| Gabor
Torma signs for Groningen |
09 July 2001
|
| Roda
have agreed terms with Groningen and Gabor Torma has signed a contract
with the Oosterpark stadium side for 4 years. The 24 year-old has been
plagued by injuries during the last two seasons and, during that time, has
only played 15 matches for the Kerkrade club. He's also said, on
Groningen's website, that he and Sef Vergoossen (the previous Roda
trainer) never saw eye to eye, which was a contributing factor in his lack
of 1st team appearances. Although new trainer Jan van Dijk wanted to keep
him in the squad, the Hungarian striker felt it was time to move on and he
now joins his 3rd club (he's previously played for Hungarian side Dunaferr
and Belgian club Circle Brugge). |
| Billy
Maximiano signs for Den Bosch |
23 June 2001
|
| Groningen's
Billy Maximiano has signed for 3 years with newly promoted Den Bosch
who've paid €45,000 Euros to buy off his old contract which ran until
2002. The 27 year-old moved to the Oosterpark club from Dordrecht '90
(where he scored 4 goals in 24 matches) in the summer of 1999 but the
left-footed, former Excelsior striker has made only 26 appearances in the
last two years. |
| Ignacio
Tuhuteru signs for Groningen |
13 June 2001
|
| The
negotiations are over and striker Ignacio Tuhuteru has signed a
contract with Groningen for 3 years after moving from FC Zwolle to
Heerenveen at the beginning of the season. His new club have bought out
the 27 year-old's contract (he'd signed up for two years) for an
undisclosed sum. |
| Tuhuteru
to sign for Groningen? |
09 June 2001
|
| Heerenveen's
Ignacio Tuhuteru is close to moving to Groningen after the two clubs
agreed to the transfer. The 27 year-old former Ajax, RBC and Zwolle
striker joined Heerenveen in 2000 but has failed to secure a regular place
in the 1st team, making only 15 appearances last season. He's still to
agree personal terms with his new club but they expect that he will
replace Peter Hoekstra (on loan last season from Ajax and probably off to
Portugese side Vitória Guimarães). |
| Roel
Janssen stays with Veendam |
31 May 2001
|
| Groningen
have decided to allow Roel Janssen to continue playing for Toto side
Veendam where he's been on hire since January. The 25 year-old defender
joined Groningen last summer but has been unable to play for them because
of injury problems. He was hired out to Veendam to regain match fitness
with the intention that he return to the Ere Divisie club this summer but
will now start next season with the Toto club. |
| PSV
and Groningen seal Robben deal |
25 May 2001
|
| PSV
and Groningen have more or less completed the deal involving the
sale of Arjen Robben. The 17 year-old striker will become the most
expensive teenager in Dutch footballing history if the deal goes through -
Groningen can expect between €3,6 and €4,5 million Euros on their bank
account and a share in any future transfer fee if the youngster gets sold
by PSV. The most paid previously for a teenage player was the €3,4
million Euros Ajax paid Sampdoria for Clarence Seedorf in 1995. |
| Gregoor
van Dijk signs for Roda |
24 May 2001
|
| Arjen
Robben ready to sign for PSV |
20 May 2001
|
| Groningen's
youth star Arjen Robben is close to signing a contract worth €4 million
Euros with PSV for 5 years. He's staying at Groningen while he finishes
school and develops a little more as a player next season before making
the move to Eindhoven in 2002. |
| Dominique
van Dijk signs for Cambuur |
19 May 2001
|
| Mile
Krstev signs for Groningen |
19 May 2001
|
| Heerenveen's
Mile Krstev has signed a contract for 4 years with Groningen. The
Macedonian defender has only made 12 appearances for the Frieslanders
since arriving in 1997 and has been on loan to Veendam this season. |
| Arjen
Robben out for remainder of season |
18 May 2001
|
| Groningen's
Arjen Robben will miss the rest of the season after straining his ankle in
