| Dennis
de Nooijer on trial with Strasbourg |
11 July 2001
|
| Heerenveen's
Dennis de Nooijer is on trial till the end of this week with French side
RC Strasbourg. The 32 year-old striker has a contract till 2002 but has
been given permission by the Frieslanders to leave the club. He's trained
once with the French team (coached by former Czech international Ivan Hašek)
and says that they equal to the Dutch sub-top. |

08 July 2001
|

Metalurgs Liepaja 6 - 1 at home after
losing 3 - 2 in Latvia. The mighty Swede Marcus Allbäck got a
hattrick - Daniel Jensen, Jeffrey Talan and Anthonie Lurling getting
the other goals - they now have two teams to beat in order to reach the
final round, starting with FC Basel. The 3 winners of the last knockout round get a place in the
UEFA Cup next season. |
| Heerenveen
lose 1st Intertoto match |
02 July 2001
|
| Heerenveen
have lost their first match of the Intertoto tournament against Liepajas
Metalurgs in Latvia 3 - 2. The Dutch side took the lead twice during the
match with goals by Romano Denneboom and Anthonie Lurling but the Latvians
proved the superior team. The Frieslanders get a chance to prove otherwise
in their Abe Lenstra stadium next weekend. |

| First

24 June 2001
|
| Heerenveen's
first opponent in the Intertoto tournament will be Metalurgs Liepaja
from Letland on either Saturday June 30th or Sunday July 1st. The
Frieslanders travel away for theng match and expect to play the
return on July 7th. |
| Heerenveen
sign Allan Bak Jensen |
23 June 2001
|
| Heerenveen
have signed Allan Bak Jensen from Danish side FC Midtjylland on a contract
for 4 years. The 23 year-old right half was on trial with the Frieslanders
during their winter camp last January but had to leave Spain early with a
knee injury. He becomes the club's 5th Scandinavian player - Daniël
Jensen, Marcus Allbäck, Jesper Hakansson and Thomas Holm being the others
- and his new club are also apparently looking at another Danish player,
Peter Gravesen. |
| Ignacio
Tuhuteru signs for Groningen |
13 June 2001
|
| The
negotiations are over and striker Ignacio Tuhuteru has signed a
contract with Groningen for 3 years after moving from FC Zwolle to
Heerenveen at the beginning of the season. His new club have bought out
the 27 year-old's contract (he'd signed up for two years) for an
undisclosed sum. |
| Tuhuteru
to sign for Groningen? |
09 June 2001
|
| Heerenveen's
Ignacio Tuhuteru is close to moving to Groningen after the two clubs
agreed to the transfer. The 27 year-old former Ajax, RBC and Zwolle
striker joined Heerenveen in 2000 but has failed to secure a regular place
in the 1st team, making only 15 appearances last season. He's still to
agree personal terms with his new club but they expect that he will
replace Peter Hoekstra (on loan last season from Ajax and probably off to
Portugese side Vitória Guimarães). |
| Houttuinen
on loan to Veendam |
23 May 2001
|
| Heerenveen
and Veendam have recently entered into cooperation with each other and the
Frieslanders are lending 22 year-old midfielder Max Houtuin to the Toto
club. He's only made 52 appearances in the last five years with the Ere
Divisie club (including 4 this season). |
| Iwan
Tzetkov attracts interest |
22 May 2001
|
| Heerenveen's
Iwan Tztkov, currently on loan to Toto side Veendam, has attracted the
interest of several clubs. Veendam would like to keep him but MVV, Emmen,
NAC, and Fortuna are all showing an interest> The Russian striker's
contract with Heerenveen runs out next year and he will first be
talking to them before entering into discussions with any other
clubs. |
| Heerenveen
and Vitesse in goalless draw |
12 May 2001
|
| Heerenveen
are 9th, a point behind Willem II and 2 ahead of NAC - they would love to
claim the best ranking for the summer's Intertoto tournament which could
get them back into Europe next season after this season's appetizer. Vitesse
have suffered from the well documented 'Aalbers affair' and have lost a
lot of steam since Christmas. The match ended goalless,
Heerenveen stay where they are and Vitesse give up their spot to RKC (who
won at De Graafschap). and are now in 6th place. |
| PSV
party after 3 - 0 against Heerenveen |
06 May 2001
|
| A
draw will be enough for PSV tothe champagne (which has been on ice since
last weekend's missed opportunity to seal the Championship) and start the
celebrations planned for this afternoon. Heerenveen would love to come
away with a win and boost their ranking in a bid to qualify for the
Intertoto tournament this summer (with it's prize of European football
next season). A win would take them past Willem II into 8th place on 47,
closing the gap with RKC to 3 points. Van Nistelrooy started on the bench,
giving Arnold Bruggink a chance to team up with Kezman again. Eric Gerets
wanted to reward the players who'd been in the team for most of the sesaon
with the chance to play in the deciding match of the title race. Bruggink
paid back the trust with a goal in the 33rd, pouncing on a defensive
blunder, and making it look easy. The match was not of a high level but that will not worry
the Champions as they win their 16th Championship title - they will be
glad that the scoreboard looked festive enough after Van Bommel scored in the 65th and Kezman in the
69th minute to make it 3 - 0 . It was yet another example of PSV's superiority this season
and a fitting way for the team to clinch the
inevitable title and kickstart the party which will undoubtedly continue till deep
in the night.

