| Feyenoord
and Excelsior exchange keepers |
04 July 2001
|
| Feyenoord
and their sister club Excelsior have engaged in a bit of keeper swapping -
Cor Varkevisser moves from the Kuip to Woudenstein stadium and Ronald
Graafland moves in the opposite direction. 19 year-old Varkevisser was
no.3 choice after Jurek Dudek and Zbigniew Malkowski (and ready for the
next step up the goalkeeping ladder) while Graafland was supposed to take
over as no.1 goalie for Excelsior but, plagued by injury last season, was
unable to replace 1st choice Carlo l'Ami and is now in need of regaining
match rhythm. |

| Cambuur
went down again at home, this time 1 - 4 to another
Rotterdam side, Excelsior. Santinho
Lopes de Monteirod the score for the visitors after 13 minutes.
Brian Pinas added a 2nd in the 38th and Michael van der Kruis the 3rd on
halftime to give the visitors a very nice advantage. Cambuur tried their
best but Excelsior were better on the ball and, after Rudy Mann got a
consolation goal for the home team in the 60th, Steve Olfers made the
final score 1 - 4 in the 75th.

drew with Go Ahead Eagles 3 - 3 - Ugur Yildirimd the score for the visitors in the
22nd minute, Thomas Buffel equalized in the 24th, Cecilio Lopes putting
the Rotterdammers ahead two minutes later. Yildirim got his 2nd in the 58th, Dick Schreuder got a 3rd for the Eagles in the
61st and Jard Simr equalized in the 83rd. |

|
| Sparta
beat Excelsior - goals from Michel Langerak (32nd minute) and that
man Ali Elkhattabi (51st) looked to have sealed victory before Somalia
put one away in the 65th to give their Rotterdam neighbours hope of
recovery but Nourdin Boukhari got a late 88th minute 3rd goal for the home
team to make the final score 3 - 1.

