League final 2003 in the Kuip? |
12 July 2001
|
| The
Rotterdam Kuip stadium (home to Feyenoord) has applied to UEFA to host the
final of the Champions League in 2003 with the full backing of the City
Council and the KNVB. The last time it hosted a European final was the
European Cup 1 final in 1982 when Aston Villa beat FC Bayern München 1 -
0. |
| Pierre
van Hooijdonk signs for Feyenoord |
11 July 2001
|
| After
recently being dumped by Benfica, Pierre van Hooijdonk has signed a
contract for two years, including an option for a third, with Feyenoord.
The Dutch international is happy to be returning to Holland after
a season full of off-pitch wrangling with Benfica over money due him from
his transfer from Vitesse last year and bonusses still owed him by the
Portugese side. His agent Rob Jansen has been dealing with the loose
ends of the transfer in Lisabon during the last few days and P-Air will be
reporting for duty at the Kuip, and the obligatory medical, before joining
the squad in training at Doorwerth. Despite being regarded by many
here in Holland, and abroad, as a striker who can't quite be reckoned as a
real topper, P-Air has scored 238 goals in 382 matches for RBC, NAC,
Celtic, Nottingham Forest, Vitesse and Benfica (he's scored 16 goals in 30
games for them). As an international he's more than proved his worth for
Oranje with 9 goals in 24 matches, and in 23 he appeared only as a
substitute! It seems as if Feyenoord have a real goal scoring machine for
the first time since the legendary Ove Kindvall. He has a reputation for
not bowing to authority - he went on strike at Nottingham Forest before
moving to Vitesse and is said to be unpopular with Oranje coach Louis van
Gaal due to an 'irreverent' attitude (he's well known for pranks, jokes
and 'blowing raspberries' at authority). |
| Feyenoord
win friendly |
11 July 2001
|
| The
pre-season friendlies are in full swing and all Premier Division sides won
their matches:Feyenoord beat Alphense
Boys 0 - 10 including goals by Elmander,
De Visser (3), Leonardo, Korneev and Tininho.

| Dudek
reports for duty at the Kuip |
10 July 2001
|
| The
goalie who was 'jilted at the altar of contracts', Jurek Dudek, has
returned from his holiday in Poland and reported back for duty with
Feyenoord. Arsenal and Feyenoord are still supposed to be holding talks to
clear up the bad feelings left after the messy transfer negotiations
(which should have led to Dudek's departure for "The Gunners")
finally ground to a halt when the London club bought Richard Wright from
Ipswich. Some kind of financial compensation may be on offer (and is
expected by the Rotterdammers) to heal the wounds! |
| Bosvelt
injured again |
10 July 2001
|
| It's
just not Feyenoord's Paul Bosvelt year as far as injury is concerned - he
was elbowed in the face, resulting in a broken cheekbone, in an aerial
clash with Ferry de Haan during training. He'll be out of action for at
least a month after already missing
the end of last season with a foot injury! |
| David
Connolly signs for Wimbledon? |
07 July 2001
|
| Feyenoord
refuse new TV deal |
07 July 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have made it clear that they are unhappy with the terms of the recent
agreement made with Dutch public broadcaster the "NOS" and
satellite TV company Canal Plus for the rights to show matches and
highlights next season. The Rotterdammers have always been of the opinion
that they have the right to negotiate as a club for any broadcast rights
before the Ere Divisie NV takes over as representative of all the clubs in
Holland's Premier Division. The wrangling over this thorny topic looks as
if it will continue to drag on - Canal Plus have made it clear that
there is still an existing contract for one more season with the Ere
Divisie clubs and the NOS want to know precisely what Feyenoord's
objections are so that discussions can begin a.s.a.p. |
| Shinji
Ono signs for Feyenoord |
06 July 2001
|
| The
Japanese international Shinji Ono has been given permission by his current
club Urawa Red Diamonds to sign for Feyenoord after both clubs agreed
terms yesterday. The 21 year-old (already nicknamed Yoko by his new
teammates) had already agreed
personal terms with his new club (a deal for 5 years) and only has to
pass the obligatory medical before starting work. The midfielder was on
the shopping list of several clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia
Dortmund and even Ajax. He flies in from Japan on July 24th to be
presented to the Kuip fans at the club'sDay on the following day. |
| Dudek
move to Arsenal definitely off |
06 July 2001
|
| Jurek
Dudek will not be moving to Arsenal now that "The Gunners" have
gone ahead with the signing of Ipswich Town's Richard Wright. Feyenoord
chairman Jorien van der Herik is not amused by the London club's behaviour
- after the Londoners had agreed terms with Dudek weeks ago (without
asking permission) they've kept the Rotterdammers in suspense, claiming
that the fee asked was too high. We reported
earlier that there were supposed to be talks next week to discuss the
impasse but that seems now to have been disinformation. The appointment
was supposedly to talk about a possible signing of Australian Brett
Emerton (we
reported earlier that he was rumoured to have signed for Leeds United
but it's obviously untrue - don't you get tired of all the disinformation
in the press?!). He's not for sale though and Arsenal seem to have used up
all their goodwill at Feyenoord with all the shenanigans of recent weeks. |

|
| Feyenoord
and Excelsior exchange keepers |
04 July 2001
|
| Feyenoord
and their sister club Excelsior have engaged in a bit of keeper swapping -
Cor Varkevisser moves from the Kuip to Woudenstein stadium and Ronald
Graafland moves in the opposite direction. 19 year-old Varkevisser was
no.3 choice after Jurek Dudek and Zbigniew Malkowski (and ready for the
next step up the goalkeeping ladder) while Graafland was supposed to take
over as no.1 goalie for Excelsior but, plagued by injury last season, was
unable to replace 1st choice Carlo l'Ami and is now in need of regaining
match rhythm. |
| Pierre
van Hooijdonk talks to Feyenoord? |
04 July 2001
|
| The
Dutch daily newspaper "Algemeen Dagblad" has reported that talks
between Pierre van Hooijdonk and Feyenoord are in an advanced stage and
could lead to a contract for several years. Benfica are in financial
problems and would like to sell the striker - he'd been offered to
Galasatary in part exchange for Jardel earlier this season. The former
RBC, NAC, Celtic, Nottingham Forest, Vitesse and Benfica player is well
known for his goal scoring abilities with 238 goals in 382 matches. |
| Connolly
and Feyenoord part |
04 July 2001
|
| David
Connolly and Feyenoord are to go their seperate ways after negotiations
over a new contract failed to deliver a result both parties could live
with. The Rotterdammers think the Irish international's wage demands and
have tired of comments made by the striker in the press. Plus the
possible arrival of P-Air van Hooijdonk might have something to do with
it!? |
| Connolly
renews contract negotiations |
01 July 2001
|
| The
Irish international striker David Connolly has re-d negotiations with
his club Feyenoord (his contract ran out at the beginning of June) to see
if they can't agree terms on a new contract. He'd turned down an earlier
offer in Rotterdam before looking elsewhere -
a planned move to AZ ended unsuccessfully in a disagreement over wages.
The 24 year-old was for several seasons the highest paid player in Holland
but will now have to accept a less lucrative contract if he's to continue
playing in Rotterdam. |
| Brett
Emerton signs for Leeds United?? |
30 June 2001
|
| The
Feyenoord and Australian international Brett Emerton has been making a
really confident and positive impression lately, scoring 3 goals in his
country's last two qualifying matches for the World Cup in Korea. The
English newspaper "The Daily Mirror" is reporting that the 21
year-old has been snapped up by English Premier League side Leeds United
for €10 million Euros, beating rivals Liverpool who had seen their offer
of €8 million Euros turned down. |
| Dudek
transfer to Arsenal off? |
21 June 2001
|
| The
transfer of Feyenoord's Polish international goalkeeper Jurek Dudek to
Arsenal looks to have failed as the clubs have not been able to agree on
the price. The Rotterdammers wanted €16,39 million Euros but
"The Gunners" were unwilling to meet the price and the London
club have now offered Ipswich Town €7,94 for their goalie Richard
Wright. Whether or not a new bid will be made by another club remains to
be seen - Barcelona were linked to the Feyenoord goalie earlier this
year, so who knows? |
| NEC
sign Feyenoord's Jarda Simr |
16 June 2001
|
| NEC
have signed Feyenoord's Jarda Simr on a contract for 4 years. The 22
year-old attacking midfielder has been on loan to satellite club Excelsior
last season where he made a good impression (scoring 18 goals in total). |
| Pieter
Collen signs for Feyenoord |
16 June 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have added wing-back Pieter Collen to their squad to strengthen their
defensive backline. The 21 year-old came to play in Holland in 1999 from
AA Gent but didn't make enough of an impression at Vitesse to get a
regular 1st team place. He was first lent, and later sold, to NEC where
things went better for him (he scored twice in 42 matches) and has signed
for 5 years with the Rotterdammers where he'll compete with Christian Gyan
for a place in the team. |
| Feyenoord
to sign Japanese star Shinji Ono |
12 June 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have agreed personal terms with the star of the Japanese national team,
Shinji Ono, and signed a contract for 4 years with an option for a 5th. The
21 year-old midfielder had been on trial with the club earlier this year
but the Rotterdammers neglected at the time to snap him up. His market
value has been boosted by his performance during the recent Confederation
Cup and the Rotterdammers will undoubtedly have to dig deeper into their
pockets to secure his services. All that remains now is for Feyenoord and
Urawa Red Diamonds to decide what that price will be!! |
| Feyenoord
to sign Roda's Van Haaren |
07 June 2001
|
| Feyenoord
and Roda have agreed terms regarding the transfer of defender Ramon van
Haaren. The 28 year-old has yet to agree his personal terms with the
Rotterdammers and will have to compete with Tomasz Rzasa and Tininho for
the left back position. |
| David
Connolly hasn't signed for AZ!!! |
31 May 2001
|
| We
seem to have misled you, our viewing public, with the story we ran earlier
this week that Feyenoord's David Connolly has signed a deal for 5 years
with AZ. It seems that this was a nice piece of misinformation (we won't
tell you who we got the original story from so as not to embarass them -
but it was a Dutch language site) because we've now read that Connolly is
still trying to pressure the Rotterdammers into improving the offer they
made. If they don't, the Irish international could well be looking to move
back to England. |
| Feyenoord
target Sander Boschker |
30 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have officially informed Twente that they are interested in buying
goalkeeper Sander Boschker, the star of their Cup Final victory against
PSV. The 30 year-old is seen as the replacement for Jurek Dudek if/when he
leaves for Aresenal this summer. He has played for "The Tukkers"
all his career, making his debut in 26th November 1989 against HFC
Haarlem. |

|
| Kalou
signs new Feyenoord contract |
26 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have finally offered Bonaventure Kalou an improved contract that he can
live with. The club and the player have been in conflict for some time now
- it's said the Ivory Coast player was on an embarassingly low wage. The
recent interest being shown by other clubs in the talented winger has
motivated the Rotterdammers to offer him a 'decent' deal. The 23 year-old
former ASEC Mimosa player joined the club in 1997, made his debut against
Heerenveen on March 1st 1998 and has scored 23 goals in 93 appearances. |
| Feyenoord
offer David Connolly new contract |
25 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have reacted quickly to the
offer made by AZ to the Irish international David Connolly to play for
the Alkmaarders for the coming 5 years. The Rotterdammers have offered the
striker the choice between a contract for 2 or one for 3 years. |
| English
clubs target Brett Emerton |
25 May 2001
|
| Several
English clubs are targeting Feyenoord's Brett Emerton. The Rotterdammers
bought the Australian international last summer for €1,64 million
Euros from Sydney Olympic and would prefer to hang on to the young
midfielder. However, in recent weeks the likes of Leeds, Middlesbrough,
Blackburn and Ipswich have all been following him. It also seems that
Liverpool have just had a bid of €8,2 million Euros turned down but
Feyenoord could well accept €9,83 million Euros if a new bid is made
this summer. |
| Dudek
deal in the balance |
24 May 2001
|
| The
deal between Arsenal and Jurek Dudek hangs in the balance now that it's
becoming clear that the London club are unwilling to part with the
€16,39 million Euros that Feyenoord are asking for the Polish
international. It looks as though this deal could fail in the same fashion
as the transfer of Glasgow Rangers' Giovanni van Bronckhorst to Chelsea
did. |
| AZ
want David Connolly |
24 May 2001
|
| AZ
are showing a lot of interest in Feyenoord's Irish international striker
David Connolly. They're not the only club who'd like to snap him up when
his contract runs out this summer - two other Ere Divisie sides as well as
a foreign club have made inquiries about the 23 year-old. He joined the
Rotterdammers in 1997 from Watford Town (scoring twice in 10 games) but
didn't live up to expectations. After a dispute with Leo Beenhakker he was
hired out to Wolverhampton Wanderers and then given a place at Feyenoord's
satellite club Excelsior. He scored lots of goals for the Toto Division
side (42 in 48 games) and so was recalled by Bert van Marwijk (scoring 5
goals in 14 appearances since his return to the Kuip). |
| Arsenal
and Dudek in agreement |
23 May 2001
|
| The
huge amount of publicity created by the story that Feyenoord's Polish
international goalie
Jurek Dudek was having talks with Arsenal today has ended with the signing
of an agreement by the 28 year-old to sign for 5 years with
the London club. Now it's up to the clubs to agree on a price !
