| Roda
win friendly 13 - 0 |
12 July 2001
|
| Roda
have won their first match under new trainer Jan van Dijk against LHC 13
- 0. Dave Zafarin got a hattrick and Yannis Anastasiou got two. Unhappy
Marc Nygaard missed the match after receiving telephone threats from
'fans' who are 'unhappy' with his lack of loyalty (he'd
been trying to leave the club). Jan van Dijk was, however, impressed
with his motivation during the last week and upset that he had to leave
him out of the team. He's determined to keep him out of harm's way and
re-establish the player's confidence in the club. |
| Marc
Nygaard stays with Roda |
09 July 2001
|
| Marc
Nygaard has reported back for duty in Kerkrade after earlier
asking the club to let him go. The Danish striker had even gone to
arbitration in order to force the club to lower the €13,6 million Euro
asking price which he felt was putting off prospective buyers from
putting in a bid. |
| Roda
sign Frederik Berglund |
03 July 2001
|
| Roda
have paid IF Elfsborg circa €2 million Euros for Swedish international
striker (3 caps) Frederik Berglund and signed him on a contract for 5
years. Roda hope he'll form a goal-hungry, goal-getting duo with Yannis
Anastasiou. The tall 22 year-old has scored 6 goals in the 11
matches played so far in the Swedish Allsvenskan and also becomes the 4th
Swedish striker in the Dutch premier Division - Johan Elmander
(Feyenoord), Marcus Allbäck (Heerenveen) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Ajax)
being the others. |
| Roda
join forces with Patro Maasmechelen |
02 July 2001
|
| Roda
JC have signed a cooperation pact with Belgian 2nd Division side Patro
Maasmechelen. Both clubs hope to profit from the 5 year-deal... Roda can
stall players in Belgium while Patro hope to benefit from Roda's
experience. |
| Feyenoord
to sign Roda's Van Haaren |
07 June 2001
|
| Feyenoord
and Roda have agreed terms regarding the transfer of defender Ramon van
Haaren. The 28 year-old has yet to agree his personal terms with the
Rotterdammers and will have to compete with Tomasz Rzasa and Tininho for
the left back position. |
| Dusseldorp
new VVV trainer |
25 May 2001
|
| Wim
Dusseldorp is the new VVV trainer - the 40 year-old former MVV player has
signed a contract for the coming 2 years with the Venlo club. In the past
he was keepers' trainer and head of training at MVV but is currently
working as Sef Vergoossen's assistant at Roda. |

|
| NAC
want Roda's Gabor Torma |
23 May 2001
|
| NAC
are interested in buying Roda's Hungarian striker Gabor Torma. The 24
year-old's contract still runs till 2003 but the Limburgers are willing t
let him go. He was Belgium's top scorer in 1997, putting away 18 goals for
Cercle Brugge, but a series of injuries since moving to Roda has meant
he's only scored 10 goals in 52 matches. NAC have experience with
Hungarian players - Henk ten Cate brought Gábor Babos (tipped to replace
Jurek Dudek in goal at Feyenoord) and Csaba Fehér with him when he
arrived as trainer from MTK Budapest. |

Soetaers attracts English clubs |
21 May 2001
|
| Roda's
Tom Soetaers has been attracting the interest of several English clubs.
Ipswich Town, Tottenham Hotspur have already shown their faces and now
Arsenal scouts have been spotted watching the 20 year-old Belgian striker
score in yesterday's match against NAC. |
| PSV
want Fatik Sonkaya |
21 May 2001
|
| PSV
have their eyes on Fatik Sonkaya as the ideal replacement for their 37
year-old Danish defender Jan Heintze player would then play in the
left-back position (he's currently playing right-back). The 19 year-old
was o loan to VVV last season but has played all his 23 games this season
for Roda. |
| Utrecht
beat Roda 3 - 0 |
13 May 2001
|
| Utrecht
could take over 5th place from RKC (who only moved in last night with an
away win against De Graafschap) while Roda, if they win could be
really breathing down Feyenoord's neck if the Rotterdammers lose at Ajax
(they'd both be on 59 points). Dirk Kuyt was on the ball to put
Utrecht ahead in the 34th minute. Roda put the home team under increasing
pressure in the 2nd half and Marc Nygaard had a header that bounced off
the underside of the bar and seemed to jussssttt cross the line
disallowed. Mitchell van der Gaag headed home an unexpected 2nd in the
74th from a freekick and Stefaan Tanghe made absolutely sure of the
points with a well taken 3rd in the 90th. Utrecht go into 5th place and now they are breathing down Ajax's neck
(both on 55
points, but the Amsterdammers stay ahead on goal average and
they also still have a game in hand to give them some comfort). |
| Vitesse
and Roda share points 1 - 1 |
05 May 2001
|
| A
very important match for both teams in their fight to secure European
football next season. Roda are 11 games without defeat (since February
11th) while Vitesse have been having a rough ride since the winter-break.
