| PSV
can play in ArenA |
12 July 2001
|
| Amsterdam
city council have given PSV permission to play their first home match of
the Champions League in the ArenA. They still have to reach an agreement
with the stadium's management but that is more or less a formality. The
champions have to play one of their Champions League matches at least 100
km from 'home' as 'punishment' for the pitch invasion during their match
against 1. FC Kaiserslautern last autumn. They feel more than comfortable
playing in Amsterdam, having won 7 of the 9 matches played in the ArenA
since itsng in 1996. |
| Joonas
Kolkka on trial with Celtic |
11 July 2001
|
| After
trying out with Panathinaikos
in Greece Joonas Kolkka is now having a look at life in Scotland with
Celtic. The 26 year-old striker is still under contract until 2002 with
PSV but Eric Gerets has said he can look around for another club. He's
expected back in Eindhoven on Thursday for training but it shouldn't be a
problem for him to stay on a while longer in Glasgow if he needs to,
according to press officer Pedro Salazar, and a deal with the Scottish
side could be completed well in time for the new season. |
| Kolkka
bound for Panathinaikos? |
08 July 2001
|
| Joonas
Kolkka has been talking with Panathinaikos about a possible move (with
PSV's permission of course, as they already have a replacement!) to
the top Greek side. He's paid them a recent visit with his agent but is
still unsure whether or not to take the plunge. Although he's still got a
year to go on his current contract with the Dutch champions he's
unlikely to see much action - the left-winger joined the Eindhoven
club, after spells with Willem II and MyPa, in 1998 but never enjoyed a
regular 1st team slot. |
| PSV
try to find players new clubs |
2June 2001
|
| PSV
is hard at work trying to find new homes for several players - Claudio,
Robert Fuchs, Ivica Kralj, Sergei Temrukov, Eric Kortchaguin and Godwin
Attram are all on offer to any interested clubs. Portugese side Gil
Vicente have already hired Manoel till the middle of 2002. The 23 year-old
Brazilian striker went to PSV in 1997 and was on hire last season to Vitória
Guimarães where he scored twice in 13 games. |
| PSV
sign Croatian defender |
05 July 2001
|
| PSV
have signed Croatian defender Stippe Lapic - the 18 year-old central
defender plays for the reserves at Hajduk Split. He's signed up till 2004
with the Dutch champions and is expected to be part of the 1st team squad. |
| Van
der Weerden signs with Twente |
28 June 2001
|
| As
we reported earlier, the clubs were already in agreement over the
transfer, and now Chris van der Weerden has agreed his own personal terms
with Twente and the 28 year-old defender leaves PSV to join up with the
"Tukkers" for 3 years. |
| Khalilou
Fadiga replaces Kolkka at PSV ? |
27 June 2001
|
| Jonas
Kolkka is to leave PSV, where he doesn't get to play many matches
nowadays, and the champions are looking at replacing him with AJ Auxerre's
Khalilou Fadiga. The 26 year-old former FC Liège, SK Lommel and Club
Brugge striker worked with Eric Gerets at Brugge. |
| Twente
sign PSV's Chris van der Weerden |
26 June 2001
|
| Twente
and PSV have agreed to the transfer of Chris van der Weerden from
Eindhoven to Enschede - now it's up to him to negotiate terms with his new
club. The 28 year-old right-back was not seeing regular action for the
champions who can field André Ooijer, Ernest Faber and Rob Wielaer
(recently returned from Den Bosch) in the same position. |
| PSV
and RKC agree price for Michael Lamey |
15 June 2001
|
| PSV
and RKC have agreed the transfer fee for defender Michael Lamey. The 21
year-old right-back has still to talk terms with his new club but it
should be a question of formality as he's already made clear his desire to
play in Eindhoven. He will continue to play and ripen in Waalwijk next
season in preparation for the move to the current Dutch champions. |
| PSV
sign Vennegoor of Hesselink |
14 June 2001
|
| PSV
have finally agreed terms with Twente (who've been paid in the region of
€9,08 million Euros) and have signed Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink on a
contract for 5 years. The 22 year-old had been with the Tukkers for the
last 5 seasons, and will be reunited with his buddy Arnold Bruggink. |
| PSV
and Vennegoor of Hesselink close to deal |
11 June 2001
|
| PSV
and Twente are close to agreeing the transfer of the Tukkers'
international striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to Eindhoven. It's going
to cost the champions between €9,8 and €11,34 million Euros to sign
their replacement for Ruud van Nistelrooy (off to Manchester United).
They're also looking to beat Anderlecht to the gun and add Michael Lamey
to the squad, allowing him to ripen for another year at his current club
RKC (as they're also doing with Groningen's Arjen Robben) before bringing
him to Eindhoven. |
| PSV
interested in Ipswich's Martijn Reuser |
08 June 2001
|
| According
to 'English sources' PSV are showing a sudden interest in Ipswich Town's
Martijn Reuser and have supposedly offered close to €10 million Euros
for him. The Premier League side have qualified for the UEFA Cup next
season and look unlikely to let the 25 year-old former Ajax and Vitesse
midfielder go. |
| Vennegoor
move to PSV looks unlikely |
08 June 2001
|
| The
current negotiations between PSV and Twente concerning the transfer of the
Tukkers' Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink looks to have reached stalemate. The
champions are simply unwilling to meet the price asked for the tall
international striker and the deal could fizzle out in the next week or
so. |
| Jonas
Kolkka to leave PSV |
05 June 2001
|
| Finnish
international Jonas Kolkka has been told that his contract is not going to
be extended at PSV. The former Willem II winger has been the
subject of Aston Villa's interest, although trainer John Gregory has gone
as record as saying he's not going to be buying the Fin this summer, but
the 26 year-old would prefer to stay in Holland. |
| Mark
van Bommel misses Estland match |
01 June 2001
|
| PSV's
midfielder Mark van Bommel will not be travelling to Estland for
tomorrow's crucial World Cup qualifier. He broke a toe in his left foot
during the Amstel Cup final against Twente and, although it was originally
hoped that he would still be able to play, the injury is going to mean
he'll have to watch the match on tv. |
| Vennegoor
too expensive for PSV |
29 May 2001
|
| Van
Bommel signs up for another year |
26 May 2001
|
| PSV
captain Mark van Bommel has signed an improved contract with the club till
2005. The 24 year-old international (1 goal in 7 appearances) joined the
club in July 1999 from Fortuna and has scored 13 goals in the 65 games
he's played. |
| Van
der Weerden to leave PSV |
25 May 2001
|
| Chris
van der Weerden's agent Rob Jansen is looking for a new club for the 28
year-old PSV right-back (whose contract runs out in 2002). Ernest
Faber and André Ooijer have kept him out of the 1st team for most of this
season (he's played 10 games). He made his Ere Divisie debut in 1990/91
for NEC, moved to Vitesse in 1994 and left for PSV a year later. |
| PSV
and Groningen seal Robben deal |
25 May 2001
|
| PSV
and Groningen have more or less completed the deal involving the
sale of Arjen Robben. The 17 year-old striker will become the most
expensive teenager in Dutch footballing history if the deal goes through -
Groningen can expect between €3,6 and €4,5 million Euros on their bank
account and a share in any future transfer fee if the youngster gets sold
by PSV. The most paid previously for a teenage player was the €3,4
million Euros Ajax paid Sampdoria for Clarence Seedorf in 1995. |
| Twente
win Cup Final after penalty shootout |
24 May 2001
|
| Today's
Cup Final is the golden opportunity for the
"Tukkers" to sneak into the UEFA Cup and
simultaneously thwart PSV's attempt at the double. 32,000 Twente fans had
travelled to the Kuip for the match and there had been the predictable
pre-match clashes in the streets of Rotterdam. The match got off in
beautiful sunshine with the vocal enthusuiasm of the Twente fans marred
only (at least for the tv-viewing public) by the sound of what sounded
like something rattling it's cage (it was a sound to recur throughout the
match - boring!). Waterreus showed why he needed to play/was needed today
with a great 3rd minute save of a Scott Booth shot and there were a couple
of early chances for Van Nistelrooy (plus a couple of yellow cards for
PSV). Some of the Twente tackling was also verging on the illegal and it
was clear that this was going to be a tough match. On the half hour
Waterreus saved another Scott Booth advance, smothering the ball and, soon
after, Kezman had a go with his right foot. The game flowed backwards and
forwards with plenty of attacking moves on both sides - Twente did well to
absorb so much of the Eindhoven attack while still creating its own
chances. Hofland missed narrowly with a header close to the end of the 1st
45 minutes ... halftime 0 - 0.
Twente had started the match in
confident mood and did the same in the 2nd half but PSV picked up their
pace once more and Van Nistelrooy missed narrowly as the champions
launched a series of menacing attacks. He then hit the dirt in the
box as Sander Boschker dived for the ball but there was no penalty given.
Twente came back with counters - Van der Laan had a clear shot but it went
wide. With half an hour to go the match was reaching a peak both on
(in terms of the on pitch struggle and niggling between the players) and
off (in terms of thethroats and deep lungs of the Tukker legions).
PSV exerted increasing pressure on the 'Tukkers' during the remainder of
the 90 minutes - Van Nistelrooy played a long and deep ball through to
Rommedahl who returned the favour with a cross which Ruud headed almost
into the Twente goal. Kolkka (substituting for Mateja Kezman who'd been
wasted on the wing) had a great close range shot turned away by the
lightning reflexes of Boschker. Both goalies were on real good form today.
As the match went into injury time Rommedahl went on a solo mission on the
edge of the area, letting fly with a blast which went over and Kolkka went
just wide seconds later.
Extra time - PSV threw everything
into the search for the Golden Goal and dominated extra time - of the many
chances Van Bommel's shot past the post was the best. It seemed to be
simply a question of time now before PSV would deliver the killer punch.
Van Nistelrooy went down again in the box and again he
didn't get a penalty - it just wasn't his day (Twente's Spira Grujic had
done a great job during the match of neutralizing him and Ruud himself
seemed to be in search of too much personal glory). 120 minutes of
football wasn't enough and so, for the first time since 1964, the Cup
Final was going to be decided by penalties. Vennegoor of Hesselink missed
the 1st for Twente, Heubach missed the 3rd (Twente were now 1 - 3 down and
it looked impossible for them to come back - but they did), Boschker
stopped De Jong's shot and now it was Waterreus who was going to take the
last and possible winning spot-shot ...Boschker stops it!!!! The shots go
on and Boschker saves the next one to give the Tukkers the
cup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brriilliiaanntt!! Three terrific saves from
Sander Boschker give the 'Tukkers' a dramatic Cup victory. I usually
hate penalty shoot-outs but this was a great one.