The news comes on the evening of David Seaman's
testimonial match at Highbury. Dudek joined Feyenoord in 1996 from Polish
side Sokól Tychy and was reserve goalie until Ed de Gooey went to Chelsea
in 1997. He made his debut against MVV on August 21st 1997 and won the
Championship with them in 1998/99. |
| Feyenoord
in the hunt for new striker |
23 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have arranged to talk to a Twente delegation and Jan Vennegoor of
Hesselink after the Amstel FA Cup Final this coming Thursday. The tall
striker comes with a price tag of €11,34 million Euros and is still top
of Bert van Marwijk's shopping list but, if those talks fail, Ajax's Nikos
Machlas is also a possible target. |
| Ajax
and Feyenoord target young Swede |
21 May 2001
|
| Ajax
and Feyenoord are following closely the exploits of young Swedish player
Alexander Fernarud but are competing for his attentions with Manchester
United. The 17 year-old plays for Landskrona BolS and excels both in
attack as well as in midfield. |
| Dudek
talks to Arsenal |
21 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have given goalie Jurek Dudek permission to travel to London tomorrow for
talks with Arsenal. There have been lots of rumours recently that the
Polish international was on the shopping list of several clubs (including
Barcelona as well as the "Gunners") but so far this is the first
official approach made to the Rotterdammers for 'his hands'. If he goes
then 26 year-old Hungarian Gábor Babos could well be the replacement -
he's having a great first season at NAC and last Saturday Feyenoord made
an official inquiry about his availability. |
| Feyenoord
miss Kalou and Emerton |
17 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
will be missing Bonaventure Kalou and Brett Emerton when they lineup
against Utrecht on Sunday. The Ivory Coast striker has been called up by
his country for a World Cup qualifier against Tunesia while the Australian
is sitting out a suspension. |
| RKC
let Samardzic go |
15 May 2001
|
| RKC
are not going to make use of the option to buy Radoslav Samardzic
from Feyenoord. The 31 year-old Yugoslavian moved from Heerenveen to
Rotterdam in 1999 but didn't even get to play once for the 1st team in
the Kuip last season and was hired out to the
Waalwijkers. He's made 14
appearances for them but has failed to impress and hasn't scored a goal. |
| Feyenoord
win goalfilled derby 3 - 4 at Ajax |
13 May 2001
|
| The
match of the weekend and the 45th Premier Division derby between
Rotterdam's and Amsterdam's finest as the two sides battle for 2nd place
in the table with automatic Champions League qualification at stake. So
attacking football is what it's all about this afternoon and the fans
(who'd chosen football above the beach on this first-taste-of-summer
weekend) were treated to some early excitement and a match full of goals.
Feyenoord's trainer chose to strengthen his defence (to make sure today
would not end in yet another defeat) by fielding Jan de Visser on the left
instead of Leonardo and was hoping to score from counters. Bert van
Marwijk's strategy paid off early on - after Christian Chivu hit the crossbar with a header Kalou served
up a clever through ball which gave Feyenoord's Irish international David Connolly
the chance tothe proceedings with
a 7th minute goal. It wasn't long before Ajax's Georgian international striker Shota
Arveladze showed he was also in the mood this afternoon, sneaking one in within 5
minutes and adding a 2nd goal with a beautifully struck distance-shot in the 18th minute. Although
Ajax completely dominated the first half-an-hour of play (looking really
strong) - as the match went on they lost their way, especially after
the break. After the break Ajax lost the initiative to their
opponents - the substitution of Leonardo for De Visser brought
back the attacking Feyenoord style-of-old. A move which looked
suspiciously offside gave the Brazilian the chance to make good for his
recent poor form with a 61st minute equalizer, showing up the
season-long achilles heel of the Amsterdammers - their weak defence. Irishman Connolly put the visitors ahead in the
66th and, as Ajax fought for the equalizer it gave the Rotterdammers even
more chance to attack that wobbly backline. Ajax threw so many men forward
that 3 Rotterdammers were free to bear down on goalie Grim - Jon Dahl Tommasson
had no problem getting around the hapless Grim to add a 4th for the Rotterdammers in the 73rd.
Shota Arveladze collected his hattrick in the 84th as it looked as if Ajax
might pull level. In the closing minutes substitute Rafael van der
Vaart twice came close to scoring but the luck wasn't there today and the
team of the first half was a pale shadow of what we had seen before the
break. Feyenoord are jubilant with the victory (for the first time in 14 years in
Amsterdam) and the points. They keep that vital 2nd
place with their first convincing performance in weeks. |
| Feyenoord
talk to Vennegoor of Hesselink |
12 May 2001
|
| FC
Twente have given Feyenoord the official go-ahead to talk terms with Jan Vennegoor
of Hesselink. He's one of the strikers on trainer Bert van Marwijk's
wanted list but it could cost the Rotterdammers €9,08 million Euros to
buy the striker (who has scored 15 goals this season). |
| Christian
Gyan misses Feyenoord - Ajax |
12 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
will be without the injured Ghanian defender Christian Gyan for their
match against Ajax tomorrow (he's picked up an ankle injury in training) -
the latest bit of bad news for the Rotterdammers. They already miss the
injured Paul Bosvelt and Igor Kornejev plus the suspended Ebi Smolarek and
Tomasz Rzasa for the important clash. After all the problems of the
last couple of months trainer Bert van Marwijk must be wondering if they
are suffering from a jinx. |
| Jean-Paul
van Gastel ready for Ajax |
11 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
are relieved to see the return to 1st team action this Sunday of Jean-Paul
van Gastel when they travel to the Amsterdam Arena for the clash
with Ajax. It's a crunch match for both teams - Feyenoord desperately need
a win after their string of defeats and, if they lose, they will hand over
the all-important 2nd position in the Ere Divisie (with its promise of
automatic qualification for Champions League football next season) to the
Amsterdammers. So the re-emergence of the midfielder after almost a year
of injury comes as a more than welcome shot-in-the-arm for the
Rotterdammers. |
| Feyenoord
to buy De Kuip? |
10 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have been wanting to buy their stadium "De Kuip" for some time -
the costs of renting it are becoming too expensive. The problem so far has
been that the major shareholder, SC Feyenoord (the amateur wing of the
club), wanted too much money - €13.5 million Euros. It is becoming
increasingly urgent for the Rotterdammers to generate more income, while
cutting costs, if they are to continue to be able to compete in the future
with Holland's other big boys Ajax and PSV, and ownership of the stadium
would create more money-earning possibilities. SC Feyenoord are now
willing to discuss an amicable solution as long as there is an upfront
guarantee that the stadium will never fall into the hands of creditors if
the club ever go bankrupt. |
| Feyenoord
join Premier Racing project |
10 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have decided to take part in the new Premier Racing Grand Prix's - as we
wrote earlier this season, the idea for the new races comes from
Englishman Collin Sullivan (owner of the Silverstone circuit in
England. Other clubs who are seriously considering taking part are
Manchester United, AC Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid while other Dutch
clubs, such as Ajax, PSV and Vitesse, who've been invited to join the club
are still thinking about it. |
| Feyenoord
join the race for Vennegoor |
09 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have told Twente that they would like to buy Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.
They join the queue of clubs waiting to do business with the
most-wanted-striker in Holland - PSV made an official approach last
week , Ajax's Co Adriaanse made it known last month that he'd like to
add the 22 year-old to his squad while there are also foreign
clubs waiting in the wings. |
| Feyenoord's
Korneev misses clash with Ajax |
08 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
will be without Russian international striker Igor Korneev on Sunday when
they travel to the Amsterdam Arena - he's torn a leg muscle. Ferry
de Haan could well be fit again in time for the all-important clash while
Bonaventure Kalou is still doubtful and has dropped out of training with a
groin strain. The match could determine whether one of the teams
automatically earns a place in the Champions League next season. The
Rotterdammers are struggling to get through the rest of the season without
losing any more points (and any more face) - they are currently hanging on
in 2nd but only because of the 5 point lead they had built up over PSV
before the winter-break. They have lost 8 matches since the restart and
are looking increasingly fragile on and off pitch as star-players put in
new wage demands which threaten to break up the squad. |
| Feyenoord
lose to happy Fortuna 2 - 3 |
06 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
are slowly losing their grip on 2nd place and needed to convincingly
outperform the Sittardians this afternoon. The Rotterdammers have had
their fair share of personnel problems (Leonardo's been
dropped, Kalou's half-fit and unhappy, Bosvelt's out for the rest of the
season) and sorely needed a confidence booster. Fortuna are in
16th place and need the points to clear the relegation zone - they went
ahead after a quarter of an hour with a 16th minute goal by Ronald
Hamming, Jochem van der Hoeven made it 0 - 2 in the 41st. Feyenoord's
attack had no sting today and their defence started to show the cracks as
well. Despite various 2nd half substitutions it began to look like the
Rotterdammers were going to get their 5th defeat in the last 6 matches.
The substitution of Korneev for Kalou brought hope - he drew them level with two goals in 5 minutes in the 77th and 81st but
it was a short-lived revival. Joost
Volmer clinched the very welcome points for Fortuna in the 84th leaving
Feyenoord clutching their latest headache. |
| Van
Marwijk drops Leonardo |
05 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord
trainer Bert Marwijk has lost patience with Brazilian star Leonardo and
has dropped him for tomorrow's match with Fortuna. Since he made his
return after the "passport affair" the left-winger has not shown
anything like the form which made him a pre-Christmas favourite and seems
to have developed a motivation problem. |
| Paul
Bosvelt leaves hospital |
03 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
Paul Bosvelt has left hospital after being treated
for the blocked arteries above his right ankle which have put
him out of action for the rest of this season. He needs several more weeks
of rest and recuperation during which he can train but will not be able to
play any matches. All the best Paul! |
| Kalou
back in training |
02 May 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
star striker Bonaventure Kalou is back in training after missing a few
matches due to an ankle problem - the unhappy
Ivorian may be ready to play against Fortuna
this coming Sunday. |
| Dudek
gives Roda 1 - 0 victory over Feyenoord |
29 Apr 2001
|
| An
own goal by unhappy-man-of-the-match Jurek Dudek in the 62nd minute gave
Roda a valuable 3 points in their hunt for European football while the
Rotterdammers are a pale shadow of their former pre-winter break selves.
