FRANK DE BOER

Born in 1970 and twin brother to Ronald he is another product of the Ajax youth system having been spotted at Zouaven football club in Hoorn. At Ajax he developed into an excellent defender reknowned for his clean passing and faultless ball handling. While at Ajax he helped them to win both the European Cup1 and the World Championships in 1995 and also the Super Cup in 1996. He had to miss the European Championships in England in 1996 due to an ankle injury. He was one of the best defenders during the World Championships held in France in 1998 (where Holland finished fourth). In 1999 he was transferred together with his brother to Barcelona. He has played 85 times for Holland. Back

RONALD DE BOER

Twin brother of Frank de Boer (born 1970) Ronald was spotted at Zouaven football club, based in Hoorn, by Amsterdam Ajax who signed him up, as well as his brother, for their youth scheme. After several seasons playing for Ajax he moved to FC Twente where, together with Youri Mulder, he formed a notorious attacking duo. In February 1993 he returned to Ajax where he played behind the forward line.Together with his brother Frank he left for Barcelona in January 1999. He helped Ajax win the Champions League (European Cup 1) and the World Championships in 1995 and the Super Cup in 1996. In 1996 he was voted best player in the Dutch league by his footballing colleagues. He has played 63 times as either forward or midfielder for Holland.

 WINSTON BOGARDE

Born in 1970. Played for Alexandria'66, SVV, Excelsior and Sparta before joining Ajax in 1994. From 1995, until his departure in 1997 he had a permanent place in the Ajax team. The former Ajax trainer Louis van Gaal used him in an attacking role because of his fast runs along the sideline. In 1997 he signed a four year contract with AC Milan which was not completed because in December 1997 he moved to Barcelona with a contract for three years. In August 2000 left Barcelona to play in the premiere league signing for Chelsea. He has had 20 appearances for Holland as left back. During the World Cup in 1998 he broke his right shin bone and tore some ankle ligaments. Winston Bogarde is a powerful and highly competitive player.

PHILLIP COCU

Born in 1970. Played for AZ from 1988 to 1990 and from 1990 to 1995 for Vitesse until his transfer to PSV Eindhoven where he developed into creative midfield player. In 1998 he signed a three year cotract with Barcelona. He made his debut for the Dutch national team in 1996 and has made a total of 50 appearances for his country. He is an extremely reliable and useful player who has the ability to play in a number of positions.

EDGAR DAVIDS

Born 1973. Began his footballing career at Schellingwoude and transferred to Ajax where he made his debut for the first team on September 8 1991. In 1996 he signed a contract for four years with AC Milan but moved to Juventus in 1997. Davids is a technically gifted player with incredible willpower and desire to win. During the European Championship in 1996 he lost his place in the team but has since regained it on the basis of his excellent play for Juventus, where he helped them to win the Italian league in 1998. During the World Championships held in France in 1998 he was regarded as one of the best midfielders. He has appeared 37 times as left half for Holland. Is currently resserve captain of the Dutch National Team.

LOUIS VAN GAAL

Born in 1951. Footballer and trainer. Played for RSKV De Meer, AFC Ajax, Antwerp FC, Telstar, Sparta and AZ. Began his career as assistant trainer at AZ and became youth trainer and assistant trainer for Ajax in 1991. He took Ajax to the top of European football, winning the European Cup 3 in 1992, the KNVB trophy, the Dutch league 3 times, the European Cup 1 in 1995, the World Championships and the Super Cup. Louis van Gaal has great tactical and psychological insight combined with his own "system" (for example he calls the outside left position as playing 'on the 11'). In 1997 he moved to Barcelona and under his guidance the club won the Spanish League in 1998 and 1999. Became Holland's trainer in the summer of 2000.

ED DE GOEY

Born 1966. He has kept goal 54 times for Holland and was thought to be the new regular goalkeeper for Holland ( after Hans van Breukelen ended his international career). Instead, he has had to compete for his place in the Dutch team with Edwin van der Saar, the Ajax goalkeeper. He played for Sparta for 5 seasons, where he replaced Bas van Noortwijk, and 7 seasons for Feyenoord, where he replaced Joop Hiele. In 1997 he moved to Chelsea , where Ruud Gullit was trainer/coach. He is well known for his fast reflexes.