|
| Hofland
and PSV extend contract |
22 May 2001
|
| Kevin
Hofland has extended his contract with champions PSV for one more year
till 2006. The 21 year-old international is happy at the club and the fact
that so few players are leaving Eindhoven gives him plenty of hope for
success next season. |
| PSV
want Fatik Sonkaya |
21 May 2001
|
| PSV
have their eyes on Fatik Sonkaya as the ideal replacement for their 37
year-old Danish defender Jan Heintze player would then play in the
left-back position (he's currently playing right-back). The 19 year-old
was o loan to VVV last season but has played all his 23 games this season
for Roda. |
| PSV
sign up youth talents |
21 May 2001
|
| PSV
have signed up some young talent - 17 year-old Paul Verhaegh, 18 year-old
Robert van Boxtel and 19 year-old Kevin Filles have all been given
contracts for 3 years. The Belgian youth international Filles plays for
Sint Truiden has been added to the A1 squad while Verhaegh (who came from
VVV but has been with PSV for 3 years now) and Van Boxtel have both played
for Holland's Under 17s. |

| PSV
and Van Bommel close to new deal |
20 May 2001
|
| PSV
and Mark van Bommel are close to signing a new and improved deal which
binds him to the club until the end of next season and then allows the 24
year-old international to leave the club for an already agreed transfer
fee. |
| Arjen
Robben ready to sign for PSV |
20 May 2001
|
| Groningen's
youth star Arjen Robben is close to signing a contract worth €4 million
Euros with PSV for 5 years. He's staying at Groningen while he finishes
school and develops a little more as a player next season before making
the move to Eindhoven in 2002. |

| RBC
lose again...this time to PSV 1 - 2 |
11 May 2001
|
| RBC
are already resigned to relegation and PSV are already Champions - so the
result was pretty much a foregone conclusion (only 5,000 turned out to
watch). In an uninspiring PSV performance Mateja Kezman scored with a
spot-shot in the 21st minute but Damiën Hertog drew the Roosendaalers
level in the 39th. A Mark van Bommel goal in the 55th gave the visitors
the lead once more and was sufficient to clinch the points (not that they
need them). The win means they are 31 games without defeat and, if they beat De Graafschap next week, they equal the record they set
under Hans Kraaij in 1985/86. An away draw at NEC the week after
will give them a new record for the books. RBC also created a record as
they suffered their 26th defeat of the season - the previous record of 25
defeats was shared by FC Den Haag (1981/1982), De Graafschap (1981/1982),
DS ’79 (1983/1984), Heracles (1985/1986) and VVV (1991/1992). |
| Injury
is blow for Waterreus |
10 May 2001
|
| Ronald
Waterreus tore a calf-muscle in his right leg during last Sunday's match
against Heerenveen and a scan has shown that the injury is more serious
than originally thought. He still desperately wants to play in the final
of the Amstel Cup against Twente on May 24th but runs the risk of
complicating the injury and being out of action for 6 weeks. It looks as
though 18 year-old stand-in goalie Gino Coutinho will defend goal for the
remaining matches of the season. |
| PSV
suspend use of supplements |
10 May 2001
|
| PSV
have announced that they are to stop using the dietary supplements
suspected of contaminating Edgar
Davids' and Frank
de Boer's blood with the banned substance nandrolone. Although
tests carried out independently by the Eindhoven club (who were
'supplying' the national squad) and the Davids' camp have shown no
evidence of the 'drug' in the 'vitamins', the club have decided it would
be sensible to halt their use until the whole affair has been clarified.
In the meantime the Dutch FA (KNVB) has announced that it will also be
launching an investigation into all food and supplements 'administered' to
players. |
| PSV
to add Lamey and Van Barneveld? |
08 May 2001
|
| PSV
are casting their net wide in the search for new talent and have set their
eyes on RKC's Michael Lamey and Fortuna's Joos van Barneveld. 19 year-old
Lamey is a right back while 20 year-old Van Barneveld is a central
midfielder (and used to playing in Mark van Bommel's position). The deal
with Groningen for the transfer of Arjen Robben should also be completed
this week. In the meantime the Eindhoven club are also making it easier
for a group of players to leave so that the squad can be reduced in
numbers as part of a cost-cutting operation - Theo Lucius, Jürgen Dirkx,
Ernest Faber, Chris van der Weerden and Robert Fuchs (already
on loan to De Graafschap) have been told they can all leave. |
| 'Make
your mind up time' for Van Bommel |
07 May 2001
|
| PSV
have given Mark van Bommel 2 weeks to decide whether he's going to stay
with the club or not - the negotiations for a new contract have hit an
obstacle, namely that the striker wants a clause put in the contract
allowing him to leave as soon as a suitable foreign club makes an offer.
This is totally unacceptable to both chairman Van Raaij and trainer Gerets
and has resulted in this ultimatum. |
| PSV
party after 3 - 0 against Heerenveen |
06 May 2001
|
| A
draw will be enough for PSV tothe champagne (which has been on ice since
last weekend's missed opportunity to seal the Championship) and start the
celebrations planned for this afternoon. Heerenveen would love to come
away with a win and boost their ranking in a bid to qualify for the
Intertoto tournament this summer (with it's prize of European football
next season). A win would take them past Willem II into 8th place on 47,
closing the gap with RKC to 3 points. Van Nistelrooy started on the bench,
giving Arnold Bruggink a chance to team up with Kezman again. Eric Gerets
wanted to reward the players who'd been in the team for most of the sesaon
with the chance to play in the deciding match of the title race. Bruggink
paid back the trust with a goal in the 33rd, pouncing on a defensive
blunder, and making it look easy. The match was not of a high level but that will not worry
the Champions as they win their 16th Championship title - they will be
glad that the scoreboard looked festive enough after Van Bommel scored in the 65th and Kezman in the
69th minute to make it 3 - 0 . It was yet another example of PSV's superiority this season
and a fitting way for the team to clinch the
inevitable title and kickstart the party which will undoubtedly continue till deep
in the night.