Without Kalou, injured, and with an out of sorts Leonardo they have no
wings and when added to that their midfield engine Paul Bosvelt is also
missing then the heart's gone out of the side. They traditionally have a
rough ride in Kerkrade and today was no exception. The 'own goal' came
when a Regilio Vrede shot bounced off the post only to rebound off Dudek's
back into goal. Roda close the gap with Feyenoord to 4 points while Ajax
are a point behind them in 4th but with a game in hand. |
| Patrick
Pauuwe extends Feyenoord contract |
29 Apr 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
Patrick Pauuwe has extended his contract with the club for an extra year
till 2004. The 25 year-old midfielder is pleased with the improved deal
and feels it's deserving recognition of the fact that he's grown into a
key figure in the side. |
| Feyenoord
and dissident duo settle differences |
28 Apr 2001
|
| Feyenoord
and the dissident duo Jurek Dudek and Jan Dahl Tomasson have settled their
long-running dispute (it's been going on for two years) regarding the
manner in which the two are paid bonusses. Both players wanted them
paid before tax, a common policy at other clubs, while Feyenoord said that
from 1997 it has been club policy to divide all bonusses equally between
all the players (and presumably after tax had been deducted). A settlement
has been reached where the club donates a certain sum of money to
charities chosen by the players while they refrain from their claim for
back-payment of the bonusses. |
| Steve
Laybutt returns to Feyenoord |
25 Apr 2001
|
| Australian
defender Steve Laybutt has returned to Feyenoord after being on loan to
RBC. He's been unable to play through injury, and he's unlikely to during
the rest of the season, so there was no point in leaving him at
bottom-of-the-table Roosendaal where preparations are under way for next
season's inevitable Toto football. |
| Last
season for Kalou at Feyenoord? |
25 Apr 2001
|
| It
looks increasingly as though Feyenoord will be missing some top players
next season now that Bonaventure Kalou has stated his disappointment at
the club's latest offer to renew his contract. Quoted in the Dutch daily
Algemeen Dagblad the Ivory Coast international has said that the
difference between what he's been offered and what he's asking for is so
great that further negotiations are a waste of time. He added that Jurek
Dudek (on the point of leaving for Barcelona) is equally disappointed in
the club's unwillingness to hold on to some of its key players. After all
their problems of the last few months it looks as though the
Rotterdammers' troubles are not over yet! |
| Paul
Bosvelt leaves intensive care - misses rest of season |
24 Apr 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
Paul Bosvelt has been released from intensive care, where he spent much of
last week after it was discovered that he had two blood clots in his leg
(one in the shin and the other just above his ankle). It is expected that
he will leave hospital shortly (probably the middle of next week) but will
miss the rest of the season. |
| Dudek
move to Barcelona on? |
23 Apr 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
Polish international goalie Jurek Dudek has hinted that he could well be
moving south to Barcelona at the end of this season. He was a guest on
Poland's 'Big Brother' television programme yesterday and, when asked
about his rumoured departure, said that he was giving it serious thought.
His name has been linked to the Spanish club before and Chelsea's Ed de
Goey and Willem II's Geert de Vlieger have been named as possible
replacements. |
| Feyenoord
win against NEC 3 - 0 |
21 Apr 2001
|
| The
Rotterdammers really needed a good win to break the run of disappointing
performances they've had of late, especially now that Ajax, Roda and RKC
are all creeping steadily closer. NEC are sitting in 11th place and have
also lost their shine since their early-part-of-the-season
successes. Jon Dahl Tomasson was in the mood and his goals in the
11th and 18th minutes were just what the doctor ordered. Ebi Smolarek
added a 3rd in the 83rd - the 3 points will
keep them clear of Ajax in 3rd place (whose match against Vitesse was
postponed). Feyenoord seem to have regained some confidence but have
still got a couple of tough matches to play (Ajax and Roda) and NEC's
trainer Johan Nesskens was more than a little disappointed that his team
put on such a poor show. |
| Enforced
rest for Feyenoord's Kalou |
20 Apr 2001
|
| After
the bad news about Paul Bosvelt it turns out that Bonaventure Kalou is
also going to have to take it easy for a while. He's been suffering from a
niggling ankle injury since he played for the Ivory Coast a few weeks ago
which has left him less than match-fit. If he doesn't give it a chance to
heal properly the problem will only get worse. |
| Bosvelt
misses rest of season |
20 Apr 2001
|
| The
latest blow for Feyenoord is that Paul Bosvelt will be out of action for
the rest of the season - the cause of the numb feeling in his foot is a
pinched nerve. It's the last thing the Rotterdammers need with crucial
matches coming up - determining the final table rankings and who goes into
Europe next season. |
| Paul
Bosvelt has mysterious injury |
16 Apr 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
international defender Paul Bosvelt has a mysterious, and as yet
undiagnosed, problem with his foot. His toes turn a disturbing shade of
white without any discernible reason - tomorrow he's going to be examined
again to see if the medical world can come up with an answer!? |
| Danish
talent signs for Feyenoord |

plays for Farum and has been regularly called up for the Danish Under 18s
squad. |
| De
Graafschap beat Feyenoord 1 - 2 |
15 Apr 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have been struggling to regain the confident form they radiated before the
winter break - they've been distracted by the "Leonardo affair", handicapped by
injuries and this was their 3rd defeat in a row. De Graafschap are relegation zone strugglers
and badly needed to win after Sparta leapfrogged them yesterday after their
victory over RBC. Dennis den Turk got them off to a promising start with
an 8th minute goal. Feyenoord were unable to reply and in the 72nd minute Zico Tumba
put away a header, only 4 minutes after appearing as substitute, to clinch
the points. Johan Elmander got a consolation goal for the
Rotterdammers in the 81st. |
| Thomas
Buffel extends Feyenoord contract |
13 Apr 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
20 year-old midfielder Thomas Buffel has extended his contract with the
Rotterdammers for another 3 years. He came to Holland in 1999 from Cercle
Brugge, where he was regarded as showing much promise, and is currently on
loan to satellite side Excelsior but will return to the Kuip next season. |
| Return
to Feyenoord for Ed de Goey? |
13 Apr 2001
|
| The
English tabloid newspapers are speculating that Chelsea's Dutch goalie Ed
de Goey will be returning to his old club Feyenoord in the summer when
Polish international Jurek Dudek is said to be leaving. De Goey started
with Sparta ), played 7 years for the Rotterdammers before
moving to the London club in 1997 but has been on the bench since
December. |
| Feyenoord
knew about Leonardo's false passport |
11 Apr 2001
|
| According
to Aldo Rebelo, head of Brazil's parliamentary commitee investigating the
"illegal trade in footballers", Feyenoord knew full well that
their young star Leonardo's passport was false. The club have said that
they thought the passport had come from one of the young Brazilian's
family while Mr. Rebelo says there was undoubtedly a deal between the club
and the player's business agent, snackbar owner Hans Coret. Mr.Coret will
soon appear in court to face charges of supplying a false passport. See
our earlier stories on the affair!!! |
| NAC
win narrowly against Feyenoord 1 - 0 |
08 Apr 2001
|
| NAC
got off to a fine start with an Earnest Stewart goal in the first minute
but had Sérgio Pacheco sent off 5 minutes later. They managed to hold on
to their slim advantage despite playing most of the match with 10 men and
denied Feyenoord the points they badly needed to catch up with PSV who won
at Ajax and have now increased their lead to 10 points over the Ere
Divisie no.2s. The Rotterdammers have no excuses left for their poor
performances since the winter break. Leonardo and Kalou are back upfront
and the returned-from-injury Bosvelt and Pauuwe were 'online' but the team
miss the cohesion and confidence they showed so well earlier this season.
They made little impression on their opponents today who will be
celebrating their first victory over the Rotterdammers since 1979. Bert
van Marwijk will be wondering what he has to do or say to get his side
back into gear. The title is more or less impossible for them now but at least they remain 6 points ahead of 3rd placed
Ajax. |
| Feyenoord
to lose Kalou, Tomasson and Dudek? |
06 Apr 2001
|
| Connolly
determined to remain Feyenoorder |
02 Apr 2001
|
| Irish
international David Connolly has restated his determination to stay with
Feyenoord. His contract runs out in the summer but, even if there was an
English club interested, he would prefer to stay in Holland. He's worked
his way into the 1st team and wants to be given a chance to show what he
has to offer next season. |
| De
Vlieger to replace Dudek if he goes? |
30 Mar 2001
|
| Willem
II's goalie Geert de Vlieger could be bound for Feyenoord if the club sell
star-keeper Dudek this summer. The Belgian is a product of the famous
Beveren school for goalkeepers and moved to Anderlecht as a junior where
his rivalry with Filip de Wilde began. He took over as no.1 keeper when De
Wilde went to Sporting Lisbon but was rudely removed when his rival
returned to the club. He went on loan to Harelbeke, returned to replace
the injured De Wilde, and even turned down a move to Newcastle before the
final straw, what else, De Wilde's return from injury prompted him to make
the move to Willem II where he's been a happy man. The rivalry is over now
that De Wilde has retired and De Vlieger has also replaced him as
Belgian's choice at national level. Whether Dudek actually goes and this
all goes through we'll have to wait and see, certainly he's making waves
at Feyenoord with his (and Tomasson's) legal fight over
bonusses. |

|
| Feyenoord's
Connolly in Irish team |
24 Mar 2001
|
| David
Connolly will be in the Irish team to play against Cyprus today. His last
appearance for Ireland was against Holland last September and, now that
Niall Quinn is out injured, he'll be forming an attacking duo with Robbie
Keane. |
| Feyenoord
go solo in TV rights negotiations |
21 Mar 2001
|
| Feyenoord
are tired of waiting for the organisation representing Ere Divisie clubs
(the ENV) to sort out the new broadcasting
contracts with public broadcaster the NOS and commercial TV station
SBS6. Existing contracts run out at the end of this season and ENV
shareholders (the clubs themselves) are supposed to make the final
decision as to who gets to show Ere Divisie highlights next season at a
meeting on April 7th. The Rotterdammers' solo negotiations will
undoubtedly come as a blow to already damaged feelings of solidarity in
the Dutch Premier League. |
| Van
der Herik appears before tribunal |
20 Mar 2001
|
| Feyenoord
chairman Jorien van der Herik has appeared before a tribunal looking
into the conflict between the club and two of its players - Jurek Dudek
and Jon Dahl Tomasson. The conflict concerns the club's bonus system -
taxes are first deducted before the money is paid out, which is a
disadvantage to foreign players who are able to keep much more of their
bonus if they are paid before tax deductions are made. The
tribunal could take up to 6 weeks to make its decision. |
| Feyenoord
too strong for Twente 5 - 1 |
18 Mar 2001
|
| Bert
van Marwijk must have been a happy man - finally being able to call on the
services of his favourite widemen Leonardo and Kalou this afternoon. The
home team were inspired by the reacquaintance, Leonardo causing all kinds
of problems down the left. Substituting Erik ten Hag for El Brazi helped a
bit to curb the Brazilian's advances but it wasn't what you'd call a total
success. Although Scott
Booth boosted the visitors into the lead in the 3rd minute, Kalou
snatched it away a minute later. Paul Bosvelt scored from a penalty in the
15th to give Feyenoord the lead. David Connolly converted a Jon Dahl
Tomasson pass for a 3rd in the 64th and the Dane got his own, the 4th a minute later.
