| The
former Vitesse supremo Karel Aalbers has been arrested and is being
questioned by Dutch tax fraud investigators FIOD. He is suspected of tax
fraud, giving false written declarations and embezzlement. There were
raids on adresses in Holland (Nikos Machlas received a knock-on-the-door), and abroad, in the search for evidence and
Sport Promotion, the organisation looking after several of the players
whose transfers look to have have been part of Aalbers 'criminal'
activities, have also been paid a visit. The transfers of Ferdi Vierklau and
Roy Makaay to Tenerife in 1997, of Niklos Machlas from OFI Crete to
Vitesse in 1996 and Vitesse to Ajax in 1999, and Pierre van Hooijdonk's
from Nottingham Forest to Vitesse in 1999 and from Vitesse to Benfica in
2000 are all 'suspect'. The investigation is being run by the Dutch Public
Prosecutor's office so prosecutions look highly likely. |