PIERRE VAN HOOIDONK

Born 1969. He played for SC Welberg, VV Steenbergen, RBC, NAC, Celtic and Nottingham Forest. In 1999 he was transferred to Vitesse where he played for one season. Shortly after the European Championships he move to Benfica. A sharp shooting forward with a feared free-kick technique, he has played 17 times for Holland.

PATRICK KLUIVERT

Born 1976. He came up through the Ajax youth scheme and scored his first professional goal during his debut for Ajax against Rwanda in a benefit match in 1994. The following year he scored the only goal in Ajax's victory over AC Milan in the European Cup 1 final. In 1998 he moved to Barcelona where Louis van Gaal had become trainer the previous year. He is a strong, physical player with a 'nose for a goal' and has played 50 times for Holland. During the 2000 European Championships he ended joint top scorer.

RUUD VAN NISTELROOY

Born 1976. He has played for Geffen, Margriet, FC Den Bosch, SC Heerenveen and PSV, also appearing 10 times as forward for Holland. Well known for his goal scoring abilities and flexibility in terms of playing position. In the season 1998/99 he was top scorer in the Dutch league. Manchester United were very keen to sign van Nistelrooy but due to an injury the deal fell through.

ARTHUR NUMAN

Born 1969. Played for Haarlem, FC Twente and PSV ), moving to Glasgow Rangers in 1998. He is a powerful defender with 40 appearances for the Dutch team to his name.

MARC OVERMARS

Born 1973. Played for Go Ahead Eagles, Willem II, and AFC Ajax where he developed into the fastest winger in Holland. Due to a serious injury he was prevented from taking part in the European Championship in 1996. In 1997 he signed a 5 year contract with Arsenal who bought the rest of his contract with Ajax (running till 2000) for 7 million pounds. He can play on both wings and in those positions has played 62 times for Holland. In the summer of 2000 he moved to Barcelona.

MICHAEL REIZIGER

Born 1973. Played for Sint Martinus and AFC Ajax as right forward, spent a period on loan to Volendam and Groningen. After returing to Ajax he became a stylish right-half. In 1996 he left for AC Milan together with Edgar Davids and in 1997 moved to Barcelona. He has played 46 times for Holland as right back.

EDWIN VAN DER SAR

Born 1970. Plays for AFC Ajax where he was originally third choice as goalkeeper (in the shadow of Stanley Menzo and Dennis van der Poll). In the course of 1993 he worked his way up to becoming the regular first team goalie at Ajax and then was chosen for the Dutch team, succeeding Feyenoord's Ed de Goey. He has since appeared 55 times for Holland. In 1999 he signed a 4 year contract with the Italian club Juventus. He is an athletic and alert goalkeeper willing and able to come out and help his team defending.

CLARENCE SEEDORF

Born 1976. He played for AS '80 until his debut for the Ajax first team as 16 year-old, leaving to play for Sampdoria in 1995. In 1996 he signed a contract for 4 years with Real Madrid where he helped them to win the European Cup 1 (Champions League) in 1998. At the end of 1999 he went to Inter Milan. He is often the driving force in a team and does not know the word 'defeat' . He has played 54 times for Holland in midfield.

JAAP STAM

Born 1972. He palyed for DOS Kampen, FC Zwolle, SC Cambuur Leeuwarden and Willem II going to play for PSV in 1996. In 1998 Manchester United bought him for 10.7 million pounds from PSV which made him the most expensive defender in the world. In 1999 he was a regular player in the team which won the Champions League. He is a strong midfield defender who is very good with his head and can be seen right up front when a his team gets a corner. He has played 36 times for Holland as centre half.

BOUDEWIJN ZENDEN

Born 1976. Played for the amateur club Leonidas before going to PSV where he developed into a fast and creative midfielder. At the end of the 1997/8 season he left PSV for Barcelona. He has played 26 times for Holland.