Ebi Smolarek got the 5th in the
78th. |
| Leonardo
to play on Sunday - Kalou still injured |
17 Mar 2001
|
| Leonardo
will play his first Ere Divisie match since December 10th's against Ajax
in the Kuip on Sunday against Twente. He's arrived back from Brazil, after
getting his travel papers sorted out, and has been able to take part in
training. Unfortunately for trainer Bert van Marwijk Bonaventure Kalou
will be missing - he's still suffering from an ankle injury picked
up in Ivory Coast's World Cup qualifier against the Congo. |
| Feyenoord
and Middlesborough forge links |
17 Mar 2001
|
| Rotterdam's
Feyenoord and Middlesborough Town FC have expressed a desire to forge
links during a visit by businessmen from the Dutch megaport to Teeside.
Club pennants were exchanged while businessmen and club representatives
talked of the possibilities of closer cooperation. |
| Feyenoord
offers youthful talent contract |
17 Mar 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have offered one of its up and coming youth players, 16 year-old Ferne
Yue-Tin-Chung, a contract for 2 years. The club's youth academy is
flourishing with players such as Chung, Steve Olfers, Cor Varkevisser,
Said Boutahar and Civard Sprockel about to join the senior squad. |
| Heerenveen in
Semi-final after 4 - 2 win against Feyenoord |
14 Mar 2001
|
| A
feisty start to this replay of the Amstel Cup quarter final match
(abandoned in February due to fog). Heerenveen were dangerous down the
wings, and especially from corners, while Feyenoord were quick to counter,
both teams in the mood for attacking football. Anthony Lurling got ther in the 7th minute and Jon Dahl Tomasson answered it in the 14th. A
defensive error by Heerenveen gave Paul Bosvelt the opportunity to make it
1 - 2 for the Feyenoorders in the 29th but Marcus Allbäck scored his
first FA Cup goal to even things up once more. Anthony Lurling got his
second in injury time, totally unmarked after a defensive error by the
Rotterdammers - just how it should be - good old fashioned reckless
Cup football with plenty of goals. The 2nd half promised to be a cracker!
Heerenveen came out firing on all cylinders, really putting the
Rotterdammers under pressure and the crowd were really getting behind them
- an early shot by Jenssen was turned away by Dudek. The game was
committed, at times hard but never ugly and was everything a Cup duel
should be. Jenssen and Allbäck
impressed the most for Heerenveen and, after a period of deadlocked play,
it was only fitting that Jenssen should get a 4th for the Frieslanders to
guarantee them a place in the Semi-final against PSV in the 87th minute.
The remaining added time entertainment was full of little explosions - out
of the blue Feyenoord got a 3rd and late fight-to-the-last breath goal for
a perfect end. Great match, great cup football. My compliments! |
| Feyenoordnew season against West Ham |
14 Mar 2001
|
| Feyenoord
are to kick off their new season with a friendly against West Ham United
on July 29th. They will also take part in the Gran Canaria tournament on
Maspalomas during the winter break. |
| Kalou
missing against Heerenveen |
13 Mar 2001
|
| Feyenoord
will have to miss Bonaventure Kalou in tomorrow's Amstel Cup quarter final
against Heerenveen. The striker was expected to make his reappearance for
Feyenoord after serving out his match suspension but has been injured in
Ivory Coast's World Cup qualifier against the Democratic Republic of
Congo. Leonardo will definitely miss the match as well - he's still stuck
in Brazil. |
| Connolly
called up for Ireland |
13 Mar 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
David Connolly has been called up by national coach Mick McCarthy for the
Irish squad in their World Cup qualifiers against Cyprus and Andorra
(March 24th and 28th). |
| Leonardo
misses Amstel Cup on Wednesday |
12 Mar 2001
|
| It
looks as though Feyenoord will miss Leonardo on Wednesday in the replay of
the Amstel Cup quarter final match against Heerenveen, abandoned due to
fog last month. He's still stuck in Brazil without a valid travel document
and, even if he's back in Rotterdam by Wednesday, he will not be match
fit! Good news for his team is that Kalou and Bosvelt will both be
available after the end of their suspensions. |
| Willem
II beat Feyenoord 3 - 1 |
11 Mar 2001
|
| Feyenoord
are still without Kalou and Leonardo (the former sitting out his
suspension and the latter still barred from playing because he's in
Brazil waiting for a valid travel I.D. - expected on Tuesday). The
decision to put in left back Jan de Visser against the fleet Ceesay proved
to be crucial - after Mariano Bombarda hadd the score
for the home team with a shock goal in the 2nd minute it was Jattoo Ceesay
who got
the 2nd in the 19th minute. Willem II (playing their 900th Ere Divisie
duel) outclassed the Rotterdammers today but neglected to convert enough
of their chances so that when Kees van Wonderen got one back in the 75th
things could have gone wrong for them. Instead
Denny Landzaat put the result beyond doubt with a 90th minute 3rd goal.
Feyenoord are now 4 points behind PSV with 10 matches left. |
| Leonardo
not quite legal yet |
11 Mar 2001
|
| Leonardo
is still not legally able to turn out for Feyenoord. He's been granted a
residence and work permit but is still without a valid I.D. (proof of
identity). So he'll be missing against Willem II this afternoon and will
have to wait until the home match against Twnte to make his reappearance. |
| Leonardo
can play again |
07 Mar 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
Leonardo can play again now that he's been given residence and work
permits by the IND ('Immigratie en Naturalisatie Dienst'). It
finally closes an unpleasant chapter in his career in Holland - he's been
unable to play for the Rotterdammers since it was discovered his passport
wasn't in order. It's expected he'll be fielded against Willem II on
Sunday - he's currently in Brazil trying to obtain exemption from military
service and is expected back at the club this Friday. |
| Former
Feyenoord boss Brox dies, aged 82 |
07 Mar 2001
|
| Guus
Brox, former Feyenoord manager, has died at the age of 82. He became a
club member in 1933, joined the management staff in 1948 and took over as
administrator in 1959. He was the club's first manager between 1964 and
1978 - successful years for the Rotterdammers, both at home and abroad. |
| Kornejev
extends contract for 1 year |
06 Mar 2001
|
| Igor
Kornejev, Feyenoord's former Barcelona and Heerenveen striker, has
signed a new contract for 1 year with the club. The 33 year-old
Russian has played 64 matches and scored 17 goals since 1997 for the
Rotterdammers and would have liked a contract for a longer period
but is happy to be able to play another season at the club. |
| Vitesse
and Feyenoord in 0 - 0 deadlock |
04 Mar 2001
|
| Feyenoord
failed to profit from PSV's draw against Roda yesterday and are 4 points
adrift of the leaders. Both of today's
teams are experiencing form problems at the moment and are trying to
recover the momentum lost since the season restarted - Feyenoord missing
suspended Kalou, injured Kornejev and Van Wonderen, while Vitesse
haven't won a match since December 13th and trainer
Ronald Koeman is still trying to find a player combination that will groove. The
visitors' Jon Dahl Tomasson came close to scoring after 10 minutes, picking up Patrick
Pauuwe's pass, his ball passed goalie Edwin Zoetebier only to be cleared
off the line by Ruud Knol. After a nervous first half hour Vitesse started
to fight back - Mbamba missed early in the 2nd half, and Bob Peeters and Gert Claessens came close but lacked accuracy. The match remained tense as both teams probed
for those oh-so-vital top-of-the-table points - David Connolly 'scored'
early in the 2nd half but had it dissallowed and Vitesse had a Sikora goal
dissallowed in the 70th minute for an earlier infringement. It stayed 0 - 0. Vitesse climb
from yesterday's 6th place into 4th position, nosing ahead of RKC and Roda
in 6th and 5th places. |
| David
Connolly fights for Feyenoord place |
27 Feb 2001
|
| Irish
international David Connolly is determined to fight for a regular 1st team
place despite the stiff competition from the likes of Jon Dahl Tomasson
and Igor Korneev up front. The 24 year-old striker made a great impression
when he returned to the club (scoring in his first game) after 18 months
at its smaller Toto brother Excelsior (where he'd been both club and
division top scorer) but he has since been left out of the team after
making only 3 appearances. He knows that a lack of 1st team experience
could damage his international career in the long term but is still
determined to remain at the club. |
| PSV
stay top after 1 - 2 away win at Feyenoord |
25 Feb 2001
|
| PSV
go home with their first win in the Kuip since May 19th 1986, confirming
their top of the table ranking, even if the victory wasn't a particularly
resounding one. Feyenoord dominated the 1st half, Bosvelt
and Pauuwe controlling the midfield with Korneev falling back and
acting as feeder of the
ball. His work gave Pauuwe, Jon Dahl Tomasson and Ebe Smolarek earlyngs which weren't pounced on (Kalou and Leonardo were missed today in
terms of upfront sting). So André Ooijer's early 6th minute goal for the
visitors came out of nowhere, blasted in from 25 meters, out of reach of
Dudek's hands. Korneev stayed in the dressing room with a hamstring
problem at halftime which broke up the Rotterdammers' rhythm in the 2nd half, allowing
PSV more opportunities to break. Which they did - the ball going from Mateja
Kezman via Lucius and Bouma to John de Jong who made sure of the 3 points in the 74th.