The Arnhemmers had the best chances in the 1st half -
Victor
Sikora could have put them ahead in the 2nd minute and Michel Kreek
missed a penalty (for Ger Senden's hands-ball) halfway through the
1st half. It was symptomatic of the Vitesse attack's inability to
convert chances (a comparison...Bob Peeters, bought from Roda, has only
put away 9 this season while Yannis Anastasiou has scored 18 for the
Limburgers). Sikora did find the back of the net in the 51st minute
with a great shot but the
lead was shortlived as Tom Soetaers
equalized in the 60th. Roda went for the win but a lack of accuracy and
the woodwork put an end to their chances. Vitesse climb ahead of Utrecht to 5th and Roda are
now 3rd, one point ahead of Ajax. |
| Den
Haag sign Stefan 't Hart |
05 May 2001
|
| ADO
Den Haag have signed Stefan 't Hart on a contract for 1 year. The 30
year-old defender played for amateur sides Scheveningen and DHC before
going professional with Sparta's reserves, moving on to Roda who lent him
out to VVV this season. He's played 39 professional games and never
scored. |
| Dudek
gives Roda 1 - 0 victory over Feyenoord |
29 Apr 2001
|
| An
own goal by unhappy-man-of-the-match Jurek Dudek in the 62nd minute gave
Roda a valuable 3 points in their hunt for European football while the
Rotterdammers are a pale shadow of their former pre-winter break selves.
Without Kalou, injured, and with an out of sorts Leonardo they have no
wings and when added to that their midfield engine Paul Bosvelt is also
missing then the heart's gone out of the side. They traditionally have a
rough ride in Kerkrade and today was no exception. The 'own goal' came
when a Regilio Vrede shot bounced off the post only to rebound off Dudek's
back into goal. Roda close the gap with Feyenoord to 4 points while Ajax
are a point behind them in 4th but with a game in hand. |
| Soetaers
goal as Roda snatch win against Sparta 1 - 0 |
21 Apr 2001
|
| Roda
will be wanting to pick up 3 points in their bid for European
football next season - they're in 4th on 49 points. Sparta are caught
between a rock and a hard place in 17th and desperately need the points if
they're to make a last minute escape from relegation. Fortuna and De
Graafschap are only one point ahead so the Rotterdammers still have a small
chance of avoiding the drop. The home side were unable to create any
chances in theng half and Sparta had the best, and only, opportunity
but it was wasted. The 2nd half saw Roda go on the attack and
man-of-the-match Tom Soetaers got a winner in the 83rd
minute to move them ahead of Ajax into 3rd place - but the Amsterdammers
have a game in hand. Shame about Sparta - if hadn't been for the excellent
goalkeeping of Frank Kooiman several other balls would have found the back
of the net! |
| Ajax
hold Roda to 1 - 1 draw |
16 Apr 2001
|
| Two
points separate the two clubs at the moment, Ajax are 3rd with 50 and Roda
5th with 48. A win for the home team would make them equal 3rd with the
Amsterdammers (an end-of-season 3rd placing brings with it a chance to
play Champions League football) while Ajax would at the very least like to
consolidate their position and a win would bring them to within 3 points
of 2nd placed Feyenoord (who are struggling). Roda pressed hard with
early chances for Nygaard (who's just renewed his
contract) and Anastasiou while Ajax had a couple of 1st half moments
through Arveladze and Van der Gun (who hit the post). In the 2nd half the woodwork denied Regilio Vrede but Yannis Anastasiou
put away the rebound and gave them a lead in the 62nd minute. It looked as though the points
were Roda's until Cedric van der Gun was unceremoniously brought
down in the box to give Shota Arveladze the chance to level the scores
with a spot-shot and close the gap with Feyenoord by 'un point'. Roda
leapfrog RKC into 4th. |
| All
the van Dijks leave Groningen |
12 Apr 2001
|
| Dominique
van Dijk is the latest, and last, of his family to take the decision to
leave the club. His father is off to become Sef Vergoosen's successor as
trainer at Roda and his brother, 19 year-old midfielder Gregoor (scorer of
3 goals in 22 games), has already decided to try and join up with his
father. The Oosterpark crowd have been giving Dominique a rough ride with
their taunts (they've always thought the brothers enjoyed preferential
treatment under 'daddy' Dijk) and he's had enough - two Toto sides are
already showing interest in the 21 year-old (scorer of 2 goals in 38
games). |
| Nygaard
decides to stay with Roda |
12 Apr 2001
|
| Roda's
Marc Nygaard is now prepared to extend his contract with Roda JC till
2003. The 24 year-old Dane has made his excuses to the club for earlier
statements that he was going to leave the club when current trainer Sef
Vergoosens leaves at the end of this season. |

08 Apr 2001
|
| Roda
took the lead through Tom Soetaers in the 17th minute and went further
ahead in the 25th courtesy of Edrissa Sonko. Hugo got one back for the
home team in the 37th but Yannis Anastasiou clinched the points with a 3rd
for the visitors in the 80th. |

| Willem
II let Roda get away 1 - 1 |
31 Mar 2001
|
| Willem
II let Roda offthe hook this evening and did their own prospects of
experiencing European football next season all kinds of harm by not
cashing in the full monty. Neither team was particularly deserving of
victory - after a disappointing 1st half the home team showed more
initiative after the break which led to a couple of chances for Yassine
Abdellaoui before Joris Matthijssen gave them hope of those juicy
3 points in the 72nd. Sef Vergoossen brought on Gabor Torma and Garba
Lawal to exert more pressure up front which finally paid off when top
scorer Yannis Anastasiou (now on 16) snatched a last minute
equalizer to spoil the fun for the home side. |
| Senden
wants a change |
21 Mar 2001
|
| Roda's
Ger Senden is ready to make a move to a new club, preferably in Germany.