| MVV
take on board 3 Heerenveen players |
03 May 2001
|
| After
telling 10 players that they are no longer wanted
in Maatricht MVV have
ambitious plans to inject their squad with new blood. They have offered a
contract for 2 years to Heerenveen's 20 year-old defender Harvey
Wijngaarde as well as hiring the Frieslanders' Nigerian Godfrey Nwankpa as
well as the Belgian Ian Claes for 2 years. |
| Utrecht
beat Heerenveen 1 - 2 |
02 May 2001
|
| Utrecht
have put an end to any faint hope Heerenveen may have had of repeating
this season's European adventure with an away win in Friesland. In a match
where there was little to choose between the teams Igor Gluscevicd
the score for the visitors in the 14th minute, heaaaading in Tom van Mol's
cross. Utrecht had the better of the 1st half play but neglected to
increase their score, allowing the home team to come back through a goal
by Mike Nurmela in the 23rd. A defensive error by Johan Hansma gave
Belgian striker Stefaan Tanghe the opportunity to put his side ahead in
the 49th minute. His 2nd important match-winning goal in recent weeks (he
got the match winner against Willem II) proving once again that, although
he'd got off to a slow start since moving to Friesland, his transfer was
money well spent. Utrecht leapfrog Vitesse into 5th place and look
increasingly likely to make it into Europe next season. Foppe de Haan
was celebrating his 400th match as Heerenveen's trainer and the result
will surely have soured the champagne. |
| Sparta
go down to
Heerenveen's storming Swede 1 - 3 |
28 Apr 2001
|
| Sparta
are stuck in 17th place, only one point behind Fortuna, and really need a
win if they are to get clear of the danger zone or else there'll be Toto
Division football for them next season! Heerenveen are considerably more
comfortable in 8th place but would be more than happy to take the points
and add them to their collection. They've not lost since the winter break
and are jostling with Vitesse, Roda, Utrecht and RKC for a
European-football-earning position via an end-of-the-season spurt. Theng play was mediocre with too many free balls being given away on
both sides..... Marcus Allbäckd the score in the 38th but that man Ali Elkhattabi equalized with a spot-shot in the
41st only to see team-Humphrey Rudge give away an own goal 2 minutes
later. Although the Rotterdammers played with a lot of determination
after the break but weren't sharp enough up-front. Their hearts sunk when
the storming Swede Allbäck put away his 2nd of the evening in
the 63rd to seal victory for the Frieslanders. Sparta never got back into
the match after that and the Frieslanders could have increased their
score, denied only by the woodwork and the alert goalkeeping of Kooiman. |
| Krstev
on the wanted list |
29 Apr 2001
|
| After
playing only 4 games for Veendam since arriving on loan from Heerenveen
Mile Krstev seems suddenly to be hot property! Groningen, RKC, Sparta and
German side Borussia München Gladbach are all on the point of getting out
the checkbook. The 21 year-old midfielder, who's contract with Heerenveen
runs out in 2002, joined the Frieslanders in 1997 but has appeared in only
21 matches during those 4 seasons. |
| Heerenveen
smash Fortuna 6 - 1 |
21 Apr 2001
|
| The
Frieslanders have shown a lot of fight in recent matches and, with a game
in hand (they've only played 27 matches), they stand a good chance of a
significant jump up the ladder - if they can win a few before the end of
May. For Fortuna it's essential to grab every point they can get in their
fight ot avoid relegation. Heerenveen destroyed all hope for the
unfortunate Sittards (of them even getting un point) with 4 1st
half goals - anr
by Anthony Lurling in the 13th, another ball in the net from Jeffrey Talan
in the 18th and, 2 minutes later, a second goal from
Mr.Lurling. Marcus Allbäck got the 4th in the 42nd to guarantee
victory - surely there was nothing Fortuna could do about it. The Swede
added another in the 55th before Jochem van der Hoeven finally put one on
the board for the visitors in the 72nd. A last and 6th goal from Johan
Hansma for Heerenveen rounded off the tally for the evening. They are
now on equal 41 points with NAC, who drew with AZ, but pass them by into
9th place because they have a game in hand. |
| RKC
and Heerenveen in 1 - 1 draw |
14 Apr 2001
|
| Heerenveen
were surely disappointed after being defeated by the Van Nistelrooy
inspired PSV and exiting the Cup last Wednesday. The no.5s played host to
the no.9s in a wintery conditions, snow swirling around in the stadium, Anthony Lurling
made the most threatening moves at the home end in the 1st half. After the
braek the snow stopped and the level of play picked up - Lurling finally
got one in the net, a gift courtesy of a defensive blunder, to give them
hope of an away win in the
49th minute, Van Gessel missed the perfect chance to clinch
the win. John van Loenhout earned the Waalwijkers a point with an nicely
taken angle shot in the 82nd. |
| PSV
in Cup Final after 1 - 3 against Heerenveen |
11 Apr 2001
|
| A
match of contrasting techniques this, the home side the team of long balls
and counters, the visitors exhibiting the craft of combinations.
Heerenveen had a terrific chance to take an early lead and turn on the
heat in this first cup semi-final when a defensive blunder by Nikifirov
gave Allbäck the chance in theng minute to beat Waterreus but he
played the ball just a little too long for himself to score, managed to pass it to
Lurling who was left with too shallow an angle to be able to get it into
the net. Still, it was a
nice hors-d'oeuvre -would the rest of the match be as appetising?