Patrick Pauuwe got a late consolation goal from a freekick for the
Rotterdammers in the 87th minute 1 - 2. Today's was their first home
defeat in 12 matches. |
| Feyenoord
fined for fielding Leonardo |
24 Feb 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have agreed to pay a fine of €22,690 Euros for ignoring a warning by
Dutch immigration officials and fielding Leonardo in the match against
Ajax on December 10th. The club could not have not known earlier that the
Brazilian's passport was false and so won't be subject to prosecution but
letting him play against the Amsterdammers was done when they knew the
document was false. Leonardo himself has already accepted an out of court
settlement of €2,270 Euros and 40 hours community work for his
'misdemeanour'. |
| Leonardo
accepts his mild punishment |
16 Feb 2001
|
| Leonardo
has been 'sentenced' to €2,270 Euros and 40 hours community work
for his false Portugese passport. His legal
representative, Mr. van Eijck, said that to wait for a decision by a
juvenile court could take 2 to 3 months and such a wait would have a
negative effect on his development as player. The 17 year-old will
hopefully get a work permit now within the next 2 to 3 weeks. |

- Feyenoord Cup match 14th March |
16 Feb 2001
|
| The
Amstel Cup match between Heerenveen and Feyenoord, suspended when mist
made play impossible, will be replayed on March 14th. Although 24 minutes
play had elapsed the teams will play the whole 90 minutes. |

- Feyenoord cup match stopped by mist |
15 Feb 2001
|
| The
Amstel Cup quarter final between Heerenveen and Feyenoord was stopped
after 24 minutes play beacuse of the lack of visibility resulting from
thick mist. Fans of both teams chanted that they wanted to see football
and went home disappointed. |
| Feyenoord
in injury crisis |
13 Feb 2001
|
| League
leaders Feyenoord are in the middle of an injury crisis - Tomasz Rzasa is
the latest in a string of players to go on the injured list and the left
back cannot easily be replaced as his reserve Tininho is also out of
action. The club already miss Christian Gyan, Paul Bosvelt and Patrick
Pauuwe, Leonardo can't play until his work permit is sorted out (his
namesake the club have bought from Groningen won't arrive until the summer
as the northerners plan to make use of him for the rest of the season),
Bonaventure Kalou is facing a 4 match ban for his recent red card, unless
the club's appeal is successful, and to make matters worse goalie Dudek
has bruised his toe and may miss Wednesday's cup match against
Heerenveen. |
| Feyenoord
back on top after 1 - 0 against Groningen |
11 Feb 2001
|
| Lucky
Feyenoord got away with the points tonight thanks to an own goal by
Groningen's Melchior Schoenmakers. The first half saw Groningen living in
hope of an upset or at least the away draw, Curovic missing with a header
by a mile the possibler for them early in the 1st half. Feyenoord
looked rather dull, Jan-Dahl Tomasson having the best shot but hitting the
post. Bert Marwijk obviously had something to say at half-time because the
Rotterdammers came out firing on all cylinders and unleashed a string of
attacks. Poor finishing, bad luck and inability to grab the opportunites
when they came prevented any goals. It took Schoenmakers own goal to
clinch 3 points for Feyenoord allowing them to leapfrog PSV, who'd gone to
the no.1 spot after their 3 - 0 win against AZ yesterday, and put them
back on top. |
| Kalou
gets four match ban |
09 Feb 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
Bonaventure Kalou has been handed down a four match ban for his red card
in theng minute of the match against Heerenveen. The 23 year-old
striker has until 4 o'clock this afternoon to appeal if he wants to take
part in the match against Groningen. |

Gastel wants money from publisher |
09 Feb 2001
|
| The
Feyenoord player Jean-Paul van Gastel is sueing the publisher Jan
Scheffers for unauthorised use of his portrait on the cover of a book
"The Feyenoord Feeling" with stories by Hugo Camps and
Herman Kuipho. The photo shows Van Gastel with the Champions Cup in his
hands and, although the parties have tried to reach a settlement, the
Feyenoorder is now demanding €22,000 Euros via the courts. |
|
Feyenoord win 3 - 0 at AZ |
04 Feb 2001
|
| Feyenoord
are thankfull Kalou's still around, though we still have
to wait to see what 'sentence' he'll be handed down for last
Wedneday's red card against Heerenveen, because today he was their man of
the match scoring twice and having a hand in the 3rd. Hed the proceedings in the 33rd minute on a pitch which was terrible,
"irresponsible" said Feyenoord's trainer Bert Van Marwijk and,
although the home side had plenty of possession they couldn't penetrate
Feyenoord's defence. As the game drew to what looked like a 1-0 win two
goals in quick succession from Jan-Dahl Tomasson and Kalou's 2nd put the
final score beyond doubt. |
| RKC
hire Samardzic |
02 Feb 2001
|
| The
30 year-old Yugoslavian striker Radoslav Samardzic is on hire to RKC
Waalwijk for the rest of the season with an option to buy if things go
well. He made the move from Heerenveen to Feyenoord at the beginning of
last season but didn't settle in. |
| Heerenveen win
against Feyenoord 1 - 0 |
31 Jan 2001
|
| In
a misty Abe Lenstra stadium Bonaventure
Kalou got sent off in the 2nd minute for lashing out at Anthony Lurling,
forcing Feyenoord to battle on with
only 10 men. They already started the match without the heart of their
midfield - Paul Bosvelt and Patrick Paauwe. Heerenveen missed Gerárd de
Nooijer and Harris Huizingh. Foppe de Haan has seen his team suffer the
consequences of their European adventure in the Champions League - a
string of injured players giving him no opportunity to field his best
eleven. The extra man didn't help the Frieslanders, early chances for
Nurmela and Hansma apart, Feyenoord's defence coping well with the attacks
that came their way. The 2nd half gave every indication that the match
would end in a draw, Feyenoord content to contain Heerenveen, Krstev's
agile over-the-bar shot being the only test Jurek Dudek had to face. He
had little to do in goal and neither did Hans
Vonk at the other end. Just when it looked absolutely certain to be a
goalless match Dennis de Nooijer scored the only goal from a smart one-two
with Anthony Lurling in the 90th minute to
give Heerenveen the points, 13th place and the feeling that they can climb
even further up the table if they keep on improving during
the 2nd half of the season. Feyenoord will now be wondering, after their
poor performance against NAC, whether the Championship title is as secure
as it looked before Christmas. |
| Feyenoord
buy second Leonardo |
29 Jan 2001
|
| Leonardo
dos Santos Silva will be moving from Groningen to Rotterdam at the
end of this season. The 24 year-old Brazilian has been playing for the
northerners, where he shares midfield duties with Hugo, since leaving
Flamengo in 1997. His new contract with Feyenoord is for 3 years. |

beat spirited NAC 2 - 0 |
28 Jan 2001
|
| Feyenoord
had to work hard to contain a spirited NAC but Bonaventura Kalou proved
what a valuable asset he is to the club with a goal in the 83rd. He
should have been helping the Ivory Coast in their World Cup qualifier
against Madagascar but, when a coup threatened earlier this month, just
before a meeting with Sudan, he fled the country and hasn't gone back
since. The Rotterdammers were glad he was here today, he had a part to
play in many attacking moves. The 2nd goal came from Jon Dahl Tomasson,
sliding in a rebound off NAC's excellent Gábor Babos, for the 2-0.
Feyenoord are now 5 points clear of PSV after their 10th home win while
NAC have never had an away win in the Kuip. |

2-1 quarter final escape for Feyenoord |
26 Jan 2001
|
| The
Rotterdammers have a lot to thank goalie Jurek Dudek for after their lucky
win against NEC. The home side played the better football during most of
the match but were denied the rewards for their efforts by Dudek and the
woodwork. Theyd the score in the 5th minute through Dennis Schulp
but Bonaventura Kalou equalized 3 minutes later. Hristov missed a penalty
in the 15th for NEC with a poorly taken spot-shot that gave Dudek no
problems. Feyenoord were unable to capitalise on the chances that came
their way and their ever so slight superiority in the remainder of the 1st
half. Even though NEC had control of the 2nd half they were unable to get
the ball past Feyenoord's keeper and even the crossbar got in the way
twice. Kalou got the match winner in the 80th minute to end NEC's hopes of
a quarter final place and Feyenoord are lucky to find themselves facing
the winner of tonight's Heerenveen - VVV match. |
| Feyenoord
tell Samardzic he can go |
24 Jan 2001
|
| Feyenoord
have told striker Radoslav Samardzic he can leave - there are various
clubs rumoured to be interested in signing the temperamental player. He
refused to play for the Rotterdammers' B-team earlier in the season
leading to disciplinary action being taken. He has since made good but has
not played for the club's 1st team since. Apparently the fact that he
still has a contract till 2003 to be bought off has discouraged other
clubs from snapping him up. |
| Feyenoord
face legal action over Leonardo |
24 Jan 2001
|
| The
sting in the tail of the false passport affair troubling Feyenoord is that
two of their UEFA Cup opponents are considering lodging claims for
damages. Dunaferr and FC Basle were both beaten by a Feyenoord side that
included Leonardo, the young Brazilian with the false Portugese document.
There is no possibility of the results of the matches being overturned but
the clubs may well present the Rotterdam club with a bill for
compensation. |
| Kalou's
back 'safe and sound' in Holland |
18 Jan 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
striker Bonaventura Kalou has turned up safe and sound in Holland after
having to flee his homeland, the Ivory Coast, when a coup threatened. The
23 year-old was preparing with the national squad for a World Cup
qualifier against the Sudan (subsequently cancelled) when things heated up
and he decided to get out of the country pronto. On arrival he's gone into
hospital with a high fever - small wonder! |
| Leonardo
'found' and arrives in Portugal |
17 Jan 2001
|
| The
lost Feyenoorder Leonardo has arrived in Portugal to join the club's
training camp. He was having problems in Brazil with his passport and
obtaining exemption from national service - but everything is 'ok' now
and he's back in the Feyenoord fold. The Portugese didn't have any
objections either to him entering the country, even though he'd been
using a false Portugese passport, so maybe his luck's changing. |
| Michel
Valke Feyenoord's new youth trainer |
17 Jan 2001
|
| The
'once only' former Dutch international Michel Valke is to be Feyenoord's
new youth trainer. The 41 year-old former Sparta, PSV and Feyenoord player
was in charge of Dordrecht '90's youth 'academy' and is the successor to
Ricordo Moniz in Rotterdam. |
| Feyenoord
contract for Excelsior's Civard Sprockel |
16 Jan 2001
|
| Up
and coming midfield star Civard Sprockel has signed up with Feyenoord for
6 years. The 17 year-old has done well at satellite club Excelsior in
Rotterdam and is making the move across town in a career move which he
hopes will see him make enough of an impression that he will be chosen for
the Dutch national squad 'Oranje' in time for the World Cup in 2006. |
| Carlos
Alberto leaves Feyenoord for Lierse |
15 Jan 2001
|
| The
Brazilian defender 22 year-old Carlos Alberto is to leave Rotterdam for
Lierse in Belgium's Jupiler league. He has made a good impression on trial
and is expected to join the club if he passes the obligatory medical.
After arriving in Rotterdam he made 16 appearances for Excelsior but none
for Feyenoord. |
| Leonardo
can play again in March - Kalou 'missing' |
15 Jan 2001
|
| Feyenoord
expect that it will take until Leonardo's 18th birthday in March before
they'll be able to field him again. Then he'll no longer be 'underage' and
can join in the action. At the moment the squad is waiting for his return
to their training camp in Portugal - he was having problems getting a
stamp in his 'legal' passport back home in Brazil and obtaining exemption
from national service. Kalou is also 'missing' after trying to leave his
homeland the Ivorycoast after rumours of a possible coup in the country. |
| Leonardo
joins Feyenoord this weekend |
12 Jan 2001
|
| The
young Brazilian with the false passport, Feyenoord's Leonardo, is having
problems at home too. He's experiencing some trouble getting a stamp in
his Brazilian passport and also has to apply for exemption from national
service with the Brazilian army before he can join the squad at their
training camp. He is nonetheless expected this weekend in Portugal for
training and that is all he'll be able to do for the time being until his
status has been sorted out in Holland. |
| Feyenoord
wait for Ono's return |
12 Jan 2001
|
| The
Japanese footballer Shinji Ono has been training with Feyenoord recently
but had to return to Japan for a wedding. The 21 year-old player from
Urawa Red Diamonds impressed coach Bert van Marwijk with his skills (he
scored in the club's friendly with amateurs VC Vlissingen - Feyenoord won
12-1) and he hopes to see him back at the club's training camp in
Portugal. |
| Emerton
stay at Feyenoord |
11 Jan 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
Australian defender Brett Emerton has no plans to leave the club, despite
the recent interest shown by Middlesborough's Terry Venables. Terry knows him
from the time he spent coaching the Australian squad and has been
following his developing career. Simon Konstantinidis, Emerton's business
agent, has stated that Brett currently wants to concentrate on his work
for Feyenoord but that his lifelong dream is definitely to play for an
English club in the future. |
| Feyenoord
beat Go Ahead Eagles 4 - 1 |
10 Jan 2001
|
| Feyenoord
were 2 - 0 up at halftime thanks to goals by Jon Dahl Tomasson and Peter
van Vossen (a penalty). David Connolly made it 3-0 early in the 2nd half,
Dick Kooijman got one back for the Eagles and Korneev made it 4-1, but
also missed a penalty in the closing minutes of the match. |
| KNVB Leonardo investigation |
10 Jan 2001
|
| Dutch
football's public prosecutor has started an investigation into the
Leonardo affair. Now that it's official that his Portugese passport is
false the Dutch FA will be looking at whether or not his conduct (playing
the first half of the season without a permit) has 'damaged' football's
good name here in Holland. The investigation will also be having a good
look at the circumstances surrounding the match against Ajax on December
10th and whether Feyenoord knew that the passport was false or not. If
they knew, then the FA could charge the club with misconduct leading
to a hearing and possible 'punishment'. |
| Leonardo's
passport confirmed false |
09 Jan 2001
|
| It's
official - Feyenoord's 17 year-old Brazilian import Leonardo's passport is
false. The club had been warned by Dutch immigration authorities that
there was something wrong with his papers and gave the advice not to field
him until things were clear. Now they are trying to arrange a work permit
for him as soon as possible so that he return to 'work'. |
| Somalia
on loan to Excelsior |
08 Jan 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
Brazilian striker Somalia is to be lent to satellite club Excelsior. He's
seen little 1st team action this season in the Kuip and since the arrival
of Irishman David Connolly and Swede Johan Elmander the outlook has got
worse. There was a possibility that he would go to Fortuna but the
language barrier (he speaks only Portugese) put an end to that. |
| Somalia
no use to Fortuna |
04 Jan 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
Brazilian forward Somalia is not going on loan to Fortuna
after all. The language barrier, he speaks only Portugese, proved to
be the deciding factor and he will now have to wait while Feyenoord look
for another home for him. |
| Dudek
stays in Holland |
03 Jan 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
Polish international goalie Jerzy Dudek has flatly denied all the recent
stories flying around that he is about to/or has already signed a contract
with Arsenal. He is rather upset with the stories which, he says, are
being spread by 'foreign agents' (sounds to my ears like espionage-
Shagadelic!) who like to stir up trouble (feeding the English Daily Mirror
the "exclusive"). His Dutch representative, Jan der Zeeuw, has
confirmed that Dudek is staying with Feyenoord, has no plans to move
(despite interest from other European clubs such as Barcelona) and is fed
up with the 'interference' caused by these rumours. |
| Feyenoord
stay top after beating Vitesse |
21 Dec 2000
|
| The
Rotterdammers remain unbeaten at home and top of the Premier division
after tonight's (rather undeserved) victory. During the last 18 years
whichever team has been division leaders at the halfway stage has ended up
winning the title. This must give Feyenoord hope of becoming champions,
although there are still question marks about their consistency of
performance. Tonight they were missing rather too many players for their
own good - Jon Dahl Tomasson, Ulrich van Gobbel, Steve Laybutt, Christian
Gyan and new star David Connolly were injured and Kees van Wonderen,
Patrick Pauuwe, Igor Kornejev and Paul Bosvelt were fielded but not fit.