| Go
Ahead Eagles beat Excelsior 1 - 0 |
03 June 2001
|
| The
Rotterdammers were the stronger side in the 1st half but didn't convert
the chances they got, Cecilio Lopes coming closest, and it was instead a
goal from Dick Kooijman in the 26th minute which put the Deventer side
ahead. Johan Feskens could have equalized but missed a penalty in the 43rd
and the Eagles held on to earn 3 points and are on equal points with
Excelsior who are just ahead on goal average. |
| Excelsior
sign Leo Koswal |
31 May 2001
|
| Excelsior
have signed Emmen's Leo Koswal (whose contract has expired) for two years.
The 25 year-old hopes to make it back to Ere Divisie football if his new
club succeed in being promoted via the playoffs currently under way. The
Rotterdammers have won their first playoff match on Tuesday against
Cambuur Leuuwaarden 3 - 2. |
| RBC
sign Geert den Ouden |
05 May 2001
|
| RBC
are not planning to stay in the Toto Division for more than one season
and, in their bid to strengthen their lineup, are hoping to add
Excelsior's Geert den Ouden to their squad. The 24 year-old striker's
agent will be holding talks with the club next week. |
| Excelsior
draw with VVV 3 - 3 |
02 Apr 2001
|
| VVV
held their own in a 1st half which saw Simr put the home side ahead and
Evans equalize. After the break they went further and looked to be heading
for victory when Snip and Martens scored in the 57th and 60th, but Lopes
scored a 2nd and Michel
Kruijer saved a point for the Rotterdammers with a 3rd last minute goal. |
| Excelsior's
Langenberg off to Eagles |
13 Mar 2001
|
| Excelsior's
Ruud Langenberg is making the move to Go Ahead Eagles. The 21 year-old
left-footed defender ended up at Excelsior after an apprenticeship at
Feyenoord and will join older brother Rob at his new club next season. |
| Excelsior
go down 3 - 0 at TOP Oss |
24 Feb 2001
|
| Excelsior
took their 2nd beating of the last 7 days with a 3 - 0 defeat at the hands
of TOP Oss. Last weekend they went down 4 - 0 to Den Bosch who haved
up a gap of 3 points with a game in hand at the top of the Toto table. The
Rotterdammers started well enough but a missed penalty by Jarda Simr in
the 14th minute and a red card for Patrick Mtiliga in the 39th put an end
to their hopes in this match. Stefan Jansen was man of the match for TOP
Oss with 2 second half goals in the 62nd and 74th. Edwin de Wijs scored
the 3rd in the 81st. |
| Den
Bosch tops after 4 - 0 against Excelsior |
18 Feb 2001
|
| Den
Bosch made it absolutely clear who the Toto no.1 team is today with their
4 - 0 win over rivals Excelsior. Both teams chose for an attacking and
attractive style, making the match between the Toto's finest well worth a
watch. 18 year-old talent Van de Laak got the 1st in the 18th and,
although Excelsior tried to get into the match, Peter Uneken doubled the
score for the home team in the 39th. In a rather lukewarm 2nd half Michels
added a 3rd and Bart van der Eede headed in his 14th of the season just
before the final whistle to push the point home. |
| Excelsior
draw with ADO Den Haag |
10 Feb 2001
|
| Despite
being given an early lead by Somalia after only 3 minutes, which made it
look as though they were on their way to a simple victory, ADO Den Haag
gave Excelsior a nasty shock with 2 goals after an hour's play from Jasper
van Dijk and Ali Boussaboun. It was Somalia who saved at least the one
point for the Rotterdammers in the closing stages leaving ADO regretting a
lost opportunity to go home with 3 important points. |
| Excelsior
firmly on top after 2 - 0 at MVV |
04 Feb 2001
|
| The
Toto leaders strengthen their position at the top with this away win at MVV.
They're not yet
showing signs of suffering from David Connolly's departure to Feyenoord -
Thomas Buffel scored ther in the 61st minute and 6 minutes before
time 20 year-old ex-Feyenoorder Patrick Mtiliga scored the 2nd. Excelsior
are now 8 points clear of Den Bosch who have two games in hand. |
| Excelsior
beat Telstar 4 - 2 |
31 Jan 2001
|
| The
match got off to a late start due to an electrical problem - wot no
lights? After an hour's wait the action started well with a goal from
Alpha Turay for the Rotterdammers after only 5 minutes play, Telstar's
Sander Oostrom equalizing almost immediately after the kickoff. It took
until the end of the 1st half before the next balls hit the back of the
net - two within a minute, Somalia (on loan from big brother Feyenoord)
made it 2-1 and Jarda Simr (another ex-Feyenoorder) made it 3-1. If it
wasn't already obvious to everyone that the cooperation between the two
Rotterdam sides was benefitting Excelsior then Thomas Buffel's goal in the
62nd minute made it absolutely clear. The Belgian midfielder is being
allowed to develop his skills in the calmer waters of the Toto (can I
still call it that) Division. Sergio Ommel came back with a 2nd goal for
the visitors but the home team held onto their well deserved lead till the
whistle. They remain top of the table. |
| AZ
in quarter finals Cup 3-1 against Excelsior |
27 Jan 2001
|
| The
young man who's about to depart for Twente, Sjaak Polak, will leave
Rotterdam with a bad taste in his mouth after missing a penalty in the
89th minute. Excelsior were 2-1 down and they could have gone in to extra
time fighting for a surprise upset if Sjaak had got it right, and he would
have been the hero of the day. He'd scored the home side's only goal in
the 76th minute after John Bosman's and Barry van Galen's 2nd half goals
had put Twente a well deserved 2-0 up. Instead Sjaak missed and Van Galen
made it 3-1 in the closing seconds to complete Excelsior's
disappointment. |
| Scramble
for Sjaak Polak begins |
23 Jan 2001
|
| The
fight is on between Groningen, RKC and AZ for 24 year-old Excelsior talent
Sjaak Polak. Groningen have been following the youngster for some time and
were ready to sign him but thought the price tag too high. Excelsior have
said he can now leave transfer free at the end of this season - so it's
make your mind up time. |
| Somalia
on loan to Excelsior |
08 Jan 2001
|
| Feyenoord's
Brazilian striker Somalia is to be lent to satellite club Excelsior. He's
seen little 1st team action this season in the Kuip and since the arrival
of Irishman David Connolly and Swede Johan Elmander the outlook has got
worse. There was a possibility that he would go to Fortuna but the
language barrier (he speaks only Portugese) put an end to that. |
| Excelsior Toto leaders after 3 - 1 over Veendam |
17 Dec 2000
|
| The
other club from Rotterdam (after Feyenoord and Sparta) remain top of the
Toto division as the halfway mark is reached (and football has a short
break here in Holland). Even without David Connolly, recently moved to
Feyenoord, they proved too strong for lowly Veendam. After 1st half goals,
from Geert van Ouden for the home team and Erwin Buurmeijer for the
visitors, the match was decided in the 2nd 45 minutes by goals from (wait
for it) Santinho Lopes de Manteiro. Excelsior are now 5 points ahead of Den
Bosch, who couldn't play their match. |
| Connolly
returns to Feyenoord |
09 Dec 2000
|
| The
23 year-old Irish international striker David Connolly is set to return to
his old club Feyenoord. In 1997 he played for the Rotterdam club, but saw
little action, went to Wolverhampton Wanderers in England for a year, came
back to Feyenoord (where Leo Beenhakker couldn't use him), moved on to
satellite Excelsior (for whom he scored 42 goals) and is currently the
Toto Division's top scorer. |
| Excelsior
top after 5 - 4 win over Dordrecht '90 |
06 Nov 2000
|
| The
scoreline is misleading - Excelsior were far stronger in midfield than
their opponents. Jarda Simr and Thomas Buffel performed an excellent job
in midfield - so it was a surprise that Dordrecht went 2 goals up in the
1st quarter of an hour thanks to Marco Boogers and Glen Summerville. Sjaak
Polak scored a penalty for the home team and Thomas Buffel made it 2-2
before halftime. The visitors looked chaotic in midfield and Excelsior
looked to have everything under control, Connolly scored a hat trick for
them to take them to 5-2 by the 78th minute. They lost concentration after
that, allowing Dordrecht to score another 2 goals, courtesy of Mark de
Vries and Jermaine Sandvliet. Excelsior are back on top with 25 points
from 11 games and Dordrecht '90 are 14th with 12 points. |
| Excelsior
go top after win over Cambuur |
24 Oct 2000
|
| The
new Second Division (Toto Division) leaders are Excelsior from Rotterdam
after their 3-2 victory over Cambuur Leeuwarden. Mischa Rook put Cambuur
ahead in the 10th minute. The Belgian player Thomas Buffel (on loan from
Feyenoord) scored in the 33rd and 34th minute to put Excelsior in front.
Patrick Mtiliga added a third in the 40th. Sandor van der Heide narrowed
the margin by scoring in the last minute of the match. Buffel dominated
the midfield for Excelsior and Mtiliga also impressed. |