Theng quarter of an hour saw a rather insecure-in-defence PSV -
another error, this time by Hofland gave the Frieslanders another shot at
goal and Allbäck, always looking dangerous, shot wide. By the second
quarter of the match though the Eindhovenaars started to wake up and
became increasingly threatening at the Heerenveen end. Heerenveen created
more and better chances during the last stage of the 1st half but, after a
Van Bommel freekick, it was Ruud van Nistelrooy who shot his team into a
rather undeserving 43rd minute lead when he put away a ricochet from a
goalmouth scramble. The Abe Leenstra stadium rocked as their team almost
had an equalizer in theng minute of the 2nd half when JeffreyTalan had the
perfect opportunity to score, but hit it wide. The tempo was higher than
before the break as the home team tried to put their opponents under
pressure. To the dismay of their fans it was Ramzi who tapped in a 2nd goal in the 54th minute to pour cold water on Heerenveen's efforts. It
was going to be a true test of Friesland character if they were to turn
the match around. The teams will face each other once more this season in
Eindhoven on May 5th - a match which could well prove to be PSV's
championship winner. Rommedahl was substituted by back-from-injury Bouma
and an anonymous Kezman was replaced by Bruggink for the last 15 minutes as the Ere
Divisie leaders looked increasingly relaxed and in control while the
northerners struggled to claw their way back into the match - they lacked
a bit of luck tonight and the opposition's extra class was, in the end,
telling. Lurling finally got one back in the 81st but Ruud was there with
an immediate reply in the 82nd to make it 1 - 3 and almost got a hattrick
soon after as he broke free and charged down on Hans Vonk but was denied.
Lurling wriggled through into the penalty box but missed the net as the
clock ticked off the remaining couple of minutes. PSV now have their first
chance of winning the double in 12 years - their chances of achieving that
look better all the time. |
| Heerenveen's
Houttuin out for rest of season |
09 Apr 2001
|
| Heerenveen
defender Max Houttuin is going to miss the rest of this season after only
playing 4 matches since the winter break - he needs an operation to deal
with a problem with his abdomen just above his right groin, possibly
the result of a torn muscle that needs treatment. |
| Heerenveen
give NEC a 5 - 0 beating |
07 Apr 2001
|
| NEC
looked decidedly stronger than the home team in the 1st half but the
Frieslanders were better at converting the chances they created - Anthony
Lurling put the Frieslanders on the scoreboard from the spot on the
halfhour and Mike Nurmela made it 2 - 0 in the 44th. The 2nd half saw a
more confident Heerenveen turn on the heat - four minutes after
the restart Daniël Jenssen took them to a very comfortable 3 - 0 lead and
Sander van Gessel increased that to 4 - 0 in the 58th. Ignacio Tuhuteru
added a 5th 3 minutes before time. They showed off some sharp moves
and finishing tonight which they'll need even more when they play host to
PSV on Wednesday in the Amstel Cup semi-final. |
| Heerenveen
sign Marc Hegeman |
05 Apr 2001
|
| Heerenveen
have signed Emmen's 24 year-old left-footed defender Marc Hegeman who's
transfer-free this summer. He's signed up for two years with an option on
another two. |
| Lurling
gets 2 as Heerenveen beat RBC 2 - 0 |
31 Mar 2001
|
| RBC's
Ere Divisie days are pretty much over after this evening's defeat at the
hands of the Frieslanders. They had one Stefano Ricci shot which hit the
bar but it made a hollow sound in an otherwise less than resounding
performance. Robert Maaskant's squad can start to look forward to the
delights of Toto football next season. They've done well since their
promotion, financially speaking, so it's going to be interesting to see
how long their backers stay behind them. As for Foppe de Haan's crew, they
seem to be swinging back after the post-European-adventure blues and
Anthony Lurling's two goals in the 9th and 63rd give them another
heartwarming 3 points. |
| Verbeek
new trainer Heracles |
19 Mar 2001
|
| Gert-Jan
Verbeek, currently Foppe de Haan's assistant at Heerenveen, is to take
over as Heracles' trainer at the end of the season. Fritz Korbach has been
unable to get much out of the team so far this season (they're currently
sitting in an unimpressive 11th place) and Verbeek (on a two-year
contract) will hopefully fare better. |
| NAC
hang on against Heerenveen 2 - 2 |
17 Mar 2001
|
| The
match got off to a good start, maybe we were going to be treated to a good
old "Avondje NAC" (that's an exciting evening's football to you
mate!). Glen Salmond the score in the 4th minute Daniël Jensen quickly equalizing in the
8th. The home team were the stronger looking side but always had to watch
out for those dangerous Heerenveen counters. The Frieslanders remained
tenacious and, on this showing, will surely rise a few places in the table
before the season's over. Just as we thought it would end in the 1 - 1, Swedish striker Marcus Allbäck
sneaked in what looked like a certain match winner in the 89th for
Heerenveen,
showing again what a good buy he was. Earnest Stewart
snatched back an equalizer in the very last minute to save a point for NAC. |
| Heerenveen
sign Lionel Lord |
17 Mar 2001
|
| Heerenveen
have signed 20 year-old Lionel Lord, currently playing for amateur side
Veere. The striker has signed a contract for one year with an option for
the club to extend it by another 2 years. |
| Heerenveen in
Semi-final after 4 - 2 win against Feyenoord |
14 Mar 2001
|
| A
feisty start to this replay of the Amstel Cup quarter final match
(abandoned in February due to fog). Heerenveen were dangerous down the
wings, and especially from corners, while Feyenoord were quick to counter,
both teams in the mood for attacking football. Anthony Lurling got ther in the 7th minute and Jon Dahl Tomasson answered it in the 14th. A
defensive error by Heerenveen gave Paul Bosvelt the opportunity to make it
1 - 2 for the Feyenoorders in the 29th but Marcus Allbäck scored his
first FA Cup goal to even things up once more. Anthony Lurling got his
second in injury time, totally unmarked after a defensive error by the
Rotterdammers - just how it should be - good old fashioned reckless
Cup football with plenty of goals. The 2nd half promised to be a cracker!