the match against Willem II last weekend. The 17 year-old striker (currently
much in demand by other clubs) will also possibly miss the Dutch Under
21s World Cup qualifier against Estland on June 1st. |
| Willem
II beat Groningen 3 - 0 |
12 May 2001
|
| Willem
II are 8th on 45 points, 5 behind RKC who play at De Graafschap tonight,
and can play out their last few matches of the season in attacking-style
if they so wish (they've nothing to win or lose now). Groningen are 13th,
7 points behind Twente (who have a game in hand) and could do with a few
more useful performances, and points, before they
say farewell to Arjan Robben (almost certainly off to PSV next
season). Denny Landzaat put the "Tricolores" ahead with a
spot-shot in the 33rd minute, Mariano Bombarda got a
2nd in the 71st and the 3 - 0 came from him in the dying seconds. Groningen stay
where they are and so do the "Tricolores". |
| PSV
make official bid for Arjan Robben |
13 May 2001
|
| Groningenhunt for Robben's replacement |
07 May 2001
|
| Arjen
Robben has been the target of several clubs, domestic and foreign,
recently (including Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord). Groningen in turn are on the
lookout for a possible replacement and have targeted Heerenveen's Ignacio
Tuhuteru (played under the northerners' trainer Dwight Lodeweges at
Zwolle), Veendam's Mile Krestev (on loan from Heerenveen) and Go Ahead
Eagles' Jochem de Weerdt (scored 11 goals this season). |
| Un
point for Groningen and Sparta 1 - 1 |
06 May 2001
|
| Sparta
really need at least un point from this afternoon's match if they want
to avoid keeping RBC company at the bottom of the table (they're in 17th on
23, 2 points behind Fortuna who are 2 behind 15th-placed De Graafschap).
Groningen have no ambitions (being in 13th place, trailing Twente by 5
points). The visitors started the match as if they had a point to prove -
namely that they belong at the top. That man Ali Elkattabi was on hand to put the
Rotterdammers ahead with a shot-in-the-arm spot-shot in the 28th minute.
Sparta dominated the 1st half but the northerners came out after the break
to put things right. Within 5 minutes of substitute Dejan Curovic
appearing he got a late-in-the-2nd half equalizer in the
77th. Both teams stay where they were, but a point richer - Sparta in
17th on 24 (resigned to fighting for their place in the Ere Divisie in the
end-of-season playoffs) and Groningen in 13th on 33. |
| PSV
want Groningen's Arjan Robben |
02 May 2001
|
| Fortuna
and Groningen share points 1 - 1 |
28 Apr 2001
|
| Fortuna
are in 16th place - fighting to get and stay clear of the relegation zone
while Groningen are in 12th on 31 points, 7 ahead of the unfortunate
Sittardians. Still shaking after their 6 - 1 defeat in Heerenveen
last week the home team looked as ineffective as ever. In fact the
forwards on both sides are the most unproductive in the Ere Divisie and it
took until the 2nd half before Paul Jansen gave the visitors the advantage in the 57th
minute. Groningen seemed satisfied with the one goal and pulled back in
defence which gave Joost Volmer the chance to get a late equalizer in the 85th to save a point for Fortuna. |
| Emmen
want Groningen's Maximiano and Visser |
27 Apr 2001
|
| Emmen
are interested in signing Groningen's Billy Maximiano and Hans Visser to
plug the hole left by the departure of Mark Hegeman and Erik Eleveld (off
to Heerenveen), Berry Hoogeveen (off to Heracles) and Leo Koswal and
Gerard Kocks (who are no longer needed/wanted). Maximiano and Visser
joined Groningen in 1999 from, respectively, Dordrecht and Harelbeek but
are not getting regular 1st team action with the northerners. |
| Return
to Ajax for Hoekstra |
26 Apr 2001
|
| Peter
Hoekstra has been told by Groningen, where
he's been on loan from Ajax, that he can return to Amsterdam.
