| Holland
and Ireland 2 - 2 |
02 Sep 2000
|
| After
trailing 0 -1 in the first half and seeing a second goal scored against
them in the second half Holland fought back to get a draw out of their World Cup qualifier
against Ireland. The Irish
played with far more motivation and aggression, showing their famed
fighting spirit and being allowed too much possession of the ball by the
Dutch during long periods of the game. However, the Dutch showed that even
0-2 down in the second half they had enough quality and grit to fight
back with a goal by substitute Talan and in the last spell of the match the
equaliser from Bronckhorst. Louis van Gaal's intense efforts from the
sideline to keep motivating his team ( in an untried and unfamiliar
lineup) bore fruit and confirmed the status and reputation of Holland's
new trainer. In the light of the long list of absent and injured players
it was definitely no mean achievement to end up with a draw against a team whose desire to win
and do their best for their country should never be
underestimated. |
