this season.
PSV win against FC Twente 2 - 0

05 Nov 2000

PSV began the match without Arnold Bruggink and Matja Kezman but were still too strong for Twente. They dominated the early part of the match and could have scored several times - Van Bommel, Rommedahl and De Jong had their chances but failed to make use of them. Joonas Kolkka and Dennis Rommedahl on the wings were constantly racing past their opponents and causing problems in front of the Twente goal. It wasn't long though before Ramzi scored the first goal in the 10th minute. Almost immediately Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink had the chance to equalize but was denied by Chris de Witte's excellent defending. The home team then concentrated on keeping Twente well away from their goal area, leaving Ramzi and Rommedahl to occasionally have a go in attack. In the 2nd half, substituting Brazi for Van der Paar, Twente made a better job of controlling the PSV forwards. After an hour's football Brazi almost scored for the visitors from a corner and Cairo saw his shot miss by a whisker. Kolkka missed a chance for the home side before getting his second in the 67th minute and the rest of the match was PSV's. Matja Kezman got a yellow card for handling the ball which was the only blemish on a sound performance by PSV
FC Twente win 3 - 1 against Sparta

21 Oct 2000

Twente's victory didn't come easy, so they will be happy that the result looks good on paper and that they have their 3 points. Twente started strongly and Vennegoor of Hesselink almost had a goal after 6 minutes.  Tommie van der Leegte scored in the 14th minute, Ali Elkhattabi answering back with a goal for Sparta 5 minutes later. Sparta played well but compliments do not deliver points and a climb up the table. Elkhattabi was Sparta's best and most threatening player, proving too much for Twente's young African defender (from Burkina Faso) Ouedraego. He was replaced by Fouzi El Brazi who had just as much trouble keeping up with Elkhattabi. In the second half Scott Booth scored Twente's 2nd goal in the 58th minute and Van der Leegte got his second goal to make it 3 - 1 in the 81st.
FC Twente and Fortuna draw 1 - 1

15 Oct 2000

Fresh from his international debut Jan van Venegoor of Hesselink scored ther for Twente in the 32nd minute and the equalizer came in  the 46th minute from Gerritsen. Fortuna's trainer Rutten was  not happy with his team's performance while it was a shot in the arm for Twente's trainer Henk Duut.