| Misconduct
Alex Ferguson angers Van Raaij |
03 May 2001
|
| PSV
chairman Harry van Raaij is said to be well and truly angry about Sir Alex
Ferguson's behaviour during the transfer of Ruud van Nistelrooy. Comments
made by Manchester United's boss that it would be better for the striker
to finish off his recuperation/training with him in England have
infuriated the PSV supremo so much that he has demanded all the money
involved in the sale (€30,4 million Euros) by July. For all the gossip
see onefootball.com's "interview" at http://www.onefootball.com/index.phtml?page=fullstory&country_id=33&newsid=82157 |
| PSV
want to keep Van Bommel |
01 May 2001
|
| PSV
are negotiating terms for a new contract with team captain Mark van
Bommel. There are several other clubs who'd like to add the midfielder to
their collection but the champions-to-be have little to fear - he's
undoubtedly going to sign for an improved deal. |
| Nikifirov
misses rest of season |
30 Apr 2001
|
| PSV
will be without Yuri Nikifirov for the rest of this season - he
injured himself in training and it's going to be few weeks before he's
fit for duty. |
| Willem
II hold PSV to 1 - 1 draw |
28 Apr 2001
|
| If
PSV win it seals the Premiership title for them and gives them a huge
psychological advantage to take into the Amstel Cup Final in the KUIP -
can they do the double??!! The match got off to an exciting start as
both teams went on the attack. There were chances on both sides- Kezman
and Van Nistelrooy both missed greatngs for the visitors, Tarik
Sektioui and Tom Caluwé for the home team. Kevin Hofland headed in ther from a Bruggink corner in the 25th - unfortunately for him he also
earned himself a yellow card which he means he'll miss the next match
against Heerenveen in Eindhoven which could well be the title
winning game. There could easily have been
4 or 5 more for each team before the break but for the lack of sharpness in the finishing
department. Willem II's Tom Caluwé equalized in the 34th from a nicely
curved freekick - the
champagne will have to wait. |
| PSV
want Vennegoor of Hesselink |
28 Apr 2001
|
| PSV
have told FC Twente that they'd like to buy international striker Jan
Vennegoor of Hesselink - the price asked for the 22 year-old is believed
to be €11,34 million Euros. He would be the Eindhoven side's replacement
for the Manchester-bound Ruud van Nistelrooy, who actually
recommended they buy him. |
| Van
der Doelen on hire to Twente |
27 Apr 2001
|
| Björn
van der Doelen is to be hired out to FC Twente next season. The 24
year-old midfielder is a product of the youth training system in Eindhoven
and was originally going to be lent out to the Enschede club last season
but chose instead to fight for a place in the 1st team at PSV. He's seen
little action for them, appearing once in the lineup against Groningen and
substituting 8 times (a total of 177 minutes). It will be the 2nd time
he's gone on loan to another club - in 1997/98 he played for Standard
Luik. |
| Ruud
signs for 5 with Man United |
23 Apr 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy has signed a contract with Manchester United for 5 years.
The 24 year-old striker had measured up to the critical gaze of Alex
Ferguson and passed the obligatory medical examination. It
was only a question of what the English club would be prepared to pay for
his talents - we know the answer now... it's €30,4 million Euros. He
began his career at Den Bosch (making his professional debut in the match
against ADO Den Haag on May 3rd 1994, went to Heerenveen
and has been with PSV since 1998. In total he's made 163 professional
appearances (scoring 92 goals) and played in 10 matches for Oranje
(scoring just the once). |
| Van
Nistelrooy passes Man United medical |
23 Apr 2001
|
| It
looks as though the transfer of Ruud van Nistelrooy will be finalised this
week now that the 24 year-old striker has passed Manchester United's
medical examination. Special attention was paid to his right knee - the
injury last year put an end to the transfer deal set up with the
Mancunians at the time. The exact terms of the contract will be finalised
shortly and we could well see a contract signed later this week. |
| Twente's
Fred Rutten new PSV youth trainer |
23 Apr 2001
|
| PSV
set Man United Van Nistelrooy deadline - 10 days |
21 Apr 2001
|
| Manchester
United have been given 10 days
to make up their minds about Ruud van
Nistelrooy - after that they lose their exclusive negotiating rights with
the player. Representatives from both clubs met with the 24 year-old
striker's agents yesterday after the match aginst RKC. |
| Coutinho
signs 2 year contract with PSV |
21 Apr 2001
|
| Reserve
goalie Gino Coutinho has signed his first professional contract with PSV.
The club's A1 junior keeper has been with the club since 1991, is
currently acting as reserve goalie since Patrick Lodewijks injury and is
also goalie of choice for the Dutch Under 18s. PSV also recently bought
Emmen's Jelle ten Rouwelaar (he joins their squad next season) - the idea
being to prepare Coutinho and Ten Rouwlaar to take over 1st team and
reserve team goalkeeping duties in the future. |
| PSV
beat RKC 3 - 1 |
20 Apr 2001
|
| PSV
are pretty much secure in the knowledge they'll be champions but, as the
end of the season gets closer, the other clubs at the top are jostling for
those all-important positions which can earn them European football next
season. The Waalwijkers are in 5th, only goal difference separates them
from Roda in 4th, and well aware that every point counts. Van Nistelrooy
had an early chance but was denied by goalie Rob van Dijk. It's been a while since Mateja Kezman added to his score for
the season so he'll undoubtedly be pleased to get one tonight in the 26th
minute. After a typical Kezman dribble, which threatened to fizzle out, the ball found its
way to Van Nistelrooy who passed it to the Yugoslav to finish off. Johan Gudjonsson
equalized in the 55th for the visitors with a terrific shot. PSV piled on
the pressure and, ironically, only decided the result when Ruud and
Bruggink were replaced. A quick one-two of goals in the last
10 minutes from Theo Lucius (80th) and Mark van Bommel in the 82nd minute
(a solo rush at goal through the RKC lines) delivered
the final k.o. and increases PSV's lead over Feyenoord to 14 points. For
the Waalwijkers it was their first defeat since December 20th when they
lost to Utrecht. Manchester United were again represented so maybe the
sale's on?!? |
| PSV
in defensive problems against RKC |
20 Apr 2001
|
| PSV
will miss key defensive players against RKC tonight - André Ooijer, Yuri
Nikifirov and Jan Heintze are all injured and Adil Ramzi has gone to join
the Moroccan squad. |
| Nikifirov
injured in training |
18 Apr 2001
|
| PSV
could well have to miss Russian international defender Nikifirov this
coming Friday in their provincial derby against RKC Waalwijk (both clubs
come from Brabant province). The 30 year-old injured his ankle in a clash
with Eric Addo during training and has to go to hospital to find out how
serious the problem is. |
| Vitesse
and PSV in goalless draw |
15 Apr 2001
|
| PSV
are more or less assured of the league title with their 10 point lead over
Feyenoord and have secured themselves a place in the Cup Final with their
defeat of Heerenveen last Wednesday. Vitesse
went out to Twente on Thursday in a penalty shoot-out which left them
with a hangover to shift today. Both teams seemed more interested in not
losing than actually winning which meant a poor 90 minutes entertainment
for the crowd. Trainer Ronald Koeman had chosen to make a few changes to
the Vitesse lineup which meant less firepower upfront. The match was
played out predominantly in midfield, PSV failed yet again to impress and
seem to be conserving their energy. The home team's defence kept Ruud van
Nistelrooy and Mateja Kezman at bay - the most exciting moment was when
Adil Ramzi's shot passed Edwin Zoetebier only to hit the post. Despite
plenty of 2nd half substitutions on both sides in an attempt to liven
things up the match fizzled out without a goal on the board. |
| PSV
in Cup Final after 1 - 3 against Heerenveen |
11 Apr 2001
|
| A
match of contrasting techniques this, the home side the team of long balls
and counters, the visitors exhibiting the craft of combinations.
Heerenveen had a terrific chance to take an early lead and turn on the
heat in this first cup semi-final when a defensive blunder by Nikifirov
gave Allbäck the chance in theng minute to beat Waterreus but he
played the ball just a little too long for himself to score, managed to pass it to
Lurling who was left with too shallow an angle to be able to get it into
the net. Still, it was a
nice hors-d'oeuvre -would the rest of the match be as appetising?
Theng quarter of an hour saw a rather insecure-in-defence PSV -
another error, this time by Hofland gave the Frieslanders another shot at
goal and Allbäck, always looking dangerous, shot wide. By the second
quarter of the match though the Eindhovenaars started to wake up and
became increasingly threatening at the Heerenveen end. Heerenveen created
more and better chances during the last stage of the 1st half but, after a
Van Bommel freekick, it was Ruud van Nistelrooy who shot his team into a
rather undeserving 43rd minute lead when he put away a ricochet from a
goalmouth scramble. The Abe Leenstra stadium rocked as their team almost
had an equalizer in theng minute of the 2nd half when JeffreyTalan had the
perfect opportunity to score , but hit it wide. The tempo was higher than
before the break as the home team tried to put their opponents under
pressure. To the dismay of their fans it was Ramzi who tapped in a
2nd goal in the 54th minute to pour cold water on Heerenveen's efforts. It
was going to be a true test of Friesland character if they were to turn
the match around. The teams will face each other once more this season in
Eindhoven on May 5th - a match which could well prove to be PSV's
championship winner. Rommedahl was substituted by back-from-injury Bouma
and an anonymous Kezman was replaced by Bruggink for the last 15 minutes as the Ere
Divisie leaders looked increasingly relaxed and in control while the
northerners struggled to claw their way back into the match - they lacked
a bit of luck tonight and the opposition's extra class was, in the end,
telling. Lurling finally got one back in the 81st but Ruud was there with
an immediate reply in the 82nd to make it 1 - 3 and almost got a hattrick
soon after as he broke free and charged down on Hans Vonk but was denied.
Lurling wriggled through into the penalty box but missed the net as the
clock ticked off the remaining couple of minutes. PSV now have their first
chance of winning the double in 12 years - their chances of achieving that
look better all the time. |
| Kezman
announces "I'm happy at PSV!!!" |
11 Apr 2001
|
| Mateja
Kezman has announced at a specially arranged press conference that he
plans to stay at PSV - he's happy with the club, thinks Erik Gerets is a
fantastic trainer and is of the opinion that PSV are one of the top ten
clubs in Europe. This will hopefully put an end to all the stories of a
possible move to Italy (Juventus were often named as being interested in
the young Yugoslavian striker, as well as many other top clubs). |
| €29,29
million Euros is price for Van Nistelrooy |
10 Apr 2001
|
| PSV
chairman Van Raiij has stated categorically that Ruud van Nistelrooy's
going price is €29,29
million Euros and he will not
be sold to Manchester United (or anyone else) for a penny, dollar, guilder
or Euro less than the striker's original price tag last year before his
injury out him out of action. As we wrote
yesterday, both Ruud and the club's primary concern is to achieve the
Ere Divisie title before negotiations ared with any interested
parties. |
| Gerets
sets Ferguson Van Nistelrooy deadline |
09 Apr 2001
|
| Eric
Gerets has told Alex Ferguson that he wants to know within 14 days whether
or not Manchester United are going to make PSV an offer for Ruud van
Nistelrooy. The Ere Divisie title is, to all intents and purposes, already
in the bag and, looking forward to next season, he needs to know whether
Ruud will still be a member of the squad. The trainer expects Sir
Alex will understand his predicament and cooperate in putting an end to
the current will he?, won't he? situation. For his part, Van Nistelrooy's
attention is focussed on the remainder of this season in Holland and he
doesn't want to be distracted from proving his return to form at the
highest level - which was on show yesterday, inspiring PSV to a 0 - 1
victory against Ajax. |
| Ajax
lose at home to PSV 0 - 1 |
08 Apr 2001
|
| Both
teams made some adjustments to their lineups for this encounter -
PSV's trainer Eric Gerets left Mateja Kezman out in favour of John de Jong
alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy, with Rommedahl and Ramzi on the wings.
Co Adriaanse had to reorganise to cope with the absence of the injured
Chivu and Machlas while Richard Witschge was given a chance to play so
that
young star Van der Vaart (with his newly signed
contract with the Amsterdammers) could take a rest on the
bench. He's tired after the league and Dutch Under 18 internationals he's
played so far this season. Manchester United's 'boss' Alex Ferguson had
flown over personally to take a good look at his next purchase Ruud
Nistelrooy - it can't be long now before he makes an offer for the striker
(who's been linked for so long to the English Premier leaders). PSV had to
work hard to maintain their unbeaten-in-the-Arena record with Ruud leading
an isolated existence up front, surrounded by Ajax defenders, while his
fellow-forwards De Jong, Rommedahl and Ramzi hung back in midfield. Ajax had more
possession (Witschge had a good match) but couldn't convert
that into goals, the young side looking tired and lacking a strong striker to make a dent in the
Eindhoven armour. After an hour's play Cedric van der Gun had a shot saved
and, in the last 10 minutes, Ajax finally tested Ronald Waterreus with
shots by Galásek, Wamberto and substitute Van der Vaart who fired off a
rocket but the PSV goalie was his
usual alert self. The visitors didn't create manyngs either - Van
Nistelrooy missed with an early shot which went over and another went just wide after 30
minutes. The
one really fluent move they put together led to Moroccan international Adil
Ramzi's goal in the 53rd and from then on the visitors were satisfied to
hang on to their narrow advantage - they are now 10 points ahead of 2nd
placed Feyenoord who lost at NAC. |
| PSV
miss Bruggink against Ajax |
06 Apr 2001
|
| PSV
will be without Arnold Bruggink when they visit Amsterdam on Sunday - he's
been out injured for a while and lacks match fitness. The Ere Divisie's
top scorer Mateja Kezman could be dropped as he didn't perform well
alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy in the last league match and may be replaced
by John de Jong, while André Ooijer is also out of action. |
| Ruud's
back in 2 - 1 for PSV against Twente |
31 Mar 2001
|
| The
1st half was mediocre and the home team had problems dealing with the
visitors' organised aggression. Their frontline was strangely silent,
Kezman oddly anonymous - Giorgi Gakhokidze provided the only real
highlight of the 1st 45 minutes when he hit the wooodwork only to be
replaced by Jonas Kolkka. Ruud Nistelrooy's back though, make no mistake,
repaying Geret's faith and saving PSV's bacon tonight with a goal in the 53rd minute, ticked in after
Rommedahl fed him the ball, followed in quick succession by another 7
minutes later, a Jonas Kollka cross blasted into the net on
the hour. They were his first goals since February 2000 and will have felt
fine even if the team's performance was well below par. Twente did their
best in the closing stages to snatch a point and heat things up - and they
had hope after Scott Booth got an out-of-the-blue goal in the 72nd. PSV
held on however to consolidate their no.1 position. |
| UEFA
lenient with PSV |
22 Mar 2001
|
| UEFA
have handed out a light sentence to PSV for the near pitch invasion of
last Thursday's UEFA Cup quarter final against Kaiserslautern. They have
to play at least one of their European matches next season at neutral
venue which is a minimum of 100 kilometers distance from Eindhoven. Eric
Gerets is the hero of the hour - it was undoubtedly his quick thinking
that has saved the club a lot of money and bad publicity. |
| Juventus
want Kezman |
21 Mar 2001
|
| It's
rumoured that Italian giants Juventus are preparing to offer a massive
€22,690,000 Euros for PSV's top scorer Mateja Kezman. They will have to
fight off Barcelona, who have also shown interest in the former Partisan
Belgrade player. Whether the offer will actually be made and whether PSV
will sell is something else - it is tempting but could undermine the
club's desire to stay at the top in Holland and to do better next year in
Europe. |
| PSV
fans barred from stadium - legal action to follow |
20 Mar 2001
|
| PSV
is to bar fans who tried to invade the pitch during last Thursday's UEFA
Cup match against Kaiserslautern. Some have already been identified from
video footage and photos taken - they will be getting the bad news soon.
They can also expect civil action in the courts to follow. |
| Koen
Garritsen moves to PSV |
19 Mar 2001
|
| Koen
Garritsen, A-junior at De Graafschap, is almost certain to sign shortly
for PSV. The contract will be for 3 years with an option for 2 more,
starting with the A-juniors in Eindhoven he still hopes to be playing at
least a few reserve team games next season. |
| PSV
sign ten Rouwelaar |
19 Mar 2001
|
| PSV
have signed Emmen's 20 year-old goalkeeping talent Jelle ten Rouwelaar who
joins the club in July 2002 on a contract for 5 years. |
| Revenge
for PSV against Utrecht 5 - 1 |
18 Mar 2001
|
| Utrecht
were paying the price for being the first team to play PSV after their
exit from the UEFA Cup last Thursday - PSV were in a mean mood and,
though missing Bruggink and De Jong, they were reinforced with
Van Nistelrooy and Kezman (missing against Kaiserslautern) and new face
Georgi Gakhokidze. The visitors were also missing frontman Gluscevic
which meant a bit less poke for them up front. The score wasd by
Youri Nikifirov in the 20th minute as the home team burst into action,
Dennis Rommedahl got the 2nd in the 26th and his 2nd in the 37th to make
it 3 - 0. The 2nd half witnessed more of the same - Van Bommel made it 4
- 0 in the 48th but Dirk Kuit managed to get one on the board for
Utrecht in the 61st. Mateja Kezman scored the 5th in the last minute to
make it 5 - 1 and making him the Ere Divisie's top scorer on 21. |
| PSV
await UEFA verdict Wednesday |
16 Mar 2001
|
| After
last night's pitch invasion PSV can only speculate as to what Wednesday's
decision by UEFA will bring in terms of punishment for them. Chairman Harry van
Raaij is confident that it will take the form of a sizeable fine and a
number of European matches to be played on neutral ground. However, there