The 29 year-old right back has been with his current club for 9 years and
was 'demoted' to the reserve bench earlier this season, being replaced by
Fatih Sonkaya. Although he's now back in the team, his time spent on the
bench gave him the opportunity to think about the future - now that there
is German interest in him it could be the right moment to look for a new
challenge before it's too late, and he's too old. |
| Roda
beat De Graafschap 3 - 1 |
17 Mar 2001
|
| De
Graafschap find themselves in increasing trouble after tonight's defeat by
a confident and strong Roda side. There is currently a motivation problem
at the club, their sponsor has been making unhappy noises and trainer
Gerard Marsman sent the squad home on Thursday to have a think. It didn't
help and an early, and questionable, penalty against them meant that Yannis
Anastasiou was scoring from the spot in the 13th to put the home team into
the lead. Dave Zafarin made it 2 - 0
in the 31st and De Graafschap hearts sunk further. In fact, with a little
more luck the Limburgers could have scored several more goals by halftime
and completely dominated the visitors. The SuperFarmers (SuperBoeren)
fought hard enough but don't have the class that the home side are oozing
at the moment. Theyd the 2nd half with more vigour though and this
was rewarded when Ruslan Valeev scored a consolation goal in the 50th,
during a momentary lapse of concentration in the Roda defence. Anastasiou
headed home a 3rd for Roda from a Van der Luer freekick in the 65th to
secure the points. |
| Jan
van Dijk new Roda trainer |
13 Mar 2001
|
| Groningen's
Jan van Dijk becomes Roda JC's new trainer as of next season. He's signed
a contract for 3 years and succeeds Sef Vergoossen who's off to Racing
Genk. |
| Roda
win 1 - 0 against NAC |
09 Mar 2001
|
| Roda
move into a tasty 4th place after their perseverance was rewarded with 3
points tonight against tenacious Limburgers NAC. Yannis
Anastasiou scored the only goal in the 64th to put them 2 points ahead of
Vitesse in 4th place (who have a game in hand) while NAC's cause was
undermined when Regillio Simons got a red card in the 70th. |
| Roda

09 Mar 2001
|
| Energy
company Eneco are Roda's new shirt sponsor, replacing Stienstra Vastgoed
who remain a club sponsor. Eneco is already sponsoring Sparta's Het
Kasteel stadium. |
| Roda
approach Leeskens for trainer's job |
08 Mar 2001
|
| Roda
JC have been trying hard to find someone to replace Sef Vergoossen (who's
taking over at Racing Genk next season). So far they've shown interest in
Christophe Daum (but he's off to Turkey's Besiktas) and asked Jan Wouters,
Peter Bosz and Danny Blind, but all have have turned down the offer. They
may have finally found the right man for the job in Belgian George
Leekens. The former Cercle Brugge, Anderlecht, Kortrijk, Club Brugge, KV
Mechelen, Trabzonspor, Charleroi SC, Excelsior Moeskroen and Belgian
national coach is currently employed by SC Lokeren. What makes it
particularly interesting for him is the fact that Roda are looking for
someone who, in the longterm, will be able to combine the task with that
of technical director. |
| Roda
unattractive location for new trainers |
07 Mar 2001
|
| Roda
JC are still without a new trainer - Christophe Daum is off to Turkey and
Besiktas and other 'names' who've been approached by the club are either
unwilling to take on the job and/or don't want to put themselves and their
families through the upheaval of the move to 'distant' Limburg. Peter Bosz
and Danny Blind have turned down the club's offer and they need to find
someone soon in order to make a start with sorting out the squad for next
season. |
| Roda
calling Daum!!! |
05 Mar 2001
|
| Roda
JC would like to get in touch with Christophe Daum, who's pretty much
dropped out of sight since the 'cocaine affair' put his career on hold. The Dutch club are without a
trainer at the end of the season when Sef Vergoossen departs for his new
challenge at Racing Genk and the empty place on the bench he leaves behind
could provide Daum with a reasonably low-profile reentry into the game.
