New Dutch coach gives youth a chance

11 Aug 2000

Holland's new manager/coach Louis van Gaal has wasted no time in revealing his intentions by announcing the selection of five young and talented new faces for the friendly against AGOVV next week. The former Ajax and Barcelona coach has included Wilfred Bouma, Arnold Bruggink and Marc van Bommel from PSV, along with Twente's up and coming star Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink as well as the former AZ and recent transfer to Glasgow Rangers Fernando Ricksen in the new squad. Van Gaal said this afternoon that even more young players will be given a chance to show their worth in the near future, but that a balance of youth and experience was still essential. Ruud Krol, until the Euro 2000 championship the most capped Dutch player, was also named as new assistant-coach, replacing Johan Neeskens (who recently became the new trainer at Utrecht FC).

The Squad

Van der Saar, Westerveld, Reiziger, Ricksen, Stam, Konterman, Frank de Boer, Numan, Van Bronckhorst, Seedorf, Van Bommel, Davids, Bosvelt, Cocu, Bruggink, Ronald de Boer, Overmars, Vennegoor van Hesselink, Zenden, Kluivert and Bouma.
