Info PSV
PSV was founded on 31 August 1913 - at the end of a party organised by
Philips celebrating 100 years of Dutch independence. Football began as
just one of the 19 sport associations run by the workers of multinational
Philips. PSV's stadium stands on the spot originally occupied by the
Philips Sportpark. In 1914 the club joined the national league and within
a few years, and a few promotions, were already one of Holland's top
sides. Their first major success dates back to 1929
when they became League Champions for the first time. They
won the Dutch FA Cup for the first time in 1950 and in 1955 they were the first Dutch team to
compete in the original European Cup - what we now call the Champions League. In the
season Coen Dillen made history by scoring 43 league goals ... to this day
an unbroken record. The middle of the 70's was a golden period for the
club with a team including such names as Willy van der Kuylen, the Van der
Kerkhof brothers, Jan van Beveren, Jan Portvliet, Harry Lubse and Huub
Stevens. They won the Dutch FA Cup twice, the League three times and, in
1978, gained international
recognition by winning their first UEFA Cup, beating Bastia 3-0. There followed
a period of rebuilding which created the successful side of the late
1980's with players such as Ruud Gullitt, Ronald Koeman, Hans van
Breukelen, Gerald Vanenburg, Wim Kieft, Sören Lerby, Frank Arnesen and
Erik Gerets (currently trainer). From 1986 to 1992 PSV
were the dominating force in Dutch soccer, winning the League 7 times
and the Dutch FA Cup 3
times. In 1988 they won the 'Treble' - League, FA Cup and (for the first time in their history)
the Champions League Trophy! They beat Benfica in a penalty shoot out -
after extra time and at the end of a terrific and nerve wracking match.
Following this towering achievement PSV brought one of the world's great
players to Holland - Romario de Souza Faria who excited admiration
everywhere he played in the early 90's. His replacement was another great
talent - Ronaldo Luiz Nazario de Lima. In 1996 the club won the FA
Cup for the 7th time and in 1997 they were League Champions for the 14th
time. The Super Cup got its new name in 1996 - the Johan Cruijff Trophy -
PSV won it that year and the following 2 years to make it 3 in a row. The
club started 1999 with a lot of new faces, a new coach (Erik Gerets) and a
heavy Champions League schedule against tough opponents. In the League
they started well but had a dip in February 2000 when they went out of the
FA Cup. Nonetheless, they finished the rest of the season at the top and,
on April 21st, were crowned League Champions for the 15th time.