Heerenveen came out firing on all cylinders, really putting the
Rotterdammers under pressure and the crowd were really getting behind them
- an early shot by Jenssen was turned away by Dudek. The game was
committed, at times hard but never ugly and was everything a Cup duel
should be. Jenssen and Allbäck
impressed the most for Heerenveen and, after a period of deadlocked play,
it was only fitting that Jenssen should get a 4th for the Frieslanders to
guarantee them a place in the Semi-final against PSV in the 87th minute.
The remaining added time entertainment was full of little explosions - out
of the blue Feyenoord got a 3rd and late fight-to-the-last breath goal for
a perfect end. Great match, great cup football. My compliments! |
| De
Nooijer returns to Sparta |
02 Mar 2001
|
| Dennis
de Nooijer returns on hire to his old club, Sparta, for the rest of the
season. He's no longer a permanent 1st team fixture at Heerenveen since
Marcus Allbëck's arrival, has had more than his fair share of injuries
and is of the opinion that Foppe de Haan no longer needs/wants him. He
made his Sparta debut on April 2nd 1988 and played for 11 seasons in
Rotterdam before moving north to Heerenveen together with his brother
Gerard. De Nooijer has scored 7 goals in 28 matches with the Frieslanders
and a total of 73 times in 274 Ere Divisie matches. He becomes Wim van Hanegem's 2nd addition to
the squad since taking over (William Rudge being the 1st). |
| Harris
Huizingh stops at end of season |
01 March 2001
|
| Veteran
footballer Harris Huizingh is to end his career at the end of the season.
Heerenveen's 38 year-old striker (the oldest player in the Ere Divisie)
has a recurring problem with his left knee and has decided that enough is
enough. He made his debut for Groningen in the match against Sparta on
April 29th 1984, played 235 Premier division matches and 24 Toto division
games for them, 54 Premier and 69 Toto duels for Veendam and 37 Premier
games for Heerenveen - a grand total of 419 matches and 84 goals.
Not bad for an ex-policeman! |
| Willem
II lose 1 - 6 to Heerenveen |
23 Feb 2001
|
| The
match got off to a spectacular start with a controversial penalty taken in the 4th minute
by Danny Landzaat which put Willem II fleetingly ahead - Marcus Albëck
neutralized it within the minute andd his account for the match - it
was to be his evening. Anthony Lurling made it 1 - 2 in the 28th and
Allbëck got his 2nd and Heerenveen's 3rd in the 32nd minute as the
visitors dominated the 1st half. After the break Jeffrey Talan took the
score to 1 - 4 with a lucky goal which went in off Landzaat's leg in the
65th and 3 minutes later Marcus Allbëck bagged his hattrick with his 3rd
in the 68th. Goals-a-plenty tonight folks! Jeffrey Talan lobbed in his 2nd
in the 89th to complete the evening's celebrations for the Frieslanders.
The performance and result lifts Heerenveen in the table and is a welcome
boost for Foppe de Haan's troops - and a match Willem II will want to put
behind them as quickly as possible. |
| Heerenveen
in goalless draw with Roda |
17 Feb 2001
|
| A
frustrating night for Heerenveen fans as their team struggled to make any
impression whatsoever in this match. They looked uninterested in improving
their table ranking and took Roda with them in their doldrums-football.
Apart from a handfull of chances on both sides the match was a severe
disappointment all round. Roda could have gone ahead early on, but
Anastasiou's shot hit the bar in the 15th, and Nygaard saw his 'goal'
dissallowed in the 58th (though in the replay he was clearly not offside)
while in the 70th Nurmela hit the bar for the Frieslanders. Heerenveen will no doubt console themselves with
the coming quarter final cup match against Feyenoord, abandoned last
Wednesday due to thick mist, on March 14th. Roda will not be unhappy with
an away point. |
| Heerenveen
- Feyenoord Cup match 14th March |
16 Feb 2001
|
| The
Amstel Cup match between Heerenveen and Feyenoord, suspended when mist
made play impossible, will be replayed on March 14th. Although 24 minutes
play had elapsed the teams will play the whole 90 minutes. |
| Heerenveen
- Feyenoord cup match stopped by mist |
15 Feb 2001
|
| The
Amstel Cup quarter final between Heerenveen and Feyenoord was stopped
after 24 minutes play beacuse of the lack of visibility resulting from
thick mist. Fans of both teams chanted that they wanted to see football
and went home disappointed. |
| Niels
Kokmeijer signs with Heerenveen |
09 Feb 2001
|
| Topscorer
at Volendam Niels Kokmeijer (he's scored 7 times this season) has signed
with Heerenveen for 3 years. He starts at the beginning of next season
in Friesland. |
| Heerenveen win
against Feyenoord 1 - 0 |
31 Jan 2001
|
| In
a misty Abe Lenstra stadium Bonaventure
Kalou got sent off in the 2nd minute for lashing out at Anthony Lurling,
forcing Feyenoord to battle on with
only 10 men. They already started the match without the heart of their
midfield - Paul Bosvelt and Patrick Paauwe. Heerenveen missed Gerárd de
Nooijer and Harris Huizingh. Foppe de Haan has seen his team suffer the
consequences of their European adventure in the Champions League - a
string of injured players giving him no opportunity to field his best
eleven. The extra man didn't help the Frieslanders, early chances for
Nurmela and Hansma apart, Feyenoord's defence coping well with the attacks