The northerners have declined to make use of an option to buy the left
winger for €770,000 Euros - he's
not produced the quality of play they are looking for and has
also been pushed out of the team by the steadily improving Arjen Robben.
It's the 2nd time the 28 year-old has returned after being hired out
unsuccessfully to another club - he spent a while playing for Spanish 2nd
division side Compostela. |
| All
the van Dijks leave Groningen |
12 Apr 2001
|
| Dominique
van Dijk is the latest, and last, of his family to take the decision to
leave the club. His father is off to become Sef Vergoosen's successor as
trainer at Roda and his brother, 19 year-old midfielder Gregor (scorer of
3 goals in 22 games), has already decided to try and join up with his
father. The Oosterpark crowd have been giving Dominique a rough ride with
their taunts (they've always thought the brothers enjoyed preferential
treatment under 'daddy' Dijk) and he's had enough - two Toto sides are
already showing interest in the 21 year-old (scorer of 2 goals in 38
games). |
| Groningen
go down to rampaging Roda 1 - 3 |
08 Apr 2001
|
| Roda
took the lead through Tom Soetaers in the 17th minute and went further
ahead in the 25th courtesy of Edrissa Sonko. Hugo got one back for the
home team in the 37th but Yannis Anastasiou clinched the points with a 3rd
for the visitors in the 80th. |
| Groningen
win friendly against Trelleborgs FF |
27 Mar 2001
|
| Groningen
have won a friendly against Sweden's no.6 side Trelleborgs FF in a rather
unentertaining match where both teams created few opportunities. Martin
Drentd the score in the 19th minute and Gregor van Dijk put away a
penalty to make the final score 2 - 0. |
| Lodeweges
new trainer Groningen |
21 Mar 2001
|
| Dwight
Lodeweges has changed direction after breaking
off talks with FC Twente about taking over as trainer and has signed
up with Groningen as replacement for Jan van Dijk (off to Roda JC). This
means, of course, that the highly-tipped-to-take-the-job
Martin Koopman will stay at Veendam until something better comes
along. Dwight played for the following clubs: VVOP (amateurs), Go Ahead
Eagles ), Edmonton Drillers ), Montreal Maniacs
(1983), Minnesota Strikers ), Go Ahead Eagles (due to a player
shortage in 1991). As trainer he's looked after Go Ahead Eagles youth
squad ), Eagles Ass. trainer ), VVOG (amateurs
1995-Dec 1998), FC Zwolle (Dec. 1998-2001). |
| Martin
Koopman moves to Groningen, Schrijver stays |
21 Mar 2001
|
| Martin
Koopman has completed round one of the talks which will almost certainly
lead to his instatement as Groningen's new trainer next
season. The 44
year-old former Go Ahead Eagles, Twente and Cambuur Leuuwaarden player has
also been trainer at Den Bosch and currently looks after Veendam. Hans
Schrijver is to stay on at FC Groningen as assistant to Martin Koopman. 41
year-old Schrijver replaced him as the northerners' assistant trainer when
Koopman departed for Den Bosch in October 1998. |
| NEC
beat Groningen 1 - 0 |
18 Mar 2001
|
| NEC
will be glad they've got Wisgerhof on loan from Vitesse - he scored the
only goal of the afternoon in the 7th minute - plus the fact that this
was their first win in 9 games, leaving them in 9th place while the
northerners are 13th. They were marginally the better of the two sides
in a match which failed to ignite, Groningen lacking the punch up front
to convert rare chances into goals. |
| Koeman
says no - maybe Koopman says yes? |
17 Mar 2001
|
| Now
that Erwin Koeman has signed a new contract as assistant to Eric Gerets at
PSV (and most likely to take over as trainer when Gerets leaves) he has
ended all speculation about him going to Groningen. It has come as a blow
to the northerners and all eyes are now focussed on the next candidate