was considerable crowd trouble during the PSV - Anderlecht match as well and
in the away match against Kaiserslautern lots of objects were thrown on
the pitch by PSV supporters - there was a tangible them-us, Dutch-German
confrontation going down. So a more severe punishment could be on the
cards. Certainly the atmosphere last night was charged and of the negative
variety compared with the previous evening's Amstel Cup encounter at
Heerenveen which had such an old-fashioned 'competitive' feel about it.
You can tell a lot (obviously, of course) about a club's following from
its chanting, its hunting songs and the difference between the 'songs' on
Wednesday and those on Thursday said it all! Those from Friesland were
much more musical (not that it's an adjective I would normally use in
relation to crowd chants in football). |
| Pitch
invasion drama in Eindhoven
PSV Kaiserslautern 0 - 1 |
15 Mar 2001
|
| The
Germans started the match knowing that PSV had to score at least 2
goals and that an away goal would make it very, very difficult for PSV. So they were content to let the Dutch come at
them, could
afford to dig in at the back and wait for the chance to counter. PSV
settled down and started putting the moves together - Bruggink had the
first decent chance in the 15th minute from close by but the shot wasn't
really a problem for Koch, Van Bommel set up Nikifirov in the 20th who
blasted wide. The pressure was upped and in the 27th they came
close again in a goalmouth scramble but the ball never made contact with a PSV
head or foot. Minutes later Rommedahl escaped down the right wing but
floated one straight into Koch's arms followed by a close call from a
German freekick which was stopped only by Waterreus's reflexes. Koch was
being given a hard time by his old "fans" (the throwing of
orange peel and coins accompanied by plenty of whistles). Kolkka
missed one of those goals-that-you-know-should-go-in-if-you're-to-win-the-match goals in the 37th from another surge forward.
Unfortunately PSV were not as deadly as we had wished for up front and the extra firepower
of Kezman and Nistelrooy were definitely being missed. The will was there
but mind and body weren't quite in sync. The visitors came out after the
break looking
more dangerous and had an early chance but PSV kept pushing forward
earning them a penalty in the 51st when Van Bommel was brought down but
Bruggink's attempt was easily picked up by Koch. Nikifirov's shot in the 57th was his 3rd passionate strike of the match.
The nerves were also getting a bit ragged - a couple of PSV yellow cards
in quick succession, one for a clumsy block, the other for arguing with
the referee over a hands ball incident in the box (van Bommel). After
Waterreus had to act quickly in the 65th to collect a dangerous ball it was
time for Kolkka to go off, replaced by Ramzi. Waterreus was there again to
deal with a dangerous freekick, and a shot from the rebound, showing his
dependability but it all meant nothing as seconds later, in the 69th, he got a card
for a 'dangerous contact' within the box, bringing down Lokvenc and
getting a penalty against him. It was
taken with cool German precision and the stadium exploded as this drama
was followed by more - Van Bommel was shown red in the 73rd - it would
take a miracle now but instead it was a shock when the fencing gave way in
one corner and young angry fans poured onto the pitch. Gerets raced towards
them, telling them to get back before it suddenly threatened to get ugly. They were
finally coaxed into going back - but what now? The ref and other officials
plus most of the Germans had left the pitch - was this how it was going to
end, in this one overheated moment? After a short cooling off the referee decided to restart the
match - it was going to be a tough last quarter
of an hour. PSV did come close but their will was pretty much broken, down
to 10 men and the wind out of their sails - a night that will burn long
for all the wrong reasons in the Eindhoven memory and one which will cost
the club dear at the bank. |
| PSV
appeal UEFA decision fails - no Nistelrooy |
14 Mar 2001
|
| PSV's
appeal against UEFA's decision to bar Rud Nistelrooy
and Eric Addo from
playing in the remainder of the UEFA Cup competition has failed. The bar
was the result of an administrative blunder which registered the players
too late in order to qualify for the 2nd half of the tournament. PSV were
also fined for having Addo on the bench against Parma while he was not
eligible to play. The players will be appealing to the international
sports tribunal TAS in Lausanne in the hope they can take part in later
matches (if there are any). |
| Heintze
extends contract for 1 year |
14 Mar 2001
|
| PSV
defender Jan Heintze has extended his contract with the club till the end
of next season. The 37 year-old played for the club between 1982 and 1994
and since his return in 1999, helping them to win the league 5 times, the
FA Cup (KNVB Beker) 3 times and the European Cup 1. |
| PSV's
Ooijer to have early operation |
13 Mar 2001
|
| PSV's
André Ooijer is to be out of action for longer than the 4 weeks originally
thought after being injured during the UEFA Cup match against
Kaiserslautern. He was due to have an operation to remove a metal pin from
his ankle later in the year and that has been moved forward, so now it's
going to be 6-8 weeks before he's back and fit to play. |
| André
Ooijer out for 4 weeks |
09 Mar 2001
|
| PSV's
hangover after last night's defeat at the hands of Kaiserslautern is a
UEFA Cup suspension for Kezman and an injured André Ooijer. The defender
was thought to have broken a small bone in his left foot but it turns out
that it shot out of place and is now back where it belongs. He'll be out
for 4 weeks while he recovers. |
| Contract
extension for PSV and Rommedahl |
09 Mar 2001
|
| Danish
international Dennis Rommedahl is happy in Eindhoven and has extended his
current contract with PSV, which runs out in 2002, till 2005. The 22
year-old winger came to the club in 1996 (with a season at RKC in 1997/98)
and has silenced his critics during recent weeks with excellent play and a
couple of goals. He's convinced that if the current young team are allowed
to stay together and grow they will reap success - see Speaker's
Corner for a story on the mutual benefits of loyalty and a link to
another on constancy. |
| PSV
go down to penalty goal against Kaiserslautern 1 - 0 |
08 Mar 2001
|
| PSVd with plenty of pressure though the play was a bit scrappy with a
few too many hopeful balls - they were clearly missing their
midfield-motor van Bommel. There was plenty of effort being expended by
both teams as play moved at high tempo between both goalmouths but there
was too little control, frequent unforced mistakes - the pressure of being
in a quarter-final was showing. John de Jong had the best early chance tothe score for PSV from close-up after Rommedahl had floated a ball
across goal - but it went straight into the young keeper's hands. As the
German side started to look increasingly dangerous with their counters
they were given a penalty when Heintze held Marschall back in the box - an
easy goal from the spot for Koch. He also did a good job of marking Kezman out
of the game. This was the start of a very heated period of play
with yellow cards flying - by the end of the half, 4 for the home team and
2 for the visitors as plenty of players hit the deck. Ooijer and De Jong
had a header and a shot turned away by the young 20 year-old keeper
(who had a great game and made a couple of match-saving saves) as the half
came to a close - Faber came on to replace the injured Ooijer, who'll be
out for some time with a broken bone in his foot. A last
couple of chances came for PSV in injury time before the whistle went and
everyone could catch their breath. The 2nd half got off to a less hasty
start than the first, Kaiserslautern could afford to fall back in defence
and wait for the counter - let the visitors do the work. In the 51st Bouma
went off to be replaced by Kolkka. PSV really escaped in the 60th as Ramzy
was suddenly free - he only had to chip it over Waterreus but instead stroked
the ball into his hands. Lucius was replaced by Bruggink seconds later to
try and relieve Kezman and it almost immediately saw a result but Weidenfeller pounced on it before the Yugoslav could take a swipe at it.
PSV piled on the pressure now and the pace picked up once again, almost as
if the teams were having to decide the issue in one match. The
Eindhovenaars had most of the possession, and most of the play took place
in the Kaiserslautern half but it was often the Germans who looked closer
to scoring when they got the chance. Kezman was lucky not to get his 2nd
yellow card of the match close to time as his frustration at Koch boiled
over. A freekick goal disallowed for offside in the dying seconds of
injury time and a De Jong header turned away were the last moments of
excitement but it was Kaiserslautern's night. PSV will have to show their
class at home. |
| Blow
for Ruud as he misses tonight's UEFA match |
08 Mar 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy is dismayed to hear that he's barred from
playing in tonight's UEFA Cup quarter final meeting with Kaiserslautern.
An administrative blunder by PSV means that he's not eligible to
play tonight or in the remaining cup matches. After
all the hard work he's put in during the last 12 months to regain his
fitness he was obviously looking forward to be playing out for his team in
some of their most important matches. Such a mistake at this level of
football is rare, and for most of us simply mindboggling (despite
the soothing noises being made to the press)!
PSV are to appeal against the decision in the hope that UEFA will be
compassionate regarding such an administrative oversight. |
| PSV
miss Van Nistelrooy and Van Bommel against Kaiserslautern |
08 Mar 2001
|
| PSV
will have to succeed against German side Kaiserslautern without the help
of Ruud van Nistelrooy. It seems the club failed to register the striker
with UEFA in time for him to be fielded in the quarter final match.
Ghanaian defender Erik Addo will be missing for the same reason -
whata-mistaka-ta make. If that's not bad enough they will also be missing
midfielder and captain Van Bommel, who's suspended. Trainer Eric
Gerets will announce his squad at the last moment, much will depend on the
German side's lineup, and he has been experimenting with various combinations
during training this week. |
| PSV
and Roda goalless |
03 Mar 2001
|
| PSV
failed to make use of the chances they created in tonight's match - Ruud
van Nistelrooy, appearing in the 34th minute would have perhaps hoped for
a more event filled comeback and a goal would have been nice too! As it
was the visitors' tight defence held up throughout the 90 minutes, even
after Ramon
van Haaren got two yellow cards and departed in a controversial decision
which left them playing the 2nd half with only 10 men. The
general Roda opinion was that the 1st card belonged to Nurmela.
Ruud had a couple of near misses (one hit the post, the other was turned
narrowly away by Kalac) and Mateja Kezman got round the Roda defence once,
and past goalie Kalac, only to be denied by Regilio Vrede. Veteran Jan
Heintze missed by a fraction in the 73rd and Bruggink also hit the
woodwork in the 80th but the scoreboard remained empty. If Roda been more
concentrated in their counters the visitors might have caused a real upset,
as it was they dug themselves in deep and were content to leave Eindhoven
with the one point. Feyenoord have the chance to close the gap with the current leaders
to two points tomorrow if they beat Vitesse. |
| Van
Nistelrooy scores in reserve comeback |
02 Mar 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy made a successful comeback last night in PSV's reserves
match against Sparta 2 and scored 2 goals in PSV 2's 6 - 1 win. He was
substituted in the 79th minute and experienced no problems with the injury
which has kept him out of action for so long - in March last year he
injured himself in training and a month later tore ligaments in his right
knee. He will be in the 1st team lineup for Saturday's match against Roda
(coincidentally the last Ere Divisie team he faced before his injury). |
| Van
Nistelrooy ready for return? |
01 March 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy is to play for PSV's reserves against Sparta's reserve team
tonight. What the fans (some of whom have had special t-shirts with the
slogan "Return of 008" printed) want to know is -
will he be ready for the Ere Divisie match against Roda JC on Saturday?
Interest is running high - 4 television companies want to film tonight's
match! We wish Ruud all the best with his remarkably swift recovery! |
| PSV
advised to sell Kezman |
27 Feb 2001
|
| Ranko
Stoijic, the football agent who is at the centre of the bribes scandal at
FC Brugge in Belgium, has advised PSV to sell Mateja Kezman and make a
quick profit. He says that transfer prices will drop considerably once the
new system goes through and now is the time for the club to double the
€13.8 million Euros paid for the Yugoslavian when he came from Partisan
Belgrade last summer. Juventus and Barcelona have supposedly recently
offered up to €23.62 million Euros for him and, although Kezman has said
he wants to stay another year in Eindhoven, the temptation may prove too
great for him and the club now that Ruud van Nistelrooy is preparing to
return to action. |
| PSV
stay top after 1 - 2 away win at Feyenoord |
25 Feb 2001
|
| PSV
go home with their first win in the Kuip since May 19th 1986, confirming
their top of the table ranking, even if the victory wasn't a particularly
resounding one. Feyenoord dominated the 1st half, Bosvelt
and Pauuwe controlling the midfield with Korneev falling back and
acting as feeder of the
ball. His work gave Pauuwe, Jon Dahl Tomasson and Ebe Smolarek earlyngs which weren't pounced on (Kalou and Leonardo were missed today in
terms of upfront sting). So André Ooijer's early 6th minute goal for the
visitors came out of nowhere, blasted in from 25 meters, out of reach of
Dudek's hands. Korneev stayed in the dressing room with a hamstring
problem at halftime which broke up the Rotterdammers' rhythm in the 2nd half, allowing
PSV more opportunities to break. Which they did - the ball going from Mateja
Kezman via Lucius and Bouma to John de Jong who made sure of the 3 points in the 74th.
Patrick Pauuwe got a late consolation goal from a freekick for the
Rotterdammers in the 87th minute 1 - 2. Today's was their first home
defeat in 12 matches. |
| Parma
win 3 - 2 but go out. PSV in quarter finals! |
22 Feb 2001
|
| Apparently
Parma play at home three times a week, which goes some way to explaining
the meagre 11,000 fans in the stadium, but doesn't really excuse the lack
of interest in a big match such as this one. They started the match with 5 men
at the back, giving PSV plenty of room in midfield, as well as down the right
wing. After theng quarter of an hour PSV
began to relax and look more promising, the combinations looking better
all the time. Kezman had the first couple of
chances round the 20th minute, followed by an Italian counter which looked
very threatening, until it fizzled out in Waterreus's arms, and an offside
goal (Amoroso's work) which otherwise would have been a severe blow for the Eindhovenaars' morale.
In the 26th the Italians countered again and Van Bommel got a
yellow card for a deliberate push - he'll miss the quarter final. The Italians were
starting to look increasingly dangerous when PSV got their well deserved first goal - Vogel played a sneakily-simple-through-ball to Rommedahl who
made it look a piece of cake to score in the 32nd.
Parma's captain Cannavarro got a yellow card for felling Kezman in the
38th - he's got the reputation for it and has already collected a red card
in the tournament. Kezman got his revenge within minutes for PSV, pouncing with a goal in the last minute of the half -
Parma would now have to score 4 goals to knock them out. With Bruggink
injured, and likely to miss Sunday's Ere Divisie confrontation with
Feyenoord, it could herald an earlier-than-planned return of Nistelrooy.
Rommedahl had an early chance after the break and Johan Vogel
launched a missile which hit the woodwork in the 57th minute. Parma got a penalty
in the 63rd minute for some shirt pulling in the penalty area and
substitute Milosevic put it away for 1 - 2. They took heart, their fans
too and the match entered a period of Italian pressure - all of a
sudden Milosevic was there to head in for 2 - 2. The match had turned around
almost 180 degrees in 10 minutes, classic Cup drama was unfolding, the
last 20 minutes were going to be nailbiters. The Italians brought on
another striker, Montaño, and piled on the pressure which gave PSV the
chance to counter - Rommedahl almost got his 2nd before being replaced by
Kollka for the last 15 minutes. It was good to see a striker like Kezman
working really hard, running for every ball. would he get a 3rd for PSV?
Even if it wasn't going to be needed tonight, it would be nice all
the same. Parma got a late-injury-time strike by Montaño which made the
last couple of add-on minutes a real melodrama, including touchline skirmishes,
before the final whistle. PSV are in the quarter finals and meet FC
Kaiserslautern!!! |
| Bruggink
misses UEFA clash with Parma |
22 Feb 2001
|
| Arnold
Bruggink will miss tonight's UEFA Cup clash between PSV and Parma in Italy. He
picked up an injury during training and will have to watch his teammates
as they fight for a place in the quarter finals. His place will most likely be
taken by John de Jong. |
| Kezman
dreams of Barcelona |
21 Feb 2001
|
| Less
than 2 weeks ago, while reporting on the PSV-AZ match, we noted Mateja
Kezman's dream of playing for Barcelona. He felt the time wasn't right yet
and he'd seen things go horribly wrong for friends and countrymen who'd
made the move too soon or under the wrong circumstances. In an interview
given to a Spanish magazine he's said he'd like to make the move to Barca
by 2002, which means it could happen in the summer. It's been obvious for
some time that he views PSV as a stepping stone to greater things,
something he made clear when he made the move to Holland from Partisan
Belgrade last summer. The Eindhoven club has been a proving ground for
talented stars in the past - Ronaldo, Gullit and Koeman have all
played there before taking the next step in their careers. There was an
unnamed Spanish offer made in January while the squad was holding their
winter practice camp on the Grand Canaries (perhaps Real - a club he
doesn't want go to, Barcelona being absolutely his no.1 choice). It only remains
to be seen how long it will be before Barcelona make a move for the young
striker (with 20 goals in 21 games), although they have some problems to
be sorted out, like who's going to be the next trainer?, and Patrick
Kluivert has threatened to leave if the new man is one he can't work with.

