| NEC win
friendly |
11 July 2001
|
| The
pre-season friendlies are in full swing and all Premier Division sides won
their matches:NEC beat NEC
amateurs 1 - 4 with goals by Hristov
(2), Jansen and Wisgerhof.

| NEC
sign Feyenoord's Jarda Simr |
16 June 2001
|
| NEC
have signed Feyenoord's Jarda Simr on a contract for 4 years. The 22
year-old attacking midfielder has been on loan to satellite club Excelsior
last season where he made a good impression (scoring 18 goals in total). |
| Stefan
Jansen signs for NEC |
16 May 2001
|
| TOP
Oss' Toto top scorer Stefan Jansen has finally made up his mind and made a
verbal agreement to sign with NEC. Last week he was still
trying to decide between RKC and the Nijmegen club and I thought he'd
sign for the Waalwijkers who'd just agreed to forge an alliance with the
Toto side. I was wrong!! The 28 year-old will shortly sign a deal
with his new employer for 2 years. |
| NEC
lose to NAC 0 - 2 |
13 May 2001
|
| NEC
and NAC are in mid-table (respectively 11th and 10th) and have little to
fight for now the season's almost over - self-respect is the name of the
game. In a yo-yo of a first half with chances on both sides Bryan Roy put the visitors ahead in the 44th minute.
NEC began the 2nd half in more determined fashion but NAC regained the
initiative and Glen
Salmon added a 2nd in the 73rd to put them level on points with Heerenveen
in 9th (who stay ahead on goal average). |
| NEC
squad refuse to hand in strip |
11 May 2001
|
| The
NEC squad have been in conflict with the club since the beginning of the
season over the payment of bonusses and, as a sign of protest, have
refused to hand in their shirts (and maybe also the shorts) which were to
get some lovely new sponsor names on them. The dispute concerns primarily
the payment of bonusses for FA Cup (Amstel Cup) matches and also that the
paymentsshould continue when a player is unfit to play. |
| Jack
de Gier signs for Dunfermline |
10 May 2001
|
| As
we reported earlier it looks as though NEC's
Jack de Gier is off to bonny Scotland to play for Dunfermline Athletic.
The 32 year-old striker, who previously turned out for BVV Den Bosch,
Cambuur, Go Ahead Eagles, Willem II and Lierse SK has still to finalise
his personal terms with his new club but, in principle, there is a contract
till the summer of 2002 waiting to be signed. |
| De
Graafschap beat NEC 2 - 1 |
06 May 2001
|
| De
Graafschap are in 15th position and could do with a win if they are to
close the gap on AZ and Groningen (respectively 14th on 31 points
from 31 matches and 13th with 32 from 30). NEC have 40 points, right behind NAC in
10th on 41. Patrick Ax put the visitors in the lead in the 16th minute and
they hung onto that slim advantage until late in the 2nd half looking by
far the better side. The home team looked numbed and resigned to defeat,
showing absolutely no signs of a revival until deep into the 2nd half when René
Bot drew the Doetinchemers level in the 73rd and Marino Promes took them
into the lead 3 minutes later. They will be happy with the points which
lift them 5 points clear of Fortuna (who play Feyenoord later on today),
avoiding the end-of-season playoffs, while NEC stay where they were. |
| NEC
want TOP Oss' Stefan Jansen |
05 May 2001
|
| NEC
wants to move matches to Saturday |
02 May 2001
|
| NEC
have told the Dutch FA (KNVB) that, at the request of their fans, they
want to play their matches on Saturday instead of Sunday. Only the matches
which could involve crowd problems and necessitate extra policing (the
so-called "risico-wedstrijden" or "risk matches") would be played on Sunday. |
| Jack
de Gier moves to Dunfermline? |
01 May 2001
|
| NEC
and Scottish side Dunfermline Athletic are negotiating the transfer of
striker Jack de Gier (who still has a year left on his contract in
Nijmegen). The move would see him reunited with coach Jimmy Calderwood,
who originally brought him to NEC, on a contract for 2 years. |
| NEC
want work permit for Kazlauskas |
27 Apr 2001
|
| NEC
are applying for a work permit for their young American defender Charles
Kaslauskas. The 18 year-old A-1 junior has already agreed terms with
the club and later this year he also expects to be travelling with the
American Under 21s to the World Cup in Argentina. |
| Feyenoord
win against NEC 3 - 0 |
21 Apr 2001
|
| The
Rotterdammers really needed a good win to break the run of disappointing
performances they've had of late, especially now that Ajax, Roda and RKC
are all creeping steadily closer. NEC are sitting in 11th place and have
also lost their shine since their early-part-of-the-season
successes. Jon Dahl Tomasson was in the mood and his goals in the
11th and 18th minutes were just what the doctor ordered. Ebi Smolarek
added a 3rd in the 83rd - the 3 points will
keep them clear of Ajax in 3rd place (whose match against Vitesse was
postponed). Feyenoord seem to have regained some confidence but have
still got a couple of tough matches to play (Ajax and Roda) and NEC's
trainer Johan Nesskens was more than a little disappointed that his team
put on such a poor show. |
| Fortuna
go to 15th after 2 - 0 against NEC |
14 Apr 2001
|
| Fortuna's
luck seems finally to have changed as they claw their way out of the
danger zone with their 2nd win in a row, an encouraging 2 - 0 against NEC.