most likely to.......and that is Veendam's trainer Martin Koopman. The 44
year-old former Go Ahead Eagles, Twente and Cambuur Leuuwaarden player was
assistant to Jan van Dijk between 1997 and 1998 and has trained Den Bosch,
helping them gain promotion to the Ere Divisie before taking over from
Azing Griever at Veendam halfway through last season. |
| Erwin
Koeman new trainer Groningen? |
14 Mar 2001
|
| Erwin
Koeman is at the top of Groningen's wanted list to succeed Jan van Dijk
who is off to Roda JC as new trainer. The 39 year-old, brother of Ronald,
began his footballing career with the club in 1978 and ended it with them
20 years later. He's currently looking after PSV's reserve team and
expects to get his official coaching diploma in a few months time. |
| Jan
van Dijk new Roda trainer |
13 Mar 2001
|
| Groningen's
Jan van Dijk becomes Roda JC's new trainer as of next season. He's signed
a contract for 3 years and succeeds Sef Vergoossen who's off to Racing
Genk. |
| Groningen
have no use for Hoekstra |
12 Mar 2001
|
| FC
Groningen will not be making use of the opportunity to buy Peter Hoekstra
from Ajax. He's been on loan from the Amsterdammers this season but has
not impressed and the northerners think the asking price of €780,000
Euros too high anyway. |
| Ajax
draw at Groningen 3 - 3 |
11 Mar 2001
|
| This
entertaining match got off with a deluge of goals, 4 in theng quarter of an
hour - Machlasd proceedings in the 1st minute with a simple
goal after Roy Beukenkamp 'cleared' the ball straight into the Greek's
path (it looked as though he used his hands to control the ball but the
referee thought otherwise), Arjen Robben showed his skill with a set up
for Hugo to equalize in the 8th, Arveladze returned the lead to the Amsterdammers in the 11th
after a bad clearance by Joost Broerse
and Arjen Robben evened things out again in the 15th by coolly sliding the
ball under Fred Grim. After the early 'goalburst' the game turned into a
battle for contol of the midfield and on the stroke of
halftime Cedric van der Gun's cross Rafael van der Vaart got Ajax's 3rd. Both teams worked hard with
some good old fashioned attacking football in the 2nd half and Dejan Curovic snatched
a deserved goal in the 86th to grab a
share in the points for Groningen. |
| Boussaboun
moves from Den Haag to Groningen |
10 Mar 2001
|
| Ali
Boussaboun is moving to Groningen from current Toto address ADO Den Haag
at the end of the season. The 21 year-old striker has signed a contract
for 3 seasons with the Oosterpark club after turning down an offer to
extend his stay in Den Haag (he's been with ADO for 5 years) where he's
scored 7 times this season. |
| Groningen
in goalless draw with NAC |
25 Feb 2001
|
| This
was a relatively entertaining, if goalless, match where the Groningers
had the best of the rare moments of action. The 1st half highlight was a
missed penalty for the home side by Kurt Elshot - the 23 year-old former
Jong Oranje player hit the woodwork in the 40th minute. The 2nd half was
less entertaining than the 1st, NAC choosing a more defensive approach,
a string of substitutions on both sides failing to alter the stalemate.
After today's meeting NAC are currently 10th and Groningen 13th in the
table. |
| Groningen
beat Twente 2 - 0 |
18 Feb 2001
|
| This
was a match full of sloppy play and careless fouls, Twente being the
better team technically but unable to profit from thengs when they
came. Scott Booth was the main mover for Fred Rutten in midfield, but
the trainer saw Ellery Cairo, Booth and Chris de Witte's goal attempts
stopped by Roy Beukenkamp. Groningen did more with the fewer
opportunities that came their way and two 2nd half goals, a Peter
Hoekstra shot in the 47th and Hugo's header in the 90th, clinched the
match to the approval of the Oosterpark stadium fans this afternoon.