The visitors also missed a player or two - they were without Didier
Martel, Louis Maros, Dejan Stefanovic and Patrick Pothuizen. Certainly Vitesse deserved better
than they got and showed all the signs of
securing a very useful away win in the Kuip. Only the goals, the goals,
where were they? They had the better of Feyenoord in the 1st half and good
chances to score to boot, only they wouldn't go in (Matthew Amoah had the
bestng but his header bounced off the underside of the bar onto the
pitch). Trainer Ronald Koeman was irritated that his team had not been
able to grab the opportunity before them. Especially theng goal by
Kalou, in the 72nd minute, was a sore point - receiving the ball, after a
nice one two with Kornejev, surrounded by Vitesse defenders but still
allowed to score through goalie Edwin Zoetebier's legs! Kalou rubbed it in
6 minutes later, passing to Bosvelt in the penalty area who was free to
blast it home for the match winner. Latest addition to the squad, Johan
Elmander was able to feel the turf of the Kuip for the last few
minutes of the game to a loud welcome from the fans. Bert van Marwijk was relieved to
escape defeat and add another 3 points to his collection. |
| Feyenoord
hires out Somalia to Fortuna |
20 Dec 2000
|
| The
23 year-old Brazilian striker Somalia is to be hired out for the rest of
the season to bottom of the table Fortuna (if they can get a work permit
for him). He was originally going back to his old club in Brazil, America
Belo Horizonte, but that fell through at the last minute. |
| Elmander
in action against Vitesse for Feyenoord |
19 Dec 2000
|
| The
young Swedish striker Johan Elmander, purchased from (no not Ikea)
Orgryte, will most likely make his debut for Feyenoord tomorrow. The
Rotterdammers have a lot of injured players at the moment and will have to
call up the new addition to the squad earlier than planned - he wasn't
expected to play before the New Year. |
| Groningen
surprise
Feyenoord 1 - 0 |
17 Dec 2000
|
| The
northerners more than held their own in the 1st half despite a list of
injured absentees. Drent and Curovic were missing upfront which gave 16
year old Arjen Robben the chance
to show his skills again, his Dec 3rd appearance against RKC being one of
the highlights of that game. Peter van Vossen was doing a good job of
replacing the passport-problem bedevilled Leonardo for Feyenoord - watch
Speaker's Corner for a story coming soon on this subject. In the second
half both teams seemed to grow more and more resigned to a gentlemanly
draw when Magnus Johansson surprised one and all with a terrific 30 metre
freekick which missiled its way to the back of the net. |
| Leonardo
still without work permit |
15 Dec 2000
|
| Feyenoord's
young Brazilian Leonardo remains without a work permit. The Dutch
immigration authorities have instructed the relevant department concerned
with work permits not to issue one until his papers are in order. His
Portugese passport seems to be false. A countryman of his, the midfielder
Edu, was refused entry to England after his transfer to Arsenal had gone
through for the same reason. It seems that this could be a problem facing
clubs more often in the future in the light of corruption in Brazilian
football. The Brazilian parliament is currently investigating the scam and
have invited (if that's the right word) 5 players to appear and give
evidence. |
| Connolly
scores as Feyenoord win 2 - 4 at Fortuna |
14 Dec 2000
|
| The
latest acquisition in Rotterdam, Irishman David Connolly (fresh from
Excelsior) proved he was worth his (by today's standards) unassuming fee.
Fortuna went ahead in the 7th minute, after making a confident start to
the match, no doubt invigorated by their first win of the season last
weekend. Jan van Halst's sneaky through ball to Rolf Landerl was hit
firmly by the Austrian but Dudek got his hands to it, couldn't hold onto
it and had to watch as Gerritsen slipped the spinning rebound away for ther. Only 4 minutes later Mr. Connolly (evidently not suffering any
first night nerves - in on every attacking move Feyenoord made either as a
provider of the ball or a hitter of it) was on hand to provide the
equalizer. The visitors were looking good even without Bosvelt, Kornejev
and Leonardo (sensibly left out in the light of the Dutch Ministry for
Internal Affairs' advice not to field him - he seems to be in possession
of a false Portugese passport, and not the only Brazilian player in Europe
with false 'papers'). In the 18th minute Feyenoord underlined their
superiority when Paauwe made it 1-2 with a great strike and Ebi Smolarek
made it 1-3 from a Connolly pass just before halftime. Fortuna kept on
fighting in the 2nd half and Landerl almost got one back but soon after it
was Feyenoord's Tomasson who made it 1-4. Fortuna's determination was
finally rewarded with their 2nd when Dennis Krijgsman scored in the 62nd
minute. Feyenoord look good for the title on this showing and will be well
pleased with David Connolly's performance - we look forward to seeing more
of the man in Premier action. |
| Paul
Bosvelt injured during clash with Ajax |
11 Dec 2000
|
| The
Feyenoorder Paul Bosvelt is going into hospital to have a scan made of his
knee. There is fluid inside, indicating a possible injury picked up during
Sunday's duel with Ajax. He is unlikely to see action in Wednesday's match
against Fortuna. |
| Feyenoord
overpowers weakened Ajax |
10 Dec 2000
|
| The
absence of Machlas, Chivu, Bergdřlmo and Ikedia proved crucial in Ajax's
defeat today. The first two are sick, the second pair are injured. Trainer
Co Adriaanse's reaction was to give his young players a go. The man
obviously likes a gamble and his limited ambitions for his side this
season allow him perhaps to take liberties that another trainer would not
dare. He left Witschge and Winter on the bench which gave Hersi his debut.
Passport-plagued Leonardo started for Feyenoord despite a ministerial
command to leave him out of the side (while the question of his status is
being been clarified). For Feyenoord's trainer Bert van Marwijk the
personnel problem was otherwise limited to the choice of injured Igor
Kornejev's replacement. 19 year-old Ebi Smolarek's inclusion proved to be
a smart move as he turned out to play a part in both Feyenoord's goals.
Feyenoord's superiority in terms of strength and experience was clear from
the start but it was Ajax who threatened to go ahead twice within the 1st
10 minutes - the first 'goal' by Van der Vaart was preceeded by a clear
case of handball by Hersi (nice try!) and the 2nd was a rebound off Van
der Vaart's (watch this boy!) shot that Wamberto netted only to be called
offside. After that it was the visitors who called the tune, Ajax losing
their way. Kees van Wonderen, Smolarek and Kalou all had a brace of
chances before Bosvelt's run and pass gave Kalou the opportunity to
finally slam one away in the 25th minute. Leonardo and Tomasson could each
have scored twice in a spell of Rotterdam domination. The last 10 1st half
minutes saw Ajax fight back but they were again unable to make any
impression on Dudek in goal. Instead it was Kalou who had an early chance
for his 2nd after the break, which actually came when Leonardo's unseen
"handball" allowed him to slip the ball to Pauuwe who gave Fred
Grim no chance whatsoever. Tomasson made it 3. The choice of Van der Meyde
as extra forward to replace central defender De Cler weakened the
Amsterdammers in defence but he made up by scoring the only Ajax goal.
Feyenoord remained dominant, apart from a couple of smallngs for
Arveladze and Van der Vaart, Bosvelt just goooing wide and Pauuwe
hitting wood for the visitors. The first win over Ajax since 1994 gives
Feyenoord a 4 points lead and 3 games in hand over their Amsterdam rivals.
The race for the title rests with the top three now while Adriaanse
remains concentrated on his stated goal of a place in the top five clubs. |
| Leonardo
in passport problem |
09 Dec 2000
|
| The
Feyenoord winger Leonardo's passport is under investigation. It seems that
his "Portugese" passport may turn out to be false. If so, he is
no longer eligible to work in Holland. Feyenoord have been instructed not
to field the Brazilian until his status has been confirmed. We'll see
tomorrow if Feyenoord will ignore this advice. |
| Korneev
misses Feyenoord's clash with Ajax |
09 Dec 2000
|
| The
Feyenoord midfielder Igor Kornejev will miss tomorrow's match against Ajax
after picking up an injury in training on Friday. He scored the only goal
in the Feyenoord - Ajax 2nd Eleven match on Thursday. It's unclear how
long he'll be out. |
| Connolly
returns to Feyenoord |
09 Dec 2000
|
| The
23 year-old Irish international striker David Connolly is set to return to
his old club Feyenoord. In 1997 he played for the Rotterdam club, but saw
little action, went to Wolverhampton Wanderers in England for a year, came
back to Feyenoord (where Leo Beenhakker couldn't use him), moved on to
satellite Excelsior (for whom he scored 42 goals) and is currently the
Toto Division's top scorer. |
| Barcelona
would like Dudek but can they afford him? |
06 Dec 2000
|
| Feyenoord's
27 year-old goalie Jurek Dudek is on Barcelona's wanted list now that
their own 2 first choices, Richard Dutruel and Francesc Arnau, are out of
action through injury. If Feyenoord were to let him go it wouldn't be for
less than €10 million Euros. It remains to be seen if the Catalans can
afford him. |
| Feyenoord
exit UEFA CUP 2 - 1 in Stuttgart |
05 Dec 2000
|
| The
Rotterdammers played a weak and nervous 1st half on a very poor looking
surface (Don't clubs look after their pitches nowadays? What happened to
the venerable craft of the groundsman/pitchmaster?). Korneev and Van
Wonderen began the match on the bench when their skills were definitely
needed on pitch. Maybe Bert van Marwijk didn't want to risk them with the
approaching Premier Division clash with getting-up-to-speed Ajax this
coming weekend in sight and mind? Feyenoord's midfield wasn't in gear and
they weren't finding their forwards - only Pauuwe looked really alert.