| Van
Nistelrooy looking good in training |
14 Feb 2001
|
| Ruud
van Nistelrooy has completed his first successful training session with
PSV's first team without problems. He hopes to be able to get back to
match fitness in March after getting some match experience with the
reserves and taking part in some friendlies. |
| PSV
beat AZ 3 - 0 |
10 Feb 2001
|
| The
going was easy for the home team, allowing them to save some energy and
players (having the luxury of Wilfred Bouma and Adil Ramzi on the bench,
and missing Kevin Hofland and Ruud Nistelrooy) for
the coming UEFA clash with Parma. For Mateja Kezman it was business as
usual again as he scored in the 24th minute, showing exactly why PSV
were so right to gamble on the Yugoslav's talents when other clubs didn't
have the nerve to take the risk. His success in Eindhoven, where so many
other top strikers have been nurtured before departing for 'greater' things
has generated a lot of interest, including that of his future choice
Barcelona. He's not in a rush though, having seen other compatriots make
the move to Spain too soon and have their dreams end in ruins. AZ were in
trouble in defence and with injuries, missing Peter Wijker and Urvin Lee and
seeing Elbekay Bouchiba depart injured and Paul Matthijs had to have
stitches in a facial wound before he could continue. They were also reduced to 10
men when Abdelkrim El Hadrioui's desperate felling of Rommedahl got him sent off in the 31st. Arnold Bruggink scored
easily from the spot. PSV could really relax in the 2nd half and John de
Jong did the providing for Kezman to make
it 3 - 0 in the 78th minute. |
| Roda
out of cup after losing 0 - 2 to PSV |
07 Feb 2001
|
| The
attendance was a measly 8,900, a poor showing for a quarter final cup
match! PSV began the match in aggressive mood, André Ooijer earning
himself a yellow card within minutes of the whistle. The first chances
of the match were thrown away through poor finishing, Zafarin (for Roda)
and Bruggink missing a couple of times, Kezman's 'goal' ruled offside.
PSV finally got their act together in the 2nd half and struck through
goals by Rommedahl in the 47th and Arnold Bruggink in the 73rd. Roda
were caught between the need to prevent the visitors' strikers getting
too much space, and opportunity to score, while needing to have a go
themselves. The end result was their fans saw little of the team's
reputed fire and fighting spirit, no home goals, while PSV are now in
the semi-finals. |
| PSV
miss Hofland against Roda |
06 Feb 2001
|
| Kevin
Hofland will miss the Amstel Cup match tomorrow as a result of a hip
injury he's picked up - he had to be replaced in last weekend's league
match against Sparta. Hospital examination has so far failed to shed light
on the exact nature of the problem. |
| PSV
beat Sparta 1 - 0 |
04 Feb 2001
|
| The
decision to stage this match was a controversial one - the pitch was
totally waterlogged and made real football impossible. The match was also
a duel between the top scorers Mateja Kezman and Ali Elkhattabi. The
Moroccan striker had the first opportunity to show his skills but his
lobbed ball just bounced off the outside of the post. Kezman headed in the
only goal 4 minutes later from Jonas Kolkka's pass. The 2nd half was just
as impossible for the players as the 1st and, although Sparta kept
believing they could come back, it wasn't to be. |
| Eric
Gerets denies departure story |
01 Feb 2001
|
| PSV
trainer Eric Gerets has gone on record, in an after the match interview
last night, that the story being circulated (saying he is about to leave
PSV) is false. He explained that he'd received via-via an 'interesting'
offer from an 'interested' club but that there was nothing concrete. He's
happy with what he's achieving with PSV (who wouldn't) and that he has
every intention of completing his contract - at the very least. |
| PSV
beat Groningen 3 - 0 |
31 Jan 2001
|
| Groningen
held out for the first half hour, firmly dug in at the back, as PSV
pressed forward but failed to make an impression on the solid-as-a-rock
defence. An early header by Nifikirov went over in the 5th minute from a
Bruggink corner and Kolkka's shot was saved by Roy Beukenkamp. Despite the
visitors' tight defence (with close
marking, forcing PSV to probe patiently) it wasn't long before Mateja
Kezman was back in action again, scoring in the 35th minute. Johann Vogel
celebrated the recent signing of a new contract with a goal in the 41st.
The 2nd half was easy going for the home side - they had loads of chances
to score but the finishing was sloppy until Mark
van Bommel made it 3-0 in the 65th. Groningen's Erwin van der Looi got
sent off in the 75th after his 2nd yellow card, but even that wasn't
enough incentive to go on a goal scoring spree. The new young Brazilian
signing 18 year-old Marquinho came on for the last 10 minutes to make his
acquaintance with the crowd and the pitch. The valuable points go to
PSV, closing the gap with leaders Feyenoord (who lost at Heerenveen) to
two points. The 2nd half of the season is already hotting upo and it's
only just begun! |
| Kezman
hattrick as PSV smash RBC 6-0 |
27 Jan 2001
|
| Mateja
Kezman collected his 2nd hattrick in 4 days as PSV got their biggest win
this season. He got the ball rolling in the 10th and 19th minutes. After
that it was only a question of how many? Marcel Cas scored an own goal
just before halftime and Kezman got his third just after play kicked off
for the 2nd half. Arnold Bruggink got the 5th and 6th goals, a spot-shot
in the 69th and a strike in the 90th. It was an evening Oscar Moens in
goal for RBC will long remember and Kezman becomes top scorer on 16, 2
more than Elkhattabi and Nelisse. |
| Gerets
cleared in Belgian bribe probe |
27 Jan 2001
|
| The
Belgian FA's public prosecutor investigating the bribery affair at Eric
Gerets' former club FC Brugge have cleared him of any wrong doing. The
findings will be presented to FIFA who will decide what action will be
taken against the man at the centre of the bribery scandal Ranko Stoijic.
The Yugoslavian agent is a longtime friend of Gerets and the bribes
(attempts to motivate the technical staff at Brugge to buy 'his' players)
changed hands while Gerets was trainer at the club. He has consistently
denied any role in the affair since it came to light. |
| Vogel
and PSV extend contract till 2005 |
25 Jan 2001
|
| The
Swiss midfielder Johann Vogel has extended his contract with PSV till
2005. He's really happy at the club, where his strong partnership with
Mark van Bommel is the heart of PSV's midfield, and both he and his family
enjoy life in Holland. The decision was an easy one for him, he said, the
club's great and his future looks good in Eindhoven. |
| PSV
through to quarter finals 4-1 against Den Bosch |
24 Jan 2001
|
| PSV
finished this evening's game with the expected result against First
Division no.2 team Den Bosch. It took till the 38th minute of the 1st
half before Kezman put the no.2 of the Premier division ahead after Den
Bosch had done their best to limit the damage. kezman scored twice in
the 2nd half for his hattrick and Arnold Bruggink added a 4th. Mourad
Mghizrat put one on the scoreboard for Den Bosch close to the final
whistle to ease the pain a little. PSV now meet the winners of Friday's
Roda - Utrecht match. |
| Gerets
says give Van Nistelrooy time and space |
24 Jan 2001
|
| PSV's
fans have been warned not to expect too much too soon from Ruud van
Nistelrooy now that he's back in training after 10 months on the injured
list. Trainer Erik Gerets says there's no pressure to speed up his return
to action and both he and Ruud will decide when the time is right and
ripe. Ruud would love to make a few appearances before the end of this
season and everyone hopes he'll soon be a regular part of the team, even
with Bruggink and Kezman up front. In fact Gerets thinks it will make it
easier for Ruud to find his way back if there are two other strikers for
defenders to worry about and may also give Mateja Kezman morengs to
score than he's had. |
| Ferguson
still chasing Nistelrooy |
20 Jan 2001
|
| Manchester
United coach Alex Ferguson would still like to bring PSV's Ruud Nistelrooy
to Old Trafford. Now that it's public knowledge Ruud is back in training
Sir Alex has made clear he's still interested in buying the 24 year-old
striker. Last year's attempt by United to buy him fell through when he
refused to undergo exploratory surgery on his knee, which a week later
developed into the long term injury that has kept him out of action for so
long. As soon as he's declared match fit Ferguson will be knocking on the
door. |
| PSV's
Van Nistelrooy back in training |
17 Jan 2001
|
| PSV's
striker Ruud van Nistelrooy looked fit and well in his first training
session with the squad after being out of action since April last year. He
injured his knee in training only weeks after failing to pass a medical as
part of a possible move to Manchester United. All the best Ruud and we
look forward to seeing you in action soon! |
| Van
der Doelen wants to leave PSV a.s.a.p. |
15 Jan 2001
|
| Björn
van der Doelen, PSV's 24 year-old midfielder (who's been with the club
since the age of eleven), wants to leave the club a.s.a.p. He's only been
in the team for two matches this season, against Groningen and Manchester
United, and now wants to make a move in the hope of seeing more action and
gaining a regular place in a new team. |
| PSV
lose to Rosenborg 1 - 2 |
13 Jan 2001
|
| PSV
lost to Norwegian league leaders Rosenborg in the last game of their
training camp on Gran Canaria. Mark van Bommel put them ahead in the 2nd
half but Christer George scored 2 goals for the Norwegians to deny PSV 3rd
place in the practice tournament. |
| No
move for Mateja Kezman |
12 Jan 2001
|
| PSV's
Yugoslavian striker Mateja Kezman is staying with the club and is feeling
quite happy at the team's training camp on Gran Canaria. Apparently, an
offer has come from another club but he's not interested in a move at
present. PSV boss Van Raay has told the squad that if such an offer is
received at the club then the player concerned will be the first to hear
about it and decide if the offer is worth considering. |
| New
contracts for PSV's Vogel and Van Bommel |
12 Jan 2001
|
| The
midseason break is the time to assess progress so far and to look at
contracts and transfers. At PSV it means that Johann Vogel is about to
extend his contract with the club for another two years until 2005. His
colleague Mark van Bommel has been offered an improved deal if he adds an
extra year or two to his contract - he's currently signed up until 2004 -
but there are interested club(s) in Italy, so he's having a good think
before making a decision. |
| PSV
lose to Galatasaray 1 - 2 |
11 Jan 2001
|
| Both
teams were uninspired and so was the match. Bruggink scored for PSV, Hagi
for the Turkish side and Kevin Hofland an own goal to give Galatasaray the
victory. Kezman didn't appear for PSV as a result of his infected hair
follicle - but that's no excuse for losing in this fashion. We know it's
only a practice tournament but really, you have to be more motivated to
play football than this. |
| Matja
Kezman stays with PSV for Galatasaray match |
10 Jan 2001
|
| We
reported earlier that PSV's striker Mateja Kezman was going to come back to
Holland for medical treatment. He had an infected hair follicle on his
chin but, luckily for him and the team, the medical staff at the club's
training camp on Gran Canaria have sorted out the problem and he can stay
to take part in, or at least watch, tonight's match against Turkish side
Galatasaray. |
| Kezman
returns to Holland for treatment |
09 Jan 2001
|
| PSV's
young Yugoslavian striker Mateja Kezman has made an early return from the
team's training camp for treatment of a chin infection. Antibiotics have
not helped and the infection has become worse, necessitating hospital
treatment in Holland. |
| Robert
Fuchs returns on loan to De Graafschap |
06 Jan 2001
|
| The
PSV midfielder 24 year-old Robert Fuchs is to return on loan to Doetinchem
club De Graafschap. He began his footballing career at PSV, played for De
Graafschap between 1995 and 1999 on contract, was hired out last
season to them (not being sure of a first team place under Erik Gerets)
and now goes back for 6 months. He becomes the club's second reinforcement
since the winter break started, Vitesse's John van Brom being the other. |
| Claudio
goes back to Brazil |
05 Jan 2001
|
| PSV's
Brazilian forward Cludio is going back to Brazil as hired gun. After a
successful spell on loan to Vitorio Bahia last season, he returned to
Holland but, not seeing much 1st team action due to the good form shown by
teammates Kezman and Bruggink, he is returning to the Brazilian club for
the rest of this season. His current contract with PSV runs out in
2003. |
| AZ
lose to PSV 0 - 5 |
17 Dec 2000
|
| AZ
didn't put up much resistance this afternoon in the Alkmarderhout stadium.
The
young Yugoslavian striker Mateja Kezman was back in his usual goal hungry
mood today, putting PSV into an early lead after 7 minutes of play. André
Ooijer slipped the ball between the legs of the defence to make it 2-0 in the 31st and Marc van Bommel's 40th minute
chip over the head of Henk Timmer in goal gave
the visitors a bag full of insurance to take into the dressing room at the
break. AZ had looked a little better when Jamil Dibi came in for
Buskermolen, but that was before Van Bommel's goal and after that it was
PSV all the way. Kezman rounded off a nice piece of action with a 2nd for
him and Kolkka made it 0 -5. Only the 2nd home defeat of the season for AZ
(the other was earlier in the week against Vitesse) while PSV are doing
worse at home than away with 7, a beginning of the season defeat by De
Graafschap and a draw against RKC. |
| PSV
in draw at RKC Waalwijk |
13 Dec 2000
|
| This
was a disappointing match - both teams failing to put on an attractive
display of football for their fans. PSV were uninspired, RKC more than
willing but sloppy in their passing and finishing. Nonetheless they went
ahead after 10 minutes when Nikifirov's attempt to score was pounced on by
Rick Hoogendorp while goalie Waterreus hesitated to intervene. Kezman
failed to make any impression for the home team in the 1st half, missing
Bruggink's company up front. His replacement Adil Ramzi was equally
lacking. PSV finally got an equalizer just before halftime when Joonas
Kolkka's pass bounced off the defensive wall to land at John de Jong's
feet for a simple put away. In the 2nd half both teams had their
opportunities but failed to capitalise on them, Kezman had one dangerous
moment but hit the post. The result leaves PSV 3 points behind Feyenoord
who can increase it to 6 if they beat Fortuna. |
| Tough
UEFA Cup opposition awaits PSV |
12 Dec 2000
|
| The
draw for the next round of the UEFA Cup will provide PSV with a tough
opponent. They are in 9th place on the list of participating clubs (having
been relegated from The Champions League) and will meet either Barcelona
(another Champion's League 'relegee'), Parma, Internazionale, AS Roma,
Girondins Bordeaux, FC Porto, Slavia Praag or Celta de Vigo. The draw for
the next round takes place tomorrow (Wednesday). |
| Van
Raaij satisfied Gerets is innocent |
09 Dec 2000
|
| PSV's
trainer Erik Gerets has been called upon by chairman Eric van Raiij to
explain his relationship with Ranko Stoijic (footballers agent). There
is currently an investigation taking place in Belgium into the dealings
of the Yugoslavian agent, a long time 'friend' of the PSV trainer, who
'sold' players from FC Obilic (until recently owned by the Serbian 'war
criminal' Arkan) to Brugge (Gerets' old club). A story in Dutch daily
NRC Handelsblad has caused Van Raaij to invite Mr. Gerets in for
clarification. The PSV chairman has stated that Gerets has denied
any wrong doing or knowledge of the "crime"It seems more clubs
have bought players from Mr. Stoijic - we'll bring you up to date in the
coming days. |
| PSV
win 0 - 1 against PAOK Thessaloniki |
08 Dec 2000
|
| Rinus
Michels said once that football is war and the way this confrontation got
underway was confirmation of the primitive instincts lurking beneath the
surface of this 'sporting' (?) event. The Greek crowd were more than ready
to show their hostility, whistling at everyng move PSV made, getting
their knickers in a twist every time one of their players hit the dirt.
After starting in confident mood PSV were sorely tested by the 'climate'
in the stadium -
Bruggink was injured by a firework within the 1st 10 minutes, and so was
one of the linesman. That's going to cost the Greek chairman a pretty
penny - and he owes a few of his players some back pay as it is. The
Scottish referee was having to be as cool as the proverbial cucumber to
keep things under control in the stormyng. PSV got nervous after the
'fireworks' and PAOK had
the best chances early on, making the best of the tension, the hostile
atmosphere and the high tempo. They missed going ahead several times.
Waterreus was unimpressed by the atmosphere and any Thessaloniki balls to
come his way. There were some unnecessary tackles/fouls by PSV players,
perhaps a result of nerves, perhaps an attempt to intimidate or show that
they were not going to be intimidated. 17 PSV fouls against 6 for the
Greeks said a lot about the intimidate or be intimidated mood of the 1st
half hour (in total 26 fouls compared to 9 over the course of the match).
Bruggink got a yellow card for a high foot shortly after the 'firework' and Kezman
(who didn't see much goal mouth action) for a meaningless tackle from
behind. Finally PSV started to settle down and play some football, made
the most of the smallngs they created and were rewarded when a
clever shuffle and pass by Kezman on the edge of the Greek penalty area
gave Bruggink the chance to let fly with a determined and accurate 18
metre shot that hit the back of the net giving PSV a much needed
pre-halftime confidence booster. This seemed to
silence the crowd and dishearten the home team. The 2nd half was an easy
45 minutes for PSV who had little to be worried about. Thessaloniki were
unable to recover from the one Dutch goal and the chaos of the 1st 30
minutes of the match faded into the distance. The final whistle was a
relief after a less than entertaining 2nd half and the away goal gave Dutch European hopes for next season a
boost. |
| Rommedahl
ready to quit PSV |
05 Dec 2000
|
| Time
is running out it seems for Rommedahl and PSV. He says that he's had
enough time on the bench to think over his future and, despite a likely
offer to extend his contract with the club in the New Year, is ready to
leave. Bobby Robson brought him to Holland but under his successor Gerets
he is feeling literally left out. |
| PSV
in 2nd place after 1 - 2 win over Roda JC |
02 Dec 2000
|
| Eindhoven's
best were without Arnold Bruggink (5 match ban) and Kevin Hofland (one too
many yellow cards) and Erik Gerets had put on Ernest Faber for the latter
and Adil Ramzi up front to take over Bruggink's attacking role. They
started in fine fashion with 3 chances in the first 10 minutes - Van
Bommel shot wide, Ramzi's attempt went over and Mateja Kezman was denied
anner by Zeljko Kalic (favoured over Bas Roorda to look after goal).
Roda's trainer Sef Vergoossen decided on a one-to-one tactic and, apart
from when Anastasiou hit the crossbar, the rest of the 1st half was
man-to-man stuff. Neither side giving the other enough room to pass and
play the ball, except over really short distances. The crowd had to wait
until the 68th minute for goal action when Kezman shook off his chaperone
Regilio Vrede, turned and scored. Roda were now forced to change tactic
and substituted Tom Soetaers with Mark Luijpers, who went on the
offensive. The risk was understandable but gave PSV's Kezman the chance to
get his second in the 81st minute when he weaved round Fatih Sonkaya and
Kalic to find the back of the net. Davy Safarin scored within a minute to
give the home side hope and they threw everything they had in attack. It
was too late for Roda and their last attempts were a sign of desperation
and tiredness after Tuesday's trial against Vitesse. PSV's trainer Gerets
was pleased with the result, once more reaping the rewards of his belief
in his Rumanian striker Kezman. |
| Bruggink
gets 5 match ban - Hofland misses a match |
01 Dec 2000
|
| PSV's
Arnold Bruggink is to get a 5 match ban despite his appeal against the
decision. He received the "sentence" for an elbow jab handed out
to Sander van Gessel in the match against Heerenveen on November 18th.
Kevin Hofland also misses a match for his 4th yellow card of the season.
Erik Gerets has included Tomec Iwan and Claudi as replacements in his
squad for Sunday's match against Roda JC. |
| UEFA
fine PSV for misbehaviour fans |
29 Nov 2000
|
| The
UEFA have fined PSV 20,000 Euros for the violent outburst of a group of
fans during the Champions League match against Anderlecht. |
| PSV
make hard work of 2 - 1 against NAC |
26 Nov 2000
|
| The
visitors started with 5 men in defence - hoping to maybe go home with one
point- while PSV had been having trouble impressing in their home league
matches. Erik Gerets chose to field Adil Ramzi (showing good form
recently) rather than Rommedahl. Kezman and Bruggink were not making their
presence known up front and it was the Fin Joonas Kolkka who was the only
PSV frontman to harass NAC's goalie Gábor Babos. It took an own goal by
Penders in the 22nd minute tothe score but even that free gift
failed to liven up the mediocre action - Kezman had a header saved and
Kolkka 's went just wide. Rommedahl got his chance, replacing Ramzi, in
the 2nd half but the change didn't really improve matters. Earnest Stewart
(NAC's American forward) missed a golden opportunity after 5 minutes.
Rommedahl was put clear by Van Bommel in the counter but Kezman was ruled
offside. After 60 minutes NAC 's trainer Henk ten Cate made some changes
and his team went on the attack which gave PSV more room as well. After
Rommedahl missed another chance Kezman scored from a rebound in the 80th,
Babos unable to hold onto Van Bommel's shot. Penders repaid his own goal
of the 1st half with a ball at the right end of the pitch a minute later
to close the gap |
| PSV
punish PAOK Saloniki 4 - 1 |
24 Nov 2000
|
| The
match couldn't have got off to a better start for PSV. The packed house
(30,000) were well pleased when Bruggink scored in the 5th minute, and
Kezman added to his growing tally at the end of an exciting 1st 15 minutes
of cup football. Saloniki, who'd drawn 2-2 with Palanikaios (who
themselves had done so well against Man. United) last weekend were not looking
in good shape, unimpressive and lacklustre. Kezman (having already scored
4 goals last weekend) added another in the 44th. The 1st 15 minutes of the
2nd half were basically boring pictures of men passing a ball around in
the streaming rain. As unexciting as it gets in football. The Greeks
started looking more lively, though never really dangerous. All of a
sudden, there was a spark of life which turned into a flash of PSV action.
A good combination of passes gave Kezman the ball who slipped it to
Van Bommel to blast off a shot but the Greek goalie Tohouroglu tipped it over. A
couple of minutes later the poor chap was lying on the floor of his
penalty area after the same van Bommel charged for the ball and caught him
with his foot as he was gathering up the ball. Apart from the odd flurry
of activity the remainder of the match didn't live up to the 1st half's
promise of a deluge of goals. PSV certainly had the chance to put a lot of
goals away as a nice insurance to take with them to Greece - maybe the
rain dampened their goal lust. |
| PSV
unhappy with NOS and with Moroccan FA |
23 Nov 2000
|
| PSV's
Arnold Bruggink feels hounded by the press following the Dutch FA's
announcement of an investigation into the 'elbow' incident in last
Saturday's match against Heerenveen. In particular the Dutch public
broadcasting corporation, the NOS, has made him unhappy with its
constant screening of the action as caught live by their cameras. To add
to PSV's misery they face PAOK Saloniki without Kevin Hofland (match
suspension) and Adil Ramzi (he's playing for Morocco). Adil's absence has
incensed trainer Erik Gerets because other Moroccan players at Deportivo
La Coruña in Spain are being allowed to play for their club tonight (Erik
perhaps doesn't have the right friends in the right places that the
Spanish do). This evening's match against Libia is a friendly and Gerets
feels mistreated after the good relations PSV have maintained with the
Moroccan FA in the past. We haven't heard the last on this! |
| Heerenveen
no match for PSV 1 - 4 |
19 Nov 2000
|
| The
Friesian team have never won at home against PSV and, although last
season's meeting was a cracker, this match was only further proof of PSV's
continuing superiority and evidence of Mateja Kezman's growing confidence
up front for the Eindhovenaars. He scored a hat trick in the 1st half
(13th, 18th and 44th minutes) and a 4th in the 80th minute to put the
final nail in Heerenveen's coffin. In the 2nd half PSV allowed Heerenveen
into the match but had no real difficulties in coping and even had the
better of the scoring chances. Nurmela restored a little honour for
Heerenveen with a goal from a well hit freekick in the 85th minute. PSV
are now in 2nd place in the table and Heerenveen sink to 13th. Foppe de
Haan will be wondering if his magic has deserted him. |
| PSV
close the gap with Feyenoord 1 - 0 |
12 Nov 2000
|
| The
Premier Division has risen in importance on the PSV list of priorities
since their exit from the Champions League last Wednesday. A duel with
table toppers Feyenoord at home was a welcome opportunity to restore any
wounded pride remaining and a chance to close the points gap with the
Rotterdammers. In the first 45 minutes the home team failed at this, being
uninspired - the best chances went to the visitors - after 11
minutes Jon Dahl Tomasson's attempt found Feyenoord goalie Ronald
Waterreus's hands. And that was more or less the highlight of the
1st half. PSV's forwards were sloppy and Feyenoord's weren't sharp. In the
2nd half PSV started to show some life. Mateja Kezman was brought down in
the 78th minute and Bruggink put away the penalty shot. Feyenoord were
unable to respond so close to the end of the match despite various
substitutions. PSV achieved at least in part what they started out to do -
on the evidence of their play today complete restoration of honour will
have to wait. |
| Hofland
called up for Holland -Spain |
10 Nov 2000
|
| PSV
defender Kevin Hofland has been called on by Louis van Gaal for Tuesday's
friendly against Spain. Hopefully it will make up for PSV's exit from the
Champion's League last Wednesday when he was sent off. |
| PSV
and Anderlecht in terrific scrap |
09 Nov 2000
|
| Anderlecht
got the
match off to a cracking start as they surprised PSV with plenty of determination. The
first shock for PSV came as Crasson scored a header from a corner in the 9th minute.
Anderlecht looked in
better shape than PSV, who were weak in midfield, and were all over the home team. The tempo was high and got higher, the temperature kept
rising and the tackles tougher - it was a wonder at times that tempers
didn't flare. Kevin Hofland's defensive error in the 37th minute gave Anderlecht a second goal,
his back pass going straight to the feet of Didier Dheedene who gave it to
Koller to put away. Things
started to look desperate for PSV who would now have to score at least 3
goals to go through. After some substitutions the home side started to
play some real football and get the ball moving in their favour. Thank
goodness for them Ramzi scored their first goal in injury time of the 1st
half and they almost got another before the whistle. Johan Cruijff,
talking on Dutch TV during the break, made it clear that PSV would have to
get the midfield under control and take more risks if they were going to
tip the balance their way and win. PSV got the 2nd 45 minutes off to a
"shocking" start because that man Ramzi was on hand to
score again (the Anderlecht defence parting like the Red Sea to let him
slide the ball into goal) in the 2nd minute of the 2nd half. PSV were
suddenly looking self assured as they passed the ball around and set up
their attacks. For most of the 2nd half they outplayed Anderlecht who took a while to get over their shock but, once
they did, started to look more like the team of the 1st half. Baseggio had
a nice blast at goal in the 67th minute for Anderlecht and Bruggink struck
a mighty distance shot in the 71st. As the end drew near PSV looked
closer and closer to that elusive 3rd goal. After Bruggink had been denied
3 times by Anderlecht's goalie De Wilde, Ramzi
missed a perfect chance after a pass from Kezman in the 79th. Kevin
Hofland got his 2nd yellow card in the 89th minute and was sent off,
leaving PSV with 10 men. Almost literally in the heat of that moment
Anderlecht got a 3rd in the 90th minute when Koller headed on a ball to
allow substitute Souleymane Youla an easy put away goal. The match was
suddenly over, PSV are relegated to the UEFA Cup, Manchester United having
beaten Dynamo Kiev 1-0 so pushing the Dutch team into 3rd place in their
group. |
| PSV
win against FC Twente 2 - 0 |
05 Nov 2000
|
| PSV
began the match without Arnold Bruggink and Mateja Kezman but were still
too strong for Twente. They dominated the early part of the match and
could have scored several times - Van Bommel, Rommedahl and De Jong had
their chances but failed to make use of them. Joonas Kolkka and Dennis
Rommedahl on the wings were constantly racing past their opponents and
causing problems in front of the Twente goal. It wasn't long though before
Ramzi scored the first goal in the 10th minute. Almost immediately Jan
Vennegoor of Hesselink had the chance to equalize but was denied by Chris
de Witte's excellent defending. The home team then concentrated on keeping
Twente well away from their goal area, leaving Ramzi and Rommedahl to
occasionally have a go in attack. In the 2nd half, substituting Brazi for
Van der Paar, Twente made a better job of controlling the PSV forwards.
After an hour's football Brazi almost scored for the visitors from a
corner and Cairo saw his shot miss by a whisker. Kolkka missed a chance
for the home side before getting his second in the 67th minute and the
rest of the match was PSV's. Mateja Kezman got a yellow card for handling
the ball which was the only blemish on a sound performance by PSV |
| Bruggink
misses match with Twente |
04 Nov 2000
|
| The
PSV striker Arnold Bruggink will miss Saturday's match with FC Twente. He
is still suffering from a wound to his knee after last week's duel with
Ajax. Trainer Gerets wants to save him for Wednesday's Champions League
game against Anderlecht. |
| PSV
bring Vitesse back to earth 2 - 0 |
02 Nov 2000
|
| The
Dutch champions beat table toppers Vitesse, thanks to 2 goals from Jonas Kolkka, in a
match which didn't live up to expectations. The current league leaders
started as though they meant business but even when Kolkka had put PSV
ahead after 10 minutes they did little else but launch counter attacks.
PSV's goalie Ronald Waterreus had practically nothing to do all evening -
a limp celebration of his 250th league appearance. Maybe Vitesse had
used up all their fire in last week's thriller against Ajax. The 4-3-3
formation Ronald Koeman thought appropriate on paper didn't generate
attacking football on the pitch. In contrast PSV looked sharp and immediately
put their opponents under pressure - it wasn't long before Kolkka scored
the first goal. Unfortunately for everyone, after that goal the pace went
out of the game - Vitesse looked uninterested in a fight and PSV were
seemingly content to coast along. The spectating value dropped so low that
the 2nd half was a fault-filled show. Vitesse's men were not functioning
as they should, the wingers Sikora and Fortes had no wings and the long
balls which were sent to Bob Peters up front were not enough to get him past
Youri Nikiforov's defending powers. Despite various substitutions the
match remained a boring affair with a quick thrill at the end when the
Dane Dennis Rommedahl streaked past three defenders to see his shot
stopped by Edwin Zoetebier giving Kolkka the chance to slam in the rebound
for his second. Net result - PSV climb to within 4 points of Vitesse who
are back on earth. |