Nenad
Bjekovicd the score for the Sittardians in the 32nd minute and
Englishman Ronald
Hamming secured the win with a 90 minute goal. Relegation starts to look
less of a certainty now that they are 15th, one place above De Graafschap
(who have a game in hand), and don't have to face any of their competitors
at the bottom before the season ends. |
| Heerenveen
give NEC a 5 - 0 beating |
07 Apr 2001
|
| NEC
looked decidedly stronger than the home team in the 1st half but the
Frieslanders were better at converting the chances they created - Anthony
Lurling put the Frieslanders on the scoreboard from the spot on the
halfhour and Mike Nurmela made it 2 - 0 in the 44th. The 2nd half saw a
more confident Heerenveen turn on the heat - four minutes after the
restart Daniël Jenssen took them to a very comfortable 3 - 0 lead and
Sander van Gessel increased that to 4 - 0 in the 58th. Ignacio Tuhuteru
added a 5th 3 minutes before time. They showed off some sharp moves
and finishing tonight which they'll need even more when they play host to
PSV on Wednesday in the Amstel Cup semi-final. |
| NEC
beat Ajax 1 - 0 |
01 Apr 2001
|
| Ajax
were having an off night, and mostly unable to penetrate the Nijmegen
defence, though they had a few 1st halfngs and more than enough
possession (though that's not enough in itself - it's what you do with the
ball when you've got it that counts - see David Icke's article on the lost
art of dribbling at http://www.football365.com/content/features/icke/fw_ike_519606.htm),
and the physically stronger NEC side were able to contain the
Amsterdammers' forwards while being capable of dangerous counters. A goal
by top scorer Gorgi Hristov in the 58th minute gave NEC victory - a
beautiful solo move straight through the Ajax defence, sliding the ball
past Fred Grim. He'd worked hard and missed narrowly a couple of times
before getting his reward. |
| NEC
beat Groningen 1 - 0 |
18 Mar 2001
|
| NEC
will be glad they've got Wisgerhof on loan from Vitesse - he scored the
only goal of the afternoon in the 7th minute - plus the fact that this was
their first win in 9 games, leaving them in 9th place while the
northerners are 13th. They were marginally the better of the two sides in
a match which failed to ignite, Groningen lacking the punch up front to
convert rare chances into goals. |
| Wisgerhof
stays with NEC |
17 Mar 2001
|
| Vitesse's
Peter Wisgerhof is to remain on loan at NEC next season. Both clubs have
agreed to terms and will talk to the 21 year-old defender about his future
next week. It looks as though he is willing to spend another season at NEC
and then wants to make the move back to Vitesse. |
| Twente
and NEC draw 1 - 1 |
10 Mar 2001
|
| NEC
are now 9 games without a win and have lost the momentum of their strong
start to the season. Tonight's was their 13th draw of the season - the
last time they got 3 points was coincidentally against today's
opponents in Nijmegen (of course!). Chris
de Witted the score for the home side in the 27th minute. Peter
Wisgerhof equalized in the 61st, showing why NEC are so keen to sign him -
he's on loan from Vitesse. |
| NEC
in tight draw with AZ 1 - 1 |
04 Mar 2001
|
| Dries
Boussata put the visitors ahead just before halftime (43rd minute) and
Robin Nelisse could have made it two but missed from the spot (also in
the 43rd). NEC have now gone 9 games without a win but came back through a goal by Danny Hesp in the
51st and from then on went for the full 3 points. Martin Ax got his marching orders in the
82nd which effectively signalled the end of their campaign. |
| NEC
want to sign Vitesse's Wisgerhof |
22 Feb 2001
|
| NEC
want to extend their loan of Vitesse's defender Peter Wisgerhof for
another season, with an option to buy. The club had already expressed
interest in a transfer but were put off by Vitesse's asking price. Perhaps