Defenders Gobbel and De Haan were made to work hard dealing with
Stuttgart'sng attacks(Sean Dundee looked especially threatening,
carving his way through Feyenoord's defence). Defender Meissner put
the home side ahead after 30 minutes. It took some dressing room
reprogramming (Korneev came on for Jochemsen) to give the Dutch visitors
some self belief and they played a better 2nd half. Even then it wasn't
until the first 15 2nd half minutes were gone that Feyenoord really
started to worry Stuttgart's defenders. Leonardo and Tomasson got chances
which they didn't cash in, Kalou had a long moment to equalise with his
head in the 60th minute but he didn't use it (his head or the chance), and
Soldo saw his shot narrowly saved by Stuttgart's young goalie Hildebrand.
The tempo went up and that made the football more interesting but, as the
passions rose, the yellow cards started to fly as risks were taken to
prevent a goal. After Kalou was brought down on the edge of the penalty
area, Pauuwe blasted in a freekick in the 75th minute which shot through a
gap in the German wall for a deserved equalizer. Dundee made a great run
for Stuttgart shortly after, which De Haan wasn't able to halt, and he hit
a terrific shot which Dudek could only push away. Korneev missed a golden
opportunity 5 minutes later with a weak slice at the ball inside the
penalty area. Just as it looked as though Feyenoord might save the day in
the dying seconds with relentless pressure at the German end Dudek had a
penalty awarded against him and he was powerless to stop veteran Balakov's
spot shot. Exit Feyenoord. |
| Feyenoord
ready to sign young Brazilian Alessandro |
01 Dec 2000
|
| Feyenoord
are ready to sign up the young Brazilian striker Alessandro who impressed
the club so much when he was on trial earlier this year. He currently
plays for the Rotterdam club's Brazilian satellite America. His stay was
cut short when his visa expired but Feyenoord's technical director Rob
Baan is flying out to close the deal this weekend. |
| Feyenoord
No.1 again after 2-1 against Sparta |
30 Nov 2000
|
| Feyenoord
didn't have to dig too deep to beat their Rotterdam neighbours tonight.
That was a good thing because they didn't have much to offer, looking
tired. They went ahead in the 5th minute after a pass meant for Tomasson
was put away for an own goal by poor, nervous
Yurtkan Kayis. Feyenoord had little else to show for their 1st half
efforts and it was Sparta who had the
best goal scoring opportunities - mainly through Elkhattabi, who missed with 2
shots. Why Sparta's new signing John Nieuwenburg was left out is a mystery
because his defensive skills were sorely missed. The situation in the 2nd half was
even weaker than the 1st - the match not living up to the expectations a
derby generates. After Tomasson had missed a couple of clear chances it
took until the last quarter of an hour before Pauuwe
scored Feyenoord's 2nd from Leonardo's quickly taken freekick. It was that
man Elkhattabi again who restored some honour for Sparta 3 minutes later.
He now has 12 goals to his name and shares top honours with AZ's Robin
Nelisse. |
| Emerton
wanted by Man United and unnamed Italians |
26 Nov 2000
|
| The
Australian international midfielder Brett Emerton is on the wanted list after his
recent performance against Scotland where he scored a marvellous goal.
Manchester United wanted him already last summer but he went to Feyenoord
instead - they were prepared to sign him without putting him on trial
first. Rotterdam won't want to see him go after just having signed him for
4 years. Still, United's interest and name will be tempting. |
| Tired
Feyenoord in 1 - 0 win over Willem II |
26 Nov 2000
|
| Tired
after their draw against Stuttgart earlier in the week Feyenoord
nonetheless went one up after 9 minutes thanks to Jon Dahl Tomasson.
Willem II weren't offering much resistance so more goals could have been
expected. They didn't arrive - Feyenoord choosing to adopt their
opponents' sleepy tempo. Changing gear proved impossible for the 2nd half,
Patrick Pauuwe having the best chances for the home side. Towards the end
of the 90 minutes Willem II had a goal disallowed because of Raymond
Victoria's foul in the move which gave Bombarda his 'goal', leaving
Feyenoord with the points to take them top of the table. |
| Stuttgart
prove a problem for Feyenoord 2 - 2 |
24 Nov 2000
|
| Feyenoord
started the match confidently and full of purpose but without Somalia, Van
Gastel, Gyan, Korneev and Van Wonderen. When the sides met two seasons ago
in the UEFA Cup Feyenoord gave away a 3-1 advantage, earned on German
soil, by losing 0-3 at home in the 2nd leg. Back to the present - in the 10th
minute Paul Bosvelt's pass found Jon Dahl Tomasson who made the finish
look simple. The Rotterdammers had more than their fair share of chances
to go further ahead - Bosvelt and Tininho's shots were tipped away by
goalie Hildebrand, Kalou set Tomasson up with the best opportunity after
20 minutes, all without success. After half an hour Stuttgart came into
the match and Dundee had a couple of close misses before finally getting
an equalizer in the 35th minute. The crowd in the Kuip were silenced but
soon had reason to cheer as Leonardo scored a vital psychological 2nd in
the dying seconds of the half. Feyenoord made tough going of the 2nd half,
not profitting at all from their pre-break booster. Although they had a
couple of chances (Van Vossen missed a great chance on the left, Tomasson
shot just wide, substitute Jochemsen had the best but his header hit the
bar) their play became disjointed, only occasionally did they look
threatening. VfB's substitution of Ganea for Lisztes injected new life
into the Germans - Dundee slipped Ganea the ball on the edge of the
penalty area and he surged forward to level the match for Stuttgart.
Feyenoord will be dissappointed. |
| NEC's
1st defeat of season 1 - 3 against Feyenoord |
20 Nov 2000
|
| NEC's
first defeat in 12 matches ended a week of centenary celebrations for the
club on a bum note. Feyenoord were simply too good for them and had the
match under control for most of the 90 minutes. Wisgerhof gave the
visitors a headstart with an own goal in the 24th minute. The 1st half saw
more defensive action than attacks until 21 year-old Australian Emerton
(bought from Sydney Olympic last Summer) curled a ball around NEC's keeper
Gentenaar in the 44th minute. He was Feyenoord's man of the match,
inspiring the team and scoring a 2nd goal at the end of an hour's play. He
picked up the ball on the halfway line, sliced through the NEC defence and
slammed it away to make it 0-3. NEC looked disillusioned until Peter
Wisgerhof made up for his 1st half mistake by getting a birthday goal for
himself in the 64th. This gave them some hope but Feyenoord's defence
remained rock solid for the rest of the match. |
| Bert
van Marwijk - Man of the People |
16 Nov 2000
|
| Born
May 19th 1952 in De Worp, a working class neighbourhood in the Dutch town
of Deventer. When Barry Hughes arrived at Go Ahead Eagles he spotted the
young talent and gave him a chance to shine in the first team
where he made his debut as 17 year-old. An old fashioned outside left with
plenty of technique, strong and agile, a good passer of the ball with goal
scoring ability - a real street footballer. Confident of his abilities he
quickly became a favourite with the fans. Everyone likes the man, has
respect for the way he handles himself, his down-to-earthness. It wasn't
long before the big clubs came to check him out - Feyenoord were ready
to sign him up as 18 year-old. Barry Hughes got to hear about the planned
visit to Rotterdam and camped out in front of his door to convince him to
stay with the Eagles. Hughes has had some cause to regret holding him back
- "Bertus"(as he is respectfully known) never made the move to a
top club as a player. It wasn't until 1975 that he finally left to join
AZ, a club that was to grow into a powerful footballing force thanks to the financial
support of the Molenaar Brothers and a tight knit team on the pitch. In
1976 'Bertus' got his first and only cap against Yugoslavia when Holland went
down 3-0. While at AZ he helped them to win the FA Cup but, unfortunately,
didn't get on with the new trainer Hans Kraay and missed sharing in the
club's glory years at the beginning of the 1980s when they won the league
championship and the UEFA Cup. He went to Limburg, MVV and a reunion with
Barry Hughes where he was one of the club's best players. Before ending his playing career at the age of
35 with lowly Belgium team Assent he spent a year with Fortuna Sittard.
His time in Sittard proved to be the impulse for
his new career - he helped out with the training during that season there as
player and got the call in 1997 to come back to the club as trainer
proper. His quite determination, perseverance and self-assuredness
(arrogance of the kind necessary to make it as trainer) helped the club
through the bad times as well as the good. Players improve under his
guidance and he believes in the importance of consistency of approach.
Able to move freely among his players, he lets them have their say while making
clear when they have gone too far in questioning or challenging his
authority. His move to Feyenoord has given a club with a reputation for
hard work the feeling that they have more to offer, can do better, can
acquire the self confidence needed to really achieve as individuals and as a
team. The raw ambition he lacked as a player has surfaced as coach and he
could go further, abroad to England perhaps or, who knows, even
Barcelona(?) as others have done. For the moment he is happy with his new
lease of life in Rotterdam and the satisfaction of the job he is doing
there. |
| PSV
close the gap with Feyenoord 1 - 0 |
12 Nov 2000
|
| The
Premier Division has risen in importance on the PSV list of priorities
since their exit from the Champions League last Wednesday. A duel with
table toppers Feyenoord at home was a welcome opportunity to restore any
wounded pride remaining and a chance to close the points gap with the
Rotterdammers. In the first 45 minutes the home team failed at this, being
uninspired - the best chances went to the visitors - after 11
minutes Jon Dahl Tomasson's attempt found Feyenoord goalie Ronald
Waterreus's hands. And that was more or less the highlight of the
1st half. PSV's forwards were sloppy and Feyenoord's weren't sharp. In the
2nd half PSV started to show some life. Mateja Kezman was brought down in
the 78th minute and Bruggink put away the penalty shot. Feyenoord were
unable to respond so close to the end of the match despite various
substitutions. PSV achieved at least in part what they started out to do -
on the evidence of their play today complete restoration of honour will
have to wait. |

veteran Paul Koolen dies |
12 Nov 2000
|
| The
Feyenoord veteran Paul Koolen has died at the age of 76. He was left back
for the club in the 1950's, playing alongside such names as Coen Moulijn,
Piet Steenbergen, Gerard Kerkum and Henk Schouten. A chronic knee injury
put an end to his playing career. |
| Leonardo
cleared of assault allegation |
12 Nov 2000
|
| The
Feyenoord striker Leonardo has been cleared by the Dutch FA (KNVB) of
striking his direct opponent Stijn Vreven with his fist during the match
against Utrecht on October 29th. After examining written statements and
video tapes it was decided that there was insufficient evidence to support
the allegation. |
| Feyenoord
beat Basle 1 - 0 in swimming pool |
10 Nov 2000
|
| The
heavensd and a cloud(or two)burst turned the Kuip into a swimming
pool before the match began - should it have gone on at all? Definitely not - the pitch was totally waterlogged and the ball kept
splashing to a halt in great puddles on the surface. Still, it helped
Feyenoord to go ahead when, in the 3rd minute, Basle-forward Oliver
Kreuzer passed back to his goalie (hadn't he noticed all that water?) and
saw the ball come to a halt in a puddle. Kalou was alert and lobbed the
ball over the keeper's head as the poor man left his goal line to try and
intercept. Feyenoord hung on to that lone goal and had a couple of chances
to score later in the match as did the Swiss. But this was not football as
we know it, rather an attempt to kick a ball around, keep it moving
on a completely sodden pitch. Perhaps they should have given the ball a
surfboard and the players swim suits! I won't waste too many more words on
such a scandalous sight. The match ended 1-0 and Feyenoord go on as the
only Dutch team remaining in Europe. |

hit Feyenoord meet Basle |
09 Nov 2000
|
| The
Rotterdammers miss Kees van Wonderen, Christian Gyan, Igor Korneev and
Jean-Paul van Gastel in their return match against Swiss team FC Basle.