miss Van der Weerden |
01 Nov 2000
|
| The
PSV right back Chris van der Weerden will be out of action for a month
after tearing a ligament in his right knee during training. He will be
sorely missed as PSV have a heavy schedule of matches in the next few
weeks - against Vitesse, Twente, Anderlecht, Heerenveen and Feyenoord.. |
| PSV
celebrate 1 - 0 win in Kiev |
24 Oct 2000
|
| Before
the start of the tournament it looked as if Man United and Dynamo Kiev
were favourites to go through to the next stage. Now it's a different
story after Kiev's defeat at the hands of PSV and Man United's in
Anderlecht. The Ukrainian team desperately needed a win after their 4-2
defeat in Belgium but PSV were able to disrupt any attacking moves Dynamo
made. Johann Vogel and Mark van Bommel were instrumental in gaining
possession in midfield and are happily back to the form they showed last
season. The PSV forwards were not so hot - Kezman showing how dependent
his form is on the players around him and Adil Razi making little
impression - so it came as no surprise when a defender, Andre
Ooijer, headed in Van Bommel's corner just before halftime. Ooijer
had spent plenty of time on the reserve bench lately, trainer Gerets
preferring Kevin Hofland at right back, but tonight he was given the
chance to shine, as did the rest of PSV's defenders. In the second
half PSV had more trouble containing Kiev who had a goal dissallowed
(there had already been two more dissallowed in the first half because of
the offside rule). Still, they managed to hold off the Dynamo attacks
until the final whistle. The last match in Group G against Anderlecht will
be decisive for PSV with so much at stake for both teams and it is
to be hoped that Arnold Bruggink will be fit in time for the clash to give
that all important sting in attack.. |