It's unlikely that he will take up the offer as he's already on the wanted
list of other clubs - Besiktas and an unnamed Italian (a big one, name
that is) club have been linked to the former Leverkusen manager. |
| Goalless
PSV
and Roda |
03 Mar 2001
|
| PSV
failed to make use of the chances they created in tonight's match - Ruud
van Nistelrooy, appearing in the 34th minute would have perhaps hoped
for a more event filled comeback and a goal would have been nice too! As
it was the visitors' tight defence held up throughout the 90 minutes,
even after Ramon van Haaren got two yellow cards and departed in a
controversial decision which left them playing the 2nd half with
only 10 men. The general Roda opinion was that the 1st card belonged to
Nurmela. Ruud had a couple of near misses (one hit the post, the other
was turned narrowly away by Kalac) and Mateja Kezman got round the Roda
defence once, and past goalie Kalac, only to be denied by Regilio Vrede.
Veteran Jan Heintze missed by a fraction in the 73rd and Bruggink also
hit the woodwork in the 80th but the scoreboard remained empty. If Roda
been more concentrated in their counters the visitors might have caused
a real upset, as it was they dug themselves in deep and were content to
leave Eindhoven with the one point. Feyenoord have the chance to close
the gap with the current leaders to two points tomorrow if they beat
Vitesse. |
| Mark
Nygaard to leave Roda? |
28 Feb 2001
|
| The
recent announcement of Sef Vergoossen's departure for Racing Genk, at the
end of this season, has been a personal blow for Danish international Mark
Nygaard, who is thinking of leaving Roda JC. The former FC København, SC
Heerenveen and MVV player's business agent, Emile Miedema, said that
Nygaard felt he had really matured under Vergoossen's guidance and will
now be considering the future (there are various interested parties). |
| AZ
go down 2 - 4 to rampaging Roda |
24 Feb 2001
|
| It
was Roda's night for goals while the home team played the better football - AZ's José Fortes Rodriguez gave them a start with an
own goal in the 10th and Garba Lawal and Regilio Vrede added 2 within
minutes of each other (14th and 17th minutes) to put Roda undeservedly,
but most definitely, 0 - 3 up by halftime. Roda's Mark Luijpersd
the 2nd half with an own goal in the 47th to even that score 1 - 3.
From then on the Limburgers made a better impression, which spurred AZ
into a fight back, Robin
Nelisse scoring to make it 2 - 3 in the 57th and giving them some hope before Yannis Anastasiou made
it 2 - 4 in the 68th. Roda remain in 5th place a close one behind
Vitesse. |
| Sparta
hire Rudge from Roda |
22 Feb 2001
|
| Sparta
have hired Humphrey Rudge from Roda for the rest of the season. The 23
year-old defender couldn't count on a 1st team place in Limburg and
becomes Willem van Hannegem's first reinforcement since he took over as
trainer this week. |
| Parting
of the ways for Roda and Vergoossen |
20 Feb 2001
|
| Sef
Vergoossen has told Roda JC that this will be his last season in Kerkrade
and it's time for something new. His moment of glory as trainer, since
arriving in 1998 from MVV (where he was technical director), was helping
Roda win the Amstel Cup in 2000. |
| Heerenveen
in goalless draw with Roda |
17 Feb 2001
|
| A
frustrating night for Heerenveen fans as their team struggled to make any
impression whatsoever in this match. They looked uninterested in improving
their table ranking and took Roda with them in their doldrums-football.