They are all on the injured list and Patrick Paauwe is suspended. Although
Feyenoord won in Basle 2 - 1 and have the away goal advantage trainer Bert
van Marwijk warns his team that the Swiss are not to be
underestimated. |
| Feyenoord
sail through against Roda 4 - 2 |
05 Nov 2000
|
| A
hat-trick by Paul Bosvelt sealed Roda's defeat in a match where they had
insufficient firing power to counter Feyenoord's. The game really heated
up in the last 15 minutes of the 1st half when Bosvelt scored from a
penalty in the 31st minute and within 2 minutes had scored another.
Tininho scored an own goal to help Roda along a little but Bosvelt was on
hand in the 40th minute to give Feyenoord a 3 goal lead at half time. The
2nd half saw a much improved Roda, attacking, forcing a number of
corners but unable to create realngs. After coasting for most of the
half the home side came back to take control and Kalou scored from
Smolarek's pass in the 77th. At the last moment Roda managed to sneak in a
2nd for them courtesy of Ramon van Haaren from a corner. |
| Feyenoord
sweep aside RBC 5 - 1 |
03 Nov 2000
|
| Rotterdam's
finest, unbeaten in the last 7 games, celebrated in style by scoring more
goals than in any match so far this season and take their place at the top
of the table. Feyenoord 's trainer Bert van Marwijk had demanded a display
of strength and class for the full 90 minutes - he got it! After 12
minutes Jon Dahl Tomassond the score by steering Patrick
Paauwe's freekick past RBC's goalie Van Nieuwenhuizen. That woke RBC
up and their play began to improve but were unable to get any attacking
moves going. Instead it was Leonardo who served Gyan up with a pass in the
44th minute for an easy goal. The 2nd half started where the 1st left off,
Paul Bosvelt scoring with his head in the 47th minute after a pass
from Ferry de Haan. Christian Gyan celebrated his 22nd birthday by
blasting in his 2nd goal of the match in the 52nd and Paauwe made it 5-0
in the 56th. Hertog softened the blow a little for RBC in the 66th minute
but the evening was definitely Feyenoord's. Bert van Maarwijk saw it as
good preparation for next week's European match against FC Basle and RBC's
trainer Robert Maaskant was philosophical in defeat - the match against
Fortuna Sittard on Sunday being more important for them in terms of
Premier Division survival. |
| Utrecht
hold Feyenoord to a draw 1-1 |
29 Oct 2000
|
| The
unbeaten Feyenoord began without Korneev (injured against Basle) and Kees
van Wonderen (injured against Sparta). Utrecht had no such problems, Igor
(responsible for 4 goals in RBC's humiliation) Gluscevic in a lineup
unchanged except for Azebuike Oliseh replacing Patrick Zwaanswijk. Both
teams began in attacking mood and had chances to score. Utrecht through a
freekick which Dombi neglected to put away and Feyenoord through Kalou
whose threat was neutralised by Oliseh. The homeside had that bit more of
the action early on and Dombi put them ahead after zigzagging his way
through to strike an impressive shot into the right hand corner, eluding
the grasp of Jurek Dudek. Minutes later Leonardo broke down the right wing
for Feyenoord to provide Kalou with a header which was only kept out by
the athleticism of Utrecht's Harald Wapenaar in goal. This was the sign
for the visitors to turn on the heat. Leonardo was repeatedly threatening
and breaking through past Stijn Vreven and it was only a lack of accuracy
that stopped Feyenoord going ahead. Utrecht had the first chance in the
2nd half when Dave van den Bergh set up Gluscevic. It was, instead,
Feyenoord who got their equalizer when a long throw-in by Christian Gyan
was scrambled in by Kalou. Utrecht began to look unsure and shaky in
defence. Shortly afterwards Feyenoord had their best chance to score when
Leonardo's run and pass was headed by Gyan to Kalou who couldn't convert
it. Tom van Mol and Kalou had a last chance before the final whistle to
score for their teams but Van Mol's ball hit the post and Kalou's just
missed. |
| Feyenoord
convincing in win over Basle 1 - 2 |
26 Oct 2000
|
| Of the two
Dutch-Swiss derbies this was definitely the one to be at. Feyenoord looked
hungry and determined, were much more a team hard at work than Ajax
earlier in the evening and both they and Basle were a notch higher in
quality. Feyenoord had been warned by their trainer Bert van Marwijk
not to underestimate the Swiss and the
match got off to a cracking start with some high speed and high quality
football. Both teams let it be known they were in the mood. Early on it
was Basle who put the pressure on the Dutch and Tchouga had a couple of
good shots at goal. In the 17th
minute Feyenoord nearly scored twice when Pauuwe hit a great shot which
the Swiss keeper did well to deal with and almost immediately had to do
his best again to keep out Kanu's header. This was exciting and
entertaining stuff, certainly after watching Ajax-Lausanne. Feyenoord's
defence had their hands (feet?) full with containing the Swiss in the
later stages of the 1st half and performed well. The second half began in
a lower gear which gave both sides time to put together less frantic
attacking moves but also allowing interceptions/interventions more easily
because of the resulting time and space. Basle had a chance to score from
a free kick when George Koumantaraki was brought down by Van Gobbel but
Tchouga's free kick found Dudek's safe hands. In the 60th minute Kalou got
Feyenoord'sr which was almost immediately answered by Tchouga with a
goal for Basle in the 62nd. Although Korneev was replaced by Brett Emerton
in an attempt to get the deciding goal it was the Swiss who pushed the
Dutch back and Tchouga almost scored several times, including a terrific
low hit free kick which Dudek only just managed to keep out. Bosvelt
finally got the winner in the 87th minute to give Feyenoord a well
deserved victory agaoinst a tough opponent. |
| Feyenoord
in easy win over Heerenveen 2 - 0 |
21 Oct 2000
|
| Feyenoord
hardly broke out in a sweat in their win against Heerenveen. Leonardo
scored in the 18th minute and Korneev in the 53rd to assure them of
victory. So far Heerenveen are not showing anything like the form they had
last season when they ended up 2nd in the Premier Division.
Feyenoord were sharper, more skilled and physically stronger than their
opponents. After their early goal they sat back and allowed Heerenveen to
gain possession of the ball and attack goal but it wasn't enough help for
the team from Friesland. Feyenoord's new Brazilian player Leonardo treated
the Kuip fans to a demonstration of his talents and skills and, when his
finishing gets better, will undoubtedly score some great goals. The team
from Rotterdam haven't been in top form until now but next week's match
against PSV will reveal more of the true balance of footballing power in
the Dutch Prmier Division. |

get lucky win against Sparta 4 - 1 |
15 Oct 2000
|
| The
Rotterdam derby between small brother Sparta and big brother Feyenoord
ended with big brother getting 3 of their 4 goals in the last minutes of
the game. Sparta began well and were often the better team but missed that
last ounce of skill and alertness in finishing. Korneev was brought down
and scored from the penalty spot for Feyenoord in the 33rd minute, Marbus
levelling the score in the 40th. Bosvelt, Pauuw and Kalou scored in
the 85th, 88th and 90th minute to punish an undeserving Sparta. |
| Dunaferr
no problem for Feyenoord 3 - 1 |
28 Sep 2000
|
| The
Rotterdammers had no problems in beating the Hungarian team despite their
sloppy finishing. According to trainer Bert van Marwijk his team had at
least 10
chances to get one in and because they neglected to take a quick and
decisive lead in the first half with a 2 or 3 - 0 score, the
Hungarians were still able at times to pose a threat. For everyone else the
Dunaferr team looked really weak and only got two chances at goal in the entire
match. They can go home with the consolation that Feyenoord threw away so
many opportunities to score. De Haan scored the only goal of the first
half in the 17th minute and once the second goal came in the 47th minute
(Korneyev) the Hungarians more or less gave up hope and from then on it was
relatively plain sailing with a third goal coming in the 83rd minute (Van
Vossen). The Hungarians snatched one back courtesy of Tokkoli in the
88th minute. |
| Feyenoord
get free goal at Dunaferr 0 - 1 |
14 Sep 2000
|
| Feyenoord won
in Hungary last night courtesy of an own goal by Dunaferr's defence.
Although they had control of the match for most of the 90 minutes they
were in danger of repeating their mistake against Sturm Graz when they
gave away their one goal lead and ended up losing 2-1. In the last 15
minutes the Hungarian side threatened to profit from Feyenoord's lapses in
concentration but the Rotterdammers nevertheless clung on to their free
gift in away points. |
| Feyenoord
out of Champions' League |
24 Aug 2000
|
| Feyenoord
will have to revise their finances for this season now that they are
out of the Champions' League. The lost Euros will be going to Austrian side Sturm Graz
after their 1 -1 draw against the club from Rotterdam. Feyenoord's trainer
Bert van Marwijk, who seemed unconcerned after their away defeat two
weeks earlier, watched as his unimaginative team lost their way within minutes of
the kick off. Feyenoord's biggest problem at the moment would
seem to be its inability to score goals. Preceeding yesterday's match their
overrated star forward Julio Cruz signed to Italian side Bologna. If
Feyenoord still have any intention of achieving results this season it
might be a good idea to invest the 11 million Euros the sale has brought
them in one or two goal-getters. |
| Smardzic
back in Feyenoord squad. |
18 Aug 2000
|
| Radoslav
Smardzic has been forgiven by trainer Bert van Marwijk for his
rebelliousness. The 30 year old Yugoslavian who refused to play
with Feyenoords reserve team against Dutch amateur side Hilversum last
week, was allowed back in the squad after giving assurances that this
would not happen again. |
| Feyenoord
lose 2 - 1 to Sturm Graz. |
09 Aug 2000
|
| Two
unnecessary penalties resulting from defensive blunders could mean that
Feyenoord could soon be out of the Champions League competition. The
pressure is now on for them to win convincingly in the second leg at
home. Feyenoord started well, Korneev (stand-in for teammate Cruz)
scoring in the 5th minute, but seemed to lose their edge after that.
Korneev himself was never allowed another chance at goal, suffering a
series of vicious tackles. Cruz appeared later on and earned himself a
red card within 5 minutes which didn't exactly help! Sturm Graz
eventually scored the winning goal via the second of the match's two
penalties in the 92nd minute. Feyenoord's trainer Bert van Maarwijk
seemed reasonably satisfied with the team's performance saying, "We
played quite well really but we gave the ball away too easily and
allowed the opposition to exert too much pressure on the right
flank." As far as Cruz's dismissal was concerned he said it was
"very unprofessional". |
| Tough
security checks at Sturm Graz - Feyenoord |
04 Aug 2000
|
| The
1000 Feyenoord supporters expected at this Tuesday's Champions League
match between Sturm Graz and Feyenoord in Austria can expect tough
security checks. This is the first time in 18 months that Feyenoord fans
can travel to an away match in one of the European competitions with
their club's 'blessing'. All fans expecting to be able to enter the
Austrian side's Arnold Schwarzenegger stadium will first have to be in
possession of either a Gold or Silver card which can be exchanged for an
official ticket on arrival. |
| Only
200 ticketed Feyenoord fans in Sturm Graz. |
08 Aug 2000
|
|
A mere 200 Feyenoord fans have decided to make use of
the special security arrangements allowing them to travel to watch
tonight's important Champion's League game against Austrian side Sturm
Graz with a ticket already firmly in their pockets. This will be the first
time that Feyenoord fans will be able to travel to such an important
European club fixture after the away match ban of the last few years
resulting from past experiences of bad behavior on the part of the
notorious group of trouble makers following the club. It is highly likely,
however, that remaining fans will travel to Austria in the hope of
obtaining some of the as yet 300 unsold tickets still available at the
Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium (capacity 15,000). Feyenoord's new trainer
Bert van Marwijk, aware of the match's importance, has said that although
Feyenoord are favourites to win he remains cautious saying, "Feyenoord
are still in preparation for the coming season in Holland whereas the
Austrian competition has already started". Sturm Graz have also had
recent qualifying matches for the Champion's League as preparation for
this evening's game.