Bruggink extends contract with PSV |
24 Oct 2000
|
| Arnold
Bruggink has agreed terms with his current club PSV to extend his
contract, which runs until the end of 2002, for another year with an
option on a further year after that. He says he's happy with the club and
not ready to try his luck abroad. He misses PSV's match against Kiev
tonight because of an injured foot but hopes to be fit to play against
Ajax on Sunday. |
| Man.
United too strong for PSV 3 - 1 |
18 Oct 2000
|
| PSV
entered the lion's den without fear but didn't have enough of the right
stuff to hand out the same punishment we saw in Eindhoven. Sir Alex
Ferguson had lit a fire under the match by making some nasty comments
about PSV to cover up his own arrogance in choosing to send an under
strength team to Holland 3 weeks ago. United
dominated the first half, at times overpowering the team from Eindhoven. Sheringham headed the first goal early in the 8th
minute from a Beckham corner.
Scholes missed by a whisker shortly after and Sheringham hit a ball over
the bar just before halftime. Manchester were tight in defence and
aggressive in man to man play - Bruggink became victim of one of these
confrontations and had to leave the pitch injured to be replaced by
Lucius. In the second half United were not playing in top gear and PSV
tried their best to create chances but were not allowed to penetrate their
opponent's defence. Indeed it was United who looked more threatening so it
came as a shock to them when Van Bommel's blistering shot hit the
back of the net in the 76th minute. This spurred Manchester on to up the
tempo which made for a really exciting last 15 minutes and with so much
honour at stake there were also a few yellow cards. Scholes (United's top
player and the best player of the match) got Manchester's 2nd goal in the
82nd while Sheringham's replacement Yorke delivered the killer punch with a 3rd
in the 86th minute showing United's class (they took over the No.1 position yet again in
the English Premier Division last Saturday, beating Leicester City 3 - 1
away). For a short while it had looked as if the Dutch side might be
able to go home with one point but the fleeting chance that PSV had to turn the match
a little their way after
Van Bommel's goal faded quickly and the match was soon over. Manchester
United now go top of the group and PSV face Anderlecht at home and Kiev away
to make sure they have the right stuff to go further in the competition. |
| PSV
go down 1 - 0 at Anderlecht |
19 Sep 2000
|
| PSV
missed out on the chance to build on the form they showed against Dynamo
Kiev by failing to convert any of the many chances they had to score
against Anderlecht. With their 5-1 defeat at the hands of Man United still
burning in the collective Anderlechtian memory the home side began
nervously but PSV failed to take advantage of this - they could have gone
ahead in the 5th minute and had an even better chance after 14 minutes but
Yuri Nikiforov's header was cleared from the line. This was the sign for
the Belgian team to show some action and they began a series of attacks
which helped to raise the entertainment level of the match. PSV responded
in kind and had, halfway through the first half, more and better
chances to score - but Kezman was not able to get the ball past
Anderlecht's goalie Filip de Wilde and the rebound to Bruggink also failed
to reach the back of the
net.
Anderlecht began the second half looking as
though they actually wanted those 3 points and increased the pressure on
PSV. The Belgian side got their best chance in the 54th minute when
Vanderhaeghe left 3 PSV players standing but his shot was too weak to
seriously threaten goalie Ronald Waterreus. Despite putting on Joonas
Kollka as substitute for Bouma in an attempt to get some sting in attack
PSV had to watch as, instead, Anderlecht got a lucky goal as the
result of a deflection from a free kick. This was sufficient to
secure victory for Anderlecht and a headache for PSV who squandered their
chances to win the match and have now lost the advantage they built up
through their win over Kiev last week.