that came their way. The 2nd half gave every indication that the match
would end in a draw, Feyenoord content to contain Heerenveen, Krstev's
agile over-the-bar shot being the only test Jurek Dudek had to face. He
had little to do in goal and neither did Hans
Vonk at the other end. Just when it looked absolutely certain to be a
goalless match Dennis de Nooijer scored the only goal from a smart one-two
with Anthony Lurling in the 90th minute to
give Heerenveen the points, 13th place and the feeling that they can climb
even further up the table if they keep on improving during
the 2nd half of the season. Feyenoord will now be wondering, after their
poor performance against NAC, whether the Championship title is as secure
as it looked before Christmas. |
| VVV
lose to Heerenveen 1 - 0 |
27 Jan 2001
|
| The
Frieslanders went home with a quarter final confrontation with Feyenoord
in their own Abe Leenstra stadium to look forward to. It took Mika
Nurmela's goal in the 77th minute to make sure of victory but they didn't
really have to work hard to contain the Toto division side. VVV did their
best, and had some moments close to the end when an upset could have
occurred, but the difference in quality was too great. |
| Heerenveen
sign new talent Bakkati and Barto |
26 Jan 2001
|
| Heerenveen
may miss Gerard De Nooijer for a while but have added to their squad with
the signing of two new players - 17 year-old right back Said Bakkati and
16 year-old Martijn Barto have freshly autographed papers for two years
with an option on a further three. |
| Heerenveen
miss De Nooijer for restart season |
24 Jan 2001
|
| Heerenveen's
defender 31 year-old Gerard De Nooijer has injured his knee at the club's
training camp in Spain. He will almost certainly miss this weekend's
Amstel Cup match against First division VVV and the Premier division match
against Feyenoord next wednesday. The news adds to trainer Foppe de Haan's
troubles as he's already without Daniel Jensen, Jesper Hakansson and
Sander van Gessel. De Nooijer goes into hospital for an MRI scan this
Thursday to see what the extent of his injury is. |
| Heerenveen's
Cijntje and End off to Finland |
23 Jan 2001
|
| The
Heerenveen duo Angelo Cijntje and Patrick End, neither of whom had a
regular place in the team, are off to the snowy north and the prospect of
a year on loan to Finnish Premier Division club Kupio PS. The Finns have a
cooperation pact with Heerenveen and the two players are expected to start
the new Finnish season (which runs from spring to autumn due to the arctic
weather) in April. |
| Heerenveen's
Allbäck out of action |
22 Jan 2001
|
| Heerenveen's
Marcus Allbäck, newly arrived at the club from Sweden's Örgryte, will
almost certainly miss theng matches of the 2nd half of the season -
against Feyenoord on Jan 31st and the Amstel Cup match against VVV in
Venlo on Jan 27th. He's injured his groin in training in Spain. |
| Heerenveen's
Daniel Jensen has knee operation |
11 Jan 2001
|
| Heerenveen's
Danish midfielder Daniel Jensen has just been operated on his knee to have
a piece of the miniscus removed. He will be out of action for several
weeks but the Frieslanders hope he will be fit to play against Feyenoord
when the season recommences on January 31st. |
| Berkhout
on trial with Heerenveen |
11 Jan 2001
|
| Heerenveen
are trying out talented 18 year-old forward Wesley Berkhout on their
midseason training trip to Spain. He couldn't join the club, when they
tried to sign him last summer, having already made the move to Italy's
Monza (on a 6 month contract) but has since politely refused an offer to
stay with the club and thinks he will be happier with the more attacking
style of football played in Friesland. |
| Heerenveen
import Swede Allbäck |
02 Jan 2001
|
| The
Swedish international centre half Marcus Allbäck has signed a contract
with Heerenveen for three and a half years. The 27 year-old comes from
Swedish club Örgryte IS and has played 180 professional games with 72
goals to his name (15 in 26 games last season). He is glad to make the
move to Holland where, he says, the level of football played is a notch
higher than at home. |
| RBC
lose to
Heerenveen 0 - 3 |
17 Dec 2000
|
| The
Frieslanders won for the first time in 9 matches. RBC will be worried that
they've not scored in the last 4 games and things really start to look
somber for Robert Maaskant's crew. Romano Denneboom, Jeffrey Talan
and Santi Kolk scored for Heerenveen who could do with the points. |
| De
Nooijer's appeal successful |
15 Dec 2000
|
| The
Heerenveen striker Dennis de Nooijer's appeal against his 4 match ban is a
success, reduced to a 1 match ban (for a different 'offence') with a
possibility that that also is quashed. |
| Heerenveen
lose to Willem II |
14 Dec 2000
|
| Heerenveen
are a shadow of the side who entertained Dutch crowds last season with
their refreshing, attacking style. Foppe de Haan's surplus of good will,
built up over the last 15 years in Friesland, is running out and the
14,000 fans were letting their discontent be heard loud and clear. The
home side looked weak, depleted by injury and without enough players of
calibre to cope with the situation. Plus they just can't seem to score.
Anthony Lurling, last season in such good form that he was top scorer
(earning himself an Oranje cap), has netted a meagre 3 goals so far.