Apart from a handfull of chances on both sides the match was a severe
disappointment all round. Roda could have gone ahead early on, but
Anastasiou's shot hit the bar in the 15th, and Nygaard saw his 'goal'
dissallowed in the 58th (though in the replay he was clearly not offside)
while in the 70th Nurmela hit the bar for the Frieslanders. Heerenveen will no doubt console themselves with
the coming quarter final cup match against Feyenoord, abandoned last
Wednesday due to thick mist, on March 14th. Roda will not be unhappy with
an away point. |
| Roda
beat RBC 2 - 0 |
11 Feb 2001
|
| Roda
were missing Eric van Luer and Kevin van Dessel but the Limburgers'
fighting spirit was not dimmed by their absent comrades. Mark
Luijpers got the first for the home team in the 22nd minute with a header
from Dave Zafarin's corner, Marc Nygaard and Regilio Vrede providing
aerial distraction for the visitor's defence. Hungarian Gabor Torma
rounded off Dave Zafarin and Tom Soetaer's attacking move with a 2nd
goal in the 38th. Mr. Luijpers departed after his 2
yellow cards earned him a sending off in the 70th but RBC were unable to
make use of the one man advantage. |
| Roda
out of cup after losing 0 - 2 to PSV |
07 Feb 2001
|
| The
attendance was a measly 8,900, a poor showing for a quarter final cup
match! PSV began the match in aggressive mood, André Ooijer earning
himself a yellow card within minutes of the whistle. The first chances
of the match were thrown away through poor finishing, Zafarin (for Roda)
and Bruggink missing a couple of times, Kezman's 'goal' ruled offside.
PSV finally got their act together in the 2nd half and struck through
goals by Rommedahl in the 47th and Arnold Bruggink in the 73rd. Roda
were caught between the need to prevent the visitors' strikers getting
too much space, and opportunity to score, while needing to have a go
themselves. The end result was their fans saw little of the team's
reputed fire and fighting spirit, no home goals, while PSV are now in
the semi-finals. |
| Fortuna
beat Roda 1 - 0 |
31 Jan 2001
|
| Nana
Bjekovic scored in the 8th minute to give Fortuna an early lead - just
what the doctor ordered! He's proving again, after only 3 weeks at his new
club, to have been a good choice by coach Frans Thijssen. Roda looked a
pale imitation of the side who'd so soundly beaten Utrecht in the Cup,
lacking motivation and looking uninspired. The home team made all the
chances and it was only the excellent keeping of Australian Zeljko Kalac,
who stopped balls from Bjekovic, Joos van Barneveld, Marko Heering and top
scorer Ronald Hamming, that there weren't more goals on the scoreboard.
The new French signing Emeran saved a ball from the line in the dying
minutes, after Mark Nygaard's header looked as though it would go in, to
save the well deserved and essential-for-survival points for Fortuna. They
stay bottom, RBC winning surprisingly at NEC, but things are definitely
getting better. |
| Roda
win 2-0 in Amstel Cup against Utrecht |
27 Jan 2001
|
| The
Limburgers were never in trouble against Utrecht, Gabor Torma surprising
Harald Wapenaar in the 3rd minute. The goalie had to leave the pitch
injured only minutes later to be replaced by Atam Koroglu in his 1st team
debut. Groenendijk and Gluscevic had opportunities to score for the
visitors close to halftime but Yannis Anastasiou showed how it's done to
make it 2-0 for Roda in the 45th. The home side held on to their lead in
the 2nd half disturbed only by substitutes Dombi and Kuyt's last ditch
attempts to pull something out of the hat for Utrecht, too little too
late. |
| Roda
sign New Zealander Vichelich |
23 Jan 2001
|
| Roda
JC have agreed terms with New Zealand international Ivan Vichelich
(currently playing for N.Z. prof side Kingz FC in the Australian league).
He will be signing up until 2005, with an option on two more years after
that. |
| NEC
lose to Roda 0 - 2 |
17 Dec 2000
|
| The
castrated home side (stikers De Gier and Hristov watched, suspended, in
the stands) were no match for Roda, who are looking better all the time.
An early 8th minute goal by Kevin van Dessel and a Tom Soetaers special in
the 65th minute gives them 5th place in the table. |
| Twente
lose to Roda 0 - 2 |
13 Dec 2000
|
| Yannis
Anastasiou made Roda fans happy with 2 goals that hit Twente between the
eyes, one 4 minutes before halftime and a 2nd 9 minutes into the 2nd half.
Twente will be wishing they'd never heard of him - he scored twice against
them when they played away against Roda. The home team dominated theng half hour, the only thing missing was a goal. Chris de Witte
should have scored and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink gave unmarked Erik ten
Hag a chance but he blasted over the bar. Instead it was Anastasiou who
delivered the first of his blows in the 41st minute. Eric van der Luer's
free kick gave him the chance to show what he's good at, evading his
marker and turning to slip the ball past keeper Sander Boschker. Van der
Luer's pass gave Ellery Cairo the chance for another Roda goal early after
the break but it went over. Another Van der Luer freekick gave Anastasiou
his chance for a repeat performance in the 54th, his shot bouncing in off
the underside of the bar. Vennegoor of Hesselink's freekick missile was
blocked by keeper Kalac and the rebound to Van der Paar failed to go in,
hitting the woodwork. Another last scramble in front of goal gave Twente a
last chance to pull one back but Cairo's strike was cleared by a defender.