now that it's clear the Arnhemmers are in a financial crisis there may be
a room for some bargaining. |
| Utrecht
let
NEC off the hook 1 - 1 |
11 Feb 2001
|
| NEC
seemed to have come for a draw while Utrecht wanted more to show for their
efforts. It took an hour before Alphons Groenendijk's freekick gave Igor
Gluscevic the chance to head them into the lead in the 60th. The home team
had two great chances to claim all 3 points but missed out leaving Gjorgi Hristov
to get the
equalizer in the 77th minute. |
| NEC's
Van der Sleen extends contract |
06 Feb 2001
|
| NEC's
reserve goalie, 37 year-old Albert van der Sleen, has extended his
contract with the club until 2002. He'd put in a great performance at the
weekend against Vitesse, as if to prove his worth to the club where he's
2nd choice after Dennis Gentenaar. Previously he played 16 seasons and 379
matches for Eindhoven. |
| Neeskens
could quit over transfer changes |
05 Feb 2001
|
| NEC
trainer and former Dutch international Johan Neeskens has said that any
changes to the transfer system, which would make it easier than it already
is for players to change club, could force him to quit the game. He has
seen for himself how similar circumstances, in the now defunct North
American Soccer League, would make it impossible for clubs to develop any
form of youth training or for teams to develop consistency. Every year
there would be new faces and fans would find it impossible to identify
with constantly changing names/players in 'their' team. Such a situation
could make him decide to call it a day, he said. |
| Vitesse
fight for draw against NEC 2 - 2 |
04 Feb 2001
|
| Things
are not what they were in the Gelredome - the 2nd home defeat of the last
week threatened for a while - could this be a signal that the power struggle between the club,
sponsor NUON and ex-supremo Karel Aalbers are finally taking their toll in
terms of the psychological condition of the team and trainer?? Thank
goodness they've just brought in fresh Belgian blood Gert Claessens who's
proved to be an excellent addition to the squad. Bob Peeters put Vitesse ahead in
the 11th minute but Gjorgi Hristov had a swift reply in the 12th. The
Gelderland derby had NEC rather overenthousiastic - leading to a red card
sending off for Piet collens in the 25th minute. NEC more than held their own,
despite the loss of a pair of defensive feet, held on tenaciously until Jack de
Gier even gave them hope of an away win in the 75th 1-2. But there he was again,
Mr. Claessens with an equalizer in the 85th minute, and not a moment too
soon. They stay 3rd on 38 points from 20 games, Ajax breathing in their neck on
36 with a game in hand. Check out David Icke's article on the influence of mental training in modern
sport, and the lack thereof in football: http://www.football365.com/content/features/icke/fw_ike_478731.htm

| NEC
sign Peters from TOP Oss |
02 Feb 2001
|
| TOP
Oss's 24 year-old midfielder Marc Peters (son of ex-international Jan
Peters) has signed a contract for 3 years with NEC. He starts on July 1st
at his new club. |
| NEC
lose to RBC Roosendaal 2 - 3 |
31 Jan 2001
|
| It
must be an evening for missed penalties, Theo Janssen missed one for
Vitesse and now Henk Vos misses one in the 26th minute for RBC. Thank
goodness Reggie Blinker has come on board - he scored in the 45th to take
RBC into the dressing rooms with an advantage. The NEC defence seemed to
be having a day off, maybe the Cup defeat by Feyenoord had left some
mental scars? After the break Henk Vos
made up for his earlier mistake with a goal in the 55th and Gjorgi Hristov
got one back for NEC in the 62nd. Peter Wisgerhof made it 2-2 in the 70th
and it looked at one point as if Hristov had scored the winner only to
have it dissallowed - the provider of the ball Pieter Collen was offside.