Willem II aren't doing much better either and both teams made a hesitant
start. Bombarda and Arts had early chances for the visitors, while
Heerenveen struggled to put moves together. Even Dennis de Nooijer's
presence (he's got a match suspension hanging over his head) couldn't
provide any sting for the home team. A penalty taken by Arts for Henema's
handball gave Willem II their winning goal. Despite taking the initiative
in the 2nd half, and an extra forward 20 minutes before time (Denneboom
for Talan), Heerenveen simply couldn't get one in, Lurling missing a great
chance. They sink further down the table (16 points from 16 games) and can
only hope for a revival of fortunes in the New Year. |
| Vitesse
and Heerenveen share the points 0 - 0 |
10 Dec 2000
|
| The
major part of the match was a dull affair. It took an hour before
Vitesse looked as though they were really interested in winning 3 points. Heerenveen's Dennis de Nooijer got a red card in the 65th
minute to help them along but it was to no avail. Vitesse's Dejan
Stefanovic decided he too wanted to see the dressing room before his
teammates. Marc van Hintum got his 2nd yellow and joined them a quarter
of an hour before the final whistle but Heerenveen were unable to profit
from their superiority in numbers and so Vitesse remain for more than a
year unbeaten in the Gelredome. |
| Heerenveen
and AZ in 1 - 1 draw |
30 Nov 2000
|
| Both
teams are going through a rough patch and this was obvious to everyone
tonight. Dennis de Nooijer had something to celebrate though - his first
goal in 2 years! Heerenveen have lots of injured players at the moment.
Harris Huizingh for one, Jeffrey Talan and Sander van Gessel were both on
the bench, but are also suffering, so it was good to see Dennis' return
after being out through injury himself for so long. He worked hard
throughout the match and did his best to make up for his teammates lack of
inspiration. His goal came in the 13th minute and he narrowly missed a 2nd
in the 54th. AZ did their duty but were as tired looking a team as
Heerenveen. Nelisse blasted a 1st half shot at goalie Hans Vonk who
collected the ball easily. The visitors looked a bit better in the 2nd
half and Nelisse got them a point with his 12th goal of the season in the
71st minute (he's equal top scorer with Elkhattabi). Maybe trainer
Gerard van der Lem's problems with the AZ bosses has something to do with
the team's lacklustre performance? |
| Investigation
into Jack de Gier's 'elbow' |
28 Nov 2000
|
| The
incident in last Saturday's match between NEC's striker Jack de Gier and
Heerenveen's defender Tieme Klompe - De Gier allegedly elbowing or
punching his 'opponent' - will be investigated by the Dutch FA. |
| NEC
and Heerenveen call it a draw 0 - 0 |
26 Nov 2000
|
| Johan
Neesken's side dominated the match but couldn't score. Both sides had a
man sent off - top scorer Georgi Hristov for NEC in the 73rd minute and
Heerenveen's Arek Radomski soon after. At least Heerenveen have made an
end to their run of 2 defeats. |
| Heerenveen
no match for PSV 1 - 4 |
19 Nov 2000
|
| The
Friesian team have never won at home against PSV and, although last
season's meeting was a cracker, this match was only further proof of PSV's
continuing superiority and evidence of Mateja Kezman's growing confidence
up front for the Eindhovenaars. He scored a hat trick in the 1st half
(13th, 18th and 44th minutes) and a 4th in the 80th minute to put the
final nail in Heerenveen's coffin. In the 2nd half PSV allowed Heerenveen
into the match but had no real difficulties in coping and even had the
better of the scoring chances. Nurmela restored a little honour for
Heerenveen with a goal from a well hit freekick in the 85th minute. PSV
are now in 2nd place in the table and Heerenveen sink to 13th. Foppe de
Haan will be wondering if his magic has deserted him. |
| Roda
punish Heerenveen 3 - 1 |
12 Nov 2000
|
| Heerenveen's
form remains inconsistent and Roda will be happy with their confidence
building performance today. The match began promisingly and, once
Heerenveen got into motion, both teams had chances to score. It
wasn't until the 31st
minute that Kevin van Dessel blasted one in from 25 meters to give the
home side the lead, Yannis Anastasiou adding a 2nd in the 33rd with a
nicely placed chip which totally surprised Hans Vonk in goal. Brazilian
Rafael Viera came on to try and inject some life into Heerenveen's
attacks, almost succeeding with a great run through Roda's defence only to
have his attempt reach goalie Roorda. Nygaard added a 3rd for the home
team in the 58th, Heerenveen finally getting a goal on the scoreboard
thanks to Nurmela in the 62nd. The visitors were lucky that Hans Vonk was
on form and in place to prevent more goals in the last stage of the
contest. |
| Heerenveen
draw with Valencia 1 - 1 |
08 Nov 2000
|
| The
team from the province of Friesland return home with heads held high at
the end of their European adventure. Lacking enough quality and firepower
to really pose a threat to Europe's top clubs their last match was one
where they were on equal terms with what was more or less a B team in
Valencia. The Spanish could have done without the game as they have plenty
of injured players - Kily Gonzalez (the match winner in Holland), captain
Mendieta, Keeper Canizaris, Sanchez, Angloma, Carboni and Deschamps
were all missing. Foppe de Haan thought perhaps that their replacements
might use the match to impress. Valencia began in defensive mood, allowing
Heerenveen to come close, but not too close, to their goal area and hoping
to score from a counter. After chances for Lurling and Jensen it was
indeed the home team who scored first in the 10th minute when Angulo's
shot hit the crossbar and rebounded to Alonso who put it away.