| PSV
only get 2 in against Sparta 2-1 |
17 Sep 2000
|
| PSV
could only cash in two of the numerous chances they had to score in an
uninspiring match. Kezman scored within the first couple of minutes. The
second goal of the match took some time before it came but Bruggink
slotted in Chris van der Weerden's pass. The rest of the first half was
pretty uinspiring stuff with neither team being motivated to work hard. In
the second half Sparta were rewarded for their efforts after 6 minues with
a goal by Elkhattabi. This woke PSV from their afternoon snooze and the
rest of the game saw more effort by both teams but without result. |

PSV beat Dynamo Kiev 2 - 1 |
14 Sep 2000
|
| In
last night's Champions League duel PSV showed they have the 'right stuff'
to go far in the competition. Dynamo scored in the 7th minute as a result
of indecisiveness in the PSV defence. It took the home side until halfway
through the first half to get into gear but they then rose above
themselves and showed a level of efficiency and passion not normally
seen in their Division One games. The key player was Theo Lucius who
scored PSV's first goalin the 39th minute and set up the
second for Arnold Bruggink in the 50th minute. The game remained tense
until the fianl whistle but PSV nonetheless hung on to their lead
and can look forward to the meeting with Anderlecht who got smashed 5 - 1
at Manchester United. |
| PSV
show form |
9 Sept 2000 |
| PSV
are gradually coming into the form that is necessary for next weeks
Champions League confrontation with Dinamo Kiev. Playing away from home
against Fortuna, PSV demonstrated that their new attacking duo
Bruggink-Kezman are a force to be reckoned with. Arnold Bruggink,
who has had to play in the shadow of Ruud van Nistelrooy these past few
years, displayed last night how wrong it has been to leave him on the
reserve bench for so long. Bruggink is very creative and intelligent
player who can both score goals as well as putting other players into
scoring position. This was also the case in last nights
performance. Bruggink scored theng goal and had a part in PSV's
two other goals scored by Kezman and Claudio. |

- Willem II 2 - 2 |
5 Sept 2000
|
| PSV's
first home game of the season ended last night in a 2-2 draw. Playing
against their southern neighbors Willem II, PSV showed that they are
still not quite ready for next weeks Champions League meeting against
Dinamo Kiev. After taking the lead, a goal scored by Arnold Bruggink in
the extra time of the first half, PSV seemed to lose concentration. This allowed
Willem II to come back into the game seeing them score two second half
goals, the second a magnificent volley by Tom Caluwé. After Willem II's second goal PSV again took control of the
match resulting in the well deserved equalizer a few minutes before the
final whistle. |

get off to a bad start |
20Aug 2000
|
| PSV's
start to the season could not have been worse. Not only did they lose 2 -
0 to De Graafschap, both goals coming in the closing minutes,
they also saw their new Yugoslavian forward leave the pitch after being injured in the eight
minute of the game. Kezman, who cost PSV 12.5 million Euros, a record for the club,
may well be out of action for a number of weeks. |

Manchester still interested in Van Nistelrooy |
20 Aug
2000
|
| Manchester United
have asked PSV striker
Ruud van Nistelrooy if he would like to participate in the club's
training sessions in October. PSV, who lost theirng game of the
season by 2 - 0 to De Graafschap, were not at all pleased with United's
approach to the player. PSV's Director stated that if Manchester United were still
interested in Van Nistelrooy then they should approach the club
first. |

Win Uninspiring Duel |
14 Aug 2000
|
| PSV
won the Johan Cruijff Cup in the Amsterdam Arena yesterday beating
Roda JC in a match which didn't ignite. The stadium, filled to only a
third of its capacity, didn't have enough spectators or breathable
oxygen to help inspire the action on the pitch. PSV have already won the
trophy in 1996, 1997 and 1998, so last night's victory won't have
been exactly sweet. Even Johan Cruijff himself couldn't make it! However,
it was probably most notable for the performance of PSV's new signing
Mateja Kezman - he at least seemed to be motivated to give his all. |

trainer calls for smaller squad |
08 Aug 2000
|
| PSV's
trainer Erik Gerets has said that he believes a smaller squad could well
be a necessary measure if the club wish to retain the top position in
the Dutch Premier League. At this time the squad contains 28 players
(in reality 26 due to the long term absence of van Nistelrooy and Addo).
Even taking their absence into consideration Gerets still thinks the
squad is on the large side and that it was unfair to have talented young
players permanently on the reserve bench. |

Aug 2000

|
PSV's young team were handed out a 4 - 0 defeat by Belgium
club Brugge on Saturday. PSV' s trainer Erik Gerets could not remember the
team suffering such a disastrous defeat in a pre-season friendly . New
team captain Marc van Bommel (23) blamed the team's defeat on the absence
of Ruud van Nistelrooy (currently out of action due to injury) and the
sale of Luc Nillis. Trainer Gerets said after the match - "We still
have two weeks before the new season starts to get things in order".