After that NEC fell apart and Marcel Cas shot in the winner for RBC after
a long rush in the 88th. |
| Marcel
Koning extends NEC stay |
30 Jan 2001
|
| Marcel
Koning has extended his contract with NEC for one more year. The 26
year-old midfielder originally joined the club in 1995/96 from ADO Den
Haag. |
| Tumba
makes a move |
30 Jan 2001
|
| Zico
Tumba is to leave De Graafschap for NEC at the end of this season. The 23
year-old striker from the Congo is going on a free transfer and has signed
up for 3 years. |
| Feyenoord in quarter finals after 2-1 over NEC |
26 Jan 2001
|
| The
Rotterdammers have a lot to thank goalie Jurek Dudek for after their lucky
win against NEC. The home side played the better football during most of
the match but were denied the rewards for their efforts by Dudek and the
woodwork. Theyd the score in the 5th minute through Dennis Schulp
but Bonaventura Kalou equalized 3 minutes later. Hristov missed a penalty
in the 15th for NEC with a poorly taken spot-shot that gave Dudek no
problems. Feyenoord were unable to capitalise on the chances that came
their way and their ever so slight superiority in the remainder of the 1st
half. Even though NEC had control of the 2nd half they were unable to get
the ball past Feyenoord's keeper and even the crossbar got in the way
twice. Kalou got the match winner in the 80th minute to end NEC's hopes of
a quarter final place and Feyenoord are lucky to find themselves facing
the winner of tonight's Heerenveen - VVV match. |
| Neeskens
ready for Barcelona call |
23 Jan 2001
|
| NEC's
trainer/coach Johan Neeskens says he's ready to go to Barcelona if they
want him. For the former Ajax and Barca player, who has taken NEC to 7th
place in the Ere Divisie in Holland, it would be a dream come true -
"they are the best club in the world, I'd love to return for the best
time of my life". |
| Danny
Hesp signs for two more years with NEC |
19 Jan 2001
|
| NEC's
captain, and former Ajax defender, Danny Hesp has signed up with the club
for another two years. He made his first team debut in Amsterdam in 1987
but only played 9 games before a serious leg fracture put him out of
action. He never got the chance to play again for Ajax after that and
arrived at NEC after spells with Heerenveen, Top Oss, Roda and AZ . |
| Willem
II win 2 - 0 against NEC |
21 Dec 2000
|
| This
evening's victory pushes Willem II into 6th place, thanks to goals from
Mariano Bombarda in the 38th and Dmitri Shoukov in the 59th minute. They
seem to be on the up after 2 away wins against Heerenveen and Roda, and
the home win against Fortuna. NEC, on the other hand, are on the slippery
slope after making a promising start to their season. |
| AZ
and NEC in entertaining goalless draw |
10 Dec 2000
|
| AZ
set the tone in this match and had plenty of chances to score but were
lacking in the finishing department. They looked impressive with accurate
passing and high tempo one-two's, NEC couldn't match them but still had
their threatening monments. Jamal
Dibi could have injected the match with a shot of goal scoring energy
after only 20 seconds, when Nelisse's pass set him up but NEC's Gentenaar
was waiting in the goalmouth to collect his header. NEC's best chance of
the match came in the 20th minute from an unsuccessful freekick, the ball
pinballing in front of goal, landing at Pieter Collen's feet but he was
unable to get it past Henk Timmer.Ten minutes before halftime Dibi got a
2nd chance for the home team but his shot flew over the bar. AZ dominated
the rest of the game but Nelisse and Van Galen, in particular, weren't
sharp enough tonight to get goals. To make things worse John Bosman,
having the best chance to score in the 80th minute, had his 'goal'
dissallowed. |
| De Gier's elbow jab earns him 4 game ban |
06 Dec 2000
|
| The
elbow jab Jack de Gier handed out to Tieme Klompe in the match against
Heerenveen on Nov. 26th has earned him a 4 match suspension. He has until
this Thursday to appeal. |
| Janssen in 350th gets winner against Twente 1 - 0 |
03 Dec 2000
|
| In
his 350th professional appearance Anton Janssen scored NEC's winner
against FC Twente for their first premier division home win against the
visitors since 1981. Janssen made his debut for the club against Ajax on
25th September 1982 when NEC lost 5 - 0. Despite missing De Gier, Hristov
and Koning (all with match suspensions) as well as goalie Gentenaar and
Patrick Ax through injury NEC delivered another competent performance.