Heerenveen remained unimpressed and continued to play well and were
rewarded with a goal in the 37th minute. Harris Huizingha blasted a shot
at goal which ricocheted off a couple of Spaniards before Vennema
scrambled it into the net. They played well in the 2nd half and managed to
hold on until the end, despite Arjan Ebbingen getting a red card in the
60th minute. The financial reward (175,00 Euros) for their excursion into
Europe will undoubtedly be welcome and this result will do much to soften
the blow of it coming to an end. |
| Tired
Heerenveen draw with Sparta 1-1 |
02 Nov 2000
|
| Tired,
and missing too many players through injury, Heerenveen began the match
aggressively and had chances to score through Krstev, Talan and, in
particular, the tireless veteran Harris Huizingh. All failed to deliver
the quality of finishing necessary to see the ball hit the back of the
net. Their fans were nonetheless rewarded with a goal by Anthony
Lurling in the 25th minute after several defensive errors by Sparta.
Minutes later Sparta defender Marilia practically gave them another when
he almost scored an own goal. After that Heerenveen started to run out of
steam as errors in midfield crept in. Their wingers Lurling and Nurmela
saw little of the ball and Sparta began to smell blood. Langerak had the
best of their chances but wasn't sharp enough to capitalise on a mistake
in Sparta's defence and Boukhari had a goal dissallowed. The 2nd half was
more of the same - Sparta's goalie Kooiman kept out Lurling's shot after a
run down the left and Elkhattabi was denied a goal by the home side's Hans
Vonk in goal. He now shares top goal scoring honours with NEC's Hristov
(both have 10). Langerak headed in the equalizer for Sparta in the 80th
minute. Heerenveen have now dropped to 10th place and Sparta have climbed
a little further out of the danger zone. |
| Heerenveen
in tired win De Graafschap 1 - 0 |
28 Oct 2000
|
| The
team was tired and, after last Wednesday's match against Lyon, the playing
surface hadn't had enough time to recover. Probably the worms were tired
too! It made it also difficult for opponents De Graafschap to get into
gear. The first half saw little action in front of goal, Jeffrey Talan had
the best chance in the 17th minute but saw his effort go wide. De
Graafshap were also uninspired. The beginning of the second half saw a
revitalised Heerenveen (Foppe de Haan had given them some dressing room
encouragement) and Anthony Lurling's header bounced into goal off the
ground in the 51st minute. From then on De Graafschap's goalie Stefan
Postma was kept busy by the Frieslanders efforts to increase their goal
tally. In particular Mile Krstev, substituting for Daniel Jensen,
gave him a hard time. Foppe watched as his team sent balls over the bar
or, waiting too long with the ball, were robbed of it. De Graafschap had a
couple of minor chances to score through Eric Viscaal and Zico Tumba but
that was it. The one goal was enough to give Heerenveen their
points. |
| Lyon
end Heerenveen's European dream 0 - 2 |
25 Oct 2000
|
| Olympique
Lyon have ended Heerenveen's dream of progressing further in this season's
Champions League. It was expected that both teams would come out fighting
and they didn't dissapoint. Heerenveen had a couple of good chances in the
first half to score. The French goalie Gregory Coupet made an excellent
save in the third minute when Nurmela hit a free kick into the corner but
saw it tipped over the bar. Anthony Lurling had too much time to think
when, close to halftime, his opportunity to put Heerenveen ahead presented
itself. The team from Lyon also had their chances to score but were
equally unsuccessful. The home side pushed even harder to score in the
second half and Huizingh had an excellent opportunity when he received a
long ball from his goalie Vonk. Unfortunately Lyon's Coupet saw it coming
and was there to meet him - his attempt to chip the ball over the
keeper failed. The French were more successful in the 68th minute when
Malbranque scored an easy goal after receiving a pass from Dhorasoo. The
team from Friesland province had complained of fatigue after their last
Premier Division meeting with Feyenoord and this perhaps explained the
errors in defence. The second French goal was not long in coming - in the
78th minute it was again a pass from Dhorasoo which allowed Steve Marlet
to end Heerenveen's dream of a second round place in the Champions League.
Any hopes they may have had of a place in the UEFA Cup have also been
dashed. Third place at the end of the group matches would have qualified
them for another European adventure, but it was not to be. Olympiakos won
against Valencia which means third place in the group is an impossibility. |
| Weakened
Heerenveen meet Lyon |
24 Oct 2000
|
| Foppe
de Haan (Heerenveen's trainer) has a long list of injured players who will
be missing the confrontation with Olympique Lyon. De Nooijer,Tuhuteru,
Nwankpa, and Houttuin are definitely out and Jensen, Ebbinge, Talan, Holm
and Hansma are doubtful. |
| Heerenveen
win 1 - 0 against Olympiakos |
17 Oct 2000
|
| Heerenveen
won their first Champions League points in a scrappy and uninspiring
match. They started as though highly motivated but after the first 15
minutes the tempo dropped considerably and there was not much on pitch
activity to enjoy. Mika Nurmela had a really good shot at goal from a free
kick but it went wide. Olympiakos had the advantage of two weeks rest (the
Greek League had been suspended due to a dispute between the Sports
Minister and the Greek FA) but were obviously going to be happy with an
away draw. Most of the time they played in their own half and Heerenveen
were not much better - they had a lot of trouble getting an attack going
and kept playing the ball back in their attempts to reach the Greek goal.