Twente fans were less pleased and pelted the pitch with whatever was at
hand. Groningen leapfrog Twente in the table and are well clear of the
danger zone. |
| Feyenoord
back on top after 1 - 0 against Groningen |
11 Feb 2001
|
| Lucky
Feyenoord got away with the points tonight thanks to an own goal by
Groningen's Melchior Schoenmakers. The first half saw Groningen living in
hope of an upset or at least the away draw, Curovic missing with a header
by a mile the possibler for them early in the 1st half. Feyenoord
looked rather dull, Jan-Dahl Tomasson having the best shot but hitting the
post. Bert Marwijk obviously had something to say at half-time because the
Rotterdammers came out firing on all cylinders and unleashed a string of
attacks. Poor finishing, bad luck and inability to grab the opportunites
when they came prevented any goals. It took Schoenmakers own goal to
clinch 3 points for Feyenoord allowing them to leapfrog PSV, who'd gone to
the no.1 spot after their 3 - 0 win against AZ yesterday, and put them
back on top. |
| Groningen's
Gregoor van Dijk out for 3 weeks |
08 Feb 2001
|
| Groningen's
defender Gregoor van Dijk is out of action for the next 3 weeks after
injuring himself in a duel during practice. |
| PSV
beat Groningen 3 - 0 |
31 Jan 2001
|
| Groningen
held out for the first half hour, firmly dug in at the back, as PSV
pressed forward but failed to make an impression on the solid-as-a-rock
defence. An early header by Nifikirov went over in the 5th minute from a
Bruggink corner and Kolkka's shot was saved by Roy Beukenkamp. Despite the
visitors' tight defence (with close
marking, forcing PSV to probe patiently) it wasn't long before Mateja
Kezman was back in action again, scoring in the 35th minute. Johann Vogel
celebrated the recent signing of a new contract with a goal in the 41st.
The 2nd half was easy going for the home side - they had loads of chances
to score but the finishing was sloppy until Mark
van Bommel made it 3-0 in the 65th. Groningen's Erwin van der Looi got
sent off in the 75th after his 2nd yellow card, but even that wasn't
enough incentive to go on a goal scoring spree. The new young Brazilian
signing 18 year-old Marquinho came on for the last 10 minutes to make his
acquaintance with the crowd and the pitch. The valuable points go to
PSV, closing the gap with leaders Feyenoord (who lost at Heerenveen) to
two points. The 2nd half of the season is already hotting upo and it's
only just begun! |
| Hugo
stays with Groningen |
31 Jan 2001
|
| After
seeing his compatriot Leonardo make a move to Feyenoord earlier this week
Hugo Alves Velame has signed a contract for another 4 years at the
Oosterpark club. The 24 year-old joined Groningen originally in 1997 from
Brazilian side Flamengo. |
| Groningen
suspend Drent |
30 Jan 2001
|
| Groningen's
top scorer Martin Drent has been handed out a week's suspension and a fine
on top for his 'misbehaviour' during the squad's training camp in Cyprus
last week. He misses the home game against Ajax on Sunday and away at PSV
tomorrow (Wednesday) - it must have been serious because he's not welcome
at the training sessions this week either. |
| Joey
Hardarsson plays out season with MVV |
14 Jan 2001
|
| The
Icelandic midfielder Joey Hardarsson, who will be joining Groningen in
July on a 3-year contract, is playing out the season with MVV. The
Icelandic season has closed down due to the arctic weather, and Joey needs
to stay match fit before starting at his new club. |
| Groningen
want to keep their Brazilians |
21 Dec 2000
|
| The
young Brazilians Leonardo and Hugo are to be offered a new contract for 4
years when their current one with Groningen runs out at the end of this
season. they were the stars of the win against Feyenoord last weekend and
the club will be glad if they decide to stay. |
| Groningen
surprise
Feyenoord 1 - 0 |
17 Dec 2000
|
| The
northerners more than held their own in the 1st half despite a list of
injured absentees. Drent and Curovic were missing upfront which gave 16
year old Arjen Robben the chance
to show his skills again, his Dec 3rd appearance against RKC being one of
the highlights of that game. Peter van Vossen was doing a good job of
replacing the passport-problem bedevilled Leonardo for Feyenoord - watch
Speaker's Corner for a story coming soon on this subject. In the second
half both teams seemed to grow more and more resigned to a gentlemanly
draw when Magnus Johansson surprised one and all with a terrific 30 metre
freekick which missiled its way to the back of the net. |
| De
Graafschap lose 0 - 4 to Groningen |
10 Dec 2000
|
| The
northerners won 3 much needed points tonight. De Graafschap, under
temporary trainer Koolhof, now find themselves in the unenviable position
of having lost as many matches as Fortuna. Hazem Azam and Patrick Ax have
gone, to Udinese and NEC, leaving their old team in dire need of
reinforcements (the sooner the better). Their fans are still behind them
(the Vijverberg stadium was sold out) but are letting their impatience be
known. Groningen have been able to attract the likes of Peter Hoekstra
from Ajax, Dejan Curovic from Vitesse and Edwin van der Looi from
Stuttgarter Kickers. Despite missing the first 2 of their new acquisitions
they had no problems with the home team in the 1st half.