Janssen will be grateful to the absent for the chance to put a cherry on
his celebration cake. They played better than their guests, after a
hesitant start, and 'dominated' for most of the match. Only at the end,
after 3 changes had been made by Twente trainer Fred Rutten
(Chris de Witte, Tommie van der Leegte and Kevin van de Paar) did they
really exert any pressure on NEC but, apart from a post tester by Jan
Vennegoor of Hesselink, nothing came close. The home team's Pieter Collen
threatened to score 2 closing counters but the scorenoard was reserved for
"good old" Anton. NEC
are now 5th and breathing down 4th place Ajax's neck, only 4 points behind
and with a game in hand. |
| Willem
II's Dennis Schulp on loan to NEC |
01 Dec 2000
|
| The
22 year-old striker Dennis Schulp is on loan to NEC for the rest of the
season and will possibly make his debut in this Sunday's game against FC
Twente. He has played for Ajax and Volendam and his contract with Willem
II runs until 2002. |
| Investigation
into Jack de Gier's 'elbow' |
28 Nov 2000
|
| The
incident in last Saturday's match between NEC's striker Jack de Gier and
Heerenveen's defender Tieme Klompe - De Gier allegedly elbowing or
punching his 'opponent' - will be investigated by the Dutch FA. |
| First defeat of season 1 - 3 against Feyenoord |
20 Nov 2000
|
| NEC's
first defeat in 12 matches ended a week of centenary celebrations for the
club on a bum note. Feyenoord were simply too good for them and had the
match under control for most of the 90 minutes. Wisgerhof gave the
visitors a headstart with an own goal in the 24th minute. The 1st half saw
more defensive action than attacks until 21 year-old Australian Emerton
(bought from Sydney Olympic last Summer) curled a ball around NEC's keeper
Gentenaar in the 44th minute. He was Feyenoord's man of the match,
inspiring the team and scoring a 2nd goal at the end of an hour's play. He
picked up the ball on the halfway line, sliced through the NEC defence and
slammed it away to make it 0-3. NEC looked disillusioned until Peter
Wisgerhof made up for his 1st half mistake by getting a birthday goal for
himself in the 64th. This gave them some hope but Feyenoord's defence
remained rock solid for the rest of the match. |
| NEC
through in FA Cup 3 - 1 against Sparta |
17 Nov 2000
|
| After
last Sunday's 2-0 defeat at the hands of NEC Sparta may have been hoping
for revenge. It was not to be - within 10 minutes they were already 2
goals down - Mike Zonneveld and Patrick Ax the scorers. Sparta's only
saving grace was Ali Elkhattabi who impressed throughout the match with
his ball skills and manoeuverability. It was his constant ability to find
space which led to Sparta's only goal. He can turn on a Euro and did so,
firing a shot which hit the post and rebounded to be smartly put away by
Langerak. The game was pretty uninspiring apart from these displays of
talent and took place in a rather empty stadium. It seems that a cup match
doesn't generate the excitement it used to. Hristov scored a 3rd in the
dying minutes of the game to seal Sparta's cup fate - they can now
concentrate on the league. |
| Sparta
lose to NEC 0 - 2 |
12 Nov 2000
|
| NEC
remain the only unbeaten team in the Premier Division this season after
Feyenoord's defeat by Vitesse. This was only the 3rd time in 24 meetings
that NEC had managed an away win at "The Castle" (Het Kasteel),
the others being in 1968 (0-3) and 1989(0-2). Under trainer Johan Neeskens
they are enjoying a new lease of life and are sitting comfortably in 4th
place. Former international Bart
Latuherud the score in the 27th minute, continuing his good form of
the last few weeks. He was the engine in midfield feeding ball after ball
to Hristov and George de Gier up front. The match was also a meeting
between the division's top scorers Gorgi Hristov and Ali Elkhattabi.