Heerenveen persevered in the second half and worked really hard but saw balls
fly over or to the side of the net. Their determination was finally
rewarded in the 82nd minute - Mike Nurmela hit a perfect free kick from
the right which Daniel Janssen headed with equally perfect timimg past
Olympiakos' Dimitris Eleftheropoulos. Heerenveen have won their first
European points but remain in 4th place in their group and need to be in
3rd place to play in the UEFA Cup next year. |
| Heerenveen
draw with RKC Waalwijk 1 - 1 |
15 Oct 2000
|
| Foppe
de Haan's team missed a lot of players through injury but started well,
Talan put them ahead early on (15th minute) but once Arjan Human scored
for RKC in the 46th minute the team from Friesland lost their grip on the
match and RKC were allowed to control the midfield, Heerenveen making too
many mistakes there as well as in defence. Despite various changes and
substitutions, including putting on the new young Brazilian addition to
Heerenveen's squad (Veira) the match ended in stalemate. |
| Dennis
de Nooijer injured again |
13 Oct 2000
|
| SC
Heerenveen will have to miss Dennis de Nooijer who has broken a bone in
his foot. He was out of action for 10 months and had just returned to
active duty for his club - after only one league match he's out of action
again for two months. |
| Heerenveen
lose to Olympiakos Piraeus |
27 Sep 2000
|
| The
team from Friesland had their third Champion's League defeat in Athens
tonight. They came out fighting and had two chances to score in the first
five minutes (completely surprising the Greeks) and were the more
impressive team in the first half. The second half belonged to Olympiakos,
whose passing improved enormously, driving the Dutch side back,
finally scoring two goals before cruising through the last 15
minutes. Heerenveen seemed to accept the inevitable and went down to
a team with more class, aggression and maturity. Foppe de Haan
(Heerenveen's trainer) was happy with his team's efforts and thought their
play had improved progressively during the three Champions' League matches
- a good learning experience (small compensation perhaps for the pain of
losing but better than not having taken part at all). |
| Heerenveen
beaten at home by Valencia 0 - 1 |
20 Sep 2000
|
| After
their defeat at the hands of Lyon last week Heerenveen suffered
dissappointment at home to Valencia. The team from Friesland played well
and worked hard but were unable to create enough scirng chances. The
Spanish side were just that bit stronger and one goal scored from a
counter attack was enough to decide the match. |
| Who
the hell is Foppe de Haan? |
13 Sep 2000
|
| Heerenveen
may have lost last night in Lyon but their trainer Foppe de Haan will not
lose any sleep over his team's performance in their first European
encounter. Mr. de Haan is a gentleman with both feet on the ground, a
healthy attitude to the sport and a growing reputation, even outside of
Holland's 'imposing' borders, for his ideas on how to achieve better
players via his individual ideas on training. Last year he was invited by
UEFA to give a demonstration of these ideas to instructors from member
countries' training organisations. He has fond memories (he's now reached
the ripe 'old' age of 57) of teams and trainers of the past - the
Dutch team of '74 ("an ideal team"), Lobanovski's Dynamo Kiev in
the 80's, 14 days he spent with Vaclav Jezek at Feyenoord (an experience
which left a deep impression on him - in particular the man's
conscientious and constructive approach to training footballers). His own
career in Holland has been a long climb from the ranks of amateur football
(he was never a prof) via his first chance with Heerenveen's first
team in 1985 (when his ideas were found to be too 'different'), 6
years coaching the second and youth teams until he was finally given the
chance in 1992 to work with a first team willing to listen and take
on his ideas. Heerenveen were promoted to the Dutch Division One that
season and haven't looked back since. This is man with heart for football,
who would almost rather see his team lose while playing attractive
football than adopt a defensive stance to make sure of getting points. An
old school man of conviction perhaps, for whom integrity is not a dirty
word, there will hopefully always be a place in the footballing top for
such men, convinced of what they have to offer the game. FootballNL
wish him every success. |
| Heerenveen
lose 3-1 in Lyon |
13 Sep 2000
|
| After
a disastrous start to the match, which saw them 2-0 down within 10
minutes, Heerenveen got a goal back before half-time. This brought
them back into the match but they weren't able to change the balance
sufficiently in their favour. Probably intimidated by their first European
encounter they will undoubtedly get all the support they need from their
trainer Foppe de Haan in analysing what went wrong for them and what can
be done to bring about improvements before their next European encounter
with Valencia. |
| Heerenveen
back on track |
26 Aug 2000
|
| Heerenveen,
having lost their first game of the season, showed on Saturday
that they are still capable of creating a few upsets in the Champions
League this season. Holland's Friesian team (they come from the Dutch
province of Friesland) created so many goal scoring opportunities that
it was amazing at the final whistle that these were not reflected in the
2-0 scoreline. Both goals were beauties, the first a bullet from outside
of the penalty box, the second a cleverly placed shot from just within
the penalty area. Heerenveen's coach Foppe de Haan was extremely pleased
with the three points and his team's solid defensive performance but
expressed his discontent at the amount of wasted chances. |
| Heerenveen
ready for Champions League |
01
Aug 2000
|
|
Heerenveen trainer Foppe de Haan is convinced his team can do well in the
Champions League. He has managed to keep his team healthy and intact while
putting in a lot of preparation, there have even been visits to Louis van
Gaal and Leo Beenhakker for advice. Due to the club's participation in the
Champions' League this season Heerenveen have increased their
potential earnings by 4 million
Euros from 13 million to 17million Euros.