After 3 consecutive defeats by Willem II, PSV and Vitesse Roda will
undoubtedly be encouraged by this evening's performance. |
| Roda
0 Willem II 1 |
10 Dec 2000
|
| The
Tilburgers got the winning goal from a penalty after Roda had loads of
chances to score but failed to put any of them away. Trainer Vergoosen
must have felt like tearing his hair out watching Anastasiou, Soetaers,
Van Lawal and Van Dessel throw away chance after chance. The home team could
have been anything up to 5 - 0 ahead by halftime and Willem II's shaky
defence gave Roda plenty of opportunities to test reserve goalie Jimmy
van Fessem. All of their attempts to hit the back of the net came to
nothing. To make things worse the 2nd half continued in the same vein, it
always looking as though Roda would score. It came as something of a shock
when Rigilio Vrede's 86th minute penalty area foul gave Willem II's Landzaat the
chance to win the match. Trainer Wsterhof was relieved that his team
had put an end to a run of 7 games without a win, while Roda will be
disappointed that this was the 3rd defeat in a row in their new stadium. |
| PSV
in 2nd place after 1 - 2 win over Roda JC |
02 Dec 2000
|
| Eindhoven's
best were without Arnold Bruggink (5 match ban) and Kevin Hofland (one too
many yellow cards) and Erik Gerets had put on Ernest Faber for the latter
and Adil Ramzi up front to take over Bruggink's attacking role. They
started in fine fashion with 3 chances in the first 10 minutes - Van
Bommel shot wide, Ramzi's attempt went over and Mateja Kezman was denied
anner by Zeljko Kalic (favoured over Bas Roorda to look after goal).
Roda's trainer Sef Vergoossen decided on a one-to-one tactic and, apart
from when Anastasiou hit the crossbar, the rest of the 1st half was
man-to-man stuff. Neither side giving the other enough room to pass and
play the ball, except over really short distances. The crowd had to wait
until the 68th minute for goal action when Kezman shook off his chaperone
Regilio Vrede, turned and scored. Roda were now forced to change tactic
and substituted Tom Soetaers with Mark Luijpers, who went on the
offensive. The risk was understandable but gave PSV's Kezman the chance to
get his second in the 81st minute when he weaved round Fatih Sonkaya and
Kalic to find the back of the net. Davy Safarin scored within a minute to
give the home side hope and they threw everything they had in attack. It
was too late for Roda and their last attempts were a sign of desperation
and tiredness after Tuesday's trial against Vitesse. PSV's trainer Gerets
was pleased with the result, once more reaping the rewards of his belief
in his Rumanian striker Kezman. |
| Tijani
Babangida returns to Holland and Roda JC |
01 Dec 2000
|
| The
27 year-old Nigerian international and ex-Ajax winger Tijani Babangida is
set to return to Holland after 2 unhappy months in Turkey playing for
Genclerbigli. He hasn't been in good form there, playing only twice, and
is feeling 'homesick' for Limburg (that picturesque Dutch province
bordering on Belgium). He hopes to sign a deal with his old club Roda JC
where he made his name between 1993 and 1996. Co Adriaanse let him go,
having no place in his scheme of things in Amsterdam. |
| Vitesse
back on top after 2 - 3 win at Roda |
29 Nov 2000
|
| The
Arnhemmers are back in the no.1 slot after this away win over Roda. It was
Nygaard who had the first chance of the match after Anastasiou's pass
found him with only Zoetebier between him and the goal but his attempt
went over. Roda continued to exert pressure without result while Vitesse
calmly waited for anng. It came when a mistake by Bas Roorda left
Sikora with a 25 meter shot which he blasted in 0-1. Vitesse soaked up the
Roda attacks (mostly smallngs from corners and the odd distance
shot) in the rest of the half without difficulty while doing little to
increase their lead. The 2nd half began in similar fashion - Zongo got a
2nd for the visitors after 8 minutes. Roda fans finally had something to
cheer about in the 60th when Eric van der Luer's pass was headed in for a
winner by Anastasiou. Within a minute Soetaers had a perfect opportunity
to draw level but Zoetebier made a great save. Kreek made it 1-3 for
Vitesse in the 70th and Anastasiou gave Roda a last glimmer of hope in the
87th of at least levelling the match but it was too late. Roda had the
chances but were lacking in the finishing department, Vitesse boxed clever
and made better use of the opportunities when they arose. |
| RBC
go down 0 - 4 to Roda |
25 Nov 2000
|
| This
was RBC's 1st defeat in their new stadium and the scoreline created
unhappy faces. Goalie Sieb Dijkstra had a bad game - normally he would
have had no problems with 2 of the goals he let in today. Trainer Bob
Maaskant took full responsibility for the defeat, blaming it on his choice
of one-to-one tactics. RBC kept up with the visitors for theng 25
minutes - until Eric van der Luer scored Roda's 1st goal from a freekick.