Viscaal and Den Turk missed chances for De Graafschap. Hugo headed in the first
goal 20 seconds into the 2nd half and, although the home team tried to get
into the match, once Leonardo scored a 2nd in the 70th the match was
effectively over. Groningen went on the rampage in the closing stages of
the match to add 2 more (Hugo's 2nd and one for Broerse) but by then a
large section of the crowd had already left the ground. |
| Groningen
and RKC share the points |
03 Dec 2000
|
| The
result was a goalless draw - a fitting score at the end of such an
anesthetic match. Groningen missed 9(!) players - Hugo, Curovic and
Hoekstra to begin with! They were even forced to put a couple of juniors
on the bench, one of whom, Arjan Robben, impressed with his play. Another
'highlight'of the match was the appearance of the Dutch Father Christmas -
Sinterklaas - and his assistant Zwarte Piet (Black Peter not Blue Peter)
on pitch, they were quickly dismissed. Waalwijk were ok for the first
quarter of an hour but then sank like the proverbial pudding, looking
nothing like the team that had troubled Ajax earlier in the week. Groningen went home
happy with their performance under adversity, knowing they are now above De
Graafschap in the table. RKC Waalwijk could have made it into 6th but
remain 7th. |
| Twente
in 3 - 0 victory over Groningen |
26 Nov 2000
|
| Twente
needed their points to keep themselves afloat in the middle of the table.
Groningen wanted a win to stay clear of the relegation zone - only having
12 points from their last 13 games. Unfortunately they created few
attacking moves in the 1st half - one was when Curovic shot over the bar.
In the 2nd half they had more men in front of Twente's goal but Broerse,
Leonardo and Hoekstra all failed to put one away. Twente's goalie Sander
Boschker was voted man of the match. If it hadn't been for his skills the
scoreline would have told a different story. Trainer Rutten decided to
reward some "Tukkers" (Twente players) for hard work in training
by giving them some action. The substitutions proved a good move -Thijs
Houwing scored in the 78th from Erik ten Hag's freekick and 10 minutes
later Chris de Witte ( substituting for Boudewijn Pahlplatz) scored a 2nd
for the home team. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (fresh from his
international debut) scored the 3rd in the last minute. Rutten was
satisfied after the match but well aware that he had much to thank his man
of the match Boschker for! |
| Icelander
Hardarsson to come to Groningen |
21 Nov 2000
|
| After
training with Groningen last month the Icelandic midfielder Johannes
Hardarsson has decided to join the club next season on a contract for 3
years. He has played for IA Akranes in (on?) Iceland for the last 6
seasons. |
| Vitesse
FC Groningen 2 - 2 |
12 Nov 2000
|
| Vitesse
are back at the top of the table despite only drawing with Groningen.