Hristov scored in the 60th
to take his total to 11 this season and draw level with Elkhattabi who had
more scoring chances but didn't get one in. Sparta remain too dependent on
the Moroccan's goal scoring talents which is why they are still too close
to the relegation zone for comfort. |
| NAC
and NEC draw 2 - 2 |
05 Nov 2000
|
| This
was a match between equals, both teams playing an attractive game of
football. NAC are one of the surprises of the season, newly promoted and
sitting comfortably in 6th place in the table. Henk ten Cate's team have
16 points from 9 games, including victories over De Graafschap and
Groningen. Johan Neesken's NEC are doing even better with 18 points from
10 games and 4th place. They are more than happy with their top scoring
Macedonian Gorgi Hristov, newly signed from Burnley FC. In their first
home match since the 24th of September the home side were put under
immediate pressure by the visitors. De Gier had a good chance but hit the
bar and Dennis Gentenaar had a couple of opportunities for NAC. In the
12th minute De Gier couldn't miss scoring from Hristov's pass but minutes
later NAC's Alfred Schreuder saw Stewart make a run and served him up with
a pass which the American slammmed into the roof of the net to make it
1-1. NAC then piled on the pressure and Christiano and Simons had good
chances to score. Just before half time NEC's goalie Hesp made a bad
clearance which Christiano pounced on to put NAC in front. In the 2nd half
the home side tried to hold onto their lead and did so, despite the
visitors' attacks, almost going 3-1 up but Stewart's shot went just over
the bar. Mark Schenning was brought on to replace Christiano in an attempt
to strengthen the NAC defence while still looking for that 3rd goal. It
was, instead, NEC who got an equalizer when Scultz came on to replace Rene
van Rijswijk and immediately scored in the 83rd. It was a goal NEC
well deserved being the better side in the 2nd half, NAC the
stronger team in the 1st. |
| NEC
win Gelderland duel 2 - 1 |
02 Nov 2000
|
| NEC
were too strong for De Graafschap in this duel between teams from the
Dutch province of Gelderland. For NEC the result means they remain
undefeated in the last 10 games - the first time this happened was in the
1974/75 season. They have the chance to break that record in Breda this
weekend when they play NAC. Apart from a messy first half hour they were
clearly the better team and Ax, Van Rijswijk and Koning had their chances
to score in the 1st half. De Graafschap had little to show for their
efforts apart from some nice passing of the ball. Their coach McDonald
made four changes compared with last Saturday's defeat by Heerenveen so
that Bot, Tchangai, Viscall and Tumba were all there at the start. NEC's
first goal came in the 55th minute when Ax scored after a blunder by
Tchangai. De Graafschap chose to go on the attack which gave the home team
more room to play and 10 minutes later the result was the second goal, and
10th this season, for Hristov. In the 88th minute Meerdink got one back
for the visitors. |
| NEC
continue surprise 3 - 0 against Willem II |
29 Oct 2000
|
| The
club from Nijmegen have now gone 9 games without a defeat and can stretch
that to 10 on Wednesday with a win over De Graafschap. They were too
strong for an opponent missing Van Nieuwstadt and Victoria in defence.
Their replacements for the day, Hill and Jaliens, failed miserably and
won't be looking forward to their coming assessment. Willem II's trainer
Westerhof hates a defensive approach to football, unlike his opposite
Neeskens who sees it as essential if you're going to get those points, but
will have been furious at the errors made here. NEC are also blessed with
Hristov up front who, after Collen had started the score in the 45th
minute, put way 2 goals in the 68th and 83rd, to take his season's tally
to 9. He's often alone up front with Jack de Gier because of his trainer's
caution in defence (keeping as many men as possible behind the ball) but
together they are a dangerous duo. Willem II have no such luck(?) at the
moment, with problems in all departments. |
| NEC
move to top of the Premier League |
24 Aug 2000
|
| NEC
are now top of the Premier League after drawing 4 - 4 against Premier League
newcomers Groningen yesterday. The crowd was treated to a spectacular
game, with both a first minute goal and a goal in the final minute of
the game. Groningen's new forward Dejan Curovicd the score
and looked as if they were going to win the game until
NEC's Pieter Collen destroyed their hopes in the dying seconds by
scoring the equalizer and lifting his side to the top of the Premier League. |