The 2nd came in the 36th from another freekick. Dijkstra was fooled into
expecting another Van der Luer shot but, instead, Soetaers curled it
towards goal, poor Sieb tried to correct himself, got hold of the ball but
let it slip through his fingers. The 3rd goal was a terrific long distance
blast by Garba Lawal in the 44th, who couldn't quite believe it when his
shot hit the back of the net. RBC had their work cut out trying to stop
any more goals in the 2nd half. Pascal Heije was dismissed for his 2nd
yellow card in the 78th minute and with only 10 men it got even harder. It
was no surprise when Sonko got a 4th for Roda in the 87th. |
| Roda
JC beat Utrecht 2 - 1 |
18 Nov 2000
|
| Roda
had enough goal scoring chances in the match to have turned it into a
humiliation for Utrecht. The score could have been 6 or 7-1 were it not
for their inability to score in the 1st half. Soko, Nygaard and Anastasiou
had 5 chances between them. Utrecht were a shambles in midfield and
weren't much better in defence. Roda played a weak 2nd half but, just as
Utrecht were trying to get their act together, they got their 1st goal from
Lawal in the 57th minute. Dombi got an equalizer for Utrecht in the 67th
minute and Van der Luer got the match winner for Roda in the 84th. |
| Roda
punish Heerenveen 3 - 1 |
12 Nov 2000
|
| Heerenveen's
form remains inconsistent and Roda will be happy with their confidence
building performance today. The match began promisingly and, once
Heerenveen got into motion, both teams had chances to score. It
wasn't until the 31st
minute that Kevin van Dessel blasted one in from 25 meters to give the
home side the lead, Yannis Anastasiou adding a 2nd in the 33rd with a
nicely placed chip which totally surprised Hans Vonk in goal. Brazilian
Rafael Viera came on to try and inject some life into Heerenveen's
attacks, almost succeeding with a great run through Roda's defence only to
have his attempt reach goalie Roorda. Nygaard added a 3rd for the home
team in the 58th, Heerenveen finally getting a goal on the scoreboard
thanks to Nurmela in the 62nd. The visitors were lucky that Hans Vonk was
on form and in place to prevent more goals in the last stage of the
contest. |
| Feyenoord
sail through against Roda 4 - 2 |
05 Nov 2000
|
| A
hat-trick by Paul Bosvelt sealed Roda's defeat in a match where they had
insufficient firing power to counter Feyenoord's. The game really heated
up in the last 15 minutes of the 1st half when Bosvelt scored from a
penalty in the 31st minute and within 2 minutes had scored another.
Tininho scored an own goal to help Roda along a little but Bosvelt was on
hand in the 40th minute to give Feyenoord a 3 goal lead at half time. The
2nd half saw a much improved Roda, attacking, forcing a number of
corners but unable to create realngs. After coasting for most of the
half the home side came back to take control and Kalou scored from
Smolarek's pass in the 77th. At the last moment Roda managed to sneak in a
2nd for them courtesy of Ramon van Haaren from a corner. |
| Fortuna
fail to win at Roda JC 1 - 0 |
02 Nov 2000
|
| The
unfortunate Sittardians are still sunk at the bottom of the table after
this defeat by Roda. Their fans couldn't join them for the match after
some hooligans vandalised Roda's stadium earlier in the week and hired gun
Jan van Halst (from Ajax) wasn't eligible to play yet. Fortuna's goalie
Ruud Hesp had celebrated his 350th appearance at the weekend against NAC
(he's never missed a match) and has returned from Barcelona for his 11th
season in Dutch football's top. The visitors were no problem for Roda in
the first half, having only a couple of small chances. Regilio Vrede put a
rebound away in the 40th minute for the only goal of the match. The home
side remained threatening in the 2nd half and had the chance to seal their
victory through shots by Eric van der Luer and Garba Lawal. Fortuna also
finally started to look as though they had something to say after all and
provided Bas Roorda, in goal for Roda, with some difficulties but he kept
any shot that came his way out of the net. Fortuna sit unhappily at the
bottom with 2 points from 9 games. |
| Roda
lose to RKC in bloodless duel 0 - 1 |
29 Oct 2000
|
| This
looked at times more like an afternoon's kick about than a Premier
Division duel. Both teams had trouble holding onto the ball when they had
it. RKC at least gave a slight impression of knowing why they were there
and confirmed this with a goal in the 23rd courtesy of Hoogendorp.