Feyenoord's first defeat of the season has flipped them back into
the no.1 spot. They were faced by a defensive Groningen who had only 2 men
up front - Hoekstra and top scorer Drent. Vitesse had some opportunities
to go ahead in an attractive 1st 45 minutes but it were the visitors who
scored twice in rapid succession - Martin Drent in the 30th and
Kurt Elshot 3 minutes later. In the 2nd half Vitesse came back quickly through
goals by Victor Sikora in the 49th and Matthew Amoah in the 56th. As the
match wore on the home side improved continually and the last 15 minutes
were dangerous ones for Groningen as Vitesse piled on the pressure -
Sikora, Amoah, Peters, Van der Brom and Fortes all had a chance to put one
away. Groningen's no.2 goalie Egbert Darwinkel put in a great performance
to help Groningen to their draw. |
| AZ
beat Groningen with 10 men 1 - 2 |
05 Nov 2000
|
| AZ
can be happy with their first away win of the
season. Jamal Dabi put them ahead in the 8th minute. Groningen fought
back and were rewarded when their top scorer Drent put one away just
before half time. In the 2nd half they were unable to profit from AZ being reduced to 10
men after Peter Wijker got his 2nd yellow card in the 47th
minute. AZ pulled everyone back and hoped to score from a counter attack.
They didn't have to wait long - Dries Boussata's brilliant run setting up
Jan Kromkamp with a chance he coolly put past the keeper. |
| Peter
Hoekstra on loan in Groningen |
03 Nov 2000
|
| The
Ajax forward Peter Hoekstra has been lent to Groningen for the rest of the
season. There is no place in the 1st team for him in Amsterdam at the
moment and Groningen are happy with his performance in training. He makes
his debut in Sunday's match against AZ. |
| Peter
Hoekstra trains with Groningen |
01 Nov 2000
|
| Ajax's
Peter Hoekstra will be training with FC Groningen this coming Wednesday
and Thursday to see if he impresses the technical staff there. If they
like what they see he may be hired out to Groningen for the rest of the
season. The ex-PSV player with 5 international caps to his name has lost
his place in the current first team squad in Amsterdam. |
| Groningen
in revenge 4 - 0 against Fortuna |
22 Oct 2000
|
| The
team from the north got their own back on Fortuna Sittard for their defeat
in the Dutch FA Cup when the score was reversed. Early on Dejan Curovic
struck several shots which demanded the best from Fortuna's goalie Ruud
Hesp. Leonardo got ther for FC Groningen in the 30th minute - the
opponent's defence allowing him the space to hit the ball into the left
hand corner of the net. Fortuna looked lacklustre and hungover after their
victory over Groningen last Thursday. Weak in defence, sloppy and wasteful
up front, only the midfield seemed in order. Sittard 's Coach Henk Duut
undoubtedly had a thing or two to say to his team at halftime. Maybe
Groningen overheard his peptalk because Curovic scored within 10 seconds
of the whistle going for the beginning of the 2nd half. During the next 15
minutes Groningen took some pace off their game and Fortuna were allowed
more possession and chances to score - without result. Groningen scored
again in the 64th minute when Hugo, in a solo run, sent in a missile from
10 meters. Curovic added insult to injury with his team's 4th and his 2nd
in the 67th to seal Fortuna's fate. |
| Groningen
win away at Roosendaal 2 - 0 |
17 Sep 2000
|
| Groningen
beat their old rivals RBC Roosendaal 2- 0 in a match which contrasted how
well Groningen have adapted to life in the Dutch Division One compared
with the team who gained promotion alongside them at the end of last
season. Elshot's run down the right led to a pass which was put away
by Brunswijk in the 7th minute. It took 30 minutes before RBC got a real
chance at goal via a free kick which hit the defensive wall. The second
halfd fiercely enough with RBC pressing for a goal but it was
Groningen who got their second from the penalty spot after substitue
Maximiano was floored, Van Dijk putting the ball past RBC's goalie in the
60th minute., |