Anastasiou did his best for the home team but he wasn't enough on his own
to turn the game around. Any opportunity Roda got to attack was more the
result of errors by RKC's defence than any skill on their part. Roda's
coach Sef Vergoossen replaced Tomasic and Zafarin with Sonkaya and Lawal
but with no result. Soetaers moved over to the left and had their best
chance of a goal with a blast against the post in the 79th minute -
although it was more a lucky shot than one which was on target. Most Roda
advances were neutralized and even when Eric van der Luer had a last go at
scoring in injury time it was cleared from the line and Tchoutang couldn't
get hold of the rebound. This was the third time in the last 4 years that
Roda have suffered a home defeat at the hands of RKC. |
| Roda
JC beat FC Groningen 2 - 0 |
15 Oct 2000
|
| This
was an unentertaining match where Roda's Yannis Anastasiou's goals (scored
in the 19th and 60th minute) and Eric van der Luer's award for his 500th
professional appearance were the only highlights. |
| Roda
buy Sonko from Anderlecht |
03 Oct 2000
|
| The 20
year old Gambian Edrissa Sonko has signed a contract with Roda JC for 5
years. He is the second striker to make the move from Anderlecht to Roda,
following in the footsteps of Yannis Anastasiou. The deal was worth 3.2
million Euros. |
| Bratislava
play Roda JC out of UEFA Cup 2-1 |
26 Sep 2000
|
| Roda
were no match for the Inter Bratislava team and, even though they managed
to score a goal which made the margin appear smaller on paper, are now out
of the cup. The Dutch team were rudely awoken when Inter hit the bar after
25 minutes and were truly awake by the time the Slovakian side went ahead
in the 38th and 43rd minute. They pushed forward and had two good chances
with headers - finally, Tchoutang scored their only goal in
the 54th minute. |
| Roda
go down 0-2 to Bratislava |
14 Sep 2000
|
| The
Roda team were no match for Inter Bratislava lacking aggression and
the will to win against a side who were content to defend but yet
still managed to score two goals on the break. At the end of the first
half they were 0-2 down, now if they could have scored maybe...? They
didn't and gave a tired and uninspired performance. They obviously missed
Anastasiou, who had been scoring every match for them, but he was not
eligible to play due to the fact that he was bought too close to the start
of the Dutch season. Despite a great chance to get a goal back in the
dying minutes of the match this was not Roda's night. |
| Roda
JC show interest in Gerald Sibon. |
03 Sept 2000
|
| Roda
JC have set their sights on Sheffield Wednesday's Dutch centre forward
Gerald Sibon. The tall striker was Holland's top scorer when he played for
Roda during the 1996/97 season and might do well to return to his former
club. When Sibon became top scorer in 1997 he was sold to Ajax where he
never managed to earn a place in the first team. After only two seasons he
was sold to Sheffield Wednesday who were relegated last season to
the English First Division. Roda have offered the English club 2,3 million
Euros for Sibon but will probably have to raise their offer significantly
before Wednesday agree to the transfer. |
| Roda
JC win as Anastasiou impresses |
26 Aug 2000
|
| When
Roda JC sold their centre forward to Vitesse a few days before the start
of the new season in Holland it seemed as if they were more interested in
money than in earning early league table points. Well, you'd have been
wrong in thinking so because within a few days of receiving the
Euros they were paid for Bob Peeters, Roda JC had already found an even
better replacement for a fraction (10%) of Peeters' selling price. After
only two games it's already clear that Yannis Anastasiou was the perfect
choice and Roda JC can thank their lucky stars that the
interest they had been showing in Liverpool's Erik Meijer did not result
in him being lent to the Dutch club. De
Graafschap, whod the season with a 2-0 victory over current Division
1 champions PSV, have come back down to earth with a bump. In spite of
their 3-1 defeat by Roda JC De Graafschap's English trainer Rob
McDonald still believes his team can do well this season and will
undoubtedly stay clear of the relegation zone. |
| Sparta
- Roda JC 2 - 2 |
19 Aug 2000
|
| The
new season kicked off yesterday with Sparta - Roda JC holding each other
to a 2 - 2 draw. Roda JC saw centre forward Bob Peeters leave
for Vitesse a few days before the start of the season but have found a
more than adequate replacement in the Greek player Ioannis Anastasiou. The
new Roda playerd the score in the 16th minute and was unlucky to
miss his second goal of the game a little later on. Another player to make
a good impression was Sparta's Ali Elkhattabi. The Moroccan player not only
scored both of Sparta's goal, his second a cracker, but was also a
constant threat to Roda's defence. |
